EDITOR’S TIPS A WW2 Christmas

Days of Steam

14th December, Bourne Hall For many families, the most difficult part of a wartime Christmas would be spending the festive season apart from loved ones. Many men were fighting abroad in the armed forces or were being held as prisoners of war. Women might also be away in the services or carrying out war work. Many children spent Christmas away from home as evacuees. By the end of the war, thousands of families had suffered the death of a family member either in action or from enemy bombing raids. Christmas luxuries were especially hard to come by at a time when even basic foods were scarce. People were forced to find substitutes for key festive ingredients. Gifts were often homemade and practical, and children’s toys were often made from recycled materials. Cards were smaller and printed on flimsy paper.

FEELING

Festive

Sara Ward talks Christmas and shares her delicious celebration chocolate cake recipe

We love Christmas, it’s an opportunity to gather together all that is dear to us. Bringing nature from the outside into the home with trees and garlands, inviting friends together to celebrate as we remind ourselves of all that we are thankful for. The front room of our terrace house isn’t big enough for a Christmas tree, so with lights decorating the trees in the back garden, I make a long garland to drape over the fireplace using evergreens. Yew is soft and pliable to form a base secured with florist’s wire that can then be layered up with tendrils of ivy and sprigs of variegated laurels. I weave some vintage fairy lights throughout the length

8

and tie ribbons, orange slices and cinnamon sticks in clusters. Whilst a lot of our festivities are with close friends and family at home, we love to join in with larger community events that welcome all to celebrate this time of year. Outside our house is an old Victorian square and we help to organise Carols in the Park just days before Christmas to share mulled wine and mince pies with our neighbours as we sing along to a brass band whilst lights twinkle in the trees above us. We even have a mobile farm bring live animals to help us remember that first Christmas in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago.

Italian LIFE

AT 2 BEECHES AVENUE GASTROVINARIA

Vinoteca Italiana has been a staple in Carshalton Beeches for more than six years, offering authentic Italian cooking in a home from home setting. Now husband and wife team Gianni and Hana Quartulli are taking their recipe for success and applying it to their latest business venture – 2 Beeches Avenue, an Italian Gastrovinaria. They have taken over the adjoining premises to the restaurant and opened the Gastrovinaria, which is also the perfect spot for coffee and a pastry – when we say coffee, we mean only the best Italian coffee, rich and

intense, made with Napoli’s finest coffee beans – and to while away time enjoying the company of family and friends. Brunch is served from 10am and includes classics such as Egg Benedict and Egg Florentine, there is also a lunchtime menu featuring fresh, colourful salads, sandwiches, delectable Arancini – homemade stuffed rice balls filled with beef ragu – as well as heartier dishes. Come early evening visitors can feast on a platter of antipasto, a selection of Italian cured meats and cheeses, olives and rustic bread, which goes perfectly with a glass of wine.

The deli hosts regular events. Look out for details on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/2beechesavenue

ADVERTORIAL

Gianni and Hana embrace the philosophy that Italians live to eat, not eat to live, so the Gastrovinaria is a place of discovery with new and tasty treats to savour on the premises or to take away to enjoy at home. From the divine Sicilian pastries packed with pistachio, hazelnut or chocolate, to the cheese counter brimming with choices. Passionate about all things Italian cuisine, Gianni and Hana have sourced produce from across Italy. Their range of wines from around the world includes many small, regional producers not normally found on supermarket shelves, so 2 Beeches Avenue is worth a visit just to pore over the bottles lining the wall.

EPSOM & EWELL

Being a Carer AT CHRISTMAS

With the festive season just around the corner, many families start to make plans for the holidays. For those caring for an elderly friend or relative, this means a lot more than simply decorating the tree and wrapping presents – it requires careful thought and planning for family members that require extra support, particularly at this time of year. Short-term respite care in the run up to Christmas carries a number of benefits for you, your loved ones, and your

Top tips for carers this Christmas 1. D ecorate the house gradually – introduce the new environment slowly so it does not come as a surprise to your loved one. 2. R outine and tradition – keep Christmas simple and familiar to limit confusion. Keep activities low-key and do things that are familiar. 3. M ake sure they’re involved – from simple things like decorating the tree or preparing some veg, it’s important that your loved one feels included. 4. K eep the noise down – a challenge, particularly at Christmas, but those with dementia or confusion occasionally need quiet spaces to relax.

extended family. It offers an easy way to catch up on that ever-growing “to do” list and just a couple of days’ (or even hours’) break can give you the extra time needed to finish the shopping or organise the house. And whilst you are out and about amidst the rush, your loved one can receive all the assistance they need in a warm and friendly environment, so when it comes to the big day, everyone can relax and enjoy cherished time together. 5. Bring back old memories – sometimes a look through the family photo album or just putting out the same, familiar decorations can help those with dementia feel more comfortable. 6. Leave room on the plate – It’s easy to pile the plate up at Christmas, but for those with confusion or dementia, a lot of food can seem daunting... and remember, leftover food can always be eaten the next day. 7. Be flexible. No matter how much you plan, the effects of dementia in a family can have a huge impact at Christmas and things may look and feel different. Always have a plan B.

Christmas concerts at this 17th century home

The Surrey home of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams is opening it’s doors for two concerts this Christmas. An atmospheric house with panoramic views across the Surrey countryside, Leith Hill Place was the childhood home of one of England’s greatest composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, who gave it to the National Trust in 1945. Feel inspired as you walk around a place that has been the setting for so much creativity, whilst taking in lovely views.
