HAPPY NEW YEAR from the

Waldorf Astoria, Berlin

SOBELLO

Letter from the Editor After a pretty tumultuous 2015, we begin 2016 with great expectations for more peace, good health, love, and happines, and we wish that all your dreams come true and through in this new year. While writting this letter, I am watching the CNN reports of the unfortunate and horrible fire in Dubai happening just hours before midnight on New Years Eve, and I cannot help but think about all the ups and downs that these past 365 days has brought all of us. Despite everything negative that has happened, I like to believe we are a community and world who is all about hope and optimism, and we live in a world that is better today than it was yesterday. We also hope in the new year, we will all be smarter and choose peace rather than war. Choose love rather than guns. Choose entertainment rather than gossip, and finaly, we hope that this time around, people finally understand we are truly all the same, and all we need to do is just learn about each other, be compassionate towards one another, and love rather than hate. The best way to start is by bringing back some humor, and Telenovela on ABC does just that thanks to our cover star, Jencarlos Canela. We had such a fun time doing this photo shoot, while dancing to the beats of Jencarlos’ nusic. Also in this issue, we bring more of the fashion, entertainment, and per usual, we share with you our SO BELLO picks for the beginning of this 2016 year. Also, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for making our 100th issue the most read issue in BELLO mag history. Happy New Year! -Alek Aleksandar Tomovic, Editor in Chief

Whereas the unique principle of displaying the time in words remains unchanged. At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than a matrix of seemingly randomly arranged letters. Only the gentle touch of a button reveals: “IT IS HALF PAST EIGHT”. The words change in five-minute increments, four small points below the matrix provide the exact minutes. In a little more detail… The multiple award-winning brand, QLOCKTWO, brought the “time in words” principle onto the wrist. The characteristic display, with its clever letter matrix, is also available in black and white, and in five languages: German, French, English, Italian, and Spanish. In an elaborate, technically complex procedure, the letters are etched out of a very thin metal plate. This innovative dial creates an almost mystical three-dimensional effect. Every other detail on the watch stays true to the brands proven guiding principles: QLOCKTWO FINE STEEL features long-lasting LED technology, display of the date and seconds, elegant steel case. ST. PETERSBURG IS ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING PLACES IN FLORIDA. Petersburg and the Dali Museum is one of those stops that have become a mustvisit. The museum is faithful to Dali’s vision of mixing a sense of playfulness with a personal psycho-analysis. The gardens are set up as an intricate maze that surrounds the museum and bring an ethereal vibe to the environment. The captivating design and architecture of the building pay tribute to his aesthetic and love for intricate shapes. In addition, the decorations honor some of his most notable moments, including his pointy mustache and the melting clock from his famous painting “The Persistency of Memory.” The museum is home to some of his most famous works and has frequently hosted exhibits from other artists including Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and M.C Escher. I can honestly say that visiting The Vinoy and St. Petersburg is a wonderful and educational experience that will give you a new appreciation for the past and a hopeful outlook on the future. “A subtle, sensual sparkle” BY: STEVEN CARVER

CREATING A PIECE OF JEWELLERY ISN’T AS SIMPLE AS IT SEEMS, ESPECIALLY WHEN DEALING WITH NATURAL ELEMENTS. THE SOURCING OF MATERIALS IS DIFFICULT, BUT SO IS THE MANNER OF COMBINING THEM IN A HARMONIOUS WAY. THERE ARE ONLY A FEW WHO CAN FIND THE GEM WITHIN THE STONE; WORKING WITH IT, RATHER THAN AROUND IT. IT’S A GENUINE TALENT.

Looking at his home country as a source of inspiration, Brazilian born jewellery designer, Fernando Jorge, instills a laidback sensuality in his collections. Initially studying in São Paolo, Brazil, he later moved to London for an MA in jewellery design at the prestigious Central Saint Martins. Before launching his eponymous collection in 2010, he honed his craft working for almost a decade at various Brazilian jewellery labels; it was there where he fused his knowledge of gemstones with the multi-cultural aesthetics of Brazil.

Fluid Diamonds Drop Earrings Fluorite

While many would overlook using locally-sourced gemstones and minerals from his home country (where they’re considered less precious), Jorge ingeniously incorporates them into his designs. The organic shapes of the stones – which include lapis, rubelite, tourmaline, calcite, serpentinite, amazonite, chrysoprase and chalcedony – are polished and enhanced by small diamonds, while the use of a delicate gold snake chain in signature pieces adds a subtle touch of luxury. resulting earrings, rings and bracelets are sculptural, yet retain a sense of understated elegance. With a growing list of fans, the collections are stocked in an ever expanding coterie of prestigious stores around the world. It’s not surprising this all happened in a short period of time. The designs are desirable; statement pieces that whisper without having to shout. And doesn’t that I-must-haveit mentality signify what’s covetable in today’s world?

Lightning

strikes BY: STEVEN CARVER

LIGHTING INFREQUENTLY STRIKES THE SAME PLACE TWICE. HISTORICALLY SPEAKING, STATISTICS ARE NOT ON ITS SIDE. MORE THAN TWICE AND IT’S AN ANOMALY. SOME MIGHT CALL IT FATE IF IT DOES OCCUR, BUT IN THE FASHION WORLD, IT’S DUE TO HARD WORK, TALENT AND AMBITION (OR A COMBINATION OF THE THREE). With over 35 years of experience in the fashion industry, Jeffrey Rudes has fought fate with his entrepreneurial vision. The man behind denim company, Paris 2000 (started when he was 18), Area Code and A. Gold E., he is mostly known for founding J Brand in 2004. While he sold it to Fast Retailing (parent company of Uniqlo) in 2014, he couldn’t stay away from the fashion industry for too long. Launching in 2015, the Jeffrey Rudes menswear line combines an effortless elegant style with European craftsmanship (this is achieved via a base headquartered in Los Angeles and an atelier in Bologna, Italy). The cut and construction of each garment harks back to Rudes’ experience in the industry and the minute details well thought out (jacket linings, polished buttons), and well executed. Frequent requests for sharp suiting options in wool, crisp poplin shirting, fine knitwear, skinny jeans, and leather and shearling outerwear are all offered. These essentials are required in the 19

wardrobe of every man; designed to feel good and worn at any time of the day. Further solidifying Rudes’ status as a man with a plan, the brand’s first flagship recently opened in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. Residing in a historic building, the space offers an understated and contemporary setting – enhancing the aesthetic of the clothing – for clients to shop at their discretion. Featuring walls of hand-polished French lacquer, Italian marble floors, Makassar ebony wood and chrome details, the environment feels both luxurious, yet cocooning. With product displays at the front of the store, additional “living” areas at the back, plus a relaxing lounge and VIP room in the lower level adds an element of exclusivity to the physical shopping experience not found online. Question is: Will lightning strike again for Jeffrey Rudes? The chances are in his favor. January 2016 - BELLO

Oscar Watch 2016:

Unlocking The Secrets Of ‘Youth’ An interview with the cast of filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino’s latest masterpiece BY GERRAD HALL @GERRADHALL

“I don’t see myself that way, but I’ll accept it,” the two-time Oscar winner, sitting just a few seats away, chimed in. “You’re a legend. You’re an icon,” Keitel tried to clarify. “That’s it—do icon,” Michael Caine interrupted, hoping to help Keitel save face.

The 76-year-old New Yorker—known for any number of Martin Scorsese films (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ) or Quentin Tarantino movies (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction) or his Oscar-nominated turn in The Piano—was referencing his sixminute scene with Fonda, who gives a tour de force in what is, for all intents and purposes, her only scene in the

stunning Paolo Sorrentino film. It also happens to be the scene that has thrust the just-turned 78-year-old back into the Oscar spotlight, 28 years after her last nomination. In the film, which opened last month, Fonda plays movie actress Brenda Morel, muse to Keitel’s Mick Boyle, a director who is working on a new screenplay with a group of young writers and trying to convince her to star in it. Her brief visit to him at the picturesque Swiss hotel where he’s staying is a contentious one, a moment that sets the scene for the final act of the film. But most of the movie, which was nominated for the Cannes Film Festival’s grand prize, the Palme d’Or, centers on Mick’s friendship with Caine’s Fred Ballinger, a renowned composer and conductor living the retired life at the Alps spa retreat. There he does a lot of reflecting, mostly brought on by a persistent invitation by the Queen of England to conduct some of his most famous compositions in a special concert, a request he continually refuses. That reflection makes him wonder where his life went, a sentiment the actor shares, calling upon a scene in the film to endorse his understanding of the character. “I’m at my doctor’s, and the doctor says to me, ‘How do you feel about getting old?’ And I say, ‘I don’t understand January 2016 - BELLO

how I got here,’” Caine explains. “And that applies to me personally. I don’t understand. About two years ago, I was 35, and suddenly, I’m 83, and I’m going, what the hell happened?” Though Caine and Keitel have never worked together in their decades-long careers, the Brit says it’s their preacting jobs that gave them an unspoken inside track, citing his own experience in the British Army and Keitel’s as a U.S. Marine. “You just know certain things that no one else knows, and that’s the end of that. And that started our friendship,” Caine, who won an Oscar for The Cider House Rules, says. “He’s a very nice man, and I’m a very nice man, and we became friends. He’s a fabulous actor. And I’m nearly as good as he is.” Sorrentino, whose film The Great Beauty won the Best Foreign Language Oscar in 2014, certainly thinks they’re both fabulous. The Italian filmmaker wrote Fred for Caine. “I was amazed that he’d heard of me because we didn’t seem to be in the same sphere,” the actor recalls, still bewildered by it all.

Rachel Weisz as ”Lena” in YOUTH. Photo by Gianni Fiorito.

Mick was written for another actor whose schedule wouldn’t allow him to take the role, so Sorrentino turned to Keitel, who has a much more entertaining take on how he got the job. “Paolo offered it to two other actors, but I had Joe Pesci kill them both,” he jokes, “and here I am.”

Here, proud of his work and what he got to explore. “The themes [Sorrentino] wrote about in Youth were just so touching and reflected the way I was thinking about my own life,” Keitel ponders, “the friendships I had as a youth growing up in Brooklyn, how important they were to me, to my survival growing up and

what its underlying currents of betrayal and loyalty and fear of the truth mean in developing real friendship.” Fear is the dominating emotion for Lena, Fred’s daughter, played superbly by Rachel Weisz, the third Oscar winner in the cast. Early in the film she learns her husband is leaving her for a British pop star, Paloma Faith (playing herself). Overcoming that fear—of being alone, of being rejected, among other things— Weisz concurs with great enthusiasm, is a key to youth. “I agree. I agree, I agree, I agree. When you’re very young, you’re not scared of anything, foolishly so. And you get older and wiser and then you get scared of things,” she explains. “It’s wonderful to overcome fear. That’s the greatest, greatest thing.” Luckily, Lena has her father to turn to. As his assistant, she’s almost constantly by his side—even in the bed they share. “We never really analyzed it,” Weisz responds when asked about the questionable situation she describes 31

as not “incestuous…but it’s still very needy.” “I didn’t dare analyze it,” Caine jumps in. “I just kept over my side [of the bed], my back to her. Lena kept over her side.” While they didn’t analyze the situation, it still spoke volumes to Weisz. “I think her whole life is her dad, her very famous, charismatic, wonderful dad. My sense is she might need him more than he needs her,” she explains. “She’s very worried for him. She knows that he’s in a kind of creative crisis. She knows that he’s in this deep mourning for my mom, his wife. And I think she really wants him to be released again… free from being a prisoner of the past.” Paul Dano, who also plays an actor in the film—his character, Jimmy Tree, is popular for playing a robot in a blockbuster franchise early in his career, but now he’s at the hotel preparing for a very different role—observed something besides fear flowing into that proverbial fountain of youth.

“I think I see how art can keep a person vital because you look at these three,” he says, motioning to Caine, Keitel and Fonda, “and how vital they are as people and artists still, and I wonder how much art has fed them and brought them to this place today, being so healthy and happy and hungry and still contributing.” “Hungry being the operative word,” Fonda interjects. “That’s what youth is about–staying hungry. How can I get more? How can I learn more? How can I stay passionate, hungry? And some people lose it and phone it in.” No one phones in anything in Youth. On one hand an artistic achievement, beautiful in its metaphors and imagery, it’s also a tremendous meditation on what it means to be alive and passionate. In those regards, Youth, like Fonda, also deserves to be called iconic, admired for its contribution to cinema, respected for invigorating life into those who see it. January 2016 - BELLO

The Inevitable Rise of

Troye Sivan BY HIKO MITSUZUKA @TheFirstEcho

HE MADE HIS AMERICAN TELEVISION DEBUT LAST MONTH ON THE TONIGHT SHOW, AND HIS MESMERIZING DEBUT ALBUM, BLUE NEIGHBOURHOOD, DROPPED JUST IN TIME FOR THE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING SEASON.

Troye Sivan, the 20-year-old YouTuberturned-recording artist from Australia, seems poised to dominate 2016, but before radio stations put him in their rotation, you need to sample his smooth electro-R&B-pop sounds in “Wild,” a song that is working quite nicely as an ENTERTAINMENT issue - BELLOmag.com

opener for the new year. (Entertainment Weekly agrees -- check out their Must List in their annual Best & Worst of 2015 issue.) The song also acts as the first chapter of the gorgeously produced Blue

Neighbourhood trilogy, three music videos that chronicle the tragic romance between two boyhood pals. The second track, “Fools,” is just as mesmerizing with its subtle, synth-driven grooves and lyrics that yearn for a better life. “Talk Me Down” is the devastating 40

conclusion in which its singer learns a heartbreaking don’t-know-what-yougot-til-it’s-gone lesson. All three are available on YouTube. Don’t let the youthful and boyish looks fool you. With a rich voice that could hypnotize several demographics, Sivan is proving to be the first legit artist born out of Gen Z to take the music industry by storm. Here’s hoping that, by this time next year, you can say you knew him when... Blue Neighbourhood is now available on iTunes and troyesivan.com.

GET READY WORLD... THE LATINOS HAVE ARRIVED TO NBC IN FORM OF THE NETWORK’S NEW COMEDY TELENOVELA. IT’S BOUND TO BE YOUR NEW FAVORITE SERIES—AND FOR MORE REASONS THAN ONE. FOR STARTERS? CUBAN MUSICIAN/SINGER-SONGWRITER, JENCARLOS CANELA, STARS AS XAVIER CASTILLO, A SUPER HOT AND SUPER FAMOUS ACTOR AND APPARENT EX TO TELENOVELA’S LEADING LADY, EVA LONGORIA. GET TO KNOW THE 27-YEAR-OLD MIAMI NATIVE BELOW BEFORE HE HEATS UP THE SCREEN IN THIS LAUGH OUT LOUD COMEDY.

BELLO: HOW DID YOUR PASSION FOR MUSIC BEGIN? Jencarlos Canela: It began when I was about 7 years of age. My family hosts a party every year on December 16th, and I asked them to let me sing at the party. I was surrounded by music at all times. My dad is a songwriter, and I used to see my older brother sing around the house and there was always live music at our parties. I learned a few songs, and when the big day came, I sang for about 150 of our family and friends, and I became addicted to music and the feeling of performing. We didn’t know anyone in the industry, so my dad would ask the neighbors to let me sing at their parties and backyards became banquet halls, then came festivals, and now we are touring everywhere, and I still feel the same way I did when I was 7, singing for my family in my backyard.

B: HOW DID YOU TRANSITION FROM MUSICIAN TO ACTOR? AND HOW DO YOU BALANCE DOING BOTH? JC: Some producers saw me singing at a festival and asked me if I knew how to act. They offered me a role as a musician in telenovela pilot, and

that’s how it began. I also started doing some musical theatre which allowed me to do both, which I enjoyed. Music is my priority, and it’s who I am. I am a musician that enjoys acting. So I’ll tour for a year and if an acting project comes up that I’m passionate about, I’ll accept the challenge, and once it’s done, begin touring again.

B: WE HEAR YOU ARE WORKING ON YOUR ENGLISH ALBUM DEBUT. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM THE ALBUM? FROM THE STYLE OF THE SONGS TO THE SUBJECTS YOU ARE SINGING ABOUT? WILL A TOUR BE FOLLOWING? JC: Expect music with soul, with emotion, with a heart that beats in different tempos. Music you can move to, lyrics you can listen to. The subjects we are singing about are just real and relatable. Lyrics everyone can identify with. I won’t try and label the music we are doing, but you can definitely hear some of my big influences such as Prince, Michael Jackson; you’ll here my Caribbean influence as well, somewhere in there. Yes, we plan to share our music live with everyone that wants to come out and feel something

with us. B: GOING FROM LATIN TO AMERICAN TELEVISION MUST BE SUCH A DIFFERENT PROCESS. HOW DID YOU GET THE ROLE IN TELENOVELA? JC: I feel the stars aligned for this project. They were looking for a singer/ actor that came from the telenovela world, and the show takes place in Miami. That’s everything I am. Even though I had to go in and audition for the role like everyone else, I just feel this role was meant for me.

B: TELENOVELA IS DIFFERENT THAN WHAT WE’VE SEEN BEFORE. IT CLOSELY RESEMBLES CWS JANE THE VIRGIN. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE NEW STRONG LATINO PRESENCE IN HOLLYWOOD THAT’S EMERGING? JC: It’s exciting that there are more Latino stories being told on television, however “Telenovela” is very different from “Jane the Virgin.” Both shows celebrate unique and strong characters. I have so much respect for the show and their amazing cast, especially my dear friend and someone that I admire tremendously, Jaime Camil.

B: HOW DOES WORKING ON TELENOVELA DIFFER FROM WORK ON AN ACTUAL TELENOVELA? JC: Ummm... what’s the difference between working on an actual telenovela and working with a bunch of Latinos on “Telenovela”??? Yea, um not much difference lol. B: WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN MIAMI SURROUNDED BY SUCH DEEP CUBAN CULTURE? JC: My Cuban culture is a huge part of who I am. Cubans are happy, social, strong spirited, humble, and loving people. I have a very big family, and we are very united. They are my everything!! B: WE’VE SEEN A BIT OF YOUR CHARACTER. WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT THE SHOW TO GET INTO? WHAT TOPICS WILL TELENOVELA TOUCH ON DURING ITS FIRST SEASON? JC: You hate Xavi in the beginning of this show because all of his flaws are exposed from the beginning, but his evolution as the show progresses is what I love about this character. We will touch subjects such as love, friendship, heartbreak, sex, marriage, and divorce. The everyday situations that we can all relate to, and every character offers a different perspective on it. B: WHAT IS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU IN WHICH YOUR FANS MAY BE SURPRISED TO KNOW? JC: I am very passionate about our philanthropic work. I feel it is a purpose we all have in common as human beings, to help one another regardless what the color our skin is, what our beliefs are or where we are from. The work we do with the IRC is special to me. “St. Jude’s Children Hospital” and “Live Like Bella” are also two of the foundations we work with helping kids with cancer get a fighting chance to live their lives and potentially change the world. More than ever, we need to send a message of hope and love.
