The other night I was driving home and had to pull off the road because I was so engrossed in this woman’s gripping story. In a 25-minute podcast for Love & Radio, Diane Weipert tells the story of what happened when she looked outside her window one day and noticed two young new tenants had moved into the apartment across the garden. You can listen to the astonishing story at www. soundcloud.com/loveandradio/the-living-room (photo via JC Backings).

Experts recently discovered a long-lost Mozart composition in a reserve collection vault inside a Prague museum. The piece is, in fact, a collaboration between Mozart and Antonio Salieri, and it’s casting doubt on the long-held assumption (as told in the film Amadeus) that Mozart’s young death at 35 was caused by was caused by Salieri poisoning him. You can hear the piece and learn more about its significance at www.goo.gl/iF5ssP (photo courtesy of the Blair School of Music).

I’m loving this stunning glass pavilion-style home in the Catskill Mountains of central New York state. Designed by Audrey Matlock Architects, the 3700 sq.ft. home is laid out in such a way that each window carefully frames a view of the gorgeous landscape beyond. Add an infinity pool into the mix and it’s yet another dream home of mine. See more pics at www.goo.gl/ngbQad (photo by Peter Aaron/ Esto).

There’s an area in your brain called the DMN (default mode network) which automatically applies a narrative to everything that happens to you in your life: from fear, to anxiety, to loneliness, etc. This narrative machine convinces you of two things: 1) that these things are real, and 2) that these things are your identity. Watch as Jon Kabat-Zinn, a respected medical researcher and professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, explains why these narratives are not real and how to turn them off: www.goo.gl/eCT3Za. After years of steady decline, the monarch butterfly population appears to be bouncing back. Each years these little miracles of nature make the huge migration from Canada to Mexico where they rest for the winter. This year experts noticed the Mexican forest where the butterflies reside in the winter was filled with 3X the number of monarchs as last year (10 acres in 2015 vs. 2.8 acres in 2014). The news isn’t all good though. Just 20 years ago the monarchs were covering 44 acres of forest. Read more here: www.goo.gl/Thazs8 (photo credit: Edgard Garrido/Reuters).

WILDES (a.k.a. Ella Walker) is climbing up the Hype Machine charts with her brand new single “Bare.” Capturing a similar sound and atmosphere as London Grammar and Daughter, WILDES has been on constant repeat for me these days. Listen to her powerful new track here: www.goo.gl/u50PRp.

A curious hunch sent economist Keith Chen on a path of research that has led to a remarkable new discovery -- as it turns out, the language you speak has a direct impact on your saving habits, whether you smoke or not, and how well you eat. How is this possible? It all has to do with the future tense. You can read the full story here: www.goo. gl/xjCwiy (photo via Engadget)

What does it take to have your song ranked #1 on Spotify’s playlist The Most Beautiful Songs In The World? FLAME™ Visual Effects Software: BY BRENT LAMBERT

Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret That Takes Decades Off Superstar Faces HOLLYWOOD’S TOP A-LISTERS ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO OPEN UP ABOUT THE CLOSE TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS IT TAKES TO KEEP THEM LOOKING YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL: THE TRAINER, THE NUTRITIONIST, THE STYLIST, THE MAKEUP ARTIST, ETC. BUT THERE’S ONE EXPERT THEY HAVE IN THEIR BACK POCKET THAT THEY WILL NEVER EVER DISCUSS -- THEIR DIGITAL PLASTIC SURGEON. You cannot watch a television series or feature film these days that has not been retouched by the software of FLAME™ visual effects artists. While one team of VFX wizards is busy with other kinds of software to build the digital robots, explosions, fantastical background environments and set extensions for any given movie -- there is a second top secret VFX crew busy

BEAUTY issue - BELLOmag.com

using FLAME™ software to digitally erase the crows feet, wrinkles, flabby bellies, pimples, and saggy necks of the film’s superstars. Created by Autodesk, the world’s leading software giant for architecture, engineering and industrial design programs, FLAME™ first emerged roughly 20 years ago when the company

developed Inferno -- the world’s first real-time video-editing setup. As years went on, Inferno slowly evolved into the FLAME™ suite which now provides the sophisticated tools necessary for 3D compositing and editorial finishing -effectively, it’s like Photoshop for movies. We all understand how Photoshop is used to remove blemishes, wrinkles,

8

and fat from models on print, but how exactly is it possible for FLAME™ to do the same for motion pictures? If it can take a full day or more to retouch one image in Photoshop for a magazine cover, wouldn’t it take years to finish the retouching on a film which, at 24 frames per second, would mean retouching 172,800 images (i.e. 24 x 7200 seconds in 2 hours)? The answer is no. FLAME™ is able to use vector wireframe “masks” to track the faces, hands, and bodies of actors -- thereby retouching the raw skin live. The hard work and man-hours are instead spent creating the vector masks which isolate the actor from the background.

months retouching the veiny hands in every scene of a film for one unnamed 40+ leading lady. The artist, who chooses to remain anonymous, says he’s also spent countless hours removing cold sores, giant pimples, and sagging necks -- and that’s just for starters. In an interview with Mashable another anonymous FLAME artist opened up about the process. “You can track pieces of skin, move it around, do warping of the face or body,” he tells Mashable’s Josh Dickey. “Even though the software has gotten so good, sometimes you still have to do it frame-by-frame.

In extreme close-up, you need to really see that person has not been touched — if people see what you have been doing, that’s not going to work.” Dickey adds, “Another beauty artist from a different company who did not want to be named recalled a time when an A-list star in a superhero film was unhappy with his crow’s feet in a closeup. When the usual technique to smooth them out wasn’t yielding a natural-looking result, the VFX team copied the crow’s feet from a slightly younger actor’s face and voila! The world’s first wrinkle-transplant was a success.” (Images via Autodesk)

The technology is so important to these A-listers that they are willing to spend days sitting side-by-side with these VFX artists to meticulously supervise their digital retouching. Most of the top actors in Hollywood will not sign off on a movie until they personally approve of the FLAME™ work first. I know of one FLAME™ artist who spent a week or more with one very famous individual who was more concerned about making sure her neck was retouched perfectly than she was about the content of her documentary. This same VFX artist once had to spend 9

AIDAN ALEXANDER IS A BUDDING YOUNG ACTOR ON THE HOLLYWOOD SCENE HAVING RECENTLY RELOCATED FROM HIS CHILDHOOD HOME IN IDAHO TO THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF LOS ANGELES. SINCE THEN AIDAN HAS GAINED AN IMPRESSIVE SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE ON TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM AND HE ALSO HAS 213,000 GLOBALLY ACTIVE SUBSCRIBERS ON YOUTUBE - QUITE THE ACCOLADE! FROM HIS IDOL, LEONARDO DICAPRIO, TO THE DOSOMETHING CHARITY CAMPAIGN HE IS AN ADVOCATOR OF AND HIS FIRST EXPERIENCE AT MEN’S FASHION WEEK, THERE’S NOTHING WE DIDN’T UNCOVER WITH HOLLYWOOD’S NEWEST RECRUIT.

BELLO: You are currently starring in the independent Feature ‘Vikes’. Tell me about your character in this? AIDAN ALEXANDER: It’s a love story revolving around a high school kid who decides to petition his school to change the name of their sports and academic teams from the “Vikings” to something less offensive to Norwegians, all to impress a girl! B: I know you are a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio! If you had to pick your favourite film that he has starred in, what would it be? AA: My favorite film of his would have to be ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’. He should have won an Oscar for it, his performance is seriously so impressive. B: If you could star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in a film, what would you want your role to be? And what sort of relationship would you have with Leonardo in the film? AA: I think playing his brother or more realistically now, son, would be really cool. Can you tell I’ve thought about this before? B: So I understand as well as acting you’re very into your fashion. You partnered with the fashion app ‘The Hunt’ during last years Coachella Festival and hosted it on Snapchat. Are you going to do it again this year? 43

AA: I’m not doing it again this year, but it was actually really fun. Last year was my first Coachella and being able to have a platform to document all of it was really fun. B: The Fashion Week’s just took place recently and you actually went to New York for the 2016 Men’s Fashion week. There were some incredible brands there! What was your experience like? Was this the first Fashion Week you have been to? AA: Yes, this was my first Fashion Week! I didn’t really know what to expect going into it, because all I’ve heard is it is crazy busy. It’s true, I was doing more things per day than I think I’ve ever done. It was such a cool experience. I remember coming back to my hotel one day at around 1am, and just going through everything I had scheduled that day. I think it was like 12 things. I can’t wait for next year. B: As well as using Instagram and Twitter you also have a huge fanbase on YouTube. Tell me a little bit about why you started this? AA: I have been interested in film making since I was little. I remember me and my childhood friend Peyton used to always film little short horror films and I would get really into it. YouTube is just another way I can put my little projects up online. It’s also a great way to talk to new people, which I’ve always liked.

B: Out of all the topics you cover and things you talk about on your videos, (fashion, humourous clips etc.) what would you say your audience like the most? AA: My audience loves when I tell stories. I recounted all of my (many) embarrassing moments in a video a while back and everyone seemed to love it. I just filmed another story time video about a flight horror story I had, so they should like that too. :) B: So your good friend Bailee is also in this issue coming out. She spoke about some of the philanthropic organizations she is a part of. I understand you do a lot of work with the charity DoSomething on their campaign to put an end to bullying. What made you start working with them? AA: Preventing bullying is something that’s always been really important to me. I’m from Idaho and I have first hand experience of seeing how bullying can affect people, and so I’ve always tried to do whatever I can to make sure I’m helping in any way. DoSomething is incredible. The amount of incredible campaigns they always have running is mind blowing. B: Is there anything else you have going on that you want to talk about? AA: I just wanna thank everyone so much for the support. I’m so grateful for all of you. Much love. March 2016 - BELLO

Beauty Blender continues to impress me with their new products and innovative tools. They have recently launched a slew of new sponges, one of which is the Blotterazzi; a better blotter! It’s made of the same spongy material as the famed original Beauty Blender. However, it’s the only blender that’s used dry. It’s designed to absorb oil without disturbing makeup. Each mirrored compact includes two blotters that can be washed, dried and reused. www.sephora.com

COVER STORY

Bailee

Madison The ingénue taking Hollywood by storm. WORDS BY MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOS BY LESLIE ALEJANDRO

55

March 2016 - BELLO

BAILEE MADISON IS ONE OF THE NEWEST RECRUITS TO THE WORLD OF YOUNG HOLLYWOOD. I COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW MUCH MADISON WAS INVOLVED IN AND JUGGLING AT THE MERE AGE OF 16! FROM SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS, TO WRITING A BOOK, PRODUCING HER OWN MOVIE AND STARRING IN SOME OF TELEVISION’S MOST ICONIC SHOWS, THIS RISING INGÉNUE IS ONE TO WATCH. IN SPITE OF HER SOARING CAREER AND MASSIVE ACHIEVEMENTS THUS FAR, YOU’LL BE HAPPY TO KNOW THAT SHE’S ALSO ONE OF THE MOST HUMBLE HUMAN BEINGS ON THE PLANET!

BELLO: So you star in Hallmark Channel’s original series “Good Witch” opposite Catherine Bell and James Denton. What’s it like to work alongside them both? BAILEE MADISON: It’s so exciting. We just finished the second season. Within the last few years we’ve really truly grown as a family and as friends. Catherine and James are obviously exquisite actors but amazing human beings so it’s a joy to get to be able to create these scripts with them and bring them to life on set. They’re my second family! B: Is there anything you can give away ahead of Season 2 this April? BM: Season 2 is a big learning curve for Grace. I think in Season 1 because she was younger she was more sure of herself but then, when you start hitting your true teen years, you start to second-guess your identity and who you want to be and who society wants you to be. So, there’s a lot of growing in terms of school and guys and friendships. There are some really great moments between her and James Denton’s character, which were probably my favorite to film this season. B: James Denton is great isn’t he? BM: “He’s like my dad on set, I tell him everything. He tells me what texts to send to guys! He’s fantastic”. BEAUTY issue - BELLOmag.com

B: So you’re also part of another magical show, “Once Upon a Time.” The cast is huge on this program, given how many fairytale characters there are! Tell me a little bit about the atmosphere off-set. BM: It’s the biggest honor and pleasure to be a part of “Once Upon a Time.” I was a fan before I was on it and I’m an even bigger fan after being able to be on it. Every time I go it’s like coming back home and no time has passed, they welcome me with open arms and there’s this amazing team. There are ribbons and crystals; it’s like Cinderella’s workshop! The vibe on set is as magical and as intense as the show in the most perfect and amazing way. It’s an actor’s dream truly. B: You have a recurring role on another show “The Fosters” as troubled teen Sophia Quinn, which is quite a different character from your previous ones. Can you draw any parallels between yourself and Sophia? BM: I think one of the reasons ‘The Fosters’ does so well is because they touch lives, suddenly inspire lives and help lives in a one-hour program and that’s very rare to find on TV these days. I was so attracted to Sophia because she’s complicated and very vulnerable, she’s not really sure where she is in life and I think that’s why a lot of people can relate to her. There are so many guys and girls who go through depression

and start to second-guess themselves or their worth on this world and I think if there’s anything I could have drawn from it, it’s from this girl who has a really beautiful life. I think all of us can find the beauty in our lives but yet she still has complicated situations that she doesn’t know how to deal with and she doesn’t know the best way to go about them. I think I can draw from the fact that she wants to be as good as she can be, a lot of girls go through that. B: So let’s talk about one of your older projects, ‘Just Go With It’ as you got to work very closely with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. Did they give you any advice as a young actor in this industry? BM: It was amazing. If I could relive that set every day I would, it was the best vacation that we called work, ever! Adam was one of the first people who really taught me the art of improvising and I kind of go on to every set now with that in the back of my mind and it’s fun to get to try different things and you know feel the beats of a scene and you can do something different which takes you somewhere very new and exotic. He really taught me that. Obviously Jennifer is like Jennifer. There’s nothing more you have to say! She’s perfection! B: And you had a great British accent! BM: Thank you! It was supposed to be bad, it was all over the place. 56

It’s the biggest honor and pleasure to be a part of “Once Upon a Time.” I was a fan before I was on it and I’m an even bigger fan after being able to be on it.

Originally it was supposed to be an Indian accent when I auditioned for it. I think that was so bad that they were like ‘let’s do British’ and that was even worse so they were like, ‘let’s to Cockney!’ B: Social media has done some incredible things over the last decade but it’s also brought with it a lot of trolls. I understand you’ve started a campaign to try and overcome these problems. Tell me a little bit more about it. B: So I started a campaign called ‘I Am More Than A Word’ a couple months ago when I was in the realization that words really do hurt no matter who you are, how old you are, what you do for a living and where you are in the world. So I created this when I was affected by some words and I was so hurt that I realized that I wasn’t the only one and I wanted to hopefully just touch one heart. I wrote a Tumblr about it and the reception was more than I was ever expecting so I decided to do a YouTube video. It showed the challenge of everyone writing down negative words that they’ve ever been called on a piece of paper. I put it to Rachel Platten’s ‘Fight Song’ and from there on the social movement kind of begun. I’ve been so grateful and I get stories on a daily basis saying ‘I was called this and I smiled at them and walked away and I wrote that word down and I ripped it up in the school hallway and I’m now 57

okay.’ So it’s a very exciting thing, social media’s a great platform to hopefully get to inspire and help people not feel solo. B: So as well as your campaign I understand you’re very passionate about various philanthropic and social causes. Tell me a little bit about what you do for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation? BM: I have been blessed to work with them for almost five years. It’s an amazing foundation that’s connected me with so many families and girls and guys who are going through chemo and radiation. People I’ve been able to stay in contact with still and call friends and get updates from them every morning from their parents. A little girl named called Alex Scott started this foundation and was diagnosed with cancer a day before her first birthday and at four years old she started holding lemonade stands to raise money for cancer and at eight she lost her battle. She raised over a million dollars in the four years she had these stands though. Her mum [Liz Scott] and her dad [Jay Scott] decided to keep the foundation going and I have lemonade stands whenever I can. They actually called me with a very exciting phone call a few days ago and I’ll be announcing what I’m doing with them soon. It’s kind of expanding my relationship with them in a really, really exciting way”.

B: Is there anything else you want to share with your fans? BM: There’s a movie called “Offer and Compromise” that I just did. That was with Bellamy Young and Tom Cavanagh, which I’m really excited about, it’s a really great Indie, it’s kind of darker than usual for me. I think it will be fun for people to get to see that. In August of last year, I produced my first movie, “Annabelle Hooper and the Ghosts of Nantucket.” That was a really crazy experience for me because I’ve never produced anything before and I learned a lot. We had three weeks in Nantucket to film and I only had three weeks off in between filming my shows and we got it done and we’re in postproduction right now! I’m even more excited, as I just co-wrote my first book. It’s a young adult novel with an author friend of mine called Stephanie Miller who’s an incredible author and we’re in negotiations with some amazing publishers right now and we’re just kind of looking for someone who is just as excited about the book as we are. Then the even bigger picture - when we wrote this book we visualized it as a movie, so hopefully the reception of the book is just as much as we hope it to be so then the next stages will be script and getting it on the big screen! Nailing It WITH PILAR NOIRE

NAIL FILES VARY FROM TRADITIONAL EMERY BOARDS TO CRYSTAL OR GLASS FILES, AND BUFFERS INCLUDING SHINY BUFFERS - ALL SERVING A DIFFERENT PURPOSE TO MAINTAIN AND IMPROVE YOUR NAIL STYLE. WHAT MAKES ONE FILE DIFFERENT FROM ANOTHER IS THE GRIT OF THE FILE. WHAT IS A GRIT? LET’S GET TO THE NITTY GRITTY OF NAIL FILES, SHALL WE?

A grit is a single unit of measurement used to identify how course or how fine a file is. The lower the grit number, the courser the nail file is. The higher the grit number, the finer the file is and the safer it is for natural nails. Nail files come in many grits. Lower grits remove length quickly. The medium range of grits can be appropriate for strong natural nails. A higher grit is good for damaged nails and a really high grit smooths out frayed edges. Some files have two sides. A file that shows two grits has two functioning sides. The lower number grit is for length reduction and the higher number grit is for shaping and smoothing. Always finish with the smoother grit side of the file. Strong nails can handle a range of emery boards depending on what needs to be done to style the nail. Enhancements can handle a rougher grit because it is a stronger foundation to work with. Crystal or glass files help prevent chipping, splitting and peeling to nails that are prone to do so. For weak and peeling nails, a crystal file is the best option because they are the least aggressive in possibly compromising the existing integrity of the nails. Crystal files have always felt very glamorous to me. 71

Buffers are great to smooth any rough edges from everyday wear. If the unruly edge is too deep then an emery board will fix that. Buffers are also helpful in gently removing the shine of the nail in prep for polish or enhancements. For men and those preferring a bare natural nail, a shiny buffer is wonderful. I love the high shine produced from shiny buffers.

need to force it. A heavy hand leads to over-filing.

My tips:

- To create a beautiful balanced nail shape, it is best to determine the shape of the free edge by mirroring the shape of the cuticle line. Different people have different shapes, round, oval, more squoval, etc.

- Use a light touch when using any kind of nail file on natural nails. Guide the file along the nail and let it do the work without adding pressure, there is no

- The traditional rule of filing from side to center works well for shaping. Angling the file slightly under the free edge is best to smooth quickly. - For all shapes, file in one direction. Smooth well at an angle to finish.

Surrounded by bright shades of peaceful blue waters and lush green palm trees, the resort is nestled in a private location away from rowdy tourists. Divided into two adjacent sections: Palace Deluxe Hotel and the Adults-Only Hotel, Barceló Bávaro Beach Resort accommodates visitors according to their needs and purpose of visit. However, amenities can be explored by all guests 18 of age and over. Palace Deluxe Hotel includes the Club Premium suites for guests looking for an ultra-premiere experience, including a three-bedroom Presidential Suite with its own pool and outdoor patio and the Family Club which is perfect for groups who need adjoining suites and a pool and playground area accessible to children.

ocean that can be relaxing or romantic depending on the attitude. After all, it’s a vacation, right? Loved the simple yet chic décor, and double sinks which mean enough space for makeup and toiletries. Nothing more annoying than not having ample room to get ready before heading out for fun night!

Play All Day, Dance All Night: So many things to enjoy, so little time to do so? Not here! One of the things I love about the Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe Resort is that everything is on the grounds. The ocean, four sparkling pools, restaurants, a casino, a club,

and a theater are some of the great options at the resort. There is enough entertainment to do something different each day and night and avoid the overcrowded and noisy areas. If you forgot something at home, the hotel has plenty of shops from Spanishbrand Desigual to boutiques with lines from local designers, perfect for souvenirs or to freshen up the wardrobe while on vacay! Barcy and Pirates Island Water Parks are a dream for the kids and adults who

enjoy playing with water spouts, race down the slides, swim with the waves, and role play in a castle or ship. If you want some indoor play then I suggest a fun game of Laser Tag, the 18-hole mini golf, or the Bowling Center which is filled with gaming machines and a 4 lane bowling alley perfect for everyone. Head to the 1,400 seater Gran Teatro Bávaro to enjoy one of the spectacles of the night. Each day there is a different theme, from Brazilian Samba to a journey through music’s history. The shows flawlessly mix Caribbean

instruments with Las Vegas décor and Broadway style musicals. They are fun, perfectly composed, the costumes are striking and the dancers and singers are incredibly talented. After the theater, it’s time to visit the 24-hour Casino and give lady luck a chance. Choose from table games like roulette and poker, or the slot machines, in a chic atmosphere, which includes a cool VIP area on the 2nd floor reserved for premiere players. Just don’t spend it all before getting to the best part of the night: Disco Bávaro! Prepare

your feet and soul for an unforgettable night of dancing in an open layout club with walls surrounded by screens showcasing the latest musical videos.

Foodie Paradise: As a food aficionado, I can honestly say that this resort has one of the most diverse options for dining. You have over 11 restaurants and room service to choose from that will suit your palate and mood of the day. From Mexican to French, I can assure you that you will fall in love with more than one place.

Buffet Restaurant will satisfy your cravings for local gastronomy in a lively decorated area. The pulled pork, yucca with onions and mushrooms, and rice pudding are some of the dishes not to be missed!

Retreat and Reflect: Wake up in the morning and receive the energy of the sun with a fun set of water sports activities. All non-motorized equipment is included for guests so you can choose from kayaks, pedal boats,

snorkels, or my fave: hobie waves. If you want to enjoy a day out with a group then renting a glass-bottom boat is an awesome way to get direct views of the marine life and explore the area. The U-Spa is a must-stop during your visit to the Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe Resort. Go for an 80-min Lomi-Lomi massage with mango oil. This Hawaiian inspired ritual uses a technique that imitates the movements of the waves, and balances your mind and body, for a truly relaxing

La Comedie was one of my favorite spots. The French décor and refined ambience are perfect for an intimate dinner. Milhoja with ratatouille, Lobster thermidor and the Chocolate fondant will not disappoint you. Believe me, I went back for that fondant and champagne before going back home. For some variety, my next pick is Kyoto Japanese Sushi Bar. The modern fusion cuisine mixes bold Asian flavor with an infusion of tropical hints. The sashimi, Teppanyaki salmon and rice cake were my favorite dishes. You cannot leave the island without some traditional food. Bohio Dominicano BEAUTY issue - BELLOmag.com

experience. The center has a sauna and Turkish bath, cold and hot plunge pools, hydrotherapy, and Vichy showers infused with aromatherapy and color therapy for a complete wellness experience. If you wish for quietness without hiding from the world, then head out to the private pool. The decompressing waterfalls and a lounge area overlooking the resort and ocean, make it probably my favorite spot to swim and sleep under the sun, just don’t forget the sunblock!

Explore The Area: Once you are ready for some adventure then connect with Vacaciones Barceló and book an outdoor tour to one of the nearby attractions and parks. I chose a Buggy excursion to Macao Beach. One of the most fun filled outings you could choose from!
