Catherine Faulks Lead Member for Skills and Enterprise As the new Lead Member for Skills and Enterprise at Kensington and Chelsea I am delighted to be attending the first borough-wide Business Awards, celebrating the achievements of our local businesses and entrepreneurs. We are proud to support this inaugural event, and my thanks to the Kensington and Chelsea Chamber of Commerce for all the work they have done to make tonight happen. The Skills and Enterprise portfolio is new and demonstrates that we recognise the value local businesses and entrepreneurs bring to our borough. In my new role I am excited to reach out and work closely with businesses, thinking about how the Council can continue to support our vibrant local economy. I want to build on conversations with business, growing our understanding of the barriers you face and how we can help. But another important part of my portfolio is working with young people to develop their skills and support them in starting work. In order to achieve this, we need to talk to businesses about

THE K&C FOUNDATION’S GRENFELL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FUND Hope, support and opportunities. The Kensington & Chelsea Foundation has a 10-year record of success in bringing the community together to address local hardship and exclusion. On the day of the Grenfell Tower Fire, they responded immediately to the tragedy by setting up a fundraising appeal to help those affected and the wider community. Of the £7 million raised, £5.4 million has been committed with over £5 million distributed to the survivors and the next of kin of the 72 people who lost their lives. The remaining £1.6 million and any further funds donated will be invested over the next three years through the Grenfell Community

Development Fund. The priorities for the Fund have been informed by a Listening Project which encouraged survivors and people living and working across North Kensington to say what they thought were the most pressing needs postGrenfell and what might help to address them. Well, yes and no... Whether you’re a first time entrant or a seasoned awards veteran, it’s important to try and look beyond this evening’s glitz and glamour. After all, award season is about more than just celebrating entrepreneurial excellence or showing off your success to stakeholders. With some forward planning and creative

thinking, tonight’s event offers a number of opportunities for socially savvy businesses to generate ‘buzz’ and really stand out from their competitors.

Join the conversation As with any big event, award ceremonies are usually preceded and followed by a certain amount of online ‘chatter’ – particularly on social media. Whilst platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram can sometimes seem intimidating, you don’t have to be a social media expert to capitalise on your achievement and join the conversation. For example, you might think about using hashtags associated with the awards, or tagging the event organisers in your posts – both on the night and in the days afterwards. Remember, organisers will want to maximise PR for the event and will likely share these posts on their own social media channels – helping your business reach a bigger audience. Assuming you

have permission, you could also use the awards logo on your social headers and banners. On the night, remember to take photos of your team celebrating their success and then post them to platforms like Instagram, or nominate someone to live Tweet updates throughout the evening. And don’t neglect video content – it generates more social shares than text and images combined. So which social platform is best for promoting your achievement? Although it can be tempting to adopt a ‘scattergun’ approach, it’s important to take into account the type of content you’re

posting, where your audience spends their time and – most importantly – where you’re most comfortable. In other words, don’t feel you need to post across multiple platforms to share your news. If you’ve had the most past success

Tried and tested Social media might be the new kid on the block when it comes to sharing news, but that doesn’t mean you should overlook more traditional marketing strategies. Being named a finalist or a winner could well be the motivation for someone to choose your business over a competitor. With this in mind, you might think about including a news story about the awards on your website, or adding the logo and a brief strapline about your nomination or win to your header or footer. Even if you don’t end up going home with an award, being nominated is still a huge achievement, and you should take the opportunity to tell your customers about it. Similarly, you should include news, logos and judges quotes in your company marketing materials – in particular, corporate brochures and e-newsletters.
