EDITOR'S LETTER
Welcome elcome to the W summer edition of Out&About magazine.
afternoon of food and music run by local residents to raise money for local good causes. Thousands of people from the surrounding area attend, and you need to get there early to secure a good spot.
The sun is finally out, after a rather wet June, and we’re now looking forward to a few months of outdoor events and family fun. There is so much happening in our local area that we haven’t been able to feature it all in this edition, but nonetheless we have tried to feature as many as we can. The summer months mean driving past Oaks Park provides a feast of purple for eyes as the lavender fields are in full bloom. You can read all about the fields in this edition, but if you haven’t visited them yet I thoroughly recommend a visit. The sight and aroma of lavender as far is the eye can see is quite breath-taking. I’m particularly looking forward to Music in Nork Park later this month. The family fun day is a free-to-attend
EDITOR’S TIPS Fizz Fest Banstead
I was delighted to attend the Sutton Business Awards in early June, and warmly congratulate the finalists and winners on their achievements. The awards, organised by Sutton Chamber of Commerce, provide a great opportunity for local businesses to showcase their products, services and commercial achievements. You can read more about the awards, and some of the winners, in this edition of the magazine. I hope you enjoy reading this edition; please support our advertisers – without whom this magazine would not be possible. Have a lovely summer.
Happy reading!

relevant fragrance for today so he suggested buying a lavender farm. His idea was shot down three years in a row but finally Brendan got the go-ahead, although was stopped from buying a farm.
But while the site in Banstead was traditionally used to grow lavender in the 18th and 19th century until just over a decade ago it had not been used for that purpose.
Instead he commissioned environmental charity Bioregional Development Group to help get the lavender planted in 2002. The land was leased from Sutton Council, with Brendan standing as guarantor, and Yardley sponsored the planting.
Then Brendan Maye, a former managing director of the fine fragrance division of Wella UK, came up with the idea to grow lavender as part of a plan to revive the fortunes of the Yardley brand.
In 2005, Yardley was sold and the new owners decided not to continue with the sponsorship. As the project stood on the brink of collapse Brendan bought the 25-acre organic farm.
With sales declining, he believed consumers needed to witness the beauty of lavender to accept it as a
With his wife Lorna stepping in run the farm, Brendan later quit his job and is now involved day-to-day,
working at the farm and 12-acre nursery in Epsom, which he bought in 2010 after cashing in his pension. “Every year we learn something new,” he said with a laugh. “It’s been a very steep learning curve but it’s been great. “The work is more physical but there’s also more control. It makes it less stressful from that perspective alone. From June 1 until midSeptember, when the farm is open it’s a 24-hour-a-day job for three months. Brendan said: “We’re not surprised at the way people have taken to it as we have worked very hard to encapsulate that experience. What is gratifying is that people like it for the right reasons. It gives us some confidence that we can continue to pursue some ideas.”

Councillor John Beckett was officially recognised as the new Mayor of Epsom and Ewell for 2019-2020 at the Council’s annual Mayor making ceremony held at the Town Hall on Tuesday 21 May. Speaking at the annual Council meeting, the Mayor said, “Being elected as the first citizen for Epsom and Ewell is a great honour. I am looking forward to fulfilling my mayoral duties and meeting the numerous charities and organisations within the borough. “My theme for the year is, ‘understanding’. We live in difficult times and we need to understand that everybody is different but we all have more in common then we think.” For his mayoral year, the Mayor has selected the following organisations as his chosen charities: •M otor Neuron Disease Association (MNDA) - The East Surrey Branch of the MNDA provides care and support to around 60 people living with MND throughout the East Surrey area, as well as helping to fund vital research into the disease itself. •P hysical Handicapped and Abled Bodied (PHAB) - Epsom and Ewell Phab is a youth club for young disabled and non-disabled people run entirely by volunteers. Their aim is ‘Making More of Life Together’. •A lzheimer’s Society - Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity that provide information and support, improve care, fund research, and create lasting change for people affected by dementia.
L@outandabout_mag
The Mayor added, “We have already started to organise a number of fund raising events for my chosen charities and I do hope as many of you as possible will be able to attend to support and help raise much needed funds for these good causes. For more information please see www. mayorscharitiesepsom.org.uk”. Councillor John Beckett has been serving the local community for the last sixteen years. He was first elected as a Borough Councillor in 2003 and served on many different Council committees including four years as Chairman of the Borough Council’s Environment Committee. He was born in Kingston upon Thames and grew up in Old Malden. John moved to Epsom in 1993 when he met Alison. They married in 1995 and subsequently moved to their home in Ewell. They have a daughter, Emily who is currently attending the University Of Surrey. John began his working career in retail and specialised in the home computer market. He switched careers and joined British Telecom as a field engineer, where he progressed through several different divisions in a variety of roles. During his 22 years with the company, he decided to further his own education and undertook his professional qualifications in electrical engineering and business development. He also managed the company’s Modern Apprentices and Graduates schemes and the company’s computer training system. John currently runs his own property maintenance company, which he started in 2008. The Mayor is the first citizen of the borough of Epsom and Ewell and has several specific roles during their one-year term of office. These include representing the Council and local community at formal and ceremonial occasions, both within the borough and elsewhere, and chairing full meetings of Council. Councillor Humphrey Reynolds was elected as the Deputy Mayor.

D DAY AND OPERATION EPSOM
D DAY AND OPERATION EPSOM
Remembered IN WW2 FAMILY DAY
Saturday 13 July, 11am to 4.30pm, Bourne Hall Park, Spring Street, Ewell We’re marking the 75th anniversary of D Day and Operation Epsom with a special free family day at Bourne Hall Park. There will be WW2 re-enactors, displays of weapons and vehicles plus music and dancing from Surrey Jive. D Day Codenamed Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of France, happened on 6 June 1944 after five years of war with Germany. It was a seaborne invasion, the biggest one in history. By dawn, thousands of paratroopers and glider troops were already on the ground behind enemy lines, securing bridges and exit roads. The amphibious invasions began at 6.30am. Thousands of ships set out from the south coast of England, in all over 6,000 vessels joined the attack. They were supported by over 11,000 planes. Throughout the day, some 156,000, British, American and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of Normandy. Operation Epsom Operation Epsom (also known as the battle of the Odon), took place at the end of June and was the first major British offensive to be launched after the D Day landings. The offensive was intended to outflank and seize the German-occupied city of Caen, an important Allied objective in the early stages of Operation Overlord. It was a successful attempt to force the Germans to concentrate their armoured units at the eastern end of the Normandy beachhead and to prevent Rommel from moving any of his panzer divisions west towards the American front, where preparations were underway for the main breakout from the beachhead. You’re playing at The Jockey Club Live events around the country and coming to Sandown Park, what has brought you back? I had a lot of fun and after the last shows we did I couldn’t say no. Do the crowds at these racecourse shows differ from those on your normal tours?
too much! The atmosphere at both types of shows was overwhelmingly amazing. What can we expect from your live show? My show is full of energy and I hope it leaves everyone with a big smile on their face and an amazing experience. But I assure no one will be left disappointed!
Every crowd has a different energy but they don’t differ

MUSIC AT SANDOWN PARK As they are large scale outdoor summer events, do you approach them differently from the indoor shows?
Is it good to know that your music has such broad appeal when you consider the ages and demographic of your fanbase?
Our approach is the same for both indoor and outdoor events - the band and I love playing live and the crowds don’t differ too much in size so it’s great!
I love the fact that the songs resonate and touch people, whatever their age or background!
Sandown Park is a perfect example of this, but is it good to play in parts of the country that are not on the normal touring circuits that you would do? Yeah, of course. it’s always good to see people that I wouldn’t normally reach. You managed to go into the crowds at some events previously to watch the racing, did you place a cheeky bet and win? Yes I did, I sneaked out into the crowd and put a bet on and came up with a winner but it wasn’t down to my knowing the form though. Just luck! The Jockey Club Live shows are a great day out for friends and family, watch an early evening of racing and then party the rest of the night away to acts like yourself. Will you be bringing your friends and family along to the shows? Maybe but I doubt it as the shows are dotted all about the country. That’s ok though cause me and the band always have a lot of fun.
When you were at school, were you into music, what gave you the bug to want to be a singer and performer? My parents always introduced me to new music from a young age and I was just obsessed with vocals and performing since I can remember. I think I always had it in me but it wasn’t till I left school that I realised it could become a reality. Were you into sports at school as this summer certainly sees you in some interesting sporting grounds? I used to love sports, I was in most of the teams at school and loved athletics. My dad always encouraged that. You’ve mentioned before you tried horse riding when you were younger, what was it about horses that you liked? I started riding when I was quite young, maybe about 7 or 8 with one of my really good friends and I just loved it ever since. Horses were always one of my favourite animals.
Tickets are on sale via thejockeyclublive.co.uk Prices starting at £45 for adults. All T&Cs are available on sandown.thejockeyclub.co.uk. In addition to Sandown Park, The Jockey Club Live will be hosting live concerts across Market Rasen, Newmarket, Aintree, Haydock Park and Carlisle racecourses next summer.

ENGLISH SPARKLING WINE TOURS
ENGLISH Sparking WINE TOURS
Discover why English Sparkling Wine is winning so many international awards with English Sparkling Wine Tours, right here in Surrey. See how it is produced and sample a wide variety at 3 very different Vineyards. Nathan Meyers, a South African wine guide based in London, decided to trade the winelands of the Cape for the fantastic vineyards right here in Surrey! Due to climate change and the perfect ‘terroir’, the South of England can produce sparkling wine which has been deemed, by some experts, as good as, and indeed better than, the French version. Famous Champagne house Taittinger has even bought up 69 hectares in Kent as part of a multi-million pound investment over the next 10 years. Their long-term plan is to produce 300,000 bottles of English Sparkling wine. English Sparkling Wine is one of the country’s best kept secrets, but Nathan wants to share this with you on his amazing English Sparkling Wine Tours…
