Bello Behind The Scenes The Side of Hollywood That Gives Back: On Location With “The Starving Artist Project”
I
t was 10am and I arrived at the doorstep of what looked like your every day, run of the mill, two story, suburban—Los Angeles home. I can tell you, all of the “ordinary” quickly disappeared when they opened the front door. stylists, assistants, and editors were all coming together—preparing the The SAP house for the arrival of well, you guessed it—starving artists. They move like a school of fish in an uninterrupted unison. It was pretty remarkable to watch. These highly regarded industry professionals were simply there to help and give back to the performer community. The creators and supporters of The SAP have an uncomplicated vision to provide world-class industry support to passionate artists who are struggling financially or just starting out. With some of the top professionals charging $600 a headshot session—many a starving artist finds semi annual renewal of his or her headshots to be a very heavy financial burden. The SAP founder and renowned Getty Images photographer, Michael Bezjian, along with his team had a vision to provide multiple headshot/ portrait sessions free of charge to the passionate artist—including make up and wardrobe.
Through the help of Getty Image photographers and industry professionals at The Starving Artists Project, up-andcoming talents can experience a professional photo-shoot including hair and makeup with high quality press portraits at no cost to the performer. Taking two steps inside—I found myself amidst Hollywood prop cathedral chairs, over stuffed wardrobe racks, pinball machines, shelves lined with bedazzled slippers, rubber machine guns, and an infectiously curious and creative energy. (Please see all attached photos) It was a lot to take in. A little bit Narnia like… Effortlessly swimming around all these scattered trinkets were the individuals that make The Starving Artist Project what it is as an organization. The volunteer make-up teams, photographers, #126 issue - BELLOmag.com

His focus is trained on the stars you and I don’t really know yet—the quintessential starving artist. Only real requirement of you—the artist—is that you possess a true passion for your craft and The SAP will then trade you their time and expertise. Their well-orchestrated movement made more sense to me when I learned that they are two years into existence and shoot 15-20 headshot sessions on any given shoot day. Surely there was a lot of trial and error that got them to this seamless point. Or maybe they’re just so good that it’s beyond my realm of understanding?
“I’ve been in so many different circumstances and seen so many different walks of life and from those experiences and watching other people’s experiences I’ve always wanted to understand what others are going through. With my art I’m able to bring voice to that. By playing different characters I’m able to give voice to them—I can channel them.”
What made you want to be a part of the Starving Artist Project? “Well I heard of it from my friend Jimmy (Akingbola) and I just think it’s brilliant and I would have loved something like this when I was beginning so if I can help in any way I will.” -Melanie Liburd (DARK TER-GAME OF THRONES)
MAT-
-Gabrielle Walsh (VAMPIRE DIARIES/PARANORMAL ACTIVITY)
Either way, it’s working and what the people of The SAP are providing for starving artists is ironically, priceless. What’s been the driving force for you as a Human Being to give your time—your energy—all this effort into what is largely a philanthropic endeavor filled with all kinds of unique stress? “Because I’ve always wanted to love photography. I realized that as much as you love something—you have to actually create real change in what you do in order to fall in love with it again and again and again. So being able to come full circle and take care of these starving artists types who actually supported ME when I was just starting out as a photographer allows me that opportunity—to fall in love with photography again by helping them”. -Founder of The SAP, Michael Bezjian
What made you want to be a part of the Starving Artist Project?
Your advice on how a starving artist keeps their passion alive? “Bloody minded stubborn determination--there’s honor and valor in trying and I would rather die trying than die not.”
“Supporting The SAP made total sense because myself and my company TriForce Creative Network (www.thetcn. com) also whole heartedly believe in supporting creatives and helping them move their careers forward. After seeing the amazing work that Michael does with The SAP I knew I had to be involved in such a great cause that is free to artists.” Jimmy Akingbola (Arrow)
-Ruth Connell (SUPERNATURAL)
And boy does that love show! This project truly is a labor of love for all of those involved. On this particular shoot day, more well-known and established artists lent their social media platforms and likenesses to promote The SAP cause. Covered in dirt, ripped clothes, and signs pleading for acting opportunities—these actors spent the day shooting to promote the cause and give back to their industry. I had a chance to briefly sit with some of them and hear some of their thoughts… What drives your passion? Why do you want to act? 7

One City, Two Continents, One Magical Experience WRITTEN AND CREATED BY JON & MARK NORRIS
Our trip to Istanbul gave us one of those moments, the one that you just wanted to carry on and on and on and never end – welcome to a very special place to stay in a magical European city, the W Istanbul. We arrived into Istanbul Atatürk Airport on a lovely Friday afternoon, the sun #126 issue - BELLOmag.com
was shining and the city brimming with busyness. Greeted by a friendly local driver, we set off on our way and soon witnessed one of Istanbul’s problem points, much like many other bustling European cities, the traffic. Luckily for us, it was Ramadan and the roads soon emptied for the evening prayer during which long portions of the Qur’an are
recited known as the Taraweeh – to rest and relax. We soon arrived, welcomed by the W Istanbul Insider team who deserve a very special mention – aligning our stay at the hotel with every possible need and adventure that tipped our fancy, nothing was a problem, in fact quite the 16

After enjoying our first taste of delicious Turkish cuisine put on by the talented W Hotel chef’s and an adventurous first night at Five Cocktails and More in Beyoğlu, we sat down to enjoy the five

It included, fresh honeycomb (Petek Balout in Turkish) alongside a made to order Turkish Omelette (Menemen in Turkish), served by warm and friendly staff, allowing us to start our day off in the best possible fashion. Later that day, we took a Bosphorus cruise tour which gave us a different perspective in which to see the city along the famous waterway, providing a must see angle of both the Asian and European side to Istanbul, with the century old palaces and mansions galore. W Hotel Istanbul

DANIELLA
ALONSO IN ANIMAL KINGDOM WORDS MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOGRAPHER NATE TAYLOR
Y
ou might recognize Daniella Alonso from a little show called One Tree Hill, or you might remember her from a little town in Texas where she played Carlotta Alonso in Friday Night Lights. Either way, the Puerto Rican beauty has graced our TV screens for over a decade.
Not only is she a very talented actress but she is also an established model. I learnt this all too well from watching her killer photo shoot with Bello magazine, she really is a complete natural. Daniella is set to star in TNT’s highly anticipated drama Animal Kingdom where they premiered the first episode to the cast and close family and friends just the other week. “It was amazing. It was actually 2 nights ago in Venice. It was an incredible party, it was so much fun, TNT did a great job, a fantastic job.” Apparently the premiere evening turned into quite the party. “It was definitely the entire cast, EVERYBODY that’s worked on the show, they were really generous they let us all bring our family, everyone got eight tickets. I went with all my family and my girlfriends. It was a really good party. They served alcohol throughout the screening which was fun! And then next door they had this fake broken in jewellery store and there was fake glass everywhere and sand and it said ‘Welcome to the family’, it was really cool venue. And we all go skateboards!” So if you’re looking for a show that’s scenically beautiful with that edge of 21
drama you’ve come to the right place as Daniella describes the show as, “stunning cinematically and it has this beachy vibe to it with a little bit of danger.” Also, if you’re looking for an action packed adventure then you’ve definitely come to the right place. “There’s a lot of movement. There are hardly any scenes where someone’s sitting down and you’re having a conversation. We’re always moving, we’re always doing something, which is challenging when you have a lot of dialogue but it’s fun too!” It seems as though Daniella has a pretty great role too, given she plays Scott Speedman’s wife in the show – not a bad gig at all! She said, “I mean Scott Speedman… Is amazing! Oh god, he’s such a great actor, as soon as he walks on set he’s that character and he’s brilliant. I just watch him and I’m like you’re so good. He’s like, ‘um you have the next line’ and I’m like ‘oh sorry!’ He’s very generous and very kind. He’s always making sure I’m good in a scene. You can’t ask for more than that. Cute too, so that doesn’t hurt!” Of course we couldn’t go through the entire evening without bringing up the
legend of the show, Ellen Barkin. Daniella only needed one word to sum her up, “genuis”. She continued, “The second she steps foot in the make-up trailer, she is in character until the second she leaves. And so working with her has been such a blessing because I don’t have to do anything other than know my lines and just react, she’s that good. She gives me so much. Her character hates my character and so, I felt it! Day one I was like ‘oooh, oh god’. Her eyes are so vibrant and piercing. You see everything in her eyes, she’s so good.” It might be early days for the show, but apparently it’s worth sticking around until the end as the penultimate episode has some explosive moments. “We just finished shooting episode nine and that was one of the most intense scenes I’ve ever shot in my life and it’s with ‘Pope’, Shawn Hatosy. It’s a long scene and it’s very powerful, it’s one of those scenes that if the show takes off it’s the scene that everyone will talk about for the season. It’s intense, it’s really intense. It was just us two the entire day. After we were done shooting we were buzzing. I really do think this is a special story too because I don’t think anyone’s seen a family like this family.” June 2016 - BELLO

REVIEW: ‘TICKLED’ TAKES YOU WHERE YOU LEAST EXPECT IT BY HIKO MITSUZUKA (@THEFIRSTECHO)
S
exual fetishes are a dime a dozen during an era in which the Internet affords millions of people the opportunity to rock their socks off in any way they deem arousing.
And for those of you not familiar with the underground phenomenon known as Competitive Endurance Tickling, journalist-director David Farrier’s fascinating documentary, Tickled, will be an eye-opener. The pop culture journalist has made a career out of reporting on off-kilter subjects, so when he receives the opportunity to look into the aforementioned “sport,” his online research leads him to Jane O’Brien Media, a company behind a sizable portion of the content available to “tickle torture” fetishists. However, when he reaches out to the company for an interview, he’s immediately roadblocked, receiving threats of lawsuits and disturbing responses attacking his character, urging him to stop his investigation. Naturally, this sets off several alarms in Farrier, and his journey to understand the ins-and-outs of this bizarre
industry (according to the film, it spans across the globe) takes him from his native New Zealand to Florida, where he interviews an out-and-proud fetishist who runs his own web venture...the Midwest, where he meets a former tick-
le torture participant who’s been cyberbullied by the same shady company... New York, where he looks into the lineage of a certain Wall Street tycoon... and Los Angeles, where the documentary team briefly (and literally) lifts the curtain to reveal the source of all this digital content. The investigation, as the trailer promises, eventually takes an eerie turn when we learn the true identity of the puppet master behind all of the threats that come at Farrier and his producers throughout the film. And from there, we’re led down a detour into the murky profile of an individual who’s more like Oz the Shady and Powerful. While the payoff of this semi-exposé may not satisfy some seekers of justice, it does leave you with an unsettling feeling...and a slight hunger for more. RATING: 4/5 Tickled is now available in limited release.

E
ven though I write for an entertainment magazine I still must admit my naivety to a lot of things about the entertainment industry itself. Frankly, I’m not that interested in it. What excites me most is the opportunity to speak with the Human Beings who inspire or entertain others in front of the camera—the artists. These craftsmen and craftswomen build worlds in which audiences get to live in and experience fully.
Liz Gillies was originally just someone with a dream, and now here I am, a stranger, asking her questions about success—good job, Liz. Actors and actresses have to forfeit nearly all predictability in their “real lives” and live in a creative world in which they have little to no control. I’ve always found it interesting in seeing how each individual handles that unique reality and Liz seems to have an inclination of where she’s going to end up—with more control. Something seems to be biting at her and telling her she’d be good on both sides of the camera. A director. One thing seems clear—Liz is most interested in the art. With a general scorn for “Hollywood” parties, a desire for more creative control, and sponging off of her more veteran counterparts— she’s got the right attitude. So go do it. Go get your Oscar, Liz. BELLO: It seems like everything has been going really well for you, do you have any specific goals you’re working towards? Is there a moment in your head that would signify “making it” or do you already feel that way? LIZ GILLIES: I’m not sure what that “making it” moment would be for me now. I always used to say it would be winning and Oscar or becoming an A-list movie star but as you get older and you come to understand this game a little more, I think you start to develop multiple short term goals along the way as opposed to one big goal. Otherwise, you’ll wake up every day and feel disappointed that you haven’t won an Oscar yet, which is silly. Every job I get, no matter how big or small, is an accomplishment to me. I have so many things I’m working towards, I can’t even name them all. My big one right now is finding a role that challenges me and takes me out of my comfort zone. Plus, yeah, I guess that Oscar is still up there too. 37
B: Who has been a big influence in your life? How did it affect your journey to get to where you are? LG: My parents, and really my entire family, have always been extremely supportive of me. They’ve always believed in me and helped me in any way they could, which I’ve learned is a very rare thing in this business. Without my mom picking me up from school and driving me an hour into NYC for auditions multiple times a week, I never would’ve been able to try, let alone succeed at any of this. None of this would’ve been possible without my family being okay with it. It’s a big life adjustment, so I thank them for rolling with it. B: You’re on a show called Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll. How do you feel about each of those subjects? I’ll go first. Sex, a beautiful way to connect with someone I care about. Drugs, Legalize marijuana. Rock & Roll, always blasting with the windows down and sunroof back. LG: I agree with all three of yours! Well done. B: Can you paint a picture of your dream role? LG: There are so many roles that would be dream roles for me. At this point, I feel like I’ve really only scratched the surface of what I can and want to do. I’m most drawn to character-based roles. Human roles. It’s fun to play a character with lots of flaws. Lots of layers. I’d also love to play a role that’s completely different from who I am. It would be wonderful to get totally lost in somebody else for a while. B: What makes your days successful in your opinion? Is it booking roles, getting paid, meeting fans? If not, then what? LG: If I’m creative and productive, that’s a successful day to me. Obvious-
ly booking roles and getting exciting news feels great but those moments are few and far between so I feel that as long as I wake up, set a goal and accomplish it, that day was a success. B: Do you mainly want to focus on acting and singing long term or do you have any other desires that you’d like to pursue in the future? LG: I just started dabbling in writing, which I’ve really been enjoying. Eventually, I want to do it all: write, act, direct, produce. Especially now, working with Denis, I’ve gotten to observe first hand that the more you can do the more control you have, which is very appealing to me. I’d love to build something from the ground up. I also have this theory that I might like directing more than acting once I try it. I just have a feeling. B: Has having a spotlight on you publicly made you want to go out more or do you prefer private getaways? Quiet time with friends? LG: I’m not someone who will sit in their house and hide at the risk of being recognized or seen. I like getting my own groceries, shopping, going to restaurants, riding my bike, walking around…I live a normal life and I always want to. Luckily, I haven’t gotten to a point where I’m followed by paparazzi all the time- I might change my tune if and when that happens. Having said that, you’ll never see me at a club. I’ll always take an intimate get together at my house with close friends over a big Hollywood party. Any day. Those parties are the worst. B: Lastly, what’s been your biggest life lesson that’s come from your rise to stardom? LG: Stay grounded. Keep the people you grew up with close to you. Never take yourself too seriously. Remember where you came from. Oops, I guess that was four. Oh well, they’re all true. June 2016 - BELLO

Hawksmoor Knightsbridge WRITTEN BY JON NORRIS
Knightsbridge, an iconic district of London’s west-end known for wealth, exuberance, and the finer things in life.

The district has become rather popular for the super wealthy, whose lifestyle choices suit what Knightsbridge has to offer its residents – a paradise fit for just about anyone. That said, the area is a swell with tourists and locals alike, frequenting arguably one of the areas most iconic and well-known attractions, Harrods, as well as all the top names in fashion, making these famous streets in London, an ideal playground for many a shopping enthusiast. As well as home to some of the best shopping in London, Knightsbridge also has a restaurant that is known far and wide for delivering the best steak you can buy, namely Hawksmoor. Celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, Hawksmoor has grown to include five central London restaurants, one in Manchester and a soon to be opening Hawksmoor in New York at the end of 2017 in the World Trade Center, no less. Their uber glamorous Knightsbridge location is a 130-cover restaurant with a 25-cover bar, with an art deco inspired space, featuring reclaimed materials that Hawksmoor interiors are famous for, alongside sumptuous leather booths and brass arched windows. Managing to mix heart and soul into every inch, Hawksmoor Knightsbridge
