Since moving here, I have made a lot of new friends. “I lived in the same road in Chessington for 65 years and had a wide network of friends, which made the move for me quite a wrench. However, since moving here I now know I made the right choice. My apartment is smashing, there is ample space; I really love the restaurant and the meals are wonderful.”

TADWORTH ART GROUP
TADWORTH
Art Group View their Summer exhibition 13th - 15th May, Peter Aubertin Hall in Chipstead
At this time of year, the Tadworth Art Group’s close-knit family of amateur and professional artists is busy preparing for their Summer Exhibition at the Peter Aubertin Hall in Chipstead on the weekend of 13th - 15th May. Lockdown has kept them away from this venue for two years but encouraged by the response to their restricted exhibition in Tadworth in November they are planning to be back with a full-on show in 2022, exactly as in preCovid days! The artists’ work covers a wide range of subjects and styles including landscape, portraiture and still life in acrylic, oil,
watercolour, pastel, and mixed media. Over the winter the artists have continued to paint together at their regular weekly meetings, working on themes and projects. During the winter they have recruited a number of new members. New blood means there will be new styles, new approaches and new faces to look forward to! At the same time established members, too, have continued to enjoy success beyond the group having had work exhibited at the prestigious Mall Galleries in London, for example and illustrative artist Judit Matthews has seen her third children’s book go into print.
TAG would like to thank all their loyal followers for their enduring interest and support and very much look forward to greeting visitors again in May at the Peter Aubertin, Hall Elmore Road, CR5 3SE. Friday 13th May 18.30 - 22.00 (Meet the artists over wine and nibbles) Saturday 14th May 10.00 - 18.00 Sunday 15th May 10.00 - 17.00
In the meantime, for further information about the artists, pictures of their work and details of opening times, please go to their website at www.tadworthartgroup.com.

Raff Radio (as it was originally called) was opened in 1952 by Mr. Chlapik, a Czechoslavakian gentlemen who had been serving in the RAF, based in the UK as a radio operator. He wanted to open the store under the name ‘RAF Radio’ but due to the RAF declining the use of their famous initials, he added an extra ‘F’ and RAFF RADIO was established. In 1972, the current family owners took over the business and its now second generation owned and run. Over the years the size of the business has increased. The store then changed its name to ‘RAFF Electrical’ as it remains to this day, we continue to serve generations of customers, keeping them safe in the knowledge that they will receive excellent advice from our experienced team along with very competitive prices.

POLESDEN LACEY
RETURN OF THE
Swift
Water tower restoration brings new habitat for swift population at Polesden Lacey With UK swift populations declining by a startling 57% over the last twenty years, the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey is taking up a unique opportunity to support this beautiful species. While essential works have taken place on the water tower at Polesden Lacey, swift nesting boxes have also been installed, giving the birds a vital place to nest. In years gone by, swifts would have traditionally nested in gaps and imperfections in building roofs, such as churches and old structures. However, as with the water tower repairs, where roofs are fixed and improved around the UK to make them watertight and insulated, the number of places the birds can find as home is becoming increasingly limited. Using wood from the estate, Polesden Lacey’s carpentry volunteers have made swiftfriendly boxes that will be installed under the rafters of the
12
roof of the water tower, providing a safe and quiet haven.
water and irrigating the surrounding land.
‘It’s been over 10 years since we’ve been able to give the water tower a makeover and the installation of the swift boxes is a real bonus.’ Says Katherine Mills, Polesden Lacey’s General Manager.
The water, which has its source from Ranmore Common and Polesden estate’s southern border, is now used for the gardens and fire hydrants. Amazingly, it travels all the way down to the base of the valley and up again, before flowing up to the top of the Tower purely by the power of gravity. Now that’s a real force of nature.
Area Ranger, Alex McCafferty, added ‘We’re looking at places across the estate to provide the best possible nesting conditions for swifts. The scaffolding being erected around the water tower was the perfect opportunity.’ The water tower itself has a fascinating history and was a significant feat of engineering. Built over 120 years ago by Ambrose Poynter, it supplied water to the main mansion house and surrounding estate buildings. The tank within the building has a staggering capacity of over 300,000 litres and has been environmentally repurposed over the years supplying drinking
f @outandaboutmagazines
Work is now completed on the renovations works on the tower which included improvements to the bespoke French Doors designed to house the tank halfway up the tower, as well as fixing the decorative edging and making the roof as watertight as possible. The next time you visit, look up at the tower in the stable courtyard. You’ll see the bird boxes and hopefully the swifts will have taken up residence.

Gardener’s NOTES
Alex Wigley, Polesden Lacey’s Gardens and Outdoors Manager, writes May and June in the garden is about lush new spring growth and a wealth of flowers, and one of the essential groups for me are alliums. Alliums are part of the onion family with a huge range of sizes, shapes, and colours to choose from originating from bulbs which come up year after year.
Some smaller varieties will flower at 30 or 40 cm high for the front of the border such as ‘Powder Puff ’ and others can reach heights of up to 90cm such as ‘Mount Everest’ with many in between.
Alliums have been bred to have a variety of shapes of head with tight spherical balls such as ‘Purple Autumn is the ideal time to purchase dormant bulbs Sensation’ drumstick shaped ‘sphaerocephalum’ to however pot grown bulbs can be bought from garden extraordinary shaped Allium Schubertii which looks like an exploding firework, or Allium ‘Hair’ with centres now where you can see them in flower. The two first decisions are colour and size depending green tendril like extensions on the flower. where in the border they are going to flower. Alliums Alliums are a fantastic addition to our borders at Polesden Lacey, where you can see ‘Purple Sensation’ range from white such as ‘Mont Blanc’ through in our Spring Borders, ‘Mount Everest’ alongside yellow allium flavum, pinks and purples such as our Pet Cemetery paths, and allium atropurpureum nigrum ‘Pink Jewel’ and ‘Purple Rain’ through to along the south terrace. blues such as allium azureum.

BOURNE HALL
THE PAST COMES
alive!
A Tribute for the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations. May 28, 9.30am - 5pm in Bourne Hall Park
On a day where the past comes alive, learn about the local connections of past Kings and Queens, and get an insight into the medieval period as part of events marking the Queen’s Jubilee. Meet two ladies in waiting from the court of Elizabeth I at Nonsuch who will tell what life was like in the palace which she loved to visit. Learn of the changes she made to fit in her huge wardrove of dresses and how Essex burst into Elizabeth’s bedroom before she had time to put on her
makeup, the blunder which was to lead to his execution. Chat to Charles II the Merry Monarch, traditionally the most popular of English Kings, and hear about his visits to Epsom in the Spa period. Meet Queen Victoria who came to the Derby at the beginning of her reign and discover what happened. Was she amused? Meanwhile the Paladins of Chivalry will bring the medieval world to light with living history displays all day including cooks preparing a meal, musicians to entertain you, an armourer repairing armour, noble ladies sewing and doing embroidery, an apothecary preparing potions and men at arms gambling and telling tall stories. See the medieval tented encampment furnished
with historically accurate furniture and equipment which you can handle. You can witness the men at arms in their training session and combat. After lunch there’s a chance for the children to take part in their own battle! The lord of Bourne Hall is charged with trying to kill a rival in front of the king, and now he must fight for his life in trial by combat. In the afternoon there will be a display of how to arm a knight followed by a full tournament. Finishing with a Grand Melee when all the knights fight to the last man standing.
DESIGN A POSTAGE STAMP To celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Bourne Hall have an exciting children’s competition - design a postage stamp to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and you may win the chance to have tea with the Mayor of Epsom and Ewell in his historic parlour at the Town Hall. There are two age groups 4 - 7 and 8 - 12. Your design can be of anything you like - a picture of the Queen or other member of the Royal
18
Family, perhaps the Queen at the Derby, or just the Derby, a street party, or another Jubilee event. You can download a template for your design from the Bourne Hall website www.bournehall. org or pop into Ewell Library at Bourne Hall and pick one up. Better still they will have materials, so you can complete your design there and then. They will be available from 26 April,

and you can leave your entry with the library, but make sure you put your contact details on it along with your age. If you download a template, when you have finished your design email it to dbrooks@epsom-ewell.gov.uk ‒ again, don’t forget your contact details and age. Designs must be in by June 1.

EWELL CASTLE SCHOOL
EWELL CASTLE Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep School
Pupils at Ewell Castle Nursery and Reception feel happy, safe, and secure. They benefit from small class sizes and the warmth that is evident in our interactions and our commitment to nurturing the potential in each child. By ensuring all seven areas of the EYFS curriculum are covered, especially Literacy, Phonics, Mathematics and Language; when compared to the literacy and mathematics achievement levels
with children at other nurseries, (both locally and nationally) our pupils outperform them. At Ewell Castle our pupils learn but they also have fun, enjoying weekly Forest School, Dance, PE, and Art classes as well as less structured play times, when they develop the social skills of sharing and communication as well as natural curiosity and self-confidence.
