akeup and Skincare are a very important part of our beauty routine, and they become an even more essential part during the summer season. The heat, humidity, and exposure to salt water or chlorine can take a toll on our delicate skin and our hair. That is why we have compiled a list of top 5 products to keep your strands manageable, your face glowing, your nails on point, and much more. Now you can be ready to dance to the beat of any music festival the right way!

John Frieda In-Shower Lighting Treatment: This product will become your new hair go-to secret. You can avoid a visit to the hair salon and showing your roots in one easy step. The gloss refreshes hair color, it can boost it up to one shade, and leaves strands incredibly shiny. Choose to Go Blonder or bring the Brilliant Brunette in you! $8 www.JohnFrieda.com

Bea Polish Me Silly Multi-Color Shifting Polish: This handmade line is free of DBP, Formaldehyde, and Toluene, making them a healthy choice in a chemically saturated market. “Paradise” is perfect for festival season because it changes colors, from emerald to purple, according to the light. Add a coat of “Freckles” Neon Glitter Polish for fun a glow in the dark effect. $8 www.Etsy.com/shop/PolishmeSilly

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Glow Sheers: Packed with Vitamins A, C, and E this SPF 30 tinted moisturizer is ideal to give skin a natural glow, cover imperfections and blemishes, and protect it from harmful sun rays. Is lightweight so it can be used during the day, and reapplied whenever it might be needed. $13 www.Neutrogena.com

Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Matte Lip Color: I love these lippies because they have a high-impact matte color, yet leave the surface super soft. The packaging comes in a pretty vintage-styled mirrored tin case, making it great for onthe-go retouches. Let’s admit it: we are all kind of obsessed with the Lip Kits, and if you have not being able to get your hands on them, then these velvety ipsticks are your best choice. $8 www.HardCandy.com

Dove Refresh+Care Dry Shampoo: It is incredibly necessary to keep a dry shampoo always at hand. The smell of smoke and BBQ meats can leave your hair with an unpleasant scent and lacking shine. I use this dry shampoo to keep my hair frizz-free, with a fresh smell, and to get rid of the oily roots and tangled ends. The package is small enough that can be carried in a purse. $5 www.Dove.US

hen I travel, I need as much space as I can get for all my necessities, and of course, that extra pair of shoes that I will more than likely not wear. That is why I try to choose wisely what I take with me before packing. I make a list of the items I have to take, the days I will be gone, and what is the purpose of the trip. More than often, it’s for work, so I must carry every possible tech gadget I have for the “just in case” moment. Thankfully, I have found a few items that I can easily take everywhere, even when I’m sightseeing or in meetings, because they fit in my pocket!

The Airhook In-Flight Tech Device Holder: Prepare to meet your new in-flight bestie. This retractable gadget turns into an adjustable electronic device holder that can be placed on the top of your closed tray table! Forget about being cramped in your seat and having to maneuver your tablet and coffee at the same time because it even comes with a built-in cup holder. $25 www.TheAirhook.com

MyCharge Style Power Portable Charger: I cannot leave my house, much less travel, without carrying a portable charger with me. Rarely do we get a chance to find a suitable wall socket, especially if traveling overseas. I love that this super funky lipstick-sized charger gives me over 15 hours of extra power wherever I go!! $20 www.MyCharge.com

Wraps Leather Headphones: I am utterly addicted to music and love creating playlists that remind me of places I visit, or enjoying my favorite tunes while I’m away. These cute in-ear headphones with built-in microphone can be worn as a bracelet, giving you instant privacy anytime you need it, in a fashionable way. $38 www.MyWraps.com April 2016 - BELLO

Lady In Red

F

or Spring Summer 2016, it’s all about red blossoms and red wine. Whether it be Bourganvillea, Bordeaux or Burgundy. The colour of love, passion and power gets us in the mood this spring/summer 2016. Red is a big theme, used as the backdrop of beautiful prints, as seen on the catwalks of Gucci, Dolce&Gabanna, Boglioli and Max Mara. D&G’s rose print Bellucci pumps, or red Sicily bag, are totally great worn with

as monochrome, matched with black or white, or merged with an electric blue or bright green, it’s a double dose of bright this season.

Boglioli teamed red mens suits or coral trousers with salmon pink shirts. Whilst elsewhere blouses were made bold with majestic blooms as unisex items that transcend gender norms. It is all about the emotions that red brings.

The beauty of red is that is can be as feminine or lady danger as you want it to be.

Red brings tradition and modernity together and will be in the wardrobe, one way or another. Red T’s brighten up denim and red tailoring brings a twist of ruby dazzle into the day. Worn alone

Red was worn by Miss Wintour herself at New York Fashion Week 2016, who was seen in a beautiful red woolen Maison Margiela dress. Make up wise, models wore red lips on every runway show. Not so much coral, but more blood red orange, magenta, and rusty red. Ruby Woo means business.

Red mood board Fiesta, Campari, red brings excitement and energy, a blushing cheek or a budding flower, are bang on trend. Mixed with the calming, softer nature of this season’s palette, colours such as Rose Quartz and Peach are in for the Spring. #spring #summer #red #trend Roses are red, violets are blue. Tahiti

TRAVEL

A Jewel Hidden In The Ocean

I

BY DEE TRILLO Senior Lifestyle and Travel Editor| Dee@BelloMag.com| @HauteFrugalista

f there is a place on everyone’s bucket list is Tahiti. As part of the 118 islands and atolls that conform the French Polynesia, this photo-ready place has a landscape with enough beauty to fill in any wanderluster’s fantasy. Serene beaches, towering mountains, fresh food, diverse ecosystems, and the most welcoming people are few of the many things that put The Islands of Tahiti as one of our Top Travel Destinations to visit in 2016.

#116 issue - BELLOmag.com

38

Tahiti belongs to the Society Islands, the archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean grouped into the Leeward and Windward Islands. These are then divided into smaller islands which include Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora. I know, it sounds complicated. Pretty much like a Russian Matryoshka Doll. But, trust me, once you are there, not even 18 hours flying can prevent you from dropping your bags and running towards the sand. The first thing you will notice about Tahiti is the gorgeous view from the sky. It is a staple on every travel site because the hues are so vivid that they almost feel as if they were out of a painting. Between the colors of the Pacific Ocean and the Lagoons, it seems as if there were over 50 shades of blue

mixing in the water. From deep blue, aqua, and mint green, to literally crystal clear, the palette complements the lush green mountains and delicate white Tiare flowers. It is the best way to begin an unforgettable journey. Â

QUEEN OF THE PACIFIC! Arriving to Papeete, the capital of Tahiti, is an easy thing. The FAA’A International Airport is a short eight-hour direct flight from Los Angeles via Air Tahiti Nui. The airline also connects visitors to the other islands through their numerous routes. The city is a cultural hub perfect for people who are on their way to other islands or have a cruise stop. It has the colonial style architecture mixed with the bright colors

of the typical flowers of the region. In addition, Tahiti gathers over 68% of the overall population of the French Polynesia, making the rest of the isles mostly inhabited, and free to be explored. Something very unique to the island is their black sand at Lafayette Beach. If you wish to fully enjoy its properties, then stay at the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort. This kind of sand is known for its mineral components great for rejuvenating and exfoliating skin. Located in front of the Bay of Matavai, the hotel is a prime spot for whale and dolphin watching. Their property has a gorgeous pool deck and restaurant overlooking the beach, and Le Spa where you can find the most delicious handmade papaya scented Monoi de Tahiti oil. Book a Premium Deluxe Ocean View Suite for the day if you are waiting on a late fight, or for a longer stay if you have time. The room is laid out with a detached living area, guest bathroom, private quarters with comfortable beds, and separate tub and shower area. The views from the balcony are incredibly interesting. The color of the sand against the mountains and the deep blue waters transmit a sense of mystery and complicity. If you have time to sightsee, then prepare to spend some euros at Le Marche. It will be one of the most especial experiences you will have while buying souvenirs.

39

April 2016 - BELLO

This 155-year-old market is filled with decorative items, clothing, and jewelry that truly capture the essence of the island. You will be fascinated by the amount of traditional accessories such as pareos and flower crowns, natural oils from Monoi and Tiare, and genuine Tahitian pearls that can be purchased there. My favorite pieces were from Hanatea Creations by Sylvana Deane. The designer uses pearls from the farms of the French Polynesia. They naturally come in a range of colors from soft blush to emerald, and have a delicate chromatic finish.

MAEVA TO MO’OREA A quick 30-minute ferry ride or 10-minute flight connects Papeete with the Island of Mo’orea. One of the most spectacular and exciting places I have visited so far. Anything you have heard about the beauty of the French Polynesia can be found here, exalted and ready to be discovered. Warm waters, knee-level snorkeling, an array of bright colors, perfumed flowers, and daily fresh catch can be found in Mo’orea, because it is inherently rich in flora, marine life, and a great weather. The experience cannot begin without selecting a place to stay and no resort in the island beats Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort. There are countless of reasons to choose this property.

Whether you are planning a romantic getaway, a family-friendly vacation, or want to find some of the best scuba diving in the world, I promise you will not leave disappointed. An infinity pool overlooking the ocean, bike-friendly paths, and an 18-hole golf course border the property. The hotel is also the only one with clear views of Tahiti. Once you have witnessed the majestic sunset over the horizon, be ready to watch the not-so distant city turn into stars over the water. One of the most recognizable aspects of the French Polynesia is their Over-

water Bungalows. These luxury suites at the Sofitel Resort offer an extraordinary kind of accommodation that will leave you with no desire to check-out. Nestled on top of the lagoon and with direct access to the sea, this room became a home away from home for me, and it will for you too. A king bed draped in a tul canopy is the centerpiece of a very spacious living room, separate work space, and roomy walk-in closet. One of my favorite features is the washroom. It is set up in a way that any couple can enjoy every area without feeling confined. The double-sink bathroom includes an indoor rain shower, and a wooden enclosed outdoor rinse section strategically situated on top of the water, giving an enchanting vibe as if somehow we could turn into a mermaid or merman. The balcony and private sundeck will give you more than ample space to enjoy the sun, listen to music, and snorkel without having to leave the comfort of your own suite. At night, the glass bottom floor offers a magical view of the nocturnal sea life. I recommend taking a night-time dive and observe the impressive display of fishes that only come out during the evening, and how their scales look as if they could glow in the dark. Leave your balcony door opened one time and you will see how incredibly peaceful and re-

boardwalk deck, and perfectly selected wines to accompany moonlight dinners, the staff knowns how to make everyone feel welcomed and a bit spoiled. A must-do is to watch a Polynesian Dance show at one of the restaurants. The live music from the tambours and intense performance by native dancers, who are dressed in traditional clothing, is a remarkable display of their talent and love for their culture.

laxing it feels to fall seep while being lullabied by the sweet sounds of the waves. Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort has an exceptional dining project lead by head Chef Guillaume Burlion, who has made of K Restaurant and PURE two foodie must-visit spots. and offer only the best ingredients to the guests. Lamb racks with banana fei, pumpkin soup with Tahitian vanilla beans, oysters with salmon eggs, smoked salmon with sweet potatoes, smoked duck breast with grilled veggies, spiny lobster with crispy fennel ravioli, and a selection of fine French cheeses were some of my favorite dishes. From custom-blended drinks at VUE Bar, cigar and cognac pairings at the

Their beautiful Sofitel So Spa encompasses the laissez-faire vibe Tahitians are known for. Pressurized rain drop massages and island infused aromatherapy transport you to a charming land of relaxation. Best thing is that Sofitel Moorea has an exclusive line of products, including the most amazing non-greasy Maitai Massage oil that can be used in hair or skin to keep them glowing and smelling like paradise. Moorea is a vibrant island where you can find many things to do. Start with a 4x4 Jeep Safari Tour of the island. Locals conduct these excursions where you will learn about the history of the

island, explore the village of Maeva and feel like Indiana Jones discovering the ancient archeological ruins of Marae, and visit artisanal shops in the town of Huahini where you will want to buy some scrumptious Brut D’Ananas or Liqueur De Coco. If you are feeling more adventurous choose a daytrip and hike to the “Belvedere Lookout” where you can see the diversity of colors of the ocean from the mountain, have a Jet Ski water tour that will take you throughout the lagoon and give a waterfront view of the entire island, interact with the stingrays, and stop at the pineapple plantations. It is beautiful to be surrounded by these growing fruits that release a sweet and striking scent. Whether by land or sea, there is so much beauty to see and fall in love with.

ROMANCE IN BORA BORA Despite being the most famous island in the French Polynesia, Bora Bora, is a very secretive location that can only be accessed via airplane. A one-hour flight from Papeete will land you in one of the most beautiful airports I have ever seen. Directly located on the water, it offers unprecedented views of the magnificent landscape of the island.

#116 issue - BELLOmag.com

If the reason for your visit is to spend quality time with your better half then Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island, the adult-only sister resort to Sofitel Bora Bora Marara Beach Resort, is an excellent place to select. Surrounded by the white sand beach and colorful lagoons, the private island can only be reached via a catamaran that sails exclusively from Sofitel Marara. This property is ideal for honeymooners and couples seeking a low-key destination without sacrificing the beauty

the island has to offer. It is no wonder why many celebrities choose to vacation or rekindle their romance there. If you have any doubts, the movie Couples Retreat can give you an idea of how secluded, and exotic it is. Choose between a luxury lodge, a villa, or an overwater bungalows depending on what you want. The lodges located on the hill give you a broad view of the water and mountains, making it a gorgeous location for Instagram-worthy pictures and videos. A delightful restau-

they get along very well and are able to stay close to each other without any fuss. Being surrounded by sharks, and feeling as if you are bait can definitely be a bit overwhelming at first; but, once you are there, you will feel extremely connected to nature and become part of the environment. Swimming with the stingrays is a lovely thing because they are gentle and sweet animals. Their soft and velvety texture, and flexible body will have you laughing like a little kid every time they swim under, over or next to you.

rant and spa are available at the hotel, but the main star of this property is that it is enclosed by a circle of corals. It is a place to find unique species and admire the marine life without using complicated diving equipment, kayak during the day, or swim at night.

Then have a traditional beach side lunch at a private Motu where you will eat fresh seafood and fruits, learn how to craft a dish out of banana leaves, and hand make coconut milk. It would not be a complete trip without swimming with the sharks and stingrays.

Set up a sunset champagne toast at the top of the hill at the resort and watch the magnificent way the sun sets on the water, as if it was kissing the surface. It will be one of the most romantic moments of your life. Then, have a loving candlelight dinner on the beach. The charming setup is enchanting, and the proximity to the water makes it all feel dreamy and fairy-tale like. Delectable dishes, such as foie gras and Rossini beef on mushroom sauce, and a passionate dancing show will make the evening memorable.

It sounds dangerous, but it is possibly the most captivating encounter I have ever had. These enigmatic animals swim freely in the water, in an ecosystem rich in marine life. Surprisingly

As a personal note, I can say that is a perk that Bora Bora can only be reached via seaplane because it makes it more difficult to become touristy. However, it also makes it a bit more expensive due to the exclusivity of the island. If that is what you seek, then it is perfect for you; however, if your budget does not permit an extra payment per flight, then Moorea is just as beautiful and interesting as Bora Bora. To learn more about The Islands of Tahiti, please visit: www.Tahiti-Tourisme. com To Book Your Stay at Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort or Sofitel Bora Bora Private Island, please visit: www. Sofitel.com To Book Your Day Trip or Stay in Papeete, Tahiti, please visit: www.TahitiPearlBeach.com

Book a Day Eco Tour and spend the daytime admiring the unique fishes and corals that Tahiti has to offer. The water is so clear that you can appreciate the beauty of all the sea creatures in their wild environment, as if they were in a fish tank. Colorful coral gardens, silver and navy schools of fishes, moray eels, Manta and Eagle rays, and more can be found at almost every snorkel spot. 43

WORDS BY MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOS BY AMANDA PEIXOTO-ELKINS

H

umble, ambitious and endearing. That pretty much sums up James Lafferty. Of course you’ll recognize him as bad guy turned good guy Nathan Scott from One Tree Hill where he played the legendary character for 9 seasons. However, the California born actor has steered away from the Tree Hill Ravens with his new role as antagonist ‘Kyle’ in WGN America’s Underground. James is a very talented actor but it seems his ambitions don’t stop there as he aspires to “aggressively pursue” directing. See what he had to say below.

I get asked a lot whether I liked playing Nathan as sort of a bad guy or a good guy and I always say that it is hands down more fun to play the villain. BELLO: So we won’t dwell on it too long but we have to talk about One Tree Hill quickly! It’s really nice to see on social media that you guys actually have quite a lot of mini reunions! When was the last time you guys got together? JAMES LAFFERTY: That would have been in North Carolina. It was a kind of a reunion for the fans. It was a couple of months ago. Because of the fans bringing us together once or twice a year we all do get to see each other more than we probably would have if it wasn’t for the fans. It’s a cool dynamic. B: Do you ever miss North Carolina? JL: Oh yeah absolutely, I still have property there and I still have a lot of friends there. I have a real sort of investment in Wilmington, NC. For me it was a place where I really grew up, it was the town I spent the first few years of my adult life. I learned a lot of life lessons there, I had a lot of really great times, and it’s always going to be a place I go back to. B: Could there be a One Tree Hill TV reunion one day? JL: [Laughs] You know we get asked that question a lot lately. It’s kind of a trend right now, to have revivals of shows that were popular years ago but I think it’s most popular with shows that have been off the air for 10, 20 years. I don’t think One Tree Hill’s been off the air long enough for everybody to come back around to it. You just never know what the future holds though. B: Let’s talk about your film, Waffle Street. I saw it over the weekend and I loved it, it was really good! What was it that made you want to take the role? 47

JL: I was approached by a couple of directors I’ve worked with before and they were kind of in a pinch. They didn’t have their guy and they were going to start shooting in like 5 days I think. It was a pretty quick turnaround; I was on the plane within a couple days of actually getting the role. You saw in the film, I’m in almost every scene so it was a bit overwhelming to cram all the character preparation into a few days but I was sort of able to space it out. I think upon reading the script I really love the message. I love stories about redemption and I love the theme of reinventing yourself and reinventing your definition of success and that’s really what I think the story’s about at its core. Those tend to be the movies that I love. B: You got to play opposite the lovely Julie Gonzalo. Have you two worked together before? JL: It was the first time I ever met her and she was lovely. She worked with the producers before so they brought her in and knew her to be incredibly talented and great to work with so that was a really cool experience getting to meet a new actor and form a friendship there through the course of shooting as well. B: You and Danny Glover’s character have a really special relationship in this film. What was it like to work alongside him? JL: It was great. It’s funny because you look back on the film and in terms of the number of scenes, I don’t actually have that many scenes with Danny but the ones that I do have, where it’s just Danny and I - that relationship really resonated with the audience. Danny has this natural charisma about him that I think he brings to all of his roles and a lot of the credit for that relation-

ship working out goes to Danny for bringing that electricity that he has to those moments. B: So another one of your projects is Underground where you play Kyle. Compared with a lot of the characters you’ve played, he’s not as nice! Do you enjoy playing that sort of role? JL: Yes, yes absolutely. I haven’t really played, I guess what you consider to be a villain or at least an anti-villain since the early days of One Tree Hill. I get asked a lot whether I liked playing Nathan as sort of a bad guy or a good guy and I always say that it is hands down more fun to play the villain. Obviously every role is different and every project is different but for me playing an antagonist is, especially on a show where the stakes are so high like Underground, it appealed to me in a lot of ways. I feel first of all there’s ways to layer the antagonist, there’s this ability the character has. He can be a catalyst for so many different things that happen and I think you can make an impact as a character with a very small amount of screen time in doing so. So yes I jumped at the opportunity. B: Is there anything else you have going on that you want to share with your fans? JL: I had the opportunity to direct an episode of the royals, it’s a show on E! about the British royal family actually. It’s the 7th episode of the 2nd season. I also got the opportunity to direct on One Tree Hill. It’s something I want to aggressively pursue as another career path. I think it compliments acting and producing so well, it’s a natural progression. Something I’m very excited about. April 2016 - BELLO
