As the weather turns crisper hunker down indoors and warm up beside a roaring fire Pic: Shutterstock
There is a nip in the air, the nights are drawing in and the trees are bathed in striking hues of red, gold and ombre. Autumn has arrived in all its glory and it is a great time to be outdoors making the most of the weather and enjoying the open spaces that we are lucky to have on our doorstep.
EDITOR’S TIPS Remembering Battle of the Somme See the iconic film The Battle of the Somme, accompanied by a new musical score, in Cheam this November. Footage from the front line was watched by almost half of the UK population when it was shown in 1916 as people flocked to cinemas to catch a glimpse of family or friends who had gone to war. To mark the centenary of the end of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in history, Imperial War Museum and Somme100 FILM are coordinating 100 live orchestral performances around the UK and beyond. In Cheam, the film screening will be accompanied by a live performance by Sutton Youth Symphony Orchestra of Laura Rossi’s score. The audience is invited to attend a short service of remembrance after the screening led by the Reverend Philip Gray. The event, organised by Sutton Council and Sutton Music Service, is free but tickets must be booked via www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/battle-of-the-sommetickets-21342533091 Battle of the Somme, St Andrew’s Church, Northey Avenue, Cheam, November 11, 7pm
With poles at the ready we find about Nordic walking and its benefits to health and wellbeing and we head into the woods with forest school leader Christopher Pryke to discover how this innovative approach to teaching helps children to grow in confidence, build social skills and learn about the natural environment. The start of November also signals the countdown to Christmas, a magical time of year whatever your age. If you are in need of gift inspiration then look no further than our feature on Pop Up Sutton where we meet a group of entrepreneurs taking their first steps in business. With products ranging from chilli oils to handcrafted jewellery, your search for that unique present could be just a few pages away. We’ll also be looking ahead to this year’s Sutton Business Excellence Awards, which take place on November 17 and will recognise and celebrate the success of the business community. Wishing all our readers a very happy Christmas and new year.

CHIROPRACTIC FROM THE START –Recognising TREATING BABIES EARLY ON and dealing with birth trauma
CHILTERN HEALTH CENTRES Sutton • Crawley • Leatherhead • Carshalton
Chiltern Health Centre Sutton Chiropractic Clinic 137 Brighton Rd, Sutton Surrey, SM2 5SW
After the struggles of birth every new mother and baby should be able to enjoy a restoring and harmonic time together. Nevertheless, some babies will seem unsettled and are unable to get comfortable. Cause for this could be birth trauma due to a complicated or prolonged labour. This is frequently unrecognised with babies being classified as ‘crybabies’ and consequences are often underestimated. The qualified chiropractor will detect any underlying issues with a thorough examination. They can then treat the baby with soft neuromuscular techniques to allow a healthy development without any functional disturbances to the musculoskeletal system. When do we talk about birth trauma and how can a mother possibly recognise it?
The baby’s body is under a lot of stress and enormous pressure during the natural birth process. Mechanical forces from contractions and the passing through the birth canal act on the skull bones, spine and nervous system. Overlapping of the skull bones is essential to prevent any excessive head deformities or damage to the nervous system. Moreover it creates healthy movement of the membranes lining the skull from the inside (cerebral membranes) and healthy circulation of the fluid inside the skull (cerebrospinal fluid). Any interference or complication during birth can cause interruptions to these necessary processes; for instance medication, use of ventouse or forceps or a C-section. Tight muscles, joints and fixations of the skull bones are the result, which in return can have a mechanical or neurological impact on the rest of the musculoskeletal system.
L@outandabout_mag
Breastfeeding difficulties are one of the major effects of a traumatic birth. This is caused by joint dysfunctions in the cranium (skull), base of the skull (occiput) or the jaw. A poor latch for instance could be caused by compression of the relevant nerves or a fixation in the jaw. Positional effects are common following a difficult birth. Such babies show one-sided head or body positioning and difficulties rotating the head to both sides equally which is caused by tight muscles or joints in the spine or pelvis. Mothers might notice the baby is only able to feed or sleep in a certain position. Often they are not able to react to visual and audio stimuli from all sides. Babies who can only lie on one side or turn their head to one side only will eventually develop an asymmetrical head shape. This flat-head-syndrome becomes visible a few weeks after birth and causes further restrictions in the skull – a vicious cycle that should be stopped as soon as possible to prevent permanent asymmetry. Should you recognise any of these symptoms with your child, do not hesitate to see a qualified paediatric chiropractor. The treatment is very gentle using light pressure and easy mobilisations. Most babies can improve after only a few sessions.

LOCAL BUSINESSES
Starting a business is no mean feat. Negotiating the minefield of legalities and financial planning can often stop many small businesses in their tracks. With this in mind Opportunity Sutton launched Pop Up Sutton - an 18-month programme to guide entrepreneurs through the process of setting up and running a business.
Workshops, mentoring and one-to-one advice sessions are included and businesses are also given a pop-up stall on a monthly market where they can test out and hone their product offering. out&about meets some of the entrepreneurs taking part in the scheme. a heat pad. The pad can be removed and heated in either a microwave or a pan of just-boiled water. Once the pad has reached the core temperature it can be popped back into place and the heat radiates through the slippers keeping feet snug and warm. Using her savings, Simi set out on a creative and development process from which SnugToes was born. The heated slippers have been designed with a pocket at the front which holds

Your skin is the body’s largest organ. Shersam Naturals has created a range of products that are as close to nature as possible to moisturise and care for your skin and hair. Using active ingredients including jojoba oil, shea butter, beeswax, almond and coconut oil, Vitamin E, and essential oils for fragrance, all the products are handmade in small batches. Gillian Miller developed the range after becoming increasingly disillusioned with buying pricey moisturisers which, after a while, she found did little for her skin. An advocate of natural ingredients, she went about creating her own moisturisers. After completing a training course, Gillian launched Shersam Naturals and is now looking at expanding her product range to include soaps and lip balms.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Christmas GIVING
at the St Nicholas Centre Christmas is coming to the St Nicholas Shopping Centre and this year it is bigger and better than ever before. It all kicks off on Thursday, November 17, as we invite everyone to join us from 4pm for an evening of free entertainment as we turn on our spectacular Christmas lights. Father Christmas will then be opening his brand new grotto on Saturday, December 3, where he will be joined by two of his reindeer. Then throughout the festive period there will be lots of community performances, including the annual St Raphael’s School carol performance on Friday, December 9, and some special surprises along the way. But most importantly is our Christmas Giving Tree Appeal. For those of you who are not familiar with the appeal, for the past 16 years we have supported local women’s refuges at Christmas by asking customers to buy a gift for a child who has to stay in a safe house over Christmas. Unfortunately, we are not all blessed with a happy and safe family life, with some having to leave their homes due to
domestic violence. These families leave with nothing and in most circumstances are unable to have any contact with family. The Giving Tree Appeal aims to make these children’s Christmas Day a little bit brighter by ensuring they have a present to open. If you would like to support this year’s appeal, all you have to do is be a little bit generous. So when you’re out shopping for your family and friends, please add just one more gift to your shopping list. Believe us your generosity will mean the world. This year’s Giving Tree list can be found in Toy Barnhaus from November 17. Simply choose a gift to buy and then drop it into the staff at Toy Barnhaus unwrapped. We will then ensure it is wrapped and delivered to the children on Christmas Day. Each year we are amazed by your generosity and hope that this year will be no different. If you would like any further information about the Christmas Giving Tree Appeal or any of the events and activities we have planned visit our website

GUEST WRITER
TERRIBLE LIE An excerpt from Gareth Endean’s debut novel, a crime thriller set on the streets of Croydon Christopher watched out the window as Gatwick rose up to meet him. He hadn’t set foot in England for over 15 years. He’d been busy with work, of course, but he’d had holidays, breaks, plenty of chances really to jump on a plane and come home. But he’d never actually done it. He hadn’t ever had the urge, to be honest. When his parents complained about never getting to see him he had paid for their flights to come out to California. He’d been born and bred in Croydon, a town that dubbed itself a mini-Manhattan, and having now managed to visit New York, Christopher knew just how erroneous that claim was. He just felt no connection to his home town anymore. He had been entirely mercenary in his reasons for moving to America, you earn a hell of a lot more money in medical research in the States than you did back home. His reasons for returning however were much more emotive. And a lot less simple to explain. Christopher shook the thoughts from his head. What was the point of running away from something if you were just going to think about it the whole time? The plane hit the tarmac with a jarring bump. Christopher placed his hand on the buckle of his seatbelt, he heard other passengers click off their harnesses but Christopher let his hand rest on the metal clasp until the plane had slowed to a stop and the seatbelt light had pinged off. He waited while the passengers beside him had removed their baggage from the overhead locker and had wedged themselves into the queue in the aisle. Christopher, in no hurry, lifted himself out of the seat and plucked the small travel bag from the locker. He pulled his iPod from the bag and scrolled to The Deftones. Now was the time to revisit them.
and turned his head in time to catch the end of the sentence. It was enough though. The man was American, which was obvious from the accent, but to be honest the oversized hat and appalling shirt gave it away too. What on earth had made Christopher think that getting away from America would mean he could get away from Americans? Christopher hated the man on sight. It wasn’t enough that he had to perpetuate the myth that all Americans were loud, brash, unthinking idiots in bad clothes with no sense of selfawareness or how to behave in public, he also had to go and announce to the world who Christopher was in the worst possible way. The Aids Murder Guy. Terrible Lie is available to buy from Amazon in either ebook or paperback format. Gareth Endean is the first, foremost and only purveyor of Cronx Noir fiction. Born and raised in Croydon, when he’s not writing he’s thinking about writing. When he is writing he’s generally thinking about his record collection. Terrible Lie is his debut novel.

With his earphones jammed firmly into his ears he could block out the shoving, impatient mass that had so recently been his co-passengers. As he watched them jostle towards the plane doors, passing the perma-smiling stewardesses, his thoughts went back to his dream of B. The memories rolled around his head inspired by the music pumping through his headphones. His awareness of the outside world was almost non-existent. So much so that he wasn’t aware of the man moving up behind him, reaching towards him and clamping a firm hand on his shoulder. “…you’re that Aids murder guy!” Christopher had plucked one of his earphones out of his ear

THE HALLS Add a personal touch to your Christmas decorations with handmade garlands and wreaths
There’s something rather satisfying about making something from scratch. Perhaps that is why crafting is enjoying something of a renaissance - less ‘make do and mend’ and more of an individual style statement.
Complimentary mince pies and some ‘Mad Lilies’ hot port will be available for sustenance and to aid the design process, and at the end of the session you can take home your finished decoration.
If you want to add a personal touch to your home this Christmas then nothing beats crafting your own decorations. Mad Lilies florists in Banstead is running a series of workshops this festive season where you can get creative and learn new floristry skills.
Learn to make a natural Christmas wreath, a beautiful fireplace garland or floral table designs.
Suitable for all levels, including novices, there will be fresh flowers and foliages on hand to work with, as well as ribbons, berries, fruits and other natural materials.

SUTTON VOICE
VOLUNTARY SERVICE We can all spare a little bit of time, says Roger Mills These requests, along with the increasing demand for www.suttonvoice.co.uk to publicise the widest possible range of events, news and views, has meant that I have invested in www.suttonvoice.co.uk to increase its opportunity to be used and seen by as many people in the borough. The website www.suttonvoice.co.uk is my voluntary service. My attempt's to put something back into the borough that I have lived in for more than 50 years. I say simply to emphasise that volunteering can come in many guises and forms. It can be as little or as much as one person or group feels that they can spare.
Sutton has an excellent tradition of voluntary service. Throughout the decades this borough’s residents have offered their support to the widest possible range of groups and societies. Current spending issues have meant that this tradition is now needed even more – in some cases to maintain services which have helped in the past to develop the community activities that are the fabric of the borough. Every week on the website www.suttonvoice.co.uk I upload requests for voluntary support. Many of those requests are responded to. In fact just last week I met sixth formers of Sutton High School who have signalled their intention to volunteer weekly throughout their school year.
16
In truth we can all spare that little bit of time – so as the appeals come and go please view the opportunities to see if you can help. Believe me you won’t regret it as you will meet new people, gain new skills and give a real benefit to our community.

A LIFETIME IN
DJ, music writer and club promoter Pete Feenstra has many strings to his bow, including a lifetime achievement award Who are your musical influences?
My musical tastes are blues influenced but I like Americana and singer-songwriters like PJ Harvey and Frank Zappa. I like rock blues and am open to a lot of different music. The music I promote is different to what I listen to at home. How did you start out as a music promoter?
I was a music librarian. I have two degrees in politics and then did a post-graduate course. I became a music librarian. In the early 80s libraries were expanding into lending not just books but albums and running events. That is how I got into booking acts. Before that I’d worked in Copenhagen where I’d seen how the public/private culture house model in the arts worked. I was given that opportunity in Hounslow and I did that for seven years. Which venues have you worked at?
I’ve worked at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, the Mean Fiddler in Harlesden and the Bottom Line in Shepherd’s Bush. You branched out on your own running a series of clubs, did you imagine they would take off in the way they did?
When I was working in Shepherd’s Bush one of the people who used to regularly come to my shows mentioned a club room at the Worcester Park Club. So I promoted shows there for 10 to 12 years with my business partner until it closed down. That’s when I was approached and asked to go to the Boom Boom Club at Sutton United. When we first walked into the room there was nothing but a dart board, a very small stage and some pigeon pens. The club chairman Bruce Elliott had the vision to see this happening. Within five years we had people like Walter Trout play there. It has become part and parcel of the tour circuit now.
L@outandabout_mag
I also promote shows in Chislehurst and Barnes as well oneoff shows in London. Is there still a passion for live blues music?
Live music is more consumed by people my age than our kids’ generation. In all the years I have been doing this - 35 years - I’ve never had a time when there has been so many great young blues bands and the unfortunate thing is that they are all playing to an audience 15 to 20 years older than they are. It’s a niche market. The Boom Boom Club in Sutton - what can people expect to see there?
Everything from international tour bands to tribute bands to rock blues and ‘heritage’ rock bands as well as up-andcoming bands who I give support slots to. It covers quite a broad spectrum.
You recently received a lifetime achievement award at the British Blues Awards 2016? Was it a surprise and how did it feel to receive the accolade?
I was in France when I got a phone call asking if I wanted to go to the Newark Blues Festival and the awards. A subsequent phone call said they would take me up there and look after me. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be back in time and they said it would be in my interest! It’s great. It’s great for the Boom Boom Club as well. Next year will be its 15th anniversary and we’ll celebrate on April 26 with a gig by The Yardbirds. Poles APART Originally used by elite cross-country skiers to train during summer months, Nordic walking is taking off on these shores. We catch up with instructor Lynn Pickering to find out more A line of walkers snaking across Nonsuch Park is a familiar sight. Look closer and you might spot an unusual addition to their kit - a pair of Nordic walking poles. “You get a lot of the same comments, like ‘ooh, you’ve lost your skis’” says Lynn Pickering jovially, “but it is all said in jest.” Lynn set up Poles Apart four years ago having trained to be a Nordic walking instructor. She runs taster sessions and classes in Nonsuch Park for those looking to learn the techniques of Nordic walking as well as longer fitness sessions for more experienced walkers. Her passion for Nordic walking is infectious as she reveals that she became hooked after watching an interview on television. “I saw an interview on the BBC about Nordic walking and thought it looked just up my street and I would give it a go. “I have always been quite an outdoor person. I cannot bear gyms. I went along because I felt I had to go to stay fit and healthy, but I didn’t like being indoors. Being in open
spaces was where I was always most relaxed. It ticked all my boxes and that’s what led me to do it.” The move towards a different way of exercising and a new career was partly influenced by having a family. Prior to the birth of her children, Lynn worked in central London and faced a lengthy commute to and from her home in Worcester Park. Fitting studying in around the children worked well and, having qualified as an accredited instructor through Nordic Walking UK, the next step was to set up Poles Apart. “The reason for changing my career was the children. I didn’t want to be tied into a position where I would have to do the hours that others wanted. I liked the idea of working my own hours,” says Lynn. “I love the Nordic walking, I love the community aspect that my clients come along and they leave with a smile on their faces. They enjoy it instead of seeing it as a chore to exercise.” Nordic walking is an activity that can be done anywhere, although it originated in Finland in the 1930s. Crosscountry skiers started to use their poles in training during the summer months when there was no snow. They discovered that as well as keeping their heart and lungs in condition it also kept their upper and lower body muscles in shape. “There is a lot more to the poles than people ever imagine,” says Lynn. “As soon as people hold the poles and start walking they can understand the benefit. The poles are a form of resistance, every single time you strike the ground with the pole you are pushing against it. They also help to propel you along increasing your speed.

LOCAL BUSINESS Nordic walking uses 90% of the body’s muscles, and burns more calories than normal walking, so you are getting a really comprehensive workout.” Nordic walking didn’t make it to the UK until early 2000. Then groups like Nordic Walking UK and British Nordic Walking have worked to make it an accessible activity for people of all ages and fitness abilities. And research has shown that as well as being a cardiovascular workout it can help people with neck, back and shoulder pain. “Once you know what you are doing it is a really rhythmic exercise. It can really strike a chord with a very different range of people,” says Lynn. “You can start off slowly with only a gentle push then you can increase it gradually over time, as you build fitness levels. You can also push it really hard. I dropped a couple of dress sizes when I first started and I have seen my body shape change. “Once you use the poles correctly the upper body does some of the work, easing the pressure on lower joints. “It’s also such a social activity. You can talk to people as you do it. It takes you away from all the other things that are going on and you can relax.”

Nordic walking If you’re heading out here’s what you need Footwear: Comfortable footwear that has some grip, suitable for varying terrain such as sand, gravel, mud. Flexible soled shoes that are breathable and waterproof are recommended. Clothing: Rapidly changing weather conditions means layers are essential that way you can add or remove clothing as the temperature dictates. Choose loose fitting clothes as you will be moving your arms and legs throughout so you don’t want to wear anything restrictive. Waterproof jackets and trousers are also a must. Water and rucksack: As you will be walking with poles you will not be able to carry anything in your hands so a rucksack is handy for carrying water, wallets or purses, hats and gloves for when it is cold, sunglasses and suncream for when it is sunny and insect spray for the evenings. Poles: Not to be confused with hiking poles, Nordic walking poles are designed and shaped to support the technique and provide a comfortable grip. The straps are left and right hand specific for comfort and control and are strong enough to withstand push-through. Poles can be adjusted for height to ensure they fit each individual correctly.

SCHOOLS
woods
DOWN IN THE
No longer are lessons confined to the classroom, out&about heads outdoors to discover how children are learning life skills through play If you go down to the woods today you will hear the sound of laughter and the hubbub of children excitedly chatting as they take part in an outdoors lesson. There is no formal lesson plan, no desks or whiteboard. Instead the children are free to roam, explore, discover, use their imaginations and play, whatever the weather. This approach to outdoor learning follows the Scandinavian ‘forest school’ model, developed in the 1950s, which placed the emphasis on early years learning on outdoor learning within the natural environment. Research has found that children attending forest schools started school with strong social skills, self-confidence and the ability to work in groups. They are also able to assess and take risks and challenges. Christopher Pryke, a trained forest school leader who runs Down in the Woods, at Warren Farm, Cheam, said the approach is very much child-led. “The basis is that it is child-led. When we are planning a session for the children I ask what topics they have been doing in class or what they are interested in and try and incorporate that into the sessions. “Last year we worked with a school where the children had been learning about the Romans. In that particular session we made a working Roman catapult out of wood we found in the woods. We then wound it up and saw how far it could throw things. “For kinesthetic learners - those who learn by doing - we try to incorporate hands on stuff because it enables them to learn better and to learn faster.” “The other other thing that forest school does differently to a conventional classroom is it allows children to play from an
24
early age outdoors. “It helps them communicate, to work as a team, to learn how to resolve issues through communication. It also helps them to learn their own limits and how to take risks. If a child wants to climb a tree so long as there is an adult nearby they can climb the tree. They will climb as far as they want to so they learn their limit. It’s a learning process for the child, we are there to facilitate.” Chris set up Down in the Woods after a successful career in finance. He took a year out and retrained as a forest school leader, partly inspired by his hobby of bushcraft. “I am one of the lucky few whose hobby has turned into a business so it doesn’t feel like work.” Now he runs term time and holiday forest school sessions on site at Cheam, from pre-school upwards, as well as working with schools in the area and home education groups. He also runs a number of bushcraft courses covering everything from bow making to a week-long Duke of Edinburgh residential course, which takes place at a 35-acre woodland site in Dorking. Chris said the skills of knowing how to build a fire, create a shelter, to know which plants to pick to eat it do not get taught today and they are skills which are invaluable. For him the best part of his job is “being able to pass on what I have learned in a way that doesn’t seem like a class and doesn’t seem like I am trying to teach. If I can help the kids who don’t get on with school in some way and send them out with some confidence then that can’t be bad.”

When it comes to our children’s education, most of us take the responsibility seriously: we want the best for them and we will do whatever it takes. Tutoring no longer has the negative association with ‘being no good’ at a subject, but is increasingly seen as a positive enhancement to a child’s learning. Moreover, a personalised approach helps develop skills in individuals to enable them to overcome difficulties in their learning, so that they achieve great results in their schoolwork, exams and life. What should I look for in a tutor?
The first thing to establish is compatibility. Are you, your child and the tutor on the same wavelength? Do you have common goals? Does the tutor provide a service that is tailored to your child’s style of learning? There are many tutors and tutoring agencies that simply work with pupils in fairly large groups, doing paper after paper without actually teaching. Millie Whizz was set up to provide an individual, holistic approach, to complement the work done in schools, because sometimes this is not enough.

LOCAL HISTORY
Life THROUGH A LENS Photographer’s catalogue provides fascinating insight into life in Edwardian Britain It is nearly 40 years since a collection of more than 10,000 glass-plate negatives was discovered in the basement of a Sutton business. The images documenting life in Edwardian times were salvaged and stored at Sutton Local Studies and Archives Centre for future preservation. There they remained largely untouched until 2014 when the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded Sutton Archives £95,900 to clean, digitise, research and catalogue the vast collection of glass-plate negatives by photographer David KnightsWhittome. Known as the ‘Photographer to the King’, David KnightsWhittome owned shops at 18 High Street, Sutton, and Station Approach, Epsom. Between 1904 and 1918 he
produced thousands of photographs of local people, places, events and institutions as well as images of three generations of the Royal Family during a seminal period in British history. In 1918, Knights-Whittome abandoned professional photography and moved away from Sutton, eventually taking up a career in local politics in Hertfordshire. For the past two years a team, largely made up of volunteers, has worked tirelessly on the Past on Glass project, culminating in a month-long exhibition at the Europa Gallery, in Sutton Central Library, this summer. Now Sutton Archives has been successful in winning a further £95,500 to complete the project, and digitise the remaining 4,000 plates in the collection. Although now there will be a shift in the focus of the research. Project officer Abby Matthews said: “The focus of our research in this phase will move to the women in the collection, looking at the impact of this seismic period in history on the everyday woman, who, sandwiched between the Victorian era and a Brave New World came to embrace the spirit of change, resourcefulness and mettle that the era handed them with aplomb. “We are still actively encouraging public research of all the subjects in our plates, but our particular emphasis will be placed on trying to uncover some of the harder to locate female subjects that have so far often eluded us. With the centenary of the award of the franchise to women over the age of 30 fast approaching, this seems like an apt and topical focus for our attention, and while we will be interested to find any pioneering suffragists in our ranks, it is more the ordinary woman that we are interested in - the women whose lives were irrevocably changed by the events of WW1 and the following years and whose stoicism, resourcefulness and resolve formed the original model for modern women today.” To find out more about the Past on Glass project visit
