HOBBLEDOWN

Hobbledown’s GRAND REOPENING After months closed, Hobbledown is now open! With a few new social distancing and Covid safety measures, there are still lots of amazing activities to explore and plenty of new additions for 2021. Here are a few things to know about Hobbledown during their grand 2021 reopening.

What social distancing and covid safety measures are in place and what rules must visitors follow?

Rule of 6 and 2 households apply and visitors must also pre-book online. Visits must only be 4 hours, social distancing will be maintained, and face coverings must be worn in animal walkthroughs, shops, toilets and food collection points. All food, drink and high ropes will be ordered and paid for online. Popular activities – high ropes, jumping pillows and water pillows are to be booked (free) online on the day. Your whole experience will be cashless throughout and multiple hand sanitising stations will be provided. As well as a reduced capacity, customers will also get social distancing and hand washing reminder wristbands and signs to remind them throughout. Capacity counts conducted on popular equipment and enhanced

touch point cleaning. Finally, health declarations for all customers and the Hobbledown team. What new additions do you have for 2021?

Our Topperpot’s Thinkery is planned to open on May 17th, which is a theatre that will be used for shows, animal experiences and school/education trio. Also, a new aviary to house our Birds of Prey which will be open in the summer. Do you have any other useful information for the reopening?

Be sure to arrive on time and register with the ‘app’ before you come to save time when you want to order food/drink or book slots for popular activities, including the indoor play barn which will be open from May 17th. By Pia Talbot

Beautiful GARDENS

David Field is the owner of a successful landscaping and garden maintenance company in Surrey. David Field from Surrey Lawns & Gardens manages a team of landscaping and gardening experts working in different divisions of his company, who are also able to provide you with excellent subject knowledge. In one of our previous articles, we mentioned that there is now the option of metal and plastic fencing. Having attended a seminar for Durapost (www.birkdalesales.com/ durapost) we are planning to use this in all our projects. It’s lighter than concrete and a lot more aesthetically pleasing with three different colours and is longer lasting, with the option for different fence designs. Contact him today for a quote on your landscaping and gardening needs.

Case Study: 150ft 1st Durapost installation We recently installed our first Durapost fence and not only were we very impressed with the how much lighter it is to work with, but the customer was extremely happy with the finished look.

NATIONAL TRUST

Gardener’s NOTES

Alex Wigley, Polesden Lacey’s Gardens and Outdoors Manager, writes As we move into May the garden is full of lush new growth driven on by the warm days and showers of last month; but be cautious of cold nights and frosts which can nip new shoots and blossom. If cold weather is forecast, cover half hardy annuals and bedding with some fleece to protect them. Lush new growth on herbaceous perennials should be staked with plant supports; we use silver birch which can be woven into wigwams or cradles. Or you can give some a ‘Chelsea chop’, cutting back hard to make plants bushier and delay flowering. Applying a thick mulch will help suppress weed germination and help retain moisture in the summer. As the threat of frosts clear it is the ideal time to direct sow half hardy annuals such as sunflowers, Zinnia, poppies, Cosmos, cornflowers, marigolds and Nigella into their flowering positions in borders. All of these are great for cutting for the vase. At Polesden Lacey the Cut Flower Garden mixes half hardy annuals with herbaceous perennial plants, shrubs, bulbs and tubers to flower right through to late autumn and into winter with dried flowers and seed heads.

Dahlias and cannas can be planted out to give a tropical feel, and the dark purple foliage of annuals such as Ricinus (or castor oil plant) and amaranthus add to the effect. Now is also the time to direct sow outdoors summer crops such as climbing beans, peas and mange tout, summer squashes and pumpkins, or plant out tomato plants started indoors. Add some colour to the plate with striped, green, yellow, purple tomatoes from pea sized ‘millefleur’ through plum shaped, pear shaped, long pointed and giant beefsteak tomatoes that grow to the size of two hands. The gardens at the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey, nestled in the Surrey Hills near Dorking, offer something for every season; from the vibrant walled Rose Garden in summer to the fragrant Winter Garden in the colder months. Once the country retreat of Edwardian socialite Dame Margaret Greville: today Polesden Lacey welcomes visitors of all ages 363 days a year.

Surrey’sHIDDEN GEM Visiting Polesden Lacey this summer

Polesden Lacey is a real hidden gem, set in the Surrey Hills area of natural beauty. It was once the weekend retreat of Edwardian socialite Dame Margaret Greville. From here she entertained royalty, politicians and celebrities at lavish weekend parties. Visit the house (open subject to government regulations) to see stunning décor, designed to impress: from the glittering gold Saloon to the collection of Dutch Old Master paintings and excellent examples of fine silverware, ceramics and maiolica. The formal gardens are varied and beautiful

throughout the year. Snowdrops and daffodils brighten colder months until the double herbaceous borders come to life in spring, a riot of colour. Visit the stunning walled Rose Garden mid-summer to see more than 2,000 roses in manicured beds and climbing over pergola. The winter garden is a hidden masterpiece that comes to life with colour and fragrance in the depths of the winter frost. Families will enjoy natural play areas, tree swings and fun trails and activities in the holidays. There’s plenty of space to run, fly a kite, go bug hunting or simply take some time to explore the woodland on the estate.

Alongside her friend Helen, they launched The Gin Kitchen with a simple plan to create the finest gin on the planet, an ultra-premium gin; an opulent and triumphant spirit crafted by artisans. They decided to create spirits with powerful and vibrant ingredients.

Success continued in 2018 with the launch of the colour-changing Blushing Monkey Pink Gin. A pink gin that is sweet but not too sweet. In 2019 the distillery won three silver medals at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition for each of their gins. Later that year, head distiller Reeba, created The Ginger Cat gin using tonka beans, orange flower, zest and a little ginger.

Gutsy Monkey Winter Gin was launched in November 2016. In 2017 Dancing Dragontail Summer Gin was launched at Fortnum and Mason’s Piccadilly store and it was such a success they sold out twice during the first month of sale. Eternal Absinthe was also launched in 2017, using rose petals to give it a delicate floral finish and rose gold appearance instead of the bitter green judder normally associated with the traditional spirit.

Careers IN CARE Home Instead Sutton, which has over 20 care roles to fill, is urging local people to consider a career in care.

As the pandemic brings unemployment and an uncertain future for the job market, Home Instead Sutton, which has over 20 care roles to fill, is urging local people to consider a career in care. While there are job losses in sectors such as hospitality, entertainment and retail, the pandemic has caused a surge in demand for home care as people look to protect their loved ones. Of more than 20 caregiver jobs on offer, at least two of them are for live-in caregivers who move into a client’s home to provide care. Tony Ward, owner of Home Instead Sutton, says: “Caregivers join us from a whole range of backgrounds, and that’s how we’re able to offer relationship-led care that is based on the individual’s own needs and character traits. People who have worked in sectors like retail, entertainment and hospitality have accumulated a great set of people skills that translate well into care. We’re urging any of them considering a career change to get in touch with us.”

Hannah joined the company in September 2020, commenting she said: “For 3 years I have worked as a gymnastic and contemporary dance tutor and I reached a point where I wanted to try something new. At first, I doubted whether the care sector was right for me, but it didn’t take me or Home Instead Sutton long to realise that I had a wealth of skills I could apply. “I love the fact that I can provide effective relationship led care and the individuality of each care situation is always so different. There are few jobs that give the same feeling of reward and job satisfaction. I make a meaningful difference to people in the community – I urge people from all walks of life to come on-board with me and my “outstanding” Home Instead colleagues”

Since moving here, I have made a lot of new friends. “I lived in the same road in Chessington for 65 years and had a wide network of friends, which made the move for me quite a wrench. However, since moving here I now know I made the right choice. My apartment is smashing, there is ample space; I really love the restaurant and the meals are wonderful.”

CHINTHURST SCHOOL

CHINTHURST SCHOOL Preparing for Senior School Chinthurst provides a broad and exciting education preparing children for happy and fulfilled lives, with the skills to embrace opportunities and overcome challenges they meet along the way. This is achieved through prioritising close relationships between staff and children over everything else. This ensures that teachers know when to challenge, stretch or support, and children feel happy and safe, with the confidence to try new things and the resilience to learn from their mistakes.

2020 Independent School of the Year Award in recognition of this successful approach.

A comprehensive wellbeing programme, Wellbeing at Heart, is at the centre of school life and builds the skills required to navigate life’s inevitable ups and downs. Chinthurst was a finalist for the

They leave as well rounded individuals ready to embrace the next stage of their education and with an enthusiasm for life which is very much a reflection of the Chinthurst spirit.

As a junior school of Reigate Grammar School (RGS), Year 5 children benefit from an early offer to RGS should this be an appropriate path for them, without the need to sit the entrance exam. Chinthurst’s strong academic provision and unique ethos, provides ideal preparation for the children’s transition to RGS and other top independent and state schools.

SEATON HOUSE SCHOOL

A WARM WELCOME AT SEATON HOUSE SCHOOL Providing children with an excellent start to their learning journey. Seaton House School provides children with an excellent start to their learning journey and girls achieve academic and scholarship success at both grammar and local independent schools. This September 63% of our Year 6 pupils were offered places at Wallington/Nonsuch High Schools and many girls received academic, sport and music scholarship offers at independent schools. Seaton House is currently ranked 4th in the Sunday Times Top 100 Prep Schools in England and is consistently ranked in the top five. Small class sizes ensure that every pupil is known as an individual and supported to ensure that they make the most of their gifts and talents. Alongside excellent academic teaching the girls have opportunities to develop their artistic, musical, dramatic and sporting talents.

There are specialist teachers for almost all subjects to ensure that the girls receive the very best education. The girls regularly compete in a range of musical and sporting events both locally and nationally and the school offers a wide range of extra curricular clubs. Outside speakers and educational visits are an integral part of the school’s curriculum. Pastoral care is of the highest calibre with staff taking a keen interest in the personal development of all pupils. Courtesy, good manners and kindness are expected as the norm and by the end of year 6, our girls leave us as independent, confident, curious and creative individuals fully prepared for the next step in their education having made lasting memories and friendships. Please do contact us to see what makes Seaton House such a special place, you will always be assured of a warm welcome.
