EDITOR’S
note,
APRIL, 25, 2016
This week’s cover star is a special one for a variety of reasons. He, Bryshere Y. Gray stands for hope. Growing up poor in West Philadelphia, he’d soon experience the flashing lights of Hollywood at first hand thanks to his hit series Empire, and his killer rhyming skills. Having grown up less than an hour from Bryshere, and having attended the high school he wished to attend, this cover-story brings us full-circle. It’s a story of fate, and a reminder that our path in life is chosen. If the talent is there, the treasure will come. Empire is merely a stepping stone for this young megahouse--and I couldn’t be happier stopping time with him in this issue. Ten years from now, we’ll do it again. It just might take longer to schedule.

THE
LIST
What We’re Obsessed With This Month BY HIKO MITSUZUKA @TheFirstEcho
As the weather finally warms up, we’re gearing up with a few things we can’t get enough of. You may want to take note.
1. Golden Girls Forever Break out the cheesecake! Author Jim Colucci’s comprehensive volume is more than just an eyecatching coffee table book. It’s a fan’s dream come true, taking us “behind the lanai” with over 100 interviews, never-before-seen set photos, and behind-the-scenes tidbits on the timeless 80s sitcom that continues to make audiences laugh. Think you know your Golden trivia? Think again.

2. The Invitation Made on a budget of $112,000, director Karyn Kusama’s lean, mean, and menacing thriller sets a majority of its action inside a beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills. The story is thick with tension. And the meticulous and deliberate pacing, along with a great investment in its characters, pay off -- big time -- once the film takes a jaw-dropping turn in its heart-stopping third act. The Invitation is an extraordinary mental workout, one of the best psychological thrillers in years -- and so far, one of the best films of 2016. (Now available on iTunes and OnDemand)
3. Stillhouse Whiskey Wondering what libations to bring to those outdoor concerts and festivals this summer? The first spirit to be packaged in stainless steel, this 100% clear corn American whiskey can “go where glass can’t go” (perfect for events like last month’s Coachella). Based in L.A., this portable and mixable concoction comes in Original and five other delicious flavors: Apple Crisp, Peach Tea, Coconut, Mint Chip, and Red Hot.

4. The Woods Creator and writer James Tynion IV and illustrator Michael Dialynas just released the 21st issue of this funny, thrilling, and epic series (from BOOM! Studios) about an entire student body and faculty of a high school that has been mysteriously teleported to what appears to be an alien planet filled with Viking-like footmen and creepy crawly things. It’s a compelling premise very reminiscent of Lost, populated with likable, relatable characters and injected with a tone and sensibility very reminiscent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Catch up with the first twelve chapters in Volumes 1-3. (Volume 4 comes out this June.)

5. Douchebags Just in time for summer travel season, these winkingly named carriers are quickly popping up at airports, train stations, and everywhere in between. The Norway-based travel gear company was founded by Truls Brataas, Jon Olsson, and Erling Magnus Solheim in 2011 and has quickly become a globally recognized brand. Our favorites: the Hugger 30L, “the ultimate carry-on travel buddy” that is like a handy duffle crossed with a smart backpack, and the Affair, an adjustable stylish black bag that works for the gym, the beach, or a weekend getaway.

F
loriana Lima is an American actress who can currently be seen on ABC’s unpredictable political drama, ‘The Family’, where she plays reporter Bridey Cruz. We were so happy to shoot her for Bello and it seems the feeling was mutual! “I’m so excited to be a part of Bello, I think it’s such a cute magazine”. We also played a game of ‘Bello Buzz’, so keep reading if you want to find out this beauty’s celebrity crush!
BELLO: Tell us a little bit about ‘The Family’? FLORIANA LIMA: “It’s a political thriller and it follows a family after the trauma of a kidnapping. Their son was kidnappped 10 years prior and he was thought to be dead so when he resurfaces it’s quite a shock and we’re trying to figure out if this kid is really who he says he is and that’s pretty much the whole story.” B: So you play a reporter, how do you find that? FL: “I love this role, it’s a really fun role because she’s this tenacious go-getter who really just wants the story and will do anything to get it and I think that’s a really good quality. She does get intimately connected with a couple of the family members and that’s her way of breaking down the walls of the characters and trying to draw some secrets out so she can get a good story. She’s a really fun character.”
B: I know you’re very into your fashion. What’s your style? FL: “I would say, I like to be as comfortable as possible but classic and chic. I want it to be comfortable but pretty! [Laughs] Sometimes I feel like I’m always in jeans. I love a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl.” B: I know you also like cooking. What’s your signature dish? FL: “Oh my gosh that’s a really, really good question. My Mom is Italian so I love cooking Italian. I would say - wow to narrow this down is kind of hard! Well I’ve kind of been on a health kick lately so I love a good quinoa dish, kale salad so I’m kind of looking toward a more healthy option.”

O
ne way or another it’s almost impossible for you to be reading this sentence without having heard of Lee Daniels’ series—Empire. Knowing Empire means being a fan of Empire—and the same could be said of one its brightest stars; 22-year-old Bryshere “Yazz” Gray. Yazz plays the youngest son of Terrence Howard’s Lucious Lion and Taraji P. Henderson’s Cookie—the rhyme spittin’, impulsive and talented Hakeem. In real life, his style doesn’t differ much from his onscreen counterpart. He’s chill, cool, with a fade that probably never needs tending to. His attitude and demeanor is strong, electric and inviting. We’re sitting side by side when his fluffy haired puppy, a mini-poodle by the name of “Prince” scurries over and jumps on his lap. Prince instantly settles down, as if he were waiting for me to continue the interview, apologizing for his interruption. It’s endearing. Born and raised in Philadelphia, younger Yazz’s upbringing wasn’t too far off from that of his character’s. He remembers tougher times. “I wasn’t really fortunate back then,” he says in a thoughtful tone. “My mother was a single mom, and my father was locked up in Jail. I was getting into a lot of trouble as a kid, in and out of Juvenile detention centers—stuff like that. Growing up in West Philadelphia was rough for me.”
#117 issue - BELLOmag.com
Yazz, as he’s known to be called now, is nearing the second season of his hit FOX show. in January of 2015 the month of the show’s premiere, it was ranked as the network’s highest-rated debut in three years—since then viewership has continuously and vastly increased. At one point reaching 16.7 million total viewers during it’s freshman finale. It’s a big show, with some big names, and even bigger music. For Yazz, it’s his first professional acting credit and its changed his life tremendously. “Booking the role was hectic, man” he says to me, letting out a slight smile. That I can only interpret as relief as he looks back on his journey. “I auditioned for a movie called Brotherly Love, and I didn’t get it. It was my first time auditioning for a film. It happened to be my manager’s film, and I told him— don’t ever put me in acting again. I just want to focus on performing, opening up for artists, and my music.” He’d soon change his mind. “Empire came along, and it was everything. All in one. I auditioned with Lee Daniels. I then learned how accomplished he was as a director and how he was also from Philadelphia. I instantly wanted to work with him.” Two years later, It’s safe to assume Daniels instantly wanted to work with him, too. Casting him in the role of the youngest Lyon son, a sharp-mouthed rapper, who gets into his own share of trouble. Hakeem’s performances outdo any of the trouble he finds himself in from time to time. Soon so will Bryshere’s. Having just finalized a contract with a major record label, the name of which hasn’t been disclosed, the Philly native gives me some insight onto what he’s been working on since. “It’s a little bit of hip-hop and urban pop. I want to say it’s a different layer of Hakeem, because Hakeem is a different layer of who I am. So with the music, it’s somewhat like the Sasha Fierce in me.”
As for the inner workings of his TV show? Things are smoother when the cameras are off, than it is on-screen. “We have great writers. But,sometimes the lines don’t go perfectly with a scene. Taraji and Terrence like to make sure the scene comes off realistically. We’ll go in and rehearse the scene, but it’s a debate. We’ll try and make it as close to real life as possible. Before we shoot, we have a meeting, like a family, and there’s a lot of “Jamal would say this, but Lucious wont react that way.” Those kind of moments. It’s real team-work.” Bryshere’s work ethic is like that of a true Lyon. Perhaps it was this precise quality that landed him the role. Wether this was the case or not, we’re just scratching the surface with he 22-year-old. “I want to be the new Will Smith, you know,” a Philly native myself—I did know. “I want to keep doing movies, and keep inspiring kids. Not just being a rapper. Or just a singer. There’s a lot of that out there.” He was right, the amount of pop-candy and senseless rap was abundant. But he was referring to the real shit. The shit they tell stories with on his show. “I want to keep at this good pace. I’m already a part of History with Empire. I just want to keep it going, man. ”

T
he Southern California desert was a hubbub of activity last month.
Across from the San Jacinto mountain range of the Coachella Valley, the Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs hosted its second annual Not A Pool Party at its vintage disco lounge Bardot. L.A.-based artist James Supercave kicked off the festivities, followed by electro-pop group Magic Wands. Baltimore-based synth wizard Dan Deacon also helped the crowd come together in a dance circle. Dance in a Panic brought the party with their DJ showcase, featuring KAV, DJ Clifton, Blonde Ambition, Golden Touch, and of course, Andy Rourke of The Smiths fame. Guests enjoyed burlap gift bags from Element, clothing and henna from Others Follow, fanny packs, bandanas and visors from Tillys, and complimentary bags of Maltesers chocolate.

Meanwhile, over at the massive music festival in Indio, 1OAK and Up&Down returned to the desert with one of the hottest parties during the big weekend. Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, and Scott Disick partied with festivalgoers at the exclusive private pop-up party. The Weeknd and supermodels Miranda Kerr, Dev Windsor, Constance Jablonski, Georgia Fowler, Jordy Murray, Imaan Hammam, and Rachel Hilbert partied along with Bella Hadid, Ruby Rose, Martin Garrix, Alesso and Snapchat CEO, Evan Speigel. The already hyped crowd were treated to a surprise DJ set by the Pizza Boys. Kendall and friends were even spotted passing out pizzas on the dance floor as guests enjoyed an impromptu performance by Post Malone.

his photographs of The Rolling Stones and their emergence into world-wide Rock & Roll fame. Breaking Stones not only serves as a reminder of one of the best American bands to ever have lived. It also restores the idea of reportage photography being art, immortalizing our icons for generations to come. O’neal & Mankowitz have achieved perfection in doing just that, with over 200 pages of pure in-the-moment beauty.

The Long Shadow Of Small Ghosts, Laura Tillman In March of 2003, a Texan couple committed a crime that would be hard to forget by the people of their town. Laura Tillman’s retelling of this story and the murder of three innocent and very young children is chilly, yes. It’s well-written, yes. But most of all, it’s exquisite in achieving a complete objective view of John Allen Rubio and the characters that surrounded him. Both before and after the murders. Tillman paints a full picture of the town of Brownsville, somehow finding a way to interject all that is positive of its people and its spirit. Keeping her space and never condemning her actual subject.
