A taste
OF SURREY LIFE
Sisley White is a local food blogger and lifestyle writer who has fallen in love with Surrey and all that it has to offer… even during lockdown. Moving house between lockdowns, Sisley is one of the newest residents of Banstead after moving to the area from Wimbledon to be with her fiancé Sam. Now in their first home together they are using their lockdown walks to explore the beautiful area and discover places to visit when they are allowed to reopen. When at home, Sisley is enjoying her favourite past time of baking and cooking. Sisley has been a food writer for many years, she is in the top 50 UK Food bloggers in the UK and in 2021 she will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of her blog www.sewwhite.com. It is an exciting time to rediscover her well established reader favourite recipes but it’s also worth checking on her website regularly to see what exciting new recipes have popped up after she has tested, photographed and written the recipes to share with everyone. Sisley produces incredible yet easy to make at home cakes, bakes and sweet treats, along with easy family
favourite main meals. We would also recommend checking out her sumptuous range of cocktails which will be very popular when lockdown is over and we can celebrate with each other again. Sisley says, “I love food and being able to experiment in the kitchen and share my recipes with people around the world is a dream come true.” Now living in Surrey, Sisley is excited to discover more of the food and drink locations on her doorstep plus seek out the hidden gems too. From visiting Mayfields Lavender farm to try their edible Lavender, to visiting Denbies to find a wine for her wedding. Sisley wants to experience it all. “I have had so many recommendations of brilliant places to eat locally in Surrey and I can’t wait to visit when they re-open. Cooking at home is fun but I will enjoy the luxury of someone else making the food for me to enjoy”. Support Sisley and her recipe creating business by visiting her website.

DECORATING
• Preheat the oven to 160ºC / 150ºC Fan / Gas 3 / 320ºF.
• To make the cream topping – add the double cream to a bowl.
• Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. • Draw a circle on the paper – about 30cm in diameter. • Put the egg whites in a clean dry mixing bowl. • Whisk with an electric whisk until the egg whites resemble soft peaks. • Gradually add the caster sugar a little at a time. Make sure the whisk is on a medium to high speed until the mix starts to go stiff and glossy. • Mix the white wine vinegar and cornflour in a cup until smooth. • Add the mix into the egg white mix to make it glossy. • Spoon the egg white meringue onto the circle drawn on the greaseproof paper in blobs. • Pull a dessert or serving spoon around the circle to make a shallow trench and link all the blobs of meringue together. (This will be for the cream and toppings to sit in). • Pop into the oven and reduce the temperature to 140ºC / 120ºC Fan / Gas 1 / 100ºF. Bake for 1 hour–1 hour 15 minutes, until the outside is hard but still white. • Turn off the oven and leave the cooked pavlova inside the oven at least an hour or overnight to cool and dry. f @outandaboutmagazines
@outaboutmag
• Add in the vanilla paste (or vanilla extract). • Sieve in the icing sugar. • Whisk the mix until you have a thick mixture with stiff peaks. (You can do this with an electric whisk.) • Gently spoon the stiff cream into the trench in the meringue. • The pavlova is now ready for you to decorate. • Top with chocolate Easter eggs and anything else you would like (sprinkles are a great choice).

2021
A BRIGHTER YEAR FOR EPSOM It has been a hard 12 months for everyone but with a plan in place for gradually unlocking businesses throughout the Spring, and a number of unveilings, events and openings planned for the months ahead, there are plenty of reasons to visit Epsom this summer!
A VIBRANT NEW LOOK FOR EPSOM STATION Go Epsom has commissioned British artist Eliza Southwood to create a series of unique posters, all about Epsom. The posters will be mounted on the staircase walls at Epsom station, greeting all visitors to the town. Reminiscent of the famous travel inspired posters of the 1920’s and 1930’s but with a distinct, modern slant, the artwork emphasises Epsom’s creative and artistic links.
Art for Everyone The Horton Arts Centre will be opening in 2021. Horton Chapel Arts & Heritage Society was set up in 2016 as a registered charity, to preserve this important part of local heritage. They have been busy throughout lockdown, renovating and converting the abandoned Horton Chapel into a vibrant creative hub for everyone to enjoy.
This new venue, The Horton, due to open in 2021, will offer an exciting programme of live performance, workshops and courses for adults and children, exhibitions and events, a cafe-bar, plus space hire for rehearsals, filming, special events, meetings and celebrations.

FIND YOUR WAY AROUND EPSOM A new town map of Epsom has been created during lockdown, hand drawn by Surrey based artist, Clare Mallison, the map is full of perfectly detailed illustrations of heritage and landmark buildings along with quirky facts and details about Epsom, past famous residents and events. On the reverse, there is information about visiting Epsom, eating out, history and heritage. At the printers now, the map will be widely available locally by mid March, in time to welcome visitors back to the town centre after lockdown.
EPSOM IN BLOOM As well as public art projects, Go Epsom is getting behind planting projects throughout Epsom. New planters have been purchased, they will be installed this Spring, enhancing and greening up the town centre. Volunteer planting projects are planned and a new pop up green space will be created – find out more or even get involved with Epsom in Bloom projects by emailing info@epsombid.co.uk

BANSTEAD WOODS
Narnia
IN BANSTEAD WOODS Discover the Narnia trail at Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs Nature Reserve The wonderfully magical characters from CS Lewis’ classic children’s tale The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe have been carefully sculptured from standing deadwood by talented chainsaw sculptor Ella from The Tree Pirates and installed at various points throughout Banstead Woods and Chipstead Downs Nature Reserve. Lucy Pevensey can be found waiting by the lamppost near the car park and Aslan the lion sits proudly only a few metres away. A short walk across the field and left into the woods is where you will discover the snow queen standing tall. Then a short stroll away you can even walk through the wooden wardrobe, pushing aside the wooden hanging coats. This wonderful trail has been in place since 2017 and was installed by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council’s Greenspaces team with permission from The CS Lewis Company Ltd. f @outandaboutmagazines
@outaboutmag
“Children will be able to step through the wardrobe and discover characters from CS Lewis’s famous book, while also discovering the site’s wonderful flora and fauna”, says Cllr Dr Lynne Hack, deputy leader and executive member for environment. Chipstead Downs and Banstead Woods have some of the finest views in the North Downs and is hugely popular with runners, dog walkers and nature lovers. Banstead Woods encompasses 250 acres of beautiful ancient woodland, with history stretching back for nearly a thousand years, to the time of the Domesday Book in 1086. In Bluebell season (mid-April to May), Banstead Woods are carpeted in beautiful Bluebells, especially in the old Orchard area. As you walk through the woods, you do see pockets of bluebells but it’s when you get to the Orchard area that there are blankets of Bluebells to enjoy.

TADWORTH ART GROUP
TADWORTH
Art Group Stays online for their spring exhibition 14th - 23rd May An online exhibition for an art group that has been holding their traditional exhibitions in church halls for over 40 years is a step into the unknown for all concerned – not only for the artists who have never put together anything quite as technical and complex as that before, but also for the public, some of whom have never bought so much as a bag of groceries online, let alone a work of art. But times have changed and the mould has been broken, some might say forever, because online art has introduced what was a traditional local exhibition to the whole world. And, when art lovers the other side of the planet are now viewing paintings that usually find a home no further than five miles from that church hall, nothing can ever be the same again. So, when Tadworth Art Group set sail last November on the good ship ‘Internet’, it truly was a voyage of discovery. Would people really be able to appreciate a 90cms x 60cms painting reduced to the size of a
thumbnail? Would they be able to navigate their way round a virtual art gallery? And, more importantly, would they be confident that their online purchase would lead to the prompt delivery of something they would be happy to hang on their wall. Well, as it turned out, nobody needed to worry. After the initial stampede for paintings on the opening day, a steady stream of buyers continued over the following two weeks, and from the feedback Tadworth Art Group received, all were delighted with their purchases and many were surprised how easy their experience had been. From Tadworth Art Group’s point of view it had been a resounding success and any trepidation or concerns had been washed away from the good ship ‘Internet’s’ decks, particularly when the demographics showed that there were buyers from all over the U.K. and their website had ‘hits’ from countries as far afield as New Zealand, Saudi, USA and many other European countries.
Will Tadworth Art Group ever return to their traditional exhibitions? Without a doubt! We all long to meet up and rub shoulders again, to view paintings in the flesh and talk art over a glass of something refreshing. But, be assured, online art is here to stay, so don’t miss TAG’s next exciting exhibition from 14th to 23rd May. Visit www.tadworthartgroup.com for more information.

CHESSINGTON GARDEN CENTRE FARM SHOP While we are avid meat eaters here at Chessington Garden Centre we also understand the impact and benefits of an all-round balanced diet and the need to be thinking green, which has been a huge driver when developing our plans in recent years, now working with suppliers from the local areas to bring that dream to life. We are consciously thinking about the sustainability of what we eat, and it leans heavily into our thinking with our state of the art veggie butchers and our more traditional fresh fruit and veg!
We are also excited to announce that we will be joining forces with the wonderful team at Hill House Farm. As a family run business, it is very exciting to join forces with another family and bring our two passions together. The Farm’s state of the art butchery will be an integral part of the new 410sqm Sedum farm shop project, which is due to open mid-March. The farm’s inaugural butchers’ shop will feature its free range, farm reared produce with great provenance, including its renowned Gloucester Old Spot pork, its grass-fed Southdown lamb and Belted Galloway and Dexter beef. As part of this expansion, the farm will be developing its ‘farm to fork’ offering and is looking to collaborate with other like-minded farms and producers across the Surrey Hills, who share its ethos and passion for sustainable farming.
Being able to expand its offering to feature an extensive range of locally sourced meats is the next natural step for the farm. Bringing together a passion for outdoor living and cooking at Chessington Garden Centre with a passion for fresh, local home-grown meat and produce has felt like the next big logical step. Not only can we now offer exciting, innovative ways to cook, smoke or grill but also the products to now go hand in hand with that lifestyle. With Hill House Farm offering ‘farm to fork’ lamb, pork, beef and turkeys at Christmas, all butchered and traditionally prepared in house, not only will customers get to taste the quality but understand where and how it fits into the Sedum Farm Shop ethos.
Together we will work hard to prepare our produce to the same high standards you would expect in any high-end establishment.

HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE KICKSTART THEIR
Careers
New Successful Sutton schemes will help businesses attract and nurture new talent in a post-pandemic world Sutton businesses will soon be supported in helping young people kickstart their careers with a free programme provided by Successful Sutton Business Improvement District (BID). Sutton Job Hub, a fully-funded scheme in partnership with DWP, will provide businesses with a free, dedicated, recruitment service, tailored to different sectors across Sutton and help employers give the borough’s 18 to 24-year-olds an opportunity into employment.
16
The scheme is just one of the ways the BID is proactively supporting businesses through the COVID-19 pandemic as it looks to ensure employers receive the help they need – free of charge – to attract and take on new employees as they turn economic recovery back into growth. The Job Hub will initially provide employability and skills advice for residents, as well as training opportunities and referrals to job vacancies linked to their career choices, before widening its scope to

ADVERTORIAL advertise vacancies, for free, for local businesses and organisations with close links to the BID and the wider Sutton borough. These jobs will be advertised through the BID’s website and on social media, giving businesses a route directly into the local area to attract residents, some of who may have lost jobs during the pandemic. The Job Hub is also the borough’s gateway for the Kickstart Scheme, which offers government funding to businesses creating new job placements for unemployed 16 to 24-year-olds. BID manager Patricia Park said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer this service and would urge businesses to get involved as soon as they can.
“As this is a fully-funded scheme in partnership with the DWP, this comes at no cost to businesses and is a great way for employers and local agencies to attract and employ sector-skilled local people. Without these schemes, our young people, who were just a year ago looking forward to starting bright and prosperous careers, are going to be the furthest away from the job market post-lockdown. Sutton Job Hub will, with the help of employers, ensure our borough gives them the support they need to either kickstart or resume their careers close to home. “Also, being able to offer the additionality of a free-to-use, Sutton-centric, online job platform off the back of these services will only benefit employers further, as it will allow for any resident to apply for roles created through the Sutton Job Hub.”

Fantastic Accolade FOR SUTTON CARE TEAM
Home Instead Sutton has recently become the latest in a long line of Home Instead offices to be awarded a Care Quality Commission (CQC) outstanding rating which is testament to the hard work of its caregivers and office team despite the challenges of the pandemic. Independent regulatory body the CQC highlighted in a report dated January 2021 how well led the company is, and how clients were treated with utmost respect and dignity. The report also praised Home Instead for its personalised approach, particularly in matching caregivers to clients based on similar interests, ensuring that a meaningful and fruitful relationship develops. There were very many positive comments from clients, their families and our CAREGivers who were interviewed by the inspectors as part of the review and many of them were included in their full report which can be viewed on the website. We are delighted to receive this wonderful accolade from the Care Quality Commission. It means we have been recognised for the high quality, person centred care we provide on a regular basis to all our clients.
Owner Tony Ward, said “For 11 years we have made a positive difference to the lives of seniors across the London Borough of Sutton As a pensioner myself, I can identify with some of the challenges of reaching later life and I appreciate as well as anyone the benefits of keeping your independence and receiving care at home”. “It has been a difficult time during the pandemic but we have managed to test all our Caregivers and Staff on a weekly basis and, to date, 96% of our team have received the first dose of the vaccine.” “We are also proud to announce that we are sponsoring the new series of LOVE YOUR GARDEN on ITV at 8pm every Monday.”

SURREY LAWNS & GARDENS This was our first grass cut of 2020
IT’S TIME TO GET OUT
in the garden
It’s a great time to prepare your garden ahead of spring and local landscape gardener, David Field, gives us a few tips on getting ready for the warmer days ahead. START CUTTING YOUR LAWN
PLANNING
MULCHING
After a winter off and with everything now starting to grow, I would recommend now is the perfect time for the first cut. Make sure only to trim the lawn and with sharp mower blades, this will encourage growth. (See the righthand page for our lawn renovation program if you think your lawn is past its best).
Now is the perfect time to think about your garden and what you want to achieve this year. Start a Pinterest board or get ideas from friends. You could do something small like order your summer bedding or grab a piece of paper and design a master plan. (A master plan is your absolute ideal - go big, you can always down scale plans.)
Mulching improves the soil, holds more water in through the summer and slows down weed growth. The two best types of mulch are compost and manure in my opinion. Weeds are at a minimum at this time of year and all the leaves have dropped. Start by weeding your borders and cutting back any unwanted growth. Clear away all debris and apply a slow release fertilizer. If you want to divide plants now is a perfect time, either discard if they are over congested, or transplant to spaces you want to fill. Next, apply a covering of material over the border, being careful not to bury plants completely. We offer a compost for sale in loose loads, this is a far more cost-effective way of mulching than bags.

DORKING WANDERERS FOOTBALL CLUB
AN INTERVIEW WITH
Jordan Clark Director of Football and Education at Dorking Wanderers Football Club, Jordan Clark gave us an insight into what it is like being part of one of Surrey’s best up and coming football clubs around. By Pia Talbot
How have you been coping over lockdown? ‘Lockdown has been very difficult in so many ways, but it’s also been enlightening in others. Difficult because I’ve not been able to fulfil my role as I’d like, both on and off the field, so on the grass and in the classroom and also, it’s taken away a lot of the daily activities in my life which have been hard. Things that you take for granted, like going to a soft play with my sons or something like that, it’s the little things that you usually do, going for a coffee with friends or stuff like that, those things that have been taken away have been difficult for me because I’m quite a social person, but also it’s been enlightening because it’s shown me what’s important which is, your family, your kids, health, both mentally and physically and why that is so important that you maintain and keep on top of. So, for me, a summary would be that it’s been difficult to manage and take away things from my normal day-to-day life, but also it’s been enlightening to show me what’s really important’.
Why did you choose to get into football and education? ‘It spans back to my early secondary school days, I was a very keen footballer, played at a decent level throughout my career, but I always knew I wanted to be involved in sport from a young age. Early on it was a P.E. teacher and then it was only when I started to do one of these programs when I got to sixteen, looking at what I wanted to do next, one of these programs came up at my school and I did it for three years. Throughout

my three years there, it was the best time of my life and I enjoyed being educated and training and playing full time and then that showed me and I thought ‘yeah’, I actually want to impact on people’s lives in the same way that my academy manager did and take it further in my own career which lead on to me studying football and education further and now I am where I am today’.
What, in your opinion, makes a great footballer? ‘I think there are a multitude of components, there’s no magic potion that you can put together and that would be a star footballer, so I think some of the key things you would need to consider are mentality, the mindset and thought process around the game is something that, in my opinion, is the most important, so to be able to take on instruction, develop and understand that instruction and put it into practise is probably the key skill. On a football pitch, as a coach and as a player, in my opinion, the most vital skill is observation, so being able to observe an element of the game that then impacts how you then make a decision, both as a coach and as a player, is what makes you either an ok, good or outstanding coach is that observation, obviously you have the physical elements, but there’s no right or wrong, if you look at the two best players in the world in terms of Ronaldo and Messi, physically they couldn’t be any more different, but both outstanding in their own right. Yes, you need a certain physicality, but I think it’s all about mindset, going above and beyond, the mentality, to understand and observe the game and be able to make better decisions based on your observations’.

DORKING WANDERERS FOOTBALL CLUB What is the most rewarding part about your job? ‘It’s the journey of the learners, so at the moment, at the end of this year I would’ve educated over 150 learners and each one’s journey’s been different, no two are the same. The most exciting and rewarding part of the job is that journey from the day that I meet them at an open event or trial, to the day they leave me onto their next steps, because it’s not about coming to Dorking Wanderers Academy and it being the final stop on a journey, it is only a stepping stone onto something far greater. Being able to help them grow and watch them grow is the most rewarding part, seeing them develop as an academic and also as a footballer, in whatever way shape or form that takes is the most rewarding part of my job.’
What is your club’s biggest achievement? ‘I would probably say there’s been some outstanding achievements on the football pitch, the first team seeing the section of the club win the Bostik Premier by 22 points, which was the most ever done and we had the most clean sheets, so there’s been some outstanding football achievements, we’ve got the most promotions in 21 years, 12 and hopefully if the season continues this year it will be 13. There’s been lots of achievements on the field, but I would say it’s the impact the club is now having on the community and the stuff they’ve done, from the free school meals during this lockdown, to the way we impact the younger age groups, we’re now impacting people’s futures with the academic profiles and just the nature and how the mindset of the club is now impacting on the surrounding area of Dorking and far beyond that as well. We’re a good club to be a part of and we’ve got a real environment for growth, which is evident from we were ‘jumpers for goal posts’ and park footballers 21 years ago and now we’re a National League South club, some clubs haven’t had that much success in over 150 years, so it’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of the people before me and the people that are still here now from Marc (White) all the way down, that’s probably the clubs biggest achievement’.
highest of highs and if you are happy to go through that day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month, then football’s probably the right place for you. If you want to be good at anything in life you need to dedicate yourself to it, but I think football’s quite a unique situation because of the diversity in football and the interest in football, there’s so many people that can do it. You can go to the poorest of communities and their whole life is football, you can go to the richest of communities and their whole life is also football. It does not discriminate and is a language of its own, so I think if you want to get into it and you want to do well at it, you have to commit yourself to it every day. The minute you take your foot off the gas someone else will slip in front of you and take over and maybe get to where you could have gotten to if you had done that. My biggest bit of advice would be to make sure you commit yourself to it wholly and you have the mindset to take the lows with the highs and know that if you commit yourself, the lows won’t last long, and you’ll reach the highest of highs’.
What do you love most about Dorking and Surrey? ‘Dorking as an area is populated by an ageing population and I find it so unique and welcoming. I’ve now been working in Dorking for six years and the people have been great, the culture, the town is one of a real togetherness, everyone knows each other and that breeds within itself an environment of set ways of doing things and then around that, living in Surrey, it’s a fantastic county to live in, a very good footballing county with some huge clubs situated in the county. I’m originally based in Kent, so moving to Surrey was something out of my comfort zone, but the whole area from its nature walks to its football clubs, everything that I look for, Dorking and Surrey both have.’
What is your advice for anyone wanting to get into football? ‘My advice would be to prepare yourself for ups and downs, so prepare to have the lowest of lows and the f @outandaboutmagazines
