Gardener’s NOTES

Alex Wigley, Polesden Lacey’s Gardens and Outdoors Manager, writes As we move into autumn, bulb ordering comes high up the agenda as many companies are offering their spring-flowering bulbs for sale. It is also the time for two of my favourites to flower; Colchicums and Nerines. Colchicums or ‘Naked Ladies’ are bulb-like corms. You’ll find them under the trees on the walnut lawn as you walk in the gardens from the visitor reception at Polesden Lacey. Their flowers, which appear before the leaves, resemble a large crocus with pink through purples to white blooms. They naturalise perfectly under trees where they will open year after year. The smaller Crocus, Crocus sativus or speciosus also produce bold displays of purple and white in Autumn. Nerines are along the herbaceous borders by the formal gardens and bloom throughout September

and October, sending up a spike with a cluster of flowers with colours ranging through pinks to red. Many species are tender and can be grown in pots and kept frost free over winter, but Nerine bowdenii can be grown outside in a warm sheltered location such as next to a wall. They come up year on year and make a great cut flower. September is the peak season for squashes in the garden with courgettes and summer squashes being harvested and pumpkins swelling. Keeping them well watered will avoid issues such as powdery mildew, and a high potash feed is needed for fruit production. As the nights turn colder in October, harvest before the first frost and bring pumpkins inside to ripen their skins so they can be stored frost free for Halloween and into the winter. IGNITE AT POLESDEN LACEY

Ignite

AT POLESDEN LACEY Fire and Light trail comes to Polesden Lacey this October and November

From 22 October – 7 November, visitors will have the chance to see Polesden Lacey like never before at the first-ever IGNITE experience. A new after-dark experience is coming to the Edwardian gardens at the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey this autumn. As twilight falls, the IGNITE magic begins. Expect the unexpected, with glimpses of fairies that could be dancing in lanterns, fiery fish and woodland wildlife sculpted in willow, as you stroll through an enchanting landscape. Lit by lanterns, wander between flickering flames and majestic trees – from one amazing space to another – on a quietly magical meander. Within this fiery interpretation of flora and fantasy, set to an atmospheric soundscape, there are moments of playful discovery and reflection.

The trail has been specially designed for visitors of all ages to enjoy. “We’re so excited to welcome visitors to Polesden Lacey for this enchanting trail this autumn. It is the first time we’ve hosted something like this at Polesden Lacey and we can’t wait to see the gardens illuminated in such a magical way,” said Katherine Mills, National Trust General Manager for Polesden Lacey. Book your tickets safe in the knowledge that if Covid-19 Government legislation requires cancellation, you can re-book your slot or get a refund.

EPSOM SALTS

EPSOM

Salt

A brief history

In the days before a medicine for almost any illness could be bought over the chemist’s counter, sources of mineral waters were respected for their healing qualities. The traditional story told how the healing powers of the waters were discovered in 1618 or thereabouts. A villager called Henry Wicker was looking after animals on Epsom Common in a dry summer, when there was a great want of water for cattle. He found a trickle of water in the hollow hoofprint of a cow, and dug a square hole about it before taking the animals home for the night. Returning the next day, with some difficulty he found the hole that he had made, and discovered that it was full and running over with clear water. But his cattle, however thirsty, would not drink from it and he soon realised that they were rejecting the water because of its mineral

24

taste. Wicker tried the water himself, and was the first person in history to experience the effects of Epsom salts. Enthusiastically, he set about promoting the waters as a medicine. Lord North, famous for the discovery of Tunbridge Wells, had great faith in a draught of Epsom water, taken first thing in the morning. He told the other courtiers about the place, appealing for the use of English waters because Spa in Belgium was too expensive; besides, going there meant spending money on foreigners. In fact Epsom Wells were starting to get an international reputation of their own, and the first recorded visit took place in 1629, when the

f @outandaboutmagazines

Dutch diplomat Abram Booth set out from London through Surrey on horseback ‘to see some Royal Castles and Ipson Wells’. He was told that the well had been made serviceable at the expense of the village. Having been told that the water purged without any effort, he and his friends drank a few glasses ‘with very good effect’. They found many people there, even sick persons from faraway places who had come to drink the water, which could also be taken away in bottles and jugs. Around 1699 a second well was sunk to the west of the town, on land owned by a Mr. Symonds. This was near the public house to the west of South Street, known since at least 1755 as the www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk

EPSOM SALTS Magpie but renamed Symonds Well in 1996. The discovery that water laden with Epsom salts could be found nearer the town inspired a local entrepreneur, John Livingstone. He was an apothecary who had recently moved into the town. He became a tithingman, an official appointed by the manor, in 1692. Four years later he was living in Church Street, in a house on the site of the present Grove Road. He must have been an enterprising man : when the Lady of the Manor, Elizabeth Evelyn, was granted a Royal Charter by James II for the right to hold a weekly market and two annual fairs in Epsom, Livingstone leased that right.

In 1695, chemists had established what gave Epsom’s water its medicinal quality, and Epsom Salts were soon cheaply available over their counters. This meant that there was no longer any need to go to the town for them, especially as the quantities of water from the two Epsom Wells were never large enough for manufacturing on any scale.

Epsom Salts are still sold, under that name, not just for the traditional purpose but as an ingredient for other useful medicaments. I was told that they were given to soldiers in their tea during the War: and they are included in some rose fertilisers. Knowledgeable people buy the unrefined form, which they can mix for themselves, for the health of their roses.

PUMPKIN PICKING

FIELDS OF

pumpkins At Garsons Farm

Pumpkins are no longer just for carving on Halloween, they represent Autumn and the change in seasons. Decorating your home with pumpkins, large and small, has become more popular over recent years, whether it’s a traditionally carved pumpkin sitting spookily in the window or smaller decorative ones placed in and out of your home, it certainly is a growing autumnal trend. Garsons Pick Your Own Farm is located at Winterdown Road, Esher, Surrey, KT10 8LS and has an abundance of pumpkins for you to discover and take home. When you arrive at the garden centre there are several signs which direct you into the pick your own fields. You drive through areas of other seasonal crops until you are directed towards the fields dedicated to growing pumpkins.

26

Wonder around the fields, taking time to choose your perfect pumpkin and then carry it to your car to pay at the exit. Each individual will need to have a Farm Pass, including children and infants. You will need to show upon arrival at the farm entrance gate and kiosk your Farm Pass booking with the order reference barcode number. All visitors are advised to drive through the Farm, stopping and parking up at each field as you drive around, for safety. Produce is charged per item or weighed (gross weight charged) at the exit till kiosks, whereupon your Farm Pass value will be deducted from the total bill, providing the produce is equal or of a higher value than the Farm Pass booking price.

History of the Halloween pumpkin It is said that the practice of carving ‘jack-o’-lanterns’ at Halloween dates back hundreds of years to Ireland. In those days they used potatoes and turnips but when Irish immigrants took this tradition with them to the US, they discovered pumpkins. Ghoulish faces carved on the pumpkins that were lit up with a flickering candle inside were thought to both ward off evil spirits and represent evil spirits. Today, they’re more of a sign to indicate to trick or treaters that you are open for business! Our own carvings are quite traditional (and leave a lot to be desired!), but there are some incredibly elaborate carvings out that you could try to copy. www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk

BACK TO SCHOOL

Ace the start of the

new school year with these tips

The new school term is just days away and already the summer holidays seem like a distant memory. Being prepared to go back to school – or in some cases starting school – is the key to making the transition as smooth and as easy as possible.

Here are some tips to help beat the back-to-school rush. Bedtime routine The longer summer evenings, hot weather and holidays all play havoc with bedtime routines, with children tending to stay up later and sleep in longer. Getting set bedtimes in place before school starts can help everyone adjust ahead of the morning alarm call on the first day back, plus sleep is vital if children are to concentrate in class. Healthy start Eating a healthy breakfast before the start of the school day has been shown to increase energy, improve concentration and set children up for the day ahead. Leave enough time for your child to sit down and eat in the morning and think about packing healthy snacks like fruit, dried fruits and granola bars to boost energy levels during the day. Get packing Avoid last-minute panics on the morning school run by organising as much as possible the night before. Make lunches, lay out uniforms, check PE kits and have school bags packed so that you don’t have to run around trying to find books or trainers.

30

Calendar We all lead busy lives, so keeping on top of school events, after-school activities and homework deadlines can be challenging. Having a family calendar can help keep everyone on track – you just need to remember to update it! Study time Have a designated area where children can sit and complete homework, minus electronic distractions like tablets, mobile phones and the television. Keep a supply of pens, colouring pencils, glue sticks and paper at home for homework tasks and if a computer is required, supervise younger children and set up online parental controls. Uniform Lost uniform is a daily hazard. Before the start of the new term, check that any items of uniform that you already have still contain name labels. Any new items should be labelled as well, including coats, bags, hats and shoes. Encourage your child to hang up their coats and jumpers and to take care of their belongings and talk to them about what to do if they lose something. First day If your child is starting reception or making the transition to a new school then it is good to do a practice run so you know your route in advance. If you’re using public transport, check timetables and leave plenty of time for your journey – better to arrive early and have time before the bell rings than arriving in a fluster. Be calm and keep smiling – even if you’re feeling the nerves – and that will help your child to feel calm, too.
