A Moment with

Michael Henry

M

BY FABIO FERNANDEZ

eet Michael Henry, a 29 year old comedic Writer and Actor in Los Angeles blowing up the scene with his viral Youtube videos. Bello got the chance to meet with Michael to find out what’s behind the man in the videos and what makes it all come together. If you haven’t seen his videos, we suggest you start with his most current creation titled, “in a world where straight people talk like gays”. We promise it won’t disappoint. After seeing it in a loop, we couldn’t stop binging on all his videos and in the end it left us wanting more. So we sat down and asked Michael..

BELLO: What made you start acting?

B: What made you decide to start vlogging on youtube?

MICHALE HENRY: I wanted attention. Haha. I’m the oldest of three and With my parents attention on my siblings I had to ham it up in order to get the attention back on me. It worked sometimes.

-I decided to take charge of my career. I had always thought of my acting career as this fragile thing that was dependent on other people’s decisions but I then thought, no. I can create my own content that has my own point of view and I can actually showcase myself the way i want to be seen.

B: How long have you been acting? -Forever, I started doing plays in high school, then I did some plays in NYC, and then I decided to move to Los Angeles and study improv and sketch comedy at The Second City and The Groundlings. Now I create my own content on YouTube. B: What keeps you in the industry? -It keeps me driven. I want to be as successful as I can be and I keep setting the bar higher for myself. B: Did you always want to act? If so, why comedy? -For sure. I always loved making my neighbors play “Pretty Pretty Princess” with me and pretend we had rich boyfriends that where coming to pick us up to go to the mall. Haha. And as for comedy, making people laugh just makes me laugh. i’ll catch myself making a joke and i laugh more than anyone else. so maybe I just do comedy for my own benefit. lol #120 issue - BELLOmag.com

B: How has the reaction been since your first video? -The reaction has been amazing. I put my first video up last year and since then I’ve grown so much in my writing, acting and producing. I’ve sharpened my point of view and people have really taken notice. I love having people dissect my videos and tell me what they are really about. lol. B: What advice would you give to those interested in starting Acting? -I would say you have to let yourself fail. You have to understand that you’re going to fail at it sometimes but it’s a fact that you’re going to succeed as well. I feel like the fear of failing holds a lot of actors back from putting themselves out there and they end up doing nothing and just waiting. Be as fearless as possible, be yourself, work at it all the time and have fun. this is fun. B: What project was your favorite to work on?

- I really loved working on my “Gay Chicken” video. I mean, watching two men oil themselves up and kiss, is a great day of work in my opinion. But I also love making my “Driving in the car with your mother” video. Everything about it was very natural and organic. I also love forcing my roommate Katie to be in my videos even though she’s not an actor. it tortures her and that makes me laugh. B: Do you consider yourself a gay actor? -I do. I’m proud to be who I am. And to feel the Gay community embrace my work makes me so happy. B: Hobbies? -Eating. I looooooove to eat. Carbs are a big hobby of mine. Pizza, pasta, sandwiches! I’m eating Pizza right now. My eyes glimmer when I try a new restaurant. B: What’s it like to be an actor in LA? Or what’s it like to be a comedic actor in LA? -Being a comedic actor in LA is great. The comedy community is big but tight. Everyone knows everyone for the most part and if we don’t, we’re at least Facebook friends. Haha. So we’re all very supportive. Especially the gay comedians. We all celebrate each others work. 6

B: Are all the people in your videos close friends/fellow actors?

they’re just being honest, and themselves.

-Yeah pretty much, I love my friends. I’m so lucky to know so many talented people. I love to work with people who crack me up. But I also love filming with people who aren’t actors because

B: How do you feel about all the attenSo unless you’re under a rock, go to tion you’re receiving from you work? Youtube and watch for yourself. Thank -It’s a dream come true. To know that you Michael for a fun time and letting I’m making people laugh that I haven’t us get to know you.

personally met before is surreal to me. Reading the comments on some of my videos seriously makes me smile.

Down to Earth from Perth. Our time with the refreshingly real actress, Hanna Mangan Lawrence WORDS BY JOSH BROWN PHOTOS BY SOSA + ART

F

ive hours, six wardrobe changes, and a photo shoot later— Hanna sat down to talk with me completely unflustered and cheery. This Australian actress was full of surprises, humor, and such a raw personality that made for good laughs and interesting insight to a young actress’s world.

Seated next to a waiting salad…she shared these things about her life, relationship to Chris Wood, her family, and her “love-hate” relationship with acting. Was acting always your first love? I went to a performing arts Highschool in Sydney but I wasn’t like “Yeah I want to be an actor”. I guess I didn’t really think about it until I was 14. Everyone always told me I was such a performer and that “you’re gonna be an actor-you’re gonna be an actor” but I was also doing gymnastics at the time and I was like “What? No! I’m gonna be a gymnast, an Olympic gymnast!” Pausing for a laugh she then says… ...But I guess obviously that’s probably harder. So I never did that. I never became an Olympian. So now I’m an actor. So How did it happen? Was it accidental? Well, I told my mom I wanted to get an agent and try being an actor but she said it’s too hard and didn’t really want me to do it. But my parents are seperated, so then I went to my dad’s house and said “Dad, I want to get an agent”. We both laugh hysterically Wow, you literally did the “Mom says no, so now ask dad” move Literally, I played them, used that to my advantage and he said cool so I looked in the yellow pages found an obscure listing called “kidz in the biz” or something like that and I went to audition and things just sort of happened from there. Safe to say they’re both cool with the whole acting thing now? Yeah. They like it now haha! 31

So first I admit, I stalked your instagram Perfect, I’m that person too--I stalk too. Well, I saw your relationship with Chris, and a lot of people consider you to be couple goals. So I know they want to know...when did you first fall for Chris and why? (Laughing shyly) Well, I don’t know about people considering us couple goals. We just became really good friends--obviously we met on containment. And we were just goofballs together. It’s nice to always spend time with your best friend. Now the real question: Why would you say he fell for you? The Australian accent.Just the accent. That’s it. That’s what got him. Everything else about me he was just like “Oh Dear”. You have a fairly new puppy and I’m jealous but I also think you posted that he “did shit on your carpet for mother’s day”. Oh Yeah. He just shit on my rug. This huge shit. He hadn’t had an accident in a while. So he came to me with a strange look on his face...on Mother’s Day...like a “look what I did” face. And I was just like oh gosh, happy mother’s day to me. Do people yell out your character name from projects in public when they see you? Umm Sometimes. Like in public people would yell “Seppia” from Spartacus. Not for containment yet. Ever respond back in character? No but wow--I totally should! What a great idea! It would be less awkward-spring it back on them.

I saw your nephew arrived in challenging circumstances (my brother was also born premature) and you posted the sweetest message about that time period. Only if I’m not intruding. What was that like? What’s really interesting is that when it happened it was initially so traumatizing because we had never heard of a baby been born three months early and my initial response was oh no he’s not going to be fully formed. But Patrick has so much life and he was in the hospital for ages but it’s amazing to see how he’s grown. What’s also is interesting is hearing you say your brother was also premature because by my putting it out there so many people reached out and told me about how this happened to their family as well and this is a common thing.I feel like had my sister and I known that is so common that it would have been a lot less daunting for us. Yes some babies are born at 28 weeks but with modern science we help them get through it. And you were able to spend almost everyday with them early on thanks to shoot location right? Yes. It was amazing. Because a week after Patrick’s birth my shoot location moved to Australia and the shoot gave me a two bedroom place there. So she was able to stay with me and be a bit more relaxed. She was in with Patrick everyday but I think just being able to have the downtime at the apartment and her own kitchen really helped. So that was nice. So the shoot location was really...I can’t think of the word… Serendipitous? Exactly Have you had anyone reach out to you about being inspired by you? Do you feel some sort of responsibility there? May 2016 - BELLO

Yes some really lovely people have reached out. Telling me it’s wonderful to see a young girl acting and following her dreams and that it inspires them. So I think anyone in the media does have some sort of responsibilities to be aware of. You have gotten to a place where so many aspire to be. What would your advice be to those who are about to quit? I think it would be pretty standard. That you just have to keep going. Like anyone, I have moments where I’m like “Will this actually work--will I pull this off--what happens in ten years if there’s nothing for me to do.” But I think that just knowing life’s a journey and you’ll end up where you need to be by exploring possibilities and riding the waves is what makes it easier. Like on instagram there is this idealized view into someone’s world. Everyday I get turned down and rejected from auditions. I get frequently put down and have to pick myself back up (laughs) but I don’t post those moments about my really SHIT audition. But we all have ebbs and flows. The hardest thing about being an actress? Not knowing. You never know where the next job is coming from so that’s a challenge in and of itself. And we like to be in control of our lives so that’s tough. I have this mentor, an Australian actress, Kerry Armstrong. She told me try to keep one thing in your life as a constant everyday. I’d like to say that I got up every day and did yoga but I don’t. And the environment is always changing. I could be in a trailer, an apartment, a different country. So without fail, everyday I make my bed. And it sounds so little but it keeps me sane. (laughing) I know I’m going to sleep and I know I’m waking up so I can at least control making my bed. The easiest about being an actress? I wouldn’t say easy is the word. I’d say it’s more of my passion taking over— that I really love what I do. I’m not stuck in a job where I wish I were doing something else. I’m doing what I want to so I’m just grateful. Sometimes I hate that I love doing it so much.

Elaborate on that. What do you mean you hate that you love it? What does that mean? Well, it’s frustrating when you can’t do something the way you envisioned it as far as acting. I always wish I had a degree and was just a doctor. Mind you, I think I’ve idealized this but I would enjoy the aspect of just being a doctor and no one questions that. With acting, yes, you can still get a degree but you still constantly question if you’re “enough” or if you’re even good at it. There’s no real tangible scale. There’s no way in your heart that you can know you’re good. I’m not sure that makes sense. It makes perfect sense. You can have people around you saying the performance is perfect but you know it didn’t come out the way you envisioned it and only you know that. You rehearsed it differently and then you see it on screen and it’s different from what you felt when you were in the scene. The challenge of that I’m sure is the love hate aspect. As you said, you make an appointment with a doctor, a doctor will be there, a doctor will ask certain questions. Whereas you can do a MILLION different things with a role. And, somebody else would do a MILLION different things than you with that role so I can understand how it’s challenging to gauge if you’re making the right choices. I mean, yeah. So incredibly well put. You look at the pages in front of you and you can do it so many different ways. A doctor, they perform the operation, and hopefully they DON’T do the operation a hundred different ways each time. Hopefully there’s just ONE way and they’re perfect at it. That sounds nice (laughing). What kind of character would you most like to play in the future? I love drama and the raw emotion. But I think I would like to just play an action woman you know? I want to kick some doors down. I have this image of me half-way between Tarzan and half way between Lara Croft. Yeah I really like that!

Upthewith Johnsons!

Kenya Barris’ ABC comedy Blackish about a well-off African American family living in a predonminately white neighborhood is the type of comedy that you didn’t realize was needed until it’s here. Turning racial jokes, stereotypes and misconceptions and discussing them in the right way-the good way--the funny way. Best of all, it’s seen through the unique eye of the Johnson Family. With hollywood veterans and comedic powerhouses like Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson and Jenifer Lewis as regulars, Blackish is one show that is sure to have you laughing out loud again. All it takes is a word from scene stealer Yara Shahidi as Zoe Johnson to remember Hilary Banks and her own family On The Fresh Prince of Belair. Perhaps the Johnsons are the new Banks’?

How is your college search going so far? Any campus must haves? The college search has just begun! Right now I am really open minded, I love a diverse campus in all aspects of the word. Growing up in LA, I definitely want access to a city, while still having a slightly closed campus. I’m a junior and definitely want to go to college to study sociology, but I also have a full time job. Fortunately, Kenya Barris and Jonathan Groff (creator &show runner) both know how important school is to me, so I’m looking at programs that allow for that flexibility to continue playing Zoey. Have you visited any schools yet? I’ve visited Harvard, Spelman, Howard, Columbia, and want to look at Georgetown, Brown (my TV mama’s alma matter), UCLA, and NYU! You attend the Dwight School. Has it been difficult to manage a rigorous course load while working on set? The Dwight School has allowed me to take the challenging classes that I want, while maintaining the level of flexibility that my schedule needs. My teachers, my tutor on set, and my parents, all really support me, nonetheless, it is a challenging juggling act. It requires sitting down and doing homework after 10 1/2 hour days and a full weekend of schooling. Luckily, I love my job and I love to learn so the work is worth it. In a Freaky Friday game—Who would you switch places with for a day? Hmm, this is an interesting one. I would have to say Professor X,because I am a Marvel comic book lover and Professor X has such a fascinating backstory and the parallels between his character and figureheads of the Civil Rights Movement are intriguing.

Zoey is hilarious—what’s your favorite in character moment? I have so much fun escaping into the world of Zoey; in many ways she is my complete opposite, while we do have some similarities. My favorite moments are when I have scenes with my parents and exploring that relationship. Moments like in the episode Daddy’s Day, when I go head to head against my father who has taken my friend as his new protege were so much fun to shoot. What are 2 things you can’t live without these days? Aside from the essential family, water, food, shelter, and clothes… Podcasts and chocolate are integral parts of my day. I thought it was funny how you and Marcus seemed like twins on set. Do you guys get that a lot? - We are basically fraternal twins and a little more than a month apart in real life! What’s funny is that even thought he is older, I still assume the role of older sister for everyone (I think it’s innate because I have two younger brothers). I have introduced him to Hamilton and we always have intellectual conversations ranging from: whether Loki is really a bad guy, to discussing Machiavelli’s “The Prince”. #120 issue - BELLOmag.com

You’ve been working with the Sandals Foundation and recently you were in Jamaica helping some children working with the kids directly? It’s been great. (It is such an honor them naming me as their first Youth Advocate Ambassador) I visited a makeshift school the Sandals Foundation is currently raising resources to rebuild. Because many of the parents do not have the means transport their children outside of the community, so a new structure is needed to be built locally. I’m hoping that many people will see what I’ve been up to in Jamaica and it will inspire them to donate. Just a little bit creates a big impact. It helps the children. I feel that every child has the capability to become the next great person who may change the world. Every child deserves to rise to their fullest potential through proper education. Junior gets into the craziest moods. What’s your favorite moment of his? My favorite Junior moment has to be the episode “The Dozens.” I thought it was a very interesting turn in his personality from being this nerdy kid, who you suspect might be getting bullied on. Well, actually is getting bullied on—into the bully. Then seeing his realization that maybe this is not the right thing to do.

What was it like slipping into the 70s for the Good-timed themed season finale? Getting to play JJ walker, such an iconic character was amazing. Super cool, super cool. It’s crazy, because I’m the one that gets him to bring him to life in television for the 21st century. Right now, I can’t even believe it. You’re a known comic-book fan, what’d you think of the latest Marvel addition? I watched Captain America: Civil War with my mother for Mother’s day, because she’s also a comic book fan and she loves superheroes, so that was a lot of fun. It was definitely a bit crazy because I like the character of Iron Man, but watching the movie, I also agreed with Captain America, on how he wanted the Avengers to stay a private organization so that they could do the good that they thought. So it was a confusing moment for me, trying to side with the two, but it was fantastic—and the new spiderman was amazing. 3 things I couldn’t live without? My family. Bacon, a good book.

You’re obsessed with all things History. Which particular time period interests you, and why? History has always been my obsession ever since my Gramps introduced me to Greek Mythology. I am currently finishing up AP World History and I have to say that I have been really engrossed in learning more about World War I-II and the Cold War, because it was a paradigm shift for society in methods of warfare, ideology, and international relations. So much of our modern day is a direct result of the events of the 1900’s.

Marsai Martin How do you get into Dianne mode once you’re on set? I think what can Marsai not do in real life. Marsai can’t roll her eyes, she can’t ignore her parents or be sassy or mean. So I take all that stuff that Marsai doesn’t do—and put it into my Dianne. What do you think it would be like if you actually had a twin in real life? Well, I don’t have any siblings yet. But I think it could be cool if I had a girl identical twin, so we could joke around and play Barbie. I have a little sister on the way in September, which is going to be really cool, but she’ll be really little and I’ll still be 11. So no twin stuff going on there. You’re from Texas which is super cool but so different from LA. How do you like Los Angeles? I love LA, I like Disneyland, and all the mountains and the palm trees. It’s really pretty, just different than Texas. I always visit though, so I don’t miss it too much. Dianne’s always rocking different hairstyles on the show. Do you have any say in how she wears her hair? Well, I can’t say I want a mohawk or a Blonde weave. But I do get to pick some styles that fit her character. They do cool stuff like ponytails and braids. Dianne’s about seven or eight so we keep it very pretty. But the more seasons we get, you might see DiDianne always surprises me with what she says. What’re your favorite Dianne getting older and trying anne moments? even more new hairstyles, we’ll I think the moments with Charlie are my favorite. It’s really funny when a have to see. grown man is scared of a little girl. That’s really fun and I get to use my Inner Diane a lot in those scenes. #120 issue - BELLOmag.com 50

Right now that ones that come to mind are Blame it on the boogie, Heartbreak Hotel and Ease on The Down, from The Wiz. Clearly you’re a music-head. Who are you listening to these days? Kendrick Lamar, Drake. Kendrick Lamar’s unmastered Untitled album is really good. I’m also really into Drake’s new album views. Oldschool, I like Stevie Wonder, The O’Jays. You know, some of those guys into Drake’s new album Views. Old-school, I like Stevie Wonder, The O’Jays. You know, some of those guys. What’s one thing or two things you can’t live without right now? First of all, I could not live without basketball. Then probably video games. Besides being in the NBA I’d love to be a video game designer. I think that’d be really cool.

JOHNSON/ EVANS! What was it like playing Michael Evans on The Good Times themed finale? That was really fun. It was awesome, having my dad tell me that’s how people really dressed back then. He thought it was really funny and thought it looked so real—like we were actually in a good times episode. It made me kind of get to know what it was like to live a long time ago.
