Outdoors lights up the weekend Arabian style Deedee El Jilani Staff Writer The greatest annual event AUB manages to pull off every year has happened again this last weekend! This year’s Outdoors was themed Arabian Nights with all of the Outdoors committee members dressed in blue genie pants and a colorful Aladdin-styled vest. As usual, the games and the food were prepared by AUB clubs who also decorated the inside of the stands the night before the event up until Saturday morning. There were little children with their parents in the morning followed by bands and rehearsed dances in the afternoon all ending with the blasting of speakers by AUB rock bands. This year however, there were many new events as compared to previous years. There was a djembe [Jembay] drumming show. The head of the group Ahmad Khouja said “we formed our group in the beginning of the year and we taught AUB students who were interested in drumming in West Hall. We played at the

Migrant Workers Parade and we have another gig this week. Djembe music is the core of West African music. The rhythms are nuanced and rich; it symbolizes community. Each rhythm has its own story. Some of us met when we were in Guinea for a recording project. It lets out energy.” Another addition was a Latin dance group called Backstage who performed a Latin-Oriental show on Sunday where they danced salsa, rumba, and jive. Two dances were performed to Arabic music to blend in with the theme. Other Outdoors members, Maher Malaeb and Ruba Arnaout had this to say about the new additions: “There are a lot of new things this year; the Champions League Final, Sushi, the kid’s area, and paintball.” On Saturday, they were showing the football game and lots of fans from both teams attended to watch the game, and on Sunday there was a singer Tim Hassall who entertained the crowd.

The Arabic MEEN also sang hilarious bits of music that sent the crowd holding back their tears with laughter. A few bands were hasty, though it is rock music, just to finish in the time slot provided to them because the schedule was delayed a few times.

USFC Vice President discusses long-term changes for student representatives Heather Jaber News Executive With the academic year at its end, USFC Vice President Mario Abou Zeid highlighted some of the achievements of the representatives thus far. The VP clarified hot-topic issues regarding the cafeteria pricing increase, but also touched on long-term improvements in both efficiency and objectives of the group. As the AUB community is well aware, the price increases in the cafeteria beginning on Monday, April 23 have lead to a frenzy of student protests and boycotts. In dealing with the issue, Abou Zeid said, “Our top priority was to lower the prices.” Tuesday, the day after clubs and societies contacted the USFC wanting to organize a sit-

in, the USFC discussed the matter with the administration. That same day, a group of students “violated the agreement” of an organized student sit-in. “It was a failed demonstration,” Abou Zeid said of the group, which reportedly included various non-AUB students. The group allegedly received verbal warnings. “As student representatives, it is our mission to represent these people [students]…without allowing anyone to take credit on behalf of others.” The next day, “clubs and societies raised the issue for the first time officially,” said Abou Zeid. On Thursday, the USFC met, with the cafeteria

issue as its main priority, and formed an adhoc committee comprised of USFC members, Drew Wickens (Director of Financial Planning and Auxiliary Services), Dr. Karma El Hassan (Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment), and Dr. Talal Nizameddin (Dean of Student Affairs). A survey was created and food quality, quantity, and hygiene issues were discussed. In the past two weeks, the USFC has obtained “answers and valid arguments.” During these meetings, according to Abou Zeid, it was found that there were complicated aspects to consider. “[The] main factor was the official raise of
