This means we generally have something on offer for everyone, whatever their tipple may be. Our truly artisan product method sets us apart from the rest: our Dr J’s Gin is one of the very rare UK small-batch gins to be made with the distillery’s own base alcohol, and our Old Salt Rum was the first rum ever distilled in the UK”.

OF
Italian LIFE
AT 2 BEECHES AVENUE GASTROVINARIA
Vinoteca Italiana has been a staple in Carshalton Beeches for more than six years, offering authentic Italian cooking in a home from home setting. Now husband and wife team Gianni and Hana Quartulli are taking their recipe for success and applying it to their latest business venture – 2 Beeches Avenue, an Italian Gastrovinaria. They have taken over the adjoining premises to the restaurant and opened the Gastrovinaria, which is also the perfect spot for coffee and a pastry – when we say coffee, we mean only the best Italian coffee, rich and intense, made with Napoli’s finest coffee beans – and to while away time enjoying the company of family and friends. Brunch is served from 10am and includes classics such as Egg Benedict and Egg Florentine, there is also a lunchtime menu featuring fresh, colourful salads,
sandwiches, delectable Arancini – homemade stuffed rice balls filled with beef ragu – as well as heartier dishes. Early evening visitors can feast on a platter of antipasto, a selection of Italian cured meats and cheeses, olives and rustic bread, which goes perfectly with a glass of wine. Gianni and Hana embrace the philosophy that Italians live to eat, not eat to live, so the Gastrovinaria is a place of discovery with new and tasty treats to savour on the premises or to take away to enjoy at home. They have regular themed nights such as Steakhouse night, Lobster & Seafood or Tapas & Wine which are well worth a visit. Passionate about all things Italian cuisine, Gianni and Hana have sourced produce from across Italy. Their range of wines from around the world includes many small, regional producers not normally found on supermarket shelves. 2 Beeches Avenue is hosting a Winemakers Dinner with paired wines. See their website for more information.
The deli hosts regular events. Look out for details on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/2beechesavenue 2 Beeches Avenue, Carshalton Beeches | 020 7665 8321 | Open: Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 6pm

DARK CHOCOLATE WHISKEY CAKE
Chocolate Indulgence Dark chocolate whiskey cake for Valentine’s Day
Laura Scott is a private chef, supper club host and cookery tutor based in Epsom. If you are planning a romantic night in on Valentine’s Day, or simply love chocolate and whiskey, she has provided the perfect recipe for you. INGREDIENTS
METHOD
150 g dark chocolate
Pre heat the oven to 170 degrees.
225 g unsalted butter softened
Grease and line a 20cm cake tin with baking parchment.
225 g light brown sugar 4 medium eggs separated 200 g ground almonds 1 tsp baking powder 100 ml whiskey Cocoa powder for decoration
Melt the chocolate (broken into small pieces) over a pan of simmering water, allow to cool slightly. Cream the butter and sugar together in a food mixer until pale in colour.
Whiskey truffles for decoration
Add in the egg yolks, one at a time and continue whisking the cake batter.
RECIPE NOTES
Next, fold in the whiskey followed by the melted chocolate.
This cake is best served with lightly whipped cream and fresh raspberries. It keeps well in an airtight container and is even better after a day or two when the whiskey flavour develops and keeps the cake fudgy in texture.
Laura Scott will also be hosting a Vegan Valentine supper club 13th February, 7.30-11pm 2 Glyn House, 43 Burgh Heath Rd, Epsom
Add in the ground almonds and baking powder, stirring well to combine. Whisk up the egg whites (to soft peaks) then fold them into the cake mixture in two batches. Put the cake mix into the lined baking tin and bake for between 65-70 minutes. Once the cake is completely cool, dust with cocoa powder and garnish with whiskey truffles.

THE WOOLPACK
THE WOOLPACK REOPENS AFTER AN
Exciting Renovation
The Woolpack, in the heart of historic Banstead, is a community local that can trace its roots back to the 18th century.
The Woolpack remains a traditional village pub where you are guaranteed a warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere. Having recently undergone an extensive refurbishment, the beautiful entrance porch welcomes you in to friendly staff and a wonderfully inviting atmosphere. The original Woolpack Inn was trading in the High Street in the 17th century and down the years has played a vital part in the day to day life of the village of Banstead. For much of the 19th century much of the local parish business was held at the pub. John Ingrimes, who was landlord at the pub for a lengthy period was also Receiver of the Mail, an important position at a time when mail was delivered by a network of coaches. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s the pub acted a watering station for local buses that has struggled up the hill from nearby Sutton. Early radiators were notoriously prone to overheating.
The original Woolpack Inn was badly damaged on August 8, 1944 when a German V1 flying rocket landed nearby, killing one person and injuring many others. It was decided that the old pub had been damaged beyond repair and this gave Surrey County Council the opportunity to redevelop the area, and in crucially to widen the High Street. The current Woolpack was given planning approval in 1955 and promptly rebuilt. It remains at the heart of village life. The pub hosts a popular quiz every Monday from 8pm (advance booking is highly recommended) while there is a live jazz afternoon on the second Tuesday of every month, from 2.30-4.30pm. The Woolpack is renowned for its varied menu of freshly cooked food and also for serving superb real ales and lagers from Shepherd Neame, Britain’s oldest brewer. There is also an extensive wine list and all these elements ensure that people want to come back time and time again.

THE UK WIFE CARRYING RACE UK Wife Carrying Race Rules Only the carrier has to enter the race. Males or females carry a ‘wife’ (who must be alive, human, at least 18 years old, can be male or female, and does not need to be the carrier’s wife). All those carried must wear a helmet. There is a weigh-in prior to the start: All ‘wives’ must weigh at least 50kg. Anyone under-weight will be obliged to wear a rucksack filled with tins of baked beans, flour, water or similar to bring them to the required weight. All entrants will start off at the same time, and the first over the line is the winner.
THE UK
Wife Carrying RACE
The winner of the UK Wife Carrying Race will win a barrel of local Ale (worth £150).
Held in Dorking since 2008
The first-placed British finishers will win £250 towards their expenses in representing Britain and competing in the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland in July.
Saturday 29 February 2020, 10.30am The Nower, Dorking
Last placed finishers receive the ceremonial Pot Noodle and dog food.
This year’s event will be held on 29 February, traditionally a day when ladies propose marriage to their partners. The winning carrier at the 2019 race proposed to his girlfirend at the prize-giving and this was filmed and beamed around the world. The Wife Carrying Races at Dorking are a relatively recent addition to the calendar. Wife carrying originated in the UK over twelve centuries ago, on 8 June 793AD, when Viking raiders rampaged into Lindisfarne on the northeast coast of what is now England, destroying the monastary and most likely carrying off any unwilling local wenches. Such wife carrying (-off ) continued intermittently for around 300 years. Wife Carrying was re-introduced into the UK by the UK Wife Carrying Race in 2008, after an absence from these shores of nearly 900 years. For more details: www.trionium.com/wife

Obstacles and water hazards will be included. Spectators are encouraged to attend with their own water-pistols and buckets of water to staff the ‘Splash Zone’ (return leg only - something for the competitors to look forward to!).
The carrier who completes the course with the heaviest wife will win a pound of sausages (for strength). The oldest carrier will receive the tin of pilchards and jar of Bovril ‘you know, from before the war.’ You can use any one of the many recognised holds: bridal carry, piggy-back, shoulder-ride, fireman’s carry (across the shoulders), the well-recognised and very fast Estonian Hold (wife hangs upsidedown on man’s back, legs crossed in front of the man’s face) or the not-so-fast but unique Dorking Hold (the reverse Estonian). Past British winners of the UK Wife Carrying Race who have gone on to compete at the World Championships in Finland have finished in sixth, fifth, third and second place: We await our firstever British Wife Carrying World Champions!
