The focus of Season 2017 was one of stability and stabilisation. The AFL Yarra Ranges has seen substantial change over the past four years, both in staff and in competition Structure. With the full commission structure now in place, it has been vital to focus on ensuring that off field (financially and management) and on field (competition structures and development) processes are developed to ensure the competitions sustainability. Though there is still much work to do, the building blocks have been put in place for the long term in 2017.
Importantly in 2017, we have been able to stabilise our financial position. Creating a profitable, sustainable competition is one of the key drivers of the league administration and is vital to ensure off-field stability is achieved. A significant part of a turnaround has been the support of sponsors, new and existing. Once again, the Bendigo Community Bank, as our major sponsor, provides significant support to both the AFL Yarra Ranges and the clubs across the region. Pleasingly, the announcement of this partnership being extended for another three years is welcome.
Long term Partners Yarra Valley Motor Group, Yarra Valley Racing and Tarra Press also agreed to extensions of their current deals, which provides great benefit for the competition moving forward. Brett and the team at Yarra Valley Racing have allowed us the ability to hold first class functions in a heartland of the Yarra Valley and this support is crucial in maintaining our major events as key parts of the season Calendar. Tara Press’s support in the production of The Grapevine, Annual General Reports and all AFL Yarra Ranges Paper work is vital to the league operations. We thank Peter, Tony and Colleen for their ongoing support. Thank you to our apparel and ball suppliers, who continue to provide great support to both the league and clubs, in particular Sherwood, Russel Athletic and Bluegum.
We welcomed several new partners in 2017. Coldstream Cider came on board as the major partner of Netball. This partnership helped us continue to ensure that investment in Netball remains at the fore front of our planning each year. Glenbrae Signs, as our preferred sign partner, enabled us to make notable improvements to the way we present events across our competition. Our partnerships with Sporting Fine Art and Leisure Pools as Finals Partner until 2019 will ensure that we can continue to build our finals series and make them major events in the Yarra Ranges.
Olinda- Ferny Creek created history by winning their first Division 1 premiership in emphatic style, recording the largest winning margin in league history. This coupled with premiership success in the A grade and D grade netball, made 2017 a historic year for the Bloods. The work of the clubs committee, volunteers and coaches to build a Division 1 capable side since returning to Division 1 is a credit to all involved. In the reserves and 18’s Wandin saved their best football for the business end of the season to win two thrilling Grand Finals. Woori Yallock had a terrific season, making the Grand Final in both the Seniors and A Grade and winning B, C and the 17 Netball Grand Finals.
In one of the great AFL Yarra Ranges Grand Finals, Belgrave came from the clouds to win the Division 2 Grand Final. After being relegated in 2016, it capped a remarkable year for the
Magpies, winning the Seniors, Reserves and A Grade Netball Grand Final. Yarra Glen, who made four grand finals in 2017, winning the D Grade Netball Grand Final, had an outstanding 2017 campaign. Kinglake made history in C Grade netball winning their first ever netball premiership, whilst Yea collected more silverware in Netball, winning a dramatic B grade final in absolute thriller.
Mt Evelyn finally claimed that elusive Veterans premiership, defeating Healesville under lights at Emerald. The decision to hold the grand final at night was a successful one, with our highest ever attendance at a Veterans Grand Final. The work of our host clubs across finals cannot be understated. The efforts of volunteers across the region to put on show piece events provides a terrific day for all who attend. We thank our Host Clubs, Yarra Glen, Woori Yallock, Healesville, Emerald, Yarra junction and Wandin for their ongoing support.
Our Junior competition continues to grow, with 91 sides competing across all competitions in 2017. Much of this can be attributed to the growth in girl’s football. The partnership with the EFL in the Eastern Region Girls has seen this competition become the largest junior female competitions in the state, with growth expected to continue to increase in 2018. In a first for the region, Yarra Junction and Mt Evelyn fielded women’s sides in 2017, with Mt Evelyn playing finals in their first year in the competition. 2017 also saw the introduction of U18 Girls in the Eastern Ranges TAC Competition, with several girls in the region selected to represent Victoria at national level. Four players who played junior football in the AFL Yarra Ranges junior competition were drafted in 2017. Wandin’s Joel Garner, who captained Vic Metro in 2017, was drafted to Port Adelaide, joining former Upwey Junior Sam Hayes at the Power. Jayden Stephenson (Upwey) and Jackson Ross (South Belgrave) were also drafted in 2017.
The Junior Grand Finals at Yarra Glen provided a wonderful showcase of what makes our junior competition so unique. Congratulations to our all our 2017 premiers. In the Under 11’s Woori Yallock won a thriller, Healesville capped off an outstanding season to claim the under 12 premiership and Gembrook- Cockatoo played their best footy at the right time of the year to Upset Monbulk in a pulsating Grand Final. In the Under 14’s, history was made with dual premierships being awarded to Mt Evelyn and Healesville after neither could be separated after extra time.
The success of our junior competition relies heavily on the work of a passionate and dedicated group of volunteers. Andrew Gibbons and the Junior Committee of Management continue to put in a tireless amount of work in support of our junior competition. Thank -you to Maxine Armstrong, Ray Fellows, Daren Pryor, Kelly Stokes, Nan Cleven and Shane Collette for their support of Junior football. Darren Pryor, after 10 years of wonderful service, is finishing up. His support of junior football and Interleague has been significant. Daren’s passion for the AFL Yarra Ranges and the Interleague program, is second to none and he leaves a wonderful legacy for the program. Sadly, we lost a passionate member of the AFL Yarra Ranges and Woori Yallock community with the tragic and sudden passing of Shayne “Crazy” Collette. Crazy has contributed significantly to football in the region and will be sadly missed.
The league extends our deepest sympathy of Shayne’s family, friends and the Woori Yallock Junior Football Club.
One of the highlights of 2017 was the performance of our Senior Interleague side, who had one of the competitions most significant wins, defeating Gippsland at Woori Yallock.
Danny Ryan and his team are to be congratulated on the way they have built the Interleague program in recent years. We also thank all the players and clubs for the support of the program. Though unsuccessful, our netball sides and Under 18 side performed valiantly against very strong opposition.
Our Junior interleague sides were very competitive across all competitions with our V-Line boys and girls sides continuing to punch above their weight against much larger regions and competitions. The transition in 2018 to the Vic Metro Championships, will provide greater opportunity for our boys and girls to develop against the best opposition available at their age groups. 2018 will also see a greater alignment with Hawthorn’s Next Gen Academy with our junior development programs. We thank Interleague Sponsors Swenrick and Vital Stats for their support of both Senior and Junior Interleague in 2017.
The successful running of a major sporting organisation relies on the outstanding work provided by both our clubs and our volunteers. As a League, we are only as good as our clubs. The administration and leadership displayed by all clubs is no doubt a great strength of our competition. All of our volunteers deliver an outstanding service to their community and are the very reason we are as successful as we are. Thank-you to all our clubs and their hard-working committees & volunteers who make it all possible.
No game would go ahead, without the support of our dedicated umpiring group. Thank you to Trevor McGrary, Brendan McKenna, John Edwards and Bob Allen for their commitment and continued development of the umpires. We thank our Umpires Association, led by Bryan Sultana on its professionalism and its ability to build members both male and female and mould them into quality umpires and people. Our netball umpires, led by Caz Gunn who does a power of work, do a great job of servicing our netball competitions each week. The number of reports and total weeks of suspension dropped significantly in 2017, which is a very positive outcome. We thank our Tribunal, led by Greg Black & Craig West, who are valued members of our sporting community and I would like to personally thank them and all the Tribunal members for their dedication and commitment throughout the season.
Our football and netball coverage both through Radio and Valley Vision provide our supporters with extensive coverage each week. Our broadcast team of Leo Groenewegen, Angus Boyle and Mitch Wynd have again delivered a radio broadcast of immense value every Saturday (and every Saturday & Sunday during finals). Leo, despite moving down to the Peninsula, continues to deliver broadcasts of great passion that has never once faded. Thank you to Yarra Valley FM who continue to support our radio broadcast each week. A major focus in 2017 was to increase and improve our media exposure to the broader community through social media platforms. Our use of platforms such as Facebook, live scores,
Team App and twitter will continue to develop as a key source of information sharing. 2018 will also see the introduction of our new website.
Thank you to our Senior and Netball Committees of Management, who continue to support our senior competitions across all key events, in particular finals. We thank the Senior COM of Mick Hill, Mike Fleming, Bill Heppell, Jodi Chandler, Bill Kuys, Shane Smith, Judy Orren and Leo Groenewegen and the Netball COM of Matt Blanchard, Anita Wood, Kate Upton, Michelle Young, Caz Gunn and Jodi Chandler.
The commission have been outstanding supporters of football and netball in the region and both my staff and I. Tony Mitchell, as Chairman leads the Commission with passion and has the growth and sustainability of the league at the forefront of his mind always. Mick Hill’s work with competition by-laws and policies, Leo’s work across our media platforms and Kelly Stokes’ work with Child Safety Standards have been instrumental this year. Thank you to outgoing Commissioners Karen De Villiers, Andy Gibbons and Doug Evans for the work they have done for the commission and the region. We welcome the introduction of new Commissioners Shane Smith and Mark Sargent in 2018. Both men are long serving volunteers throughout the region who are passionate about the Yarra Ranges and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the commission.
The AFL Yarra Ranges staff has done an outstanding job in 2017. Though a small team, they provide support enormously to football and netball in the region. Cameron and Gayle continue to go above and beyond for the clubs and volunteers across the region. Both are passionate about sport in the Yarra Ranges and I thank them for their innovation, commitment and support this year. Dean Rice, after five years with the league, has moved on to AFL South East. Dean has contributed significantly to football in the region with the work he has done in coach and club development and female football.
As part of our commitment to providing club support we are introducing some new and extra staff for 2018. I would like to welcome the following members to their positions. Jessie Mulholland – Female Talent & Competitions Coordinator. Andy Gibbons – Junior Competition Coordinator. Zak Kennedy – Operations Coordinator. Danny Ryan - As our regions new FDM. Gayle Seeger will also have additional Netball responsibilities for the coming season.
In 2018, significant investment will be made into developing the vision for football and netball in the region. Building on the stability achieved in 2017, we will look to work with all stakeholders to set both our strategic direction and vision. A full review is underway for football and netball in the region. This review aims to develop, design and recommend a model for the future of all competitions in the region, ensuring long term sustainability and viability for all affiliated clubs. This, coupled with the development of the Commissions Strategic plan 2019-2023, we will look to ensure the stainability and viability of the current competitions in the AFL Yarra Ranges Commission.
Aaron Bailey Region General Manager – AFL Yarra Ranges
I’m pleased to report another successful season both on and off the field in 2017 where our growth in both junior, woman’s/ girls football and netball has been very promising, and we expect this trend to continue.
AFL Yarra Ranges continues to grow, and I would like to acknowledge the great work being undertaken by our office staff under the management of Aaron Bailey Region General Manager, Football Development Manager Dean Rice, Football Operations Manager Cameron Hutchison, and Accounts Administrator Gayle Seeger.
I’d like to make a special tribute to Dean Rice who is moving on from our region in 2018. Dean, through his work has seen a huge increase in Auskick numbers and School programs in the Yarra Ranges, along with the growth of Female Football in his 5 years with us. Thank you for all your efforts and we wish all the best in your future endeavours.
The continued support and transparency of all our affiliated clubs and club officials this season has been appreciated by both the staff and commissioners.
I’d like to thank all of the Senior Clubs for their input and reports relating to our salary cap and allocated points. Again, these reports are critical to ensure the long-term sustainability of our senior football competition. Each club’s requirements will continue to be assessed and monitored on a case by case basis with our sub-committee.
AFL Yarra Ranges formed a sub-committee in 2015 to assess and overview both the player point system and the future salary cap requirements and these include Shane Smith, Mick Hill, Aaron Bailey, and Cameron Hutchison with my involvement at region level. This process will be on-going, and the sub- committee will continue to monitor the progress of surrounding leagues and the potential effect they have on ours, critical role of this group.
Our Premier League ranking, took a massive step forward with our senior inter-league status going to 12th overall after a healthy win over our rivals Gippsland Football League.
I’d like to thank our inter-league representatives, clubs, and committees for their support yet again for 2017 sides. We again achieved a great result under the guidance of Danny Ryan, Mick McGrath, Chris Goodlet, Tim Wragg and Daniel Collins at senior level and Brett Fisher and his team at Under 18 level. I’d like to also thank Daren Pryor and his dedicated junior interleague coaches on achieving some fantastic results again this season. I cannot stress the importance of junior development in our region to create opportunities for our youth to progress to talent pathways.
We will be reviewing and adjusting our strategic priorities over the coming months to further expand on our existing regional strategic plan for 2016-2018 and implement a new plan during 2018 for the future of our competitions, inclusive of woman’s/ girls, junior and senior football priorities as well as our valued netball competitions.
Other reviews of our football structure will continue during 2018 and this will include an overall review of our football and netball competitions, assessing the long-term viability of all our affiliated clubs. Open and honest dialogue is encouraged to ensure we provide each club with a long-term future in our game.
I would like to thank my fellow commissioners for their support, ideas, great debates and most importantly the continued commitment they have given me and our region by ensuring our football and netball continues to grow.
Many thanks to my past Deputy Chair Doug Evans, commissioners, Rob Allen, Karen De Villiers, Mick Hill, Leo Groenewegen, Andy Gibbons and Kelly Stokes for their work and great support this year. Both Doug Evans and Karen De Villiers have decided to stand down due to work commitments I would like to thank them for the support they have both given me, the commission, and AFL Yarra Ranges. Both Doug and Karen’s positions have been filled by Mark Sargent and Shane Smith, two experienced and well respected past commissioners.
I’d like to express my thanks, to both the Senior and Junior Committees for their continued support and efforts, we will be looking to revamp both committees to ensure we provide our member clubs with continued valued support with the most effective structure. At present, we feel there is some confusion with the present structure and we will streamline the chain of command over the coming months.
Thank you to our umpire’s in both junior and senior levels. I would like to pass on my special thanks to John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Trevor McGary, Bob Allen, Brendan McKenna, Warwick Marsh, Peter Dixon, James Nolan, Andrew Eggington, Leigh Walters, Harry Marsh, Les King, and Bryan Sultana is their commitment to bettering our umpiring this past season.
To our office interns Kyle Povah and Zak Kennedy, I truly appreciate the support you given our football and netball competitions and, Aaron with your ideas and support.
I’d like to pass on a special thanks to Aaron Bailey for the support and direction he has given the commission, his ideas and commitment to our competitions is first class and I thank him immensely.
To both Cameron and Gayle well done on supporting Aaron and developing as great individuals and the support you have both Aaron and the commissioners, great work and truly appreciated.
To our affiliate members, club volunteers, coaches, players, and officials, thank you for the many hours of tireless work you commit into our great games year in year out. I’m looking forward working with you all in 2018 and beyond.
Tony (Knobby) Mitchell
AFL Yarra Ranges Chair
The 2017 season was overall a very good year, with all club administrators once again giving their all for their clubs. Players and Parents adjusted fairly well to the new Registration process. With this system to continue into the future it needs to be adhered too. Clubs are aware that ALL players/parents are required to register as themselves for Footy & Netball so they have acknowledged the risks of playing the sport.
The industry we are in is an ever changing environment, which brings with it continuous challenges for our competitions & club officials alike. Working together through these challenges with an open mind is the best way to achieve productive results. When it comes to the Rules & Regulations we will only be flexible if the rules allow within reason. The integrity of the competitions requires us to implement the rules strictly when required to do so. We ensure every team/club is treated equally in this regard.
We are here to help you through any issues you may come up against as that is our role. Please feel free to contact us for support. You may be new to a role within your club or been there a long time. You will come up against something new from time to time but the likely hood is that one of us has or knows someone who has been through the situation before and can provide guidance.
2017 was a great year for our representative sides in the Yarra Ranges, led by our Senior team whom have moved themselves upto 11th in the State & 8th in the Country rankings. Our U13 team had a great year taking out the South East Championship. Our 17&U Netball team improved on 2016’s results and the Open team just missed out on Finals action in their return to Association Championships. We will see a change to the Junior Interleague system in 2018 with the introduction of the Hawthorn Next Gen Academy & our U14 and U15’s moving to the Metro Champs instead of V/Line. Thank you to all our Coaches, Team Managers, Runners, Time Keepers & Trainers in 2017 and special thanks from me to Daren Pryor, Peter Mathieson, Rachelle Credlin and Kylie Oultram who provided me with great assistance with the Interleague programs.
Junior Fixturing has been one of our biggest challenges since the introduction of the ERGFL. Unfortunately it’s a necessary evil and a problem we would rather face given the growth of the game is a major focus and priority of all commissions. 2018 is once again looking like this will continue to be a difficult task already with heavy growth in team numbers again. However with a more settled staff structure and a dedicated employee in this space for 2018 we are confident of alleviating the majority of last year’s issues.
Our Media channels experienced multiple changes in 2017. The forced change to the Livescoring platform was handled perfectly by the clubs at short notice and I thank them for this as we work toward improving that product for 2018. A very big thank you to our Match Day Media team, lead by Leo with the help of Angus, Mitch & Jason, who in conjunction with Valley Vision & YVFM 99.1 continue to bring us great live local action. Thank you to Jay, Kyle, Daine & Zak who provided assistance in various media roles throughout the year. Team App will be more widely used in 2018 and I hope to have a new website platform up and running prior to the beginning of the 2018 season. It will be one which is more ‘Mobile Device’ friendly. Welcome and thanks to Bethany for taking on the role of Senior Comp Photographer, I enjoyed seeing all the action
from the weekend’s games and plan to make these pictures more widely available in 2018. Thank you also to Kieko, Wazza & Judy for their efforts in providing the weekly record articles and to Colleen for putting it all together for us. Finally thanks to Rodney Ball, Liam Barnard & Effie Caloutas for putting together the Friday Night Footy show on YVFM, who along with Kieko were recognised by AFL Victoria as finalists for the 2017 Media Awards.
2017 was the second season of the State wide PPS and the majority of our clubs now have a good grasp on the system, with just a couple of areas catching some out along the way. Clubs need to make sure they stress to new recruits how important it is for them to give their new club accurate information on their previous years club B&F finishing position. This along with clubs making themselves more aware of the Additional Penalty Player Points section & the definitions of a Transferred Junior will find them with fewer issues in 2018. 2017 also saw the introductory year of the Salary Cap in Senior Football. The deadlines for submitting the relevant paperwork will be tighter moving forward and any flexibility we may have had in this area will no longer be there.
Some of the 2017 season highlights for me were:
• The growth in Girls teams
• Yarra Junction & Mt Evelyn’s inaugural Women’s teams
• Yarra Junction’s Auskick to U9’s in 2018
• Upwey Tecoma & Woori Yallock’s 1000th games
• Senior Interleague’s, 120 point turn around victory Vs Gippsland
• The U13’s winning the South East Junior Carnival
• The 17&U and Open Netball teams performances at the state association championships
• Junior & Senior Presentation Nights
• The inaugural Indigenous game – Woori V Healesville
• The enormous community fundraising efforts by our clubs
• Thornton Eildon’s first A grade win in over 2 years
• All 6 Belgrave senior teams competing on Grand Final Day
• 1st ever Veterans Night Grand Final
• Kinglake’s First ever Netball Premiership
• Olinda Ferny Creek’s First Div 1 Premiership
And my biggest highlight
• Mt Evelyn & Healesville’s tied U14 Premiership.
I’m already excited by how 2018 is shaping up and by what the future might bring to our competitions.
To John, Trevor & Brendan whom I speak to weekly if not daily during the season, your work with our Umpiring groups is enormous and our younger batch of Umpires combined with the experienced heads hold us in great stead for the future. Well done and thank you for all you do in this space.
Caz Gunn, Thank you for another great year and organisation of our Netball Pool Umpires. It’s a huge credit to you and your ability to manage people the way you can deliver quality pool Umpires across all our A & B Grade matches each week.
To Greg, Craig, Bill & Bob, without your dedication to our judicial tribunal system we wouldn’t have one at all. I thank you very much for all your efforts and making the set-up and organisation of the Tribunal hearings as easy for me as possible. Nothing I ask is ever too much trouble and I truly appreciate that.
Thank you to Aaron, Gayle & Dean along with our interns, Jay & Mitch and our student placements Zak, Kyle, Georgia & Angus who help make the AFL Yarra Ranges Office a pleasure to come to everyday (well nearly everyday). It truly is a great privilege to be able to do this role with the support of you all. Including our Commission, Committees of Management (Junior & Senior) and the Netball advisory Committee, together you all provide great guidance and support as volunteers for the service we can provide to our community clubs.
In closing I’d like to thank all the Club Officials, especially all the Presidents & Secretaries whom I converse with the most
throughout any given year. We don’t always have to agree on everything but as long as we all have the best interests of the competitions at heart we will achieve the desired results. Finally, thank you to my wonderful wife Tegan and supportive family for allowing me to do something I love doing every day, even if it means I don’t see you much in the winter months.
Regards, Cameron Hutchison Operations Manager –
AFL Yarra Ranges
At the time of writing this report I was given some extremely sad news.
Our friend and colleague Shayne Collette (Crazy), passed away on Friday 1st December.
Crazy was President of the Woori Yallock Junior Football Club for 7 years, a role that he gave up to join the Junior Com when we needed good people to help us out. He was a member of the Junior Com for 2 years and provided a no nonsense approach to any decisions that had to be made.
Crazy was also a dedicated volunteer in our Interleague program, where he mostly took up the position of runner during the years his son Jack was involved. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Rest in Peace mate, you will be sadly missed. Season 2017 saw the Junior League go back to our traditional age group structure and because of this the season ran a lot smoother, though we did have our challenges during the season. One being the fixture which was mainly due to the fantastic growth in the Easter Region Girls competition. Our AFL Ranges Operation Manager Cam Hutchison did an amazing job sorting out and re doing our fixture weekly. Thank you Cam for all of your efforts, it is an extremely hard job dealing with 3 Leagues and trying to keep all our clubs happy at the same time.
We also welcomed our new RGM Aaron Bailey; Aaron came to our League with a wealth of knowledge and proved himself to be a wonderful acquisition for our league. During the season Aaron worked towards a more professional look for our Juniors but also embraced the community feel our region is well known for. Thank you Aaron for all of your help this year.
Thank you to Gayle Seeger our office administrator for all her help and work organising all of our finances and setting up all of our finals gates.
Thank you to Zak, Kyle and all of the interns for all of their help this year.
Our FDM Dean Rice has moved on, Thank you Dean for all of your effort with our Auskick and the development of the game throughout our Region over the last 5 years.
As with all clubs you cannot run a footy club without good people on your committee and the same goes for the league as well. Our 2017 AFL Yarra Ranges Junior Committee of Management had excellent people on board.
Kelly Stokes who was also a member of the AFL Commission. Thank you Kelly for your time and effort this year.
Daren Pryor who has put his heart and soul into not only the Junior League but has been the driving force behind our Development Squad. Thank you Daren for your countless hours watching Junior footy in our region for the betterment of all the players. Enjoy your Sundays off and once again thank you for everything you have done for our Junior League over many years.
Ray Fellows whose knowledge of Junior and Senior Football in our Region has been gained from years of experience. Thank you Ray.
Nan Cleven who also has been involved at both club and league for many years. Thank you Nan for your measured approach in helping with any queries this season.
Shayne Collette who put his hand up to help out when we needed experience football minded people to join the committee. Thank you Shayne for all of your help this year.
Maxine Armstrong who joined us this year and was a great help with the running of the season. Thank you Maxine.
Thank you to Chairman Tony Mitchell and the AFL Yarra Ranges Commission for working with us to produce a community Junior Football competition that we are all proud of.
Thank you to AFL Yarra Ranges Development Academy Committee for all of their hard work guiding our talented players on the right path to achieving their goals in footy.
To our Umpire coaches and mentors, Brendan McKenna, Warwick Marsh and Andrew Egginton, you all did a great job organising and teaching our young umpire group this year. Our umpiring standards have improved greatly over the past 2 years, but everyone needs to take ownership over the way our games are controlled, this includes coaches, players and spectators.
Thank you to all our Clubs and their committees for continuing to provide a safe and enjoyable place for our children to enjoy footy. To all our volunteers you are what makes our league special, your willingness to put up your hands to help out and offer a friendly face around the clubs are immeasurable. I look forward to working with you all next year in a bit of a different role. Have a safe and enjoyable break.
Thanks

In 2017, we reported a trading profit before depreciation of $12,268. With depreciation, we recorded a small loss of $8,916. This is a significant improvement from 2016, with the league improving its position by $42,625. It is important that we have the league recording a profit from 2018, allowing us to ensure the leagues stability and in the long term enable us to assist, support and invest in our clubs. It was vital that we begin 2018 with a clean slate, removing all outstanding debts and implementing strong processes and safe guards. A key step in this was identifying an auditor that can assist us in achieving this. Securing the services of McLean, Delmo & Bentley, who have extensive experience working with sporting organisations, was a key appointment for the league.
They were able to identify expenses ($15,621) from 2016, paid in the Fiscal Year 2017, that had not been identified in our previous audit. Two one off debts also affected our bottom line in 2017. $6027.73 was written off for a long-standing debt with a previous sponsor, whilst $6102.55 was paid to Lawyers following successful defence of legal action over the previous lease in Woori Yallock. That we were able to still record a trading profit, despite expenses from pre-2017 of nearly $28,000, indicates we are implementing strong platforms for the 2018 fiscal year and beyond.
Sponsorship improved markedly in 2017, increasing by $31,788.35. We have also increased in kind sponsorship by $35,000 in 2017. We will see the benefit of these sponsorships in 2018, when we save significant money on areas such as functions, signage, apparel and events. Importantly, we have secured long term sponsorship deals until 2019 and 2020, which allows us to make long term financial decisions such as the implementation of more staff in 2018.
Revenue from supplier sales increased slightly in 2017, in both senior and junior clubs. Greater support from clubs is required to ensure we can keep affiliation costs and fees down. Over the past two years we have implemented a rebate structure for clubs who support the league. This year only seven of thirty-four clubs eligible for the program achieved this, which is an extremely poor result and unless rectified, will need to be addressed through other financial measures. We understand the financial pressure our clubs face and we will continue to endeavour to maintain low affiliation fees and charges as much as possible. However, this will not come at the expense of the sustainability and viability of the competition. It is vital that our clubs, where feasible, support the league and its corporate partners.
Finals revenue fell significantly, down $35,000 on the previous year. This can be contributed to many factors including unseasonable weather, Richmond’s success in the AFL, neighbouring finals and a small variety of competing clubs in 2017. We will continue to look at the best model for our finals series to ensure this major revenue stream continues to grow. Significantly, we have been able to improve our financial position when recording our worst finals performance of the past five years. We are working towards a model where finals revenue is not relied upon to achieve profits each year.
* = Not Eligable for the Rebate in 2017.
$27,195 $26,069
The accompanying notes form part of these financial statements.
Interleague 2017 saw us take on the Gippsland Football League at the Woori Yallock Football ground on 13th May. Without a doubt the biggest game ever played in our region. After 2 previous attempts to bet Gippsland we finally had a realistic opportunity to compete with them this year, reasons being the commitment not only shown by our best players but the community as a whole, the clubs, our league and sponsors who helped support the program.
I believe it highlights the importance of Interleague football for the growth and development of our region. We had a number of young players make their debut at senior interleague in Hayden Smith, Jake Matthews (Woori Yallock), Jack Nolan (Seville), Charlie Warren, Mick Anson, Jason Savage (Healesville) as-well as some experience players in our league in Brad Harvey, Robbie Ross (Wandin), Nathan O’Keefe (Seville) and Casey Adams (Healesville).
There are many people that have put in a power of work to make our Interleague program successful and I would like to thank them all for their efforts. Our coaching staff Brett Fisher under 18’s coach, Chris Goodlet Sen. Assistant, Tim Wragg Sen. Assistant, Brendan Donavan Sen. Assistant, Michael McGrath Sen. Assistant, Jim Martin 18’s assistant, Dean Toohey 18’s assistant, Shane Smith Chairman of selectors, along with all the trainers and once again the players and their clubs for all they have done in the support of our Interleague program.
We know look forward to our new big challenge taking a local rival in the South East Football Netball League in 2018.
Danny Ryan 2017 Senior Interleague Coach.

Once again our league played some great football and to have the under 13 squad win the carnival, if was a bonus. Our coaches showed why they are highly regarded, by educating our players in all aspects of football for now and for the future.
Massive thank you to all our coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, runners, water carriers, trainers and all parents who made the effort to bring our wonderful players to training and to the games.
As chairman of the interleague and development academy, I was extremely proud of our players in the manner in which they played and the sportsmanship they showed. All players are a credit to their clubs and especially, their parents.
Regards
Daren Pryor
All in all, season 2017 saw a vast improvement in player behaviour, especially in regards to the amount of reports for abusive language directed towards our umpires. Yellow Cards were down by 10%, Reports fell by 14, which had a marked effect on total week’s suspension and they were down by 38. Approximately one report per 11 games and 1 yellow card on average every 3 games. Some clubs who find themselves continually on the wrong end in these discipline areas should be looking at ways to improve. However, player behaviour is always a focus and the League will continually look for improvements in both the amount of players yellow carded and reported. A summary of reports in 2017 include:
• 20 for “Striking”
• 1 for “Attempted Striking”
• 1 for “Kicking”
• 3 for “Engaging in rough conduct”
• 0 for “Front on contact”
• 3 for “Using abusive, insulting or threatening language towards an Umpire”
• 3 for “Using abusive Language”
• 0 for “Tripping another person”
• 3 for “Any act of misconduct”
• 1 for “Head butting”
• 1 for “Other Incidents”
With 400 games played, we averaged one report for every 11 games played.

It is with great pleasure that I can report another extremely successful 2017 season for the YRU group. We again played our part in the in the ongoing success and growth of the AFL Yarra Ranges senior and junior football competitions, providing full panels in all senior games, extra boundary umpires in reserve games and junior umpires to fill the extra girls matches in conjunction with the EFL umpires. The enormous growth of the senior womens and girls competitions has put a huge strain on our resources to fill all the appointments, and moving forward will create further challenges to cover all the games.
We were again fortunate to have the services of Brendan McKenna, Warwick Marsh, Andrew Egginton and other senior umpires to coach, mentor and guide our junior umpires this season, and I would like to thank you for the fantastic job you have done in guiding these young men and women in their umpiring futures.
Thank you to the senior board members in John Edwards, Steve Edwards, Bob Allen, James Nolan and Tony Cross for their professional attitude in fulfilling their respective roles and supporting myself. Our trainer Chris Abrahams did a fantastic job every Wednesday night and during the finals in providing treatment and professional to umpires who required whatever was needed in their rehabilitation or ongoing workload.
Through the V/Line Academy we had our umpires appointed to interleague football this season, and we thank Russell O’Toole for this opportunity and for his work in setting up the Worowa College Academy with the support of Bob Allen. The academy is now in the 2nd year and provides the students with a great insight into umpiring, which will hopefully see some of the students join the group in the coming years.
Congratulations to the following senior and junior umpires who received these special awards after outstanding seasons –

Best Goal Umpire Josh Horsten
Best Finals Umpire Lindsay Skipworth
