LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the December / January issue of Out & About. The Chinese Magical Lantern Festival returns to the gardens of Chiswick House with a glorious mix of Western and Chinese mythology. Father Christmas and his reindeer sit quite happily with the ancient city of the Song dynasty in a park filled with enormous brightly lit lanterns. Until 1 January. Page 5 The Nutcracker is presented with a new twist at Watermans. Blending theatre, dance, music and puppetry, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King features evil mice intent on stealing your sweets, 9–30 December. Erica Weston interviews the Director of Watermans’ Christmas theatre production for children and introduces the January cabaret programme for grown-ups. Pages 10–11 Looking for ideas for Christmas presents? Chiswick has some great independent shops: the newly opened homeware store Greige, long established family business Wheelers Garden Centre, Butcher & Deli Hammonds by Kew Bridge and the Devonshire Rd emporium of all things beautiful in ceramics, textiles, wood, glass and jewellery, Frivoli Gallery to name but a few. I asked twelve shops for suggestions from their most popular ranges. Pages 12–13 Christmas is not all happiness and joy though. It’s miserable for some. to make more people get on their bikes. The latest, CS9, is proposed to run from Olympia to Brentford, but there is stiff opposition locally. Page 14 Similarly Hounslow council leader Steve Curran has a vision for Dukes Meadows of top-of-the-range sports facilities available to all. The proposals, in the early planning stages, also involve a general upgrade of the public areas of common land. CHINESE MAGICAL LANTERN

Festival

Chiswick House & Gardens

Chiswick House and Gardens was voted the People’s Choice in the London In Bloom award for the best park. Not only is it free to enter and immaculately kept with beautiful Georgian architecture and interesting displays of plants seasonally, but it has a year-long programme of fun events. The Magical Lantern Festival returned to the gardens of Chiswick House in November. Weli Creations have put on Magical Lantern festivals here twice before, but both have been to mark the Chinese New Year with the emphasis on the culture and history of China. This festival is a celebration of Christmas, with life size and larger than life lanterns in all shapes and forms, including Santa and his reindeers, but it also features brightly lit sculptures inspired by Chinese culture, such as the ancient city of the Song dynasty. There is plenty of food and drink on offer, a Santa’s Grotto and a funfair. The festival runs until 1st January 2018.

HEN CORNER Sara Ward offers some ideas for both giving and receiving As the coldest, darkest days of winter approach, it’s good to know that there are good organisations in Hounslow which are supporting less fortunate members of our community.

The Shelter Project Hounslow

The Shelter Project Hounslow offers dinner, bed and breakfast to local homeless men throughout the coldest months. Using church buildings up and down the borough as bases, volunteers set up, cook, welcome, serve, befriend and clear up, providing a lifeline for those in need of warmth and comfort. The focus is very much be on the quality of service to guests: welcome, hospitality, inclusivity and a non-judgemental approach. Refugees Welcome Hounslow

Fundraiser

Refugees Welcome Hounslow are an open group of local residents organising resources and people to welcome Syrian refugee families into our communities. They are looking in particular for landlords who are willing to rent out one and two bed units. The families are in receipt of benefits and are able to pay the Local Housing Allowance. The tenants are supported by the Council and Refugees Welcome. If you are able to help them in any way, contact them though their Facebook page: Facebook.com/RefugeesWelcomeHounslow

Carols in the Park (Mon 18th December, 6.30pm) is raising funds for both these projects. Organised by Friends of St Paul’s Rec, Brentford, this is a fabulous community event where you can meet the shepherds’ sheep, Mary’s donkey and join in the carol singing warmed by mulled wine and mince pies. Christmas AT WATERMANS!

Erica Weston on Watermans’ theatre programme for children and cabaret for grownups

The 2017 Christmas show is The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, inspired by the story made famous by Tchaikovsky’s ballet. The play is brought to Watermans by WinterWalker, an up-and-coming young company based in Derby. It’s a beautifully produced show with buckets of charm and laughter… and rather a lot of sweets! So it’ll be sure-fire hit with the kids.

What's the thing that kids love most about the show?

The evil mice are a big hit – they’re cheeky and silly, and they’re after your sweets! Children also really respond to the relationship between Pearl and Pat, the two sisters telling the story – they have to compromise and work together, and I think that’s something that resonates with most brothers and sisters.

We talked to WinterWalker’s artistic director, Kitty Winter, about the inspiration behind the show and her love of children’s theatre. What inspired you to make this show?

All the best Christmas stories have magic in them, and the story of the Nutcracker is one of the most spectacular. We wanted to take the classic story and the music from the ballet, that so many people have enjoyed through the years, and make something new, funny, and of course magical!

Why did you get into children's theatre in the first place?

I was lucky enough to see amazing theatre for children when I was young, and I’ve always loved the way it can be so inventive and mix together different performance elements. WinterWalker is run by a director/choreographer and a composer (myself and Wayne Walker-Allen) so all our shows blend theatre, dance and music, often with puppetry too – whatever best serves the story we’re telling. What do you want for Christmas?

As a parent to a very small boy, I’d like a lie-in! The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (suitable for ages 3 and over) is at Watermans 9–30 Dec. Tickets from £10–£12 (family tickets £36–40). The new children’s season starts on Sunday 21st January with Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf by Little Angel Theatre, an alternative take on the classic story – about two misfits who just want to fit in.

Something for the grown ups

The autumn season’s Friday night cabaret has been really popular with our audiences who have loved seeing something a bit different on their doorsteps. We launched The Outer Limits, a new variety night hosted by awardwinning trailblazer Dusty Limits, who brings the best of the cabaret scene to our stage. The Outer Limits will become a regular feature of our programme, and judging by this autumn’s show, something to look forward to! Cabaret is back in February with three more acts to cheer the cold winter nights. First up is notorious cabaret reprobate Joe Black who evokes the spirit of the infamous 1920's Berlin nightclub in Meet Me at the Eldorado. Then Miss Hope Springs, a hilarious tale of an aging showgirl in The Devil Made Me Do It. An absolute highlight is Grammy-nominated American pianist, vocalist and songwriter Judy Carmichael who will arrive at Watermans via the Jools Holland Show. Her show Swing Time is a celebration of the great American songbook: Gershwin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller and more. The New York

Times called her ‘astounding, flawless, captivating’. She’s a fantastic talent, and not to be missed! Cabaret Nights from 2 Feb 2018. Watermans.org.uk The Outer Limits, Friday 16 March 2018.

CYCLE SUPERHIGHWAY Proposals receive a mixed reception Transport for London is proposing to create a Cycle Superhighway (CS9) from West Kensington through Hammersmith and Chiswick to Brentford town centre to make cycling and walking ‘easier, safer, and more appealing’. London’s Commissioner for Walking and Cycling Will Norman told a public debate organised by The Chiswick Calendar that London is going to see “extraordinary population growth” over the next period, that we have an “inactivity crisis” as people are not doing enough exercise, and we already have problems with air pollution, all of which meant that we needed to find ways of making the city cleaner and less congested and its population healthier.

Chiswick High Rd plans controversial

While most people accept the importance of those aims, TfL has received a huge amount of critical feedback on its proposals for a number of different and specific reasons. The most controversial part of the plan is a two-way segregated cycle track on the south side of Chiswick High Rd, which opponents feel is at the expense of pedestrians and would ruin the ‘village’ atmosphere of Chiswick, where people like to stroll on the wide pavements and sit outside the cafes. There is concern about the safety aspect for pedestrians crossing the cycle route; the Catholic Church says it will affect weddings and funerals and businesses are worried about access. Residents groups have expressed concern about the effect on traffic congestion at British Grove, where traffic arrangements are being changed, and at the other end of the High Rd where the closure of Wellesley Rd and Stile Hall Gardens as exits to the South Circular will add more traffic to Chiswick roundabout. TfL themselves admit that the proposals are likely to add several minutes to journey times along the High Rd for vehicles at peak times.

14

Sky and GSK back the plans

In Brentford the proposals are less controversial, with a cycle route planned along the riverside through Watermans Park. Two of west London’s biggest employers Sky and GSK have come out in favour of CS9. Bella Vuillermoz, director of Osterley-based Sky, said: “Like many organisations in London a growing number of Sky’s employees cycle to work, but an even larger proportion of our employees would cycle to work if they felt comfortable and safe on the roads”.

Cyclists divided

A fair amount of hostility has been directed against cyclists during some of the public debates but cyclists themselves are also divided on the issue, with Hounslow Cycling Campaign in favour but others expressing the view that the money could be better spent improving the roads for cycling in other ways. Quite a lot of criticism is about the route, with many saying the A4 option has been dismissed too easily. TfL will now consider the feedback and a report will go to the participant borough councils: Hounslow, Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea as well as TfL’s own board before further action is taken.

You can see the proposals here: consultations.tfl.gov.uk

OMNIGENIUS Board games are making a comeback

In an age where kids are glued to smartphones and tablets for entertainment, a family start-up company based in Isleworth is reintroducing the charm of board games. Shalin and Tressy Pinto set up the company two years ago, seeing the benefits to families of playing together: “As a parent, when you play board games with your kids, you get to spend a lot of time with them and teach them the importance of bonding together as a family”. OMNI GENEius™ are innovators, coming up with ideas for family board games, strategy board games and toys, working both in London and Hong Kong.

They say playing board games stimulates curiosity. It introduces children to the discipline of following rules, develops patience and encourages children to think proactively, as they are trained to anticipate the moves of the other players. Playing board games also helps children deal with failure – to see setbacks as stepping stones to success rather than disasters. “When you play board games with your kids, you get an opportunity to teach them that it is alright to lose in

life sometimes. Kids will learn not to repeat their mistakes. These games will teach your kids to lose gracefully”. They also maintain that children who are introduced to board games at an early age are better able to concentrate and that learning to work in tandem with other people teaches them to be good team players. To see the range of products for all age groups, children and grown-ups, visit their website at

Andy Eddy, Head Gardener at Osterley Park and House shares with us some of the highlights to look out for on your next visit to Osterley Park. Osterley Park's formal gardens were transformed during a six-year-long project from an overgrown wilderness back to their 18th century grandeur of herbaceous borders, roses and ornamental vegetables beds. There is plenty to see all year round in the gardens at Osterley. Mrs Child's Flower Garden provides a relaxing walk and colourful beds in summer, but is still perfect for a stroll on a crisp winter’s day. In the Ornamental Vegetable Garden, winter displays some final bursts of colour, the canary yellow obelisks standing proud amongst the last purple cabbages and chard of the year. Or for a shaded woodland walk, stretch your legs with a stroll around the Long Walk, admiring the Charolais cattle grazing the ancient meadow behind the House and past the forgotten boathouse. The winter sun throws long shadows on the lawns and the bare trees show off their slender branches against the grey skies. The ever-evolving Winter Garden provides bursts of coloured bark, fabulous leaf shapes and seed heads to showcase the architecture found in our gardens at this time of year. Covered in a thick haw frost, every branch and berry is defined. We are also delighted to welcome dogs in the formal gardens and café this winter so you can explore and enjoy all Osterley has to offer with your four-legged friends. Don’t forget to pop into the Stables Café afterwards and warm up with a hot drink and a tasty treat from the winter menu.

Upgrade SPORTS

Proposals for the development of Duke’s Meadows

A major upgrade in sporting facilities at Dukes Meadows is being proposed by Hounslow Council. The area of unspoilt common land between Chiswick Bridge and Chiswick Pier is home to the Tideway Skullers rowing club at one end and Chiswick Pier Trust at the other, with Chiswick Rugby Club, Old Meadownians Football Club and Chiswick Cricket Club in between as well as three more rowing clubs, Barnes & Hounslow Hockey Club, two multi-sport centres: Virgin’s Riverside club and the Dukes Meadows Golf & Tennis club and the sportsground for a private school, King’s House, most of whom lease the land from the council.

18

The sporting facilities share the area with a large number of allotments and the Duke’s Meadows Trust, which runs an adventure playground and paddling pool, a Sunday morning food market and artists’ studios. There is also a pretty bandstand by the river, an area popular for weekend picnics.

New pitches

The proposals are intended to keep the unspoilt nature of the place but at the same time improve sports facilities. They include ‘public realm’ plans to do things like tidy the bushes and put in better lighting and signage as well as renovating the bandstand, and sports investment proposals to redevelop Chiswick Boathouse, provide a new artificial grass pitch for rugby, with an extension to the rugby pavilion for both rugby and hockey, refurbish the hockey pitch, provide a new football pavilion and two 3G artificial grass pitches for football as well as improvements to the grass pitches for both football and rugby.

LOCAL NEWS

Where’s the money coming from?

In a series of consultations throughout October and November the council has met the clubs. It is proposed that the money should come from third parties such as the FA, the RFU and British Rowing, but not all the clubs are wholeheartedly on board. Old Meadownians FC has serious concerns over the proposed project costs and has voted not to accept the proposal of investment they have been offered through the Football Association Parklife Programme because they say the new facilities are not guaranteed and they may end up worse off than they are now. The majority of the sports clubs are happy with the proposals.

L@outandabout_mag

Others have expressed concern at the increased number of parking spaces and the expected increase in traffic generated by the improved sports facilities. The next stage is for the Parks department to apply to the Planning department for planning permission early in 2018 and then to raise the funds.

The proposals can be seen on the council website www.hounslow.gov.uk/consulations

CHISWICK TIMELINE Karen Liebreich on the Installation of Chiswick's History in Art and Maps The Chiswick Timeline: A History in Art and Maps is a major new artwork for Chiswick, to be installed on the bridges under the Piccadilly and District lines outside Turnham Green tube station. The enormous mural – consisting of two large panels, each measuring 27metres long x 3metres high – presents a series of historic maps tracing Chiswick’s history from 1593 to the present day. Overlaid on these maps are artworks showing Chiswick landmarks by 23 artists including William Hogarth, Eric Ravilious, William Turner and others. Exclusive artworks have also been commissioned from Chiswick’s artistic community: Sir Peter Blake has collaged Chiswick High Road’s Empire Theatre, while Jan Pienkowski, children’s illustrator, has created a haunting image of the Russian Orthodox Church in Chiswick. Marthe Armitage, famous for her hand-drawn lino blocks, and Martin Rowson, political cartoonist, complete the list of living artists whose work will be featured. The panels are created in vitreous enamel, a process that combines both modern and traditional techniques. Each map is prepared digitally before being manually screen printed and baked colour by colour. HOUNSLOW CHAMBER

CHAMBER NEWS Brand management on the slant When you live and work on a houseboat everything changes, all the time. It’s not just that when you wake up you are at a different level than you were when you went to bed; the tide has gone in or out so the view out the window is completely different, but that your working environment is tilting – one way or the other, depending on the state of the tide – and that once a day loud creaking and the grinding of 75 tons of metal on clay and stone announces that you have gone aground. Simon Cohen, who runs his own branding design and strategy company Simon Inc, has his office aboard Whim, a Humber keel boat built in 1918 which was converted into a houseboat 15 years ago. Moored at Ferry Quays, where the River Brent joins the River Thames, he and his wife Emma bought the boat five years ago (on a whim) when they were looking around for a home which represented better value for money than the rented apartment they shared in Hammersmith. Simon is a designer who helps national and global companies build their brand identity and express their values and personality through environmental graphics. His business is a “virtual agency” model, where creative teams (both large and small) work together on local, national and international projects, but based within their own individual workplaces. At the centre of things is the houseboat. Their customers include commercial developers such as Capital & Regional plc, which operates, buys and manages large commercial properties such as shopping centres, as well as architects, a law firm in New Zealand and the Lloyds Banking Group. This colourful hoarding at The Mall Walthamstow is an example of their work.

Most of Simon’s work is done on computer. When he needs to do large scale work he decamps to an office in the centre of London, but for the most part the Whim provides a large, light airy space in which to design and an interesting place for clients to come. Typically the clients work in central London and welcome the opportunity to visit a houseboat and enjoy the change of scenery, not to mention the attention of Sid, the very photogenic 11 year old mongrel.

CHAMBER NEWS Chiswick Rugby Club to get 4G pitch Chiswick Rugby Club looks set to benefit from £1.3m worth of funding from the RFU to build the latest generation of artificial, all weather pitch at Duke’s Meadows. The club, which has some 500 members, currently fields four senior teams in addition to the Minis, 200 girls and boys aged 5–13 who practise there on Sundays. After the 2015 World Cup the RFU announced more than £50m investment which they promised to deliver over four years to provide 100 artificial grass pitches across England in order to grow the game. “Over the past four years, RFU data shows that wetter winters are having a serious impact on the rugby season, resulting in more games and training sessions being cancelled," said RFU Rugby Development Director Steve Grainger. "In February 2014, 1,766 adult games were lost over two weekends due to bad weather and over 600 natural turf pitches were unplayable for three weeks as a result”. Chiswick Rugby Club met their criteria so the RFU has offered to install the new pitch, which will be lit, enabling the club to play at night as well as in all weathers. The RFU will own the pitch, ring-fencing 12 hours a week for the club and renting it the rest of the time at a reduced rate to others wanting to play rugby. The Dukes Meadows club currently has three grass pitches. They will keep the remaining two, as the four senior teams practise on Tuesdays and Thursdays and play on Saturdays. The First team plays currently in London Division 2, Second team in Middlesex Merit Table 1, Third team in Middlesex Merit Table 4 and Fourth team in Middlesex Merit Table 6. They hope to develop a women’s rugby team in the near future. The Minis play many local teams and there are now more than 20 parents who have taken RFU coaching courses which have allowed them to play an active role on the pitch as well. This comes at a time when Hounslow Council is proposing an upgrade of sporting facilities generally at Dukes Meadows. Having held a public consultation, the plans now go to the Planning committee, before bids go out to third parties for funding. Chiswick Rugby Club are ahead of the game.

CHAMBER NEWS Continental Hotel refurbishment The Continental Hotel in Hounslow is undergoing a total refurbishment. The hotel, used mainly by business people, has seen a transformation over the past year, with the 70 bedrooms shedding their rather gaudy but shabby look for a clean, modern look with 42” or 55” TV screens standard in all the rooms. The past year has also seen a change of staff and significant upgrade in its kitchen, going from microwaved ready meals to freshly produced food home-made on the premises, with all the normal fare – fish and chips, pies, burgers and a range of Indian dishes and few fancier Fusion dishes. The hotel used to be infamous as a hang-out for prostitutes, with a constant stream of women who didn’t know the name of the person they were visiting seeking access late at night. General Manager Ashley Sutherland says they’ve worked with the local police to minimise the extent to which prostitutes operate in the hotel. Unless the clients are very discreet, they’re turned away. The Continental is benefitting from the renewal of Hounslow centre and the all the development going in in the area. The Civic Centre is moving to new premises and a new

cinema complex is being built just down the road. The hotel also boasts a huge gym which attracts locals as well as guests. A franchise of Golds gyms, the facilities are on a par with Virgin or David Lloyd, with a 20 metre swimming pool, large Jacuzzi and his ‘n hers steam rooms available to members for only £25 - £35 per month. As part of the hotel’s new look, all the gym equipment is being replaced at a total cost of £2.5 million. The refurbishment has been reflected in the prices, with a drastic increase in room rates, doubling from £50 per night for a standard double to £100, but guests are getting a hugely improved standard for their money. Phase two of refurbishment is due to begin early in the new year, with the whole ground floor being transformed into an open-plan space incorporating the bar, restaurant and reception decked out in black, silver and chrome. In fact a whole new hotel.

The Continental Hotel is at 29-31 Lampton Rd, Hounslow TW3 1JA. Tel: 020 8572 3131 www.thecontinental-hotel.com

HOUNSLOW BUSINESS AWARDS 2017 Russell Finex wins Best Business Award This year’s Hounslow Business Awards, run by the Hounslow Chamber in association with Hounslow Highways, showcased the huge amount of hard work, energy and enthusiasm behind some extremely successful businesses in the borough.

Best in Customer Service

Winner of Best Business was Russell Finex, a good oldfashioned engineering firm, still continuing to manufacture sieving and filtration equipment in Feltham after 83 years, long after other firms have relocated abroad to a cheaper workforce.

Best Business for Marketing & Social Media

A company run for the benefit of its workers

Winner – Farah Qureshi Highly Commended – Consolidated Logistics Ltd Commended – In Your Face Advertising

Managing Director Ray Singh says they have maintained their manufacturing base here in the UK because they value their workforce tremendously: "the skillset that we have in our workforce is very, very difficult to find". The company is owned by its own pension fund, so there are no outside shareholders and instead of paying out dividends to shareholders the company is run for the benefit of the current and past employees. Everyone working there is investing directly in their own future. Perhaps because of this, Russell Finex has continued to grow at an amazing rate at a time when other firms have been shedding jobs. It now has four overseas sales subsidiaries, in the USA, Belgium, India and most recently in China. They also picked up the award for Best Business for Social Media and Innovator of the Year award, for a refinement in the technique of 3D printing.
