Spray It or Balm It

There is a seemingly endless list of things essential oils can be used for. Some of the easier things are as simple as using a couple of drops as perfume or to add to an oil diffuser for aromatherapy. Other DIYs only require a few more steps, such as making a body scrub or cleaning products. There are so many different scents to choose from that help with a variety of things. Lavender is generally perceived to be a relaxing scent and is a common one to diffuse, tea tree oil is great for spot-treating acne, diluted peppermint oil can help ease headaches and nausea, and diluted eucalyptus oil can clear one’s sinuses, to name a few.

Now you may be wondering how to try out an essential oil or two, but never fear. Here are two simple DIYs to get you started:

Materials Needed: Small, fine mist spray bottle 4 ounces of water 15 drops of an essential oil 2 teaspoons of witch hazel (optional)

Make your own essential oil room/pillow spray:

Step 1: Gather all the ingredients. They can all be found at just about any in-person store or Amazon.

Step 2: Measure the 4 ounces of water and pour it into the spray bottle.

Step 3: Add 15 drops of the essential oil to the spray bottle. Depending on the strength of the essential oil chosen, though, less or more may be better. (Tip: start with a few drops and add until the smell is strong enough for your personal preference.)

Step 4: If you have witch hazel on hand or feel like purchasing it, measure 2 teaspoons of it and add to the spray bottle. (Tip: If witch hazel does not complement the chosen scent, do not worry about adding it! However, it is really great for skin, which is highly recommended if you intend to use the spray on your pillow.)

Step 5: Shake the bottle up to mix the liquid together. It may be best to give the bottle a shake before each use to ensure that it stays properly mixed.

Step 6: Enjoy a sound sleep with the help of this spray.

How to create a custom lip balm with essential oils:

Materials Needed: Small, microwave-safe bowl 1 tablespoon of shea butter or coconut oil 1 tablespoon of honey or castor oil for a vegan alternative 4-5 drops of an essential oil A small container for the finished balm

Step 3: Add in 4-5 drops of the essential oil, but feel free to add more or less based on personal preference. If you do not know what scent to choose, try peppermint, rose, or citrus. Stir until the three ingredients are well mixed.

Step 4: Before the liquid mixture is able to fully cool, pour it into a small container of choice. Something like an old lip balm tube, mint tin, or tiny jar would work great.

Step 5: Let it sit overnight to set. Step 1: Measure 1 tablespoon of either shea butter or coconut oil and place in the microwave-safe bowl. Heat the bowl in the microwave for 10 seconds and check on it. Lightly stir and continue heating for five seconds at a time until it is a smooth liquid. Let it cool for 2-3 minutes.

Step 2: Measure 1 tablespoon of honey and add it to the bowl.

Step 6: Enjoy your new lip balm.
