FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER:
Mr Dean Rice
Our competitions continue to grow with our regions and as part of our commitment to our football and netball communities the AFL Yarra Ranges would like to give everyone an update as to what is and has been happening within our region in 2016.
Our move to Lilydale has been extremely positive and I feel the move to a larger facility has assisted our overall productivity greatly.
A special thankyou is extended to Mick Hill for his mowing of our grass around the office and ensuring the property is neat and tidy.
The Commissioners with the support of Luke Mc Cormick our General Manager, and FDM Dean Rice have continued to monitor clubs on development progress at both Junior and Senior club levels; this is to gain knowledge of issues or concerns each and every club may have. This will be an ongoing process with our aim to review all clubs during 2017 and undertake another club health check.
The support and transparency of all clubs and club officials this season has been appreciated by both the staff, commissioners and both committees.
One key initiative undertaken by AFL Victoria is the much talked about Community Club Sustainability Program, for 2016 and the salary cap will be implemented from season 2017, with division one set at $120,000 and division two at $ 80,000.
Victorian football (inclusive all Metro Leagues) have bought into this assessment process and the proposed state-wide player points and salary cap system have been formally agreed by the state bodies. The working party has been operational for 3 years now, which I’ve had the privilege of being involved with. I’ve found the working party a fruitful experience with some great ideas and debate coming from our numerous meetings over this period of time.
I’d like to thank all of the Senior Clubs for their input and reports they submitted, this is critical to ensure we have an accurate view of where we are at and heading as a football competition. We understand there have been some concerns, but we as a region are happy to support every senior club where we can and continue to assess needs on a case by case basis.
AFL Yarra Ranges have formed a sub-committee to manage and overview both the player point system and the future salary cap requirements and these include Shane Smith, Mick Hill, Luke Mc Cormick and with
my involvement at region level. Accurate and precise records must be kept by our clubs and ourselves and manage this critical process.
It is critical for our competition to retain Premium Football Competition status i.e. winning interleague games at senior level. We need to ensure our competition retains its current ranking or better, to protect our region for the future.
In summary, if we lose our Premium League ranking, we would fall below our as other neighbouring Leagues, Eastern Division One, Northern Division One, Southern Football League, AFL South East and AFL Gippsland reducing our players by one point compared to these competitions.
Therefore, inter-league representation and support by all players, clubs and committees is a must and I ask that all clubs support this concept moving forward. We as a competition achieved a great result this season under the guidance of Danny Ryan, Mick Mc Grath, Damian Monkhorst, Tim Wragg, Dean Rice and Daniel Collins at senior level and Simon Blackney and his team at Under 19 level. I’d like to also thank Daren Pryor and his dedicated junior inter-league coaches on achieving some fantastic results this past season. Our commitment to junior development and opportunities for our youth to progress in our sport is a focus of AFL Yarra Ranges.
The appointment of two representatives from each Board / Executive of both the Senior and Junior Leagues onto the commission and with the creation of two new committees, one each for the Senior & Junior competitions has enhanced our communication to all affiliates. The support and progress of these committees has been nothing short of fantastic and I feel the streamlining of this structure into a strategic based commission is the most effective vision moving forward. We have finalise our regional strategic plan for 2016-2018 and I hope we continue to strive towards the changes and developments within this plan.
In 2016, we have delivered an extensive range of programs to schools across the Yarra Ranges region. Our role with schools is to promote the brand of AFL football so kids become interested in the game and that transfers into them playing games in school, playing locally at clubs, being involved at Auskick centres or umpiring within our competitions.
Up to this point in time, we have visited schools or delivered an AFL program to 95% of the schools in the
region. We have made 93 visits or delivered AFL programs to local schools promoting the AFL message and brand. An estimated 4000 plus kids in the Yarra Ranges have had some exposure in one or more of our programs.
AFL Yarra Ranges region has 16 Auskick centres with 95% of them aligned to local junior clubs. These centres play an important role as an introductory program into Australian Football and provides a pathway into a junior structured competition
The Auskick program in 2016 across the state, has faced some major challenges with the change in Auskick packs and the delivery of those packs. This has had a flow on effect to Auskick participation numbers across the state with participation down by about 4500 kids which is around 10%. However, with the focus of the commission at the start of this year and the support of all Auskick centre coordinators and volunteers, AFL Yarra Ranges region has gone against the state trend and had an increase in participation numbers of around 7%. This is the biggest increase in the state! This is an encouraging sign that the commission is on the right direction in continuing to try and grow the game in the Yarra Ranges region. Congratulations to Dean Rice and his GDO’s in achieving this result.
Dean has struck a great relationship with Eastern Ranges via their Talent Manager Len Villani, Len is committed in giving our youth a opportunity to develop within their programs and has meet several times with the junior development team. Looking forward in seeing this area of our region continue to grow and offer skills and development for our youth.
Other reviews of our football structure will be commenced during 2016 and this will involve consultation processes with all stakeholders, we must ensure we evolve with our community changes and youth demands.
The development of the Eastern Region Girls competition this year jointly with the EFL has been a massive success for AFL Yarra Ranges. I’d like to extend my thanks to Emily McKee, Dean Rice and to EFL’s Aaron Bailey for the hours of work and commitment they have given our girl’s football within our joint competitions. Great work to all involved with our girls football.
I would like to thank my fellow commissioners for their support, ideas, great debates and most importantly their continue commitment in ensuring our football and netball continues to grow within our region.
Many thanks to my Deputy Chair Doug Evans, commissioners, Rob Allen, Karen De Villiers, Leo Groenewegen, Andy Gibbons and Kelly Stokes for their work and support this year.
I’d like to pass on my gratitude and thanks to Mark Sargent previous Deputy Chair for his support and commitment have gave me whilst involved with AFL Yarra Ranges, very much appreciated and I wish him all the best with his future endeavours.
Additionally, I’d like to express a my Special Thanks, to both the Senior and Junior Committees for their continued support of our football and netball within our region. Without these people driving for change the commission model would not have been as affective as it has been, many thanks again for your continued support.
At the commencement of the 2016 season, we spoke to both umpiring director’s groups on the basis of assessing a combined structure in both junior and senior groups. After assessing this process with the umpires directors and association, I’m pleased to advise the structure has worked well with a positive and professional approach from the umpiring directors and the association. I would like to pass on my special thanks to John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Trevor McGary, Bob Allen, Alan Ashmore, Brendan McKenna, Warwick Marsh, Peter Dixon, Patrick Van Dyk, Andrew Eggington, Leigh Walters, Les King and Bryan Sultana is their commitment to bettering our umpiring this past season. I look forward working with this group of gentleman next season, with the exception of Alan Ashmore. Alan has decided to retire and I’d thank him personally for his efforts over many years now.
To our office employees lead by Luke McCormick and supported by Cameron Hutchison, Gayle Seeger and Alex Woods, I truly appreciate the support you have given me and our volunteers over the past 12 months. Without your work ethic and commitment in making our sport/s enjoyable we would not have achieved what we have thus far. Many thanks again.
To our affiliate members and club volunteers, thank you for the many hours of tireless work you commit into our game year in year out. I’m looking forward working with you all in 2017 and beyond.
Tony (Knobby) Mitchell AFL Yarra Ranges Chair
Season 2016 has passed so quickly and as such, preparations for 2017 are underway.
The new offices in Lilydale are now in full swing, the YVMDFNL is no more and we are now known as the AFL Yarra Ranges Football & Netball, operating under a commission based structure, with Committees of Management for both Senior and Junior running the everyday operations.
On a sad note, we say farewell to RGM Luke McCormick, who has decided to take a new direction. He leaves us with the very best of wishes. I’m sure Luke will not be lost to our league and I would not be surprised to see him back in some way in the future.
With the excitement of a new year, all clubs have great expectations; some will reach those expectations and some won’t. That’s the thrill of competition!
To all our member clubs, I thank them and their committees/volunteers for their continued support of football/netball, as without their efforts, our communities would be in a bad way.
Our finals series this year were once again very exciting with great crowds supporting their respective teams. I would like to congratulate all our Premiership winning teams, and hope we have another great year in 2017.
To our hosting clubs, I thank you for providing the best possible surface to show off our football and netball. Of course, without the support of sponsors, none of this would be possible.
To our Business and Naming rights sponsor- The Bendigo Community Banks, we say a big thankyou for your ongoing support within the local community, as you do throughout Victoria.
Our sponsors throughout our League were:
Division 1: Bendigo Community Bank
Division 2: Tara Press
U18’s: Yarra Valley Motor Group
Division 1 Reserves: Champion Teamwear
Division 2 Reserves: YV Rodeo
Veterans: YV Financial Services
Netball: Greenstone Vineyards
Goal/Mark of the year: YVFM99.1
Function Venue: YV Racing
Interleague: Leisure Pools
We sincerely thank their genuine support and hope that we as a Community League do their companies proud.
To our broadcast partners, YVFM99.1, we appreciate the enthusiasm and support you show toward local sport.
With your Friday night football/netball show (Liam Barnard) and the pre-game show with Simone and David, indicates your commitment to the local community.
A big thankyou to Rod Ball for making this all possible. It was with great sadness that we said goodbye to my broadcasting mate Tony Foo prior to our season. He was and will be sadly missed in our “ Foo Mobile”.
Valley Vision once again brought our game to everyone’s home, here and overseas, via live streaming, as well as video replays, highlights, etc... and Jason Sach needs a big thankyou for the amount of time he puts in to get the show on every week.
Interleague was once again on the agenda, this time at home. We took on the might of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football/Netball League at Healesville. This year we fielded two netball and two football teams. We came away with good wins in both netball teams and our senior football teams. Our U19’s lost, but played extremely well after qtr time.
Next year we take on Gippsland again!
To our coaching staff, Danny Ryan (senior football), Simon Blackney (U19’s football), Sarah Hogan (open netball) and Rachel Hickey (17&under netball), we say well done!
We are very lucky to have a loyal band of volunteers who have been a part of Interleague for many years.
Thanks go to: Karen Webb, Frances Van Der Weele, Rachel Credlin, Nat Tesoriero and Kevin Brown.
A big thankyou to Joy Murphy, for once again being our League Patron and spreading the word about our competitions.
Umpires are the most important component of any sporting organisation, and we are very lucky to have a group within our league, led by director of umpiring, Trevor McGary. To his off-siders, the Godfather John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Bob Allen, Tony Cross and Allen Ashmore we say thankyou and well done doing a job not many people could do.
This year our Presentation night moved to the surrounds of YV Racing in Yarra Glen. I congratulate all
the award winners, and acknowledge the magnificent job done by MC Rick Wall.
To our office staff, led by RGM Luke McCormick, Cam Hutchison (Commercial & Regional Operations Manager), Gayle Seeger (Administration Officer), Dean Rice (FDM), thankyou for efforts this year.
To our AFL YR Commission, led by Chair Tony Mitchell, we appreciate the work done in directing our league into a more professional era of governance.
To my fellow COM Directors, Jodi Chandler, Judy Orren, Mick Hill, Mike Fleming, Bill Kuys, Bill Heppell and Shane Smith, thankyou for your continued efforts, ideas, involvement within our league.
To our wives, husbands, partners, thankyou for allowing us to do what we love doing.
Finally, to our member clubs, thankyou for your continued support and input through season 2016, and I hope to see you all in season 2017.
Leo Groenewegen Chairman Senior COM.
This season was a rollercoaster ride!! Even before the season had commenced we had 4 very experienced and knowledgeable people resign from the Junior COM. I would like to take this time to thank them for their past commitment to our Junior Football competition. John Myers and Shane Elliott as past presidents and Robert Mann and Ian Purdon as long time Development/Interleague committee members.
In fact because of Ian Purdon’s commitment, hard work and dedication over a long period of time, he was awarded Life Membership of the AFL Yarra Ranges this year.
Their experience would be very hard to cover but when things get tough good people stand up. Your Junior COM members consisting of Kelly Stokes, Ray Fellows, Darren Pryor, Nan Cleven and our two new members Shayne Collette and Leigh Dunn did an amazing job. Nothing was ever too much to ask of them and with the way the season progressed with many trials and tribulations they stood strong and got us through. Thank you.
Being a member of the new AFL Yarra Ranges Commission was certainly an eye opener. The amount of time and effort our Commission members put into progressing football in our region was outstanding. On behalf of the Junior COM, I would like to thank all Commission members for their insight and help this year and believe going forward we will benefit greatly from this model of administration. Taking on the role this season has given me more of a chance to work closer with the office administration staff and find out more about the administration of both the Junior and Senior Football and Netball competitions.
The day to day running of the league is busy enough, but not a day goes by when someone hasn’t got a gripe or complaint. Luke McCormick, Cameron Hutchison and Gayle Seeger handled themselves with the upmost professionalism and did an amazing job. I would like to thank them for all their help and knowledge in running the junior league this season. Thank you.
On a personal note I would like to wish Luke all the best for his future endeavours.
Yet again our Development/Interleague program was a great success; this was due to the hard work put in by Darren Pryor and the Development/Interleague committee. For a small league we definitely have a great deal of very talented players.
Our junior girls after their inaugural season last year, joined their own league this season in conjunction with the EFL. Well done to Emily, Dean and Aaron for their insight and commitment in creating a competition where girls can play footy in our region. The Girls competition has introduced a new dynamic atmosphere at our junior clubs, so if you don’t already field a girl’s side, I would highly recommend you do. It brings the whole family unit together to play the game that we all love.
I felt that we really tightened up on malicious and rough tackles this season and that was due to our great relationship with our Umpire directors Patrick Van Dyk, Brendan McKenna, Warwick Marsh and Andrew Egginton. Though Patrick was extremely busy outside this role, Brendan, Warwick and Andrew did a fantastic job and were always willing to focus on any issues that the Junior COM discussed with them. Thank you.
This season, as I mentioned at the start, was a rollercoaster. We started with a fixture that no one wanted, so we went back and re-fixtured the whole season. We knew we had to introduce new By-laws, some of which the clubs didn’t understand, but the grading concept was new to all of us. I knew some of the new by-laws gave some clubs great angst, but our whole aim was to give as many players as we could the chance to play competitive footy. It may not have been the easiest season, but in the end we had every club represented in our final series and for many of the clubs it was their first ever premiership for that age group. There were some great competitive games of football during the season, and from what I saw, all children enjoying this great game of ours.
Our finances are stable, but could be a lot better. We need all Junior Clubs to embrace our new Commission Administration Model and purchase as much stock through the AFL Yarra Ranges. Luke and the new RGM will and have worked hard to negotiate the best deals possible for our clubs. The power of a collective group should and will get us a better deal, but we need everyone on board. Early next season a catalogue of products that can be purchased from the AFL Yarra Ranges will be distributed, so there should be no excuses as to why you wouldn’t use them.
As I mentioned at our Presentation night, I would like to Thank all our Club committees for the effort you all put in to give our Local children a friendly and safe place to play footy. We have something special at the
AFL Yarra Ranges and that is the friendly community feel at all our clubs.
Looking forward to next year we will be going back to what we all know, core age groups with our newly named Wayalaks age group & U/11’s and U/13’s.
As a past club President I know we all make decisions on how they may affect our club, but as a member of
the Junior COM we make decisions on the basis of how they may affect all the club’s. In saying this Thank you all for your support this season & look forward to your ongoing support next year.
Thanks

2016 saw the financial position of the league improve markedly from 2015. Luke McCormick, in his role as General Manager should be congratulated on his work in stabilising the leagues cash flow position and the merger to AFL Yarra Ranges. This will provide the league a strong platform to grow and improve its business model in 2017. As a league, it is vital that we continue to grow our income through increased sponsorship, sales and prudent financial management.
AFL Yarra Ranges thanks our sponsors in 2016. Our major Sponsor, Bendigo Community bank, along with Tara Press (Division 2) and Sherwood (Juniors) continue to be outstanding partners. The league also welcomed several new sponsors in 2016. Yarra Valley Racing, Yarra Valley Rodeo and Greenstone Wines joined the league as sponsors. Utilising local businesses, from our communities, will continue to be a focus for AFL Yarra Ranges as we look to grow our sponsorship revenue significantly in 2017 and beyond.
Redundancies and depreciation of capital works on the league offices saw us make a small loss in 2016. The raffle was not as successful as 2015. This was due to tickets and prizes not being finalised and released in an adequate time frame. Tickets to the 2017 raffle will be released at the end of April, which will enable this to once again become a viable revenue stream for clubs and the league. Club Debtors continues to be a major area of concern for the league, with over $32,000
outstanding at the end of the financial year. 2017 will see the enforcement of clubs losing premiership points if financial obligations are not met.
Revenue from supplier sales again has decreased. This is an area of focus for 2017 and beyond. As a league, we will implement improved systems for clubs designed to make our supplier relationships simpler, easier and beneficial to our clubs. With all clubs now under one banner, we have a unique opportunity to re-establish a strong relationship between suppliers, league and clubs. It is vital clubs support and embrace these changes and ensure that the league remains in a strong, viable financial position. Support in this area is vital if the league is to keep costs down for clubs. 2016 marked the first year that all clubs, senior and junior, were able to receive the league rebate offer, which provided rebates of over 10% to participating clubs.
Finals in 2016 saw a small increase in revenue. The finals revenue for the league continues to be consistent. However, there is a clear opportunity to review our processes and grow our finals revenue at senior and junior level. Equalisation of revenue from finals to clubs will also be a part of our ongoing review.
I look forward to working with you all in maintaining the stability of our clubs and competitions.
Aaron Bailey, Region General Manager – AFL Yarra Ranges

Welcome to all participating clubs and good luck with your finals aspirations for all your teams this year.
I feel we had a successful 2016 interleague season with the “Rick Irwin” Day for the under 15s & 16s being well attended by players from all clubs. Thanks to Rick Irwin and the guest facilitators that come along to educate the players to hopefully improve them as footballers, but more importantly, as solid citizens.
The under 13s & 14s camp was held at ADANAC in Yarra Junction for the second year and, once again, was a resounding success. Thanks to Mark Sargeant for running the Saturday morning program. His input and experience was enlightening for the group of players. We organised activities for Saturday afternoon, including flying fox and water trampoline. The afternoon was freezing cold, but we had no shortage of willing participants for the water activities. On Sunday we had Luke McCormick come along and talk to the boys. Thanks to Luke and to all the coaches and parents who helped at the camp and stayed the night. Also thanks to Bernadette and the staff from ADANAC for making the weekend very enjoyable.
The Queen’s Birthday carnival for the under 13s, 14s, 15s, & 16s, was very successfully run, by Cam Roberts, with all the spectators watching some high quality junior representative football over the 3 days. All our age groups being very competitive in most games with the under 14s missing out on the title by 1 point. Some of the teams had a new experience playing on a synthetic surface at Carlisle Park, Cranbourne, which was interesting to say the least. Next year we hope to have one of the days in the Yarra Valley which would save a lot of travel for us all.
The committee had a minor setback during the year with Frankston deciding not to continue with the Queen’s Birthday Carnival for the under 11s & 12s. Once we got over the disappointment, we threw some ideas around and came up with what turned out to be outstandingly successful night. Gordon Gosland and Adam Humphrey put the whole concept together and were assisted by Brett Chamberlain, Mark Holly, Mark Gerencser, Ian Crosher, Lincoln Dempsey, Grant Smith & Brad Jones. These fine assistants coached on game day allowing Gordon & Adam to co-ordinate the entire game. Huge thanks to Ian Purdon & Steve Ebbels, who somehow managed to control about 90 under 11 & 12 boys and parents giving valued information at all times.
Thank you to all the coaches who gave of their time and expertise to assist the interleague teams and players in gaining more knowledge. We are very fortunate to have these fine people, Gordon Gosland (under 11), Adam Humphrey (under 12), Stuart Byron (under 13), Brad Hall (under 14), Vincent Muccitelli (under 15) and Angelo Lamanna (under 16) to coach our interleague teams.
Along with the coaches, we had some outstanding assistant coaches John Syswerda (under 13), Rob Humphrey (under 14), Dave Robinson (under 15) & Marcus Hotees (under 16).
I would also like to thank all the team managers and parents that help as trainers, runners and water carriers. As we all know, without parents volunteering on game day, things just wouldn’t happen.
Thanks to the following clubs for allowing the squads to use their facilities for interleague training: Seville, Upwey Tecoma, Mt. Evelyn & Yarra Junction. Thanks to Woori Yallock for making their ground available for the under 11 & 12 night. Without the assistance of all clubs, the development and interleague program would not be as successful as it is. So with that, thanks to all the clubs of the AFL Yarra Ranges Junior Football.
Thanks to the Development & Interleague Committee for all their assistance in making the carnivals successful and hopefully we can continue the success into the future. Thanks to the Junior COM, especially Andy Gibbons, for their support of the whole development and interleague program. We had a few changes this season with a few long standing people stepping aside from the committee. I personally would like to thank John Myers, Shane Elliott and Robert Mann for their years of devotion to the DRJFL and especially the development and interleague committee.
Last but not least, the office staff at League HQ have assisted in the success of the interleague program. At no time was any request, question, problem unable to be sorted, so thanks Luke, Cam, Dean & Gayle.
Daren Pryor Chairman

AFL Yarra Ranges v Mornington Peninsula Nepean FNL
The Yarra Ranges hosted Mornington Peninsula at Healesville Football Ground on Saturday. The sun was shining the breeze was blowing and everybody was geared up to witness some high standards in Football & Netball. The Yarra Ranges were coming off a disappointing performance in 2015 and were looking at making amends. Coming up against an unknown quantity in Mornington Peninsula Nepean was always going to make it an interesting contest. Coaches Danny Ryan & Simon Blackney had their boys prepared whilst Sarah Hogan & Rachael Hickey were looking at showing just how strong the Yarra Ranges Netball competition is and they did not disappoint.
SENIORS – Yarra Ranges 13.8.86 def Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL (2) 12.4.76
Yarra Ranges started the day off with a blast kicking with a slight breeze to the dog track end of the ground. Rodney Woodford (Healesville) kicked 3 in the 1st and it looked like it might be all one way traffic. Mornington fought back late in the qtr kicking 3 themselves and it was all square at qtr time. The challenge was on! Jordy Williams (Woori Yallock) & Justin Myers (Wandin) were the driving force through the centre while Damon Kift (Mt Evelyn) was working hard across the backline. It was goal for goal in the second and Yarra went into the major break with a 1 point lead. The words from the Coach at half time were to play smart. Play our tempo footy, know when to slow the ball down and hold onto it. Look for our opportunities. That is just what they did in the 3rd taking advantage of the breeze and held Mornington goalless while kicking 3. Ben Monkhorst (Woori Yallock), Robbie Hartfield (Mt Evelyn) & Marcus Hottes (Olinda) started to make their presence felt. Mornington made a run in the last kicking 5 goals to 3 but just could not get around the defence of Bart Wallace (Alexandra) & James Marasco (Yea). Matt Polkinghorne (Wandin) played a Captains role and lead by example all day. Yarra Ranges Best: Justin Myers (Wandin) AFL VIC Best on Ground Medallist, Jordan Williams (Woori Yallock) Damon Kift (Mt Evelyn), Marcus Hottes (Olinda Ferny Creek), Nicholas Mende (Healesville), Matthew Polkinghorne (Wandin). Mornington Peninsula Best: Ryan Marks-Logan (Frankston Bombers) AFL VIC Best on Ground Medallist, Ethan Rahilly (Tyabb), Adrian Speedy (Somerville) Jonah Siverson (Red Hill), Rowan Hogenbirk (Somerville) Blake Harkness (Langwarrin).
UNDER 19 – Mornington Peninsula Nepean FL (2) 16.20.116 def Yarra Ranges 7.11.53
Mornington Peninsula Nepean dominated this game from the first bounce kicking 5.7 to nil in the first. Yarra Ranges fought hard all day but it was never going to be easy to claw back the lead that Mornington had. Mornington played a well drilled possession game of football and Yarra were always
chasing. Nelson Aldridge (Healesville) was a strong option up forward but the boys just could not break through the defences of Mornington to get the ball to him. Riley Aldous (Yea), Austin Smith (Yarra Glen) & Travis Gromer (Monbulk) ran all day. The lead at halftime was 30 points. Yarra came out and regrouped in the second half and kicked 5 goals but Mornington maintained the pressure and kicked 10 goals themselves. Mornington Peninsula Best: Tanner Bishop (Rosebud) AFL VIC Best on Ground Medallist, Tom Stoffles (Rosebud), Sean Downie (Rosebud), Chad Harris (Sorrento), Tom Roberts (Somerville), Hamish McShane (Red Hill). Yarra Ranges Best: Drew Benson (Woori Yallock) AFL VIC Best on Ground Medallist, Nelson Aldridge (Healesville), Riley Aldous (Yea), Travis Gromer (Monbulk), Matthew Brierley (Mt Evelyn), Austin Smith (Yarra Glen).
OPEN – Yarra Ranges 63 def Mornington Peninsula 36 Yarra Ranges went into this year’s interleague defending their reputation as one of the Premier Netball competitions in the state. They certainly did no damage to it beating Mornington Peninsula by 30 goals. The game started at a frenetic pace with Yarra Ranges shooting 14 goals to 11. Ash Howard (Olinda) started off with a 9 goal first qtr. Krista Tomlinson was, as always, a force to be reckoned with in the Centre while the trio of Kaitlyn Black (Mt Evelyn), Ty Coppinger (Wandin) & Tamara Luke (Olinda) were a real mountain to try and shoot over. Another 17 goals in the 2nd to 8 saw a lead of 12 goals at half time. The final straw was the 18 goal 3 rd qtr that really put the result to rest. Yarra Ranges Best: Krista Tomlinson (Olinda Ferny Creek) AFL VIC Best on Court Medallist, Ash Howard (Olinda Ferny Creek – 30 goals), Kaitlyn Black (Mt Evelyn). Mornington Peninsula Best: Sarah Duncan (Rye) AFL VIC Best on Court Medallist, Alana McDonald (Devon Meadows), Dionne Douglas (Crib Point).
UNDER 17 – Yarra Ranges 49 def Mornington Peninsula 24
The girls came out full of running. They got the jump from the outset with Emerson Woods (Warburton Millgrove) & Holly McInerney (Wandin) setting the scene under the ring. Ciara Lumsden (Wandin) was a goer all day. A 7 goal lead at the first break set up the match. Holly McInerney was amazing under the ring shooting 9 & 10 goals in the 2nd & 3rd qtrs, while the defence stood tall led by Emelie Ainslie-Aitkens (Wandin), Alanna Lennie (Wandin) & Stephanie Durant (Warburton Millgrove). The final qtr was the biggest scoring qtr with Yarra shooting 16 to Mornington 5. A well-deserved win to the girls. Yarra Ranges Best: Ciara Lumsden (Wandin) AFL VIC Best on Court Medallist, Holly McInerney (Wandin – 34 goals), Charlotte Sparkes (Wandin). Mornington Peninsula Best: Isabella Shannon (Red Hill) AFL VIC Best on Court Medallist, Eliza McGuigan (Rye), Shannon Young (Rosebud).

All in all, a season 2016 was slightly disappointing, especially in regards to the amount of reports for abusive language directed towards our umpires. Yellow Cards were down by 5, Reports increased by 6, Weeks suspended were up by 42. The increase in weeks handed down can be attributed partially to some larger penalties for a few more nasty incidents this year. Approximately one report per 8 games and 1 yellow card on average every 2 games. Some clubs who find themselves continually on the wrong end in these discipline areas should be looking at ways to improve. However, player behaviour is always a focus and the League will continually look for improvements in both the amount of players yellow carded and reported.
A summary of reports in 2016 include:
• 16 for “Striking”
• 1 for “Attempted Striking”
• 1 for “Kicking”
• 3 for “Engaging in rough conduct”
• 2 for “Front on contact”
• 11 for “Using abusive, insulting or threatening language towards an Umpire”
• 4 for “Using abusive Language”
• 1 for “Tripping another person”
• 7 for “Any act of misconduct”
• 2 for “Head butting”
• 1 for “Shaking the Goal Post”
With 400 games played, we averaged one report for every 8 games played.

The AFL Yarra Ranges would like to thank & acknowledge the efforts of Mr Greg Black, Mr Gary Tippett, Mr Matthew Tippett and Mr.Craig West in their roles as Chairmen of the tribunal and also thank the efforts of tribunal members, Mr. Fury Di Pietro, Mr. Harold Bromley and Mr. Mick Huistiveld. Unfortunately for us Gary & Matthew will be moving onto other positions in 2017. We thank them for all their efforts with us over many years and wish them all the best in their future roles.
The YRU group can be extremely proud and satisfied with their performances this season and have certainly played their part in the success of the AFL Yarra Ranges in 2016.
One of the challenges we were given at the beginning of the season was to provide boundary umpires in the Reserve grade competition with a view to improving the professionalism of the League. It was pleasing that we were able to supply umpires to those Clubs that requested them, except on 2-3 occasions late in the season when our numbers dropped off due to injuries and unavailability. The recruitment of these new umpires was driven in most cases by existing umpires bringing friends to training and our Sunday junior umpires joining the senior group as boundary umpires. We would expect this to become compulsory for all Clubs in 2017 and this will require us to recruit another 10-12 umpires to ensure all games are covered.
The Junior Board led by Patrick Van Dyk and Brendan McKenna did an outstanding job after an indifferent start to the season, and continue to guide and mentor our junior umpires in a positive and constructive manner. We are extremely conscious of the importance of our junior umpires to the continued overall strength of the group in the coming seasons, and it remains a major focus that the Junior Board are developing and teaching these young boys and girls excellent life and umpiring skills.
The female involvement in umpiring is an area that we need to certainly continue to have as a major focus, especially with the huge growth in female footy and the introduction of the AFL Women’s League in 2017. It is pleasing to report that in 2016 we had 10 female members, which is a record number of members.
During the season we conducted interchange rounds with the Ballarat Football League umpires and the Riddell Football League umpires, and these were again very successful with umpires gaining the experience of
umpiring a different brand of football and we were able to display the talent of our umpires to our fellow umpires and football fraternity.
Congratulations to the following umpires who received these special awards at our Presentation night held at the Yarra Glen Racecourse function centre.
• John Edwards Medal - Lucas Taylor
• Golden Whistle - Jarrah Fitcher
• Field umpire of the year - Warwick Marsh
• Boundary umpire of the year
- Corey Malcolm
• Goal umpire of the year - Nelson Tucker
• Luke Hollier Memorial Incentive award
- Lachie Siddall
• Best Club person - Bryan Sultana
• Life Membership
- Les King & Alistair Raskas
Congratulations to all umpires who received Grand Final appointments and a special mention to the six umpires who debuted in the Division 1 Senior Grand Final.
It was fantastic to see John Edwards, Leigh Walters and Harry Marsh receive Life Membership of the League, and these gentlemen fully deserve this great honour for the contribution they have made to the Umpiring group and football in the Valley.
Thanks to John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Alan Ashmore, Bob Allen and Tony Cross for their support and commitment as Board members this season.
Thanks to the YRUA led by Bryan Sultana for providing a strong and caring Association for all members, and to Luke McCormick and staff at the office for your support.
