President’s Report

F irstly, I would like to welcome both the Alexandra & Thornton Eildon Football Netball Clubs to our League this season, and thank them for their support and the manner they conducted themselves in Season 2006. The League continues to grow and, in my opinion, is going from strength to strength, as we are committed to the development of both the football and netball within our region. The continued expansion of our league, particularly in the area of netball, will allow us to develop and grow our balance sheet. It is extremely important for the league to remain financially strong, which gives us the opportunity to support existing clubs and ultimately makes the league attractive to clubs outside our league. Again, we will be handing back to our clubs a dividend, so if your club supports the league and our valued sponsors, then your club will continue to gain financial rewards. Overall, this year has been a very positive one for the Yarra Valley & Mountain District Football League Inc and I am proud with our efforts both on and off the field.

I wish to express my personal thanks to each of our Board Members, Deputy President Shane Smith, Directors Leo Groenewegen, Chris Prytula, Bill Heppell, Graeme Tuplin, Barry Stuart and Bob Moore. These people are involved with our league for the right reasons. I thank each of these gentlemen for their support and friendship they have given me over past season and seasons prior. I appreciate their efforts, input and ideas you have all given the league and me. I would like to particularly thank those departing, in Barry & Bob, for their efforts as directors, and I hope to catch up with them at the footy next year.

The league has expanded its staffing levels over season 2006, with the inclusion of a trainee, Rebecca Wyhoon, who supported both Lori and Ben. Rebecca has shown us her maturity with her work ethic and development of the netball. Lori Woodcock continued to improve our web site, football record and administration area and we are saddened to see her go after nearly four years with us. I wish to personally thank Lori for her support for the board and the energy she gave us all over this period of time.

Interleague this season was a little disappointing at the senior level, however I know the commitment of our players will have us achieve a higher position in seasons to come. The efforts and commitment required to operate the interleague, were nothing short of first class. Thank you for the hard work and efforts of Board Members Shane Smith, Leo Groenewegen, and our

Senior Coach Mark “Beaker” Sandilands, chairman of selectors Jim Martin and runner Adrian Keitley were very much appreciated.

Our Under 18s had a fantastic carnival, where they won all three games. Thanks to the efforts of the coaches Geoff Shipp and his assistant Felix Fraraccio. I would like to also thank the clubs and players in both groups for their support with the interleague concept. Thanks to our trainers for their valued efforts: Frances, Karen, Naomi and Bobby. I am also good to see the redevelopment of the trainers association and this is through the efforts of the interleague trainers and other trainers throughout the league, well done guys thus far for your efforts and support.

In Season 2007, our joint venture with Eastern Ranges Under 18 TAC club was nearly completed, with renovated change rooms, new lighting and gymnasium. As I have mentioned over the past three seasons, the re-development of Kilsyth ground will offer us options to re-develop other grounds throughout our league. The playing surface is now at level one and is the best in the Outer Eastern Suburbs. Over the next five or so years, many of our clubs will have their grounds redeveloped and Kilsyth will cater for each of these clubs. We are working hard to ensure our poorer grounds are surfaced first by the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

We have also made some huge steps to getting both the Senior and Junior competition working together with the support and commitment of the VCFL, with Ben O’Brien, DRJFL President Doug Evans and VCFL Area Manager Shaun Connell working towards a joint administration for the not-so-distant future.

I would like to thank our Umpires, their President Leigh Walters, Director of Umpiring Ivan Walters and Will Eastmure (secretary of appointments board) for the professional manner they all conducted themselves this season under difficult circumstances. Thank you to all the Umpires for their efforts this season and I hope to see you all back next season. Special thanks is also extended to the club umpires who supported the league this season, well done to these people for helping us out of a jam.

Our presentation night was a great success, with in excess of 350 people in attendance, representing both football and netball. The work and professionalism into the presentation was again nothing short of first class. A special thank you is extended to our host Sandy Roberts and well done to the large(st) group of worthy award winners the League has ever had. We all appreciated the efforts of Matt Ewart, Tony Foo, Lori Woodcock, Bob Foletta & Rebecca Wyhoon for the preparation of this night and how well the night was perceived.

President’s Report

To our tribunal members, once again thank you for your efforts during 2006 and we hope that it has been an enjoyable season for you all. The system appears to be working well, with our players performing on the field the best in many years.

My personal thanks is extended again to Ben O’Brien, our Chief Executive Officer, for his work during this season which has been much greater than in the past. Ben has had to accept more duties this season due to board members being committed elsewhere. He is committed to the development of our Football and Netball competition. Many people just do not understand the work involved in running and controlling a competition of our size. Thank again Ben for your support you

support you continue to give clubs within our league. I know, at times, we have differed in opinions; however I hope we continue to achieve worthy results for both the clubs and league alike. I hope our future continues to prosper and you all respect my personal challenges over the past 12 months.

This is our third season with local radio station 3MDR of Emerald. I would like to personally thank Bob Foletta in his first season as our host for his excellent efforts of the continued development of our weekly broadcast and gaining valued sponsorship monies. Another thanks to Matt Ewart and Tony Foo, who both continued to brighten up the Saturday broadcasts. Leo Groenewegen’s special comments add something we all wish to hear about a game of football. They tell me that, on many occasions, we had two special comments people; obviously the second bloke didn’t have much to do on Saturdays, eh “Limpy”??!! I am sure that everyone would agree that, each season, the broadcast is gaining more listeners, the professionalism of 3MDR and their support has continued to lift our broadcasts to higher standards.

In season 2007, we are looking to extend the Netball further, with the support of Netball Victoria. Next season, I would like to see each club have three senior sides, and the development of one junior side. I know this is a challenge for some clubs, however to continue to provide sport to our youth, we must be committed to this concept. Those clubs who haven’t had netball or just one side this season have a lot of work to do and we are prepared to assist as much as possible, as is Netball Victoria. Let’s start the work now, not when the season is upon us. Netball coaches are as important as football coaches, appointing them sooner, rather than later, and you will gain the results.

Finally, to all the women involved with our football and netball, thank you for your support and continued development of our league, you are all valued by each and every person within our clubs. To my wife Kath and my loving three daughters, Jaimi, Carli and Brooke, thank you for letting me be involved in the (now) two sports I enjoy watching.

For the season ahead, there have been some great coaching recruits and all is looking good for a very successful 2007 and for many years beyond. Let’s continue to strive to achieve our aim of “becoming the leading Country Football and Netball League” - we aren’t far off and we are getting closer each year.

CEO’s Report

2006 promised to be one of the more challenging for the League’s administration and by season’s end it had certainly lived up to those expectations.

For the first time since 2001, the League welcomed new clubs into the competition, in Alexandra & ThorntonEildon. Both clubs slotted into second division, and one came within two kicks of playing in first division in 2007. By the time finals came around, both clubs competed in football and netball grand finals, adding much-needed depth to our second division and being among the best-performed of the former CGFL clubs in 2006. Their transition to the YVMDFL has been a learning experience for all parties, and we look forward to its continuation next year.

The explosion in the popularity of our netball competition took many by surprise, and it is now a key plank in the YVMDFL’s future development. After taking it quietly last year, with seven teams and limiting the competition to first division, 2006 saw 29 teams across both divisions taking to the court, with all bar one club represented each weekend with at least one team. It is ironic that the club with one of the best netball facilities in the competition (Seville) did not have a team, but that situation will be rectified in 2007. It is very difficult to have a netball comp without teams, and the YVMDFL clubs deserve congratulations for getting behind netball and promoting it to their members and supporters, with some clubs that did not field a team last year getting two up and running in 2006. All in all, the season did run fairly smoothly, and once again I would like to thank the netball co-ordinators at each club for applying common sense in resolving the majority of issues that arose on Saturdays. It is doubtful that the comp will increase 400% in 2007, but a main focus in the off-season will be umpire development. An “introduction to umpiring” course was run pre-season by Netball Victoria, and was well attended by club umpires, and the overall standard of umpiring has improved from last year. We will be looking to increase the number of courses available to our club umpires to keep improving the quality of umpiring, as we seem to have plenty of players, but, just like football umpires, qualified netball umpires are always in short supply.

2006 saw the introduction of club field umpires into our Reserves grade football for the first time. For some years, the YVMDFL had bucked a state-wide trend of decreasing umpire numbers, but the chickens eventually came home to roost in 2006, with almost 20 field umpires departing. Once again, full marks to our clubs, who fully understood the predicament (thanks largely to the preseason efforts of Will Eastmure, secretary of the Umpires’ Appointments’ Board) and were able to find volunteers to umpire each week, and to convince their Reserves

players (99% of the time) to cut the new umpires some slack! Of course, thanks must also go to the club umpires themselves, without whom Reserves football would have struggled this year – as it was, we received fewer complaints about Reserves umpiring than we did seniors! It has not yet been decided if we will require the services of these club umpires next year, but if we don’t, it would be great to see some 2006 umpires continuing to do so next year, as “official” YVMDFL umpires. The League took over the administration of umpires this year, following a similar move by the VCFL, and the evolution of a new structure to umpiring in the League will continue next year – reversing the slide in umpire numbers will be the top priority of the new umpiring department. In 2006, the efforts of both the appointments’ board in general, and Ivan Walters and Will Eastmure in particular, and the YRUA executive, headed up by Leigh Walters, in spreading our reduced numbers around more grounds this year than they have had to for some time are certainly worthy of praise. On a related issue, the League would like to thank both Ivan & Leigh for their off-field efforts this year (and in past years), as both are resigning from the adviser’s position and presidency of the YRUA respectively.

The League’s hosting of its division of the WorkSafe country championships will certainly go down as a highlight of the year, as will the performance of the U18 squad in winning the competition. An interleague “culture” is slowly being built in the League, and the senior squad will start to see the benefits of it in coming years, as will netball, which was a disappointing omission from the 2006 carnival. The other major League event for the year saw a record crowd attend Ramage Medal night in early September, thanks largely to an influx of life members and netballers. The League’s retail operations increased again this year, and our thanks go to clubs in both the senior and junior leagues for their support. At the time of writing, the joint administration of both senior and junior leagues is close to becoming a reality, thanks primarily to the efforts of the VCFL and our Area Manager, Shaun Connell, after being a pipedream for the best part of seven years, The final details are to be worked out (hopefully) in November. The streamlining of operations across both leagues will have a positive impact on sport in our region, and it is hoped that more senior and junior clubs will see the benefits in looking forward and aligning themselves more closely.

From a financial perspective, while turnover was up, profits were down, primarily through increased costs in office equipment, higher stock levels and an increase in the costs of running finals in the Shire of Yarra Ranges, combined with a decrease in first division finals’ gate receipts. In 2005, we had seven different clubs competing on grand final day – this year, we had three. The fact that the grand final gate was only down 10% is actually a credit not only to the supporters of the competing clubs, but to the supporters of all YVMDFL clubs who turned up, but it does make you wonder what might have been, if more clubs had been competing. It is also interesting to note that League costs to clubs have remained pretty much the same since 1999, while League operating costs have increased considerably in the intervening seven years, with the League absorbing those costs – I

can’t think of too many businesses that are charging the same prices now as they were in 1999, and this is something that will be looked at by the League in the off-season. The League has stated that keeping club costs to a minimum is a priority, and it will continue to be so, but a seven year freeze is possibly taking things too far.

That being said, the League is extremely fortunate to be well-supported by its sponsors in the Compass Group, Commodore Press, AMCOR, Cadbury-Schweppes and Sticks Yarra Valley, and its advertisers in the League’s weekly record, which received the VCFL award for the best record in country football/netball, after receiving the same accolade in 2004. We thank them all for their continued support, as we continue to strive to provide value for money.

Looking at last year’s report, I said that 2005 was the busiest of the past three (from an administrative perspective), which unfortunately paled into insignificance when compared to 2006. Despite being down on numbers, the Board, led by Tony Mitchell, continued to make themselves available with suggestions and advice on a regular basis, and I thank them for their support. The appointment of Rebecca Wyhoon as a trainee in March, with her background in netball, was a positive step for us, and Rebecca’s more-than-competent performance this year indicates that she will be of great benefit to us in the years to come. After four seasons, Lori Woodcock departed the League post-finals to pursue interests outside football,

CEO’s Report

and I would like to thank her for her contributions to the League over that time. There will be further changes/ additions to personnel in the off-season, based largely on the possibility of the YVMDFL/DRJFL alliance alluded to earlier.

The media team continued to grow and prosper, and the introduction of live internet streaming of our broadcasts (courtesy of Darren & the team at 3MDR) has brought the boys a national and international audience – apparently Howard Stern is already looking over his shoulder.

Greg Black, Alex Lagerwey and their colleagues continued to administer the tribunal with their usual aplomb, and were “rewarded” by having to sit the least of any YVMDFL tribunal on record – a look at the tribunal stats later in this report shows why.

What will 2007 bring? The abolition of the League’s salary cap, for a start; ongoing discussions with the VCFL and Football Victoria over country/metro boundaries in the outer eastern region; more netball; interleague in Geelong and the possible re-entry of two clubs into the competition. Apart from that, it should be pretty quiet!

YARRA VALLEY MOUNTAIN DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Independent Tribunal Report

The trend in the reduction of reports in the YVMDFL continued in 2006, with the number of reports dropping a further 17% this year to 19, the lowest on record. Conversely, the number of weeks’ suspension handed out by the Tribunal was the highest since 2001, a figure that was skewed somewhat because of two suspensions of at least 12 months.

It is pleasing to see that the words of Bob Moore last year have been heeded, with clubs and players continuing to strive to reduce the number of reportable incidents, while the increased professionalism of players in the competition was matched by the umpires. The advent of the VCFL’s “set penalty” system has been accepted by all relevant parties, and has, no doubt, contributed to the drastically reduced number of reports actually heard by the Tribunal, with hearings usually reserved for

the more serious charges, particularly those involving umpire abuse. There is a possibility that the system will be refined further for 2007, and clubs will be fully advised of any changes.

Messrs Greg Black and Alex Lagerwey continued in their roles as joint chairmen of the Tribunal, and the League would like to acknowledge their efforts, along with those of the Tribunal members in Fury di Pietro, Greg Tippett, Ken McMaster, Don Carey and Harold Bromley, Reporting Officer Keith Thompson, and Investigations Officer Paul Aarons, as well as the various club advocates – the services of these people were, fortunately, not called upon that often in 2006.

On a sad note, the League has noted the passing of League life member and Tribunal chairman Bill Dunstan since last year’s report, whose contribution to one of the more thankless tasks in a football league will be sorely missed.

YVMDFL Accounts

ROD HAYES Business Manager, YVMDFL

Trading Statement

The League’s profit for the 2004-05 financial year was $28,750, which was almost identical to the previous year’s results. This is a satisfactory result in a year when substantial cost increases were incurred compared to the previous year. Another strong financial result is testament to the focus and drive of the board in carrying out the League’s business on behalf of its member clubs. Total revenue was $522,644, compared to the previous year of $390,202. The 34% increase in revenue arose mainly from sale of goods up 62%, finals up 28% and interleague receipts up 114%. Finals’ gate reimbursements to players were included as both income and expenditure items for the first time in 2005. This resulted in approximately $10,000 being received from players (and then returned to clubs) which contributed 50% of the increased income, and 71% of the increased cost, of finals in 2005.

The sponsorship from Commodore Press that offsets the cost of

the League Record was also included as both an income and expenditure item in 2005, unlike in 2004.

Expenses on the Colchester Road Reserve totalled $7,923, which was the League’s 50% of the cost of total works – the other 50% was paid by Eastern Ranges FC. These consisted of the preparation of a master plan for the reserve and associated survey works, and these were “once-off” expenses. Sincere thanks must go to Shire of Yarra Ranges Mayor, David Hodgett, for his contribution of $2,500 towards the project. With on-field works almost complete, and Football Victoria looking to fund further development of the venue, the League will be aiming to keep future League expenditure on the venue to a reasonable (and affordable) level.

General expenses and specific costs totalled $493,894 compared to $361,421 in the previous year. The increase in the cost of sales was the major contributor to the overall expenditure increase. However, the gross margin on sales improved from 21.9% to 24.1%. A pleasing result considering the large increased in sales.

Interleague costs were $43,658 compared to $15,790 in 2004. This increase was mainly associated with the additional cost of air travel compared to coach travel in the previous year. Also, for the first time, the League’s representative netball team took part in the interleague event. While the VCFL made additional

As of October 31, 2006

Balance She

The financial position of the League, as demonstrated in the balance sheet, remains strong. Dividends to clubs now total $135,471, with the board declaring a $20,000 dividend for the 2005 year. Distributed dividends represent a large financial bonus to the clubs and these have been achieved while maintaining a solid financial

base for the League from which other club benefits can be pursued eg Kilsyth reserve.

The strength of the League has been helpful in providing temporary financial support to those clubs that find themselves with funding difficulties.

In August 2005, representatives of the Emerald Football Club met with members of the League board to discuss the financial position of the club. As a result of these meetings, $8,271.58 of the club’s trading account debt was transferred from the League’s Accounts Receivable to Sundry Debtor – Clubs. Unfortunately, the club has not been able to meet the commitment given to the League. Further discussions are currently taking place to resolve the problem. Under the original agreement, if the Emerald FC defaulted on its commitments, the club would not participate in the League’s 2005 dividend. The dividend distribution schedule is set out in the accompanying financial report.

The Seville football Club once again found itself in a difficult financial position and payments under the original agreement with the League have been temporarily suspended. The club did manage to reduce its loan account by $1,950 during the 2005 financial year.

General Comments

As in previous years, at the time of including the League’s financial reports in the Annual Report the League’s auditor has not completed the audit. Therefore, all financial presentations in the report are subject to audit ratification

The financial results as presented in the 2003-2004 Annual Report have been adjusted to meet audit requirements. Depreciation has been reduced from $2,850 to $803

with a resultant increase in the 2003-04 profit of $1,847. The audited 2003-04 profit is $28,781, compared to the unaudited profit of $26,934.

The League directors continue to work passionately and diligently to deliver maximum benefits to member clubs and to make the YVMDFL the premium country football competition. While the business of football is the League’s primary reason for being, we should be continually trying to improve the quality of the nonfootball business so that we can achieve a sustainable and growing financial future.

LEO GROENEWEGEN

This year saw the YVMDFL host the VCFL Country Championships for the first time. Teams from Sunraysia, Western Border, and North Central /Murray came to the YVMDFL to compete in Pool D of the Championships.

As per usual, selection of a team is an arduous task with up to 70 players from our respective teams being invited to play. With attrition rates being exceptionally high this year, the YVMDFL sent out a reasonably young and inexperienced group, mixed with a few die-hard experienced seniors. Coach Mark Sandilands (ex UpweyTecoma) did a great job in moulding a committed group. Even though we only won one game, the experience gained by the group, especially the youngsters most notably Peter Monk (Healesville) and Marcus Hottes (Woori Yallock) will make us stronger for the future. Thanks go to our sponsors: Compass, Worksafe, and Victor Sports. Also, to our trainers, Karen Webb (Silvan), Naomi Booker (Silvan), Sriyan “Bob” Peries (Seville), and Frances van der Weele (Mt. Evelyn), runner Adrian

Keitley (ex-Powelltown), and assistant coach Jim Martin (Mt. Evelyn), and the clubs that allowed us use of their grounds for training and playing, namely Woori Yallock, Warburton-Millgrove, and North Croydon..

Congratulations go to Craig Clarke (GembrookCockatoo) who was voted best player of the carnival for the YVMDFL, represented the VCFL in Brisbane and made All-Australian for the second year.

The only disappointment was that netball was not represented this year. This was very unsatisfactory to the YVMDFL, and has been raised with the VCFL. Hopefully, this situation will not occur again, as our netball girls also deserve to represent our league, as they did in 2005. Next year’s interleague reverts to a “one match” format in Geelong, with the “pool” concept returning in 2008.

Finally, congratulations to Lori, Rebecca & Ben in the office on the magnificent job of organizing such a huge and successful event.

Under 18s Interleague Coach

In the last three seasons, the Under 18 round robin series has been very successful for the YVMDFL, with two seconds and a victory in 2006. This has highlighted the enormous talent that is and has come through from the clubs’ under 18 competition and the D.R.J.F.L clubs over these last three years. I have been very fortunate to be involved as Interleague coach with people like “Joey” Tuplin, Shane Smith, Felix Fraraccio, Rob Charles ,Pat Connell and Gavin Rutherford. Their contribution has been sensational, as has the enormous amount of work by the league’s administration in Rebecca Wyhoon, Lori Woodcock and Ben O’Brien. My part is very small

compared to these contributions. To the training staff in Karen Webb, Naomi Booker, Francis Van der Weele and Syrian Peries, thankyou. The umpires played an enormous part in this year’s successfully run carnival, they did a truly professional job, with no complaints from anyone.

The parents’ support of the Interleague was very important and I thank them. The players who prepared themselves and put in over the entire carnival were fantastic. They played like a team on a mission from the first game to the last game. Carl Morandi, as captain, was a great influence on the team and played accordingly - even if he can’t dance, he can play footy! Alexandra’s Luke Heard, being the first player representing his club in the YVMDFL team, was the dominant ruckman over the carnival. Dean Carswell dominated the CHF position, as did Joel Godbee-Lingard at fullback.Although it was tough to rotate seven interchange players over 120 minutes of football, we tried our best. The result of the

first game was a highlight, and the come-from-behind victory in the last match topped off the weekend. For the input of the coaches around the League and the Monbulk Football Club in providing the training venue and meals, thankyou on behalf of the players. To Nan Cleven and Co, thanks for everything, especially your time. It will be interesting to see our U18 players starting to play senior interleague, as the culture starts to come through the ranks.

Netball Report

CALIDA HAWKINS

The 2006 season reflected the success of the introduction of netball into the league in 2005, with all Div 1 YVMDFL sides producing a senior netball team and a majority of sides were able to fill both a reserve and senior team.

The dominant teams of 2005, Healesville, Monbulk and Upwey settled into the top of the 2006 ladder, and little separated these teams when they met. Monbulk held the top position for most of the year, but Upwey finished on top due to percentage. Mount Evelyn and Woori Yallock were slow starters, whose strength developed as the season progressed - Mount Evelyn, showed a lot of potential. Wandin remained consistent and all three sides fought for a finals place throughout the season. The bottom half of the ladder saw Gembrook remain one step ahead of Belgrave and Silvan, while Olinda, although competitive, were unable to register a win.

Monbulk easily defeated Healesville, Mount Evelyn knocked Woori Yallock out. Mount Evelyn met their demise the following week against Healesville and Monbulk beat Upwey by a goal to have a weeks rest before the grand final.

Upwey and Healesville met in the preliminary final. Healesville looked to have the game in the bag but the persistence of the young Upwey side helped them secure their position in the 2006 grand final. The grand final saw Monbulk hit the lead early. It was a good fight from Upwey but Monbulk maintained their lead throughout the game to win comfortably.

In B-grade, Monbulk dominated number one position and retained their spot leading into reserve finals. The first finals saw a close game against Healesville and Woori, with the Bloods winning by one goal, and a loss for Mount Evelyn with Upwey winning by 30 goals.Upwey met Monbulk the following week and beat the Hawks by 10 goals to secure their place in the first B-Grade grand final, and Healesville defeated Mount Evelyn. The preliminary final against Monbulk and Healesville was a good fight by both sides but Healesville had all the answers, denying the grand final favourites in Monbulk a shot at the flag.

The 2006 B-grade Grand Final against Healesville and Upwey played out in a similar fashion to the A-grade game. Healesville started strongly and Upwey could not catch up. Healesville played a great game and took home the flag.

Congratulations to Monbulk A-grade and Healesville Bgrade. No doubt, all sides will return stronger and more determined in Season 2007.

ANITA WOODS

Netball Interleague Coach

fter a successful introductory year of netball in First Division last year, 2006 saw the inclusion of netball in both divisions, with every club (bar one) having at least one team.

Division 2 welcomed Alexandra and Thornton- Eildon, who have fielded several teams in their previous league for many years, so they came along well experienced. Last year’s runners up in Warburton- Millgrove were also appearing in the competition, setting it up to be a ripper of a season, with Yarra Junction, South Belgrave, Yarra Glen and Emerald making up the rest of the group.

The season got underway with arch rivals Alex and Thornton going head to head, with Alex coming out victors by 12 goals. In other games, results were Emerald defeating Sth Belgrave and Yarra Junction to dominate for Yarra Glen and Warburton not playing due the bye.

By the end of round four, the top 4 teams had pretty much been decided: Yarra Junction, Alex, Thornton and Warburton - it was just a case of what the order at season’s end.

Yarra Junction set the pace all season, they were the team everyone needed to beat to be in the running for finals glory. Emerald and Sth Belgave were both big improvers and a win against them was well earned. In a great effort, newcomers Yarra Glen supplied two teams all year – they were stronger at home but struggled to find their feet away from home soil.

During finals time, we saw Warburton strongly defeated by Thornton, ending their season and Yarra Junction headed straight into the grand final. The following week saw Thornton again too strong for their opponent Alexandra and they found themselves playing in the grand final. In the final & major game of the year, Thornton had their grand final hopes severely dashed early doors, as Yarra Junction jumped out of the gates full steam ahead, and they never looked back, as they had done all season - Yarra Junction clear winners by 14 goals.

The B grade competition had only 5 teams and, not being as strong as the A grade, it saw a big gap separating first on the ladder over the other top 3 contenders - Warburton-Millgrove took the cup honors after being undeated all season.

Congratulations not only to the winners, but to all teams contending in A and B grades this season, it was a wonderful effort all round.

Good luck to all the teams participating next season.

Yarra Ranges Umpires Association

YRUA

Inthe preseason, a new initiative from the VCFL directed all Country Football Leagues to administer their umpiring bodies. Previously, the Yarra Ranges Umpires Association had appointed and employed the Umpires Board. Due to the late resignation of the previous Umpiring Board, the 2006 Umpires Board was not appointed until late March. By this time, we had lost numerous umpires who had moved to other Leagues and some who had retired. Recruitment at this stage was near impossible and, as an appointments board, we knew that we would not have the required number of umpires to ensure that each game had two official field umpires. The sudden loss left us with 40 umpires who were required to cover 54 positions each week. We achieved this by asking clubs to provide a field umpire in the reserves games, to be “chaperoned” by one of our members. The clubs responded magnificently and, due largely to their commitment and support, we managed to see the season through, which was an eye-opener for those who thought that clubs and their supporters “have it in for the umps”. If anyone had any misgivings about the camaraderie and “giving a helping hand”, then season 2006 was a glowing example of just how close-knitted we as a league are. We embraced a very difficult situation and, thanks to all concerned, we managed to succeed. This system was well accepted by the clubs and from all observations and feedback, it was a success. These club umpires performed to a good standard and, in fact, many were ex-umpires in other Leagues. Some of these club umpires have shown an interest in furthering their umpiring careers and I am sure that we will be welcoming many to our fold next year. The Umpires Board would sincerely like to thank all these club umpires and also the players and the “Fair Dinkum” supporters for the manner in which they showed their appreciation of the efforts of all our all umpires and the clubs for the proactive support throughout this season – we believe that this initiative has given the clubs a greater understanding and tolerance of the umpiring fraternity.

In June, the Board was asked to supply umpires for the Interleague series. Scott Walker (Field) Dane Madden and Samuel Lai (Boundary), Harold Marsh and Andrew Marshall (goal) were given the privilege and honour to umpire the Senior Football Series. Field, boundary and goal umpires were also supplied for the Under 18 games. These games were of a very high standard and all our umpires proved that once again they are equal to Umpires from any other Leagues. In past years, our league has produced many players of exceptional talent, some reaching the highest level. We, as umpires, have also tasted success, in particular Damian Sully, who is now umpiring in the AFL, and Michael Vozzo, who officiated as a field umpire in this year’s AFL grand final. Ian Burrows is also running as an AFL boundary umpire, and all the above have been coached at YRUA level,

so a pathway to higher levels clearly exists for umpires in the YVMDFL.

Despite the lack of numbers, the Umpires Board decided that three Field Umpires would be used in each of the finals games. The standard of football increases in finals and our decision proved worthwhile, as the games were fast and skilful and were well umpired. For a number of our umpires, this was the first year that they had been appointed for finals and all acquitted themselves extremely well. In another new concept for the YVMDFL, the 1st and 2nd division Senior Grand Finals had three boundary umpires officiating. This idea proved successful as the speed of the games has increased. For all those umpires selected to umpire a Grand Final, the Board would like to congratulate you as all your hard work and dedication throughout the season was rewarded.

At the Medals Night, the winners of the John Edwards Awards for season 2006 were announced. Scott Walker (field), Brad Scicluna (boundary) and Sean Lowe (goal) were all worthy winners of these awards and the Umpires Board would like to congratulate them. During our presentation evening, Scott Ashworth was the worthy recipient of the Golden Whistle award. Fittingly, Scott also umpired in our Division 1 senior grand final.

To all members of the Yarra Ranges Umpires Association I would like to commend you on your dedication and commitment this year. With the lack of numbers many umpires willingly volunteered to umpire two matches in a day. To these umpires, the Board is very grateful and appreciates all your efforts and cooperation.

The Umpires Association, with Leigh Walters as President, worked extremely hard and tirelessly assisting the Board in the smooth running of umpiring in this League. So to Leigh and all his committee, we thank you for all your time and efforts.

To Peter Tomlins (Boundary Umpire Coach), Darren Holt (Goal Umpire Coach), Neil Ashworth (Observer), and Scott Walker (Fitness Coach), we thank you for your assistance and support, as you all helped make our jobs so very much easier.

In 2007, we have some new faces on board: Peter Cameron (Director), Darren Holt (goals coach), Bill Walker (fitness and Boundary coach) & Will Eastmure (Secretary). Peter Cameron has already put in place a major overhaul of the umpiring department, and all clubs should see the benefits of Peter’s experience, enthusiasm and dynamic personality in 2007.

YVMDFL Media

The season started all the way back in April, where we saw the old firm of Leo, Tony and myself joined this year by Matt Ewart. Matt was stepping in for departed John Kehoe, who ventured to Canberra for work. Once again, we were well supported by the team at 3MDR 97.1 FM who, every week, offered us the studio support needed to make sure the broadcast of every game went smoothy and without any problems. Special mention to Darren, Dale, Jason and Wes, as they were the main players in the studio for us. The season looked to hold many questions in regards to who was going to be the premier team in both divisions. Both divisions of football were highly successful but the standouts were Vincent Muccitelli (Warburton Millgrove) and Ryan Hall (Thornton Eildon) having 100 goal seasons, with Vincent kicking in excess of 170 for the season. 1st division also had a 100 goal kicker with Jye Conrau from Healesville. The media team also awarded a goal and mark of the year and they went to Paul Marshall (UT) and Dean Carswell(SIL) respectively.

Commodore Press Division Two Seniors

We looked forward to seeing the improvement and response to Warburton’s relegation to 2nd division. It was their first time in the division and their response was probably more than most expected to see. Going through the season undefeated and winning both the senior and reserve grand finals shows the strength that the club will take back into 1st division in season 2007. The inclusion of Alexandra and Thornton/Eildon was also going to provide us with some new players and teams to call during the season. Both didn’t disappoint the media team as they provided us with some exciting football during the season and one would like to think that they will build on the success they had this year. In the end the 7 sides chasing Warburton in the hope of causing some sort of upset come finals time didn’t eventuate though Thornton/Eildon came closest in the grand final but a new standard of footy has been set in 2nd division to which the competing clubs can aspire.

Compass Group

Division One Seniors

First division looked to be a race in two as Upwey and Monbulk set the early pace for flag favouritism. As the season unfolded, 3 other sides stamped themselves as contenders for the flag with Healesville, Woori Yallock and Silvan all playing football worthy of a grand final appearance. During the season, we saw many games go against the expected grain, with sides like Wandin and Gembrook being able to show that they could match it with the top sides, but they lacked consistency. In the end, it was consistency and experience that shone through with Upwey-Tecoma and Monbulk making the grand final. Upwey were trying to win their first senior flag since 1999, while Monbulk were trying to make it back-to-back flags to emulate the success of seasons 97/98. After a tight 1st, half Monbulk was able to exert its influence on the game and run out convincing winners and achieve back to back flags.

Finally I would like to thank Tony Foo, Leo Groenewegen and Matt Ewart for their efforts during the season, as

without their input to the broadcasts it would not nearly be as successful as it is. The opportunity to be involved with the radio broadcast has been fantastic from a personal point of view and I appreciate the board giving me the opportunity to hold down that position. Hopefully the radio broadcast can take the next step in the coming seasons and be the best in country football.
