The fair will take place in the grounds of Glyn House, Ewell Castle School, from 10am to 4pm on July 15. www.facebook.com/ewellvillagefair

Tickets £15, concessions £7.50. Epsom Choral Society Summer Concert, June 10, 7.30pm, St Andrew’s United Reformed Church, Northey Avenue, Cheam, www.epsomchoral.org.uk

Iconic 80s band Culture Club will be performing a handful of UK dates and stop off at Epsom Racecourse this July. We have teamed up with Jockey Club Live to run a competition where you could win tickets to the gig. Turn to pg 6 for all the details. Always wanted to experience the sights, sounds and flavours of Thailand? You can do just that, without venturing too far afield, as Epsom Thai Festival returns. Featuring Thai boxers, traditional music and dance as well as a special cabaret-style show by glamorous ladyboys. We also chat to Tom Early, founder of Ashtead Jazz Club, as it gears up to celebrate its fifth birthday. And speaking of birthdays, join Age Concern Epsom & Ewell as it marks a milestone in its history – 70 years of helping older people in our community – with its Golden Days festival. Plus we look ahead to the launch of the 2017 Epsom & Ewell Business Awards. Have a great summer.

JOCKEY CLUB LIVE
The X Factor
Pop’s self-styled cheeky chappie Olly Murs is back with a new album and a series of summer gigs. Since his big break on The X Factor, Olly Murs has gone on to score a string of number one singles and four multiplatinum selling albums, including his latest chart-topping album, 24 Hrs. We chatted to the singer ahead of his appearance at Sandown Park racecourse this August. Your new album 24 Hrs is your fourth consecutive number one album. That must be a great feeling?
“Amazing. I’m very proud of that, you know to have four consecutive number one albums is brilliant. I never expected in my wildest dreams that I would’ve got this far, so absolutely delighted." You mention this is your most honest album to date, do you feel you are constantly progressing as an artist and songwriter through your albums?
“Yes, 50/50. I wanted to do something different and I felt with this album I just didn’t know where to go next. I felt writing about what’s been actually, genuinely happening was the right thing to do. I’m just really happy that I did this album and the fact that it went to number one and people really like it.” Is there a particular track on this album that you’re most proud of and that you really want people to hear?
I think 24 Hrs and Flaws are the two songs on the album that I’m really proud of. For me 24 Hrs, the song was something I’ve never done before, both production-wise and the feel of the song. ‘Flaws’ I feel is one of the best songs that I’ve written with the guys. It was really sad but I think you have to listen to the songs to kinda get the idea of what I mean. I love writing really happy feel-good songs but at the same time it’s nice to show people a different side to me and show some emotion and that’s what this album was about.” In the summer you’ve got a huge run of outdoor shows that will see you come to Sandown Park on August 10
“It’s really fun being outside and the show that we’re doing at Sandown Park is a different gig for me, I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve done racecourse gigs in the past, but not this sort of size. I’m really proud to do it and it gives me the chance to go to different places in the UK that I haven’t been before. I can’t wait, I mean, what’s better? Go to a racecourse, I can go there during the day, I can have a little flutter on a couple of the races and then do a gig in the evening. Perfect.” To read the full interview and win tickets to see Olly Murs visit our Facebook page

GOLDEN DAYS FESTIVAL
GOLDEN DAYS Nostalgic trip through the decades as charity marks 70th anniversary There will be a hint of nostalgia in the air as an Epsom charity marks a major milestone in its history.
something to appeal to all ages.
To mark its 70th birthday Age Concern Epsom & Ewell is organising a good old-fashioned knees-up.
The charity has secured lottery funding to stage the festival on July 2 and is also being supported by a number of Epsom businesses.
The Golden Days Festival will celebrate music through the decades from 1940s big bands to 60s jazz, disco and pop. Featured acts include The Cadettes vintage vocal trio and Surrey Jazz, a brass quintet who are set to perform a 60s inspired set. Surrey Jive, quarter finalists of the Sky dance competition Got to Dance, will be showing off their flicks and kicks with a fast and furious 1950s rock ’n’ roll jive. And comedian Rachel Sambrooks will bring her show, Stand by your Nan, to the storytelling tent. Nonsuch Park will provide the backdrop for the festival, which will feature vintage cars and buses, including a chance to hail a ride on an original 1960s green double decker bus, a dog show, games, cream teas, food and craft stalls, with

There will also be a chance to win a family hamper. Bring four generations of family to the festival and have your photo taken to be entered into a prize draw. Call for volunteers

CAFE CULTURE Epsom Square to be leisure hub at heart of community A once-overlooked town square has been given a new lease of life in a bid to boost business and encourage residents to use the community space.
haven’t visited for some time. They might be surprised at the range of lifestyle activities on offer — from pilates and children’s soft play, to children’s fun hair salon and Epsom Library with its community shop run by volunteers.” Centre manager Steve Lucas said: “We want Epsom Square to be the top leisure spot of the town — somewhere people can relax away from the busy High Street. This should be a space for everyone and the first port of call for any choirs, charity activities or community events.”
Epsom Square — formerly known as Derby Square, Oaks Square and The Ebbisham Centre — has undergone a makeover following investment from private owner Burlywood Properties.
Last summer the square hosted a live music stage for Epsom & Ewell’s first MGSO4 Arts Festival. Mr Lucas added: “The MGSO4 Festival was fantastic. Everyone had a great time, and it really showed the potential of the place. But we want Epsom Square to feel like a celebration all year round.”
The outdoor plaza now has an inviting feel, with seating and a giant umbrella providing shade and shelter from the elements.
The plaza was officially launched at a community celebration last month with live music and free family entertainment.
Everest Spice, El Patio and Il Grande, which feature in Trip Advisor’s Top 10 places to eat in Epsom, are all based at the plaza and the choice of eateries has been boosted by the arrival of Il Grande Pizzeria and Dia y Noche, which will open this summer. Indoors a dedicated art space has been created where amateur and professional artists can hire hanging space to sell or showcase their work.

EPSOM THAI FESTIVAL
THAI FLAVOUR Celebration of Thai culture returns to Epsom Experience the sights, sounds, colours and flavours of Thailand at a one-day festival in Epsom this July. Thai boxers, colourful ladyboys, traditional dancers and musicians are set to perform at the annual celebration of all things Thai. A street market held in Epsom last month provided a taster of what was to come at this year’s festival at Hook Road Arena. Visitors will be able to watch demonstrations of Muay Thai, the ancient art of Thai boxing, as well as enjoy world class dance performers. Flamboyant ladyboys, famous in Thai culture, will entertain with a cabaret-style show and musicians will play Loog Thung, traditional Thai country music. Festivalgoers can sample authentic Thai food, browse stalls selling crafts and gifts or unwind with a Thai massage or spa. A prize draw to win a return flight to Bangkok will also be taking place on the day. Advance tickets can be bought online at a reduced price of £3, children under 10 are free. Epsom Thai Festival, July 9, 10am-6pm, Hook Road Arena, junction of Chessington Road and Hook Road, Epsom, KT19 8QG.

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: ASHTEAD
Based in the heart of The Street, Ceramica Tiles Ashtead is the perfect choice for stunning wall and floor tiles. Working alongside home owners, builders, developers, architects and designers from across Surrey to create beautifully inspired tiled areas. We caught up with director, Darren Sheen, to talk all things Mosaic... As well as being beautiful, mosaics are very practical. Depending on the material, they can be easily applied to flat and curved surfaces. They can be used for walls in bathrooms, wetrooms, kitchens — and some are suitable for floors too!! Mosaics have been used to decorate buildings for thousands of years and the Greeks and Romans made them into an art form, creating highly intricate images from tiny pieces of stone (tesserae), mainly for their floors. Mosaics are still an incredibly popular way of covering walls and floors today in homes, commercial buildings and for swimming pools too. The format hasn’t changed much over the centuries either, although modern mosaics are now every easy and quick to apply. Mosaics are probably the most versatile of all tiling formats: small pieces of glass, stone, shell, ceramic, porcelain and metal are all held together on the reverse side, usually by a mesh backing. Mosaic sheets can be fixed in the same way as ceramic or porcelain tiles with adhesive and grout. Please speak to one of our team regarding fixing. When you are looking for something a little different for your next project you’ll find plenty of choice in our Mosaics ranges, whether it’s a mosaic for a border or a feature panel, for a splashback or as a backdrop. We have a huge range of colours and materials to choose from too: Glass mosaics; available in clear gloss colours, gold fleck, iridescent, mixed and tumbled effects. Natural materials of stone, shell and metal are very popular and fit in beautifully with current interior trends. More unusual materials, such as recycled wood, coconut, bamboo and copper are all available if you are looking for something completely out of the ordinary. If you would like to discuss these design ideas, or any others you might have, with the team at Ceramica Tiles Ashtead, please pop into the showroom or give us a call to book a design appointment.

HEALTH AWARENESS
THE POWER OF LIGHT
Each light has a different effect on the skin. Red LED light helps rejuvenate the skin by boosting the production of collagen and elastin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and evening skin tone.
UNLOCK THE SECRETS OF REJUVENATED SKIN WITH NONINVASIVE LED LIGHT THERAPY
Blue LED light targets the bacteria that causes acne, reducing the appearance of spots and helping to prevent future breakouts. It is also effective on skin conditions like psoriasis and ec-zema. The clear infrared light can be used to reduce skin pigmentation as well as helping heal the skin and reduce pain and inflammation.
It was scientists from NASA who first struck upon the idea of harnessing the power of light to treat skin conditions.
The award-winning Dermalux system can combine all three wavelength treatments to target multiple concerns in one session.
They had been using LED – light-emitting diode – lights to help grow plants in space and discovered that when red LED lights shone on astronauts, wounds started to heal more quickly.
Khadra says while the benefits can be seen after one or two sessions, for long-term results a course of treatment is required.
Research revealed that LED light works on a cellular level. Wavelengths of light stimulate skin cells, increasing the rate of cellular renewal and repair and fuelling the manufacture of collagen and elastin. Khadra McVay, a qualified acupuncturist and Dermalux therapist, at the Chiltern Health Centre in Sutton, says LED light therapy is becoming increasingly popular as people seek more natural, non-invasive skin treatments. She said: “It is also really calming. Most of the time people fall asleep under the light. It can help promote well-being and can be used to counter seasonal affective disorder.” How does it work?
LED lights come in different spectrums, including red, blue and infrared. Exposure to controlled therapeutic levels of LED lights, which contain no harmful UV, has been shown to be beneficial.
18
She also offers Medical Micro-derabrasion and Dermaroller therapy along with Cosmetic Acupuncture as part of a wider clinical treatment. A full consultation is taken prior to any treatment. Khadra takes a holistic approach and will look at lifestyle factors, such as diet, hydration, work stresses and environmental conditions, as well as taking any medical history into consideration before suggesting treatment. “A big part of acupuncture is that we teach patients to listen to their body and to think about what they are doing with their face. We forget how to relax and that often shows on our faces.” Specific acupuncture points on the body tailored to your physical and emotional health needs are worked on as well as the face.

THE HORTICULTURAL BAD BACK: PULL YOUR WEEDS, NOT YOUR BACK, AND WATCH YOUR GARDEN GROW
Spring is finally here, the leaves are shooting, the bulbs are sprouting and many people are spending more time outside getting their gardens ready for summer. Gardening can provide a great workout, but with all the bending, twisting and pulling, take time to prepare your body for strenuous exercise of the garden variety. Raking leaves, planting, digging and putting out the garden furniture are common reasons why many people come to see a chiropractor or an osteopath. To help avoid this type of back injury, here are just a few useful tips: • Warm-up before starting your gardening by gently stretching your muscles and moving your joints. • Try and reduce the need to bend down. Raised flowerbeds can provide great relief for chronic back pain sufferers and wearing a tool belt to hold your secateurs is not only time saving but has less stress on the spine. • Greenhouse workbenches should be built to the correct height about 2-4 inches below your elbow. • Avoid staying in one position for too long and take plenty of breaks. • Use a wheelbarrow to lift heavy objects and if you are pulling up weeds or shrubs, keep your back straight, take the strain with your legs and pull your tummy muscles in. • Don’t use heavy watering cans – only fill it half way. Alternatively, use a hose reel or an automatic irrigation system.

• Don’t over-reach. Use tools with long or extendable handles to avoid your need to stretch. • Don’t over dig and spend hours raking leaves or lawns! Over-enthusiastic digging or raking by unprepared out of condition gardeners accounts for a high number of ‘horticultural bad backs’. • Get fit to garden! See a chiropractor or osteopath to have your spine checked and imbalances corrected before problems occur. To help you through the gardening season, the Chiltern Health Centre (Sutton Chiropractic Clinic) is offering a consultation, physical examination including a bone density scan and X-rays (if required) or a treatment for only £40. This offer is valid until 16th June 2017, so call now to book an appointment with one of our chiropractors or osteopaths. Not to be used in conjunction with any other offers. SCHOOLS
LEARNING THE It is child’s play at Lingotot
Lingo
You are never too young to learn a language. In fact, research indicates that pre-school children are more receptive to picking up and learning foreign languages, says Sarah Lester, who runs weekly classes in Cheam. “Research suggests that by the age of three if children are starting to learn a language they just retain so much more, they absorb it.
“We learn through a lot of games, songs, a lot of movement and repetition. It’s very interactive.
Image: Shutterstock
“The whole idea of Lingotot is that children learn words that are really useful in day-to-day life so we have booklets so parents can reinforce the lesson throughout the week.”
“They have no inhibitions, they just go for it.” As a result, Sarah says their pronunciation is better, as younger children will tend to mimic what they hear.
Part of the 45-minute lesson is dedicated to a craft activity based on the theme of that week’s class. The activity is instructed in the language and the children get to take home their work to remind them of what they have learned. “The children amaze me with how quickly they pick up the language and how much they are learning.”
A former head of department and French and German teacher at secondary level, Sarah firmly believes that 11 is too old to start learning a language.
Sarah runs classes during term time and is also looking to hold classes over the summer holidays. To find out more, visit www.facebook.com/LingototSutton
“As a language lover, I didn’t start languages until I was 11 in year 7, but the more I do this, and working with primary schools as well, I believe the more experience and exposure children have to languages before they get to secondary school the better.
www.lingotot.com
“At 11 children are far less receptive, they are very reluctant to speak.” Sarah set up her Lingotot franchise a little over a year ago and juggles classes around caring for her two children, aged four and two. She runs French classes on Thursdays, suitable for toddlers and pre-school children, and French and German afterschool classes on Fridays in Cheam, as well as working at a local primary school for a day-and-a-half a week.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT PUTTING A POWER OF ATTORNEY IN PLACE? Katherine Carroll gives us reasons why a Power of Attorney is important
Katherine Carroll heads up the newly opened Epsom office of Peacock & Co Solicitors. Peacock & Co have been established in Wimbledon since 1991 and opened in Epsom in May 2017. Katherine is a partner at the firm and specialises in Wills, trusts, powers of attorney, estate administration and Court of Protection matters. She has over 18 years' experience in this area, advising clients in relation to their estate planning affairs. Katherine prides herself on providing practical and clear advice in a friendly and approachable way. Katherine is also a member of Solicitors for the Elderly and the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners. When putting your affairs in order, we think about making a Will which deals with matters after we have gone but often overlook the help you might need in lifetime, i.e. through a power of attorney.
22
There are different sorts of powers of attorney – general powers are usually for the short term (if you are working abroad say) but are only valid if you have mental capacity. For a more long term solution a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is the answer. Prior to October 2007, they were called Enduring Powers of Attorney. Those created are still in effect, although an LPA can be more comprehensive. The benefit of an LPA is that you are appointing someone you choose and trust to manage your affairs in your lifetime should you not be able to yourself. This might be because you have lost mental capacity (you have dementia, say) or physical capacity either to get out or sign your name (you have had a stroke, say). It does sound a bit doom and gloom but without an LPA, then your family member will have to apply to the Court of Protection for authority to act, this can take 4-6 months and most importantly you have no control over who makes that application. There are two types of LPAs – one to cover property and finance decisions and one to cover health and welfare decisions. You can set out in the LPA whether you want one or more attorneys, have some substitutes and also decide how your attorneys will make decisions for you and when.
L@outandabout_mag
www.outandabout.media
ADVERTORIAL Your attorney or attorneys can be anyone who is over 18 who has not been declared bankrupt. You can have one attorney, or more than one, or have one with a replacement if your chosen attorney cannot act for any reason. You should consider carefully who your attorney should be – someone who is suited to the decision making process (whether financial or care or both) and someone you trust to carry out your wishes in the event that you are unable to yourself. Whilst you can prepare an LPA yourself online, I wouldn’t advise it – these are important documents and very easy to get wrong - seeing a solicitor who specialises in this area is invaluable.
Our Private Client department at Peacock & Co Solicitors have experience in all areas of private client services including creation of powers of attorney. We invite you to contact our office for more information about our 30 minute free consultation regarding our services.

EPSOM & EWELL BUSINESS AWARDS
BUSINESS ACCOLADE Search for Epsom’s best businesses to get under way with launch of 2017 awards The search for Epsom’s best businesses will officially get under way next month. The Epsom & Ewell Business Awards, set up by MP Chris Grayling in 2011, champion innovation, enterprise and the hard work of individuals and companies across the business spectrum. And last year’s overall winners are urging businesses to enter. The Personal Agent, which was established in 2004 by Rupert Briggs and Richard Digance, has grown from humble beginnings. Setting up office above McDonald’s in Epsom, the agency launched with no properties on its books but with the founding principle that offering a personal service to all clients would make it stand out from the competition. Overcoming many hurdles along the way, the estate agency now has five branches across the borough. It was named Best Overall Business last November, after also scooping the award for Best SME Business. The 2017 awards, which out&about is supporting, will be officially launched by MP Chris Grayling at Nescot College on July 7. The awards were established by Mr Grayling to recognise and celebrate the success stories of businesses and individuals in the borough of Epsom and Ewell, including Ashtead, Nork and Tattenhams. He said: “Epsom and Ewell has always had a dynamic
business community, and our businesses continue to provide an excellent service to their customers. The Epsom & Ewell Business Awards have made a real difference to the profile of businesses locally and I am delighted to launch them once again this year. I urge people to take the opportunity to give businesses and individuals in the area a boost and to nominate outstanding contributors.” There are 10 categories to enter, with an overall award for the best business. Prizes include a tour of the House of Commons, £1,000 worth of radio advertising with Radio Jackie, membership to Surrey Chambers for the overall winner, membership to thebestofEpsom&Ewell for Best New Business and a host of other prizes for category winners. The deadline for entries is September 30, with the winners announced at an awards ceremony at the University for the Creative Arts in Epsom in November.

ASHTEAD JAZZ CLUB
Jazz
ALL THAT
Grassroots club celebrates five years in Ashtead and, as founder Tom Early reveals, has big plans for the future
Think of a jazz club and you might imagine being transported to a small, darkly-lit basement room tucked away down a city side street. Which makes Ashtead an unlikely setting for a club that has been drawing in rising young stars and grandees on the jazz circuit alike. But Ashtead Jazz Club (AJC) has been doing just that. Drummer and percussionist Tom Early set up the club five years ago alongside his childhood friend, and fellow jazz
musician, Tim Boniface. The club opened on July 19, 2012, as a one-off night with the band playing a mix of original tunes and re-workings of jazz classics. It was the success of this evening that convinced Tom to take on The AJC as a regular venue. He said: “It was really well received, so we thought let’s make it a more regular event. “At the start it was just us (Tom and Tim) and a house band but as jazz musicians, and through our other work, we have a network of contacts. We started to introduce other acts.” Those acts have included seasoned artists like US saxophonist Scott Hamilton and Digby Fairweather, as well as a new generation of musicians, like Sara Spade, who played at the club last month. Tom, who also runs The Lantern Jazz Club in Raynes Park, believes it is the new artists who are helping to bring jazz to a younger, more mainstream audience and is partly responsible for the number of smaller clubs and venues popping up. “Jamie Cullum and Harry Connick Jr are popular with younger people.”

ASHTEAD JAZZ CLUB
Coming up… Acclaimed harpist and vocalist Tara Minton returns to Ashtead Jazz Club on July 21 with her band. Expect beautiful orchestral pieces as well as jazz and folk tunes and if you’re lucky some tracks from her new album, The Tides of Love. Ashtead Jazz Club’s fifth birthday party will take place in November when they will have a number of previous acts back for a special one-off concert. Follow them on social media for details. Tara Minton Trio, July 21, Ashtead Jazz Club, Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, KT21 2BE www.ashteadjazzclub.com
But jazz’s influence extends far beyond those circles. It can be heard in mainstream pop and even reached this year’s Eurovision song contest, with winner Salvador Sobral, of Portugal, singing a ballad with jazz undertones.
@AshteadJazzClub www.facebook.com/ashteadjazzclub
Tom’s own route into jazz started at a relatively young age. “When I was at school I was in a swing band. I have always loved that style of playing, I loved Frank Sinatra and that sound. “It was always in there somewhere, it was just discovering it." “What I love about the club is that people just come because they want to listen to great jazz — it doesn’t matter who is on. “There is something about jazz, it makes you want to be up close, almost right up on the stage. “We set the club up with tables. It is very relaxed, very chilled. Intimate is the perfect word for it.” Reflecting on the past five years, Tom said he was surprised at how the club has taken off. “When I first started the club I didn’t necessarily have a vision of where it was going to go. I just thought I’d get to play jazz and meet new people.” Five years on he has bigger plans for the future and is looking at whether the club can host monthly concerts and perhaps stage one-off concerts at larger venues. In the meantime, there’s a fifth birthday party to plan.

AN UNKNOWN WOMAN If we are what we own, who are we when we own nothing? “What’s that noise?” Anita sat upright in bed, blinking blindly in the dark. Ed rolled onto his side, dragging the duvet with him and groaning, “What noise?” “That banging.” Ed insisted, “I can’t hear anything. Go back to sleep.” But Anita knew she hadn’t imagined it. She willed it to come again. “There!” She grabbed at it, her lungs so tight with fear that she could barely breathe. “Someone’s trying to break in!” “No.” All attention now, Ed was up on his elbows, staring at the ceiling. “It’s coming from the loft.” Then a shrieking sound pierced the silence, relentless, heart-stopping, almost paralysing. The sideways leap from burglar to what else this might mean was almost too much to take on board. In disbelief, Anita asked, “Is that -?” “It’s the smoke alarm.” Already on his feet, Ed commanded, “Get up!” His hands were fists. Perhaps he imagined an intruder might have deliberately set the alarm off, intending to draw them downstairs. She saw a drift of air, cloudy and powder-grey, nothing so substantial that it fitted the description of smoke. Anita followed Ed out onto the landing. The door of the spare room was edged with a reddish glow. Before she could yell “Stop!”, Ed had reached for the doorknob. He yanked his hand away, shaking it violently, cursing loudly. Just as he hid it in the opposite armpit, the door swung inwards on its hinges. Slapped in the face by a fierce concentration of heat, they stepped back. The sight of flames devouring the wall was mesmerising, the sounds of snapping and popping surreal. A lungful of toxic black smoke escaped, then the door sucked closed. There was a moment when all she could do was blink, then Anita found herself being pushed in front of Ed, ordered downstairs. “Passports and birth certificates,” Ed said. “I’ll get those.” It seemed so urgent, the need to make the right decisions about what to save. At the foot of the staircase Anita grabbed her handbag from the banister, shrugged on her coat. Venturing into the dining room, she checked that her route to the French windows was clear. Her laptop lay on the table. She had worked late into the evening, until her eyes protested. Anita ripped out the lead, ready to pick up on her way out. About to pull out the plug, she stopped short. An inch more and she would have been touching the live electrics.

Calm down. Think. How long did she have? A minute, perhaps. She checked over her shoulder: Ed was going between the front room and the hall, throwing things out of the front door. “Shut the door!” she yelled at him. “What?” “Oxygen feeds fire.” Didn’t everybody know that? “Go out the front and shut the door behind you.” On hearing a slam, she bent over the oriental chest. In it, household documents were stored in manila folders, their edges torn from regular use. Ed thought her filing system obsessive, but they never had to search for passports. She found them quickly. Important documents stowed in her handbag, she clutched her laptop under one arm. “I said, I’ll go out the back!” She instinctively covered her nostrils and mouth as she skirted the table. Black smoke rolled the length of the ceiling, determined to ambush her. Memory urged: crouch low. Moments later she was standing on the patio, relieved to find herself breathing untainted air, marvelling at the miracle that was the night sky. It would have been a good night for star-gazing. Ed pointing and spouting facts about distant constellations whose names Anita would forget; trying to explain that they were seeing light from stars that no longer existed. “How can we see something that doesn’t exist?” Anita protested against a concept so mind-bending, though she enjoyed Ed’s enthusiasm, seeing his eyes light up. But tonight there was no time. “You need to keep moving,” she scolded herself. “Anita! Anita! You need to get out!” Jane Davis is the author of seven novels. Her debut, Half-truths and White Lies, won the Daily Mail First Novel Award and was described by Joanne Harris as ‘A story of secrets, lies, grief and, ultimately, redemption, charmingly handled by this very promising new writer.’ The Bookseller featured her in their ‘One to Watch’ section. She has since published six further novels, These Fragile Things, I Stopped Time, A Funeral for an Owl (released as a three book box-set called Second Chapter), An Unchoreographed Life (featured in the multi-author limited edition box-set, Outside the Box: Women Writing Women), An Unknown Woman, Writing Magazine’s Self-published Book of the Year 2016, and My Counterfeit Self. Jane lives in Carshalton, with her Formula 1 obsessed, beer-brewing partner, surrounded by growing piles of paperbacks, CDs and general chaos. When she is not writing, you may spot Jane disappearing up the side of a mountain with a camera in hand.

SUTTON FESTIVAL OF BUSINESS
SUTTON’S FESTIVAL OF
Business
Love your business this summer!
As the summer approaches it can mean only one thing — festival season. Not to be outdone in 2017, Sutton Chamber of Commerce is organising its own festival — the Sutton Expo, Sutton’s Festival of Business. Hosted, and sponsored by Carshalton College, on June 29th, the inaugural festival is a business-to-business expo for companies across Sutton and South London. Sutton Chamber’s Chairman, David Duncan said: “We are delighted to be launching the Sutton Festival of Business as an exciting new initiative to promote business in Sutton. We have hundreds and hundreds of brilliant companies in Sutton and we want to give them the opportunity to meet one another, showcase their products and services and provide valuable opportunities for supply chain development. “The Festival, which is an all-day event, won’t be a soulless expo with rows of badly-thought-out stands. What you will find is a hive of creativity, ideas and inspiration to help grow your business. If you’re a fully-fledged business, in the early stages of starting one, or are a buyer for a company you will find a wealth of reputable and highly-skilled suppliers all under one roof.” The festival begins with a VIP breakfast, followed by the formal opening of the expo at 10am. Keynote speakers will be on hand throughout the day to inspire visitors as they

share their stories for success. The Festival of Business is being organised in partnership with FHW Events & Marketing, the publishers of out&about. Isabella Harding, FHW’s Events Director, said: “We hope businesses across Sutton will visit the Festival of Business; stands are available from just £195 + VAT, and it is free to attend as a visitor. Put the date in your diary now and come and see us in June.” To book a stand or register for free admission please visit
