EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome elcome to the W autumn edition of Out &About magazine.

It doesn’t seem like that long since I last wrote the foreword for the last edition of Out&About magazine. The summer has flown by, and we’re heading into autumn. My local convenience store already has mince pies on the shelves, which seems a little early to me, but it is never too early to book your Christmas panto. In this edition we feature the Christmas shows on offer at the Epsom Playhouse. Oh yes we do! I do enjoy the autumn season though, long brisk walks over the Downs, followed by a tasty roast dinner in a local pub, makes my perfect Sunday.

But we also have Halloween and Guy Fawkes night just around the corner. I love spending time carving out a pumpkin and then making a creamy, mildly curried, pumpkin soup – a real winter-warmer! On pages 8&9 we have highlighted some of the great Halloween events and activities on offer. There is also a feature from Sutton Chamber of Commerce, including information on their Christmas lunch - raising money to buy Christmas presents for local children who wouldn’t otherwise be receiving anything from Santa. Anyone can attend, so get booking to enjoy a lovely lunch and support a good local cause. I hope you enjoy this edition of our magazine, and please do support our advertisers, without whom the magazine would not be possible.

Happy reading! Amanda

AN ARTIST AND A MUM TO 35 We talk to Gloria Shilling about her life as an artist and her special role

As a child, Gloria was often confined to bed and some of her earliest memories are of wondering when she would be able to join the other children playing outside.

‘It was as a teaching assistant that my love for all things artistic resurfaced as I was able to use my skills in art and run after-school clubs,’ she reveals.

‘I was a ‘sickly child’, or that was what they called it back then,’ she explains.

Encouraged by this re-awakening, Gloria started watercolour painting lessons with Lorna Murray, a well-known artist and teacher.

But sometimes out of adversity comes inspiration as her situation set her on the road to fulfilling her talent for art. ‘To alleviate the boredom of lying in bed for hours on end, I was given pencils and paper and a pack of cards. Thankfully both were easy to do in bed, and whilst I cannot claim to do card tricks like Dynamo, I took to drawing immediately and began to create drawings of beautiful women in fantastic evening dresses,’ she continues. Leaving school with ‘A’ levels in art and needlework Gloria was hoping to go to art college and, maybe, follow a career in fashion but, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. ‘I started temping during the summer holidays and suddenly I had my own money and with it a freedom I had never experienced before. Perhaps I should have set my small slice of the ‘Dulce Vita’ to one side but the thought of being a penniless student for the next three years suddenly didn’t appeal that much. Oh, what might have been!’ she adds. Office work and a spell in personnel followed and later, after having three children, she cross-trained and went into education.

‘Lorna became my mentor and suggested I joined Tadworth Art Group. Of course, I was delighted when this rather prestigious group accepted me but there was a surprise almost as soon as I had joined. Their secretary had just resigned and, when they discovered my background in admin and personnel, they asked if I would take on the job. Suddenly, I was mum to 35 people I hardly knew. Dishing out memos, organising their diary, conducting meetings and being the sounding board to all their hopes and worries. A baptism of fire, you might say, but I loved the involvement and I have now made lifelong friends,’ she enthuses. But even as an established and successful artist, Gloria still maintains that we never stop learning. ‘I still attend courses with many tutors always looking for new ideas and stimulation. I like exploring shade and form with a special leaning towards wildlife studies, striving to capture the texture of skin and fur but, as you would expect, I have never lost my love of drawing. And, of course, being a proud mum to 35,’ she concludes.

As an organisation committed to supporting business we try and stay apolitical, lobbying government only on issues that directly affect business. As you can imagine, at the moment we are being kept pretty busy! Irrespective of how you voted, the current tumult

over Brexit is having a massive impact on business. Consumer confidence has ebbed away and many businesses have scaled back or frozen all forms of recruitment and investment in new products or services. At the same time, our high streets are under considerable pressure – shoppers have high expectations of a quality visitor experience, yet retailers are facing higher rents, crippling business rates and intense competition from online retailers that benefit from lower overheads and favourable tax regimes. Whilst the temptation is to shop online and avoid our town centres, now is the time to keep faith with your local high street companies and shop local. The adage ‘use it or lose it’ has never resonated so profoundly.

I urge our politicians – local councillors and local MPs – to work together to support our business community through this unprecedented trading environment. Our high streets need investment, our businesses need support, and our politicians need to work together to end the Brexit uncertainty and support high street retailers. We are working with Chambers of Commerce across London to do what we can to support our local businesses, but businesses need customers. If you go shopping this weekend, please make an effort to visit a couple of shops you don’t usually visit and give them your support. David Duncan Chairman

SUTTON BUILDING PROGRAMME

Sutton

BUILDING PROGRAMME Sutton completes first council house building programme in 30 years.

57 new council flats in Alcester Road, Wallington - what Sutton Council calls “a tangible example of what we mean by Ambitious for Sutton.”

Shirley Cawley, Steve Tucker, Chief Executive of Sutton Housing Partnership and the Mayor and Mayoress of Sutton.

The London Borough of Sutton has completed its first programme of new council house building for 30 years. Sutton’s focus has been on building homes that not only offer high-quality accommodation but also enhance the local environment, as part of its Ambitious for Sutton programme, to make the borough a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Sutton’s new council homes are on three sites across the borough:

In total, Sutton has built 93 new homes – 15 houses were finished in October last year, and now 21 new houses and 57 new flats are ready for people to move in. This building programme was possible because of changes in financial regulations allowing councils to borrow to build council housing. The council also used money raised from right-to-buy sales, and the balance will be repaid from future rental income from the properties, which means that there is no impact on Council Tax.

• Richmond Green, Beddington 21 houses and completed in August 2019

Jayne McCoy, Deputy Leader of Sutton Council and Chair of the Housing, Economy & Business Committee, says, “Our key objective has been to focus on quality for these new homes, as we believe that all our residents deserve a good-quality place to live, improving their life chances, the local area and the wider urban environment.

Increasing the number of new homes means that more local families on our housing register will get a chance of an affordable new home.

“We are investing significantly in the future of the borough. These are first-class homes we are proud of and they rightly set a high design benchmark for the private developers we seek to attract.”

• Fellowes Road, Carshalton 15 houses completed in October 2018 • Alcester Road, Wallington 57 flats completed in August 2019

Fellowes Road is already fully occupied, and tenants are now moving into the remaining newly-completed properties. “We are determined to help our residents live well independently and to keep them safe,” says Cllr McCoy. “A settled, high quality, home improves well-being, the life chances of children, and residents’ job opportunities.

“This year marks 100 years of social housing. The housing crisis is particularly severe in London and our new programme of council house building recaptures the ambition of 100 years ago and is a tangible example of what we mean by Ambitious for Sutton.”
