= Bryan Rash has had his hands in every aspect of the car hobby — from racing to running a car club to managing a performance center. And he still enjoys getting under the hood.
Sometimes, Letting Go Is the Right Choice
By Frank Adkins Photos by Joe Grace
Bryan Rash built a masterpiece, then sold it for the greatest prize of all
T
o many high-performance car enthusiasts in northern Delaware, Bryan Rash needs no introduction. He has raced often at Cecil County Dragway for decades, and he has presided over two local car clubs, Blue Diamond Classic Chevys and Cruisers for Christ Christian Car Club. In addition, he managed the NuCar Chevrolet Performance Center from its beginning in 1991 until 2006, and he has owned and managed his own auto repair shop, Peak Performance Automotive in Newark since 2009. In addition to his automotive endeavors, he is a devoted husband and family man.
6
Under his leadership, the Cruisers for Christ Christian Car Club hosted car shows at local churches in Delaware, but it also repaired and donated cars to families in need. “This was one of the most rewarding times in my life,” said Rash. Rash attended the Automotive Training Center in Exton from 1981 until 1983. While enrolled there, he met his wife, Heather, who was still in high school. After graduation, they traveled to Arizona together to visit her mother. “We got engaged at the Philadelphia airport,” he said. Arizona agreed with the young couple, and the decided to relocate there. “We stayed with her mom for a month. Then, within a week, we got married, found an apartment, I found a job, and she got signed up for college.” At the time, Rash was 20 and Heather was 19. “We got married on my lunch hour. Since I had just started a new job, I didn’t feel right asking for time off. “ Eventually, the couple moved back to Delaware. “I started working at NuCar Chevrolet in 1988. In 1991, the NuCar Performance Center opened, and I managed it for the next 15 years.” He also worked on the pit crew of dealership owner Dave Greytak’s blown, nitro-burning ’38 Chevy coupe. During this time, Rash always had a project or two going in his shop at home, and his work at the Performance Center kept him well connected with other local car owners, builders, and racers. One day he met with a customer who had a ’67 Chevy II project car. The two struck up a deal, and the Chevy II moved to Rash’s possession in exchange for his ’63 Corvette convertible project car. The Chevy II had a solid body, good interior, and nice paint, but it was sold without an engine or rear axle. Heather was on board with this latest build. “She grew up around cars. Her father owned Shadetree Automotive.” Located in Marshallton, Shadetree Automotive has specialized in imports for more than 40 years. Heather has also owned a few fast cars of her own, including a Torch Red ’96 Z-28 with a six-speed manual transmission. Rash built the Chevy II to his liking. He installed a 12-bolt rear axle, which eventually housed 4.56 gears. Inside, he added an eight-point roll bar and fivepoint safety harnesses for the front seat occupants. It already had a Muncie four-speed transmission. For motivation, he started with a 350 block and had its cylinders bored 0.030-inch oversize. Then he filled it with good internals including Keith Black hypereutectic pistons, LT1 powdered rods with ARP bolts, a forged steel crankshaft, and a .595/.596 lift hydraulic roller camshaft. Ultimately, the Chevy II posted quarter mile times of 11.60 seconds at 119 miles per hour. “I launched it at 5200 RPM and shifted at 7,000,” he said. “But the best thing about it was that you could jump in it at any time and take it for a ride. My wife and I drove it to both the spring and fall cruises in Ocean City, Md. for about three years. It drove well on the street.” Meanwhile, the Rashes wanted to start a family. Working through an adoption agency, they assembled a portfolio intended to provide prospective birth mothers with some insight about who they were. “For one mother, it finally came down to another couple and us. But when she looked at the pictures we had provided, she chose us.” Those pictures were of Bryan and Heather standing in front of the Chevy II, which was still under construction. “When she saw the car, she knew she wanted us to raise her son.” As the pregnancy progressed, the Rashes remained involved. “Heather went to the doctor’s appointments with the birth mother. When Ryan was born, we were there, and we brought him home from the hospital.”
Delaware’s Bryan Rash is still building cars while managing Peak Performance Automotive.
Rash added another harness to the rear seat of the Chevy II which secured Ryan’s car seat. “He loved riding in the car as long as we were moving. Whenever we stopped at a traffic light, he would cry. But when the light turned green and we started moving again, he would laugh.” Six years later, they adopted a two-year old girl named Amy. “A woman in our church had a sister who had been involved in a serious car accident and was in a coma,” he said. “She asked for help from the church members. We agreed to babysit Amy for an extended time, which eventually led to our adopting her. It took four years for the adoption to be finalized. “Adoption is expensive, especially if you work through an adoption agency,” Rash said. “The Chevy II helped us to adopt our son, but it also helped us to adopt our daughter. I sold it in order to raise the money we needed to pay for the adoption. So really, the car helped us to adopt both kids and to create our family.” Today, Ryan and Amy are 22 and 17 respectively. “Ryan enjoys sports, and he plays football and basketball,” Rash said. “Although he doesn’t enjoy getting his hands greasy, he has a need for speed, just like I do. His first car was a Murray Dip Side pedal car, which came as an unpainted, disassembled kit.” Father and son built it and had it painted by the NuCar Chevrolet body shop. “It was professionally painted to match Dave Greytak’s racecar—white with flames, and Viper Red inside. “Amy is hell on wheels, whether she’s on an ATV or anything else! She used to ride on the back of my Harley from the time she was eight years old, and she was really upset when I sold it. Nowadays she loves going to Cecil County Dragway, either with us or with her friends.” Today, the Rash family is still building cars. Currently, Bryan is building a ’64 Nova resto-mod for a customer in his shop at home, and he has a ’99 Jeep of his own waiting for his attention. In the meantime, he and Amy are building a ’95 Jeep for her. “She replaced the fuel tank, installed the lift kit, and coated the inside with liquid bed liner. She is chomping at the bit for me to turn it over to her.” Although the Rashes’ Chevy II is gone, the role it played in their family cannot be overstated. Consequently, it will long hold its place in their hearts.

GENERATIONS
A passion passed down helps keep the hobby alive By Lou Sitaras
W
hen participating in a local car show, I find no greater joy than seeing different generations of the same family enjoy a day of sunshine and classic cars. Many times, it’s father and son or grandfather and grandson. Sometimes it’s father and daughter or big brother and little brother. Whatever the relation, it’s heartwarming to see the knowledge and passion of classic cars being passed down from one generation to another. In honor of Father’s Day this year, Cruising Magazine begins a three-part series acknowledging the bond with these different generations and what led them to this path in their lives. After all, it’s this younger generation who will be tasked with caring for these vehicles as time marches forward. So, with that in mind, following is our first installment of Generations.
8
JOHN AND MIKE SLOTWINSKI John Slotwinski (Zoomie) is the patriarch of a classic car family and has been an enthusiast from the time he was a young boy. He’s a member of several different car clubs, including the Broken Rods and Car Show Team/ Delco Cars & Bikes. Zoomie took auto mechanics courses at Chester High School and has owned many remarkable vehicles over the years, but the one that made the biggest impression on him was his dad’s 1956 Buick Special. It was a car he loved from the moment he laid eyes on it; he dreamed of owning one himself someday. Dreams do come true and these days, Zoomie can be found at local events throughout the Delaware Valley with his beautiful and distinctive 1956 Buick Special. You will also find his stepson, Will Briddes, alongside him. Zoomie’s love of classic cars is second to none and I’m pleased to say that love is shared by his son, Mike. Mike was saddled with physical disabilities at a young age and forced to learn to drive with his left foot. It was a challenge, but one that he mastered. Then one day while in shop class, a unique car came in that didn’t have that annoying hump on the floor that made left foot driving so difficult. That car was the rear-engine Chevrolet Corvair. Mike was hooked. He had found a classic car he could drive with ease. Over the years, he’s owned many variations of this remarkable car that Ralph Nadar disliked so much. Today he owns a 1961 Corvair Lakeside station wagon and a 1962 Corvair Rampside truck and regularly attends the annual National Corvair Convention with his family. How much does Mike love Corvairs? He bestowed his son, Mike Jr., with the middle name of “Vair.” Adding to all of this is the fact that Mike (“Vair”) attends Delaware Tech and has taken shop classes from Cruising Magazine’s very own Frank Adkins. Adkins has made it a mission in his life to teach the younger generation about cars and this is a great example of his work in action. Zoomie, Mike, Mike Jr., and Will. All four men have inherited a passion for classic cars that started with Zoomie’s Dad driving home a ‘56 Buick Special. Today, Zoomie has a four-car garage that can easily hold eight cars with lifts, and it has a sitting area where friends can come for car talk. The walls are adorned with many car memories and mementos, including a few of Broderick Crawford driving his 1956 Buick Special from the TV show Highway Patrol. The legacy of this car family is sealed and will continue for many generations.
DAVE AND CADANCE KELSO Dave Kelso is a guy I compare to Steve McQueen. He’s the “King of Kool” and can often be found on a Harley Davidson motorcycle cruising the backroads of America. When he’s not on a bike, he’s behind the wheel of a 1970 mint green Dodge pickup truck — usually with a motorcycle in the bed of it. Dave recently made an appearance on Cruisin’ 92.1 FM where he talked about his love of classic cars, the people behind the hobby, and his family including his daughter Cadance (Cadie). Dave is an accomplished Aston Township historian and probably best known for hosting the Sundance Saloon Car Show in Aston, Pa. He’s also hosted “Back the Blue” events in Aston and Lower Chichester. Dave’s wife Lori and his daughter Cadie are always there with him
Top: Young Cadie Kelso accepting her very first award for her dad, Dave Kelso (standing behind her). Below: Dave Kelso and Cadie today with his 1970 Dodge Camper Special.
working the registration table and helping to keep the many participants and spectators happy. From a very young age, Cadie has amassed a tremendous amount of knowledge when it comes to classic cars, the people who own them, and the events they attend. In Dave’s own words: “Cadie and I have been attending car shows together since she was born. It was important to me that she learned about camaraderie, dedication and hard work. These are all attributes that make you successful in our hobby. She’s learned those things over the years and made many long-lasting personal connections…people that still remember her sitting in her car seat in our ‘61 Dodge. I’m proud to say she’s 18 years old now, graduating with honors, and attending West Chester University in the Fall.” Men or women, boys or girls, it doesn’t matter. As Dave said, the hobby isn’t just about cars, it’s about the people who drive the cars…the people who spend money to attend events.…the people who buy parts and services. It’s about them. It’s about us. Cruising Magazine will be featuring more car families throughout the year so be sure to pick up a copy. Until then, keep on cruising — from generation to generation. 9

Cars and Coffee
with South Jersey Classics The season opener for the South Jersey Classics Cars and Coffee events started with a crowd that not only filled the business facility parking area, it spilled into the street. Cruisers came out to a cool morning that was filled with the aroma of hot coffee, fresh donuts and even Mr. Softee treats. All of this and a great spirit of cruising camaraderie -- all compliments of Shawn Wark and Ed Van Hee, proprietors of this cool classic car emporium. There were rides of all makes and persuasions and that is a sure indicator of the fun that will greet the cruisers in the 2022 season. All this fun set the pace for another “endless summer” of cruising fun. Pharoahs Car Club of South Jersey Cruise Some clubs have been in existence for many years. They have withstood the test of time and continue to devote their energies to preserving the fun of enjoying special cars. A large organization that is nation/international is the Pharoahs Car Club. One of the many chapters of the club is based in the southern New Jersey area. These members decided to have an old-fashioned cruise by spreading the word to meet and show up for a few hours of cruising fun. The cruise was held at the Pep Boys Auto center parking lot in Glassboro, N.J. The event was open to all cruisers and featured trucks, rat rods, street rods and customs. Monday in Mantua Car Cruise Mondays open the work week for many and after a hard day at work, it’s good to have a place to unwind. If you live near Mantua, N.J., you just hop into your ride and head out to the Toll House Plaza for their Monday night cruises. This inaugural event saw 60 rides come to relax on a weekday opener. The nice thing with hosting a cruise at a plaza is the selection of stores — from pizzerias to retail shopping. The Mantua Car Cruise will continue on Mondays into October, with start time at 6 p.m. It’s a great way to start the week. — Text by Ben Notaro Photos by Bob Sliwecki 12

GREATER WOODBINE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 11th Annual
SHIFTIN’GEARS By Ben Notaro • red63vetnj@comcast.net
H
ow about the price of gasoline? There, I’ve started my column with a topic that has an impact on our hobby. That impact can only be interpreted by each individual and their personal application of gasoline in relation to participating in the hobby. For the record, this column will NOT be about politics and the reason gasoline prices are high. It’s about how prices will affect our hobby and some of the comments I have heard on this topic. If you are reading this publication, you are most likely a car enthusiast. I would say many of you are preparing to attend your favorite cruise or show and now the prospect of filling your cruiser’s tank may be more than the year before. Many car owners have their own thoughts concerning the impact of gas prices on our hobby. Here are a few observations: 1. Some cruisers may cut back on traveling with the cost to fill-up your car now double from a year ago. 2. Some think car shows should cut their prices to help the cruisers economically. 3. Some suggest offering gasoline gift cards instead of trophies. 4. Many cruisers say they will stay local and reconsider attending longdistance events. 5. Another thought…just continue enjoying the hobby and to heck with gas prices. Like any hobby, people will make their own decisions on how much they want to spend to pursue it. The size of your engine and the gas it consumes will likely be one of your biggest deciding factors. In the end, it will be up to each cruiser to decide how much increased gas prices are going to impact their cruising decisions. Department of Energy: Request research into converting all politicians’ words into fuel.
