EDITOR’S

note,

JUNE, 6, 2016

So much is happening and so much is always going on... We are always in search of change, and the best kind of change always finds its way to us. This month, we finally have a bit of amazing change! We have a music cover, which we havent done in quite a long time! We have the mega music duo, THE CHAINSMOKERS! Hanging with the boys at the Avalon Hollywood, we got to know 2 great guys who happen to be uber talented and on an extremely quick rise to mega fame. I was able to watch them perform at Coachella, so sitting with them in a more intimae setting without screaming fans and lazer lights shooting from every direction, defnintely put me in a moment of appreciation. Hope you love this issue as much as we do. Please send us any requests by always tagging us @BELLOmag. Always,

Leslie Alejandro, Executive Director

“Couture coffee table books” BY: STEVEN CARVER

very few years, large-format books launched to coincide with momentous milestones. The bigger the occasion, the bigger the book. Designed to be devoured in one sitting, they’re meant to be placed on a coffee table rather than sit on a shelf. Filled with sumptuous images, they make a statement on each page. It is here that iconic fashion houses shine.

Taking pen to paper and thread to fabric, the end result is visually striking garments that turn heads, on and off the runway. And while not all are celebrating an anniversary, these tomes exist to commemorate talented individuals who work – and have worked – for world renowned maisons. Being known as the largest luxury brand in the world, Louis Vuitton has to stand apart from its contemporaries by staying one step ahead, especially when it comes to its visuals. The windows of Louis Vuitton’s storefronts are magnetic. Typically featuring an element of movement – relevant for a brand known for its globetrotting ways – they draw crowds, with high-end fashion and accessories, and sets that can include anything from roller coasters to brightly colored hot-air balloons. #123 issue - BELLOmag.com

work in the ateliers, the runway shows and social events, and the celebrity clients who have worn the fashions. Originally published on the maison’s 60th anniversary, this updated edition unveils Dior’s designs from the beginning to today, with texts by fashion historian Farid Chenoune and original photography by Laziz Hamani. Featuring more than 150 of the house’s haute couture creations, the tome also showcases stunning photographs of celebrity models by the greatest fashion photographers of the times, from Richard Avedon to Patrick Demarchelier, plus a complete chronology of the house’s collections and milestones. With books such as these on display, it’s time to upgrade the coffee table. (Images all courtesy of Assouline)

Louis Vuitton Windows opens with an introduction by The New York Times fashion director and critic Vanessa Friedman, and features the vitrines of Faye McLeod and Ansel Thompson, presented as artful installations in a hand-bound oversize Ultimate Collection edition – capturing the creative world of Louis Vuitton. There is no other fashion house that personifies Italian exuberance with French sophistication than the one of Valentino. Since 2008, the renowned Italian fashion house has been anchored by creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli; two distinct personalities and design viewpoints that have taken the established maison to a more modern, yet still feminine, aesthetic. In Valentino: Mirabilia Romae, Chiuri and Piccioli reflect on their inspirations (one being the romantic city of Rome, Italy), and look at the way the city blends ancient and modern, pagan and baroque, historic buildings and contemporary lifestyle – much like their current philosophy of the revitalized house of Valentino. Page after page, it’s easy to see how those ideas are continually interpreted by the design at their seasonal runway presentations. Of all the great Parisian couture houses, Dior is perhaps the most famous and prestigious in the world and Christian Dior recounts the legacy of the house since its start in 1947 through the contributions of each creative director, the anonymous petites mains who 7

T

his year two guys that have been at it for a while broke into the the music scene with their hit song ‘Roses,’ cementing their status as one of the year’s favorite and breakout Acts. The Chainsmokers, made up of 26-year-old Andrew Taggart and 31-year-old Alex Pall are the new cool kids in town, with just enough beat and melody game to take over an industry.

I feel like you guys have been in the game for a bit now. but just recently you’ve been everywhere. What do you think was the turning point, or shift for you guys in the past year or so? Drew: We found our sound this year. It’s a sound that genuinely and inherently who we are, and everyone has responded to it positively, which is really what you wasn’t as an artist. You’re doing you, and everyone’s down with it. How would you describe that sound if you had to? Drew: Our music’s really gratifying. It’s honestly a collage of all our favorite artists. We’re big music fans and I’ve gone through extreme phases of different bands and genres that we’ve been into, and I feel like now our music is a mix of all of that. Roses is amazing. can you take me back to producing the song? Drew: Roses—Alex found Liz on Roses and we sent her a demo for her to write on. That Demo became Water Bed. We changed some of the words that she had written, to fit this new beat that ended up being the beat for Roses. We just jammed out for like eight hours and recorded everything. Starting with her verse, to just my beat, to the entire vocal recording, the entire production all in one bit. How about Let me down? Another hit of yours? Drew: For Don’t let me down, my friend gave me this. We were playing with it and wanted to write a drift that. We did a session with our really good friend Emily Warren who we’ve done a bit of records with now. Her friend Scott Harris who is an incredible writer. The four of us just sat there and banged out the entire top line in one afternoon. You guys have been working on some new music. What can you tease? 41

Drew: It’s going to be a lot more personable. The content of the songs are more specifically about us. I feel like the songs that we’ve written in the past have been about us, but they’re bored and they can be about a lot of people. Roses was a bit specific because, we We could waste the night with an old film Smoke a little weed on the couch in the backroom. We wanted to talk about a great moment, and something that we care about. but going forward, they are definitely about us. The next song, I’m singing on, and I wrote with my buddy Sean Frank, and it’s about sleeping with your ex girlfriend. We wanted to write a song about a sex scene that’s almost unsexy because you know the person so well, and all of their flaws. But also knowing in the back of your head, everything that sucks about them. Can you guys take me back a bit to how you met? Drew: We just met through our manager, it’s not the most exciting story. He was finishing school, and I was doing in New York, and neither thing was super successful by any means. So it was a an opportunity to kind of meet up and txt something new. We’re really enthusiastic about Dance Music and the scene. We thought we could get in there and be apart of it, and it’s been pretty cool. I feel like your music is very dancey, but it’s also the type of stuff you hear come on while you’re getting ready.. Alex: We call it classic EDM now. David Guetta, the heyday. Swedish House mafia, all that sound was so sick. It was very European. It was really exciting for us, and that’s what we thought our angle was. You know, bringing it to the Americans scene. I think we play a lot of dance and music festivals, and so many of our homies are Dance Music guys, because it seems like the best avenue to make a name for yourself as a producer. You don’t see Hip-hop producers playing festivals. I think that’s why Dance Music seems to be the pro-

ducer avenue. You asked earlier what our Aha moment was and that was it— We realized we loved Dance Music, but also grew up listening to Blink 182 and The Fugees. So Why aren’t these other genres that we love apart of our music? Roses was the first time we really opened up and basically said, Fuck it, lets just mix this with shit that we like. And we’re really fortunate that it did so well. You guys played Coachella this spring, which was a huge turnout. Any other memorable performances? Drew: All the festivals we’ve been performing at this past year have been really awesome. Coachella was great. Alex: Lollapalooza was a big turning point for us last year. I almost want to say Lollapalooza was better than Coachella, just because it was so surprising. That festival was a turning point in how our Festival sets were enjoyed and perceived. It was just more a of a surporse. With Coachella, we didn’t know how dope it was going to be—but we put a lot of time and money into that show. Lollapalooza was like, we’re going to show up and do what we do, and it showed up to be a really big moment for us. What bands are currently on your rotation? Drew: I’m really into Alabama shakes. Right now I’m really into the old Phoenix Albums. There’s not a a lot of indie rock that I’m into right now. I love Phoenix, and Wolfgang Amedeus the most. I’ve been a fan of them forever, since like 2005 when I heard them on The OC again. So i’m kind of going back and listening to that If you guys had to describe this past year in a past sentence how would you? Alex: Two dudes having fun. June 2016 - BELLO

Precision crafted performance BY: STEVEN CARVER

ery few things get better with age. For the automotive world, an introduction of technical advancements can seem dated even after a few short years. With the debut of the Acura NSX in 1990, its cutting-edge design and innovative technology provided exotic car performance for drivers in the real world. Building on the foundational concepts of the original NSX, the 2017 Acura NSX evolves its supercar DNA with next-generation technologies to create a New Sports eXperience.

As with many supercars, the magic starts with its underpinnings. Among the many innovations is Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (Sport Hybrid SH-AWD); a first-of-itskind technology in the supercar realm. Sport Hybrid SH-AWD utilizes electric motors to assist acceleration, braking and cornering, which amplifies the capabilities of the driver, while elevating the dynamic experience in every driving situation.

The result is a total of 573 hp and 476 lb.-ft. that propels the NSX from 0-to-60 mph in approximately three seconds. The NSX’s chassis combines elevates the previous car’s driving experience

with an all-aluminum multi-link front and rear suspension systems – augmented by third-generation active magnetorheological (MR) dampers and a dualpinion variable-ratio electric power steering (EPS) system – mounted directly

Under the skin lies an all-new 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged midmounted V6 engine paired with an all-new 9-speed dual-clutch transmission (9DCT) and Direct Drive Motor (operating as a generator, maintaining the charge of the hybrid batteries which support the demands of the driver) that supplements the engine with instant torque response. #123 issue - BELLOmag.com

(without subframes) to the ultra-rigid space frame. Deceleration capability is also enhanced with a next-generation electro-mechanical super sports braking system (vented disc with Brembo aluminum mono block calipers and iron rotors, or optional carbon ceramic rotors) with grippy tires (the base model is a Continental ContiSportContact 5 P, sized 245/35ZR-19 in front and 305/30ZR-20 in back, with optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2s) that combines the effectiveness of a mechanical (friction) braking system with a seamlessly integrated regenerative braking system. Sound complicated? Basically, it makes a fast car stop just as quickly.

The new Acura NSX package continues the design philosophy of the original NSX. The space-frame design (comprised mostly of lightweight aluminum) optimizes the packaging and layout of major vehicle systems – including the Sport Hybrid power unit (engine, Direct Drive Motor and 9DCT) and key hybrid components such as the Intelligent Power Unit (containing the lithium-ion battery pack) – to lower the center of gravity, centralize the mass of the vehicle and achieve desired weight distribution for optimal handling. With a wide stance and long wheelbase, the design moves beyond the curvy original and wraps the car with sharp creases, leading with Acura’s

signature multi-beam headlights and V-shaped grille, taillights that resemble a superhero mask, and a “total airflow management” to give the NSX superlative aerodynamics while providing effective and efficient thermal management required for its hybrid power unit. The cutting edge design details continue inside the NSX, as well. From the intuitive instrumentation and simple control layout, the center console has been designed to minimize driving distractions and uses its “simple sports interface” to let the driver go in full electric mode in addition to standard modes (Sport, Sport +, Track, Quiet). Switches are just a flick away, ideal to keep most of the attention on the road. Developed through extensive testing and pressure mapping measurements, these seats provide the torso and thigh bolstering needed in a high-limit vehicle and are covered in leather and Alcantara for the perfect combination of support, comfort, and ease of ingress-egress. With seating such as this, chances are very few people will want to leave them. With its debut over 25 years ago, the original Acura NSX changed the sports car world by combining performance, polish and poise, and the 2017 edition will take it to another level.
