Mayfield Lavender FARM APPEARS IN NEW PETER PAN MOVIE
Mayfield Lavender Farm in Banstead features prominently in new fantasy film ‘The Lost Girls’ – a modern retelling of J.M Barrie’s Peter Pan, from the perspective of Wendy Darling. Since its premiere this summer, the film has hit cinemas in the US and UK as well as streaming services like Amazon and Google Play.
Starring household names such as Vanessa Redgrave and Game of Thrones’ actor Ian Glen, the story follows Wendy into old age as four generations of Darling women deal with the consequences of having met Peter Pan and journeyed to Neverland.
The lavender field, as Neverland, provides a magical escape from the real world - a place the
Darling women visit with Pan over their respective teenage years.
This isn’t the first time Mayfield has appeared on the big screen. Previous movies shot at the location include Malayalam film ‘London Bridge’, Bollywood film ‘Azhar’ and The Crimson Petal and the White drama series featuring Richard E. Grant.
Mayfield Lavender Farm is now closed for the 2022 season but will reopen in June 2023. Its gift shop and garden nursery in Epsom, Surrey, remains open all year and can be found at 139 Reigate Road, Epsom, KT17 3DW.
A popular Surrey beauty spot has landed a role as Neverland in the newest Peter Pan film.

Epsom GOLF CLUB
The 18 hole course is unique, offering a wide variety of holes which provide a challenge for golfers of all levels, renowned for its undulating year-round greens that test even the smoothest of putters. An advantage of Epsom is that the course lies on the top of the North Downs and this brings two benefits: firstly, because the subsoil is chalk, the course is seldom affected by rain, making it a great winter destination and secondly, visitors enjoy stunning panoramic views of London’s iconic skyline.
Why not book a round and come and sample the welcoming atmosphere of the Club and the challenges that our year-round golf course has to offer. Or, if you would like to organise a tour of the Club and a chat with our Director of Golf, Stuart Walker, who will be able to advise you on all our membership options, please call 01372 741867 (ext 1) or email stuartwalker@epsomgolfclub.co.uk

RABBLE Art
A Surrey social enterprise, selling framed prints by disabled artists, has a real spring in its step this February. With new products in the pipeline, not to mention a new local artist on-board, 2023 is shaping up to be an exciting year.
Art Rabble sells framed art prints by disabled artists in Surrey. Its aim is to create a positive social impact by recognising the skills of disabled artists. The company sells work by artists with Down’s Syndrome, autism, Parkinson’s disease and learning disabilities. Founder, Lisa Lim, explains why artwork from Art Rabble is so special, “With each painting, you get to know the artist; who they are, where they’re from and, most importantly, where they’re going. Understanding what they have experienced, hearing about their life (as you may not have before), it’s really inspirational.”
Art Rabble’s newest artist is Ella Walker from Dorking. Ella has anxiety and depression, conditions which impact all aspects of her life.
“I struggle with my mental health; I have anxiety, which makes going out and interacting with people challenging, and depression, which makes functioning day-to-day difficult.”
However, encouraged by Art Rabble, Ella has realised that people beyond her immediate family can, and do, enjoy her paintings. That she has an enormous amount to offer and her skills as an artist are something she should be enormously proud of. This has helped to build Ella’s confidence, to give shape and focus to her days.

REIMAGINE AGEING WITH BIRCHGROVE
Old age is a condition not everyone gets to experience. Some might call that a privilege. But often, the thought of getting older fills individuals with anxiety, a sense of resignation, or even dread. Many people think ageing means a decline into disability, dementia, and dependency on others, but it doesn’t have to be that way according to renowned anti-ageing champion Sir Muir Gray.
Sir Muir Gray is one of Britain’s most senior medical figures renowned for his work in the NHS translating scientific evidence-based medical research into policy. Author of many books about ageing and health, his philosophy on ageing well is inspiring.
The Birchgrove team have embraced his cultural revolution to reimagine ageing and help as many people as possible to prolong, not only their lifespan, but their health span, so that they can lead a fuller, healthier later life.
What sets Birchgrove apart are its strong core values all focused on making sure residents of its retirement communities are healthy and fit and their later years as full and whole as possible.
Birchgrove designs its retirement communities to meet the needs of people in later life. You have the freedom to live as you please in a quality selfcontained apartment that is future designed to anticipate changing needs and central to that is its ethos of supporting you to remain active and lead life independently.
Birchgrove offers modern and spacious apartments in Kent and Surrey. Each apartment is individually designed to maximise space and light and has the Birchgrove trademark of high-quality finishes so that
the apartments are distinctly elegant - with details such as wide doors and corridors for freedom of movement and wheelchair access, appliances at waist height for ease of use in the fully fitted kitchens and en-suite showers.
Once you reside at a Birchgrove retirement community you have access to exclusive onsite amenities such as a restaurant, bar, club room, wellness suite, library, communal terrace, landscaped gardens and greenhouse. For added peace of mind there is a concierge and 24-hour staff presence. There is a weekly programme of events and activities to offer opportunities to socialise and relax with neighbours or try out new hobbies and pursuits, contributing to the friendly community lifestyle that is an integral part of the Birchgrove life.
Birchgrove also offer complete packages to take the hassle out of moving. They will assist you with all aspects of the move, from putting your current home on the market to decluttering and selling unwanted items. The ‘Moveasy’ service, for example, even goes as far as helping you pick furniture for your new home! You can move into your new home stress free and with very little hassle.
Birchgrove operates retirement communities at Queensgate Apartments, Sidcup, Kent; Woodbank Apartments in Hook Heath, Woking and Lower Mill Apartments in Ewell Village, Surrey.

THE CLINKRestaurant
The Clink Restaurant, HMP High Down, was The Clink Charity’s original establishment opening in 2009. Created with the mission of reducing reoffending for prisoners through training them in a real-life working environment; here the students are trained by professionals to graduate with City & Guilds NVQs. This enables them to attain employment in the hospitality industry upon release, providing them with purpose and reducing the likelihood of committing crime again.
After an unfortunately prolonged period of closure due to the Coronavirus – The High Down restaurant re-opened its doors in June of 2022. Covid was a dark time for the restaurant
as the students were unable to train and graduate without the support of their customers. As well as this, The Clink Gardens who grow fresh produce for the restaurant, also located in HMP High Down, were forced to stop their programme. Since then, their incredible, unique menus have drawn great success for the restaurant, holding the commendable title of Sutton’s No.1 restaurant on Trip Advisor for over 3 months running.
Delicious Menus
Draped with 5- star reviews, the talented students treated diners to a range of delightful Summer, Autumn, and Christmas Menus this year. Due to an overwhelming response in bookings from customers – The Clink, High Down were, for the
first time, able to extend their openings to additional Sunday lunches this December to further share their well-crafted Christmas menus.
Unique Dining Experience
Unlike any other restaurant chain – The Clink Restaurant offers a unique experience for diners. With it being located within the prison walls, the security system is strict. All electronics are prohibited within the restaurant – so no Instagramming your meal! This allows you to absorb the experience to its fullest potential and connect further to the people around you –something that often is lacking at the dinner table these days.

ST RAPHAEL’S HOSPICE OPENS NEW BOUTIQUE CHARITY SHOP IN WIMBLEDON PARK
On Thursday, 1 December, British comedian and local resident, Andy Hamilton, cut the ribbon at the store opening to welcome the community to 5 Leopold Road.
St Raphael’s newest charity shop becomes the Hospice’s 11th store across South West London and their third boutique-style store. Wimbledon Village is home to the charity’s first-ever boutique which opened its doors in 2020. The Hospice is thrilled to further expand their presence in the local community. The charity’s retail team hope for the store to become a destination for the ever-growing number of shoppers who are choosing to
shop sustainably. These brick and mortar stores play a vital role for the Hospice. They supplement the limited funds received by the NHS, in order to continue providing free specialist palliative care to the community. Last year, St Raphael’s supported around 1,000 patients within the Hospice and from the comfort of their own homes. 1 in 4 people from the local community will be looked after the by the Hospice making the new store an important arrival to the area.
Sara Jane Woods, Commercial Director at St Raphael’s Hospice, said: “We are delighted to start welcoming customers and donors to our vibrant new store in Wimbledon Park. We are excited for shoppers to find a fantastic range of high-quality preloved treasures for their homes and wardrobes. Every penny spent in-store supports the vital work of the Hospice and goes directly toward the specialist care of people living with life-limiting illness in our community. Each bag of donations transforms into hours of specialist care. Our customers and donors play an important role in ensuring that St Raphael’s continues to be here for people of both Merton and Sutton when they really need us, as well as the support of their loved ones. There is no better time to stock up on sustainable Christmas presents while supporting your local Hospice.”
St Raphael’s shops need volunteers. If you have as little as four hours a week the Hospice would love to hear from you.

HOSPICE JOINT CEO RETIRES AFTER 24 YEARS AT MUCH-LOVED CHARITY
St Raphael’s Hospice announces retirement of Joint CEO, Gail Linehan. Gail has worked at the Hospice in various roles over the last two and a half decades, having first joined as a Staff Nurse working on the Hospice Inpatient Unit. In April 2020, Gail was appointed as Joint CEO of St Raphael’s alongside Nick Stevens. Together, they led St Raphael’s to become an independent charity and work toward ensuring the sustainability of the Hospice. Nick will continue to serve as sole CEO.
In a heartfelt statement, Gail shared: “It hardly seems possible that nearly 25 years have passed since I joined St Raphael’s as a
nurse. The fundamental role and values of the Hospice in providing specialist care and support to our community have remained constant throughout. The end of our lives is just as precious as the beginning – this organisation has led by example in valuing every precious moment for our patients and their families. I am very proud of all that has been achieved at St Raphael’s, made possible with the expert guidance of the Board of Trustees, the commitment and dedication of our staff, volunteers and the generosity of those who donate to support our services.”
As a charity, St Raphael’s needs to raise a staggering £4.5 million
toward their running costs each year, to continue supporting the 1 in 4 people of Merton and Sutton who need them.
Gail closes by adding: “Whilst acknowledging the current challenges that our community faces, I appeal to all to support and donate to ensure that St Raphael’s Hospice will continue to be there for those who need our care into the future.”

CHINTHURST SCHOOL
Chinthurst has been named 2022 Independent School of the Year for Sporting Achievement!
More than 700 schools were nominated for prestigious 2022 Independent School Parent awards this year. In a competitive field, the judging panel said that Chinthurst stood out because of its pioneering approach to gender in sport. The school allows pupils to choose which sport they want to play without being constrained by conventional norms. In football, rugby, netball and hockey, boys and girls train alongside each other and play fixtures together in competitive teams. As a result, they see themselves as equals on the pitch with no preconceived ‘limitations’ and the encouragement and support they
give one another on the games fields continues off it.
The children enjoy high standards of coaching and playing whatever sport they choose, whatever gender they are, and whatever standard they have reached or natural ability they may have. Everyone has the chance to develop the essential skills of teamwork and resilience, with a focus firmly on fun!
Head teacher Cathy Trundle said, ‘We believe our approach to sport will have a significant impact, not only on how the children think now, but on how they continue to think as they grow up and become adults. We hope it will play a
part in changing the attitudes, assumptions, constraints, and limitations that society places on girls and boys and, by doing so, it will actively promote gender equality. Giving pupils a voice in sport and across other areas of the school is an integral part of our Wellbeing at Heart programme as it builds confidence and self-esteem’.
