Last Day on Earth Ross Marquand on The Walking Dead Season Finale WORDS MICHELLE GANNEY WWW.MICHELLEGANNEY.COM PHOTOS AMANDA PEIXOTO-ELKINS
NOW HERE IS A MAN OF MANY TALENTS. HE MAY PLAY AARON ON THE BIG SCREEN IN AMC’S APOCALYPTIC DRAMA THE WALKING DEAD, BUT THE VERY CHARISMATIC, ROSS MARQUAND, ALSO BOASTS ANOTHER IMPRESSIVE TALENT – CELEBRITY IMPERSONATIONS.
He did an exclusive bit for Vanity Fair where he showcased his very impressive roster of impressions. From George Clooney to Justin Timberlake, Antonio Banderas, Brad Pitt and Michael Caine, every single impersonation was ridiculously spot on. Marquand really enjoyed his video for Vanity Fair, but he did admit they were quite challenging. “You really have to rely on facial expressions and also how you move your body. It’s a very specific brand of impressions”. The in-demand actor also made an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel show a few weeks ago to showcase more of his extraordinary talents, but this time, he did impressions as if the actors were receiving awards. Again... unbelievable! “It depends on the mood, but I really love doing like angry Harrison Ford or Kevin Spacey”. 33
When he’s not practicing acceptance speeches as Matthew McConaughy or Patrick Warburton, he’s fighting for his life in a post-apocalyptic zombie filled world. Like I said, a man of many talents. I think fans were left in pieces after Sunday’s big finale, which Marquand admitted he was quite looking forward to. “I’m excited and terrified. I’m more thrilled than anything to share it with the fans because so much build up has occurred over the last several months”. The show might follow zombies, the destruction of the world and other worldly themes. However, Ross believes the stories and relationships in the show have a correlation to modern society. “I think you can easily draw a comparison to so many of the political problems going on in the world. I think for me, my take on it is it’s not one of politics or even society in general but
actually personal. That’s why the zombie genre is so fascinating to me because it’s always been about this group of monsters that have no life left in them, but they’re still moving. They’re kind of just aimlessly moving in one direction”. He continued, “That says a lot about society more than anything – this constant struggle of living a passionate life versus living a life of zombies, a life of complete joylessness. That’s what the zombies represent to me, and I think everyone has their own interpretations. Some people will see it from a political standpoint, a religious standpoint, or a personal or a spiritual standpoint. I think that all of those interpretations are correct”. The show explores deep, psychological themes, which is why it has garnered such an extensive fan base. But I think April 2016 - BELLO

we can all agree that the finale took it to a whole new level. “This episode took the show in an entirely different direction. It went to a place that is so dark and so brutal, and I’m excited about that because I’m a fan of dark material to begin with, so it’s just so exciting because we put so much effort into this finale”. Speaking about the newest recruit, villain Negan, Marquand was so excited to see him in the finale. “Jeff’s an amazing, incredible actor, so I’m excited people got to see him”. Even though the series is set in a fictitious world, when you’re living day in day out in a dark character, it’s going to affect you. “We had a hard time sleeping when we were shooting not because we were doing a lot of night shifts, but because it just got in our heads. It was so morose. Imagine all of your favorite dark, apocalyptic movies rolled into one, and I don’t even think they come close to touching the emotional tenure that we were able to put together. I mean it was intense”. The zombie genre is something of a guilty pleasure for most people. It’s dark, destructive, terrifying and threatening, yet people still can’t seem to get enough of these apocalyptic storylines. “I think there’s a part of everyone, for good or bad, we are kind of interested in seeing what the apocalypse would be like for whatever reason. Maybe it’s because we’ve seen how modern society doesn’t work at times, and we’ve seen how society can be a little bit mundane at times, and so for me, I think it’s a really
35
interesting commentary on the sort of darker side of all of us that’s curious about how they would react and that’s an interesting thing – the world over.” Marquand went on, “I think people are intrigued by this notion that society, and however they know it to be, could literally break down at any time, and then how would you react to that. I think every single person on this planet can see himself or herself in a different character on our show. There are so many people who have come up to me and said, ‘I love your character because of this. I relate to this.’ I know that’s not unique to me, I think that every single cast member has had people come up and say the same thing. So it’s really amazing”. It might be taking up a lot of this time and energy but The Walking Dead isn’t the only thing Marquand has going on. He just finished working on an animated feature with a pretty talented cast. “It’s called Sheep and Wolves and that’s with Ruby Rose from Orange is the New Black and Tom Felton from Harry Potter, so a very different type of project. This is a friendly, family comedy”. The Colorado native has also been busy with two Hulu shows, Deadbeat and The Mindy Project - so basically, a far cry from the destruction and catastrophe that ensues The Walking Dead. Marquand is very charming and equally as talented, so don’t worry girls, you might not be seeing Aaron for a while but Marquand has enough projects on the go to keep you happy.
SEASON FINALE EXTRAS: BELLO: The rest of your cast members fromThe Walking Dead have been very vocal about how traumatic the season 6 finale was! How many people have called and messaged you since the finale? ROSS MARQUAND: Oh man...the outpouring of texts and calls has been quite steady. And since we’re watching it for the first time with the fans, we’re as blown away as anyone else. B: Your co-star Norman Reedus said he couldn’t speak for an hour after he watched the finale. What would you say the most shocking part of the episode for you was? RM: Watching Carol get shot in such a brutal fashion was so unnerving and her response to it all was nothing short of heartbreaking. Seeing her just embrace her own mortality like that... It really messed me up. B: We were introduced to super-villain Negan who has completely changed the direction of the show. What do you think we can expect from next season? RM: I can only speculate, of course, but I think season seven is going to be incredibly dark. It’s going to be very difficult for Rick and the group to bounce back and maintain their humanity after such a harrowing interaction with Negan.
