President’s Report
What a season 2014 turned out to be! Exciting, fluctuating, changes in administration, structure, the Yarra Ranges Commission, a new Director of Umpiring, our inaugural patron, the return of Thornton Eildon FNC, etc…
With 2013 behind us, the YVMDFNL was all guns blazing with all clubs looking for a fresh beginning in 2014. But as usual, best laid plans don’t always go accordingly! CEO Steve Walter resigned after being offered a new position as CEO of the Knox Basketball Association, and departed with our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for what he did within our League during his 7 + years of tenure. Also, during this time the new Yarra Ranges Commission came into being under Chairman Tony Mitchell, Vice Chair Mark Sargent, and Commissioners Shane Smith & Doug Evans.
It was decided that after the departure of our CEO, the new role would incorporate the roles of CEO and Region General Manager (RGM), and to this end, after a very long and arduous process, we were able to announce in June that Mr Gordon Sumner was appointed to this role. It has certainly been a “baptism of fire” for him, but, with his local knowledge, business and financial background, I am happy to say that Gordon has settled in well. Also it gave us great pleasure to announce Joy Murphy as our inaugural Patron. Joy is an elder of the Wurundjeri people and a well respected member of our football/netball family within the YVMDFNL.
To all our member clubs, and a special “welcome back” to Thornton Eildon FNC, I congratulate and thank them for supplying an avenue for our communities to partake in Football and Netball.
Our final series was once again successful and exciting and I congratulate all of our premiership teams and clubs.
To our hosting clubs, I thank and congratulate you on providing a first class venue to display our Football and Netball. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our sponsors. To our business and naming rights sponsor – The Bendigo Community Banks (Natalie Gould), we thank you for your ongoing support in the local area, as you do throughout Victoria. High Mountain Spring Water (Charles Exton) has supported the YVMDFNL via Division 1 for many years. Swenrick Constructions (David &Toni Carter) have continued with their Division 2 support. Netball has long been the domain of Sticks Yarra Valley (Darren Edwards), and we sincerely thank them. Well known figure Les King via YV Financial Services has supported Division 1 &2 Reserves for a number of years. Our weekly awards for football & netball have benefited from the generosity of Narellan Pools (Amanda), for some time and I know the players of both football and netball really appreciate their input.
Our broadcast partners via 3MDR (97.1 FM) – Phil Ruck, and Valley Vision (Jason Sach) continue to provide an avenue for those who can’t make it to the games. We thank them for their
professionalism in what can sometimes be a trying exercise in getting “on the air”. To my broadcast mates in Tony Foo and “newbie” David Wallace, thankyou for the year and hope you both continue on again.
Interleague is always an integral part of our League. With a home game this year against the Mallee Football League, it was satisfying to come away with a big win, but a bit disappointing that they didn’t bring an U/18s or Netball team. This victory places the YVMDFNL back in the top ten of AFL Vic Country Leagues. For this I would to like to congratulate Coach Jarrod Bayliss (Wandin), Assistants Josh Taylor (Emerald) and Steve Hickey (Mt Eveleyn). To our ever loyal trainers Karen Webb, Frances Van Der Weele, Rachel Credlin, and Natalie Tesoriero, many thanks. I also appreciate the cooperation of the Woori Yallock FNC and especially, President Peter Witkowski for the use of their facilities.
Our umpires also went through an administration change at the top with the appointment of the highly respected Trevor McGary as Director of Umpiring. Along with his staff of John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Bob Allan, and Tony Cross I think that it has been one of the most consistent years in umpiring. I’m also glad to announce that Trevor has been reappointed for season 2015.
Our Presentation Night was once again held at the York on Lilydale, and congratulations go to all the award winners. A special thanks to all those who helped organize the event. I
would like to acknowledge our MC Rick Wall (OFCFNC) on the professionalism he brings to the event.
To our staff of RGM Gordon Sumner, Kate Upton, Gayle Seeger, thankyou. I would like to especially acknowledge Football Operations Manager Judy Orren, on her work this year in the absence of a CEO for almost 6 months. It was a great effort and we all within the League should applaud her on a job well done.
To my fellow directors Jodi Chandler, Mick Hill, Bill Heppell, Mike Fleming, Bill Kuys, Cameron Hutchinson – thank you for the time and involvement you have given to community football and netball.
A special thank you goes to our outgoing directors Mark Sandilands and Mark Mays. The support and advice you have given me personally has been invaluable, and I hope to see you both around the League next year.
To our wives, husbands and partners thank you for allowing us to do what we love.
Finally, to all our clubs, thank you for your continued support and input throughout season 2014 and I hope to see you all in 2015.

Regional General Managers Report
It has been a very different year for the YVMDFNL with the introduction of a Commission model as opposed to the regular Federation model which has been in place for a long time. With this change comes some confusion and perhaps doubt until the product and increased service for affiliates can be given a chance to show what benefits it can really provide.
The Yarra Ranges Commission which incorporates the YVMDFNL, DRJFL and YRUA being the 13th state wide commission started in line with all other areas in Victoria with the AFL Victoria Country’s belief that grass roots football needed to be progressed in this manner, after the recommendations from the Peter Jackson review into country football. Even in the short time our commission has been established it has already provided clubs with much needed assistance in obtaining the right advice, support and funding for their varied club improvements and projects. This support will only increase to benefit all our clubs in the future with a strong alliance with local shires and councils
The transition is taking place slowly but it is up to all and sundry to support this system so that football in the Yarra Ranges remains strong and continues to be the cornerstone of our community.
To our League President Mr Leo Groenewegen thank you for your endless commitment to the League and also for your support of myself in this unfamiliar transition time that we currently face together.
To the Board Directors Mark Sandilands, Mike Fleming, Mick Hill, Mark Mays, Bill Heppell, Bill Kuys, Cam Hutchison and Jodie Chandler, your support of Leo, myself and office staff has been greatly appreciated and respected within our League. It can sometimes be taken for granted that a League just runs itself but
without your volunteered time and effort it is not possible for this to happen. Also could I give a special thanks to our League patron Aunty Joy Murphy for her important contributions and support throughout the season.
The YVMDFNL would not be a success without its continued association with its sponsors and their generosity towards our community based football and netball League. It is up to everyone with an association in our League to ensure that their support does not go unnoticed and that we all try to return support to their businesses whenever possible. Sponsorship is not just a donation it’s a partnership that needs to work both ways to secure a future association with each other. We are committed to expand our relationships with all of our sponsorship partners and value add wherever possible.
The Bendigo Community Banks within the Yarra Valley continue to make contributions towards the improvement of our local communities and facilities and what a magnificent contributor they are to our community. We are proud to be known as the Yarra Valley Mountain District “Community Bank” Football and Netball League and it is our wish that people within all Leagues identify that the Community Bank has a major association with the YVMDFNL. Many thanks is extended to Natalie Goold, Mark Nolan and all of the local Community Bank Branches for your continued support.
Our Division One Senior’s naming sponsor in High Mountain Spring Water and the long association that Charles Exton has had with the league can not be valued highly enough.
Our Division Two Senior’s naming sponsor in Swenrick Constructions and the continued support of David Carter not just financially but also hands on during finals is to be commended.
Our Reserves naming sponsor in Yarra Valley Financial Services and Les King continue to provide support not only for football, but also with the Umpires Association and his role as Umpires President.
To Sticks Yarra Valley and Darren Edwards for their amazing support of the League in particular our Netball for many years now is truly appreciated.
To all other valued sponsors Schweppes, Russell Athletics, Narellan Pools, All Trophies, Victor Sports, Bayswater Cake Kitchen, York on Lilydale, Sherwood, Cougar Sportswear and Cooka Sports Marketing our League would not continue to progress without your continued support.
Huge congratulations must go to our Umpires Association with their commitment and continued development of the umpires. To Trevor McGary, John Edwards and staff it must be said, that your organisation is to be commended on its professionalism and its ability to build members both male and female and mould them into quality umpires and people. Well Done.
Tribunals have always been an important part of football and to have quality people in charge of this area within our league is very reassuring. To Greg Black, Gary Tippett, Matthew Tippett, Craig West, Fury Di Pietro, Harold Bromley and Keith Thompson our League is indebted to your contribution and we hope to have your association for many years to come, as has been the case in the past.
Our football and netball coverage both through Radio and Valley Vision provide our supporters with coverage that only a few others Leagues undertake. Our President Leo Greonewegen, Tony Foo and David Wallace donate tireless hours on radio to promote our brand admirably within the Yarra Ranges Region. Also Jason Sach and Valley Vision a thank you for providing support in promoting our game.
To the people who actually provide the show on weekends our footballers, netballers, coaches and support staff, you all are to be congratulated on your efforts throughout the year. The key ingredient to any successful football and netball League is participation and I sometimes think we forget this in favour of a win at all cost attitude. I’m all for winning, but it must not come at a cost to building your club and its culture.
Every club in our League is to be congratulated not only for results but for the wonderful pathway they provide our young people. A football/netball club is the hub of any community and the direction we want our kids to go is often determined by the values that the club holds and the culture that it creates.
I would like to thank Ben Bainbridge, Paul Mainey and his staff at the Yarra Ranges Shire for their excellent presentation and maintenance of our grounds during the finals period. I would like to also thank the Shire of Murrindindi for their assistance at Thornton, Yea and Alexandra during the finals, as well in allowing us to us Marysville for the one off game between Emerald and Warburton Millgrove this was greatly appreciated.
In Division One football, congratulations go to the Woori Yallock Football Club seniors and coach Danny Ryan for making it three in a row. What a huge effort that is and a wonderful example set by your club. We wish Danny all the best in whatever he decides to do in the future and thank him for his contribution to our League. In the reserves top side Upwey took the honours and again in the thirds top side Healesville did the same.
Division One netball had mixed results with congratulations going to Belgrave for completing a fantastic year by winning the
In Division Two football, congratulations goes to the Yarra Glen Football Club seniors and coach Dean de Munk for an emphatic win and promotion to Division one. The reserves was taken out by Seville and the thirds by Woori Yallock.
Division Two netball saw a magnificent effort by the Yarra Glen Netball sides to take honours in A Grade, A Reserve and B Grade with Yea taking out B Reserve.
In Veterans football congratulations to Wandin on an incredible season.
Early on in the year saw our interleague senior football take on the Mallee Football League at Woori Yallock and congratulations must go to Jarrod Bayliss and his coaching staff for an emphatic victory over the visitors. This further progresses the YVMDFNL up the ladder into 10th position in Victoria which in itself is a remarkable effort for a League of our size. Let’s take another scalp against Gippsland next year to move a little closer to the big boys.
Congratulations to all the trophy winners at our presentation evening and with a special thank you to Judy, Kate and Gayle for organising a great night. To Rick Wall for his job as MC at the presentation evening thank you also for your continued support of our League
Lastly, I would like to thank my staff members in Judy Orren, Kate Upton, Gayle Seeger and Dean Rice for their fantastic work ethic and assistance they have extended to me since taking on the Regional General Manager role in what has been an enormously challenging and unique year for the YVMDFNL, their continued support for me personally during my first season, has been greatly appreciated.

Finance Report
Although the League is still in a very financially sound position with capital reserves and accumulated profits, season 2014 has produced a $26622 loss for the year. This loss can be attributed to a number of factors over the season and will certainly be rectified in 2015 and beyond.
Sponsorship for both High Mountain Spring Water and Yarra Valley Financial Services for the 2014 season were both included in last year’s figures (2013) not allowing us to have any income shown in 2014 which reverts to $27,000 in total.
High Mountain has been a challenge and this company does require a high level of management to ensure they meet their obligation to us.
A full finals gate reimbursement back to participating clubs was undertaken this year as opposed to a reduced reimbursement last financial year with the expenditure difference of $7,000.
The employed staffing for finals took a sizeable increase $6,000 which has been discussed and will be rectified next season with proposed new gate attendants and security options being assessed. The League office wages and salaries increased due to the appointment of two new part time employees to further develop the League. A Football Record expense increase of $7000 is currently being investigated.
A full review and stocktake was undertaken, with old and discontinued lines removed, this created an adjustment of $15,000 stock adjustment processed as to bring our stock back to a base figure going forward. We have also reviewed the depreciation on the League owned vehicle and have increased the right down percentage under the guidance of our auditors.
Our major expense is Valley Vision with expenditure continuing to increase and this expense must be addressed and whether we continue to provide this service under the present structure. Our loss this past season for Valley Vision is $44,500 and approx $42,000 for 2013 and accumulated losses over the past four seasons of approx $ 140,000. There needs to be considerable discussion in regards to these continued losses and I’d strongly recommend that the service provided is scaled down to be at worse, a break-even venture. I feel this expense could be better utilised in coach development, expansion of services offered to both football and netball, employee development and other key initiatives I have in mind.
Generally speaking our expenses increased dramatically and certainly the main focus going forward will be to minimise costs in a number of areas as noted above, however, certainly not to the detriment of developing and improving the health of our League and our game within our region.
Even after making a loss the Board has still supported the clubs and have announced a rebate of $20,000 for the supporting clubs that have reached the necessary threshold of purchases in the 2014 season. Moving forward we continue to encourage clubs to purchase through the League, support our suppliers and sponsors so we continue to grow our relationships, this will assist in gaining financial bonuses come seasons end. These purchases also help the League in regards to its buying power, offering more than competitive prices to and this gives us the ability to provide clubs with the lowest possible prices.
Sponsorship has also been a challenge this season with the majority of contracts being expired and up for formal review.
Sales by Club as at 30 September 2014

Finance Report
I have spoken to many of our current sponsors and will be negotiating suitable arrangements with them all. We must keep in mind sponsors support us, so we need wherever possible extending and value added back to our much needed sponsors. Looking on the bright side our finals receipts were similar to last year with a small increase to Division One and a small decrease to Division Two.
Having only been in my position as RGM for a short period of time, I will certainly be looking to improve our financial position in the future, with a strategic structure and plan moving forward, using our existing staffing structure to improve our bottom line performance. Yes our balance sheet looks reasonably healthy, and this has taken many years of hard work from our existing and past boards to achieve this, however we must find different avenues in increasing profitability going forward in an effort to reverse this year’s loss. This will be one of my key objectives to ensure financial strength from 2015 and beyond.

INDEPENDENT
AUDIT REPORT
To The Members of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated
We have audited the accompanying financial report, being a special purpose financial report, of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated, which comprises the statement of financial position as at 31 October 2014, the statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year then ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, and the statement by members of the board.
Board Members Responsibility for the Financial Report
The members of the board of Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated are responsible for the preparation of the financial report, and has determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1, is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act [Victoria] and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The board members responsibility also includes such internal control as the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditor’s Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We have conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the association’s preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view, in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the association’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the officers, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.
Qualification
Cash transactions form a large part of finals income which are a source of revenue for the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated. The Yarra Valley Mountain District Football & Netball League Incorporated has determined that it is impracticable to establish complete control over the collection of cash transactions prior to entry into its financial records. Accordingly, as the evidence available to us regarding revenue from this source was limited, our audit procedures with respect to finals income had to be restricted to the amounts recorded in the financial records. Approximately one report per 15 games and 1 yellow card on average every 3 games. Perhaps some discipline areas to be looked at within some clubs, however, player behaviour must always be a focus and the League will always look for improvements in both the amount of players yellow carded and reported.

· 16 for “Striking”
· 4 for “Engaging in rough conduct”
· 5 for “Using abusive, insulting or threatening language”
· 1 for “Tripping another person”
· 1 for “Any act of misconduct”
With over 500 games played, we average approximately one report for every 18 games.
The YVMDFNL would like to thank & acknowledge the efforts of Mr Greg Black, Mr Gary Tippett & Mr Matthew Tippett and Craig West in their roles as Chairman of the tribunal and also thank the efforts of tribunal members, Fury Di Pietro, Harold Bromley and Keith Thompson.
Interleague Report - Football
The Yarra Valley Mountain District ‘Community Bank’ Football Netball League Senior interleague team played host to the Mallee FL on the 24th May at Woori Yallock. The Yarra Valley ran out comfortable winners and has put themselves back in the top 10 will be a trip to take on Gippsland FL in 2015.
SENIORS
Yarra Valley MDFNL 25.12.162 defeated Mallee FL 8.7.55
Conditions were good for football, the ground was a bit soft in spots due to the rain that fell on Friday but it had no bearing on the standard of football that was played. Yarra Valley came out strongly and got the jump and used the ball far more effectively and played the ground and its conditions well. A 7 goal quarter of which 5 belonged to Michael Fowkes (Wandin) saw the Yarra Valley take a comfortable lead at the first break by 38 points. The Mallee fought back in the 2nd and kicked 5 goals but the strength of the running players like Luke McKenna (Emerald), Nick Keegan (Olinda) and Rhys Chapman (Thornton Eildon) were always going to make it tough. The lead was extended to 43 points at the major break. The dual spearheads up forward for the Yarra Valley in Michael Fowkes (Wandin) and Daniel Waters (Upwey Tecoma) turned out to be a huge headache for the Mallee in the 3rd and they were well supported by the small forwards in Daniel Hurley (Yarra Glen), Jim Messis (Wandin) and Jarrod Bayliss (Wandin). The Yarra Valley held the Mallee to one goal in the 3rd while they managed to kick 5.5. The result ended up being a runaway win for the Yarra Valley by a resounding 107 points. Taking out the AFL VIC Country (Best on Ground Medals) were Michael Fowkes for the Yarra Valley and Coleman Schache for the Mallee. Shane Williams was voted by his peers as best on ground for the Yarra Valley.

Netball Association Championships
The YVMDFNL competed in Netball Victoria’s Association Championships on Sunday the 29th of June @ the SNHC in Melbourne. Out of all the players invited to our selection day, we only had 4 of them actually play which gave a great opportunity to players in our League that may not have played at this level before. This gave us a squad of 8 Division 1 players and 3 Division 2 players.
The day unfolded in a positive direction with a great first up win against North Central 19-6, Nikki Phillips and Ty Coppinger keeping North Central to 1 goal in the second half with unfaultable defence.
Game 2 was never going to be easy when you’re up against Ovens and Murray FNL. These girls are not only strong, but very smart netballers. If you don’t play a controlled game the result won’t go in your favour against them, going down by 6-12.
Game 3 was an exciting game to be a part of, giving opportunity to our Division 2 girls. Georgia Taylor stepped up to the challenge being a strong target in GS, shooting 13 out of the teams 16 goals against MPFNL. Winning this game by 4.
Game 4’s win over Sunbury NA was credit to the work rate of the centre court in attack and defence, Sam Coppinger, Rachael Hickey and Amy Taylor getting depth over the transverse line created less chance of error in our delivery to the goalers. YVMDNFL 18 to Sunbury NA 5.
Game 5 we came up against Alberton who were sitting undefeated. A classy team, that were exactly that ‘A TEAM’! Nothing we did had a real impact on their game, but the girls didn’t walk away not trying. Our defensive pressure in this game and all day made them work the ball until the right option did present. Alberton winning 12-4.
Game 6 against Mid Gippsland saw Georgia Taylor and Rachael Hickey strike up a great goaling combination shooting 21 goals between them. Carly Baker was such a versatile player all day staring in WD in this game creating and getting important turnovers to walk away winners 21-8.
The Netball side was represented by:
Coach: Kate Upton
Assistant Coach: Lauren Tesoriero
Rachel Hickey Mount Evelyn
Jemma Matthews Mount Evelyn
Carly Baker Wandin
Sam Coppinger Wandin
Ty Coppinger Wandin
Jackie Cullimore Wandin
Nikki Phillips Wandin
Ruby Tidd Wandin
Georgia Taylor Yarra Glen
Brooke Lloyd Yea
Amy Taylor Yea
Game 7 we took on the Murray Netball League. First half was low scoring in our favour 5-3, making a change in the second half with Jackie Cullimore into GS, Brooke Lloyd in GK, Ruby Tidd into GD saw a nice finish up to the day winning 12-8.
The girls brought competitiveness, intensity and a great will to want to win for our League, finishing third in our pool and missing out by one game to make finals.
Umpires Report
Firstly, I would like thank Stephen Walter and Leo Groenewegen for giving me the opportunity to fill the role of Director of Umpiring this season. I have thoroughly enjoyed the role and look forward to 2015 with great enthusiasm and confidence in knowing that the changes and direction that we introduced in 2014 will continue to improve the performance of all umpires.
The YRU group have enjoyed an excellent season with strong numbers in all disciplines resulting in very few double up games for the field umpires. Our boundary numbers remained strong throughout the season and because of this we were able to run three boundaries in most games each round. We must thank our goalies for their commitment each Saturday in often running a field appointment in the under 18’s or reserves prior to their senior game. I would like to thank all umpires for their dedication and reliability to their respective games each week.
This season we have tried to build a stronger partnership between the DRJFL umpires and YRU senior group to create a pathway for the younger umpires to gain experience in umpiring under 18 or reserves footy, which will hopefully lead into umpiring senior footy. Through the fantastic work of Patrick Van Dyk and his assistants Jason Newman and Andrew Egginton we have introduced six umpires into YV footy in 2014 and must now look for two or three of these younger umpires to regularly umpire senior footy in 2015. This pathway needs to be a priority for future seasons to ensure that younger umpires are continually gaining the experience and progressing into senior footy. Thank you to the parents for allowing your children to umpire in the DRJFL and YVMDFNL and I hope we are meeting your expectations as mentors and role models.
At the start of this season, I presented to the group a Game plan/ key focus areas document that all umpires were expected to abide to during the season. This document was presented to the coaches at the pre season meeting, so that they were all aware of what our expectations were of every umpire in each discipline throughout the season. We were pleased with the way that all umpires adapted to the game plan and although for some it was a change of direction to the way they had umpired previously,
we were trying to obtain consistency from the whole group. Communication and building a stronger respectful relationship between the clubs and umpires is an area that I hope we can continue to improve in 2015. Thank you to Brad Coller (Thornton Eildon), Leigh McCombe (Gembrook Cockatoo) and Brendan Woods (Warburton Millgrove) for inviting me to speak to their playing groups and hopefully giving them an insight into the requirements of the umpires.
Interchange of umpiring groups with other leagues provides our umpires with gaining extra umpiring experiences and also shows the quality of our umpires to those leagues, and throughout 2014 we had interchanges with the Ballarat Football League and Casey Cardinia League.
Congratulations to the following umpires on their respective awards –
• Best Field Umpire – Jason Newman
• Best Boundary Umpire – Lucas Taylor
• Best Goal Umpire – Bryan Sultana
• Best Finals Performance – Alan Seymour
• Golden Whistle Award – Jes Skerritt
• John Edwards Medal – Brenton Damrow
Thank you to my fellow board members in John Edwards, Stephen Edwards and Bob Allen for your support, guidance and commitment to your roles and to Les King and his committee for providing a strong umpires association for all umpires.
2015 will be another exciting season for footy and netball in the Yarra Valley and we look forward to playing our part to a high standard in the continued growth and improvement of the league.
