Powelltown off to great start Lachlan Shaw

The Match of the Round football contest between Yarra Junction and Powelltown was an enthralling way to kickstart the 2022 season, with the Demons claiming a narrow sevenpoint victory to claim the Jeff Cole Shield. The two sides were locked in combat for the entire match with the Eagles leading at every break, before the visitors stood up with a bit more polish in the final quarter to come away with the win, courtesy of a match-winning goal from the boundary line by Dean Roy. With the Demons finishing on 16 goals for the match, Roy was the leading goal kicker with six, while full-forward Michael Fowkes had five, Russell Cowan with two and singles to Matthew Lord, Josh Taylor and Jason Walker. Recovering from a quad issue and

instructing his players from the boundary line instead, playing coach Jarrod Bayliss was pleased with the performance of his side and is proud of the fact they found a way to win in tough conditions. “Our opposition got the jump on us early and we probably took a while to settle into the contest,” he said. “The Eagles were right on top of us through the middle of the ground, but there were moments in the game where the quality of our players really shone through and they found a way to win. “It’s nice for the club to claim the trophy this year, but it’s Round One, we ticked the box and got the points, but we have a lot to work on moving forward.” The cost of the tight, gripping contest began to show its hand as the game

wore on, with a suspected ACL injury to Rhys Chapman and Barry McDonald hurting his achillies. Lucky for the Demons, they have enough depth in its reserves side to fill the void left by the injuries of two of the most important figures in the side and now look to the remainder of the year where they will be one of the leading contenders in Division Two. While Bayliss acknowledged that early wins are important, he is particularly appreciative of the fact his side were able to respond when challenged and found a way to win. “The win has enabled us to develop some early confidence, but we are now looking to continue building as a group,” he said. “We now look forward to our next challenge against Warburton Millgrove this weekend and playing at home.

One Week at a Time

Lachlan Shaw

What a fantastic sight it was to see Round One finally get underway after two years of heartache in not being able to complete full seasons of community sport. We had some great, enthralling results across the competition, with the clear highlight being the match of the round events between Yarra Junction and Powelltown. Locked in combat for the entire match with neither able to get a break from the other, the football match was a magnificent contest to watch as the local rivals went hard at each other for bragging rights over the other come the end of the match, all the elements of what makes sport across the Yarra Valley so enjoyable to watch. In the end, it was Powelltown who grabbed the win and took home the Jeff Cole Shield, courtesy of a matchwinning goal to Dean Roy. Roy’s six goal performance throughout the afternoon was enough for him to be awarded with best on ground honours. The tense but exciting atmosphere was also reflected on the netball court, as the Eagles and Demons fought it out in a tight contest with neither able to gain a good break from the other.

The superb, consistent efforts and a willingness to fight back from both sides meant a draw left a sour taste in the mouths of those who took part, but it was nonetheless a fitting way for the contest to finish after a good hard slog between two quality teams. Across the remainder of the competition, Narre Warren and Pakenham commenced its 2022 programs a whole weekend early from its premier division opponents, with the Magpies getting the wins across both football and netball in front of supporters and partners who were present for its season launch event running alongside games. With Healesville continuing to persist with a young side who won’t give in to its opposition, its tough and rewarding pre-season training program under the watchful eye of new coach Dean De Munk paid off greatly as they took a 37-point victory over Berwick Springs who they went up against for the first time. The Bloods appear to be smokey contenders throughout the year in Division One and will now have the task of trying to maintain the motivation and fitness levels of its young side, particularly when they take it up to the experienced teams in Seville and Gembrook Cockatoo later in the year.

It was roles reversed on the netball courts, as the Titans grabbed a first up win against the Bloods to start its 2022 campaign. Other standout results that took place across the region for the first weekend of community sport included a good win in senior football to Warburton Millgrove over Alexandra, following a good off-season of strong recruitment. Despite a couple of forfeits, it was also really good to see our women’s football competition get underway with Pakenham, Belgrave and Olinda Ferny Creek getting the wins over their opponents. This weekend, the competition will be in full swing as the remainder of Round One premier division fixtures occur, in addition to the commencement of the veterans division where we are proud to welcome Phillip Island, Devon Meadows and Neerim Neerim South to join existing opponents Mount Evelyn, Gembrook Cockatoo, Narre Warren, Healesville and Tooradin Dalmore. Getting all the members of our region back doing what they love has been rewarding to see following the hard work of many and we look forward to seeing more of our clubs and participants start their 2022 campaigns this weekend.

Premier Division Football Week One Review A brilliant match took place on the field of Kalora Park on Saturday night, with bragging rights going the way of Narre Warren for the opening Premier Division match against Pakenham. Taking only a two-point lead into quarter time, the Magpies took control from there and gradually extended its lead throughout the match before running out as 36-point winners. Jesse Davies and new recruit Jarrod Smith kicked three goals each for the Magpies while Peter Gentile, Kurt Mutimer, Riley Siwes, Hayden Stagg and Josh Tonna starred as its best players. Week Two Preview Olinda Ferny Creek and Woori Yallock will play off in the Match of the Round honours this weekend, as both sides look to get its seasons off to a good start. Brendan Donovan and Kelsey Currie will return as coach and captain for the Bloods and following seven games in 2021 where they scored four wins, the club will look to go one step further in season 2022 as they aim to be a leading contender with the best in premier division. Jack Cole and Kody Busoli return as coach and captain at Woori Yallock and following a busy off-season where they recruited some great talent, will also look to go one step further on its efforts of last season. Officer and Upwey Tecoma will face off for the first time in its history this weekend, with the match at Starling Road to set the scene for the season ahead for both clubs. With the Kangaroos stepping up into premier division for the first time, they have recruited well over the off-season to give themselves

the best possible start and claim some success this weekend as they take on new opposition. Similarly, Stuart Hill makes his return as playing coach for the Tigers and aim to improve on its seventh-place finish last season and test themselves against new opposition to gauge where they are at in the early stages of the season. Wandin and Mount Evelyn will reignite their long and storied rivalry this weekend, with the Rovers step up into premier division and the scheduled matches placement on a Sunday allowing the game to have clear air from others. Following an off-season of strong training and recruitment, the Bulldogs are now well placed to be genuine contenders in season 2022 and will look to get its season off to a positive start against its local rivals this weekend. Mount Evelyn, on the other hand, will embrace the challenge of premier division and will hope to knock over its rivals when they face off this weekend.

Premier Division Netball Week One Review Erin Bell’s team of A grade netballers got its season off to a great start on Saturday afternoon, taking a 20-point win over Pakenham Lions at Kalora Park. Bell scored 26 goals for the side she leads, with Jemma Osborne and Chelsea Tonna also chipping in on the scoreboard. Gabrielle O’Dwyer and Maddie Maund also starred as the best players for the Tigers. In her first game at A grade level, Victorian State 17 & Under representative Eliza Molinio played well for the Lions, shooting five goals. Week Two Preview Olinda Ferny Creek will aim to continue on its strong netball program over the last few years and go after more success in season 2022, when they take on Woori Yallock on its home court this weekend. Brie DeJong will move into the role as A grade coach, taking over from Tim Smith who has been promoted to the position of Netball Coordinator at the Bloods. The Tigers will also go into the new season with new coaches with Mia Sudomirski and Alana McGurgan taking the reins from Sarah Hogan. With ROC stepping into premier division for the first time alongside its football affiliate in Officer, the Kangaroos will also look to capitalise on its run of success from last year when they take on some new opposition in season 2022, with Upwey Tecoma being the first of its new opponents. Simon O’Shanassy returns as A grade coach, but reigning Division One A grade best & fairest winner Sam Neil takes the reins as captain, following the departure of Zoe Callanan. Under the tuition of David Hare, Upwey Tecoma will be aiming to improve on its efforts of last

year, in starting off with a competitive performance against the Kangaroos this weekend that sets them up for the rest of the season. Just as it is with the football sides, Wandin and Mount Evelyn will reignite its rivalry on the netball court they face off at Wandin North Recreation Reserve. Ruby Tidd returns as A grade coach, while Kaitlyn Black will combine her playing commitments by again steering the ship for the Rovers in the A Grade department. Beaconsfield Netball Club return for another year, beginning its campaign against Monbulk who make the step up to premier division for the first time. With reigning B grade best & fairest winner Jordan Lang stepping up into the A grade line-up, the Eagles will be hoping to capitalise on its third place finish last season and continue its strong form this year. Under the guidance of coach Christina Puopolo, Monbulk will be aiming to put its best foot forward for its first game this week as they look towards a year of development in the netball department.

THE BEST OF THE WEEKEND

Division One Football Week One Review Healesville got its season off to a great start in Dean De Munk’s first game in charge, with a 37-point win over Berwick Springs. The Bloods of Don Road had control of the match right from the start, kicking four goals to none in the first quarter and were never headed as the game wore on. Young gun Max Donegan starred with three goals while Daniel Ebbels, Campbell Frazzetto, Lochie Oliver, Zachary Fawdry, Will Kristelly-Kelety and Sam Gebert also starred as the best players on the day for the winners while Josh Herkess kicked three for the Titans. Emerald had a big win to start its season 2022 campaign, with a 76-point victory over Yarra Glen in its first match since its step up to Division One. Jordan Donadel and Callum White kicked three each for the Bombers as they continued to build its big lead as the match wore on. Harry Lang, Jordan Donadel, Jake Pedder, Dale Karacsonyi, Lachlan Collihole and Ethan Grose featured prominently throughout the day as Emeralds best player, while the River Pigs now have a bit to think about leading into its match this week. Week Two Preview Following its loss to Emerald last week, Yarra Glen will be looking towards putting in a better performance this weekend when they take on Healesville on its home turf. Still reeling from the loss of its captain Ben Ashton to an injury only two weeks out from the season’s commencement, the River Pigs will be sure to try their hearts out this week when they come up against the Bloods whose group of young kids put in a superb performance last weekend in its defeat of Berwick Springs. The Bloods appear to be in a prime position to make it two in a row, but there’s no doubt the River Pigs will do all they can to make it hard for Bloods. Old rivals Belgrave and Gembrook Cockatoo will face off at Belgrave Recreation Reserve, with Darren Hamilton’s Magpies to have another go this weekend against the Brookers as they

After sitting out of a coaching role for more than five years, Chris Murphy got a first up win in his first game in charge of Seville, defeating Belgrave by 123-points at home. Playing on the junior ground this year, due to ongoing works to the main field at the Seville Recreation Reserve, the Blues were dominant right from the start and have built a great percentage boost to place themselves on top of the ladder following Round One, giving new Belgrave coach Darren Hamilton plenty to think about for the Magpies’ next game. Rob Petracca, Domenic Aloi, Nathan O’Keefe, Andrew Condello and Jye Sciortino all kicked multiple goals which gave its supporter base plenty to celebrate.

continue in its development of the playing group. The footballers at Gembrook Cockatoo will launch its attack on season 2022, as they set its sights on a potential finals appearance come September. Brad Coller returns as senior coach, while Colin Bastow will take over from Damian Volta as captain. Playing host to Seville at Mick Morland Recreation Reserve, Berwick Springs will look to bounce back from a loss to Healesville last week by putting in a competitive performance against the Blues this week in front of its home crowd. Daniel Ousley will be sure to fire up the Titans this weekend, while Nathan O’Keefe’s Blues will hope to capitalise on the efforts of its big win last week by going back-to-back this weekend and maintaining its lead on top of the ladder.

Division One Netball Week One Review With coach Jessie Hare missing from the on-court line-up, Berwick Springs made up for the disappointment of its loss on the football field, with the A Grade team beating Healesville 36 to 21. Jess Hoskin and Chloe Maas were the goal shooters for the Titans while Laura Walker and Allana Hadley also stood out as its best players. Healesville tried hard to stay in the contest, but ultimately could not keep up with the Titans poise and skill work, with Jessica Giudice, Brooke Erickson and Issy Smith managing to get some goals in the net for the Bloods. In the first game for Michael Loulanting in charge of the A grade team at Emerald, the Bombers of Chandler Reserve grabbed a 53-to-36-point win over Yarra Glen in a good start to its season 2022 campaign. Kaylah Loulanting was a star with her goal shooting, scoring 39 goals while Matilda Preston and Suria Loulanting also chimed in with nine and five goals each. Stepping into the A Grade line-up after clinching the leading goal shooter award in B Grade last season, Stephanie Gibbs enjoyed a good start to season 2022 by scoring 28 goals for the River Pigs. Week Two Preview With both teams coming off a loss this weekend, Yarra Glen and Healesville will be fiercely determined to get their first wins on the board this weekend before the Easter break occurs. The River Pigs were competitive last week against Emerald, following their step up to Division One, but a win against Healesville on Saturday will get the monkey off the back and assist in developing some confidence as they progress throughout the season. Nicole Schoche’s Healesville side on the other hand, will aim to put in a competitive performance against its local rivals as they continue its pathway of development. Belgrave will enter its first home game of the season with great pride and excitement, as they play on its newly built netball courts for the first time. The Magpies, however, will come up against some good opposition for its first match on the beautiful new courts, as they take on Gembrook Cockatoo. With both sides going into the weekend having lost its matches last week to Seville and Berwick, this is shaping up to be an exciting contest between two competitive outfits.

Despite missing gun goal shooter Olivia Ray from its line-up, Seville still managed to capitalise on its strong program over pre-season training to beat Belgrave 53 to 29. In her place, Ella Dowling was the leading goal shooter with 32 goals and was well supported by Ella Morse and Carly McDonnell with 21 goals between them. Indiana Peacock and Emily Wicks also featured prominently as the best players for the Blues as they slot into second on the ladder. Playing on its home court at Edwin Flack Reserve, Berwick have claimed top spot on the ladder following the Round One games with its defeat of Gembrook Cockatoo on Saturday. Emma Clarke, Emily Pupuke and playing coach Chloe Phillips scored the goals for the Blues while Danielle Hanley and Kyla Quinn also stood out on the court to be named as their best players.

With both sides getting their 2022 campaigns off to a great start last weekend, Berwick Springs and Seville will be hoping to maintain the great momentum they built last week when they face off for the first time this weekend. Like the football squads, both sides will be eager to gain first bragging rights over the other when they step onto the netball court, which ensures this will be a gripping contest to watch. Another two sides going up against each other for the first time, Emerald will play host to Berwick on Saturday afternoon and will be sure to not let its rivals gain the ascendency over them early in the season. Michael Loulanting’s team of A grade players performed well against Yarra Glen last week and will hope to maintain the consistency into this week, while Chloe Phillips will do all she can to encourage her squad to get up over the home side.

Division Two Preview Week One Review The Match of the Round produced was a ripping contest with Yarra Junction and Powelltown going head-to-head for the Jeff Cole Shield, with the Demons coming away as sevenpoint winners thanks to a late snap from Dean Roy to seal the game. It was a tight affair throughout, with the Eagles in front at every break before Powelltown went up a gear in the final quarter kicking five goals to three. On his 31st birthday, Roy was recognised as the best on ground with six goals while Michael Fowkes and Russell Cowan kicked five and two goals each. Playing assistant coach David Johnson was the star for the Eagles with his five majors for the home side. Following a busy off-season of recruitment and training, Warburton Millgrove got its season off to a positive start with a Round One win against Alexandra on its home turf at Mac Sparke Oval. New recruits Jack Farrugia and Mitch Bonuda were Week Two Preview Powelltown and Warburton Millgrove will continue their rivalry on the football field this weekend, with both the Demons and the Burras hoping to develop further on its great wins over Yarra Junction and Alexandra last week and continue building its momentum on season 2022. Women’s Football Week One Review The game between Upwey Tecoma and Yarra Glen was a forfeit and no match took place. Under the leadership of new coach Rick Stalker and captain Chloe Nagel, Pakenham took a great win over Yarra Junction on Saturday morning by controlling the match right from the start and finishing as 35-point winners. The best players for the Lions were Bianca Moody, Donna Monckton, Natalie Holmes, Melina Eppel and Courtney Stephens while Jamee Cousens, Jess Laidlaw, Sarah Wilcox, Georgia Page, Emily Spicer and Sienna Mills were the Eagles’ best. Olinda Ferny Creek took a comprehensive win over Thornton Eildon on Saturday afternoon, taking a 61-point win as the away

side. The win places the Bloods in third on the ladder as they set themselves for the year ahead where they are well placed to be leaders in the women’s football competition. Belgrave are another women’s side who got its season off to a great start, with a dominant 95-point victory against Seville on Saturday afternoon. Christina Missos led the way for the Magpies with four goals while ably supported by Serenity Connolly, Nicole Baboucek and captain Danielle Weisgerber who shared seven goals between them. Jess Walker and Amy Anderson were the others who starred as the best players for the Magpies. The match between Healesville and Monbulk was a forfeit and no match took place.

Week One Preview Following its forfeit last weekend, Monbulk will hope to come out firing when they travel to play Thornton Eildon on Saturday afternoon. Under the guidance of Jessica Moseley, the Hawks will be determined to put the disappointment of not fielding a team last weekend behind them and come out firing against the might of the Shinboners. Likewise, the women of Thornton Recreation Reserve have put the disappointment of a loss to Olinda Ferny Creek behind them by putting in a performance that encourages the home crowd. Following a great win against Yarra Junction last week, Pakenham will reignite its rivalry on Saturday afternoon when they play Upwey Tecoma, who defeated them in a semi-final appearance last season. To ensure they don’t go down the same way as they did in the final last season, the Lions will be hoping to execute a different game plan this week so they can best avoid the experience of being on the end of a loss as they were last year. Upwey Tecoma, on the other hand, were unable to take the field last weekend due to a forfeit from Yarra Glen and will be keen to play.

Following a big win over Seville last week, Belgrave will go into its Saturday afternoon match against Yarra Junction with the goal to maintain its position in the top two on the ladder. Under the leadership of Julian Schill and Danielle Weisgerber, the Magpies will be looking to put its best foot forward against a new look Yarra Junction side who went down to Pakenham last week. After a late call up to play Thornton Eildon last week, Olinda Ferny Creek will be hoping to continue its great start to 2022 when they play Seville on its home turf in the late afternoon on Saturday. Simon Gilson’s team of enthusiastic footballers will again come out firing, while the Blues will be keen to look past the disappointment of a big loss to Belgrave last week by putting in their best efforts against the Bloods this week. Yarra Glen will be hoping to have fun and gain a lot of excitement on Saturday when they play local rivals Healesville on its home deck in the twilight of Saturday afternoon. Following its withdrawal for the game against Upwey Tecoma last week, the River Pigs will be keen to get its team up and on the park while Healesville will also aim to get its season underway following the forefeit of its opponent last week.
