EDITOR’S

note,

MAY, 02, 2016

When the forces of ideas and creativity come together, magic happens... And magic happened on our cover shoot, from the time the concept was created to the moment photography team, SOSA + ART called wrap. This week, we feature YouTube sensation and major influencer, Amanda Steele. Her effortless style inspired us to take her look to the next level. Shot in a room wrapped in floral fabrics, photographers SOSA + ART designed and created a beautiful, ethereal space perfect for Gucci to compliment the room in this season’s prints. We pride ourselves in the creativity and influence we bring to these pages. We hope you love what we create for you. Always,

hen it comes to the world of retail design, it’s safe to say we are very much living in a golden age. Whether it’s Prada’s astonishing retail stores in New York or Japan, or Herzog & De Meuron’s Miu Miu boutique in Tokyo, or the long impressive list of other groundbreaking fashion house flagship stores which are challenging all of the outdated concepts of retail design -- it is most definitely an exciting time for the convergence of fashion, architecture, and interior design. When it comes to the world of retail design, it’s safe to say we are very much living in a golden age. Perhaps the newest and most exciting example of this vanguard wave comes in the form of Rotterdam-based architecture and urban design firm MVRDV’s brilliant renovation of CHANEL’s Amsterdam boutique located on PC Hooftstraat, the city’s luxury-lined shopping street which is home to other boutiques including Prada, Rolex, and Dior. The

goal of the design was to bring back Amsterdam’s traditional architectural vernacular, which is being threatened by store after store after store that have replaced the existing brick facades with mundane (and huge) glass windows -- a trend that has emerged through years of globalization and retail design conformity. MVRDV’s response was their ingenious design concept nicknamed Crystal Houses, which aims to reimagine the future possibilities of glass construction -- a daunting engineering challenge that took their team of experts and entire year to research, test, and develop. “After conceiving the initial idea MVRDV worked closely with a number of partners to develop the technologies to make it possible,” MVRDV explains on their website. “Solid glass bricks were

individually cast and crafted by Poesia in Resana, near Venice. Research undertaken by the Delft University of Technology, in partnership with engineering firm ABT and contractor Wessels Zeist, led to the development of structural solutions and fabrication techniques, with the use of a high-strength, UV bonded, transparent adhesive from Delo Industrial Adhesives in Germany to cement the bricks together without the need for a more traditional mortar.” “Six to ten experts worked every day for a whole year in a place that bore more resemblance to a laboratory than

a construction site,” MVRDV adds. “Due to the sensitivity of the materials, an extremely high level of accuracy and craftsmanship was required and a technical development team was onsite throughout the process. Since this construction is the first of its kind, new construction methods and tools had to be utilised: from high-tech lasers and laboratory grade UV-lamps, to slightly lower-tech Dutch full-fat milk, which, with its low transparency, proved to be an ideal liquid to function as a reflective surface for the levelling of the first layer of bricks. Despite its delicate looks, strength tests by the Delft University

of Technology team proved that the glass-construction was in many ways stronger than concrete. The full-glass architrave, for instance, could withstand a force of up to 42.000 Newton; the equivalent to two full-sized SUVs.” Winy Maas is one of the three original co-founders of MVRDV. “Crystal Houses make space for a remarkable flagship store, respect the structure of the surroundings and bring a poetic innovation in glass construction,” says Maas. “It enables global brands to combine the overwhelming desire of transparency with a couleur locale, and modernity with heritage. It can thus be applied everywhere in our historic centres.” You can learn more about their incredible CHANEL renovation, and their longterm goals for Crystal Houses, by visiting their website here: www. goo.gl/1LUboS. ELLO sat down with YouTube sensation Amanda Steele. She signed her first contract at the mere age of 13 and has since amassed an enormous following on her YouTube channel and social media. Find out what her favourite Coachella outfit was and who her ultimate girl crush is!

BELLO: So you started your YouTube channel when you were 10 years old. When did you realize that your channel had become this huge global thing? AMANDA STEELE: When I as about 13 I signed with a network and that’s when I really saw that it was a whole world, that this could be my career and that there were so many other careers surrounding it. That’s also the year that I figured out YouTube, what people wanted to see – I was making a lot of content just around that time. I was seeing the impact that it had and I was being noticed more if I went to the mall or something. I realized it was pretty big! B: Do you have a particular structure when it comes to your YouTube videos or do you play it by ear? AS: I don’t have a specific upload date, I try to do Saturday’s but I kind of upload whenever I think it makes sense. I film once a month at the YouTube space, I just knock out all of my videos for the month then because it’s kind of hard for me to film all my videos on my own. B: So I saw you posted a few tweets about Coachella. Which weekend did you go to? AS: It was crazy, I went both weekends, which totally killed me. I’m like sick now recovering from it! I was even more sick after the first weekend so it was intense. But it was a great time #118 issue - BELLOmag.com

and being there with your friends and just listening to the music, it’s always great to get away. B: What was your favourite outfit that you wore to Coachella? AS: I wore this all denim look that I was obsessed with. It was this denim top, these long denim shorts and a denim jacket tied around my waist. It was all denim! B: If you could choose any anyone to do a YouTube video with you, who would it be? AS: There’s this stylist, Monica Rose, she styles all the Kardashian’s and a bunch of other people and I think she’s the person behind all of that so I think that’s someone I’d rather have make a video with because she knows about the fashion and I’d love to hear her view on things.

BELLO BUZZ: Quick Round Favourite song at the moment Rambo remix featuring The Weeknd Favourite talk show host? Ellen DeGeneres Favourite film? The Bling Ring

B: So I know you’ve signed up with WME IMG Models. How’s that been for you?

Girl crush?

AS: It’s really exciting! When I first went to New York to finally meet with them after I signed it was really great I had a bunch of meetings, I got to see the whole modeling world and kind of get thrown into that and I’ve been doing test shoots which is really awesome and also been auditioning for acting roles from WME. Nothing has really come out yet but we’re all just working together and figuring it out.

Tom Ford New Mexico

INSIDE TOM FORD’S EXQUISITE NEW MEXICO RANCH DESIGNED BY LEGENDARY JAPANESE ARCHITECT TADAO ANDO BY BRENT LAMBERT

F

or the most part, buying a home is the most expensive purchase of one’s life. You get the mortgage, get the keys, and then bam -- it’s moving day. But for most people, these homes are already designed far ahead of time by someone else -whether it’s a condo, a suburban home, or an old town house in the city, etc.

#118 issue - BELLOmag.com

44

For folks in a higher tax bracket, however, a new home can be an entirely original design project where the placement of every wall, door and window is decided and carefully considered by your own personal vision and the wisdom of a trusted architect. Such is the good fortune of Tom Ford -- a man with many homes scattered around the world, and for whom money really is no object when it comes to residential design. So when you have all the money in the world, who do you call when you want to build your own dream ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico? Who better than renowned, Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Ford’s sprawling and serene 24,000-acre ranch (photographed here by Guido Mocafico) is a jaw-dropping example of architectural restraint, harmonic materiality, and supreme masculine elegance.

45

May 2016 - BELLO

Architecture has long since been a passion for Tom Ford, having nearly become an architect after studying in the field during his youth in New York. After he built his fashion empire, it was time to bring one of his biggest dreams to life -- his own personal ranch in New Mexico. His first attempt at building his ranch began 15 years ago when he commissioned architect Alberto Campo to propose a design. That project, however, was rejected by local authorities, and the idea was scrapped. Fast forward ten years to 2010 and Ford rebooted his vision, this time bringing the legendary Ando on board. Ando’s signature bold yet minimal concrete massing, together with a rustic color palette, combine not only to turn the ranch’s design program into a built reality -- but also to frame the magnificent views of the landscape beyond.

#118 issue - BELLOmag.com

46

“If you spend time on our ranch or in the American West or anywhere in nature, all of a sudden, all the things you worry about all the time fade away,” says Ford. “That’s why one of the greatest problems with where we are culturally at this time is that we’ve all lost touch with the earth and that which is really important in the world.” Nature and the concept of home are one and the same for Ando as well. “Dwelling in a house is not only a functional issue, but also a spiritual one,” he says. The ranch was realized with the help of LA-based design-build firm Marmol-Radziner & Associates. Tom Ford is married to Richard Buckley, a journalist and former Editor-in-Chief of VOGUE Hommes International. The pair have been in a relationship since they first met in 1986, and together they have a son, Alexander John “Jack” Buckley Ford, who was born in September 2012. Throughout the year, Tom and his family spread their home time between their three residences in London, Los Angeles, and of course, their Santa Fe ranch. (All photos by Guido Mocafico) 47
