Boys of Summer By Frank Adkins t was the summer of 1977. America’s Bicentennial had passed, Jimmy Carter was in the White House, and Heart’s Barracuda played endlessly on the radio. My buddy Kevin Pampuch and I were 12 years old, and we spent much of the summer riding our strippeddown bicycles on the trails through the fields and woods near our neighborhood, which sat mid-way between Newark and Wilmington just off Kirkwood Highway. It would be another year before we would graduate to dirt bikes and go-karts. One day, while exploring the trails behind St. Mark’s church and high school, we discovered an old Chevy that had been abandoned in the woods years earlier. The body was peppered with bullet holes and the windows had been blown out. Somebody had removed the engine and transmission, presumably before dumping the carcass in the woods. The caved-in roof had a gaping rust hole; time and the elements had ravaged the seats, reducing them to bare, rusty springs. I studied the grille, and when I got home, I consulted the Chilton repair manual that my father had purchased to help him service our ’63 Corvair. The Chilton manual covered domestic models from 1953-1963, and I determined that “our” Chevy was a 1953 model. The fact that we had little automotive knowledge and even less money did nothing to dampen our enthusiasm. We had each built dozens of plastic model kits, and we were adept at modifying these cars to suit our own tastes. Leftover parts from various kits found their way onto other cars; stock pre-war Ford bodies became dirt track racers while ‘50s classics became “gasser” drag race cars with blowers and multiple carburetors protruding from crudely-hacked holes in their hoods. Of course, we had to buy these models, as well as the paint and glue needed to assemble them. We each had sufficient mechanical aptitude to keep our lawnmowers running so we could earn the money we needed to buy these model kits and the related supplies. We also honed our mechanical skills and spent a fair portion of our grass cutting money keeping our bicycles going despite the 6

abuse we lavished upon them. Of course, we weren’t naïve to the fact that we had a lot to learn, but we remained steadfast in our belief that, between the two of us, we had a sufficient knowledge base to take on a project like the Chevy. It was our plan that by the time we obtained our driver’s licenses, we would have an operable car to share. Today, Kevin and I would each consider this car too far gone to revive. Truth be told, it wouldn’t have even been a good parts car, for I don’t recall any of its pieces being in a condition suitable to repair a road-going example. Furthermore, we had no idea who the legal owner was or how to obtain the necessary paperwork to own and register it. But none of that mattered. We would tackle what we could now, and we would figure out the rest as we went along. Our determination and hard work, combined with a few lucky breaks that were sure to come our way, would enable us to see this project through. Parts procurement was one of our first considerations. We knew where an engine had been discarded in a creek nearby. We didn’t know what kind of engine it was or what was wrong with it, nor did we know how we would retrieve it, but we figured it was a starting point. We also found what we thought would be a suitable transmission in a similar condition, though I’m not sure if it occurred to us that it probably wouldn’t bolt up to the engine. Our first objective, however, was to replace the roof. We reasoned that until we made the car weather-tight, the mechanicals were moot.

Fortunately, nearby sat the roof and a few other body panels from a Mercury that his grandparents had bought new. I removed the ailing push-button automatic Montclair. I recognized these sheet metal bits as such, for there was another transmission from my car, and I replaced it with a floor-shifted three-speed manual Montclair parked in the apartment complex near Kevin’s house. We measured the transmission from a Duster prior to my 16th birthday. A few months later, Kevin and Montclair roof and deemed it close enough in size to fit the Chevy. I didn’t know I removed the Powerglide automatic transmission from his Camaro and replaced it how we would come up with a windshield or any of the with a Muncie M-21 four-speed. other windows that would fit both the Chevy body and the After high school, Kevin went to college in Virginia while Montclair roof, but Kevin said he thought we could make I commuted to an automotive school in Pennsylvania. What I do remember is that we had a difference of opinion. I was intent spent our lives immersed in the automotive culture. We are no less enthusiastic on realizing our initial plan. Kevin, however, was more grounded than I was. He had about cars now than we were on the day we discovered that old Chevy. THIS IS NOT YOUR FATHER’S

Oldsmobile ... BUT IT’S CLOSE By Lou Sitaras

T

he year was 1988 and Oldsmobile had just dramatically restyled their breadand-butter car, the Cutlass, and they needed a bold statement to go with it. Something that told the motoring public that Oldsmobile had changed and they weren’t the car manufacturer they used to be. They settled on the now-famous advertising slogan This Is Not Your Father’s Oldsmobile. The meaning behind it was simple: Times have changed. Was the slogan a hit? Well, it was certainly remembered, so I guess for an advertiser that equates with success. The Oldsmobile name in my family runs back to my late grandfather, Louis Isidore Sitaras, who immigrated from Greece through Ellis Island, became a successful restaurateur in the 1940s and ‘50s, and loved to drive an Oldsmobile. Back then, Olds was known for its Rocket motor and it made the cars among GM’s most popular. From the late 1950s through the early 1970s though, his loyalty changed to Pontiac with a 1966 389-powered Catalina being the car he’s most remembered for. For his final purchase in 1974, he switched back to his favored Oldsmobile brand — a 1974 Olds Cutlass with the Rocket 350 engine. He passed away in 1980. As is tradition with many families, the children tend to follow their parents’ preferences and both my dad and his brother Jim were also restaurateurs and passionate Oldsmobile enthusiasts. My dad was always borrowing grandpop’s 1939 Olds when out with friends or on dates. In fact, in his high school yearbook was this note from his favorite girl, Mary: To Christy, the guy with the big black car. During his life, dad’s Oldsmobiles were among his favorites. The first one I remember was a 1963 Dynamic 88. It was our family car for many years as we took trips to the beach, to Lenape Park, or the occasional family picnic. The Oldsmobiles that followed included an ‘84 Cutlass Ciera, and an ‘86 Delta 88. Towards the end of dad’s life, the Chrysler minivan became his favorite vehicle.

8

An identical match of Cousin Lou’s 1970 442 convertible when he purchased it in the late 1970s.

Uncle Jim was a larger-than-life figure who loved all cars — especially flashy ones — and he even owned a used car lot, US-1 Auto Sales in Marathon Key, Fla. Oldsmobiles were always his favorites, though. Over the course of his life, he owned a 1962 Olds F-85, a 1970 Delta 88, and two Oldsmobile Toronados, a 1971 and a 1977. My uncle was a huge influence in my life and his love of automobiles became my love of automobiles. Both my dad and uncle are gone now, but their automotive legacy continues. My cousins Lou and Steve both had 1970 Oldsmobiles. Steve had a gold Cutlass convertible. Lou was shopping for his very first car but every car he liked, his Dad didn’t. They were too fast, too shabby, too hot rodded — there was always an excuse. Then one day they went to the former Van Wyk Olds in Media, Pa. The owner’s son was selling his forest green 1970 Olds 442 convertible with a 455 and a four-speed. It was idling in the dealership garage when they arrived and there was no way my cousin Lou was getting talked out of this one. The car was perfect and it was beautiful! Lou treasured the car and worked at the beach all summer to pay for it. Sadly, on one of his weekly trips home to see his girlfriend JoAnn, disaster struck. In a hurry to get home, he passed a car while on a curve. Coming in the opposite direction just then was a tractor trailer and Lou had no choice but to go to the opposite shoulder. He didn’t make it. He clipped the trailer, the truck fell on his car, and he curled up around the shifter expecting the worst. The only part on the car that wasn’t damaged was the shifter — and the driver curled around it. It was a sad end to a beautiful car, but a blessing that someone could walk away from it unscathed. And that brings us to me. Unlike my grandfather, my dad, my uncle, and my cousins, Oldsmobile blood didn’t run through my veins. The closest I came was when my dad wanted to buy me a used 1976 Cutlass Supreme in excellent condition with whitewall tires. Just a few cars down the row from that Cutlass was a 1975 Hurst Olds with T-Tops and white lettered tires. Wow! It wasn’t as nice as the Cutlass but after seeing it, I fell hard in love like a high school cheerleader had just smiled at me. Dad couldn’t understand why I’d want an older car in worse condition. I couldn’t get through to him and we left empty-handed. It wasn’t until this year, 2021, when an Oldsmobile would finally reside in my driveway.

In 1991, Oldsmobile re-introduced the Cutlass convertible after almost 20 years without one in their lineup. The car was very special because even though it shared its body with the Buick Regal and the Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile was the only marque to get a convertible. It would be the last hurrah for this once-proud brand that vanished into history by 2004. The ‘91 Olds Cutlass convertible pictured was owned by Walt and his wife Bernie from the Pittsburgh area. They were the second owners and took great pride and care of the car. It was never more than a Sunday cruiser, but they maintained it well and it was always ready to go. As soon as I saw it, I knew I would be the third owner. I went back several days later to pick it up, but in the meantime Walt called me to ask if I’d be driving it or trailering it. When I said I was going to drive it, Walt went to extraordinary measures considering the deal was already done and installed two new tires on the car because there was a touch of dry rot on the old ones. He wanted to make sure I got home safely. My parents are long gone now but for a moment, I felt as though they were watching over me. Thank you, Walt and Bernie. I’ve enjoyed owning this Cutlass Supreme convertible and especially enjoyed driving my granddaughter Sophia and her friend Aubree slowly around the neighborhood as they practiced their homecoming parade poses. Eventually, this very special Olds will be heading to Florida where my cousin Steve will be the new caretaker. The brand is gone now as today’s drivers favor makes such as Hyundai, Kia, and so on, but the ad campaign still rings true. Yes, this isn’t my father’s Oldsmobile, but the memories, the feelings, and the pride I have while driving it are the same as when my grandfather was driving his ‘39 Olds.

This was Cousin Lou’s 442 after an accident left a tractor trailer on top of it. He miraculously walked away after kicking out the rear window.

This year’s theme is Dream Rides and Sports Cars and guests will have the ability to view more than 500 antique and restored cars that date from the mid-1990s to the early 20th century. Highlights of the day include a vehicle parade, motoring music, a video tribute to automotive innovation and pedal car racing. 1956 Chevrolet Corvette

One of the Car Show’s unique aspects is that this is the only time guests are allowed to drive through Hagley’s Powder Yard on the lower property. This pathway is typically reserved for foot traffic and Hagley vehicles. During the ride, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Brandywine while traveling to the upper property where the show is held. This year’s featured car is a ’60 Corvette convertible owned by Tim Stone of Broomall, Pa. Stone spotted the car while delivering mail as a postal worker, but it took him more than a decade of polite- but-persistent persuasion to convince the owner to sell it to him. “His home was on my route for a while, but after I changed routes I continued to mail him letters asking him if he was ready yet to sell me the car,” said Stone, who has been attending the Hagley Car Show for about a decade. Stone said it took him 10 years to completely restore the vehicle, but today he drives it regularly. “It’s not one of those you have to trailer and such,” said Stone. “I drive it as much as I can. It practically goes up to Valley Forge Park on its own.” Car registration is $20 and available through August 16, or whenever the field is full. Discounts for Hagley members and the registration fee will be waived for pre1925 vehicles. For individuals, advanced online tickets are $8/adults, $4/children. At the door, $10/adults, $5/children. BELLANCA AIRFIELD MUSEUM SHOW SALUTES

Austin-Healey By Don Mc Donald Don Mc Donald in his 1962 Austin-Healey MK 3000 MK II Tri-Carb Roadster. He’s pictured here on his way to the Hagley Car Show. Mc Donald has owned this vehicle since 1971.

H

ere is a little history on the Austin-Healey, which will be the marque for this year’s car show at Bellanca Airfield Museum (2 Centerpoint Blvd., New Castle) on Sat., Sept. 11. Austin-Healey was a British sports car maker established in 1952 through a joint venture between the Austin division of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and the Donald Healey Motor Company (Healey), a renowned automotive engineering and design firm. Leonard Lord represented BMC and Donald Healey his firm. BMC merged with Jaguar Cars in 1966 to form British Motor Holdings (BMH). Donald Healey left BMH in 1968 when it merged into British Leyland. Healey then joined Jensen Motors, which had been making bodies for the “Big Healeys” since their inception in 1952, and became their chairman in 1972. Austin-Healey cars were produced until 1972 when the 20-year agreement between Healey and Austin came to an end. The Austin-Healey was extensively raced by the Donald Healey Motor Company in Europe at Le Mans and at Sebring in the U.S., in classic rallies by the BMC competitions department, and was recognized from the very beginning by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). Healey models raced in club racing in D, E, and F production classes, winning national championships in both D and E production. The last Big Healey to win an SCCA National Championship was the class E Production Austin-Healey 100-6 driven by Alan Barker at the Daytona ARRC in 1965.

In 1953, a special streamlined Austin-Healey set several land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The name Austin is now owned by Nanjing, which bought the assets of MG Rover Group (British Leyland’s successor company) out of bankruptcy in 2005. After Donald Healey sold his original business, Donald Healey Motor Company, the Healey brand was registered to a new firm, Healey Automobile Consultants, which the Healey family sold to HFI Automotive in 2005. I have owned my Healey since college. Only 5,-096 of the 1962 BT7 MK 3000 Mark II Tri Carb roadsters were produced. 1962 was the last year for the roadster where the top and side curtains come completely off. The tonneau cover protects the car from the elements. When caught in a rainstorm, the driver is exposed to the elements. The cover has a zipper between the two seats. If a passenger is not in the car, you can snap that side of the car and secure it. The rear trundle seats are also covered by the cover. The year 1963 was the first time the Austin-Healey became available with roll up windows and a convertible top — the BJ7 Model. When I get behind the wheel, I feel 25 again. The roar of the exhaust and winding through the gears is always a fun experience. Thank you, Donald Healey, for designing such a fun car to drive and own.

EVENT SPOTLIGHTS

Bobbitt Car Cruise

14

Brigantine Lions Car Show

1955 was a very memorable year. Among the many events of that year: Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states, respectively, and TV shows like Bonanza debuted on television. It was also the year that Bobbitt Auto Sales was established in Salem, N.J. and it is still in business today. Teamed with the South Jersey Region Antique Auto Club of America, the Bobbitt dealership held its monthly cruise, which saw over 100 cruisers come out to share an evening. It’s really a cool happening when a dealership has 62 years of business. That dealership also displays its appreciation of classic and specialty rides when it hosts a car cruise.

The Jersey shore is home to many great communities. One of the those places is the town of Brigantine. This oceanside town recently hosted a car show that was for the benefit of the Seeing Eye Dog Program. Hosted by the Brigantine Lions Club at the Brigantine Community Center, this pre-1980 show brought out nearly 60 cars of all makes. There were also some vendors to check out, too. Classic rides coming for a great cause at the Jersey shore always equals a great day.

Fielder’s Pub Car Show

America has many things that exemplify the spirit of our great land. Take a friendly neighborhood sports pub, mix in some great food, and add about 150 cruisers. That’s the Fielder’s Pub Car Show. Hosted by a club that is no stranger to creating fun events, the Blacktop Villains hit a home run with this successful inaugural event. Located on the White Horse Pike in Hammonton, N.J., Fielder’s is a great location to share the great American pastime of enjoying an outing at a sports pub and checking out rides of all persuasions. — Text by Ben Notaro, photos by Robert Sliwecki

Red, White and Blueberry Car Show Hammonton, N.J. has the title of the “Blueberry Capital of the World” and that brings with it the annual Blueberry Festival. If an event is about this delicious little berry, then it’s going to be in Hammonton. Everything is available from muffin and ice cream, etc. to their famous blueberry pancake breakfast. One component of this event is the car show hosted by Cruisin’ Classics Car Club. This year’s show saw over 200+ rides come out to enjoy the day. The Hammonton High grounds were teaming with cars and spectators. The Cruisin’ Classics crew staged a fun time on this 35th celebration year of cars, good vibes and all things blueberry. Everyone will agree the Hammonton festival has all things blueberry as well a dedicated car club that combine to make for a great summer day’s outing. — Text and Photos by Ben Notaro

Ocean City Car Show Turns 66 Longevity for a car event is a special milestone. Well, there is a fine event that has been in the books for 66 years. The 66th Annual Ocean City Dave Blyler & Herb Godfrey Memorial Antique Auto Show & Boardwalk Parade is one of those shows that has passed the test of time. The show is held on the Tabernacle grounds in the seaside community of Ocean City, N.J. Presented by the Jersey Cape Region AACA, the nearly 300 participating car owners enjoyed a day of Jersey shore hospitality and even got to cruise the famed OCNJ boardwalk for the balance of the event. Car shows have a way of recalling memories of days gone by. I recall 47 years ago when I attended a car show as a participant for the very first time. It was this very show and being a participant in the show that allowed fond memories to be rekindled.

CRUISING 101 H

i Gang: Well, shows and cruises are happening again. Boy, were they missed! Summer is here, and the temps are in the 90s, so make sure cold water is available along with some shade. It’s the right thing to do. Also, remember that our hobby members are getting older. I know because I turned 70 this July (didn’t ever think I’d see that when I was in my 20s; to us then 40 was a “dinosaur”). So if at all possible, providing a handicap parking area at your event would be nice. At one time I could walk “Summer Carlisle” twice in one day, including “The Hill.” Those days are gone. Today, I’d be lucky to make it to a bench. We are all getting older and many of us can’t do what we used to. You know what they say about “The Golden Years.” Blah, Blah, Blah. I’m looking forward to some events coming up, such as the Riverview Park Cruise Night on July 30 in Pennsville, NJ. This is a great event, so get there early. Another event I plan to attend to is an All GM Event at “Racks” in Turnersville, NJ. It takes place on Aug 8 and is hosted by The Hot Rod Garage. Finally I’d like to mention a cruise going on at a place where I kinda grew up — Fort Mott State Park in Pennsville. Rocky and his crew put on a huge show there every year. This one is set for Aug. 21. Yep, it’s nice having events again. Remember, get your events listed. If you have a problem, we are there to help you. Call the office (302.655-6483) or me and we will do whatever we can, Plus, remember advertising pays for the mag. See you at the cruises, if I can find a parking place!

SHIFTIN’GEARS By Ben Notaro • red63vetnj@comcast.net

I

I was fortunate enough to have been born at a time when I was able to see the development of the automobile from simply a mode of transportation to a personal statement. Most cars in the late 1940s and early 1950s were rather conservative in their nature. Yes, there were guys out there were modifying their cars to go faster and look more unique, and there were some performance cars that the manufacturers made to “up” the horsepower from the so-called norm. But by the time I was a teenager in the mid to late 1960s, the evolution of the car seemed to take off big time and the horsepower race was combined with the introduction of the pony car and the all-out muscle car. Suddenly these cars were spawning not only a new generation of vehicle but a new generation of car enthusiast. There were those whose car marquee camps suddenly made one a Bowtie, Mopar or Blue oval, guy or gal. Yes, these terms representing Chevy, Chrysler and Ford were now part of the new car owners and yes there were nicknames for Pontiac, Oldsmobile and other makes of rides, too. The 1970s saw the fast and powerful rides it a decline as a result of insurance premiums and a gasoline crunch. It did not end the need for fast and cool, it set things in motion for the next phase. As we segue into the new world order of cars, performance and uniqueness is still available with those of us who cherish names like Challenger, Corvette, Camaro and Mustang. The other rides of yore have now been relegated to the books and articles of cars from yesterday. So, as this senior looks at the next batch of new performance and personal rides we head into the age of the electric car. Well, I must admit that I am not fully sold on this type of motivation to propel a car, but it’s the next phase in the development in transportation. When one reads about legendary dragracers like Don Garlits piloting an electric rail dragster at nearly 200 miles per hour, it is seeing automotive history unfolding before our eyes and reminding us that we car enthusiasts have a lot of stories to tell in the “I remember when” phase of our lives. When one looks at history, people doubted this new-fangled invention called the horseless carriage would replace the horse. Well, going from horses to electric cars (yes electric cars have been around for a long time, too) and seeing some of this development in our lifetime is really a special thing in our lives. Department of Recovery: Car events are on the rebound. Enjoy Department of Energy: Horse to internal combustion engine to electric — what’s next? Department of Human Resources: It’s a hobby, it’s a passion. But most of all, cruising and car events are about people.
