SCULPTURE GARDEN
THE HANNAH PESCHAR
Sculpture Garden Art and nature in perfect harmony
Heralded as one of the first of its kind in the UK, The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden has been proudly exhibiting contemporary sculpture in a unique and magical environment for over 38 years. Now open for 2022, The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden exhibits an ever changing collection of contemporary art curated carefully through the magical grounds. Broadleaved plants, tall trees and moving water frame, support and enhance the sculptures on display.
Art and nature work in harmony neither one outshining the other. “Come into the Garden and forget all knowledge” - Hannah Peschar, 1939-2021. A work of art in its own right, the Garden - designed by landscape architect Anthony Paul - is just as important as the sculpture they have on show. Nature and art work in harmony to create a truly unique and magical environment that is constantly changing throughout the seasons and the ever changing light.
Every year they exhibit around 200 pieces by some 50+ artists. Most are British, but alongside they proudly show work by a number of European sculptors. Artists come from as close-by as the next village, to travelling across the continent to display their work. Tickets must be pre-booked online through the website. Location: Dorking, RH5 5QU

SANDOWN PARK
SummerOF MUSIC At Sandown Park
With three amazing concerts planned over the summer months, we catch up with Sandown Park and the artists to see what’s on.
PALOMA FAITH 20 JULY 2022
Double platinum and BRIT award-winning artist Paloma Faith will embark on a huge UK summer tour in 2022 that will visit Sandown Park on Wednesday 20th July. Expect incredible vocals, fantastic outfits and a spectacular production when Paloma headlines after the evening racing! What do you have planned for the Age of Utopia tour coming up?
I love playing shows outside and after the last 18 months, anything outdoors seems appealing! I’m planning on making the shows fairly different from what I usually do, as I think it’s time to shake things up a bit. My musical director and I have been sowing the seeds of an idea, something I’ve not done before, but that is all I’m at liberty to say at the moment, though! You normally play vast indoor arenas. Even though these gigs will mainly be outside, are you anticipating them to be more intimate in nature?
I think they will be, as because they aren’t in the pitch black of a venue, you can get a real feeling of
connection with the crowd, like you can see each other’s eyes and really look at everyone who is there. I feel that we need that kind of thing more than ever now, which is also why I called it the Age of Optimism Tour. We’ve all been through some very harsh stuff over the last few years, so I’m hoping that people will leave the whole experience feeling full of life and in a positive frame of mind. A lot of the shows are at racecourses across the country. What’s the appeal of playing in a location like that?
I’ve done them before and just had a really good time, so I was really keen to get more of them on this tour. The way that they are set up is really appealing, as they’re built for a certain kind of euphoria. You can see the sky and there’s so many people out there too. They’re a jolly for the whole family. I really like doing shows that are multi-generational, which isn’t always possible depending on the venue. I think I’m an artist who is, in the old truest sense of the word, a variety performer, like the sort of thing back when whole families used to do things together and go and see shows. It’s not really like that any more sadly, but I definitely feel that the best sort of art is the kind that can be enjoyed by a child alongside a cynical old wife. That’s what I’m aiming for, so the racecourses are the perfect venue for that. It’s a big family day out!

SANDOWN PARK NILE RODGERS & CHIC 27 JULY 2022
With over 200 production credits to his name, expect to hear the biggest pop hits from the last four decades when Nile Rodgers & CHIC headline after an exciting evening of racing on Wednesday 27th July 2022. You’re coming back over to the UK to do a big run of summer shows. Are you looking forward to getting back out on the road?
It’s going to be amazing. To know that I have a tour coming, when I look out at an audience at a festival, I look out at thousands of friends. I don’t look out as “I don’t know who these people are”. I look at them like I think I know every single person in the audience. I do this because I love it. I love how the music makes the people feel. When I first started practising guitar, I was practising so that I could do live concerts to play for really big audiences. That was my dream and now that the dream is a reality. Why would I not want to continue to live it as much as I can?
SIMPLY RED 4 AUGUST 2022
With five UK Number One singles and 60 million album sales, you can be sure that Simply Red will have you singing along to all their biggest hits including ‘Holding Back The Years’ and ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’ when they perform live after evening racing in summer 2022! We can’t wait to see you at Sandown Park this summer. What is it that you enjoy most about the outdoor summer racecourse shows?
The style of the show will be very different to the show we did in the indoors in the Winter. We’re gonna play a lot more up-tempo songs and it’s gonna be bright and sunny, hopefully like the weather! f @outandaboutmagazines
@outaboutmag
Do you have any pre-stage rituals? No, we don’t, no. Just make sure my guitar is in tune. Every now and then with the drummer or the bass player we sort of like fist bump each other. That’s it just because they’re the two closest guys to me, if they don’t do it, we still put our hearts into the show as much as we can. If you’re in Chic it’s your responsibility to play these compositions with a certain gusto, zeal, happiness, precision, and technical facility. What is it that you’re looking for when you decide if you’re going to work with someone? How do you choose who you do want to work with and collaborate with?
It’s a certain thing that happens when we’re in rehearsal studios and I’m auditioning people. I don’t know how to explain it to you. But I’ll give you one of the simple things. My ex-partner, Bernard Edwards, may have been one of the greatest musicians that’s ever walked this earth. The first thing I tell when I audition bass players is to play the very first song I wrote for CHIC, called “Everybody Dance”. The person who can play “Everybody Dance”, that’s the one who gets the gig.
Will you be heading to the course earlier in the day to watch the racing? Do you ever have a little flutter?
My father was very much into horse racing, and it makes me feel kind of warm inside that whenever I’m at the racecourses I’m thinking about my dad and his enthusiasm. For that reason, I’m very much looking forward to the racecourse shows. You’re currently on tour playing arenas around the UK - how does it feel to be back playing live shows again?
We came off tour in March after it was postponed from 2020, and it was very special to be back on stage. People had been through so much through this covid, and I wanted to sort of help them escape from that problem. Music is always a way of helping people forget their problems, as well as also in the sadder songs to reflect on what’s happened to them.

Gardener’s NOTES
Alex Wigley, Polesden Lacey’s Gardens and Outdoors Manager, writes July is the time to prune your early summer flowering shrubs such as Weigela, Philadelphus, Spirea and Deutzia by removing older wood back to a new shoot near the base. This will encourage the new stems to flower early the following year, also maintaining a good shape and removing any diseased material. Deadheading of roses, Dahlias and Sweet Peas after they have bloomed will encourage new flower buds rather than energy lost in setting seed. In the veg garden, pinch out side shoots on cordon tomatoes and stake them to support the weight of fruit later. Once the second truss of flowers has set, feed with tomato feed fortnightly, and once the fourth or fifth truss of fruit has set, pinch out the tops to focus energy on fruit production. Removing basal leaves up to the first fruit truss and allowing
good air flow will help reduce soil splash and blight as we move into August. Regularly pick beans to prevent them going to seed, and courgettes to prevent them forming giant marrows. Keep courgettes and squashes watered through dry periods and mulched to prolong cropping and help prevent powdery mildew. Biennial flowers such as wallflowers and foxgloves can be sown for transplanting out the following spring and semi hardwood cuttings can be taken from many hedging plant, woody herbs, and shrubs such as Choisya and Viburnum. Select a nonflowering shoot, which is firm but still bendable, and cut below a pair of leaves with a clean knife. Strip the leaves leaving only the top pair and insert into a welldraining compost kept in a cool shady spot to root.

RECIPE
LEMON SYLLABUB AND TUILE WITH BLACKBERRY COMPOTE By local chef and cookery school teacher, Laura Scott www.howtocookgoodfood.co.uk METHOD
INGREDIENTS For the lemon syllabub:
For the syllabub: Whip the cream until it becomes a thick consistency but isn’t actually whipped into peaks. Measure the lemon zest, juice, wine and sugar into a jug and whisk well.
• 300 ml double cream
Pour the liquids into the thickened cream and fold them together with a spatula - the mixture will become thick instantly because of the lemon juice.
• 1 lemon zest & juice
Place in the fridge to chill while you make the compote and the tuiles.
• 100 ml Reisling wine • 100 g golden caster sugar
For the blackberry compote:
• 250 g frozen blackberries • 2 tbsp Demerara sugar
For the lemon tuiles: • 25 g butter
• 40 g golden caster sugar • 1 egg white • 1 lemon zest only • 40 g plain flour sifted To serve: Place the compote into the bottom of a shot glass/small wine glass then top with the lemon syllabub and serve with a lemon tuile.
14
For the compote: Place the frozen fruit and the sugar into a small saucepan and bring the mixture to the boil then allow it to simmer and cook out the fruit for 5 minutes over a medium/high heat. Allow the compote to cool completely. For the tuiles: Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees.
Melt the butter in a pan then pour it into a mixing bowl and whisk in the sugar. In another bowl, whip the egg white until it begins to look foamy then pour this into the butter mixture and combine well. Sift in the flour then and add the lemon zest then fold the mixture together using a spatula. Using 1tsp of the mixture, place it onto a lined baking tray and spead it out to form a large disc (3-4cm). You will be able to add one more disc to the baking tray but no more so have two baking trays on the go at once - one for the raw mix and one for the cooked tuiles. Bake the tuiles (one tray at a time) for 5 minutes then lift onto a greased rolling pin to set their curved shape. Once cool, move them to a wire rack and re-use the baking tray until the mixture has been used up. f @outandaboutmagazines

NATURE
HOW TO MAKE A
Bee hotel
Solitary bees are important pollinators and a gardener’s friend. Help them by building a natural bee hotel for any outside space and watch them buzz happily about their business. Unlike the familiar bumblebee and honeybee, most of our bees do not make colonies but are actually solitary. The female spends most of her life searching for suitable nesting sites. Some species will nest in holes in the ground, while others will look for old beetle holes or hollow stems in which to lay their eggs. If you can provide a suitable home, these bees will come to you. You will need:
An untreated wooden plank, at least 10 cm wide. Plenty of hollow stems of different diameters (including the bees’ preferred 3-5 mm), such as bramble, reed or bamboo. To attract a range of species include 2-10mm diameter holes. Saw, drill, screws and secateurs.
16
A mirror fixing to hang the finished nest up. Building your bee hotel:
Only as you add the final few does the whole thing suddenly lock solid.
Cut the plank into four to make a rectangular frame that the stems will sit inside.
Finally add a backing board to the bee hotel.
Drill guide holes for the screws (to stop the wood splitting) and assemble the frame.
Hang your hotel on a sunny wall, sheltered from rain.
Snip your stems into lengths to fit the frame (as wide as the plank), discarding any bent or knobbly ones. It’s a good idea to include some really big stems (cut with a fine saw), even though they’re no use to the bees; they speed up the assembly stage, look attractive and help shelter lacewings and ladybirds over winter. Lay your frame on a tilted surface and carefully pack it with stems.
f @outandaboutmagazines
Hanging your bee mansion:
What happens next?
Watch as solitary bees investigate your finished bee hotel in the spring. With any luck, the females will lay their eggs inside the stems of your hotel. Each egg is left with a store of pollen for the grub to eat when it hatches. The egg is sealed up behind a plug of mud, in a ‘cell’, and one stem may end up with several ‘cells’ in it. The young bees will emerge the following year. www.surreywildlifetrust.org

CARSHALTON WATER TOWER
CARSHALTON
Water Tower
The Water Tower is a unique Grade II listed early 18th century garden building sited in the grounds of Carshalton House in Surrey. The Carshalton Water Tower is a unique grade II listed building within the grounds of Carshalton House. As the name suggests, it contained a water-powered pump, which supplied water to Carshalton House and the fountains in its garden. However, the building was, and is, much more than this as it contains a suite of rooms such as the Saloon, the Orangery and a splendid early 18th century bathroom. The restored remains of a water wheel can be seen within the
22
wheel pit of the Pump Chamber. This powered the pumps which lifted fresh spring water, from below this chamber, into a cistern, housed in the structure’s crowning tower. There is the bagnio, or bathroom, with its deep plunge bath and exquisite early 18th century tiles, the beautifully proportioned Saloon and the elegant Orangery, which contains a boutique that offers some items special to the Trust. The Trust’s beautiful historic grade II listed landscape garden

comprises the area of the lake which fills naturally, but intermittently. Its mid 18th century informal form replaces that of a formal canal, designed by Charles Bridgeman for John Fellowes about 1716. However, there is still evidence of his original work in the haha and in positioning the Water Tower. Discover a garden folly, also grade II listed, which is built into the hillside situated on the south side of the lake. The façade is stone and is designed in a classical manner. It has the addition of mid 19th century niched flint

flanking walls on either side.
Visiting the Water Tower
The Folly Bridge, or Sham Bridge as it is otherwise known, is false because water cannot flow underneath it. The folly acts as a dam at the north end of the (usually dry) lake. Restored in 2010 this feature is rustic in style and built of brick with stone, flint and clinker patterning.
Visit Carshalton Water Tower to see for yourself this impressive building with the 18th century sunken bath, the remains of the restored water wheel and the view from the roof looking out over the grounds of Carshalton House and the surrounding area.
All this is managed voluntarily by the Friends of Water Tower & The Historic Garden Trust. It’s their 30th Anniversary Season and a new display in the Tower will detail some of the changes over the years.
The Water Tower will be open every Sunday from 24th April from 2.30pm to 5pm. The last opening of the season will be on Sunday 25th September 2022.

LOCAL EVENT
GRAB YOUR TRAINERS AND GET READY FOR THE ASHTEAD 10K Ashtead 10k ‘eco-race’ and 2k fun run - 2022 It’s billed as the ‘greenest race in Britain’ and Ashtead 10k does not disappoint.
Rianna’s Fund
The course involves a route through the varied woodland habitats of the Common, including open areas of previously burnt woodland and regrowth, coppiced areas, and the ancient oaks for which the common is famous. The route is undulating, with total ascent and descent of not more than around 250m. The route follows wide grassy footpaths, bridleways and tracks through the forest, and in its mid-section features views over farmland to Malden Rushett and beyond. 10k race entry in 2022 is £17, (2k fun run is £5) which includes entry processing fee, eco-medal, free raffle, licences and permits, and Britain’s ‘greenest’ race!
Ashford 10k has raised thousands for charity, with the bulk of the proceeds going to Rianna’s Fund. Steve and Debbie Davenport set up the charity in memory of their eight-year-old daughter Rianna, who was killed in 2003 by a falling tree at her school in Ashtead. Over the past decade the charity has worked on a number of projects dedicated to educating and improving the lives of underprivileged children, from building a new school for more than 640 children in Kampala, Uganda, to building a new children’s home in Mumbai, India. www.riannasfund.org

COUNCILLOR CLIVE WOODBRIDGE is Epsom and Ewell’s new Mayor
Councillor Clive Woodbridge was officially recognised as the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell for this year at the Council’s annual Mayor Making ceremony at Bourne Hall, Ewell on Monday 16 May. As Mayor for the year 2022/2023, Clive will have a full diary from day one with a number of civic events planned through the year including visits to residents, community and sports groups, as well as representing the borough’s residents at formal Platinum Jubilee activities. On becoming Mayor, Clive said, “It is a real honour to be chosen by my peers to be Mayor of Epsom and Ewell, a borough that has been my home for more than 40 years. I’m really looking forward to using
this time as an opportunity to highlight the many individuals and groups who do so much to make this a very special place, where people care for one another and take great pride in where they live. I hope to visit as many residents and local organisations as possible in my term of office and showcase what a truly wonderful community this is.” Clive has been a councillor representing the residents of Ewell since 2007. Over the past 15 years he has fulfilled a number of different roles at Epsom & Ewell Borough Council, including being Chair of both the Leisure and Planning committees. support their efforts to bring the community together and open a brand-new Pump Track through Places to Ride. “As we enter the final period of allocating grants through the fund, we are incredibly proud to see how it has already enabled so many people from a range of backgrounds – regardless of age, gender, ability or ethnicity – to get involved with cycling.” Charles Johnston, Sport England Director of Property continued: “Sport England is proud to be delivering, in partnership with British Cycling, the single biggest government investment into community cycling facilities the country has seen in recent years. The investment will provide more facilities such as tracks and bike centres, where people can ride confidently and safely, as well as access to essential equipment they need to have a go.

SCHOOLS
SCHOOL’S OUT FOR
Summer
With the new term fast approaching here are some tips to help you be prepared The summer holidays are in full swing, and thoughts of school are very much at the back of your mind. But all too soon September will be upon us. The new term brings new teachers, new classrooms and for some, starting a new school. It can be a busy time, so here are some tips to make the transition a little bit easier. Time for sleep
Label everything
If your name’s not on it it’s bound to go AWOL. Encourage your child to hang up their coats and jumpers and to take care of their belongings. Talk to them about what to do if they lose something. The chances of a missing item being returned are far higher if it is labelled. Know your route
Routines are often the first thing to slide when the holidays start. Bedtimes vary and children are allowed to sleep in late. Tiredness does not bode well for learning, so introducing set bedtimes and a morning alarm call ahead of the first day of school should avoid any first day irritableness.
If your child is starting a new school, then take time during the holidays to do a practice run so you know your route in advance. If travelling by public transport it’s also worth checking timetables and ensuring you know the nearest stops.
Healthy habits
While uniforms are largely compulsory, there are ways you can involve your child in the process of getting ready for school. Let them choose a bag, lunch box, pick a pair of shoes or buy stationery supplies. Don’t leave uniform to the last minute, sizes often sell out quickly.
Breakfast, as they say, is the most important meal of the day and skipping it is a no-no, if you want your little ones to start off on the right foot. Ensure you leave enough time for your child to sit down and eat a nutritious breakfast.
Get shopping
Night before
There’s something to be said about forward planning. Avoid the stresses of the morning school run by organising as much as possible the night before. Pack lunches, sort out uniforms and PE kits, and have school bags ready so that you don’t have to run around at the last minute trying to find bits and pieces.
