Since moving here, I have made a lot of new friends. “I lived in the same road in Chessington for 65 years and had a wide network of friends, which made the move for me quite a wrench. However, since moving here I now know I made the right choice. My apartment is smashing, there is ample space; I really love the restaurant and the meals are wonderful.”

OVENGLEAMERS
OVENGLEAMERS TOP TIPS FOR LOVING YOUR COOKER 1. I nvest in a non-stick oven liner. They help to catch all those annoying drips that stick to the bottom of your cooker, which later can become a burnt-on mess. Easy to wash or pop in the dishwasher.
2. D o not use harsh chemicals. Instead, try a safer
homemade option using items found around your household. For an all-purpose cleaner and deodorizer, mix together 4 tablespoons baking soda with 1 litre warm water.
3. G et the wiping habit! Wipe away any spillages
immediately with a damp cloth. Don’t give the mess a chance to stay. I know this sounds easy and as hard as you try it is a chore, the oven can still be hot and some of the stuff just doesn’t want to come off but stick with it. Get a microfibre cloth and use it wet with washing-up solution.
4. C over your roast! You need to stop the grease
spitting all over your lovely clean oven. To do this just put a lid on your roast tin or cover with foil or try a roasting bag. This way the inside of your oven and your grill (if its inside your oven) won’t become completely coated in grease when you are cooking. This grease, if left in the oven, becomes burnt on carbon in the long term and is very difficult to get off.
5. G et a professional in to Gleam It! If you really
can’t get all the dirt and grime out of your oven yourself then maybe call and book someone that can. A newly cleaned cooker will be sparkling and clean and if you follow our other tips, you will keep it clean, won’t you?

Gardener’s NOTES
Alex Wigley, Polesden Lacey’s Gardens and Outdoors Manager, writes The extra warmth from the sun in March and April accelerates emerging plants and blossom in the garden, and if you have a glasshouse, temperatures can hit high twenties Celsius driving on germination of seedlings. Without a glasshouse, you can still bring on seedlings with a propagator on your windowsill, which is a great way of growing some early herbs or starting off veg and flowers. Annuals and perennials started off under cover can get a head start with many needing 18-20°C to germinate. Once large enough to handle they can be transplanted into larger pots or module trays and grown on frost-free until ready to plant out in early summer, giving a really cost-effective way of filling your borders. March and April are also the ideal time for sowing vegetables under cover such as tomatoes, chillies,
© NationalTrust
squashes, and peppers, or outside you can direct sow broad beans, carrots and parsnips, and onion sets. Any over wintered seed heads of grasses and perennials need cutting back, and coloured stems of dogwoods should be cut to near the ground to encourage fresh new growth. Mulching with well-rotted organic matter will help suppress weed germination as the temperatures rise, and conserve water through the summer, and a granular organic feed will give the fruit a boost as it comes into growth. In the formal gardens at Polesden Lacey, our fruit cage and vegetable garden use the ‘No Dig’ method where instead of annual digging, layers of mulch are applied year on year which helps develop a better soil structure and encourages soil micro-organisms.

THE HORTON
Surrey HERITAGE AWARDS The HORTON Epsom shortlisted for the Surrey Heritage Awards 2022
Surrey Historic Buildings Trust has announced The Horton Arts Centre as one of the six projects shortlisted for this year’s Surrey Heritage Awards. The awards recognise the design, work and vision behind saving and renovating the grade II listed Horton Chapel, transforming the venue into a not-for-profit venue for arts and culture – The Horton.
A judging panel led by Dr Seán O’Reilly, Director of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation, will be visiting The Horton to assess the project’s achievements alongside other shortlisted projects. The winners will be revealed at a ceremony to be held at Brooklands Museum in Weybridge on 30th March.
The HORTON Epsom A magnificent new destination for arts, heritage and events, created within an iconic and historically significant Grade II-listed chapel space. The Horton is an extraordinary arts and heritage destination with a vision to use creativity and social activities to enrich the community. From the fanfare of its opening in 1901 to final closure in 1997, the former Horton Chapel’s role was to provide solace for people experiencing mental distress, as a place of worship, and from 1961 also as a music therapy centre. The charity Horton Chapel Arts & Heritage Society was set up in 2016 by Epsom residents determined to see Horton Chapel saved from f @outandaboutmagazines
@outaboutmag
“We are delighted that our project has been recognised by Surrey Historic Buildings Trust. The work to create The Horton has been a labour of love and the whole team is immensely proud to have been able to save such a wonderful building for the community. We look forward to being able to open the doors to the public this year.” Maria Reeves, co-founder and project manager.

Renovation work began on-site in 2018, funded primarily by a National Lottery Heritage Fund enterprise grant and ‘section 106’ funds contributed by developers of Epsom’s former psychiatric hospital sites. The sympathetic architectural conversion of The Horton enhances the stunning historic features of the building whilst delivering excellent contemporary facilities and welcoming spaces for performances, events, receptions, conferences, workshops or simply a coffee with friends. The Horton will fully open in spring 2022.

EWELL CASTLE SCHOOL
EWELL CASTLE Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep School
Pupils at Ewell Castle Nursery and Reception feel happy, safe, and secure. They benefit from small class sizes and the warmth that is evident in our interactions and our commitment to nurturing the potential in each child. By ensuring all seven areas of the EYFS curriculum are covered, especially Literacy, Phonics, Mathematics and Language; when compared to the literacy and mathematics achievement levels
with children at other nurseries, (both locally and nationally) our pupils outperform them. At Ewell Castle our pupils learn but they also have fun, enjoying weekly Forest School, Dance, PE, and Art classes as well as less structured play times, when they develop the social skills of sharing and communication as well as natural curiosity and self-confidence.
