Surviving January By Brooke Cartus
...at the Gym
A lot of you readers may not know this, but before I was an attorney with way too many pants suits, I was actually a personal trainer, spinning instructor, and boxing coach. For five years, I spent my days listening to people tell me about their lives, loves, jobs, and breakfast choices while I made them sweat. I taught group classes, couples training, one-on-one training with all sorts of people: grandmothers looking to have the energy to run after their grandkids at the park, and Olympic level athletes looking to qualify one last time. I’ve trained NHL wives and 89 year-old judges (well, one judge in particular but we spent most of
the hour talking about his favorite operas.) I was a baby gay in windpants with a Justin Bieber haircut trying to make a difference. This time of the year always brings back memories, because for an employee at a gym, January is a literal hellscape of clumsy beginners clashing with semi-clumsy gym veterans (because everyone is a little clumsy at the gym.) I’m here to offer you some tips to help you get into shape and stay into shape this January as you enter the Hunger Gamesesque environment of the gym you have been paying for the last six months and have only to gone three times.
2
Remember… the gym doesn’t want you.
If everyone who signed up for a gym actually showed up 3x a week, the gym would be so overcrowded that you wouldn’t be able to move and would have to assign three people at a time to a treadmill. Gyms THRIVE on those who sign up, work out once, and walk out never to be heard from again. Sure, you casually drive by while picking up Indian take-out and say, “Oh, yea! I should cancel my membership.” But then you get home and eat your weight in rice and completely forget. Mmmm rice.
What you do at the gym doesnÊt really matter:
There’s some annoying phrase from some fitness person (that I don’t want to google) that says “a body is made in the kitchen, not the gym.” Whoever said that is really annoying and also right. I would constantly have clients who were not getting results and would explain that I only spent 2 hours a week with them, which is less than 2% of their week. Average 8 hours of sleep per week (yea right!) and that’s 110 hours of choices that I am not watching. And in those 110 hours, you know what happens? Chips. Candy. That stupid cake from your aunt. Pizza. Happy hour(s). If you are having a busy January and cannot stomach the thought of trying to deal with the chaos of a gym in January, try instead improving your food intake. That could mean a million things: cut back on snacks, or curtail the drinking, or change the type of carbohydrates you are eating from simple to complex (an easy example is white potato to sweet potato). You don’t have to live on kale... but you can if you want. I can’t
Some gyms even offer pizza parties and candy at the front desk… why? BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO GET FIT. Think of the gym as your aunt who always feeds you 18 servings of lasagna when you go to her place and then finishes it off with a “small” slice of cake that is actually the size of a human head. This is your chance to FIGHT back and beat the system. How? By actually going to the gym. Don’t eat the candy at the front desk either. It’s a trap.
3
Don’t worry about the gym vets. They are just salty.
I have been a regular gym-goer for almost a decade, and as a veteran of living through January at the gym as both an employee and a member, I can tell you that the gym veterans KNOW January is coming. They are going to be assholes, and they shouldn’t be. There will be a grunter. Or seven. You go in, you do you, and if there is a jerk hogging a machine, you should politely say, “Can I work in?” and alternate sets. Your instincts, even if you aren’t a gym freak, are probably on point: if you see someone screaming and yelling and breaking their back, they are probably actually hurting themselves and not caring about form and trying to impress people. Either that, or you stumbled into a BDSM club/gym. And if that’s the case, give me a call. Sounds like that is worth the 3-month free trial.

Good Things Come to Good Things Come to Good Things Come to Those Who Are Those Who Are Those Who Are
Megan Mullally Megan Mullally Megan Mullally
Will & Grace star on real-life lesbian advances, James Franco’s pubes and Karen Walker’s return
Tip one back for Megan Mullally, who’s making a move to the big screen in Why Him after a drove of indie roles, including gay-affirming mom Mrs.Van Camp in 2013’s G.B.F., and a variety of TV stints. But when it comes to the small screen, it’s the 58-year-old actress’s eight-year role on the groundbreaking late ’90s NBC sitcom Will & Grace, as quippy, martini-swigging socialite Karen Walker, that changed Mullally’s life as much as it changed ours.
So, honey, sit back and catch up on all things Mullally. She has a lot to say about that time a female coworker attempted to seduce her, crushing on “the gayest person in the world,” witnessing “100 percent” of James Franco’s butt crack and the likelihood of a Will & Grace reboot (spoiler alert: it’s very, very likely).
Chris Azzopardi: There are a lot of gays who’d like to chat with you, so I feel very lucky. Megan Mullally: I love it. You can say,
CA: Having you and James Franco in a movie together is basically a match made in gay heaven. He has quite the gay resume. MM: That’s funny. I never thought about
“Oh my god, she was really boring.”
that! But yeah, totally. CA:Why Him? centers on the awkward situation of bringing home someone your parents are likely to dislike. Have you ever brought a controversial boyfriend home to your parents? MM: My first boyfriend in college, Brad.
My father was an arch-conservative and Brad subscribed to the communist newspaper, so that was not cute. (Laughs) My father wasn’t too thrilled about Brad. CA: You’re saying he had a “why him?” moment? MM:Yeah… and then some.

CA: I guess you didn’t have a chance to compare your queer credentials. MM: No, but I’m familiar with straight
James, gay James, all of that. I mean, I know him. We got along very well, James and I. Maybe there was something in the air… the gays brought us together. CA: As someone I consider to be a guru of all things gay, were you able to determine what it is about James that appeals to the LGBT community? MM: I think because he kind of flirts with
them. (Laughs) I mean, he’s very cute. That doesn’t hurt.

CA: And in the movie, shirtless. MM: He’s also pantsless! His butt crack
was 100 percent showing – and, like, a little bit of pubes. CA: What was it like shooting those cenes? MM: Um, it wasn’t horrible. I was actu-
ally a little embarrassed when I walked on the set the first time and was like, “Oh my. Wow. OK.” (Sings Bing Crosby) “Getting to know youuuuu.” So yeah, that happened. CA:You were raised in Oklahoma City. Before you became immersed in the gay community through living in West Hollywood and starring on Will & Grace, what was your introduction to it? MM: Oh, that’s funny. A couple of things:
I did my first summer stock musical when I was 12. I also did another summer stock when I was 14, and I had the biggest crush on this guy named Tommy who was in the ensemble and played a small part. He was the cutest blonde boy in the world, and I just could not understand why he didn’t really pay very much attention to me. (Laughs) We were really good friends, always hanging out. But I was very naïve. Later I was like, “Ohh, wait. Totally the gayest person in the world.” Outlook Magazine
Around that same era, there was a woman who was also somehow involved in this summer stock. She was gay, and I used to go to her apartment and she would get me high. I remember one time I fell out of the chair, I got so high. I, like, hobbled over out of the chair, and she thought it was hilarious. So yeah, she was gay and I thought, “Gosh, she really likes me,” and it dawned on me that she probably thought I was pretty cute, but she never made a pass at me. Even later, when I was 20 or 21, I was doing this musical in Chicago. (Screenplay writer) Pat Resnick wrote the book to the musical, and we were doing it in Woodstock before we moved it into downtown Chicago. There was one night she and the other writers in the musical were all running house together and we were having a party. They said, “Pat wants to talk to you – she’s upstairs.” I go upstairs, and I was just wandering down the hall and there’s this open doorway, and there was nothing in the room but a mattress on the floor and a red lightbulb, and the light is on. So it’s a red light, and she’s laying on the mattress, and she wasn’t, you know, a knock-down, drag-down beauty or anything like that. She literally patted the mattress and was like, “Sit down.” She said, “Megan, have you ever kissed a woman before?” And I was like, “No.”
And she said, “Do you want to?” And I said, “Nooo.” CA: But you have kissed a woman before, right? MM: I have. And I did like it. Maybe she
tried to or something happened or I broke away. She just wasn’t the one for me. (Laughs) Later, when it happened, I thought it was quite cute. Different situation, different girl. Better. CA:There’s no denying the influence of Will & Grace on generations of LGBT people. For you, what does it mean to hear stories from LGBT people who saw themselves being represented on a barrier-breaking TV show that cultivated visibility? MM: Words can’t really describe what it
means to me. All you really hope to do, if you’re a performer and if you’re not an asshole, if you’re coming from a really legitimate, sincere place, is to have a positive impact. So, to have been a part of a show that actually not only helped people come out to their parents, or to come out period, or to not feel like they were alone – much less in the larger view and maybe, possibly even contributing to an awareness and an acceptance that has resulted in all the strides that have been made, especially gay marriage. savage love

My brother is a virgin and turning 30 in a few weeks. He said he wants to hire an escort just for drinks and conversation for his birthday, but he doesn’t really know how to tell what’s a reliable service or what criteria he should be looking for to tell whether an agency is legit, reliable, etc. I’m very happy he came to me with this because I can tell it’s not something he wants to share with many people—but I don’t have any advice or knowledge to pass on regarding this and I want to respect his privacy by not discussing it with everyone in our social circles. Do you have any advice in regards to what he should be looking for?
Just Drinks that’s just how you do it now.” Another rarely discussed, perfectly legal alternative to figuring out if an escort is for real: pay them to meet up for drinks and conversation, which just so happens to be all your brother wants (or all he’s willing to tell you he wants). “Obviously, this is not a good option for the budget-conscious,” said Matisse. “But if you want to test your chemistry and create some trust on both sides before booking a private date, it’s a solid way to go. Note the keyword, though: PAY her for her time. (Most ladies have a
My Younger Brother’s Romantic Order
Anyway, MYBRO, back to your brother and Matisse’s advice. “I’m not saying ‘no social media’ equals ‘bad escort,’” said Matisse. “There are lots of good escorts who don’t have much of a social-media presence. But if you want to get to know a little about who someone is before you meet them, 16

Man Behind The Cam Girl
Say this: “She’s an independent contractor with a video production company— she makes her own hours and works from home. It’s a great gig. Oh hey, how about them Bears/Colts/Cubs/Broncos/Braves/WhateverTheFucks.” I’m a tall, slender, attractive, fit, artistic, female 65-year old, taking testosterone, and now without a partner. I’m not sure how to go about engaging in noncommittal quick sex dates. I don’t know of any escort services for the ladies, but I would be interested. I’m also interested in exploring the bisexual side of life. Where would you advise I go?
“Look to social media,” said Mistress Matisse, a writer, sex worker, and sexworkers-rights activist. “Now that so many review boards have been taken down, social media is the best way to find a good independent escort.” About those review boards: Law enforcement agencies, always on the lookout for ways to “save” sex workers by making their jobs more dangerous, have gone after online sites, aka review boards, where clients rated and ranked escorts and—more importantly—escorts communicated with each other about safety, clients to avoid (flaky, rude, unhygienic), and clients they absolutely shouldn’t see (erratic, threatening, violent). Elizabeth Nolan Brown wrote a great piece for Reason about the issue last fall (“The Truth About the Biggest US Sex Trafficking Story of the Year,” September 9, 2016), and everyone should go read it at Reason.com.
People, however, are obsessed with what other people do for a living. So what’s the best answer for when I’m asked what she does? She’s as unsure of what to say as I am. I’m bringing her to a company event (I work in finance), and both of us are sure everyone is going to ask what she does (cocktail party small talk is the worst!). What are your thoughts on this subject and other things in a relationship like this?
public social meeting fee that’s lower than private-time rates.) And remember the basic rules when you do decide to set a private-time date: Don’t ask about sex and don’t talk about money other than to briefly acknowledge that you have seen her rates and agree to pay for her time. Expect to use condoms and to abide by the rules of whoever you’re seeing.”
Curious And Wondering
I’m going to echo Mistress Matisse and suggest diving into Sex Work Twitter. Most male sex workers target their ads/online presence to other males, since men are likelier to buy sex, but many male escorts are bisexual or straight but gay-for-pay. They’ll happily see female clients, as will many female You can follow Mistress Matisse on Twit- sex workers, you just gotta ask—politely ter @mistressmatisse. and, again, without talking about sex explicitly. I’ve been seeing a girl recently who revealed to me she’s a cam girl. I’m totally okay with it. She makes a great living, it’s important to her, and it turns her on—all great things! But it’s something she likes to keep to herself, and for good reason, obviously.
