President’s Report
ATONY MITCHELL President, YVMDFL
t the end of 2005, I would like to reflect on our performance over the past five years or so, in particular the continued growth and expansion the league has undergone over this period of time. Financially, the League has gone from strength to strength and continued to develop different sources of income to ease the burden from the same old people or supporters of the league. In 1999, when I first commenced as a board member, we produced a bottom line profit of $10,000; in 2000 in excess of $30,000 and for 2001 we achieved $45,000; 2002, $48,000; 2003-$27,000; 2004-$27,000 and, at the conclusion of this season, another pleasing result again of $28,000. The continued expansion, development and growth of our balance sheet is something in which I am very pleased to be involved. Being financially strong gives us the opportunity to support the existing clubs’ structure and also makes us a viable alternative to “foreign” clubs looking elsewhere. Again, this season, we will be handing back to our clubs a fair portion of our bottom line profit, via cash bonuses and/or dividends; if your club supports the league and our valued sponsors, then your club will continue to gain financial rewards.
This year has been a very positive one for the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League and I can say, without any fear of contradiction, that this year will reflect our best results both off and on the field. I am extremely proud of our efforts as we continue to grow, and these results just don’t happen, they happen because we have an extremely committed, hard working league Board.
I wish to thank each of our Board Members: Vice President Shane Smith, Directors Leo Groenewegen, Chris Prytula, Barry Stuart, Bill Heppell, Graeme Tuplin and Bob Moore. I personally wish to thank each of these individuals for their continued support and friendship over the past year. I truly appreciate your commitment and level of professionalism you have given me and the league. The other pleasing factor is the continued development of our office staff. Lori Woodcock has again performed very professionally as our Administration Officer. Lori has continued to undertake improvements with our web site, football record and administration area over the last three seasons, which is a credit to her commitment to the league. One great performance on 2005, from Lori’s point of view, was the establishment of the Yarra Valley Cougars Female Football Club; to see the progress and development of this club over this season is a true credit to Lori and her support committee, well done to all of those valued people involved.
I wish to personally thank Lori for her support of the board and the continued energy she has shown us all in the development and progress of our publications. Our performance with interleague was a little disappointing this year, however, I know the commitment of our players in 2006 will get us back on top where we rightfully belong. The efforts and time commitment required to run the interleague was nothing short of first class, thanks to the hard work and efforts of Board Members Shane Smith, Graeme Tuplin, Bob Moore & Leo Groenewegen, Senior Coach Brett Fisher, assistants Jim Martin, Damian Monkhorst and Under 18s Coach Geoff Shipp and his assistant Felix Fraraccio. Thanks to our trainers for their valued efforts: Karen, Naomi, Frances and Sriyan.
I hope that, by early next season, our joint venture with Eastern Ranges Under 18 TAC club will have progressed further. As we have stated over the past couple of years, the re-development of the old Kilsyth ground will continue and be available for the use of all our clubs. The development of a gymnasium and level one playing surface should be complete by early next season, which will be available to all of our clubs.
Our Veterans competition this season again grew, with a fantastic Finals Series, although we had some early communication problems; all Veterans Clubs and the league board are striving to ensure that this competition remains an integral part of the league. We have also made some huge steps towards getting both the Senior and Junior competitions working together - both myself and DRJFL President, Doug Evans, will be working towards a stronger relationship. Both Junior and Senior umpires this season have now combined forces, where they are in total control of their financial and administrative affairs. From all reports, this system appears to be working well and, under the guidance of both the Umpires’ President, Leigh Walters and Director of Umpiring, Steve Edwards, they have a professional group working under them. Thank you to all the Umpires for their efforts this season and I hope to see you all back next season. I look forward to seeing the continued development of our youth within the umpiring ranks, the performance of the younger umpires during our finals series was extremely pleasing to see.
Our presentation night was a great success, with approximately 280 people in attendance. The work and efforts put into our presentation was first class, thank you to our first year host, Sandy Roberts, who created a great impression for this major event and did a great job. Well done to all the worthy award winners. Special thanks to John Kehoe, Lori Woodcock and Bob Foletta for the preparation of this night and how well the night was received.
To our tribunal members, once again thank you for your efforts during 2005 and we hope that it has been an enjoyable season for you all. I wish to again pass on my personal gratitude to Bob Moore with the manner he conducts and continued professionalism he displays, with our tribunal. The members of the
President’s Report
tribunal communicate and interact extremely well with Bob to create a fully independent tribunal.
My personal thanks is extended to Rod Hayes (Business Manager), thank you for your commitment to our league, work ethic and the support you have extended to me personally and,of course, the board.
Thank you to all our Presidents, club officials, players and supporters for your involvement in our league this year and the support you continue to give clubs
within our league. I know, at times, our opinions may differ, however I hope we continue to achieve worthy results for both the clubs and league alike.
This is our second season with local radio station 3MDR of Emerald. I would like to personally thank Bob Foletta in his first season as our host, for his excellent efforts and the continued development of our weekly broadcast and gaining valued sponsorship monies. Another thank you for new boy John Kehoe, and old timer Tony Foo, who both continued to develop their personal broadcasting skills. Leo Groenewegen’s special comments add something we all wish to hear about a game of football. I am sure that everyone would agree that the professionalism of 3MDR and their support has continued to lift our broadcasts to an extremely high standard.
One final thank you is to be extended to our Football Manager, Ben O’Brien. His extremely professional development of our league, with continued development with our in-house systems and ideas have again been nothing short of first class. Ben has already secured many sponsors for season 2006 and has development ideas to continue to expand our league that are a credit to him. The support and commitment Ben has shown me over the past 3 seasons is truly appreciated and I look forward to working with Ben over the next few years. Another reason for my big wraps of Ben was his commitment and development of our Netball competition, which was his idea and is something I am sure all of our clubs that were involved would agree has been a great development for us. I would like to thank
all of the ladies involved in our first season of Netball and look forward to each and every club having two sides in both divisions next season. Thank you to our netball co-ordinator, Jenny McPherson, for her support and development of the competition. Finally, to all the Women involved with our football, thank you for your support; without you, your support and efforts you all place within our clubs and league, our game would not survive. To my wife, Kath, and my three daughters, thank you for letting me be involved with a sport I enjoy dearly.
For the season ahead, there have been some great coaching recruits and all is looking good for a very successful 2006 and beyond. Let’s continue to strive, as we state in our Mission Statement, towards “Becoming the leading Country Football League”.
Tony (Knobby) Mitchell League President
Football Manager’s Report
BEN O’BRIEN
Football Manager, YVMDFL
The 2005 season certainly turned out to be one of the more interesting in the YVMDFL’s recent history, both on and off the field, and at the time of writing this report, it still hadn’t ended, with the distinct possibility of another club joining the league for the 2006 season still yet to be resolved.
On-field, one of the best team seen in the Valley for some years took out the Division One premiership at Woori Yallock, when Monbulk defeated Silvan and gained some measure of revenge for their defeat at the hands of the Cats in last year’s Preliminary Final. In Second Division, Olinda-Ferny Creek managed a 20 goal turnaround of their second semi-final defeat by Sth Belgrave to win the grand final by 56 points at Gembrook, and the right to return to First Division in 2006, at the expense of Warburton-Millgrove. The difference in ability between the two divisions is always a source of conjecture, and it is perhaps significant that Olinda comfortably won the flag with a side that was essentially unchanged from the team that anchored the first division ladder in 2004. The League’s current policy favours a divisional structure based on ability, rather than geography, so it will be interesting to see how both Olinda and Warburton fare in their respective divisions next season – the scenario of both sides simply swapping divisions in 2007 would arguably be one accepted by the League through gritted teeth.
After several years in the pipeline, 2005 saw the first competitive matches being played at the renovated Colchester Road Reserve, and with the additional renovations being undertaken over the summer break to the pavilion and surrounds by Eastern Ranges, the ground will be an undoubted asset to the league for many years to come – our sincere thanks must go to Football Victoria, Eastern Ranges FC, the Shire of Yarra Ranges and Sportsgrass Pty Ltd for their assistance and expertise.
After some years in recess, the Yarra Ranges Sports Trainers Association was revived in 2005. With injury management and prevention becoming more important each year, it is hoped that the YRSTA will take on a key role in the continuing education, recruitment and development of club trainers, which is essential to the long-term health of clubs. My thanks to Karen Webb, Naomi Booker and Peter Dall for their enthusiasm and assistance in getting the Association up and running (again!).
netball sides were embraced by their respective clubs was (and is) a credit to all involved. The impact of netball on the social side of things at club level has also been immediately apparent, with some clubs even gaining extra committee members from their netball ranks. The large crowd that stood in the pouring rain at Woori Yallock to watch Upwey-Tecoma win the league’s first netball premiership, the introduction and acceptance of a netball best-and-fairest award to the League’s medal night and the fielding of an interleague netball side in June of this year are all testaments to the fact that netball in the YVMDFL is here to stay, and it will only get stronger in the future.
Off-field, the major news of the season actually took place after the Division One grand final, with ThorntonEildon applying to join the YVMDFL in 2006, following the dissolution of the Central Goulburn Football League (CGFL). Goulburn-Murray football was the subject of an exhaustive review that began in May of this year, with the review panel making its recommendations in August – recommendations that affected four different leagues in that region that took a further six weeks of negotiations to be put into place for next season. The key recommendation was the dissolution of the seventeam CGFL, and the placement of their clubs in neighbouring leagues, which was when the YVMDFL entered the picture, as the logical geographic alternative for Yea, Alexandra & Thornton-Eildon. In the washup, Yea are now playing in the Kyabram League and Thornton-Eildon will be part of the YVMDFL. At the time of writing this report, Alexandra has just had its appeal against its rejection by the Kyabram District League rejected by the VCFL, meaning that if Alexandra intend to compete in 2006, their only option is the YVMDFL, the only League prepared to take them in and offer them somewhere to play. In what may be a surprise to YVMDFL clubs, the major sticking point in our negotiations with those three clubs was netball (or the lack of it) in the YVMDFL – football issues were very much minor players. It is perhaps an irony (and a
The most significant development on-field (or court) this year has been the introduction of netball into the competition. They say there is no such thing as bad publicity, but to read in The Age newspaper this time last year that the YVMDFL was the only country football league without any affiliation with netball had me thinking otherwise. The decision was made at an early stage to limit the competition to first division clubs in its first season, and the enthusiasm with which the seven
Football Manager’s Report
sign-of-the-times) that where netball is well-established in country football clubs, it has such influence over decisions made at football club-level, Country football is governed by the VCFL, while Netball Victoria governs country netball – there is no “Victorian Country Netball League” existing as a separate body. The influence of netball in clubs’ decision-making processes is shaping as a major issue for those bodies to consider, and with netball in the YVMDFL in its infancy, it will certainly be an issue for us as well.
The other significant off-field issue for 2005 was the increase in turnover achieved by the League’s retail division. The financial report shows that an increased income of some 62% was recorded this year, with total League income of $522,644 being the highest on record. The League would sincerely like to thank the clubs that supported this side of the League’s operations, and we will continue to be on the lookout for ways and means of bringing better deals to clubs.
The League greatly appreciates the support of sponsors such as the Compass Group, Commodore Press, Lilydale International, Sticks Yarra Valley and those who continue to advertise in the weekly League Record, a publication which is acknowledged as one of the best in Victorian football. When you take into account that our interleague expenses were twice what we had budgeted (primarily due to airfares!), the fact that our budgeted profit was still surpassed is no small achievement – accordingly, dividend returns to clubs remained at a reasonably high level.
busiest of the past three, and without the assistance of the League’s Administration Officer, Lori Woodcock, the office would have collapsed in a screaming heap – that’s not to say that no screaming took place!! My thanks also go to Tony Mitchell and his board, all of whom can be relied upon for sound, rational advice (most of the time, anyway) across the wide range of issues that lob on my desk. Our Tribunal, under the guidance of Greg Black & Alex Lagerwey, had one of its lightest workloads in 2005 for some time, but the efforts of its members & our investigation officer, were to their usual high standard and are greatly appreciated by the league. The YRUA had one of its more difficult years in 2005, particularly on the numbers front, which makes the efforts of John & Steve Edwards and the YRUA executive, headed up by Leigh Walters, in consistently getting umpires out on our grounds, all the more meritorious. Finally, special thanks to the YVMDFL media team, headed up by Bob Foletta, who terrorised all grounds during the season from their mobile superbox; apparently, the airwaves turned blue only once, thanks to a tongue-tied John Kehoe, who will unfortunately be leaving us to work in Canberra next year – don’t forget who gave you your big break, John!
With new clubs, more football and netball to be played and the League hosting its division of the country championships, the 2006 season may very well end up being more hectic than its predecessor – the summer break is definitely getting shorter each year.

ROD HAYES Business Manager, YVMDFL
Trading Statement
The League’s profit for the 2004-05 financial year was $28,750, which was almost identical to the previous year’s results. This is a satisfactory result in a year when substantial cost increases were incurred compared to the previous year. Another strong financial result is testament to the focus and drive of the board in carrying out the League’s business on behalf of its member clubs. Total revenue was $522,644, compared to the previous year of $390,202. The 34% increase in revenue arose mainly from sale of goods up 62%, finals up 28% and interleague receipts up 114%. Finals’ gate reimbursements to players were included as both income and expenditure items for the first time in 2005. This resulted in approximately $10,000 being received from players (and then returned to clubs) which contributed 50% of the increased income, and 71% of the increased cost, of finals in 2005. The sponsorship from Commodore Press that offsets the cost of the League Record was also included as both an income and
expenditure item in 2005, unlike in 2004.
Expenses on the Colchester Road Reserve totalled $7,923, which was the League’s 50% of the cost of total works – the other 50% was paid by Eastern Ranges FC. These consisted of the preparation of a master plan for the reserve and associated survey works, and these were “once-off” expenses. Sincere thanks must go to Shire of Yarra Ranges Mayor, David Hodgett, for his contribution of $2,500 towards the project. With on-field works almost complete, and Football Victoria looking to fund further development of the venue, the League will be aiming to keep future League expenditure on the venue to a reasonable (and affordable) level.
General expenses and specific costs totalled $493,894 compared to $361,421 in the previous year. The increase in the cost of sales was the major contributor to the overall expenditure increase. However, the gross margin on sales improved from 21.9% to 24.1%. A pleasing result considering the large increased in sales.
Interleague costs were $43,658 compared to $15,790 in 2004. This increase was mainly associated with the additional cost of air travel compared to coach travel in the previous year. Also, for the first time, the League’s representative netball team took part in the interleague event. While the VCFL made additional grants available, these funds were off set against the League’s contribution to the payout to the VCFL Interleague central pool.
As of October 31, 2005
Balance She
The financial position of the League, as demonstrated in the balance sheet, remains strong. Dividends to clubs now total $135,471, with the board declaring a $20,000 dividend for the 2005 year. Distributed dividends represent a large financial bonus to the clubs and these have been achieved while maintaining a solid financial
base for the League from which other club benefits can be pursued eg Kilsyth reserve.
The strength of the League has been helpful in providing temporary financial support to those clubs that find themselves with funding difficulties.
In August 2005, representatives of the Emerald Football Club met with members of the League board to discuss the financial position of the club. As a result of these meetings, $8,271.58 of the club’s trading account debt was transferred from the League’s Accounts Receivable to Sundry Debtor – Clubs. Unfortunately, the club has not been able to meet the commitment given to the League. Further discussions are currently taking place to resolve the problem. Under the original agreement, if the Emerald FC defaulted on its commitments, the club would not participate in the League’s 2005 dividend. The Seville football Club once again found itself in a difficult financial position and payments under the original agreement with the League have been temporarily suspended. The club did manage to reduce its loan account by $1,950 during the 2005 financial year.

LEO GROENEWEGEN Senior Interleague Co-ordinator Director, YVMDFL
This year marked the second year of the VCFL’s roundrobin format, which proved a success across all leagues last year. In what was an interesting logistical exercise for all concerned, the League flew 80 players and officials to Mildura to compete in Pool “D” of the WorkSafe VCFL Country Championships, where we took on Sunraysia and Nth Central/Mallee (who we played last year) and the Murray FL who had been relegated from the division above. In addition, apart from taking senior and U18 football teams , it was the first time the YVMDFL took along a representative netball team. Both grounds used over the course of the weekend were located within the same complex in Mildura, with the larger of the two being located within the boundaries of the local trotting track. It would be safe to say that the smaller of the two grounds was a large one by YVMDFL
standards, while the bigger ground had dimensions similar to those of the MCG. Both were presented in immaculate condition, and the warmer weather added to the spectacle.
Our first game on Saturday was against the Nth Central/ Mallee FL. The first half saw the YVMDFL trail by 7 points, but a great effort in the second half saw the YVMDFL kick 5.6 to 3.5 to record a 9.10(64) to 8.10(58) win. Our second game on the Saturday was against the host league in Sunraysia. The YVMDFL started well, at one stage leading by 5 goals during the first half; unfortunately, Sunraysia fought back in the final 3-4 minutes of the first half to only trail 6.1(37) to 4.5(29). In the second half, Sunraysia ran all over a tiring YVMDFL, kicking 7.8 to 2.0 to defeat the YVMDFL 11.13(79) to 8.1(49), in what was a very disappointing result for the team. On Sunday, the YVMDFL took on the Murray FL, who had won both their games the previous day. After an even first half, in which Murray FL led by 2 points (3.4 to 3.2), the YVMDFL held sway early in the second half, only to tire and let Murray FL win 7.9 (51) to 6.3(39). Despite the result, the pleasing thing to come out of this game was the knowledge that when our side applied themselves fully to the task

at hand, they were more than capable of matching it with, in this case, the best side in the competition. It was still disappointing for the players, coach and staff and supporters to not come away with the championship, something I am sure will be looked at for next year’s championships. Best players for the YVMDFL were Ben Farrugia (Mt Evelyn),- player of the championships for YVMDFL, Chris Goodlet (Silvan), David Mazins (Silvan), Danny Ryan (Woori Yallock), Andrew Shipp (Gembrook-Cockatoo), Craig Clarke (Gembrook-Cockatoo), Dustin Apps (Sth Belgrave), and Vin Dunstan (Monbulk).
Many thanks to the Gembrook and Nth Croydon clubs for allowing us to use their grounds for training and for providing the meals on the last night of training for both senior & U18 squads. I would like to thank our trainers, led by Karen Webb (Silvan), Naomi Booker (Silvan), Frances van der Weele (Mt Evelyn) and Sriyan ‘Bob’ Peries (Seville). I would also like to thank our coaching staff: Brett Fisher, Damian Monkhorst (Woori Yallock), Jim Martin (Mt Evelyn), Carl Barker (Selector/Runner), & Gavin Rutherford(Olinda Ferny Creek)(Selector/ Runner). I would also like to thank the many supporters and familiar faces, for making the effort to come and support the YVMDFL. Finally to our sponsors; WorkSafe, Compass and REX Airlines, many thanks. With the possibility of the YVMDFL hosting interleague next year, I can assure you we will all be working towards a better result next year.

This year, we traveled to Mildura by plane on the Friday which, for some of the boys, was their first flight ever. Our preparation over the previous 5 weeks had gone well and with an expectation of improving on our 2004 result this year we made the early flight out. This year, we had only a handful of players that had played the previous year and so we had a high number of guys getting their first taste of eighteens interleague.
The conditions in Mildura were perfect and our first game was against North Central/ Mallee. Whilst we were a bit slow out of the blocks in the scoring department in the first quarter, we saw the boys starting to come together and implementing the team rules, which in the second
half saw us run out with a comfortable win 4.8 (32) to 2.3 (15).
Our biggest challenge was before us in Game Two, when we were to come up against the host league in Sunraysia. Once again, our scoring in the first half got off to a slow start and whilst we did have some opportunities, we didn’t make the most of them which saw us trailing by 2 goals at the half. In the second half, we got off to a much better start and kicked some early goals which put the pressure back on Sunraysia, however we were not able to sustain the pressure and, in the end, Sunraysia ran out winners 7.5(47) to 4.3(27). Whilst this was a bit disappointing, we had to make sure that we had a big win in our next game on the Sunday and rely on an upset win over Sunraysia to have a chance at taking the title.
On the Sunday, our start was fantastic and we saw the ball move into our scoring zone quickly and to our advantage. This allowed us to get scoreboard pressure on Murray League and in the end we ran out

comfortable winners 10.9(69) to 1.1(7). Unfortunately, there was to be no fairytale win by North Central/ Mallee and Sunraysia were again crowned champions. Our best player of the carnival went to Bradley Condor, who had an outstanding carnival which led to Brad being picked in the VCFL East v West game, for which he was also voted best on ground for the East - well done Brad. Other players that contributed over the carnival were Brendon Sneddon our captain, Matt Lewis, John Noonan & Jarrod Martin . I would like to close by once again thanking Geoff Shipp for his time and commitment in coaching the boys, Felix Fraraccio for taking on the team manger’s role this year, Robbo, Karen and the trainers for their welcome efforts and the many parents who made the trip to Mildura – our supporters actually outnumbered those of the host league! Lastly, thank you to the boys for the way they carried themselves.

ANITA WOODS
Netball Interleague Coach
The Interleague weekend for the netballers was a fantastic experience for all concerned. We went up there not really sure how we would go compared to the other leagues, all of whom have had netball in place for many years.
With the YVMDFL Netball competition only 6 week into its first year, picking a side was quite difficult, as players had not found their feet or gelled with their own teams by that early stage.
After only 2 training sessions, the side was selected and we headed off to Mildura. Our first issue, before we even hit the court, was how we were going to overcome the surface of grass, with none of us having played on grass before - we were looking
fought game. We were down by 5 at half time, but we held them in the second half to go down, in the end, by 6. The girls came away thinking the result could’ve been a little bit closer, so we were looking forward to our next match.
2 was against a young, quick and zippy Sunraysia FL, who were just too good and we lost by 13 points. Unfortunately, our last game was against Murray FL (who ended up winning the competition) due in no small part to their 6’4” goaler, who was a definite challenge. As it was, we went down by 11 points, which was a satisfactory result, considering the standard of the opposition and how the other two leagues had fared against them.
was extremely proud of the girls and I would like to congratulate the team on a job well done - even with no wins on the board, we were more than competitive and we have learnt plenty of lessons for the 2006 championships.
Congratulations to Jade Hottes (left), who received best player for the YVMDFL side.
big thanks to all the girls & helpers for a great weekend and I would like to thank the league for giving me the opportunity to coach the girls and be a part of the tournament.
Yarra Ranges Umpires Association
STEPHEN EDWARDS
Director of Umpiring, YRUA
Season 2005 was a year of many challenges for umpiring in the Yarra Valley. The season started with the reality that we had lost 10 senior field umpires, equating to approximately 20% of the total field umpires we require each week. Replacing numbers is never easy but it is especially challenging when we lose the caliber of umpire that we did.
Fortunately, we were able to replace the lost numbers and maintain our reputation of being able to provide a minimum of two field umpires in every game played. The challenge going forward will be to develop our new and younger umpires to take them to the next level as adequate replacements for the experience that has been lost.
In addition to the loss of field umpires, there was also a large turnaround in our boundary umpire numbers. The end result was that there were a number of games during the year where we could not provide boundary umpires and had to call on clubs to help to fill the breach. In this regard, thank you to the clubs who did provide assistance when required, particularly Yarra Junction and Emerald who both offered the services of their reserves Boundary Umpires.
The reduction in numbers is not new to local football, although having said this, Yarra Valley has been very fortunate in the past. The reasons for shortages are wide and varied, with the one common theme being ‘Umpire Abuse’. There are far too many times when players, officials and spectators overstep the mark and take the abuse to a level which is over and above what any person on the street would be expected to tolerate. I don’t know what the answer is, however it is definitely something that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Whilst the AFL’s tough stance on umpire abuse is often ridiculed, the bottom line is that their stance is directly aimed at trying to preserve the integrity of umpiring right down to the grass roots. If
we could somehow adopt a similar approach I am sure that the benefits would be significant.
On a more positive note, there were some very encouraging signs in terms of the development of our younger umpires. In particular, Josh Krull and Cameron Barr at the ages of 19 and 18, respectively, both officiated as Field Umpires in the 1st Division Senior Grand Final. Josh has received an invite to trial with the VFL, while Cameron was the winner of the VFL Golden Whistle award. Both have promising umpiring careers in front of them and are great examples of our ability to find and develop quality umpires.
In addition to the development of our younger umpires, it was great to see some of our more senior umpires make the most of their opportunity to umpire a higher level of football and/or senior finals. Some of these guys have been waiting in the wings for a few years and certainly made the most of their opportunities when they presented. Hopefully the progress that they have made this year will provide the motivation to continue their improvement next year.
Congratulations to the winners of the John Edwards medal for season 2005 being Josh Krull (field), Samuel Lai (boundary) and Harold Marsh (goal).
Well done to all those umpires who officiated in milestone games during the year and to those fortunate enough to achieve a Grand Final appointment. For those umpires who missed out on a Grand Final, we say thank you for your valuable contribution during the year.
Thank you to the League Board for their support of umpiring during season 2005, in particular Ben O’Brien, Lori Woodcock, Bob Moore and the Barry Stewart. In closing I would like to thank my umpires board comprising John Edwards (Secretary/Observer), Shane Mason (Fitness Coach), Wayne Pasco (Observer) Craig Tyrrell (Boundary Coach) and Andrew Marshall (Goal Coach) for their support and contribution to umpiring in season 2005. Also thank you to Leigh Walters (President of the Umpires Association) and his committee for their ongoing support of the Umpires Board and their dedication to the smooth running of the Umpires Association.

ou will notice from the summary of reports for Season 2005 that the total number of reports that were heard reduced to 23, and the total weeks’ suspension was 27. Since the year 2000, the number of reports has steadily reduced from 61, to this year’s total of 23, which is the lowest for the last 10 years. This is a fair indication that the standard of umpiring and the professionalism of the players within our League have improved beyond all expectations.
All clubs within the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League are to be congratulated on this achievement; we should still strive to reduce reportable incidents
further in Season 2006.
Season 2005 saw the League Board appoint Messrs Greg Black and Alex Lagerwey as joint Chairmen.
As in Season 2004, all panel members were rostered for the season. The League Board acknowledges the following members: Fury Di Pietro, Greg Tippett, Ken McMaster, Merv Neal, Don Carey, Harold Bromley and Bill Dunstan. The League Board would also like to express its gratitude for the professional approach that they pursued in this role.
Other appointments for the season were Reporting Officers, Keith Thompson and Ron Jones, and Investigation Officer, Paul Aarons. The League Board acknowledges the professional manner that these appointments also pursued in their respective roles.
It is the intention of the Board to seek expressions of interest from potential Independent Player Advocates for season 2006, whose duties will be to represent players from all clubs within the League.
FBOB
MOORE Director, YVMDFL
or Season 2005, the League Board set the Salary Cap for Division One (Major League) at $40,000 excluding payment to one player or one coach. Division Two (District League) was set at $30,000, including all coach and player payments.
All clubs within the YVMDFL are responsible for the maintenance of accurate records of payments made to coaches and players and must submit a payment budget for the season, three (3) monthly returns and a full financial statement for Season 2005.
The League Board will review the Salary Cap policy for Season 2006, and all clubs will be given adequate notice for the forthcoming season of any policy changes and reporting procedures.
The League Board thanks and congratulates all clubs for the support given to the Salary Cap in Season 2005.
The Season That Was
round one
The division one season kicked off with reigning premier Silvan unfurling its premiership flag at home against Monbulk. But it was the only elation the Cats enjoyed for the day, new Monbulk coach Chris Hughson leading his chargers to an impressive 27-point win. Upwey-Tecoma claiming top spot after round one, accounting for Mt Evelyn by 36-points, Chris Hayes best on ground with five goals.
round two
In round two, Silvan rebounded after its horror start the week before, accounting for Warburton- Millgrove by 56 points, new recruit David Mazins bagging six goals. Travis Cox and Gary Moorcroft best for the Cats. Former Fremantle Docker Andrew Shipp led Gembrook to its maiden victory since re-entering division one, holding off Woori Yallock by a solitary point. And Craig Horne bagged nine, to lead Monbulk to an 86-point win over Healesville.
round three
Wandin’s 1985 premiership side witnessed the Dogs triumph over Belgrave in round three, Michael King the victors’ best. Six goals from Danny Williamson ensured Woori Yallock registered its second win of the year accounting for Healesville.
round four
Gembrook announced its arrival to the premier division in round four, thrashing Wandin by 84 points. Paul Sankey best on ground for the Brookers, chipping in with three goals. While Mt Evelyn won its first game, the Rovers prevailing over Warburton-Millgrove by 15 points, Chris Tesoriero named the victors best.
round
five
In round 5 Gembrook continued its good form by eclipsing Silvan, coach Matt O’Neil booting seven and All-Australian Country ruckman Craig Clarke at his dominating best. A huge Sunday crowd witnessed Healesville hold off a fast finishing Wandin at the Kennel, Benn Litchfield and Wayne Anderson troubling the statsman.
round six
Despite outstanding games from coach Chris Hughson and captain Vincent Dunstan, Monbulk’s unblemished run to an end in round six at the hands of Upwey Tecoma. Ash Thompson managing four goals, Chris Hayes and Jason O’Donnell outstanding in the midfield. Eight goals from David Mazins wasn’t enough for the injury riddled Silvan, Healesville taking the honours by 11 points. The Bloods big names of Conrau, DeMunk, Stolartzyk and Luke Barclay all standing tall. Meanwhile, in the 3MDR match of the day, Mt Evelyn made a memorable comeback against Belgrave, in the bottom of the table clash. And in a big round of football, Warburton dug deep for its second win, Vincent Muccitelli bagging seven and Ben Farrugia running rampant to get the Burras over Gembrook.
round seven
In round seven, Wandin smashed premiership contender Upwey-Tecoma by 11 goals to record its fourth win, Brad Christiansen dominant around the ground. And Silvan defeated Woori-Yallock, to salvage something heading into the interleague break, Gary Moorcroft and Chris Goodlet amongst the best, Danny Williamson booting seven for the Tigers.
round eight
On the Queen’s Birthday weekend in division one, Upwey-Tecoma scored some revenge in the grand final rematch against Silvan, Steve Brotja kicking three for the Tigers. While Warburton-Millgrove easily accounted for a disappointing Woori Yallock, midfielders Ben Farrugia and Adam Newing pairing well in the midfield. Luke Meiszies and Vincent Muccitelli bagging six goals each, the V-Train taking his total to 46 after eight rounds.
round nine
In round 9, Monbulk sent a fierce message to the competition at the half way mark of the season, with a 114 point thumping of fourth placed Gembrook. The Hawks had twelve individual goal kickers, while Gembrook managed only six majors for the match, Jarrod Clarke and Adam Gee sensational for the Hawks. Paul Bartlett pulled in a strong contender for mark of the year.
Belgrave lifted itself off the bottom of the ladder, travelling to Healesville to cause one of the upsets of the season. Paul Ferguson dominating in the ruck and Marcus Stow working beautifully at ground level and the Beatle, Paul McCartney, strutting his talents. Matthew Prytula bagged four for the Pies. 10 goals from the VTrain wasn’t enough to stop Upwey-Tecoma prevailing over the Burras.
round ten
In round 10 Monbulk recorded its third consecutive belting of a finals contender, this time against Silvan at home, Luke Tolliday booting seven in a best on ground performance. At the bottom end of the ladder, the relegation race was heating up, Belgrave wining its second match on the trot at the expense of Woori Yallock, despite a superb performance from Tigers captain Danny Ryan. Now four teams were separated by just one game to stave off the fall to Division Two.
round eleven
A new genuine contender arose in round 11, as Healesville underlined its September aspirations, defeating ladder leader Monbulk by four points - Luke Barclay best on ground for the Bloods. At the other end of the table Mt Evelyn upset Wandin, to record its third win of the season, Jon Dalton back to his scintillating best.
round twelve
In round 12 Gembrook’s premiership reunion teams witnessed the Brookers upset Upwey-Tecoma, despite kicking just six goals in wet and slippery conditions. Craig Clarke and Andrew Shipp turned it on for the old timers. Wandin held off a gritty Belgrave, Ben Brisbane booting five, to set up a battle for fifth spot with the men in green.
The Season That Was
round thirteen
In round 13, the Dogs went a game clear of the Brookers, defeating its rivals by 24 points at home - Brad Christiansen best on ground in his second consecutive game. Healesville grabbed second spot on the ladder from Upwey-Tecoma, accounting for the Tigers by 44 points, Luke Barclay and Brendan Murphy the chief enforcers. At the other end of the table, Mt Evelyn went a game clear of bottom spot, despite the best efforts of Warburton stalwart Mick Walker. Five goals from Toby O’Meara got the Rovers over the line in a seasondefining win.
round fourteen
Silvan began to peak in round 14, smashing Gembrook by 79 points to move to third on the ladder and entertain the thought of a premiership defence. The class of Moorcroft and Goodlet shone through for the Cats. But the big news was breaking at the Woori Yallock v Upwey Tecoma game.
In one of the most perplexing events in the league’s recent history, Woori Yallock called for a head count against Upwey-Tecoma after Damien Monkhorst and Ken Meredith were yellow carded. Somehow, the Mountain Tigers had mistakenly replaced Meredith. But the result was never in doubt, the Valley Tigers piling on 18 goals to win by 71 points to reignite their finals chances.
And despite sporting a nasty black eye the following day, Monkhorst was spotted at Healesville to witness the Bloods demolish Wandin in the Sunday encounter, Simon Gordon unstoppable, booting 10 goals for the match.
round fifteen
Round 15 saw Silvan continue its late season charge downing second-placed Healesville by 11 points, Brent Loughton kicking five for the Cats. Woori Yallock moved within one game of the top-five, smashing fellow contender Wandin by 67 points, the trio of Monkhorst, Armstrong and Daniel Williamson, combining for 15 goals. And nine goals from Vincent Muccitelli and eight majors from Toby O’Meara helped Warburton-Millgrove and Mt Evelyn to crucial victories to avoid relegation.
round sixteen
Woori Yallock’s late season flurry continued in round 16, upsetting Silvan by 40 points, Patrick Sharp and Danny Ryan the best for the Tigers. Wandin held its place in the five with a 21 point win over Upwey-Tecoma, Daniel and Michael King leading the Dogs’ form reversal. And Mt Evelyn continued its late season form, eclipsing Gembrook by 13 points. The trusty names of Chris Haworth and Jon Dalton among the best for the Rovers.
round seventeen
The league went on show in round 17, hosting the WorkSafe VCFL’s match of the month, between Monbulk and Wandin. The Hawks prevailed by 47 points over the gallant Dogs…Adam Gee winning the best on ground medal awarded by the legendary Ronald Dale Barassi. Meanwhile, a goal after the siren by youngster
Tim Williamson handed Woori-Yallock a one-point victory over Warburton, the Tigers moving into the final five for the first time since round 3. And Belgrave moved a game clear of relegation, belting Gembrook by 52 points, Paul Ferguson booting five for the Magpies.
round eighteen
Fifth spot was still on the line entering the final round of the season. Wandin kept its chances alive upsetting Silvan by a goal in a low scoring affair, Gary Moorcroft a contender for votes from the men in white. Upwey confirmed a finals appearance with its first win in eight weeks, handing Warburton the wooden spoon in the process. Brent Coviello and Jason O’Donnell the Tigers best, the Burras Vincent Muccitelli claiming the league’s goal kicking title with 87 majors. Gembrook’s season ended with a heart-breaking one point loss to Monbulk, Luke Tolliday bagging seven goals to finish with 54 for the season. And Woori-Yallock won its fifth game in succession to claim the remaining finals spot, after a 34 point win over Mt Evelyn, Danny Ryan starring for the Tigers.
And that was the season that was in 2005.

BOB FOLETTA
YVMDFL Media
2005 saw the inclusion of two new members to the media team, John Kehoe and myself, who joined Leo Groenewegen and Tony Foo in the brand new “media mobile”. The season started off slowly for us but we steadily progressed into a very tight team that saw us take calling Yarra Valley football to a new level. The season offered us so many fantastic games to call, with all clubs being live on the 3MDR-97.1FM airwaves at least once for the season, with the preliminary final between Silvan and Healesville an absolute standout match . All clubs welcomed us, and the media team would like to thank them for their efforts on game day in making sure we were able to broadcast without fuss. The assistance of the team at 3MDR on game days was also much appreciated as, without their help, we would not be on the air!!
The finals series this year in both divisions provided some great footy - here is a recap of what happened in those matches.
Commodore Press Division Two Seniors
In the Elimination Final, Seville took on Powelltown and showed why they shouldn’t be taken out of calculation for the flag, as they ran out convincing 57 point winners. Seville had winners all over the ground that day with Costigan, Wilson and Atkins being judged the best afield in tough, windy conditions. The 2nd Semi Final was played between the top two sides all season, Olinda v. South Belgrave. In a lightning start, South jumped Olinda to take a handy lead and extended it as the game went on to run out eventual winners by 48 points and move directly into the grand final. Preliminary Final day saw a confident Seville take on Olinda, in what looked to be a tight contest on paper. Olinda jumped out of the blocks and never gave the Blues a chance and, with a 75 point hiding, Olinda moved into the grand final for another crack at the Saints. Grand Final day saw a big crowd at Gembrook and the first quarter provided 11 goals at a pace that was going to take its toll on someone. The Olinda outfit proved to be the more disciplined and was able to record a 54 point win and provide the likes of Tim and Mick Scott with premiership glory. Young Olinda player Nick Broomhall was judged best afield.
Compass Group Division One Seniors
Elimination Final day was a battle between two tigers, (Woori Yallock v Upwey), with the Woori boys taking the better form into the match. Well, form meant nothing, as the boys from Upwey put on a clinical display of team football to easily account for Woori by 67 points. The Qualifying Final was played between Silvan and Healesville, with both sides giving it everything, and it was the Bloods who ran out winners to move into a second semi final showdown with ladder leaders, Monbulk. The 2nd Semi was played in warm conditions at Yarra Junction, with the Hawks showing why they finished on top of the ladder and were favourites for the flag. Gee and Mullinder were best for Monbulk in the 47 point win, while Stolartzyk was best for the Bloods. In a hard fought out 1st Semi Final, the Cats put to rest any hopes the Upwey side had of September glory. Big David Mazins proved to be the difference with a big bag of goals for the Cats as they won by 5 points. Preliminary Final day proved to be one of the best games of the season, between Silvan and Healesville in wet conditions. Both sides played to the final siren, with a shot at goal in the
Finals Report
last seconds from Healesville’s Ricky Hay hitting the goal post as the siren sounded - Silvan ran out 5 point winners in another thriller for Cats’ fans. Grand Final day was to be more of the same (weather-wise) with Monbulk and Silvan pitted against each other in a torrid clash in wet and muddy conditions. Both sides went at each other but it was the Hawks who were a little more accurate in front of goal which sealed the Cats’ fate. Only 6 goals were kicked for the game - with Monbulk having 5 of those it was enough for them to take home a welldeserved 2005 premiership.
Next year, the media team looks forward to once again taking leaps and bounds in its coverage of Yarra Valley football and we hope that all clubs will play a bigger part in the match day coverage. I would personally like to firstly thank the League for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the media team, as it has given me a greater appreciation of all clubs involved within the league. I would also like to thank Ben and Lori for their help through out the year, Leo, John and Tony for the parts that they played in the coverage and to all the clubs who welcomed us to their grounds on Saturdays. Look forward to a bigger and more exciting season 2006.
