EDITOR’S TIPS Made in Dagenham
It is nearly 50 years since a group of female machinists from Ford’s Dagenham car plant marched on Whitehall, bearing a placard that read ‘We want sex’.
The missing word — equality — was the reason they walked out on strike and brought the fight for equal pay to national attention. Female workers at the car plant were classed as unskilled while their male colleagues were classed as skilled workers and paid a higher wage. Their case ultimately led to the introduction of the 1970 Equal Pay Act. Based on the 2010 film and book by Richard Bean, Banstead and Nork Operatic Society’s production of the stage musical runs for four nights this May. WELCOME May is here, a month that promises the onset of summer and its warmer weather, and comes with the added bonus of two bank holiday weekends. We have nearly reached the halfway point in the year, hard to believe, but the longer days and lighter evenings are perfect for getting out exploring. In this edition we meet Neal and Helena Vaughan – the husband and wife team behind the inaugural Carshalton Artists' Open Studios. Taking place over two weekends in June and July, the event has captured the imagination of the village’s close-knit artistic community and brought together two artists who have studios in the same street but who, until recently, had not known about each other's work. We delve into the history of Cheam Charter Fair — thought to have been established by royal charter 758 years ago. And we look ahead to Sutton’s first Festival of Business, organised by Sutton Chamber of Commerce and FHW Events & Marketing, publishers of out&about magazine. The one-day expo provides businesses of all types and sizes the opportunity to showcase their products and services, to network and get an insight into how to grow in 2017. Pop’s self-styled cheeky chappie Olly Murs is back with a new album and a series of summer gigs. Since his big break on The X Factor, Olly Murs has gone on to score a string of number one singles and four multiplatinum selling albums, including his latest chart-topping album, 24 Hrs. We chatted to the singer ahead of his appearance at Sandown Park racecourse this August. Your new album 24 Hrs is your fourth consecutive number one album. That must be a great feeling?
“Amazing. I’m very proud of that, you know to have four consecutive number one albums is brilliant. I never expected in my wildest dreams that I would’ve got this far, so absolutely delighted." You mention this is your most honest album to date, do you feel you are constantly progressing as an artist and songwriter through your albums?
“Yes, 50/50. I wanted to do something different and I felt with this album I just didn’t know where to go next. I felt writing about what’s been actually, genuinely happening was the right thing to do. I’m just really happy that I did this album and the fact that it went to number one and people really like it.” Is there a particular track on this album that you’re most proud of and that you really want people to hear?
I think 24 Hrs and Flaws are the two songs on the album that I’m really proud of. For me 24 Hrs, the song was something I’ve never done before, both production wise and the feel of the song. ‘Flaws’ I feel is one of the best songs that I’ve written with the guys. It was really sad but I think you have to listen to the songs to kinda get the idea of what I mean. I love writing really happy feel-good songs but at the same time it’s nice to show people a different side to me and show some emotion and that’s what this album was about.” In the summer you’ve got a huge run of outdoor shows that will see you come to Sandown Park on August 10
“It’s really fun being outside and the show that we’re doing at Sandown Park is a different gig for me, I’ve never done anything like this before. I’ve done racecourse gigs in the past, but not this sort of size. I’m really proud to do it and it gives me the chance to go to different places in the UK that I haven’t been before. I can’t wait, I mean, what’s better? Go to a racecourse, I can go there during the day, I can have a little flutter on a couple of the races and then do a gig in the evening. THE POWER OF LIGHT
Each light has a different effect on the skin. Red LED light helps rejuvenate the skin by boosting the production of collagen and elastin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and evening skin tone.

They had been using LED – light-emitting diode – lights to help grow plants in space and discovered that when red LED lights shone on astronauts, wounds started to heal more quickly.
Khadra says while the benefits can be seen after one or two sessions, for long-term results a course of treatment is required.
Research revealed that LED light works on a cellular level. Wavelengths of light stimulate skin cells, increasing the rate of cellular renewal and repair and fuelling the manufacture of collagen and elastin. Khadra McVay, a qualified acupuncturist and Dermalux therapist, at the Chiltern Health Centre in Sutton, says LED light therapy is becoming increasingly popular as people seek more natural, non-invasive skin treatments. She said: “It is also really calming. Most of the time people fall asleep under the light. It can help promote well-being and can be used to counter seasonal affective disorder.” How does it work?
LED lights come in different spectrums, including red, blue and infrared. Exposure to controlled therapeutic levels of LED lights, which contain no harmful UV, has been shown to be beneficial.

THE HORTICULTURAL BAD BACK: PULL YOUR WEEDS, NOT YOUR BACK, AND WATCH YOUR GARDEN GROW
Spring is finally here, the leaves are shooting, the bulbs are sprouting and many people are spending more time outside getting their gardens ready for summer. Gardening can provide a great workout, but with all the bending, twisting and pulling, take time to prepare your body for strenuous exercise of the garden variety. Raking leaves, planting, digging and putting out the garden furniture are common reasons why many people come to see a chiropractor or an osteopath. To help avoid this type of back injury, here are just a few useful tips: • Warm-up before starting your gardening by gently stretching your muscles and moving your joints. • Try and reduce the need to bend down. Raised flowerbeds can provide great relief for chronic back pain sufferers and wearing a tool belt to hold your secateurs is not only time saving but has less stress on the spine. • Greenhouse workbenches should be built to the correct height about 2-4 inches below your elbow. • Avoid staying in one position for too long and take plenty of breaks. • Use a wheelbarrow to lift heavy objects and if you are pulling up weeds or shrubs, keep your back straight, take the strain with your legs and pull your tummy muscles in. • Don’t use heavy watering cans – only fill it half way. Alternatively, use a hose reel or an automatic irrigation system.

Take a journey of discovery and meet Carshalton’s vibrant artistic community
Discover a wealth of artistic talent on your doorstep as artists and crafts people across Carshalton open their doors to the public.
Four bitesize walking trails, taking in sights and attractions, and linking up a series of studios have been drawn up for visitors.
Over two weekends in June and July, 30 artists will open the doors to their workshops or studios, enabling the public to see works in progress, learn about the techniques employed and even try their hand at making their own piece of art.
There will also be workshops, family activities and demonstrations at art galleries, venues and businesses across the village, as well as a rare opportunity to see art works from the borough’s archives at an exhibition at Honeywood Museum, which will have a special connection to Carshalton. The Carshalton Artists' Open Studios

(CAOS) event has been almost a year in the planning, sparked by a conversation down the pub. Festival organisers Neal and Helena Vaughan hope the inaugural open studios will become an annual event. “We plan to establish this as an annual event that will increasingly benefit the community and local heritage centres. Our aim is to refresh community spirits through regular creative interaction.”

CARSHALTON ARTISTS' OPEN STUDIOS “Maybe it’s in the water,” said Neal jokingly, “but Carshalton does seem to have a long history of attracting artists.” Neal currently works predominately with charcoal, creating abstract, natural scenes, while Helena has created a series of popular vintage travel-style posters of scenic Carshalton. CAOS brings together a highly talented community of artists, from a rich diversity of backgrounds, using a wide range of artistic expression and includes artists that have exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy Summer Show and Mall Galleries. The Open Studios event will run over the weekends of June 24 and 25 and July 1 and 2.
The Corner Gallery, Carshalton Beeches, is known for its original exhibitions and workshops. The gallery will be running a programme of events on both weekends of CAOS17.
July 1, 10am-4pm Tessa Spanton and Gavin Mundy Gavin Mundy will create portraits of the public, live! Gavin is SAA Artist of the Year 2016 and his portrait work includes portraits of people, pets, vehicles and even childhood toys. SUTTON GIVING New charitable venture aspires to make Sutton a better place, writes Roger Mills Sutton Voice constantly reflects and tries to reinforce the phenomenal level of volunteer support which is given to all aspects of our community. A wonderful new initiative called Sutton Giving has been launched which hopes to bring all sides of the community together. It is well summed up with the phrase – ‘A boroughwide initiative for positive change’. Sutton Giving, a local charitable venture with a simple aspiration of making Sutton a better place to be, launched recently within the borough. Proceedings were opened by the Mayor of Sutton, alongside representatives from Sutton businesses, the voluntary sector and Sutton Council. Sutton Centre for Voluntary Sector is the driving force behind Sutton Giving, supported by City Bridge Trust. Hot on the heels of similar initiatives within London boroughs, Sutton Giving will tackle local issues in a collaborative manner by bringing communities, residents and business together. As a local ‘place-based’ initiative, Sutton Giving has local at its very core and offers an opportunity to see the difference that donations can make closer to home. Sutton is one of the more prosperous boroughs in London, but for some members of the community opportunities aren’t as readily available. Some of the borough’s richest and poorest residents exist side by side living entirely different lives. Sutton Giving will raise awareness of the issues that result from this deprivation and strive to highlight these disparities and work collaboratively to provide the right support. In addition to identifying and highlighting needs that exist within our community, Sutton Giving will strive to establish
a successful fundraising venture and distribute funds to causes in the borough that meet the needs of the most vulnerable. Working in close association with the Volunteer Centre, Sutton Giving will actively encourage members of the community to donate time and skills and will also act as a focal point for those wanting to donate to good causes within the borough of Sutton. A truly cross-sector collaboration, Sutton Giving has a skilled and energetic steering group who will help set the strategic direction for the venture – a shared vision which crucially complements the borough’s Sutton Plan. Sutton Giving’s initial area of focus will be upon young people, the future of our borough. Sutton Giving will be working with leaders from our community to improve lives that are falling through the gaps. The focus will be reviewed after an initial period and, as the funding grows, it will support a larger number of Sutton community groups and residents.

CHEAM CHARTER FAIR

Steeped in tradition, Cheam’s historic Charter Fair is believed to date back more than 700 years
While the origins of Cheam’s Charter Fair remain unclear it is believed the event dates back to the reign of Henry III.
In 1906, newspaper reports state that the people of Cheam were divided about whether the fair should continue.
In 1259 the king is said to have granted Cheam a charter making it a town. No historical record of the charter has been found to corroborate the story, but what is known is that the fair must be held annually in May or else the right to hold it is forfeited.
Continue it did, through two world wars, but in a much smaller and simpler form.
Early references suggest that the fair was, at some point in the late 1800s, under threat of disappearing, saved by a resident setting up a stall selling produce outside their home.
There was something of a revival in the fair’s fortunes in the post-war years, with the 1951 event hailed “an unqualified success”. The souvenir programme for the 1952 Charter Fair sheds light on the attractions and entertainment on offer with mention of a Mumming play and a dancing bear. There may be no bears any more but some traditions of the fair are upheld. Stall holders are not issued with a spot but instead mark out their stalls with chalk in advance. Some 70 stalls selling a variety of gifts and wares will be taking part in the fair, which will be officially opened by the Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Richard Clifton, along with the with the choir of St Dunstan’s Church and children from St Dunstan’s School at 9am on May 20. There will also be performances by the Pennyroyal Clog Dancers and Chatsworth Studio in the morning, rounding off a week of activities as part of Cheam Charter Week.

The show will go on as Sutton Theatre Company bring new musical comedy to life
The Earl of Ederidge has harboured a lifelong dream to tread the boards. So in a bid to tick off the final item on his bucket list he invests his money in a musical – on the proviso he can have a part in the show. But then fate steps in and on the eve of the show’s opening night the Earl dies. Will the show go on? Richard Sykes’ musical comedy is Sutton Theatre Company's latest production, which is at Coulsdon’s Hillcrest Halls for a four-night run this May. The show’s director, Mary Watkins, said: “As a director I am really pleased to have such a talented cast for Curtains. As a new musical comedy it has wonderfully stereotyped characters, catchy music and great one-liners.

SOWING THE SEEDS FOR GROWTH Farm crowdfunding for new barn to expand its VegBox scheme Sutton Community Farm is inviting people to buy shares in the farm, sowing seeds for its future growth. Raising funds for a new, bigger barn, it hopes to expand its VegBox scheme from 240 to 400 customers, and plough everything back into community programmes at the farm. Currently operating out of a shed built in 2010, the space is now too small to accommodate the growth of the VegBox scheme and the thriving community of 2,500 volunteers that help plant, pick, weigh and pack the salad leaves and vegetables each year. Thirty varieties of salad leaves and eight varieties of tomato are among the diverse range of organic produce grown on the farm’s 7.5-acre site in Wallington, which was transformed from an unused plot of land seven years ago. Last year it produced nearly 15 tonnes of produce and customers for the VegBox scheme increased by more than 50%.
Joris Gunawardena, head of production, said: “All grown from seed, 10,000 plants now come through our polytunnels and make their way out in to the fields with the help of the regular staff, apprentices and local volunteers. With more than 120 products, we offer a great variety for our VegBox customers. Picked on Wednesday and delivered on Thursday and Friday, it’s very fresh and tastes so sweet.” But the farm doesn’t just need extra space for its team of volunteers, but also to accommodate schools, businesses and groups who visit to learn and become involved in the process of growing, cooking and eating locally produced food. Charlotte Steel, general manager at the farm, said: “Our work with schools has become very popular and we’re receiving more and more requests to host groups. The space we have is inadequate and we are having to turn some requests down as on certain days we simply do not have the room to work with schools as well as
run our farm and VegBox scheme. “A new barn will change all that - with dedicated space for groups and an adequate kitchen for cooking and eating all together in comfort. “We are not asking for a donation, we are asking for an investment in the farm. Local people can become a Member, feel a part of the community and have a say in how things are run. With the money we raise, we can extend our reach in the community providing more people with fresh local produce to the door step thereby helping the community we support to thrive and grow.” Sutton Community Farm has secured the support of the Booster Programme, which is funded by Power to Change and run by the Community Shares Unit. Under this programme up to £68,575 is available to match applications for shares from the public. This means that for every £1 invested, up to £68,575, another £1 will be invested in shares by the Booster Programme. A range of benefits are on offer to everyone who buys share in the farm.

Break up revision into chunks
It can be hard to stay focused and motivated when it comes to revision, especially if you are feeling under pressure. Here are some strategies for getting the most out of your revision time from the team at Southern Tutors: Make a timetable
Use the exam timetable to help you to make your own revision timetable. Carve up the time available and ensure that there is some free time each day. Successful students often build in physical exercise to the timetable — this relieves stress and improves circulation and brain functioning. Free time
If time allows, have one day completely free of revision. This allows you to relax properly and come back to your books feeling refreshed. Be prepared

Having a different qualified teacher, with a fresh approach, to explain topics can help make everything fall into place. My answer is always the same – as a Chamber we are politically neutral; our aims and objectives are to support the interests and prosperity of businesses in Sutton. Brexit, however, is always a topic of conversation, and the Prime Minister’s decision to call an early general election has generated what seems like a never ending round of discussions about what is best for our economy. Whether talking to our elected members of parliament, or to regional or local politicians, I continue to press the case for businesses in Sutton to have the opportunity to trade in a competitive market, with reduced bureaucracy and access to business support. Whilst we must leave the negotiations on Brexit to Messrs Davis, Fox and Johnson there is still plenty that your Chamber of Commerce can do to support you. On 16th May we are jointly hosting a Sutton Business Leaders Forum with Carshalton College. The event, which is sponsored by Sutton Council, will provide an open forum for discussion of the Sutton Plan. The Plan sets out the priorities for services across the borough for the next 5 – 10 years involving public, voluntary and private sector partners. Marketing automation promises much as it helps you talk to your target audience quickly and easily. Tools such as MailChimp and Hootsuite can make controlling your email and social media much easier. As you move away from tools which manage a specific aspect of your marketing, your expectations go up as the cost of the automation tools increases. What you also need to think carefully about is the increase in other pressures on your business. Time
Setting up a marketing automation tool such as Salesforce, Infusionsoft or Hubspot takes careful planning and therefore time. If you are looking for marketing automation to save you time, you have to be prepared to invest a considerable amount of time up front. Data
The old adage “rubbish in, rubbish out” is so true when looking at these tools. Gone are the days when first name, last name and an email address will do. If you want to personalise
your communication to ensure maximum engagement, you have to collate that information. Budget
With Infusionsoft and Salesforce starting at $200 per month, you have to be sure you are going to get value, particularly as Brexit’s impact on exchange rates has meant a £28 per month increase since June. If you are primarily using these tools for email management, you may be better off with MailChimp, starting at $10 per month for up to 500 leads. Our recommendation
Think carefully about what you want marketing automation to deliver. The big tools promise much but they need a lot of resource to be effective. Think carefully, consider your options and be honest about the time you have available to maintain the tools you choose. By doing this, you will get far better value.
