LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the June / July issue of Out & About. Have you noticed that the swifts are back? These extraordinary birds live most of their life on the wing but at this time of year they come home and look for their old nesting places. Catherine Day tells us why they need our help. Page 5 The summer is when things get arty in Chiswick. Not only do we have a fabulous arts festival celebrating its Golden Jubilee but painters, sculptors, potters, jewellers and textile artists across a patch of west London throw open their doors and invite the public in. Torin Douglas, one of the long-time organisers of the Bedford Park Festival, gives us a flavour of what’s in the twoweek festival programme this year. Page 12 Marking the beginning of the festival is Green Days, a huge two-day summer fete on the common opposite Turnham Green tube station. On 11th June some lucky winner will be told that they are the owner of a signed print of Sir Peter Blake’s specially commissioned new work, a collage of the Chiswick Empire and the music hall artists who performed there, echoing his Sgt Pepper album cover for the Beatles. Karen Liebreich explains the competition and the background to why the new art work was commissioned, for a mural to brighten up a particularly dingy railway bridge. Page 13

map of where they all are and create your own personalised art trail. Page 14 Super Saturday of Sport is not quite as established as the arts festival or the open studios, but now in its fifth year, it is a firm fixture in the calendar. Kirsten Lonsdale tell us why she is on a mission to give everyone the chance to try out a new activity for free. Page 28 And if all that isn’t enough to keep you busy as bees, go and see the real bees at Hen Corner. A hive of honey bees, that’s what busy really looks like. Page 6 Hope you have a lovely summer.

THE SOUND OF IN OUR SKIES

Summer

Catherine Day, RSPB Swift Volunteer, has been searching the skies and listening out for high pitched screeching Image: Jon Perry

For the last month our local swifts have been arriving back from Africa. These small migratory birds, which have a wingspan about 7 or 8 cm longer than a blackbird but are about half the weight, make an astonishing 14,000-mile round trip from central Africa every year to nest here. Swifts live a unique aerial existence, feeding, drinking and sleeping entirely on the wing except when at the nest site. They make the journey here to nest in small spaces hidden under our eaves or in other high-up nooks and crannies in our buildings. We can therefore can truly say that, although they are absent on their non-stop travels for nine months of the year, home is here — our homes are their homes.

Image: Alain Georgy Nesting spaces under threat

All is not well though, as, worryingly, these unique birds are now Amber-listed in the UK as Birds of Conservation Concern. In London we have lost half our swift population in just the last 15 years. Many people in west London will have noticed that

L@outandabout_mag

their amazing aerobatics and the ‘sound of summer’ that they bring to our skies are missing. One of the main reasons that swifts are returning to find themselves homeless is that we are unwittingly removing or blocking up their decades-old nesting sites through our roof repairs and loft conversions. In addition, today’s new building methods and new building material means that our extensions and new buildings provide no hidden crannies at all for them.

Catherine will be talking about the Chiswick Swift Project on Sunday 18 June at 12.00pm in St Michael and All Angels Parish Hall, Bath Rd, Chiswick W4 1TT. Admission free.

Call to action — Give a swift a home

These incredible birds are the world’s fastest bird in level flight. The thrill of watching these ‘mini-red arrows’ of the avian world is something that we could all share again very easily. All that is needed is to provide them with new homes by putting up swift nest boxes or including ‘swift bricks’ (virtually invisible nest boxes made to look like bricks) when doing building works. For details of swift nest boxes and swift bricks, have a look at the website

Image: Inger Lund

swift-conservation.org

Also, if you see amazingly animated and fast flying displays of two or more swifts just above roof-top level or close around buildings, please report your sightings on the 2017 RSPB Swift Survey. This will help us know where in Brentford and Isleworth we still have our own swifts.

HEN CORNER Sara Ward is busy as a bee Summer is bee time for us. Our busy honey bees are working long and hard making the most of the extra light of the longer days. Summer bees only live for 6 weeks and literally work themselves to death, whereas winter bees live slower longer lives for the full 6 months from September to March. If you ever get the chance to watch lots of bees around a flowering shrub this time of year it’s a delight to see them systematically working every flower sucking up the nectar and packing pollen into tiny baskets on their legs. In the hive the queen bee, the mother of the colony, will spend her days and nights laying eggs (up to 2,000 a day) that will hatch into larvae before the pupation stage that releases a fully grown adult bee. The worker bees, all girls, will care for the queen and her brood, supplying food and removing waste. Their other jobs include cleaning the hive, guarding it, making wax cells for new eggs and processing the precious honey.

allergy battles. We are very proud of our honey made by the bees here at Hen Corner and are also delighted to partner with local award-winning bee keepers to offer a range of local honey. If you’d like to explore bee keeping for yourself, we have our courses, Full Day Bee Keeping (13th June, 19th July) and Bees for Children (27th July).

Honey bees only explore outside the hive for the last two weeks of their lives, when they’ve earned their opportunity to forage. In their entire life will be responsible for producing just 1/12th teaspoon of honey. It’s definitely a teamwork thing, in the height of summer a hive can be home to around 60,000 bees. Many people find that a little bit of local honey a day can help build up tolerance to the pollens responsible for seasonal allergies and choosing honey from the bees who forage where you sneeze is the most delicious way to arm yourself in the

at home MEET THE ARTISTS Open studios in west London By Bridget Osborne

Steph Curtis-Raleigh – Painting - Studio 27

If you’re at all interested in art and you live in West London, one of the nicest things to do in the summer is to spend a happy weekend wandering around, visiting artists in their homes and looking at their work. Within three square miles, between Brook Green and Strand On The Green, Uxbridge Road and the Thames, there is a surprising diversity of artists. 74 of them — painters, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, print-makers, textile and fashion designers and glassworkers — open

wide their doors for the annual open studio scheme, Artists at Home on 16–18 June. Some show alone, some with one or two others; altogether there are 57 studios. They publish a brightly coloured little booklet which contains the full list of artists and studios and a map of where they all are. If it doesn’t pop through your letter-box it can be picked up from shops, libraries and other such public places throughout the area, or from the principal sponsor John D Wood & Co. in Turnham Green Terrace in Chiswick. Or you can go to the website www.artistsathome.net where you can find several examples of each artist’s work. This should help you narrow the field of interest and personalise your very own art trail.

artists’ studios with floor to ceiling windows fronting the river along Chiswick Mall to a passing replica of the interior of a Bavarian castle in Shepherd’s Bush. (Wilfred Brambell would be rolling in his grave!) Usually they will offer tea or wine. I have been offered freshly homemade lemonade. The idea of course is that you buy something but there’s never any pressure and if you do make a purchase you can be sure you’ll be paying less than you would in a gallery.

It is highly unlikely you’ll manage them all, (believe me I’ve tried) but there is always next year. It’s invariably the third weekend in June. I love meeting the artists in their natural habitat as it were, talking to them about what they do, learning about their process, how and when they first began, and, to be honest, seeing inside their homes, which range from specially designed

Father's Day is on Sunday 18th June. Don’t think of this as a clash of events; see it as a happy coincidence and an opportunity to buy an original gift whether it’s a hand-thrown ceramic bowl for under £20 or a major work for thousands, or a wide range of prices and disciplines in between. THE CHISWICK TIMELINE — A HISTORY IN ART AND MAPS

Karen Liebreich on Abundance London’s big plans Karen Liebreich on Abundance London’s big plans The project has been made financially possible by generous backing from the London Borough of Hounslow, Ealing Council and Fuller’s Brewery, as well as support from many of the best local businesses and Sanderson wallpaper, which used to be based in Chiswick. When the cost of the project unexpectedly doubled, enthusiastic individuals stepped in and topped up the budget. Map by Willilam Knight, 1700

Abundance London, a small voluntary organisation, is working on a huge and striking mural, The Chiswick Timeline, to be installed under the railway arches outside Turnham Green tube station. Created in vitreous enamel, the artwork will represent the Chiswick loop of the River Thames in a series of maps from 1593 to the current day. Set into these maps will be works of art by local artists of Chiswick landmarks.

L@outandabout_mag

Original art work by Sir Peter Blake and Jan Pienkowski

Local artists Sir Peter Blake and Jan Pieńkowski have created original pieces to go on the mural. Sir Peter has made a collage of performers at the Chiswick Empire, a famous music hall which used to stand on the High Road, in the style of his Sergeant Pepper album cover (50 years ago today!) Jan Pieńkowski, two-times winner of the Kate Greenaway medal for children’s illustration and much-loved illustrator of Meg & Mog books, depicts the Russian Orthodox cathedral in his customary magical silhouette style.

They join world class artists such as William Hogarth, Eric Ravilious, Johann Zoffany, Julian Trevelyan, Camille Pissarro on the walls of the railway bridge. Competition to win Sir Peter Blake numbered print

Sir Peter produced 100 signed prints, which sold out within 48 hours and crashed the Abundance London website but we’ve held one back for a competition. You have until 10 June to enter on our website chiswicktimeline.org. If you can name 35 of the performers correctly you will be entered for the prize draw on Saturday 11th June. The mural installation is scheduled for October, so everyone else will be able to see it then we hope, although Abundance has found that pulling together a project of this complexity always takes longer than expected! But the aim is that this richly detailed work of art will become a major landmark in the area.

JOCKEY CLUB LIVE

The X Factor

Pop’s self-styled cheeky chappie Olly Murs is back with a new album and a series of summer gigs. Since his big break on The X Factor, Olly Murs has gone on to score a string of number one singles and four multiplatinum selling albums, including his latest chart-topping album, 24 Hrs. We chatted to the singer ahead of his appearance at Sandown Park racecourse this August. Your new album 24 Hrs is your fourth consecutive number one album. That must be a great feeling?

“Amazing. I’m very proud of that, you know to have four consecutive number one albums is brilliant. I never expected in my wildest dreams that I would’ve got this far, so absolutely delighted." You mention this is your most honest album to date, do you feel you are constantly progressing as an artist and songwriter through your albums?

“Yes, 50/50. I wanted to do something different and I felt with this album I just didn’t know where to go next. I felt writing about what’s been actually, genuinely happening was the right thing to do. I’m just really happy that I did this album and the fact that it went to number one and people really like it.” Is there a particular track on this album that you’re most proud of and that you really want people to hear?

I think 24 Hrs and Flaws are the two songs on the album that I’m really proud of. For me 24 Hrs, the song was something I’ve never done before, both production-wise and the feel of the song. ‘Flaws’ I feel is one of the best songs that I’ve written with the guys. It was really sad but I think you have to listen to the songs to kinda get the idea of what I mean. I love writing really happy feel-good songs but at the same time it’s nice to show people a different side to me and show some emotion and that’s what this album was about.” In the summer you’ve got a huge run of outdoor shows that will see you come to Sandown Park on August 10

“It’s really fun being outside and the show that we’re doing at Sandown Park is a different gig for me, I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve done racecourse gigs in the past, but not this sort of size. I’m really proud to do it and it gives me the chance to go to different places in the UK that I haven’t been before. I can’t wait, I mean, what’s better? Go to a racecourse, I can go there during the day, I can have a little flutter on a couple of the races and then do a gig in the evening. Perfect.” To read the full interview and win tickets to see Olly Murs visit our Facebook page

SATURDAY OF SPORT 2017

Kirsten Lonsdale, organiser of Super Saturday, is determined that we should all try some new activity this summer Images: Kelly Reeves

West London’s biggest celebration of activity, Super Saturday of Sport, is back again.

The free event for all ages will take over Turnham Green in Chiswick on July 8th to showcase the best of the area’s local sports clubs and help inspire everyone to find an active passion. The event last year attracted more than 8,000 people from far and wide and the support of local resident Clare Balding MBE, who opened the day with a mascot race. What’s new this year?

Each year I try and introduce new features to make it interesting and offer something that is genuinely accessible — and fun — for all ages and fitness levels. For the first time this year we are introducing a mini Family Fun run to start the event at 11.00am, with all participants receiving a medal for taking part. You need to register beforehand on our website www.supersaturdayofsport.co.uk to make sure we have enough prizes! A new sport, ‘Wild Slyde’ will have families simulate swimming races on the green plus a local circus skills company will offer sessions to budding acrobats. Super Saturday of Sport regulars are returning: Sebastien Foucan’s Freerunning Academy, Chiswick Rugby club, the London Hornets American Football team and Brentford Football Club Community Sports Trust. Yoga Muni will take care of the mental health aspect in the chill out zone by leading mindfulness, meditation and of course yoga.

Getting bigger and better each year

Now in its 5th year, we’ve been able to keep Super Saturday of Sport free to all because of the generous support of the West London business community including The Park Club, Club Des Sport, Borthwicks Estate Agent and Chiswick eyewear company, Maverick & Wolf. Without the backing of the local businesses and sports clubs, this event couldn’t happen. I am so indebted to them because I can’t change my commitment that Super Saturday has to be free for all. There are not many truly inclusive family days out for free anymore, so I’ll fight hard to preserve this one.

HOUNSLOW CHAMBER

MEMBER NEWS Lighting up Hounslow

Rob Gillespie, Service Director, Hounslow Highways It will not have gone unnoticed that the night-time lighting of Hounslow has changed over the last few years. As part of Hounslow Highways investment programme in all aspects of the streets in the borough, the street lighting has received significant attention. To explain a little of the background to this, Hounslow Highways is the service provider working on behalf of the London Borough of Hounslow, responsible for maintaining the roads, pavements and street lighting across the borough, as well as providing a number of other key services including street cleansing. When we entered into the contract with the London Borough of Hounslow we promised to improve the lighting and to deliver savings both in energy cost and environmental impact — carbon emissions. Cheaper, better, brighter, safer

So far we have installed 14,483 new LED street lights and we are now getting close to finishing the street lighting renewal programme. LED (light emitting diode) lighting is a more cost-effective and carbon-reducing solution for domestic, internal and external lighting. In addition to the cost and carbon savings, it has been shown that white LED lighting helps crime detection and reduces the fear of crime. This type of lighting allows much more detailed levels of object and facial definition and gives much clearer CCTV images that help the police identify criminals. In the early months of the installation Hounslow Highways worked with the local Hounslow police team to prioritise crime areas for early conversion, to make the difference more quickly.

The CMS also allows close recording of energy use through the street lighting and allows the Council and Hounslow Highways to control light levels individually, by street or across the whole borough, if required. So if you happen to have a street lamp outside your bedroom window and you find it a little too bright, we can do something about it. This is part of the future-proofing of the street lighting, allowing the 16,000 lights to perhaps be adjusted in the future as local needs change or the roads are reconfigured as part of improvements. The new street lighting in the Borough is delivering on its promises. The amount of energy used in lighting our streets to the right standard is significantly reduced and along with that comes significant carbon reduction. Repairs and maintenance are carried out more quickly because faultfinding is automated and fast, and the overall lighting levels of the Hounslow streets are meeting the expectations of the police and other authorities — delivering better streets.

High tec problem solving

In addition to this new lighting technology, the street lights in Hounslow are all now individually controllable from Hounslow Highways central operations hub in Jubilee House in Depot Road. The CMS (control and monitoring system) allows the operations team to see problems on the street lighting immediately through computer systems linking each street light by Wi-Fi. If a light goes out or starts to operate abnormally a message is recorded in the system and Hounslow Highways engineers can be dispatched to rectify the problem. It also reports when electricity supplies are interrupted allowing the team to work quickly with the electricity provider in the borough to solve the problem.

MEMBER NEWS Brentford firm Octink plays host to Theresa May and launches new online tool Print Guardian aimed at the construction industry Theresa May paid a visit to Brentford firm Octink in May. As one of the most marginal seats, Brentford and Isleworth was a key target for the Conservatives during the election campaign and the constituency was flooded with senior politicians. Amber Rudd, Andrea Leadsom, Damian Green, Justine Greening, John Redwood and Priti Patel all dropped in, supporting their candidate Mary Macleod. The Prime Minister stayed longer than most and held a press conference in Octink’s warehouse with the retinue of journalists who travelled with her on the campaign. You may have seen it fleetingly on the BBC’s Ten o’clock News bulletin. Octink’s CEO Will Tyler said: “It was an honour to welcome the Prime Minister to our offices in Brentford. Theresa May was very happy to talk to our staff, who were delighted to be given the chance to speak to her about a number of issues, such as apprenticeships and the importance of family-owned businesses to the economy. For everyone involved, it was an unforgettable experience. From an Octink perspective, we drew confidence from Theresa May’s commitment to keep the interests of all SMEs firmly on her agenda.” A new tool for the construction industry

Octink is an award-winning producer of signage, graphics and decorated interiors, delivering innovative display and branding solutions for clients in the retail, live event, leisure, property and construction sectors. They have just launched a new product, Print Guardian, an interactive sales and marketing tool, which enables businesses to set up and use a bespoke portal for ordering standard and customised signage for their sites. The platform offers customisable tools and proofing features, and can be accessed 24/7 from most devices including mobiles, tablets, laptops and desktop machines, offering delivery of signage orders from within 24hrs up to three days.

Print Guardian enables businesses to order signage for their sites 24/7 from most devices

control their corporate identity and brand. Having a portal like this gives businesses control over how their logos and branding appears on their signage. “We have launched this product for the construction industry, with five sites already up and running,” says MD Mike Freely. “While Print Guardian is particularly suited to this sector, we have plans to introduce the platform also to other industries that could benefit from its features, such as retail and exhibitions.”

Octink’s clients have a lot of standardised signage and graphics, which can traditionally be quite an unwieldy process to order and deliver. As a result, Print Guardian functions as a webstore solution that works brilliantly for those that have standard products and those who wish to

MEMBER NEWS Claire Ireland – creator of Brentford’s Pocohontas plaque, talks about her work This year is the 400th anniversary of the death of Pocohontas, the Native American from Virginia who has been celebrated in books and art works and portrayed most famously in the Disney film, for saving the English settler John Smith from death at the hands of her tribe. Whether true or not, she had an extraordinary life, marrying Englishman John Rolfe, coming with him to England and being presented at court in an attempt to drum up investment in the Virginian tobacco settlement. She died at the very young age of 21, at the beginning of a journey back to the New World, but while in England she and her husband lived for a while in Brentford and to commemorate her life local artist and ceramic sculptor Claire Ireland was commissioned to create a plaque, now on the wall of Syon Park. “I wanted to evoke a transient moment - an echo of the person and the place. A fleeting point of time, held in the here and now - a remembrance for someone who died so young and left such a strong impression” said Claire. The plaque shows the young woman with a headdress of feathers. “My research has always involved collecting found objects, which have a personal and intrinsic value to me. I do love the notion that feathers are a gift from the sky. There is a pair of Peregrine Falcons nesting high above my studio —

32

so swift and agile in flight — so the feathers keep coming. They symbolise strong virtues in so many cultures across the world.” Claire used Portland stone for its strength but also because she felt it was in keeping with the surroundings, complementing the materials used on the Syon Park estate. Claire Ireland produces hand-built sculptural ceramics and uses a variety of experimental firing techniques. She creates work ranging from small creatures to large-scale pieces for courtyard gardens, outdoor locations and contemporary living spaces.
