“The luster of luggage” BY: STEVEN CARVER
T
he world of globetrotting was only a dream a few decades ago. With the arrival of air travel, the gates were finally open to those who had always dreamed of going places father than their car could take them. It was a glamorous time, full of designer clad jetsetters with Goyard luggage and Louis Vuitton trunks, carrying their personal items from one continent to the next.

May 2016 - BELLO
When flights became accessible – at least in price – to everyone, flying by air lost its luster. People were smuggled into spaces like sardines, seats shrunk in size and jeans and t-shirts replaced suits and ties. Luggage also stopped sitting in first class when bulky nylon bags replaced leather carryalls. There is no need to carry something made of synthetics while crossing borders; accessories can always get an upgrade from coach. Based in London, Mark/Giusti devotes itself to producing handcrafted leather bags and accessories in Italy, unifying form and function, art and design – luxury all the way.

Taking global influences to heart while developing the line, design director Mark Farhat spent much of his life traveling from one continent to another. Born in Lebanon, Farhat lived his childhood years in Africa, was schooled in London (a masters in marketing management with a focus on luxury brands) and Milan (the Instituto Di Moda Burgo) and worked in United States with Capelli New York (a company that manufactures and markets on-trend private label and branded fashion products). With something for everyone, Mark/ Giusti collections offer wallets and laptop cases to carryalls and carryon luggage to the most discerning of
customers. Products are individually handmade by artisans with decades of experience and it shows. A high degree of attention is paid to the smallest of details: the touch of the full grain leather; subtle contrast top stitching; the smooth pull of a zipper that won’t tug; a “click” of a closing clasp; specifically designed interior compartments; complimentary organized bags for shirts and shoes; and linings based upon mosaics and architecture from the Byzantine era, dating back as early as the 6 century A.D. Want something exclusive? A bespoke service is designs and produces

custom-made bags for those craving a unique product. By choosing this service, a selection of materials and linings are offered, as well as the addition or removal of interior pockets, and more. Elements that make these products desirable for decades to come. Whether looking to the past or the future, it’s no wonder why Mark/Giusti names collections after such daydream-worthy concepts such as La Dolce Vita and The Gatsby. This takes luxury up a notch, and traveling in first class is as easy as carrying Mark/Giusti. 9

or as long as there have been different cultures, there have been those who have been inspired by them. More often than not, when fashion designers are in need of a novel idea, they look to other parts of the world. It should be no surprise that US designers are looking at the minimalist silhouettes of the east, just as Asia looks to the west for streetwear concepts. For Avellaneda, the feeling is that of Italy by way of Spain, or at least the Mediterranean. Founded in 2013 by Juan Avellaneda, the high end menswear label places a strong emphasis on using the finest fabrics as a basis for all of its collections. Think rich materials – leathers, fur, and cashmere – cut into classic menswear shapes, often with a twist. It takes traditional tailoring and softens it, while a warm and earthy palate adds spice to the mixture. Born and raised in Barcelona, the designer had a love of fashion from a young age and always yearned to create beautiful things; clothing being one of them. He studied creative management (with a specialty in Asiatic cultures) at the prestigious Central Saint Martins in London and freelanced at other fashion brands – frequently traveling between Madrid and Barcelona – before heading off on his own. Being a jetsetter, he needed to have something to wear that was comfortable yet cosmopolitan. Avellaneda’s peripatetic life had his schedule in frequent chaos – going from a plane to a meeting to a lunch/dinner and then drinks – and changing outfits between appointments wasn’t always possible. With necessity being the mother of invention, he knew there was a need for a menswear line that was upscale, yet relaxed.

AVELLENADA’S THINKING IS TO ASK WHY TRAVEL TO ANOTHER COUNTRY (SAY ITALIAN LEATHER WORKS OR SAVILE ROW TAILORING) TO PRODUCE A COLLECTION WHEN THE LOCAL TALENT IS UNSURPASSED IN HIS OWN BACKYARD?
It all starts with the materials. How they feel to the touch and how they drape on the form, are important parts of designing each collection. Being a fan of texture (linens, woolens, leather and especially suede), Avellaneda found that sourcing high quality materials can be difficult for a small brand. Purchasing fabrics from the same suppliers as top fashion houses, prices are reflected in the end product. Updating traditional – and sometimes stuffy – dress codes, the collection’s clothing requires a closer look to spot sartorial differences. A blazer has a softer shoulder, sweaters are made with thicker knits, pants have wider silhouettes, and distinctive buttons and trimmings are a small part of finishes. Being a fan of the double-breasted coat with a belt, Avellaneda realizes men need to be confident while wearing his line, but although clothes don’t make the man but they do help solidifying a persona. And with everything made in Spain by the best professionals in their field, there’s an element of pride – both nationalistic and of workmanship – that goes into every piece. Avellenada’s thinking is to ask why travel to another country (say Italian leather works or Savile Row tailoring) to produce a collection when the local talent is unsurpassed in his own backyard? No jet setting is required. #119 issue - BELLOmag.com

Our story, Free Bird, is about the liberation and evolution of a woman in the 70s, a time of change in so many ways. We follow her through six metaphorical looks, and within each one, a change in her behavior occurs, along with the colors and patterns, until she is absolutely free from any type of expected social conduct.

Years from now the world will probably see the arrival of The unauthorized Awkward Story, or something of the sort. The MTV comedy comes to a close this year after a five-season run. A rarity for many shows today—particularly for MTV. On a summer night in July in 2011, Awkward premiered to a network that hadn’t really ventured onto Scripted territory, besides an attempt earlier that year in January with the American adaptation of Bryan Elsley’s Skins. Shortly after Skins premiered, it generated buzz and controversy over the sexual content heavily included in the series. It might have been just a few years early for it’s American time. In the following months Awkward would premiere, drawing the same amount of buzz, but this time for its general realism and praise for central character Jenna Hamilton [Ashley Rickards] whose already unfavorable reputation is altered after she’s believed to have survived a suicide attempt. Beau Mirchoff at 22 years old, originated the role of Matty McKibben, a jock with the face of a model and a hidden heart of gold, and whose love affair with Jenna is just one in the story bag. In this Farewell interview, Mirchoff, now 27, looks back on his time at Palos Verdes High-school.
It’s been a little over five years since the show aired its very first episode. Now that we’re here, what comes to mind? Well, when we started out, as with any show, you don’t really know what’s going to happen. You go into it blindly and with high hopes. Fortunately enough for us we were able to keep going and keep making a good show. The fans were very supportive and fervent and its been a wonderful experience. What was it like stepping behind the camera this season final season to direct Girls Gone Viral? It was very stressful. I was very nervous, however I felt very much in my element. I was very prepared, so I was able to kind of take everything in stride. I definitely learned that I really like doing it, and that I want to do more, so I’m going to try my hand at that. Did you come across any challenges that you weren’t expecting to come across? There are just various things that arise in regards to various departments. Something won’t work, or this color looks strange, we have to change that. So, you’re always forced to be on your feet. Or something doesn’t look as good as you anticipated or maybe a line isn’t working. You also have to appease the creators and the show-runners. Which means you have integrity in your vision while still maintaining the tone and look of the show. With only four episode left till the finale, what can you tease? Everyone ends up together and there is a large event that takes place where everything is just put in line. There’s a reconciliation of some sort between Jenna and Matty, and I will say that Matty makes a grand romantic gesture. [Laughs]

Naturally since you’d never see the set again, did you take anything as memorabilia?
That’s a really interesting question. But I think it taught me that you have to make things work. There will be situations and things that you don’t agree with, but as an actor it’s your job to justify them. You have to make it matter, make it mean something to you. Like a relationship, it’s something you have to work out If you want to eat the fruit of your labor. In order to make it happen, you have to give your all to it.
I didn’t initially! I’m not the most sentimental of people, but my co-star Brett Davern, you could say, “borrowed” a couple Letterman’s jackets, and he gave me one of those. So I do have something now, thanks to Brett’s borrowing. [Laughs] What’s the most recent awkward encounter you’ve had? I have a lot of awkward encounters, you should know that.. But recently, I went on an audition, and I read for a dramatic part—a part I really wanted, and it went really well. At least it’s what I was thinking at the moment. Afterwards the casting people laughed a little bit. But it’s not a comedy! I went with it, thought it was a little strange. Then I walk out on the sidewalk, headed towards my car and I feel a draft, and I look down. I realized that my fly was open—and it was laundry day. If awkward were a relationship, what did it teach you? #119 issue - BELLOmag.com

The Arctic Experience with
CREATED AND WRITTEN BY JON & MARK NORRIS
I
ts becoming more and more popular for us as people of all ages to see the world, and the vastness of its offering. We recently took a trip to a part of the world that rarely sees the light of day during the winter – Kiruna, Sweden. The harsh arctic environment makes for an adventure that is unforgettable to us as nonlocals, but also leaves us with a special need for serious adventure clothing, that keeps you warm, makes you feel comfortable and lives to tell the story at the end of it – Jack Wolfskin provided us with just that.
The first day was spent XC-Skiing – in this part of the world, you’ll find most locals own at least two pairs of XC ski’s – some athletes favour it as it really does give an all-round workout, as well as working your lungs hard, too. That aside, it’s a brilliant way to get off the beaten track and experience the Arctic wilderness, quite like no other, stopping for ‘fika’ along the way – Swedish, for coffee and a cake. The guide set-up a wooden fire, we drank some warm Lingonberry Juice #119 issue - BELLOmag.com
and tried some traditional Swedish sausage, sliced and roasted, on the end of a wooden branch over the fire – as majestic as you could ever imagine a morning to be. After that, the guide left us to it as we skied back across the Torne River alone – which was a little ambitious, considering the exposed minus 40 temperatures out on the river plain. We used our afternoon to explore the artistic nature of each room within The Ice Hotel for which we stayed.
The next day, we were taken out by a pack of 10 dogs, led by one male and one female. In our pack was an eighth month old puppy, who was undertaking his only exercise for the day, along with 2 other females, and 6 other males Huskies. Sam, one of the excellent guides, told us that each dog will eat the equivalent to 10 Big Mac’s a day when running for around 80-100km in training – quite the diet! Riding through the open wilderness, with clear blue skies, lit up by the 46
orange-like sunset made for a magical experience, one that was made so very pleasant by our texapore 3 in 1 waterproof’s and century hardshell parka’s from Jack Wolfskin. That evening, our final night in the arctic circle, all layered up, we headed out, each with our own Snowmobile, and into the midnight woods we went, the air as cold as we could have ever imagined, and the sky as clear and crisp as we had ever hoped for – the aim, to see the northern lights! It took us an hour or so with intermittent stops along the way, to reach the halfway hut, Camp Alta, which was being prepared by the lovely assistant guide who had travelled out by herself to light the open fire, and cook our three 47
course meal – potato and leek homemade soup, reindeer stew and a chocolate fondant to finish, alongside roasted coffee and hot Lingonberry juice. On a quest to see the Aurora Borealis, we were told by our guide that the best time to see the lights in Kiruna was between 21:00 – 00:00hrs. That being said, we set off down the river on our snowmobiles and into the woods, and stopped around 10-15 minutes into the ride, turned the engines off and stood in total silence looking up to the sky with total amazement, as we watched the glistening green sways of light riding across the midnight sky, as if we were in the middle of an animated movie, waiting for the wolves to start their howling – words cannot do the experience justice.
Arriving back at the hotel at gone 23:00hrs, on what can only be described as cloud nine, we parked up our machine and headed into the world famous Ice Bar for a celebratory Swedish lager out of ‘glasses’ made from 100% Torne River ice. Rest assured though, we slept well that night. Our trip was a magical experience, but crucially, made all the more comfortable and bearable with the Jack Wolfskin equipment and clothing – it quite simply wouldn’t have been possible without them and reporting back with our experience, we are 100% satisfied and are totally sure that you will be too, so remember, Jack Wolfskin are very much at home, outdoors – they certainly make you feel that way too!
