I hope you enjoy the articles and stories we have collated for you – there are no articles on Brexit, we promise! The enjoyment of spending time with family over Easter has now been replaced with the excitement of knowing that summer is on its way. We’re finally seeing blue skies again, the sun is breaking through and the spring bulbs have all now flowered. North Surrey is looking beautiful, which means it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the area’s beautiful walks, open spaces and eateries. If you have a favourite

walk or outdoor activity please do let us know and we can share it with other readers in a future edition. At this time of year there are always lots of outdoor events and activities to enjoy with friends and family. In this edition you can read about a fabulous Thai Festival taking place in Epsom in early June, and the world famous Epsom Derby. As a Banstead resident I am really looking forward to the inaugural Banstead Food Festival, that takes place at the end of June, in Lady Neville Park. With a live music stage, hosted by Radio Jackie, a fabulous range of food and drinks to taste and try, and activities to keep children entertained, the Festival is a ‘must see’ for your summer diaries.

THE EPSOM DERBY

THE EPSOM

Derby

When the Queen visits Epsom Her Majesty the Queen is starting to reduce her public engagements, but there is one day each year where she is always going to be seen – The Epsom Derby. Epsom has welcomed Her Majesty The Queen to The Derby for nearly 70 years. As an avid racehorse owner the queen has enjoyed watching many horses run in her colours on the historic Epsom Downs. Indeed, just four days after her coronation in 1953 Her Majesty attended a sun-drenched Epsom Downs racecourse to watch her first runner in the Derby. Aureole, bred by The Queen’s late father, King George VI, finished second and is the closest Her Majesty has come to victory in the race. A year later, the impressive Aureole returned to Epsom Downs to triumph in the Coronation Cup, Her Majesty’s first major victory at the racecourse. It was in 1957 that Her Majesty first enjoyed a Classic success on

8

the Downs when Carroza, who was leased to The Queen by the National Stud, won The Oaks. Amid huge cheering, Her Majesty led her three-year-old filly into the famous Winners’ Enclosure. It was two decades later in 1977, the year of the Silver Jubilee, that The Queen enjoyed her second Oaks success with Dunfermline. Her Majesty narrowly missed out on a third Oaks winner in 2001 when homebred Flight Of Fancy, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, finished second. Her Majesty’s 2011 Derby contender, Carlton House, carried with him a greater sense of expectation than any of his predecessors and was sent off the 5/2 favourite. There was huge media interest ahead of the race but sadly there was no fairytale result as the colt lost a shoe and finished third, a length behind the successful French raider Pour Moi. Her attendance at the Derby has enabled her to exercise her passion for ‘the Sport of Kings’. These images show Her Majesty The Queen L@outandabout_mag

enjoying her day at Epsom Downs, engrossed in the adrenaline rush of racing and the unique carnival atmosphere of Derby Day. The Queen has demonstrated an unwavering dedication and understanding of the breeding, training and racing of the thoroughbred throughout her long reign. The Queen’s involvement in racehorse ownership began in 1949 and has spanned eight decades. In celebration of her 90th Birthday, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presented the Derby trophy to the winning connections of the 2016 Investec Derby, the first time during her reign that Her Majesty The Queen has presented this prestigious trophy. Additionally, the Coronation Cup was re-named for 2016 only as The Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup (sponsored by Investec) in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday. Epsom Chamber Choir are performing a special concert to celebrate their 50th Anniversary Epsom Chamber Choir are busy rehearsing a major concert to mark their 50th anniversary and warmly invite music lovers to help them celebrate in style. The concert, which takes place on Saturday 29th June, comprises Gems of the English Baroque, with Handel’s splendid ‘Dixit Dominus’ taking centre stage. Also included are excerpts from Handel’s oratorio ‘Solomon’ and works from Purcell, one of which has been given an intriguing contemporary twist. The choir and its conductor Mark Biggins will be joined by impressive young soloists and an instrumental ensemble, adding extra excitement to this celebration. Past members of the choir have also been invited to join in what promises to be an exceptionally rousing performance of ‘Zadok the Priest’. Members of the audience will be invited to join choir members for a reception at the end of the evening. Chairman Nic Ash comments: “What started out fifty years ago as a few enthusiastic singers getting together to have fun, has developed into one of Surrey’s leading chamber choirs. We work hard to achieve an exceptionally high level of performance across an adventurous range of music – but with no less enthusiasm or fun!” TICKETS: The concert will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday 29th June at St Martin’s Church in Epsom. Tickets are £16 in advance or £18 on the door (free for under 18s). Italian LIFE

AT 2 BEECHES AVENUE GASTROVINARIA

Vinoteca Italiana has been a staple in Carshalton Beeches for more than six years, offering authentic Italian cooking in a home from home setting. Now husband and wife team Gianni and Hana Quartulli are taking their recipe for success and applying it to their latest business venture – 2 Beeches Avenue, an Italian Gastrovinaria. They have taken over the adjoining premises to the restaurant and opened the Gastrovinaria, which is also the perfect spot for coffee and a pastry – when we say coffee, we mean only the best Italian coffee, rich and intense, made with Napoli’s finest coffee beans – and to while away time enjoying the company of family and friends. Brunch is served from 10am and includes classics such as Egg Benedict and Egg Florentine, there is also a lunchtime menu featuring fresh, colourful salads,

sandwiches, delectable Arancini – homemade stuffed rice balls filled with beef ragu – as well as heartier dishes. Early evening visitors can feast on a platter of antipasto, a selection of Italian cured meats and cheeses, olives and rustic bread, which goes perfectly with a glass of wine. Gianni and Hana embrace the philosophy that Italians live to eat, not eat to live, so the Gastrovinaria is a place of discovery with new and tasty treats to savour on the premises or to take away to enjoy at home. They have regular themed nights such as Steakhouse night, Lobster & Seafood or Tapas & Wine which are well worth a visit. Passionate about all things Italian cuisine, Gianni and Hana have sourced produce from across Italy. Their range of wines from around the world includes many small, regional producers not normally found on supermarket shelves. 2 Beeches Avenue is hosting a Winemakers Dinner with paired wines on May 23. Viticcio has been making wine since 1964 among the rolling green hills of Tuscany wine country in Greve in Chianti, between Florence and Siena. Their team in the vineyards and cellar is made up of people who have grown up together in Chianti and share extensive experience in the field, as well as a deep love for the land. The respect and care they feel for their territory begins in their hearts and is transferred to the careful vineyard management and cellar techniques they practice.

They honour the treasured traditions that teach invaluable winemaking knowledge, and they balance this with innovative technologies. Just as importantly, they respect the environment and recognise the essential need in leaving the land healthy and fertile for the next generations. Since 2003, eight hectares of vineyards are cared for using biodynamic methods; and since 2013, their entire production has been totally organic.

MUSIC AT SANDOWN PARK

Madness

AT SANDOWN PARK An open air concert at Sandown Park Racecourse on Wednesday 24th July 2019

‘Friends, mad heads and countrymen. Lend me your ears. This year be the 40th anniversary of the groupus maximus MADNESS XL And to celebrate the country will be witness to celebrations of Romanesque proportions!’ As Madness embark on their 40th anniversary tour including a concert at Sandown Park on July 24, we hear all about their past and present success from Suggs. What are the qualities that make Madness endure? I think the reason we endure is that we genuinely do enjoy ourselves. From the very beginning you could see the joy in the early videos we made and hear it in the records. The fact that we were friends before this band started is key. I genuinely think the whole spark or art of craft and

18

creativity was a by-product of our friendship. I think that’s what people feel. It’s a genuine experience. It’s not manufactured. I can’t ever remember being onstage and feeling fed up with the people around me. It’s been very flattering and marvellous to see so many different age groups enjoying the band. We are looking forward to this on the tour – people of all ages.

L@outandabout_mag

www.fhwem.com/publishing

MUSIC AT SANDOWN PARK How will you keep yourself match fit for the summer shows? It’s like preparing for war, a war of fun y’know? A war of fun and frolics but, unlike the Romans, we are going to unleash heaven. I have a suspicion that if I didn’t have a few tequila shots before I went onstage I wouldn’t be quite as lubricated in the joints. Tequila and orange juice is the secret of keeping those limbs loose! I suppose our rituals are now so ingrained that I don’t notice what the rest of the band are doing! How do you keep the feeling of it being fresh? Traditionally, we don’t tour for months and months - we gave up on America and they probably gave up on us. Touring for years on end is what drains the lifeblood out of a lot of acts that I see. Each tour we do we try and make unique – and special. We can change the setlist nightly if we wish. The main thing is to keep it exciting for yourself, that’s the way to ensure the audience is kept excited too.

I did wake up with a greyhound in my bed once. We had been to a charity auction at Walthamstow dog track and there was an auction for the greyhound and we won. I came home with a greyhound, which my wife was quite thrilled about. He did alright actually we called him Nutty Boy and he went on to win quite a few races. That was quite a nice time and the nearest I ever got to be an Alex Fergusonesque race horse owner. Turning up at the track as a dog owner was quite an experience. I’m really looking forward to all the racecourse shows. Last time we played at Haydock we had a tremendous gig something like 20,000 people turned up and they were only expecting 10,000. Simply Red had held the record up to that point so I think we are the record holders for Haydock, returning as reigning champions. Are you looking forward to this tour? It really feels like a tour of the people in places where they can have fun – where we can have fun.

Racecourses make up quite a bit of your itinerary, are you fond of a flutter or a day at the track? Racecourses are great we’ve played a few in the past where they have been a few races and then you get a bit of Madness. It’s an unbeatable combination. I have a few flutters every now and then and have a bit of luck on the horses. I’m not a gambling man generally but I like it when you can see the steam coming out of the horses’ nostrils and that whole thing in front of you. I do like it but I’m terrible loser, which has been my saving grace as far as gambling is concerned. It’s stopped me getting too involved.

Tickets are on sale via thejockeyclublive.co.uk Prices starting at £45 for adults and £22.50 for under 18’s. All T&Cs are available on sandown.thejockeyclub.co.uk. There will be hospitality packages available to suit all budgets. In addition to Sandown Park, The Jockey Club Live will be hosting live concerts across Market Rasen, Newmarket, Aintree, Haydock Park and Carlisle racecourses next summer.

I am a Banstead resident myself, as are a number of members of the FHW team. We are all really excited about hosting such a fun day for local families. Banstead is such a great place to live and raise a family, so what better place to organise a fabulous day of great food, refreshing drinks and family fun. Hopefully the sun will be shining and we will have a really great day. We all hope you can join us”. Lady Neville Park, opposite Waitrose, opens its gates at 10.30am, with the event finishing at 7.30pm. Tickets are now available via www.bansteadfoodfestival.co.uk. A family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children) is just £10 when booked online.

EXAM TUTORING

Keep calm AND STAY FOCUSSED As the exam season fast approaches this is an unsettling time of year for many students.

Whether it be Common Entrance, GCSE, A levels or even university exams, it seems that as the weather improves, levels of anxiety increase. There is many a truth in the saying, ‘Timely preparation is the key to success’. So how should we prepare for these all-important, often life-changing tests we are about to undertake? The first thing I would suggest is to have a carefully worked out revision schedule: • What does my exam timetable look like and how many subjects will I have to revise? • Break down each subject into topic modules and list them in the order of difficulty for you. This will help you to prioritise. • Next, estimate the number of hours you will need to thoroughly revise each topic and make a timetable. • Allow yourself time to do practice questions from past papers, with a mark scheme, if available, and time yourself as you write your answer under exam conditions.

can focus your mind to include it at the next attempt. Be strict with yourself when self-marking so that you don’t fall into the trap that you know what to write, even if you forgot to actually write it! • Make sure you have a complete break after every 45 minutes and do something completely different for 15 minutes. Having a work/play balance will help you to overcome the feeling of deprivation and will get the job done.

Remember to breathe! Remember to sleep! This may sound odd, but by taking time out to calm yourself and breathe for one or two minutes in every hour (set your timer to do this) you will be amazed at how efficiently your concentration improves and how refreshed you feel after using this simple mindfulness technique. This period of intense revision and writing exams will not last forever – it will all be over sooner than you imagine and then, you have the long, hot summer holidays to enjoy your freedom…

• Check your answers with the mark scheme and write anything you missed in a different colour pen so that it
