LIFTING UP SOUTH FLORIDA’S LGBTQ COMMUNITY

Peace in the Midst of a Storm

1

Dear Readers, As of this writing, the death toll from the earthquakes in Turkey-Syria has passed 46,000 people.2 That’s over 4 times the city of Wilton Manors (pop. 11,431)3 I cannot fathom the devastation that has taken place there. I can’t comprehend the people that are suffering. Or get my mind around the buildings, roads, schools, hotels, offices, and hospitals that have been demolished. Or understand the time of anguish of the people that have been found, days buried under concrete, still alive. How do we make sense of these kinds of natural disasters? They are and always have been part of Earth, our only world of existence. Even here in Florida, we have our familiar history of both natural and manmade disasters. But I have learned that no matter what comes, there is always peace amidst the storm. There is always an answer. There is a new day. Something may be taken today, but tomorrow can bring newness of life. For a time, I grieved over what I thought was the greatest loss I ever had. I call it the darkest chapter of my life. But I made it through. This month, OutClique magazine features SunServe. If you are going through a tough time, reach out to them. They have numerous services that can help or refer you to someone who can. Don’t suffer alone. There is hope. There is peace. And yes, there is peace even for those suffering the loss in the earthquakes of Turkey-Syria. May happiness be abounding.4 Dr. Steven5 1 Stanley, C. City Paves Way for Revitalization of Historic Northwest Community In February, we marked Black History Month and paid tribute to the generations of African-Americans, their struggle with adversity to achieve equal rights in American society and recognition for the contributions that they have made to our nation’s progress. In Fort Lauderdale, we hosted the Sistrunk Parade and Festival in honor of the occasion. Black history, after all, is American history and Fort Lauderdale history. It is our responsibility to pick up the mantel and continue to strive towards a more just world. One thing that we’ve been undertaking in Fort Lauderdale is the effort to revitalize the historic heart of the black community, the Northwest area. This had been the vision of later leaders, such as longtime commissioner Carlton Moore, who engineered new and creative ways to fulfill this vision. In 1995, the city created a redevelopment area that encompasses the Northwest as well as Progresso Village and Flagler Village and has been spending specially designated tax money there to make improvements. Our strategic redevelopment plans are focused on

8 | OutClique.com

expanding economic opportunities and fostering a vibrant environment for businesses and residents. The dramatic growth of Flagler Village has brought in additional tax revenue that has allowed the city to pick up the pace of work in the Northwest and we have many successes to show for it. One area of significance has been to nurture affordable housing. For instance, the city gave $7 million toward the construction of Six13 that consists of 142 units of workforce housing and 8,300 square feet of retail space. Other housing efforts that have been funded include a 90unit tower offering affordable senior housing and a new home for the Pantry of Broward, a mixed-use housing and commercial project by Wright Dynasty, a planned 100-unit affordable senior housing project by the Housing Trust Group and Mount Hermon AME Church, and the West Village project for 455 rental units and more than 17,000 square feet of commercial space.

The city also has been helping expand commercial and office opportunities in the area.

pledged over $10 million in community redevelopment funds to cover about half the cost of construction.

We assisted in the completion of the Sistrunk Marketplace, which retrofitted an old warehouse into a food hall and the Pharmacy, the site of an old pharmacy that now partially serves as headquarters for Florida Prime Acquisitions.

The facility provides a new level of service to surrounding residents with a focus on youth development, business growth, community outreach and athletic activities. It’s a magnificent place with an outdoor swimming pool, a gym with a basketball court and wellness center, a child-care center with after-school programming and a black box theater for performances.

Hoover Canvas Products, a local business for the past 70 years, received $1.1 million in assistance to increase their manufacturing output and hire more workers. The Fuse Group received $420,000 for the Provident in the 600 block of NW 9th Avenue to turn a deteriorated building into Class A retail space. The Blue Tree Café has since decided to locate in the building.

Beyond just assisting with the construction of the Y’s new home, the city has provided $1 million to Broward College so it could offer free community workforce education and training at the facility.

And, work is underway on Thrive Progresso, where warehouses that were once used for auto repair and paint shops are being rehabbed into office and retail purposes that have a distinctive artsy theme.

We hope that with the city-financed improvements, Sistrunk will experience a rebirth as a bustling and exciting place for people to live and work while remaining true to its rich and important heritage. We are well on the way to accomplishing this goal.

The creation of additional amenities has been another focus of the city’s redevelopment efforts around Sistrunk.

In closing, there have been troubling developments at the state level that strike at the importance of Black History Month.

New restaurant ventures such as Smitty’s Wings, the B&D Trap Restaurant, the Jamaican Jerk Shack and Donna’s Caribbean Restaurant received grants to help with their construction and opening.

We have witnessed efforts to kill an optional Advance Placement African American Studies curriculum. When outrage erupted, the push was changed from outright eliminating the AP curriculum to diluting it through the elimination of critical components.

The Jack and Jill Elementary School opened with $2.5 million in city aid. The campus at 1315 W. Broward Blvd. includes early childhood education, after-school programs and a summer camp. They are focusing on children of high-need working families who are fighting to break the cycle of poverty. Other grants have gone to the Omegas In Broward and the Robert Bethal American Legion Post 220 to modernize their buildings. Of course, the crown jewel has been the new L.A. Lee YMCA-Mizell Center. This long-sought project opened in late May and could not have happened without the city’s assistance. We gave the Y a long-term lease of public land at $1 a year and Content Courtesy of Mayor Dean Trantalis

This follows on the heels of the Stop WOKE Act that restricted the discussion of diversity issues in public schools, colleges and workplaces. As a society, I believe we need to allow students to learn about issues surrounding race, equality and diversity so we can learn from the past and be able to think critically as citizens. That is how we progress as an inclusive and accepting society. And this commission is prepared to act when necessary to push back any attempts to turn the clock back to when discrimination and social injustice were once acceptable. That will not happen again. Helping the Community Through Your Business When it comes to doing business nowadays, the topic of corporate social responsibility is often a part of the conversation. Corporate social responsibility, or CSR, is a management concept where companies integrate social and environmental issues into their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders (customers, partners, investors). For those who are still unsure as to why CSR is important, it is because consumers want to do business with brands and businesses who are doing more than just selling a product or service. Consumers want to invest their money in brands that are making a difference. According to a 2021 study by Vice Media Group 82% of consumers make purchases with an objective or purpose in mind. When we talk about objective or purpose, we refer to what consumers want to contribute to in a social way when making a purchase. No matter what size of business you currently own, it is important to evaluate in which ways you can implement a corporate social responsibility strategy. Five Ways of Establishing Corporate Social Responsibility in your Business 1. Donate your time - organize your company to donate time to a social cause everyone agrees on. 2. Invest in social and environmental initiatives support initiatives by donating money or creating an event or fundraiser that supports defined causes. 3. Practice ethical work - identify ethical problems in your trade and commit to fight against these problems by establishing good practices in your company.

Attract socially and environmentally conscious customers.

Reduce operational and production expenses by implementing eco-friendly recycling models and optimizing the use of raw materials.

Have employees more motivated and satisfied with being part of the company. The creativity levels of the work team also increase as they feel free to contribute their ideas to long-term innovation.

Encourage the creation of strategic alliances that can produce new and innovative solutions, services, or products.

To address this growing sector of the marketplace, BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust SM partnered with local BBBs to launch the BBB4Good initiative to support and elevate purpose-driven businesses. In partnership with our network of BBBs located in communities throughout North America, BBB4Good works to: Empower consumers to identify purpose-driven businesses; spotlight, recognize and support organizations that integrate social impact into their business plans, and expand the growth of this powerful new marketplace sector via new research and partnerships with like-minded organizations that are providing critical support to purpose-driven businesses. To recommend a purpose-driven business or to identify as one, or simply learn more about BBB4Good visit: www.bbb.org/bbb4good

4. Promote philanthropy - create your own method of social change by establishing a cause of your own, or you can pledge part of your earnings to that cause. 5. Be environmentally conscious in your business recycle, reduce the use of natural resources, and commit to reducing your environmental impact. Benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility •

Strengthen your image by receiving positive publicity.

SunServe Tony Lima, CEO You have to walk before you can dance, at least according to SunServe's social calendar. March 2023 is shaping up to be their most significant month of the year with two major events on back-to-back weekends. OutClique magazine had a chance to talk with Tony Lima, SunServe’s CEO. The Florida AIDS Walk is Saturday, March 18, 2023, followed by their Studio 54-themed Glam Gala on Friday, March 24, 2023. And topping it all off, SunServe is announcing a new partnership mid-March that will bring their services to thousands of people across the state of Florida. This could be both the biggest and most hectic month in SunServe's history while also being their most impactful and triumphant. Progress SunServe's work is extensive. Their youngest client is just three years old while the oldest is likely a centenarian. They help people facing food and housing insecurity. They provide therapy, psychiatry, and life coaching. They help people dealing with substance use disorder, offer vital services to the transgender community, provide mental healthcare and life coaching to LGBTQ Youth, most recently opening a home for those LGBTQ youth that are homeless. The organization also has a specialized education and advocacy department that trains corporations, police departments, educational institutions, and other organizations on LGBTQ sensitivity and inclusion of the transgender community. SunServe also operates the first-of-its-kind senior daycare center. Their main office is in the heart of Wilton Manors and always has food on hand. If a client comes in hungry, he/she/ they are fed as they wait for service. People seeking help can receive treatment or care immediately, regardless of their ability to pay. Most recently, through a partnership with Project Soar, SunServe has added an assisted living option for substance use disorder clients, which currently houses eight people. Oftentimes, mental health issues are the core problems that affect our communities. By continuing to improve and expand their programs and hiring the top mental health and social work professionals in South Florida, Lima says

SunServe will be able to provide mental health and case management beyond Broward County's borders. "Our work for the last 20-plus years has mostly been relegated to Broward County. Our footprint is expanding significantly. My goal is to continue to grow our organization so that we can provide services not only in Broward but expand our work into Miami-Dade and Palm Beach. SunServe will soon be able to serve more people in our most marginalized communities throughout South Florida." Walk the Walk The first big event for SunServe year after year is the Florida AIDS Walk. Financially speaking, the annual event kicks off SunServe's most crucial week of the year. The walk draws thousands of participants on dozens of teams representing several non-profit organizations to Fort Lauderdale Beach Park for a walk and music festival. Team SunServe will be bigger than ever this year. The organization has spent much of the last year reaching out to make new ties in the community and cement old ones. This year they have enlisted other civic-minded groups and businesses. Bears of South Florida, Peak Fitness, Center for Spiritual Living, Cheer Fort Lauderdale, and GYM Bar are just some of the teams fundraising under SunServe's umbrella. "These are organizations out in the community serving different purposes," Lima said. "These folks volunteer and fundraise under our moniker for Florida AIDS Walk to benefit SunServe." By partnering with SunServe for the walk, these groups are beginning what could be a long-time allyship. "Part of what we're trying to do with these partners is enlisting them to be ambassadors for SunServe. It's not just a means of raising more money; it's a means of expanding our ambassador circle to, in a simple way, explain the work we do and bring more community members in for services and care. Our friends at these organizations are committed to SunServe's mission and are very invested in the community. When our message is amplified, we can reach more individuals needing support."

OutClique.com | 49

While much of SunServe's budget comes from grants and corporate sponsorships, those come with strings attached. Money from the Florida AIDS Walk is used to fill in the gaps and cover the overhead costs that these grants leave unfunded. "The wonderful thing about the money from AIDS Walk is that it goes to our general fund. As an organization, we rely on grants that support our services. But all of those grants have limitations," Lima said. For example, one grant is targeted to help provide housing to people living with HIV/AIDS but not negative patients. Money from the walk can go into a fund to help find housing for them. It's all part of SunServe's plan to help anyone, anytime. "We don't turn people away. If in any way, shape, or form they don't meet the requirements of the programs we are offering, we still help. Everyone receives services at SunServe despite the ability to pay." One program Lima and his team are particularly excited about is a new homeless shelter for LGBTQIA+ youth. "The homeless shelter brings our youth program full circle. Now we can house the most vulnerable members of our community and give them a little bit of a head start." They also help kids organize their finances and they receive mental health care and case management. The residents work, and SunServe takes a portion of their earnings and sets it aside as a 'nest egg.' The money is there waiting when the kids are ready to go out on their own. The shelter complements its existing youth program, which operates out of their Fort Lauderdale Campus. "It's a drop-in center where youth can also receive therapy and life coaching," Lima explained. "If kids want to come after school and do their homework, they can hang out with us. There are social programs nightly for youth so they can connect and be with other like-minded youth and adults that support them." These programs are helped or solely supported by money from the AIDS Walk. All money raised in SunServe's name will be matched by AHF, making the event all the more vital. That Seventies Gala Six days later, SunServe will take off its walking shoes and put on its dancing shoes for Studio Shine, a Studio 54-inspired party. "We're creating an experience where attendees will be transported back in time to 1978, New

50 | OutClique.com

York City, for the opening of Studio Shine, an allusion to Studio 54, with a modern twist." The event is still formal, but sequins, sparkles, and an aesthetic evoking the end of the disco era are encouraged. "That's what we're trying to conjure for partygoers, the glamor of late-seventies, early-eighties disco through a comprehensive experience." Happening at The Venue in Wilton Manors, the program won't follow the traditional gala format. While the night will begin with a cocktail party, it will be followed by an award presentation before everyone moves into the dining room. The award presentation will honor Karen Prescod, the founder of Bowtie Kids, with the Tomorrow's Legacy Award. David Jobin, CEO of The Our Fund Foundation, is the recipient of the Visionary Award. "I've developed a deep respect for the people there and for Tony Lima's vision and leadership," Jobin told OutClique. "To be recognized for the role I play at The Our Fund Foundation is especially meaningful as it comes from friends and colleagues I hold in the highest regard." He also voices support for their mission, especially in the mental health field. "As LGBTQ people, we are twice as likely to suffer from mental health disorders than our heterosexual counterparts. That South Florida has one of the leading LGBTQ mental health agencies in the country is something we should all celebrate and not take for granted." Once the presentation is finished, guests will move into the dining room for food and surprises. In addition to a sumptuous, four-course dinner and an open bar provided by Bacardi and Grey Goose, there will be fantastic entertainment to get the crowd on its feet. Headlining the night is club sensation Ultra Nate, perhaps best known for her cover of "If You Could Read My Mind" on the soundtrack of the movie 54 and the gay anthem "Free." Following the dancing and performance, 200 additional guests will “crash” the Gala for an after party complete with a superstar DJ and drag performances until the wee hours of the night. Lima came to SunServe in November 2021 and immediately got to work creating a gala designed to stand out on the South Florida social calendar that would also become a fundraising vehicle for Florida AIDS Walk. He

held a 1920s-themed party three months later that sold out weeks in advance. The SunServe team immediately started planning this year's party, which sold out three weeks after tickets went on sale, meaning the community lent support twice in one calendar year. "There's immense satisfaction for me that people had such a good time last year and want to buy tickets to join us again," he said. In addition to his team, he credits the gala's co-chairs for going into the community and raising money, support, and enthusiasm. Among the Gala Chairs are Terry Behal, G Wright, Commissioner Chris Caputo and community activist Marc Martorana who's back for a second year. "The popularity of this gala made us want to add an additional five tables plus an after-party for those who want to show their support and join in on a more affordable level," he said. "Not only does the gala bring our community together, but it also raises much-needed funds to support the most vulnerable in our community." Making the gala's success even more important is that money raised will still count towards their AIDS Walk total, meaning it will all be matched by AHF. "People look to connect in interesting ways to be in community and be in solidarity with like-minded people," Lima said. "That's what we try to develop with the host committees for Studio SHINE and Crash the Gala After Party, to take ownership of SunServe's mission by representing the organization and becoming our ambassadors in the community." Studio Shine gala will be the disco party of the year, but its effects will be felt long after the music stops and the disco balls come down. From the youth shelter to senior service to everything SunServe does, the funds raised will lift people up daily. New Opportunities for Health & Wellness We're well into the new year and those resolutions may be fading, but you can still make healthy changes to your lifestyle, give up bad habits, and improve your well-being. It’s no wonder that many people celebrate the New Year by resolving to get healthier. The most popular resolutions include getting more mindfulness, exercise, losing weight, and eating a healthier diet. Developing a realistic plan will enable you to strengthen your physical and mental health. Here are some steps you can take to get healthier in the year ahead and achieve your health goals: 1. Lose weight and keep it off A resolution to lose weight is one of the most important steps you can take toward better health. According to Steven Santiago, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, “Losing just five to ten percent of your body weight can help lower your risk of chronic health conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.” If you haven’t exercised for a while, going to a gym every day may not be a realistic goal. Making a resolution to simply add more physical activity into your daily life is more attainable. Park farther away from the entrance to the grocery store, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and exercise while you watch TV. 2. Eat a healthy diet Healthy eating involves both what you eat and how you eat it. Getting your recommended servings of fruits and vegetables each day is important because fruits and veggies are low in calories and fat, high in fiber, and rich sources of vitamins and minerals. Foods that contain fiber keep you feeling full, which helps you lose weight. Gloria Cabral, RD, LDN, Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist at Care Resource also adds that, “Eating too fast can

cause you to overeat, so slow down and chew each bite carefully. Turn off the TV, put your phone away, and enjoy the textures and flavors of the meal. As you eat, it can take your brain up to 20 minutes to get the message from your stomach that you’re no longer hungry, so stop eating before you feel full.” 3. Schedule an annual checkup Seeing your primary care doctor each year and taking advantage of your preventive care benefits can help you stay healthy. Regular checkups and preventive screenings allow your doctor to identify minor health issues before they become bigger problems. 4. Take steps to reduce stress Learning how to manage stress is an important part of taking care of yourself and maintaining good overall mental and physical health. If your stress is getting out of control, simple activities like practicing breathing exercises, going for a walk, or listening to music can help restore calm to your life. 5. Get more sleep Good quality sleep boosts your immune system and promotes emotional wellness by giving your mind time to rest and recharge. Establishing a relaxing bedtime routine, limiting screen time before bed, and creating a quiet sleep environment can help you get the sleep you need. Let’s keep our eyes on the year ahead. Integrating exercise and nutritious food is a preventative health practice that protects our hearts and minds. With the support provided by Care Resource’s medical providers, our community can rest assured that they will attain their New Year’s resolutions. Our medical providers can address primary care concerns, including cardiovascular health, sleep issues, mental health, and nutrition.

How To Survive a Panic Attack When It Strikes A person can experience a panic attack when they least expect it. This can cause a great deal of fear and anxiety for the person. Many people do not know what they should do when dealing with a panic attack. As a result, here are eight easy steps a person can follow when a panic attack strikes unexpectedly. Take a break: A panic attack can be very uncomfortable and can affect a person’s thinking. The best thing to do when this happens is to take a break in order to calm down. You don’t want to do anything when you're not thinking clearly. Take deep breaths: A person should take some deep breaths to help feel better and to get rid of some of the excessive fear and anxiety. There are many kinds of breathing exercises a person can learn to follow with the help of a mental health counselor. Taking some deep breaths can help a person relax right away. Distract yourself: A person should try to distract themselves from the panic they are experiencing. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, take a brisk walk, read the newspaper, or do something relaxing that will give them a fresh perspective on things. Visualize a red stop sign: A person should visualize a red stop sign in their mind when they encounter a fearful thought. When the negative thought comes, a person should

think of a red stop sign that serves as a reminder to stop focusing on that thought and to think of something else. A person can then try to think of something positive to replace the negative thought. Get the facts of your situation: Many people feel helpless when they experience a panic attack for the first time. The fact is that you will be ok and that it takes a few minutes for the anxiety to go away. Talk to a counselor and get the facts of what a panic attack is and what you can do when a panic attack occurs. Don’t dwell on your thoughts: A person must not dwell or focus on their thoughts during a panic attack. The more a person tries to reason out their thoughts the longer a panic attack will last. Read some positive statements from your favorite self-help book to help overcome your negative thoughts during a panic attack. Read some positive affirmations: Another technique that is very helpful is to have a small notebook of positive statements that makes you feel good. Whenever you come across an affirmation that makes you feel good, write it down in a small notebook that you can carry around with you in your pocket. Whenever you feel depressed, open up your small notebook and read those statements. Get help: It is important to talk to a qualified professional in order to learn how to survive a panic attack. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves in the long run because they will become better able to deal with any panic attacks that may occur in the future.

Stephen Grubb, Public Information Officer for Broward County Libraries

Celebrating Broward County Libraries Stephen Grubb “I have loved libraries all my life.” Stephen Grubb grew up with libraries as a central part of his life. Now, the person who moved to South Florida from Indiana in 2001 is the Public Information Officer for Broward County’s LIbraries Division. It was a small classified ad that transformed his love of libraries into a passion. “I answered a classified ad in the newspaper looking for someone who was passionate about technology and lifelong learning. I’m so fortunate that I happened upon that classified ad because libraries are definitely where I belong.” Originally a corporate trainer, Grubb has obtained his Masters in Library Science. Over the past 20 years, he’s helped facilitate the transformation of Broward’s library system to serve a tech-savvy generation. “Between 2001 and today, library services have transformed to meet the needs of the community. I’ve seen Broward County Library become an online service provider, adding eBooks, eAudiobooks, streaming video, and streaming music to the collection. Now, customers can access our collection from anywhere at any time. People can even get a library card emailed to them directly from our website.” Over the past few years, library staff have changed the way people use Broward’s 38 library locations for learning. They host events on social media and online

meetings, as well as technology classes for all skill levels. Not Your Father’s Library People who haven’t visited a library since their school days may be surprised when they look at Broward’s libraries. More than a book repository or DVD distributor, the services offered are practical for the 21st century. They include streaming movies you can watch on your TV or tablet, language learning with Rosetta Stone, online newspapers, even robots and birdwatching backpacks. “The great thing about public libraries is everyone uses them differently to suit their own unique needs. They might stop by to enjoy an exhibit, attend an event, learn computer skills in a class, use a library computer or our WiFi, or get some research guidance from one of our expert librarians.” It’s also about being in the community and offering a personal touch. “What sets us apart from an online retailer such as Amazon is that we offer free one-on-one personal assistance.” Grubb also points out that the “free” services are paid for by your taxes, and says since you’re already paying for it, you may as well use it. In 2024, Broward County’s library system will celebrate fifty years of service. Celebration specifics are still being worked out and are under wraps, but Grubb says there will be lots of events and a limited-edition library card.

Get Your Body

Ready For Summer We recently chatted with Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera from Genesis Health Institute about medical aesthetic treatments you can take advantage of to get your body ready for summer. Baxter Martin: Hello, Dr. Cabrera; thank you for joining us today. Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera Genesis Health Institute

Dr. Ferdinand Cabrera: It’s my pleasure.

Baxter Martin: To start, can you tell us a little about medical aesthetics and the treatments offered at Genesis Health Institute? Dr. Cabrera: Of course, medical aesthetics is a field that focuses on helping individuals look and feel their best through non-invasive cosmetic treatments. At Genesis Health Institute, we offer a variety of treatments, including Sculpsure for fat reduction, Accufit for body contouring, and RF Microneedling for collagen-boosting and anti-aging. Baxter Martin: That sounds fantastic. Can you explain the benefits of these treatments and why someone might choose them over more invasive cosmetic procedures? Dr. Cabrera: Absolutely. Sculpsure, Accufit, and RF Microneedling are all non-invasive treatments that deliver noticeable results without surgery or downtime. With Sculpsure, for example, a 25-minute appointment is all it takes to target and eliminate stubborn fat cells. Accufit and RF Microneedling are similarly convenient, allowing individuals to return to daily activities immediately.

Baxter Martin: That sounds like an excellent option for people looking to get their bodies ready for summer without sacrificing their busy schedules. Can you talk about the results these treatments deliver and how long they last? Dr. Cabrera: Sure. The beauty of these treatments is that they offer long-lasting results. Whether you’re looking to banish stubborn fat, tighten loose skin, or reduce the signs of aging, Sculpsure, Accufit, and RF Microneedling can help. And with results that can last for months or even years, these treatments provide a cost-effective solution for individuals looking to enhance their appearance. Baxter Martin: That’s impressive! And I imagine that cost is a significant consideration for many people regarding cosmetic treatments. Can you talk about the cost of these? Dr. Cabrera: Absolutely. Currently, Genesis Health Institute offers up to $4,000 off the regular price when you combine any two from Sculpsure, Accufit, and RF Microneedling. And with no need for surgery or extended recovery time, individuals can enjoy their refreshed and revitalized look while realizing significant savings. Baxter Martin: That’s great to hear. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us today, Dr. Cabrera. It’s been a pleasure. Dr. Cabrera: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure speaking with you as well.

Coral Springs Center for the Arts Just a Hop and a Skip Away Walking into the Coral Springs Center for the Arts (also known as “The Center”), the first two things you notice are the smiles that greet you and the openness of the courtyard that stands between the box office and the stairs to the lobby. If you go during one of their many shows, you hear the muffled sounds of excited attendees and see people taking pictures in front of the banner wall showcasing various shows, appealing to just about every demographic and generation. Their season lineup is as diverse as the community they serve. It has been a busy season for The Center coming out of the pandemic, having already had Broadway shows such as The Simon and Garfunkel Story and Stomp play to the community. Their comedy this season has been stellar, with Steven Wright and Kathleen Madigan already gracing the stage. And though their 2023 season is nearing an end, there is still music to hear and comedy to enjoy. On Friday, March 17, 2023, Michael Carbonaro will return to the stage for the first time since the pandemic presenting his newest show Michael Carbonaro: Lies on Stage. Bringing all his usual charisma, wit, and charm with him to delight audiences with his humor and magic, Michael last performed at The Center to a sold-out audience of all ages in December 2017, leaving them mesmerized

98 | OutClique.com

and elated. Outclique had an opportunity to ask Michael Carbonaro how he felt about returning to The Center to entertain his many fans from the region, "I am excited to finally get to bring my new Lies on Stage tour to Florida fans, friends, and families. The show is loaded with brand new magic and surprises, including two people from the audience disappearing on stage every night! It could be YOU!" Carbonaro's live show attracts more of a younger crowd, however his audience consists of families, groups of friends, and couples on a date night. Bill Haggett, the General Manager of The Coral Springs Center for the Arts, was asked why Magic Shows always have such a big turnout. "Nothing brings out the little kid excitement and the intrigue in adults like magic. Whether you spend the show trying to figure out the magical secrets or sit back and let your mind be blown, it's a great time for everyone!" Following the excitement and thrill of Carbonaro just five days later, the "Voice of Romance" legend Johnny Mathis will bring his timeless classics to The Coral Springs Center for The Arts on March 23, 2023. The Center will conclude its dynamite season with beloved Comedian Brian Regan on May 11, 2023.

Coral Springs Center for the Arts sits in Northern Broward County outside the high-traffic areas of other venues in the county. It is a medium-sized theatre with 1400 seats. Still, part of its beauty is its location and size, for it misses none of the more tantalizing elements of a larger theatre with some added bonuses and conveniences. Sitting just minutes from the Sawgrass Expressway Exit, traveling to see a show is an easy adventure. Parking is free and a breeze being only a short walk to the entrance. Guests who may be meeting friends or a date can meet in the open-air courtyard among its welcoming trees and warm lights. If they are in a VIP kind of mood, head up to the newly renovated Level3 Lounge for cocktails and complimentary bites away from the hustle and bustle of the busier downstairs lobby. Level3 is an exciting addition to the Center, leveling up the show experience, allowing frequent showgoers to purchase a membership or someone attending a show for the first time a one-night upgrade to have a more luxurious and intimate theatre experience. Outclique was able to visit with Meera Paul, The Center's Marketing Director, and ask her about the new Level3 Lounge. "I love showing our patrons our new Level3 Lounge at the Center. The ambiance is fantastic, the bar bites and the drink of the day are a nice surprise, and the best part to me is you can escape the lines! " The Level3 Lounge is also available to rent for private events, parties, and business meetings. Its comfortable seating and open space are a welcome versatile benefit. Though suited best for an evening party, The Center houses several different rental spaces aside from the

theater itself and Level3. In total, there are six spaces of varying size and capacity, allowing outside promoters to rent the facility and put shows on the stage or businesses to conduct seminars and multi-day conferences. Just in the last year, The Center has housed rentals of all sizes, from small committee meetings to the multi-day televised Ms. Florida and Ms. Florida Teen competition that uses every room the Center has available. The Center’s diversity of shows is made possible by its incredible versatility and staff's can-do spirit, which brought in the MMA fighting Championship and set up an entire octagon on the performance stage. In the off-summer months, the Center is home to Next Stop Broadway, the leading performing arts youth training center in the area. Next Stop Broadway has not only produced stars such as Ariana Grande, Carlos PenaVega, Broadway stars like Leanne Antonio, Dash Perry, and so many more. Its hallmark is the confidence and inclusivity it brings to its students. Allowing children of all sociological and economic backgrounds, races, religions, and sexual orientations to express themselves and cheer one another on and celebrate their uniqueness. Under its many roofs, The Coral Springs Center for the Arts is a worthwhile visit. Whether you are visiting for a fun night out to see some of the biggest names in show business or attending one of the Next Stop Broadways performances to see the future biggest name in showbiz being nurtured with love and encouragement, it is a place to smile, let one's troubles go and enjoy life.

Theaters Unite for I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart Island City Stage is proud to present I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart, a play about the nature of friendships in all its messed-up forms, with a special shout out to the kind of love that sometimes looks like rage. Playing March 2-April 2, 2023, this production will be co-produced by Atlanta, Georgia’s Out Front Theatre Company. “The Dramatists Guild, the national organization that works with theaters, playwrights, etc., put together a roundtable discussion in June 2020 of artistic directors of queer theaters from across the country,” Out Front Theatre Company’s Founder and Producing Artistic Director Paul Conroy says. “The artistic director of National Queer Theater, which is in New York, and I met from that roundtable, and we stayed in touch. We thought this kind of connection should happen all the time.”

108 | OutClique.com

In January 2021, the pair founded the Queer Theater Alliance. “That’s how we connected with Island City Stage,” Conroy explains. “My husband and I, along with some friends, would visit Wilton Manors once or twice a year, and we’ve been doing that since 2019. I connected with Andy Rogow, and we both really love this show. I said, you know, we’re close enough in proximity that it is feasible for us to do a co-production.” I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart will first be performed at Out Front Theatre Company, February 2-18, 2023. Written by Morgan Gould, the production follows best friends and roommates Samantha and Leo whose relationship comes into question after a new friend enters and upends their co-dependent world of mutual self-loathing and Grey’s Anatomy marathons.

“The show will close in Atlanta on February 18, and on February 19, everything will be struck and put into a truck, ready to be transported,” Conroy says. “Of the three actors, the two lead characters will travel down to Wilton Manors and perform the show at Island City Stage. So, it’s a co-production, but at the same time, I’m calling it like a two-theater tour.” Atlanta-based actors Sofia Palmero and Matthew Busch will play Samantha and Leo, and according to the duo, they are ecstatic to be involved with this production. “I am so unbelievably pumped,” Palermo exclaims. “It's rare that I get to play a character that is actually written as fat, rather than just bringing my own fatness to a character. I also tend to play very sweet and unassuming characters, so it's nice to get to play someone who is neither of those things.” Busch adds, “To say I’m thrilled would be an understatement. I haven't been onstage in probably close to four or five years. Prior to COVID, I was flexing my directing muscles and directing productions in Atlanta for a while. It's exciting to re-work my acting muscles on stage with a script I fell in love with the instant I read it. I'm also a big fan of Out Front Theatre here in Atlanta; they serve a very specific purpose in both the theater community and the LGBTQIA+ community, and it feels like ‘coming home’ when I'm invited to play with the team again.” Additionally, Palermo, who was born in Venezuela, moved to Florida when she was six and lived in the state until after graduating from college. She is looking forward to performing at Island City Stage, which she says is close to her hometown.

“I’ve been looking forward to this collaboration for months, and I am so excited that it’s happening. There's a real focus on creating community and connecting LGBTQIA+ people across disciplines and now across state lines!” Busch agrees. “I wasn't familiar with Island City Stage prior to joining the production, but I love and will always support a theater with a mission to tell queer stories. It's an important niche of both the theater world and the LGBTQIA+ world. This will be my first time taking a show on the road, and I'm excited to see how it translates to two separate, but similar audiences.” According to Conroy, he hopes co-producing I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart with Island City Stage is the beginning of more partnerships between queer theaters. “We all have such unique missions, but our individual missions are similar enough where there’s programming that we can all do,” he says. “I believe these partnerships or co-productions, whatever you want to call them, it’s a new way to expose new works and new authors to audiences, and really elevate them. Normally, if we’re licensing a show, we fill out an online application, we get the script, and there’s never any contact with the author. You send your check off, pay for the rights, produce the show, and move on once it’s done. This way, it feels wonderful because this is a new play from an up-andcoming author, and we’re giving her the chance for her show to be shown twice. We’re building momentum for her and the show. When people start doing this show more in the future, they’ll see that we were two of the first companies to produce it.”

Malevo Comes to The Parker Direct from its recent return appearance on America’s Got Talent, Malevo brings its thrilling all-male troupe to The Parker on March 9, 2023, as part of the 2022/2023 Broward Center Dance and Classical Series. Having first taken America’s Got Talent by storm in Season 11, Malevo returned this January in a performance described by NBC as “Their high-energy, intricately choreographed Malambo dance was performed in leather outfits in front of electrifying bright orange lighting. During their performance, they whipped around ropes in perfect precision and played drums in harmony. Towards the end of the dance, they even put the ropes in their mouth in one edgy trick!” Created in 2015 by director, choreographer, and dancer Matías Jaime, Malevo specializes in Malambo with a modern, avant-garde, and transgressive approach, merging it with other dance styles like flamenco and urban percussion. In an interview with Broadway World, Jaime said: "We love to perform the Malambo, a traditional Argentine folk dance of great virility and dexterity. We start from its essence and roots but seek to take it beyond its limits. We keep to

the purity of the dance but seek also to achieve a perfect combination, to give a complete innovative, visual, and sensory experience for our audiences." It's an approach that ignited the stage and drew raves this year from the America’s Got Talent judges: “I think this was perfection. Genuinely. Honestly. As good as I’ve ever, ever seen. This is the standard everyone has to be in my opinion right now, honestly. You brought beyond your A-game. - Simon Cowell “It is so intense, it is so…everything…. I love you guys.” - Heidi Klum “You are a memorable group. You brought more energy, you brought more live music, you are the perfect Act to have your own room in Vegas. I would imagine people would go and see this. And I think the super fans are gonna love you.” - Howie Mandel With live music and virtuosic dancing, Malevo delivers an exhilarating and engaging show that is perfect for the entire family.

The Mikado Playing off one of the musical’s famous lyrics, the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players performance of The Mikado coming to the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center on March 12, 2023, has been updated to make a “production to fit the time.” The all-new, critically acclaimed production began as a collaborative effort between the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players and the Asian-American theatrical community. Serving as an example of promoting diversity, equity and inclusive practice with classic works of art, this production welcomes performers of all backgrounds to share the magic of Gilbert & Sullivan with audiences from all backgrounds as well. Of course, the timeless libretto, beautiful music, and all of the favorite characters remain. The New York Times raved, “A comic gem! A tightly choreographed comedy of manners - the madcap merriment takes its course!” The history and inspiration for the writing of The Mikado is center stage as the real life characters of Gilbert, Sullivan and Victorian London’s D’Oyly Carte Opera Company are combined with the imagined setting of Titipu, influenced by the art and architecture of Japan that had recently reached England in the late 19th century.

There are the three little maids from school, a wandering minstrel, a hilariously corrupt public official, and a Lord High Executioner with a list of offenders deserving of his services, including himself – for flirting! At the heart of this tale is a love story: a beautiful school girl loves the romantic wandering minstrel, but she is engaged to the executioner. This romantic triangle takes the usual course of thwarted love, until the arrival of a fearsome noble woman claiming the minstrel as her “perjured lover,” and later of the emperor himself, with his own list of punishments to fit the crime. Starkly contrasting historical treatments of The Mikado in several ways, the original prologue provides the audience with a context for the work. The character representations are of a decidedly Victorian English company, with fantastical highlights and juxtapositions between an imagined Japan and anachronistic elements from 1880s London; fueled only by Gilbert’s own imagination. This event is presented as part of the 2022/2023 Broward Center Dance and Classical Series and made possible by a grant from Funding Arts Broward, supporting innovative local visual and performing arts in Broward County.

A Stephen Sondheim Musical Tribute To Steve With Love Symphony of the Americas & Music Director Pablo Mielgo welcome Emmy Award-winner and Tony nominated actress, singer and recording artist, Liz Callaway, in a special tribute performance celebrating the legacy of Stephen Sondheim. The exclusive Florida engagement takes place Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 7:45 pm at Broward Center for Performing Arts in the Amaturo Theater. Sondheim was a singular musical theater giant. His music and lyrics shaped the modern Broadway stage and redefined the Broadway musical with his new formula. “I fell in love with Sondheim music when I was 10 years old, when my parents took me to see my first Broadway show, Company. I brought home the cast album and memorized every song. Little did I know that his music would become part of my DNA. I’ll always be grateful to Steve for taking a chance on me, for his guidance, and for giving me ‘so much stuff to sing,’” said Liz Callaway in an interview with Playbill Magazine, December 29, 2021. That experience was life changing for Callaway. Ten years later, she made her Broadway debut in Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along. She received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in Baby, and for five years, she won acclaim as Grizabella in Cats. Callaway also starred in the original casts of Miss Saigon, The Three Musketeers, and The Look of Love. Callaway has performed in off-Broadway productions and received a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in The Spitfire Grill (Playwrights Horizons). Her New York appearances include the legendary Follies in Concert at Lincoln Center, A Stephen Sondheim Evening. As a concert and recording artist, she and her sister Ann Hampton Callaway created the award-winning Sibling Rivalry, and Boom!, a celebration of the music of the 60’s and 70’s. In 2022, Callaway released her latest album To Steve With Love, which was recorded during a live performance at New York’s 54 Below, for which she recently

received the 2022 BroadwayWorld Cabaret Award for “Best Show, Celebrity”. Callaway also premiered a new concert featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim worldwide in 9 countries including China, France, and Barcelona Spain. Her distinctive voice has been heard in animated feature films. Callaway sang the Academy Award nominated song “Journey to the Past” in the animated feature Anastasia and is the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s Aladdin and the King of Thieves and The Return of Jafar. Her additional film work includes the singing voice of the title character in The Swan Princess, Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, and Beauty and the Beast.

The Program (selections include)

“Merrily We Roll Along Overture” from Merrily We Roll Along “What More Do I Need” from Saturday Night “Broadway Baby” from Follies “Old Friends/Like It Was” from Merrily We Roll Along “Comedy Tonight” from A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum “Anyone Can Whistle” from Anyone Can Whistle “Our Time” from Merrily We Roll Along “Sweeney Todd Suite” from Sweeney Todd “The Miller’s Son” from A Little Night Music “Children Will Listen” from Into The Woods “Follies Overture” from Follies “Losing My Mind” from Follies “Being Alive” from Company Symphony of the Americas enters its 35th season in 2022-2023 under the direction of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Pablo Mielgo. The internationallyrecognized artist from Spain, Mielgo, continues Symphony of the Americas’ commitment to serving South Florida’s multicultural population with diverse programming. Symphony of the Americas represents a cultural crossroads of music, ranging from classical to Broadway showcasing artistic excellence and globally-recognized guest artists. This season, Mielgo and The Symphony have set a goal to engage more deeply with the community.

Spend a Glamorous Night at the Kravis Center with Bernadette Peters March 15, 2023 Kravis Center for the Performing Arts | Kravis.org

On March 15, 2023, Tony Award-winning performer Bernadette Peters will be delighting audiences with a one-night only concert at West Palm Beach’s Kravis Center. Singing Broadway favorites that only Peters knows how to do best, everyone in attendance is bound for a remarkable evening. With an illustrious career spanning five decades, Peters’ voice, talent, and stage presence has made her a legend of stage and screen. As one of Broadway’s most critically acclaimed artists, she has earned three Tony Awards, a Golden Globe, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Some of her most notable roles include the Witch in Into the Woods, Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun, Mama Rose in Gypsy, and in 2018, Peters replaced Bette Midler as Dolly Levi in Hello, Dolly! OutClique had the opportunity to catch up with Peters before her upcoming South Florida appearance. Denny Patterson: Thank you for taking some time to chat with me, Bernadette! Can you begin by telling us what we can expect from your concert at the Kravis Center? Bernadette Peters: Since I was in Hello, Dolly! in 2018, I’ve added in two numbers from the show, “Before the Parade Passes By” and “So Long Dearie.” They’re a lot of fun and the audience really enjoys them, and I also have a brand-new opening! Denny Patterson: What do you always hope audiences take away from your concerts? Bernadette Peters: First of all, and above all else, I hope that they’re entertained, and that can cover so many things. Thoughtfulness, fun, emotions, something that makes them remember a happy moment in their life. I have a lot of fun things, and I even tell a joke or two, but I also have dramatic songs. And I do a lot of Sondheim, and he talks about the healing conditions so tenderly, sensitively, and thoughtfully. Of course, there are songs that remind me of special moments in my life, like “No One Is Alone” and “Children Will Listen.” I feel like it's a privilege to be up there singing to people and singing songs that I choose, because when you do your own show, it’s about the songs that you want to sing. It’s not about the character. Yes, they’re character driven, but when you play a character, you’re given the song, and

that’s it. I sing songs that other characters sing because when I sit in the wing, I’m listening. I’m the audience, and think, oh, I love that song. Denny Patterson: Is there a song from your set that is the most meaningful to you? Bernadette Peters: They all have a different meaning to me, and I choose these songs because I connect to them deeply and in a special way. So, each one is important. Denny Patterson: Your entertainment career has spanned for decades. For those who don't know, how did this journey begin for you? Bernadette Peters: My mother said I used to sing in front of the television when I was little, which I probably did because I love all kinds of music. So, she took me to singing lessons, and when I was five, I was on The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour. Even before that, I was on Juvenile Jury, and that was the first thing I ever did. So, I really grew up in the business. I had a normal childhood because I went to public school until I was 13, but my career was more of a hidden hobby then. I didn’t want the kids to know I was different, so I didn’t talk about it as much (laughs). Then when I was 13, I went on the road and understudied Dainty June in the second national tour of Gypsy. Then cut to years later, I’m playing Mama Rose. What was interesting about it when I was a kid, my mother came along with me, but so did my sister because she was the understudy for Louise. When I did it on stage, it felt like a recreation of my childhood. Denny Patterson: What keeps performing new and exciting for you? Bernadette Peters: I'm always about growing and learning. That's why I choose songs that have a lot of meaning. They always reveal something new to me and take me on a journey. Staying open to the creativity that comes in when I sing, that’s what keeps it new and exciting, and acting is the same way. I’m always growing, and it’s all about how much more I can connect with the audience. How can we all have this experience together? They come in and sit down, but I’m on that side of the stage, and we’ll have this exciting journey together. This special moment in the theater. Denny Patterson: What was the best advice you received when you first started on Broadway?

OutClique.com | 129

Bernadette Peters: My first acting teacher, his name was David Le Grant, and he said to never copy anybody. Never try to be like anyone else. They already have one of those. The way emotions come out of you, that’s the original way. There’s only one of you, and always bring that to the table. That way, people will go, oh, I want her because she’s different from anybody else. I like what I’m feeling from her. She’s not trying to do this in the style of whomever else. Denny Patterson: Some of your most memorable roles include Dot in Sunday in the Park with George, the Witch in Into the Woods, and Mama Rose in Gypsy, which are all Stephen Sondheim shows. What was it truly like working with him? Bernadette Peters: It was wonderful. If you do revivals, a lot of the time, the author has passed on. Steve was always involved. If you asked him what this line meant, what does it mean when a character does this, could you take more time here, he would go, wait a minute. Let me think about that. He would go through his brain, which was amazing. When he wrote, he explored all possibilities, and he would find the best one. It was like having Shakespeare right there. Denny Patterson: There were rumors that you were going to be involved with his last musical, Square One. Is this true or not? Bernadette Peters: I did the last reading with Nathan Lane, and then Steve passed on. So, I don’t know what’s going to happen with that show. Denny Patterson: What are some upcoming projects we should be on the lookout for? Bernadette Peters: It was announced that Carol Burnett will have her 90th birthday celebration on April 26, so I will be doing a few things on that, which I think will be a lot of fun. Then there’s something else, but it hasn’t been announced yet, so I can’t talk about it right now. Denny Patterson: Yes, I was very happy to hear that

you will be involved with Carol Burnett's 90th birthday special. What kind of impact has she had on you? Bernadette Peters: She’s just so full of kindness. I recently watched her on Finding Your Roots, and she talks about the man who gave her money to go to New York. Carol thought he was just drunk on champagne, but his wife said, no, he means it. So, he gave her his card, and when she went to his office, he said, I’m going to give you the money to go to New York, but there are conditions. You pay me back if and when you can, no interest, and you promise to help other young performers. She saw me in an Off-Broadway show in New York, and one of her dearest friends happened to be the partner of my manager. She came to see the show, and while we were talking, she mentioned that was going to have a new TV variety show. I was the first person she booked, and she brought me back year after year after year. That was so kind of her, and I love her so much. Denny Patterson: What more do you hope to accomplish with your career? Bernadette Peters: Oh, plenty! I think I’m ready to do a play. Although, I would miss singing, so maybe I could hum a few tunes within the play (laughs). I’d also love to do some more television, and I’m just ready to take on some more interesting roles. Things are happening. I would also love for Broadway Barks to expand even more, where we can help more animals with medical needs. They’re here for us. There are people that are so lonely, and all they have is their animal. Companion animals are very precious, and they serve an important purpose, which many people came to realize during the pandemic. So many animals were adopted. Denny Patterson: Before we wrap up, do you have any other project or anything else you’d like to mention or plug? Bernadette Peters: Just the Carol Burnett special on April 26 on NBC, and then a couple other projects that I can’t talk about just yet, but stay tuned!

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Receives First-Time $10,000 Grant From the National Endowment for the Arts

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), celebrating 25 years of artistic excellence, is pleased to announce that it has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to receive a Grants for Arts Projects award of $10,000. This grant will support SFSO’s educational initiative, “Preserving Our Coral Reef: Teams of Success.” This grant is one of 1,251 Grants for Arts Projects awards totaling nearly $28.8 million that were announced by the NEA as part of its first round of fiscal year 2023 grants. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects in communities nationwide,” said NEA chair Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD. “Projects such as South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Preserving Our Coral Reef: Teams of Success’ strengthen arts and cultural ecosystems, provide equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice, and contribute to the health of our communities and our economy.” Through multimedia, props, costumes, and narration, SFSO’s musicians, led by music educator Donna Wissinger, shine a light on the plight of Florida’s 350+ mile long coral reef in the “Preserving Our Coral Reef: Teams of Success” initiative. Wissinger explains the environmental stressors that have created the precarious situation and brings hope for the future with the concept of coral micro-fragmentation, a process discovered by marine scientist, Dr. David Vaughan, in which a large

healthy coral can be broken into smaller pieces. These plugs quickly grow into larger corals and are transplanted back onto the reef. The program is set to an emotional score by composer Robert Kerr. “South Florida Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to receive this meaningful grant for the first time which will allow us to continue our mission of educating future generations of ecological preservationists, explorers and musicians,” said Jacqueline Lorber, president and CEO of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. “This initiative, set to tour in the tri-county area, is part of our ongoing commitment to Symphony in the Schools which focuses on critical STEAM programming. ‘Preserving Our Coral Reef’ may just inspire the next Jacques Cousteau!” Since its founding, SFSO’s signature music education program, Symphony in the Schools, has reached over 100,000 students from underserved communities and has provided more than $3.5 million in services and resources in the past five years. The curriculum utilizes thematic music education programming including a ‘Power of Perseverance’ presentation highlighting impactful young people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds who strive to make a difference, and masterclass components that work with children side-by-side to improve musicianship.

Masterworks IV Featuring Cellist Zuill Bailey Widely considered as one of the world’s premier cellists, Zuill Bailey is a Grammy Award-winning, internationally renowned soloist, recitalist, artistic director, and teacher. His rare combination of celebrated artistry, technical wizardry, and engaging personality has secured his place as one of the most sought after and active cellists today. A consummate concerto soloist, Bailey has performed

with symphony orchestras worldwide, but none will remain as special as the South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO). He and Maestra Sebrina Alfonso first met when Bailey was a teenager, and they have built an artistic friendship that continues to grow stronger. Bailey will return to the SFSO on March 22, 2023, for Masterworks IV at The Parker, and OutClique caught up with him ahead of his upcoming appearance.

Denny Patterson: Thank you for taking some time to chat with me, Zuill! How excited are you to come back and play with the SFSO again? Zuill Bailey: I couldn't be more thrilled to return to share music with an organization and conductor with whom I have such a deep history. This truly is a situation that holds to the saying, ‘Be careful what you wish for, for you might just get it.’ In 1998 the wonderful Sebrina Alfonzo dreamed of bringing the beauty of classical music to her home community. Twenty-five years later, that community and the surrounding region now celebrate a visionary organization that has helped sculpt the cultural landscape and inspire so many. Denny Patterson: Yes, you have known Maestra Sebrina since you were a teenager. What kind of impact has she made on your career? Zuill Bailey: I have found that my most cherished memories are making music with great friends. I met Sebrina Alfonso as a teenager in the 1980s, and since day one, I've been inspired by her vision. Most importantly, her kindness and friendship. Denny Patterson: What do you enjoy the most about artistically collaborating with her? Zuill Bailey: Sebrina and I have a deep history that is based on trust. With this trust, we can walk onstage together with the freedom to have limitless inspiration. Denny Patterson: And you also performed in the very first Key West Symphony concert. What do you remember the most about that? Zuill Bailey: The very first Key West Symphony concert was an incredible groundswell of positivity. I will never forget standing onstage with Sebrina as the packed Tennessee Williams Theatre rose to its feet to honor her leadership. Denny Patterson: Can you tell us more about the piece you are performing for Masterworks IV? Zuill Bailey: The Dvořák Cello Concerto is arguably the most celebrated of all cello concertos. It is the perfect

storm of a great symphony and featured cello. Dvořák was at the height of his powers as a composer and used the cello brilliantly to share a remarkable sonic journey of life. The cello, with the same range as the human voice, is the perfect vehicle to musically tell the story so many composers dream of telling. Denny Patterson: What do you ultimately hope audiences take away from this concert? Zuill Bailey: The audience will witness a celebration on all accounts. These concerts are a celebration of friendship, life, and dreams realized, through a musical masterpiece. Denny Patterson: Have you always had a passion for music? Zuill Bailey: I was very lucky to have grown up in a musical family. It has simply always been a part of my life. I can't imagine a world without the arts. Denny Patterson: How did your journey with the cello begin, and what drew you to that particular instrument? Zuill Bailey: I began the cello at age four and realized very soon I couldn't live without it. My parents had to actually ask me to stop playing each day. Around age 12, I was given the advice: ‘If you can find what you love to do, and make that what you do - you will never work a day in your life.’ So far, that has held true for me! Denny Patterson: What are some future goals you hope to accomplish with your music career? Zuill Bailey: Inspired by Sebrina, I continue to try to bring communities together through the arts. Music does change people's lives and makes for a greater future. The grass is greener where you water it. That starts at home in one's own community. Denny Patterson: Before we wrap up, are there any other upcoming projects or anything else you would like to mention or plug? Zuill Bailey:These days I'm in the midst of commissioning young composers to write more for the cello. There is no greater ‘sound investment.’

Stay up-to-date and connect with Bailey by following him on Facebook and Instagram, or visit his official website, ZuillBailey.com. Visit SouthFloridaSymphony.org or call (954)522-8445 for more information and to purchase tickets for Masterworks IV.

Wicked the Musical

Castmember Christian Thompson March 29 - April 9, 2023 Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts

www.Kravis.org

We’re not in Kansas anymore: Actor Christian Thompson reflects on the impact of Wicked as it lands in South Florida For actor Christian Thompson, a Fort Lauderdale native, there’s really no place like home. And, without so much as the click of a heel, the actor returns to South Florida to take the stage at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts for Wicked’s March 29-April 9, 2023, run. Thompson, who has a smile that could melt even the wickedest of witches, joins the cast as Fiyero, Elphaba’s love interest. Calling it a dream role, Thompson did not think he’d get the chance to play the character since only a handful of Black actors have been cast in the role. “My family has always been a really big Wizard of Oz family. We were the family that packed into the family room and tried to match up the Pink Floyd album to the movie, and that was before it was digital and easy to do so,” he said. “And, I just decided at eight or nine years old that I wanted to be an actor and I was very serious about it.”

When his mother heard they were making a musical about her favorite character, the Wicked Witch of the West, she bought two copies of the book it was based on, The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Although his mother only got about halfway through the book, Thompson devoured it. Wicked, the Tony-award winning show debuted on Broadway in 2003. Towards the end of the show’s first year, Thompson was in NYC with a hip-hop dance company. His mother entered the pair in the lottery for the Saturday matinée performance before their flight home, but they didn’t win. “We had just enough time to enter for the evening show and my mom was like, ‘I’ll make you a deal, if we win, I’ll push back our flights and, if we don’t win, we’ll run to the airport’,” he said. “We won that evening and we saw a show for the first time in New York.”

Thompson’s mother, who he calls “literally the best mother anyone could ask for,” pushed their flight back until Monday and the pair, who entered the lottery yet again, were able to see Wicked a second time that Sunday. “I had seen the show before they paid me to see the show, I believe a total of nine times,” he said. “So when I say I’m a fan, I really mean it.” Growing up, the actor had two posters hanging over his childhood bed - Phantom of the Opera and Wicked. “If that little guy knew what he would be doing right now, I think he’d freak out. He would probably cry. I was an emotional child,” he said. “I also know that because when I got the call, I cried.” Even after nearly 20 years, Wicked continues to resonate with audiences. “The more ingratiated I get in this show, the more I realize why it’s lasted this long. It’s the different universal themes of acceptance, of friendship, of love, and of a deep understanding of the gray area between good and evil,” he said.

“You can take away all the smoke and mirrors, but it would still be a brilliant show because of the relationships between the characters. It’s a fantastical journey about friendship and love and what it means to be your true authentic self,” he said. With the original Wizard of Oz released in 1939, some in the audience may never have seen it. It is not lost on Thompson that the older generation’s first exposure to Elphaba is as the Wicked Witch of the West, as the antagonist. But, now this new generation is first seeing her as the protagonist. “I think there is this beautiful parallel between the older generation’s thinking and the hope I have in the newer generation and the way they see things in a different perspective—the way things don’t have to be so black and white. Even though the Wizard of Oz starts in black and white, we get to color,” he said. “I’m excited that people are going to see a person of color as a prince, as someone that is wanted and adored, that does get to assist in doing the right thing, as someone that is allowed to love and make mistakes and just be a full person.” The impact of his casting in this role is not lost on Thompson.

From a cultural perspective, Thompson also recognizes the importance of that understanding and for people to be able to reflect on that.

“For me, this is just the greatest gift because I didn’t see a lot of that growing up. There weren’t as many examples,” he said.

“When we look at activism in our country right now, we look at the way some people choose to be activists. And, some people think that’s wicked and some other people don’t know exactly what that all means,” he said. “But, we’ve been really lucky with how the creatives, the people in charge of the show, talk about making sure it’s real. No matter how fantastical this world is, at the end of the day, it’s about real people, even if they’re green.”

For kids looking to follow in his footsteps, Thompson reminds them that they are already doing it.

It's the realness that matters.

instagram.com/ChristianThompsonActor

“Just put your heart into it. Don’t think because it’s not on Broadway or just because it’s not a national tour that it’s not as valuable,” he said. “The creation of art is always important. It always has value, and always brings something to a community.”

Johnny Mathis Is Coming to Coral Springs March 23, 2023 Coral Springs Center for the Arts | www.TheCenterCS.com

Celebrating 67 years as a recording artist in the music industry, Johnny Mathis is still proving that he is the “Voice of Romance.” A sublime vocalist whose approach to pop music eclipses passing fads and trends, Mathis has performed songs in an incredible variety of styles and categories. Bestknown for his supremely popular hits like “Chances Are," "It's Not For Me To Say," and "Misty,” he has recorded close to 80 albums, six Christmas albums, and has sold millions of records worldwide. Three of his songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2003, he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. On March 23, 2023, the legendary singer will appear at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts to perform some of his greatest hits and personal favorites. Ahead of his upcoming engagement, Mathis took some time to chat with OutClique. Denny Patterson: We are so excited that you will be coming to South Florida with your “Voice of Romance Tour.” What can we expect? Johnny Mathis: I sing songs that I think my voice is capable of doing at this time. I’m now a little bit over 80 years old, and I started recording these songs, like “Misty” and “Chances Are,” when I was about 30. I still sing them in my regular performances, and if I think they don’t sound as great anymore, I’ll change songs (laughs). Denny Patterson: What do you always hope audiences take away from your concerts? Johnny Mathis: I hope they feel compassion for people who do what I do, because it’s a lifelong process. I’m traveling constantly and doing what I can to maintain a voice. I remember when I was a kid, my dad was my best pal, he sang to me and my siblings all the time. So, I wanted to be like him. He used to take me out to different places in San Francisco, and we were lucky to be raised there because every wonderful figure came through at some point, and I got to meet them all. Denny Patterson: This year will mark your 67th year as a recording artist. How meaningful is this milestone for you?

Johnny Mathis: Well, the thing about what I do is what most athletes do. The most important thing is to stay healthy and safe, and what God gave you, he doesn’t take it away. As long as you keep what you’ve got, and it’s a process, you have to be very careful, then you can maintain it. My daily routine is learned from when I was very young. It’s like anybody else who does what they do. They learn how to do it, and they treasure it. Denny Patterson: After all these years, what keeps performing new and exciting for you? Johnny Mathis: The thing that I enjoy the most is the process of working with musicians. They are the ones who support me, and they are the ones that don’t really receive any recognition. Some of the best musicians in the world have accompanied me, and nobody knows who they are. It’s kind of sad, but I am happy to embrace them and tell them how much I love them and their music. So many of them are only heard, but they never get acknowledged. I understand that and appreciate it to a point where I try to keep a low profile, as far as my personal life. I try to live a normal life and not be so arrogantly proud about it. But working with musicians is what keeps performing exciting and new to me. Denny Patterson: For those who don’t know, what made you want to pursue entertainment? Johnny Mathis: My dad is the reason. He and my mom were my best pals, I am one of seven children, and we were all very close. The nine of us lived in four rooms for many years, and when I started to occasionally sing, somebody would give me a little money once in a while. It eventually added up, and I had the chance to move my whole family out of this terrible little dungeon that we lived in to a very nice house out by the ocean in San Francisco. It was the happiest moment of my life. Denny Patterson: If you didn’t choose singing, what career path do you think you might have chosen? Johnny Mathis: Probably athletics. I was very good at sports when I was younger, and I’ve had moments with some of the greatest athletes in the world. Also, I think being an athlete also helped me out immensely in saving the qualities of my voice. Denny Patterson: Your first national TV appearance was on The Ed Sullivan Show on June 16, 1957, singing

Denny Patterson: You have also earned the moniker as the “Voice of Christmas.” Has Christmas always been such a special time for you? Johnny Mathis: Absolutely, right from the beginning. The reason why I wanted to record was because I wanted to do some Christmas songs for my mom and dad, because they always made Christmas magical. They worked their butts off all the time, and even though we didn’t receive many presents or anything, we always had this wonderful tree, and just the fact that we celebrated together. It was such a wonderful time. Denny Patterson: What is your absolute favorite, number one Christmas song? Johnny Mathis: Oh, gosh. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go!” I think it’s the perfect Christmas song. After I started to travel, I got the chance to meet Bing Crosby and so many of these wonderful people that I listened to on record, and that was one of my favorite songs.

Denny Patterson: Who are some other artists you are a fan of? Johnny Mathis: Oh, I listen to everything, and so much of it is awful. Once in a while, you’ll hear something fabulous and it’s worth listening to. But I love Dionne Warwick, Barbra Steisand, Lena Horne - you name them, I’ve probably sung with them. They are like me in so many ways. They’re just happy to be doing something that they love doing. Denny Patterson: What advice can you offer for anyone trying to break into the music industry? Johnny Mathis: Oh, dear. I have no advice because I was never concerned about breaking into anything. I just sang. It was fun, and then this wonderful man from Columbia Records heard me sing at a little place in San Francisco. That’s how it all started. Denny Patterson: What more do you hope to accomplish with your career? Johnny Mathis: I think people forget that it’s all about health. You have to be healthy. I’ve listened to some of the most famous singers I’ve ever heard of in my life when they weren’t healthy, and they sounded awful. So, I just plan to stay healthy and continue what I love doing.

Denny Patterson: I read that a potential new Christmas album may be released this year. Is that true? Johnny Mathis: You know, because I’ve been with the record company for so many years, they have things that they want me to do, but I never know about it until the last minute (laughs). They say, oh, by the way. We want you to record this and that. That’s sort of how it goes. I sing all the time, but they want me to record music that they think can sell. They’re looking for ways to make money, so oftentimes, they don’t tell me until they come up with something that they think they can make money with.

"It's Not For Me To Say," and that helped launch you to worldwide stardom. What do you remember the most about that moment? Johnny Mathis: I remember how little it was. It always looks big on television, but when I went to the place where they filmed the show, it was a small theater. Ed Sullivan was a very nice, older man, but I remember he didn’t speak very well. A Behind the Scenes Tour Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida Members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) make it look and sound effortless. As if they just show up, do a couple of scales and take the stage. But not hardly. When show day arrives, the members begin preparing from the moment they wake up. Now two members, Susan Foley and Rafael Gragert, are taking us behind the scenes and giving OutClique an exclusive look at how it all comes together. Foley, a tenor, comes from a musical family. Her mother plays piano and guitar and her dad is a flutist. She grew up singing in church and school choirs and loves a wide range of genres. “My favorite song to sing is “Misty Mountain Hop” by Led Zeppelin. I don football pants and bang the tambourine on my legs with no injury while roaring. It is just the best feeling!”

Gragert, also a tenor, hails from Venezuela and has a patriotic background. “When I was 9 years old at my little town in Venezuela, my sister told me that she heard me singing in the bathroom the Venezuelan national anthem, after that she told the teacher at school that I can sing, in the next cultural festival I was participating with her and we both won First Place at the competition” He hit adolescence and took a break. It was GMCSF who helped him find his voice. “I moved to the US and I wasn’t singing at all until I found my beautiful Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida and I’m so grateful to be part of it. I love learning new things and being surrounded by so many positive and supportive people, also with amazing maestros like Gabe Salazar, GMCSF’s Artistic Director.” They begin getting in the zone during rehearsals, well

before they take the stage. “I feel in the zone when I feel confident in the voice I bring to the group and as an ensemble,” Foley said.

want to display my gorgeous menopausal female figure to my peers backstage.”

“When we practice every piece of the music for the concert, we start putting together the songs and the sound is amazing in rehearsal,” Gragert said. “It can be overwhelming but after a month of rehearsal I start getting in the zone.”

Live performances always run the risk of something not going according to plan. Well-prepared groups like GMCSF know how to roll with it and the audience never knows. The performers, however, Foley says it can feel like they’re on a rollercoaster. “Some singers ‘go rogue’ in performances and sing whatever they are feeling or as loudly as possible. They go off script.”

Show Day Once the day comes to perform, including GMCSF’s upcoming concert Songs of The Phoenix at The Parker on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 8pm, is when the excitement really starts to build. “I say hello to my friends, I hug them and enjoy the companionship of everyone, they are so special. I ask what to do and when. I get dressed at the venue,” Gragert said.

Once the final note fades away and the curtain comes down, Gragert says a whole new set of emotions comes over him. “It’s a mix of anxiety and happiness because I want to give my all at the concert. I will call it excitement and introspection, always excited to see how successful the concert was.”

Social interaction also sets the mood for Foley. “I look for my favorite faces. I get dressed at the venue because I don't want to wrinkle my tux on the long drive and I don't

For Foley, it'd be a til-we-meet-again moment. “It is reminiscent of the last day of summer camp. You are making sure to collect all the things you brought with you and hug as many people as possible on your way to your car.”
