Textiles AND Sewing

Learning new skills with Stitches Academy in Cheam This year Stitches is 7 years old. We specialise in teaching textiles and sewing in a fun and engaging way to children and adults in our workshop on Upper Mulgrave Road in Cheam. We teach a variety of projects across our classes from fashion design, garment construction, art textiles, surface pattern decoration and more. This term we are working on custom designed hoodies and luxury sweaters and moving into the winter months we will be working on shackets and seasonal projects. We pride ourselves on the standard of our classes. All our students are offered the opportunity to achieve accredited Arts Award qualifications. These qualifications are awarded by Trinity College London and give the students

additional qualifications to use towards college and university applications. The Awards are open to all students aged 5 upwards and since starting them just before Covid, we have presented 40 Awards and have another 19 in moderation.

hand to sewing scrub caps for hospital staff. Staff, students and volunteers made almost 1800 in total, with the local community coming together to donate fabric and money. Once the need for scrub caps subsided, we returned to our previous project - Morsbags.

One of the things that is most important to us, is teaching our students life skills that will help to reduce landfill and understand the pitfalls of fast fashion. We try to reduce the amount of waste fabric that we create by designing zero waste garments and accessories and by teaching the children, how to cut and design patterns that use the least amount of fabric.

Morsbags is an Australian charity that brings together groups of people with the common goal of reducing fabric in landfill and reducing plastic. Shopping bags are made out of fabric, usually old duvets or curtains and then distributed into the community with the aim to encourage people to use a reusable bag instead of plastic.

We also support community initiatives whenever we can. During the pandemic we were unable to teach so we turned our

We were delighted to receive Madam Mayor and her Deputy last week who officially launched our Morsbag project.

SANTA STORK

Santa Stork FLIES AGAIN THIS CHRISTMAS Your Surrey-based baby bank We have been talking to Donna at Surrey-based baby bank Stripey Stork about their very important Christmas campaign this year. ‘At Stripey Stork we collect donations of equipment, clothes, toys and other items for babies and children, and distribute them to families experiencing hardship in Surrey and surrounding areas. Every Christmas our Santa Stork campaign helps to ensure deserving local children receive a new gift to open on Christmas morning. In some cases, this gift will be the main, or only present, these children will receive.

Our aim is to ensure we have enough funds to buy presents for every child and parent referred to us this Christmas. This festive season we are anticipating more demand than ever before. So Stripey will be flapping those stripey wings extra hard to respond to 5,000 children and 2,500 parents/carers gift requests!

From November, please visit their virtual Santa Shop, in partnership with Toy Barnhaus, to pledge money to buy a Santa Stork gift: www.stripeystork.org.uk/ santashop

But to achieve this Stripey really needs your help.’

Christmas

AT POLESDEN LACEY At Polesden Lacey, the house and garden have been transformed by the evergreen beauty of the festive season. In Margaret Greville’s party house, woodland animals have taken over the festive preparations and decorated the house for Christmas. The house will be open daily from 27 Nov – 23 Dec and on Boxing Day to explore and enjoy.

Weekends are getting booked up fast, but Friday performances are still available.

The magic continues outdoors with a theatre experience for the younger ones created by the Visitor Enhancement Experience and The Cat’s Grin Theatre Company. Take them on a magical adventure into the enchanted wood to help two elves find Father Christmas and the lost presents and meet the great man himself.

We are also hosting wreath making workshops on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout December. You can join a morning and afternoon session to make your own Christmas wreath using foliage gathered from the estate. There will also be a festive treat to enjoy whilst you work. During the Christmas period, Polesden Lacey becomes a place for family and friends to come together. There are trails in the house and garden for children to enjoy, and festive meals in our café including traditional roast turkey lunch from our resident farmer, Steve Conisbee.

Our opening weekend (27 & 28 Nov) is a great opportunity to bring the younger ones with Rudolf ’s reindeer cousins visiting or why not try Percy the Park Keeper’s winter wander trail which runs from 4 Dec to 3 Jan. Pick up a trail pack for a fun filled afternoon helping Percy and his animal friends with activities and games along the way.

Gardener’s NOTES

Alex Wigley, Polesden Lacey’s Gardens and Outdoors Manager, writes Winter in the garden can still provide a huge range of form, colour and scent with trees, shrubs, perennial plants and bulbs taking centre stage. Stems of Cornus (dogwoods) through red, orange and yellow, seedheads of grasses, and the vast array of winter flowering shrubs such as Viburnum, Lonicera, Mahonia and the delicate flowers of Hamamelis (Witch Hazel). Tucked away behind the gardener’s cottage at Polesden Lacey in a quiet corner of the formal gardens, the winter garden blooms with vibrant colour and fragrance during the coldest months of the year when the rose blossoms and other summer flowers have all blown over. You can smell the winter garden before you see it with Sarcococca, sometimes known as Sweet Box or Christmas Box, announcing itself with a heady aroma. It is a rather humble-looking shrub with tiny, delicate blooms.

Designed by Graham Stuart Thomas, the garden is dominated by a wide central bed of bright yellow winter aconites (Eranthis hyemalis), interspersed with a variety of pure white snowdrops (Galanthus sp.), some dashed with streaks of green or yellow, in late January and February. Three Persian ironwood trees (Parrotia persica) form the centrepiece, drawing the eye upwards to a dark canopy of crimson buds, and the outer borders are lined with winter flowering shrubs. Shrubs such as Cotoneaster, Viburnum, Pyracantha and Callicarpa with its bright purple berries or small trees such as Sorbus provide both colour and winter food for birds. The peeling golden brown bark of Prunus serrula (Tibetan Cherry) or Acer griseum (Paper Bark Maple) are also magnificent in the low winter sun.

BANSTEAD PREP SCHOOL

BANSTEAD PREP SCHOOL Where happy children flourish and learn

Banstead Prep School is a co-educational prep school and nursery for girls and boys aged 2 – 11 and a dynamic, fun and caring environment. Headteacher Jon Chesworth explains: “Our ethos is simple. School should be fun. Happy children flourish and happy children learn. We put the children’s wellbeing at the heart of everything we do.” Based on a spacious site within walking distance of Banstead Village, this is a diverse and truly inclusive community that is ambitious to grow to realise the potential of its outstanding learning environment whilst remaining small enough to care for everyone. “I encouraged my son’s three cousins and a friend to join BPS and they have been so pleased with their decision! It’s lovely to see how happy the children are now, compared to their previous schools.” – Banstead Prep parent. The school offers a broad curriculum taught by subject specialists in senior school standard facilities

that include an astro-turfed pitch, full sized sports hall, on site swimming pool, science labs, drama and art studios. This creates opportunities for children to be excited and truly engaged with their learning, which leads naturally to academic success. Children move on from Banstead Prep to a huge range of different secondary schools, reflecting the school’s commitment to finding the right school for each individual and tailoring support and preparation for 11+ assessments. A progressive Life Skills curriculum also enables the development strong collaborative, creative and problemsolving skills. To find out more, experience our virtual open day or book a personal visit at bansteadprep.com/ admissions or contact Mrs Adrienne Forster, Head of Admissions, on 01737 363600 or admissions@bansteadprep.com
