President’s Report

Welcome to the culmination of the most challenging year we have had in football and netball in my time on the board Despite ever ything that has confronted us we have had a fantastic year of football and netball and ever yone involved is to be congratulated

To me the most pleasing thing is how ever yone has come together to ensure that our league continues to prosper and get better even when faced with the greatest challengers Well done to all the teams that won the ultimate goal and got to share what being involved in teams sports is all about

Special mention to all our clubs that faced the horror of Black Saturday and have come through to ensure that the community spirit and the sense of belonging are alive and prospering

For the first time in our histor y we had the Prime Minister of Australia Mr Kevin Rudd attend our second division grand final and help us celebrate what was a triumph for Australian fighting spirit Speaking of fighting spirit we were joined by Jim Stynes and his family and I am personally ver y thankful for Jim taking the time to join us not long after he was discharged from hospital facing his own personal battle

To our major sponsors and partners , thank you again for your continued belief in grass roots footy and your financial support which makes our competition one we can all be ver y proud of To Mr Charles Exton of High Mountain Spring Water our lead sponsor and partner , thank you for your willingness to come onboard mid year which was an absolute blessing and I look for ward to a long and prosperous relationship between our two organizations To all our other sponsors that show their commitment by way of ongoing support, I can only say thank you and I hope that the relationship is long and fruitful

To the umpires lead this year by Dominic Kearney and John Edwards and assisted by Trevor McGar y, Brad Scicluna and Bob Allen, gentleman thank you for your efforts this year Increased numbers can only help to improve our competition and I hope that this year is only a stepping stone for further increases and improvement across the board

The Under 18 competition is still one of our greatest areas of focus This year we ran with a semi combined structure that worked fairly well and I thank ever yone for their support and understanding.

This year we ran the Certificate 4 in Sports Administration as a joint venture between ourselves and Eastern Football league 24 young Yarra Valley

people graduated with an Australian recognized qualification that has the makings of a truly life changing experience These young folk will hopefully go on to make up the club committees of the future and give them the necessar y skills to be successful This has been one of the most gratifying things that we have done outside running a healthy and thriving football and netball league

The Interleague this year was an absolute pleasure and the results even better To our Interleague Coaches in Mark Sandilands, Brett Fisher and Kate Upton thanks for helping as we continue to build on this ver y important facet of the league which allows us to show case what we can do Hopefully we can continue to get the support from all players and clubs so that we go with the best the Yarra Valley and Mountain District can offer

To Leo, Tony, Ed & Bill who bring the footy to us each week through the radio This has been one of the real pluses to come to our league over the past 10 years and I appreciate all your efforts and time, and hope to hear you calling again next year

The League Presentation night continues to get better and bigger and this year was no exception with over 280 guests in attendance Thanks to Sandy Roberts for hosting again and congratulations to all award winners.

To our office staff, Steve Walter, Judy Orren and Stacey Cooper who bring it all together for us and are the main contact points for the clubs An outstanding year and I personally want to thank you for your time and care with the way you go about your business

To my fellow board members who I have been honored to work with Billy Heppell, Leo Groenewegen, Frank Moss and new members Mick Hill, Jason Leeds & Jodi Chandler Your commitment is nothing short of 1st class and helps to make our league one that we are all ver y proud of

Finally my last Directors thank you is to Shane Smith my Vice President who has informed me that he will not be seeking re-election next year Shane and I started on the board at the same time and his commitment and passion for Yarra Valley Football and Netball speaks for itself Shane I have appreciated the way you have supported me and the league throughout your time and you will be sadly missed. To Deb and the family thanks for allowing us to have Shane for so long

To my wife Beth my final thanks for allowing me the time needed to do the job

Ceo’s Report

CEO Report

The start of season 2009 was filled with excitement as many clubs were confident that their pre-season planning & hard work would deliver significant benefit Unfortunately, Februar y was the month that threw many good plans into disarray The destruction caused by the Black Saturday Fires received worldwide attention, as did our league and our clubs Nothing can ever replace the innocent men, women & children who lost their lives, nor remove the ongoing heartache & struggle from such a devastating loss. Our deepest sympathies are extended to those who have lost family members & mates In the face of all the tragedy, it was deemed still important that the YVMDFL endeavour to accomplish what they do best, that is to continue to deliver a premium sporting service to all of our fire affected communities in a fashion that could lift spirits & morale

As it turned out, the ver y core assets of our football & netball clubs ser ved the wider community with distinction with many of our grounds used as staging & accommodation areas for fire fighters & volunteers In fact the Healesville, Alexandra, Yea & Kinglake grounds were strategic assets in our fight against the fires Congratulations to all clubs who delivered a quality ser vice to their community I would like to personally thank Rick Wall for his support during the 2009 season. After some negotiation, and in partnership with the VCFL, the YVMDFL was able to procure AFL funding for 9 months to support Rick’s position Rick has not only ser ved Kinglake with distinction, he has been invaluable support to me and many of the fire affected clubs this season Rick, congratulations on your contribution you are a valuable community member who delivered above & beyond, thank you

To our sponsors, your involvement with community sport stands you head & shoulders above your competitors. A special thank you must go to Charles Exton & High Mountain Spring Water; Charles stepped up when Compass Packaging had to retire their sponsorship part way during the 2009 season High Mountain Spring Water is an outstanding community focussed organisation & I look for ward to a long standing partnership with Charles Exton & his company

Paul Wolff & Porter Davis Homes are a progressive organisation and have focussed their community support at our under 18 competition Our juniors are our future and in partnership with Porter Davis Homes, I am sure that our future can be assured Paul, thank you for your outstanding support of the YVMDFL.

Central Scaffolds & Brett Fisher are our new football sponsors and I would like to congratulate Brett on his commitment to the YVMDFL Brett also is our U18 Interleague coach who once again, did a great job with our team

To Rob Dolan & Sticks Yarra Valley Wines; Tony Barnes & Barracuda Security; Mike Fleming & Bendigo Bank Upwey Group; Garr y Spark & Cyan Press; Kevin Sheehan & Lilydale International; Rod Lawson & Russell Athletic; Kevin Cooksley & Cougar and Andrew Shenker & Victor Sports, you are all invaluable community sponsors and play a large part in the success of the YVMDFL thank you for your support, it is more valuable than you could imagine

This is my second year in the job, and for many reasons, it was much tougher than my first I could not do my job without the outstanding support of the YVMDFL Board In particular, my express thanks go to

our President Graeme Tuplin & Vice President Shane Smith They both contribute more to this organisation than many would imagine I talk almost on a daily basis with both on all matters Thank you Graeme & Shane, your support was invaluable

Our Directors including Leo Groenewegen, Bill Heppell, Jodie Chandler, Frank Moss, Mick Hill and Jason Leeds are always available and their contribution to the overall success of our League is first-rate

The YVMDFL office staff of Judy Orren & Stacey Cooper was once again key contributors to our success I thank them both for their support of me & our clubs throughout the 2009 season

To all of the Club Presidents and their hard working committees, you are all special individuals who are passionate about your club, your community & your sport Congratulations on your efforts in 2009

To our interleague coaches Mark Sandilands & Brett Fisher, their trainers & support staff your efforts are important ingredients into the successful operation of our League Thank you for your support

Our umpiring group has gone through a significant transition from season 2008 I am delighted that Dom Kearney and John Edwards contributions have been excellent in 2009. A most solid foundation has been established that will lift both our numbers & standards to even greater heights in 2010 They have been well supported by Trevor McGar y, Bob Allen & Brad Scicluna

Our 3MDR radio broadcast team are vital cogs in the YVMDFL football operation Leo Groenewegen leads the team with great professionalism & dedication Leo is well supported by Ed Summer field who may just be famous one day and Tony Foo who is always outstanding support Leo was supported by Bill Heppell & Aaron Walter in times of need, well done to all of the team your broadcast is heard far & wide

Congratulations to all of our grand final winners; your efforts, possibly building up over many seasons, have been rewarded with the ultimate prize Well done to Upwey Tecoma, Olinda Ferny Creek in football & Mt Evelyn & Powelltown in netball, they will all be prized scalps next season for the challengers Kinglake almost produced a fair ytale finish and their brave showing will augur well for their chances in 2010

Almost finally, Shane Smith steps down as a Director & Vice President after 10 years on the Board Shane has been a passionate YVMDFL supporter through thick & thin His priority has always been in the wellbeing and success of our League. Congratulations Shane on what has been an outstanding contribution to the YVMDFL you have made your mark on our sporting community in the most positive of fashions

On a personal note, I wish Shane & Deb the best in their retirement from official YVMDFL duties

Finally, I would like to thank my family, especially Jo- Anne for her great support of me in the busiest of times Families are the most important aspect of our lives, and as clubs become more family focussed their success and ultimately the league’s success is assured

I look forward to the challenges of 2010 and trust that as we all continue to work well together, our netball & football competitions will continually improve & carry on delivering a valuable community service to the many thousands of players & supporters of the YVMDFL

bushfire Report

The YVMDFL was severely impacted by the fires at the beginning of the season. The support and generosity of clubs & community organisations across the globe was sensational The YVMDFL Bushfire Fund was established at the end of Februar y 2009 and has been set up in accordance with the Victorian Government’s Bushfire Fund & Fundraising Act 1998 The fund reports to Consumer affairs on a 6monthly basis The fund is also overseen by the YVMDFL Board of Directors

Total Money Distributed $15,716

Interest earned on the Fund to date is $117

Balance of the YVMDFL Bushfire Fund as at 31/10/09 is $14,298

KFNC takes this opportunity to thank the YVMDFL community for its support during the season.

We are particularly indebted to Chief Executive Stephen Walter for the role he played in ensuring we didn’t go into recess after the fires, and to the Emerald Football Club for their enthusiastic backing for our huge Round One fixture.

We also thank the umpires who helped us whenever possible( with personnel, not adjudication)

KFNC will benefit from infrastructure replacement as a consequence of the fires and hopes to be hosting finals within two to three years

KFNC also raised $200,000 via our Bushfire Appeal That money has been disbursed back in to the community where it’s been most needed

Some have been critical of this decision but when so many people “close to the Club” have perished and the township is in disarray then “football and netball” are secondar y considerations

KFNC’s high profile community role should lock-in support for the Club well into the future

We should also note that Kinglake’s on-field success this season was unrelated to the extraordinar y cash flow

Rather, Kinglake is well sited geographically to attract players from the strong Northern Football League This trend should continue into the foreseeable future

Again, many thanks to ever yone in the “footy family” who helped turn 2009 into one of the better years in the centur y long histor y of a proud Club

independent Tribunal Report

Season 2009 saw a slight increase in reported players over 2008 Of the 17 reports in 2009,

• 1 was for “Front on Contact when player had head over the Ball”

• 12 for “Striking”

• 1 for “Headbutting”

• 1 for “Rough Conduct” and,

• 2 for “Abusive Language”

There were 10 set penalties of one week taken

Considering there were 363 games played in 2009 (including Finals), the result is not too bad however we do have a way to go

Season 2009 was the first time we introduced a set penalty if a player received 4 yellow cards I am pleased to advise that no player received 4 yellow cards, a marked improvement over 2008 for several perennial offenders

The YVMDFL would like to thank & acknowledge the efforts of our tribunal members who generously donate their time to a very important aspect of our operations Greg Black, Gar y Tippett, Harold Bromley, Fur y DiPetro, Keith Thompson, Matthew Tippet and Bill Heppell are to be congratulated on their efforts

Player & spectator behaviour has improved, but there is still work to do I trust that all clubs & coaches ensure that their best efforts are employed to ensure our football & netball is played in the finest sporting spirit

Let’s hope that 2010 sees a reduced number of both Tribunal Hearings and Yellow Cards.

Finance Report

Season 2009 has seen a marked improvement in the balance sheet strength of the YVMDFL. A combination of improved processes, alternative revenue streams and healthier attendances during our finals series (refer table 1) has seen an Operating Profit more than doubled over the 2008 financial year Net Surplus has increased 172 82% to $61,784 This result underpins a sound business model which continues to evolve and improve

A number of assets have been written down, including the Media Truck $7 5k and EBanc $5 2k Bad debts written off total $39,213 which include Compass Group and other long outstanding debtors which we consider to be uncollectable I am pleased to advise that supplier creditors are at less than $1k and debtor balances are at a record low. One of the YVMDFL’s prime objectives is to enhance & sustain balance sheet strength which is always a critical success factor in any flourishing organisation Our cash position has improved and will be enhanced further as the Government grants are realised over the next several months Our financial per formance is underpinned by leveraging opportunities outside of the traditional football operations Nevertheless, the more support your club provides the YVMDFL, the greater the benefits will be to the wider football & netball community and the greater your rebate will be

I am pleased to advise the YVMDFL Board has determined that the 2009 rebate will be $20,000 This will be shared amongst qualifying clubs whose discretionary YVMDFL spend is greater than $6,000 for the 2009 home & away season only, as advised earlier in the 2009 season Purchases during the finals series do not qualify Fifteen clubs have qualified to participate in the 2009 rebate and will share in the $20,000

The breakup of club sales is detailed below in table 2 Table 3 lists rebate allocations for each qualifying club and will be allocated as a credit to your YVMDFL account in December 2009 All in all, a strong financial per formance that augurs well for coming seasons

Lilydale, Victoria 30th November 2009

senior interleague Report

I would first like to congratulate Coach Mark ‘Beaker’ Sandilands on a fantastic result, especially after Interleague 2008 where we were beaten on the last kick of the day

This year the YVMDFL and it’s coaching staff, including ‘Beaker’, new comer Greg ‘Spanner’ Spence (ex Upwey), Neil Gilbert, Rob Charles (both runners on the day) and Jim Martin decided to select a side from players who were committed to the Interleague principle and what it stood for As a result, we ended up with a dedicated bunch of players who bonded together quickly and trained and played accordingly

The game started out at a furious pace, and, if not for some inaccurate kicking for goal the YVMDFL could have been ahead by plenty The first quarter scores being 5 6 36 to 3 1 19 By half time, with our defence well on top being lead by Luke Barclay (Healesville), Danny Hyndman (Woori Yallock), Cam Buckland (Mt Evelyn), the centre corridor well controlled by Scott Tregoning (Olinda Ferny Creek), David Taylor (Monbulk), Josh Kamoen (Upwey Tecoma) and our for ward line on fire with the fast leading full for ward Chris Murphy (Mt Evelyn) and a great display at CHF by Paul Grayling (Wandin) All this was controlled by our centre square specialists in Dean Cleven (Monbulk), skipper Danny Ryan (Woori Yallock) and Matt Stolarczyk (Woori Yallock). With scores at half time being 11 13 79 to 5 2 32, it was a matter of how far for the YVMDFL

The second half was more of the same and I am sure the Bellarine boys were happy to hear the final siren which showed a comprehensive victor y to the YVMDFL Final scores being YVMDFL 18 21 129 to Bellarine 9 8 62

Leading goal scorers were Chris Murphy 5, Paul Grayling 3, Matt Stolarczyk 3, and Mitch Bonuda 2

It was decided to inaugurate the Tony ‘Knobby’ Mitchell medal for the best player of the YVMDFL, and this was awarded to Paul Grayling (Wandin) Other players to stand out were Chris Murphy, Chris Hayes, Josh Kamoen, Danny Hyndman, and Matt Stolarczyk.

Our thanks also go to our dedicated trainers in Karen Webb, Naomi Booker, Francis Van Der Weele, Sriyan ‘Bob’ Peres, Dean Reading

Also many thanks go to our sponsors High Mountain Spring Water and WorkSafe

Looking for ward to next year,

u18s interleague Report

2009 interleague saw us take on the ver y strong Bellarine team at Woori Yallock football ground

Our team was made up of some ver y talented small runners and mid sized players combined with only a few talls We faced a ver y tall, lean running type opposition so our game style needed to be quick, slick and aggressive

The game started at a hectic pace, and although we attacked early, Bellarine took the ascendancy to quarter time leading by 20 pts

Alexander Calder, Nathan Muratore, Patrick Rosier and Daniel Waters were playing well to this point but we were looking for our players to adapt to the pace quicker and slow down the oppositions run

The second quarter saw us peg them back some with some exceptional tackling pressure, Matt Bourchier was doing ver y well at full back as well as Shawn Andueza at centre half back Bellarine held a 13 pt lead at the main break

The third quarter was a ver y intense one with the ball moving quickly from defense to attack and back again, Dylan Troutman and Pat Rosier were getting on top in the mid field and Reece Pepi began to find the goals to bring the YVMDFL to with in 1 pt by three quarter time

The final quarter was a cracker with desperation from both sides to gain the upper hand We had finally realized that it was about contested footy pressure as we forced Bellarine to turn the football over giving us opportunities to clear the ball for ward

With one final for ward thrust, our boys pushed the out of the centre with 30 seconds to go, Reece Pepi marked and goaled to put us 2 pts up and with the final siren seconds away, a ver y memorable win to the YVMDFL

Final Scores: YVMDFL 16 13 (109) def Bellarine 16 11 (107)

Goal Kickers were Reece Pepi 4, Ryan Smith 2, Alexander Calder 2, Blake Walter 2 and Simon Young 2 Better players Patrick Rosier (B O G Medal) Dylan Troutman, Reece Pepi, Jake Uslar, Daniel Waters, Alexander Calder and Nathan Muratore

I would also like to thank my assistant coaches Steve Goodie and Cor y McCall, Runners Greg Rowe and Andrew Giblin, Team Manager Ray Fellows, Trainer Karen Webb and the entire League Board for a very well coordinated Interleague series

netball interleague Report

We had a great turn out this year for our 2009 Interleague tr y outs There was a great range of talent over both Division 1 and 2 to pick from

We decided to go with a squad of 14 this year to allow 4 players the opportunity to participate in training and benefit from the experience of the Interleague process

Training was intense and ver y game focused with set plays, systems and defensive play The girls worked extremely well together and the talk and encouragement at training was at an all time high We knew what was needed to do to beat our opposition come game day, and that was to have a very steady, timed and confident attacking end and a ver y body on body defence end

We had the skill level in the team to beat any team on any given day, but we just had to be able to do it mentally, as we were coming up against a team full of VNL players that had played together for many years and they have a ver y strong defensive game

We were pumped come warm up, and the girls warmed up exactly as planned Taking the court was a little different The first 5 minutes we had the butter flies, dropped balls and our bad placement of passes let us down Then we started to play our game and got right into the game, our plan of body on body defence started to pay off and the turnovers came

We played great netball for 3 quarters, Sam Coller and Melissa Gardner were stand outs in the defence end, along with Jade Hottes and Ella Priestley providing great drive and passing in the attack end, but unfortunately for about 6 mins in the last quarter we mentally let them get to us and we put ourselves under too much pressure With their defensive game solid our flowing attacking game went missing, which cost us the game in the end, losing the game by 2 goals

Finals Scores: Diamond Valley 47 def YVMDFL 45

But all in all the girls worked hard on playing as a team, keeping the talk up and we had great leadership out there The competition level in the Valley is increasing each year and we are already looking forward to next years challenge

The 2009 season at Yarra Valley began in less than ideal circumstances for the umpiring group with the late appointment of myself as the Director

The group assembled for the first time in Februar y with two Sunday sessions in the hills, these sessions being mainly attended by the senior group This core group provided the bulk of the numbers on the training track most nights throughout the season The regular training sessions began at the Knox Athletics Track shortly after these Sunday sessions and as the season neared numbers grew Lectures began the week before the opening round

The Association was approached by the Kinglake Football Club (via the League) to assist with reser ves umpires as their regular club umpires were caught up in the aftermath of the ‘Black Saturday’ fires After a meeting with the umpiring Board, the decision was taken to give Kinglake reser ve games two umpires and this continued throughout the season

My first game as an obser ver was the Division Two Kinglake v Emerald game at Kinglake, which attracted a huge crowd and showed great community support Jason Mc Niece and Paul Shoebridge where in charge of proceedings They set a great standard for the rest of the season, not only for themselves but also for the rest of the group

It is fair to say the feedback the Umpires Board was providing from observations was missing in previous seasons Despite the sometimes-harsh criticism of individuals at times, the vast majority of umpires took the feedback in the right manner They realised that the Umpires Board expectations were high and the quality of the football demanded an equal per formance from the umpires to match the game

After 18 rounds of tough, hard footy the finals began The home-and-away season had given the Umpires Board an idea as to how the umpires were ranked, but the finals could change all that and indeed that proved to be the case The finals were the most analysed games of the season

The Umpiring Board meetings that occurred on the Sunday night to discuss appointments for the following weeks were long with intense discussions Eventually we came to a consensus, our selections were validated on the following weekend until finally we selected the grand final appointments

As I have stated on several occasions to the umpiring group, no grand final position was given lightly, ever yone deser ved their appointment Obviously there are those who were disappointed to not gain a higher position or missed out all together Hopefully those individuals come back next year and tr y to go one better

From a recruiting viewpoint for next year, we are seeking to expand numbers and experience There is work to be done by the Umpiring Board over the summer for this to occur It is fair to say that the core senior group is strong, having built a good rapport with most Clubs The younger, less experienced umpires are progressing well, with several nominated for the V/Line academy next year

From a coaching viewpoint after reviewing the grand finals and editing the DVDs, I will use these examples in sessions next season Again there will be DVD examples used from the AFL/VFL, but extra footage from the Yarra Valley competition will help get the message across

My belief is that the group will understand the Board’s perspective if they can see clear examples of what the Board is asking for

While I do believe the standard of umpiring at the Yarra Valley is ver y good, I firmly believe it can improve next season
