EDITOR’S
note,
JULY, 25, 2016
Coming from a music background, I have a huge part of my heart and soul that belong to music and musicians alike. So when I heard the explosive sounds of US THE DUO, I knew I had to have them in this magazine. I know I get excited about everyone we feature in this issue, but this time, I have to admit, I am especially jumping for joy knowing that BELLO mag will be Michael and Carissa’s (US THE DUO) first magazine cover! Shot in Santa Monica, CA by another super duo, (photographers Sosa Brandon and Arthur Galvao), also known as SOSA + ART, Michael and Carissa Alvarado give us a taste of not only their gorgeous-ness, but also their killer style. Also featured, rising star, Gabriel Bateman, lead of the anticipated horror flick (just ask Snap Chat) Lights Out. I had the priviledge to shoot this sweet, talened boy. Shooting this kid and getting to hang out with him for a few hours was like hanging out with family. Accompanied by his older sister and mother, seeing how they are together, it is obvious that love and talent run in the family. Rounding up this issue, we realize there is running theme, and that is family. So, we thank you for your continual support and being part of the BELLO mag family. Enjoy! Sincerely,
Leslie Alejandro, Executive Director

OUTFEST 2016:
The Good, The Proud, and the Sexy
O
BY HIKO MITSUZUKA @THEFIRSTECHO
utfest kicked off its festivities on July 7 with its Opening Night Gala at the downtown L.A.’s Orpheum Theatre. After a heartfelt and rousing speech from actor-activist Wilson Cruz, the night belonged to Clea Duvall as her directorial debut, The Intervention, charmed audiences. The evening also filled guests’ stomachs with diverse and flavorful fare that was offered at the enormous afterparty where a dozen restaurants and vendors served their best dishes. (Our fave: the mini lobster rolls.)
What distinguished this year’s festival from other years was a reinforced sense of community and pride, especially after the tragic events in Orlando earlier this summer and the controversial police shootings that followed throughout the country. Also, new to the 2016 festivities was a stronger sense #129 issue - BELLOmag.com

of security -- officers were stationed at venues, particularly at the Directors Guild of America on Sunset Boulevard, where most of the films were screened for audiences. Given the current (and heated) social climate in America, the extra precautions taken were understandable.
During Weekend 1, Outfest featured a smorgasbord of exciting programming and events. Skin, a timely and playful collection of scintillating shorts about male sexuality from around the globe, included Spain’s highly entertaining Doors Cut 16
Opening Night Afterparty
Down from director Antonio Hens and the standout from Cuba, Alfa, Javier Ferreiro López’s tale about a Cuban porn star returning to a film set years after the loss of his boyfriend and acting partner. Festival guests were also treated to a sneak peek of Season 3 of Amazon’s Transparent during a discussion panel featuring cast and crew from the groundbreaking, Emmy-nominated dramedy. Then, as a tribute to the late David Bowie, a late-night screening of 1983’s The Hunger reminded audiences why director Tony Scott’s cult classic is still as sexy and provocative as ever. (Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve’s steamy scene continues to titillate.)
Things carried on smoothly throughout the next few days, from real talk about current trans issues (the Redefining Realness panel) and two French boys finding love while finding themselves (Being 17, Jury Award winner for Best International Narrative Feature), to a celebration of an indie-film legend (Film Hawk), a sexy look at life on the DL (The Chadwick Journals), a brother and sister caught in the ultimate awkward love triangle (I Love You Both), and a moving celebration of long-term AIDS survivors in San Francisco (Last Men Standing).
Opening Night Intervention
Andrew Ahn’s Spa Night was also the talk of the festival, earning the U.S. Grand Jury Prize for Best U.S. Narrative Feature Film. The drama explores one Korean-American family’s dreams and realities as each struggles with the overlapping of personal desire, disillusionment, and sense of tradition in present-day Los Angeles. And thanks to Outfest’s film restoration initiative, the Legacy Project, Different from the Others, a German silent film from 1919, made its debut alongside a live accompaniment inside Theater 2 at the DGA.

Finally, after 11 days of eye-opening content, networking parties, and celebrations of diversity, Closing Night took place at The Theatre at the Ace Hotel where writer-director Chris Kelly’s Other People premiered to rousing applause. The semi-autobiographical film, starring a fine Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) and Molly Shannon (in a role and performance unlike anything you’ve seen her do), is about a New York comedy writer returning to his hometown to take care of his ailing mother. The film, which will be released in September, is a beautifully written piece of tragicomedy that didn’t leave a dry eye in the venue.
Meanwhile, at the reopened Ford Amphitheater, BearCity 3 made audiences laugh (and gasp) during Weekend 2 with its concluding chapter in the hairy trilogy. During the Friday night screening, certain scenes were unintentionally accompanied by singing from the Diana Ross concert at the Hollywood Bowl a few blocks away. Elsewhere, for highlighting the diverse array of issues facing black LGBTQ people today while also celebrating their vibrant culture with warmth, humanity, and a sharp eye for detail in an electric first feature documentary, the 2016 Programming Award for Emerging Talent went to Twiggy Pucci Garçon and Sara Jordenö for Kiki. #129 issue - BELLOmag.com

Movie Review: ‘Lights Out’ BY HIKO MITSUZUKA @THEFIRSTECHO
D
avid F. Sandberg’s horror short, Lights Out, was a viral hit back in 2013, managing to freak out anyone with a Facebook or Twitter account in just two minutes. The bite-sized thriller features a woman (Sandberg’s wife, Lotta Losten, who also appears in the 2016 big-screen adaptation) stalked by a shadowy figure that only appears when she turns out the lights. It was an effectively creepy bedtime tale, made even creepier with its gotcha ending, and now a major movie studio (hello, Warner Bros.) is betting on a more sizablebudgeted version of that concept. Of course, to fill out 90 more minutes of material, Sandberg and writer Eric Heisserer are now faced with the task of adding more characters and a mythology worthy of keeping audiences invested (and clenched in their theater seats). Enter the broken family at the center of Lights Out version 2.0: Twentysomething Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) takes her little brother Martin (Gabriel Bateman) under her wing after he’s freaked out by the recent odd behavior of their mom Sophie (a game Maria Bello). And on top of all that strife, everyone’s grieving after Dad (Billy Burke) mysteriously dies during a late shift at his textile factory. (The film’s prologue nicely mimics the now-iconic hallway scene of the 2013 short.) Turns out -- and this ain’t a spoiler -mama Sophie has been communicating with her dead childhood BFF Diana, a girl who suffered from a skin disorder and now appears in adult form as the scary, primal figure that’s trying to attack little Martin and big sis Rebecca. So...what’s the deal? It’s up to Rebecca and her hipster hunk of a boy toy (Alexander DePersia in a role that surprisingly becomes more likable as the story progresses) to crack the case.
Lotta Losten

Teresa Palmer
Sandberg’s debut as a feature-film director will undoubtedly be a success, and it represents a fresh, new piece of horror that fans can feast on, especially after the so-so scares of The Conjuring 2. By taking a very basic set-up (Be afraid of what’s lurking in the dark!), the filmmakers tap into viewers’ instinctual fears, and with the guidance of horror maestro/producer James Wan, the result is a pretty decent, serviceable thriller. Although one has to ask: how many more times do we have to see another family unit (especially a little moppet) be threatened by supernatural forces? Why can’t these big-screen Big Bads wreak havoc on the lives on some other group? Perhaps this is what we get when dealing with a major movie studio’s desire to “hit all quadrants” and appeal to a biggest audience possible. (Sigh.)
Thankfully Sandberg & Co. do manage to avoid a few of the tropes that have been plaguing recent scary movies (cough, anything credited to Jason Blum, cough) and, for once, we have a horror flick that doesn’t shamelessly leave a door open for sequels -- although, who am I kidding? If this thing earns back its modest budget (and then some), you can rest assured that someone will come up with a reason to crank out Lights Out 2. In fact, after hearing producer James Wan gush about the film at a WonderCon panel earlier this year and listening to his excitement about introducing audiences to a new horror villain like Diana, one can’t help but think that this won’t be the last time we venture into the darkness. P
eter Gadiot is quite a remarkable character. From holding down an impressive acting and theatre career to crossing the Atlantic on an epic six week rowing journey – all in the name of modern slavery and human trafficking.
The talented 30-year-old actor just finished a stint in Washington for Shakespeare’s iconic Taming Of The Shrew play. “I studied classical theatre in London and I started out in theatre. It really is such an honour to play a lead role in a Shakespeare play at a big theatre like this.” Gadiot may feel more at home on stage, however the British-born actor has turned Hollywood with his latest venture. He is currently playing the male lead in USA Network’s Queen Of The South, which debuted June 23rd. Speaking about the series Gadiot revealed, “The first episode is just showing the start of the story. Essentially the story is Teresa Mendoza goes from Mexico to America and becomes a very powerful female drug lord. The pilot starts in Mexico but by the end of it she arrives in America. The first episode serves as a prologue but the story properly begins in the second.”
However, his reasoning behind the expedition was more than admirable. “When I graduated I wanted to be a little less selfish and I wanted to do something meaningful. I wanted to do it in a way that was still going to allow me to pursue my career as an actor. I was trying to find a way to pursue the passion of the artistic life but also do something worthwhile and meaningful. I thought, ‘what can I do that is ridiculously hard?’ My journey across the Atlantic took six weeks. I wasn’t just sitting on a boat letting the wind take me, we powered through with our own muscle the entire way and we rode 2 hours on 2 hours off as a crew rotation for the entire duration – 24 hours a day.
It’s hard to talk to Gadiot without brining up his epic 2013 feat – rowing across the Atlantic for six weeks with a crew of people raise awareness for modern day slavery. “We rowed from the Canary Islands all the way to Barbados, it was epic.”
Gadiot embarked on this superhuman voyage to raise awareness for modern day slavery, something that he is extremely passionate about. “The issue of human trafficking and modern day slavery is just awful and the sad part is, it hardly gets any press! When you think about it, it’s the most heinous and cruel way of treating someone, literally treating them like they’re commodity. When you take away a human beings free will you really take away that which makes them human. Our freedom and our ability to choose our destiny makes us human, otherwise we’re literally just animals doing the mechanical tasks of sleeping, eating and drinking. It’s so sad because this issue is under the radar.”
It was quite the achievement for the 30-year-old, but it came with a price.
Queen Of The South airs on USA Network Thursday’s at 10/9c.
He had to rid himself of his charming British accent for the role in order to play an American. However, it turns out he was so convincing that he even had his cast fooled. “I literally was at the wrap party, after working every single day with most of the cast, and they only realized that I was British at the party!”

The Beauty Of Brutalism: Italian Photographer Oliver Astrologo & Giuseppe Perugini’s “Casa Sperimentale” BY BRENT LAMBERT

pproximately an hour’s drive west of Rome sits the town of Fregene, right alongside Italy’s Mediterranean coast. With a modest population of just 6,445 people, the town is not exactly a destination hotspot -- unless, of course, you are a fan of brutalist architecture.

Back in the late 1960s when he was in his prime, Italian architect Giuseppe Perugini wanted to build an experimental love letter to the brutalist style of architecture that he loved so much -- a style which flourished from the mid1950s to the mid-1970s. Once he found his lot nestled in a small patch of trees, Perugini began to assemble his eclectic fusion of concrete boxes, sculptural

forms, and wide-ranging materials. He called it his “Casa Sperimentale, and Perugini left the project abandoned when he passed away in 1995. But as with so many other fascinating examples of brutalist architecture, time has been very generous to the structure. After decades of neglect, the Casa Sperimentale has developed a remark-

H
ow can such an adorable kid play such a psycho? Well, it turns out, he can.
Let me introduce you to 11-year-old Gabriel Bateman. He is quite the little charmer I have to admit. Hailing from Turlock, California, Bateman is the youngest of nine children. Yes, I wrote that correctly, nine! His mother was on set when we photographed Bateman and you never would have guessed she gave birth to that many children. But it turns out it’s a good thing she did, as each and every child is very talented in their own right. He’s the youngest of the brood and has accomplished more than most at the mere age of 11. For the most part, Bateman sinks his teeth into the more dark characters. He plays Ethan Taylor in the drama series Stalker alongside the very talented Dylan McDermott. Describing his role in the show Bateman said, “He’s a normal kid then he finds out about his Dad and he wants to know more and he actually tries to find him. It’s really dark. Most of the stuff I do is pretty dark.” As if that wasn’t creepy enough he also plays Jack Hawthorne in CBS’ thriller American Gothic. The show follows a Boston family reeling in the wake of the chilling discovery that someone in their midst is linked to an infamous string of murders. Speaking about his character Bateman revealed, “He’s a psychopath! He’s pretty dark, he’s done some pretty bad stuff. I have to keep it undercover, for now.” He didn’t want to give too much away about the story but he did say, “It’s about a political family who are tied to a serial killer. One of the members of the family is supposedly a 37
killer and each episode is about finding out who it is.” From a psychopath to a possessed person. That’s right, he also takes on the role of Joshua Austin in FOX’s Outcast. Bateman revealed the show centers on Patrick Fugit’s character. “It’s about Kyle Barnes [played by Fugit] and he’s plagued by possession. He’s trying to find some answers so he goes back to his hometown and he meets a few people. I play Joshua Austin the first character he sees who possesses him in the show.” Playing three crazed characters wasn’t enough for this talented lad, so he’s also taken on the role of Martin in this summers’ horror blockbuster, Lights Out. He is very mature for someone so young, but even he admitted to being scared at the screening of this movie. “To be honest I didn’t think I was going to be scared since I’m in it. But it was actually one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever watched. And it was the second horror film I’ve been scared of. I don’t normally get scared in those films because they can be kind of ridiculous but it was amazing. The villain is so creative but simple.” In spite of his age, Bateman looks up to some of the greats. “I think Meryl Streep is amazing. Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio are really great. That being said, he is also a young boy in Hollywood, so it’s no surprise he already has his sights set on someone, “I have a crush on Emma Watson too.” July 2016 - BELLO

As soon as you step through the entrance on the ground floor, the feeling is something you will remember. You are greeted by restaurant staff straight away, and whisked up in the elevator to floor 32. Arriving to Oblix is incredible, eyes wandering to the views across the city, whilst glancing over the delicious cuisines being made right before your eyes by the specialty chefs. The aura is busy, elegant, romantic, and, one of the most extraordinary environments you can hope to eat in. We were lucky enough to have a prime window seat. Whilst sipping your first glass of Sauvignon Blanc of the evening, it’s easy to wander into the dramatic presence of rooftops and a scintillating skyline, but don’t forget you have company, too! If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the sun setting across the horizon, and my advice is to book a table 45 minutes before the sunset timing, so that you can enjoy the best of both worlds, from above.

The atmosphere in the restaurant adds an extra comforting buzz, but with enough space to dine intimately with your partner, it is the right mix of exciting with a mystical edge.
All in all, if there is one place in London where you can relax, unwind, and taste the London dream, Oblix is the place to go. I promise you, it will be a night to remember. JUST LOVE IS ALL LOVE with
US THE DUO WORDS MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOS SOSA + ART
THEY MET, FELL IN LOVE, GOT MARRIED, AND THEN BECAME A SINGING DUO. Carissa and Michael Alvarado, also known as Us The Duo, have made quite the name for themselves. They’re a California-based singing/songwriting couple and following two years of explosive social media fame, the awesome duo have a new album coming out, Just Love. Their spine-tingling singing chemistry wasn’t the first thing to blossom though. “The romance happened first. Singing and performing was just an added bonus that we didn’t discover until we were married. Once we tied the knot, we realized that we made a good musical pair. We actually consider this a positive thing, because even when the music fades, we’ll still have the most important thing to fall back on.” Despite hailing from North Carolina, Michael’s passion for music, and for his wife Carissa, was enough for him to pack up and head to the bright lights of LA. “I always knew I was a fish out of water in North Carolina. I had dreams of moving and pursuing my passion, but never found a big enough reason to make the switch. Then I met Carissa and everything began to make sense in my life. Moving to California to mar67
ry Carissa was really a no-brainer. It didn’t matter where she lived. I would have moved across the world for her.” In this day and age overnight fame isn’t a rare occurrence. And apparently Us The Duo were more than prepared for their journey. “Our lives have drastically changed, but in all honestly, we were prepared for this. We’ve both had a strange feeling in our stomachs for many years that we could make music a full time job. When the Vine videos started to get rapid views, we looked at each other and said ‘Oh my goodness…it’s happening.’ And that’s the funny part of passion – sometimes it ignites in the least unexpected way, and Vine was certainly that for us. To see our dream coming to life in the form of 6-second videos was a beautiful accident that we will forever be grateful for.” Their success is incredible after just a few short years in this crazy industry and it shows from the amazing adventures Michael and Carissa have embarked on already. “All of that led to quite an epic journey, full of twists and turns that we never could have predicted. We signed a major label record deal, debuted on national TV, watched
stars sing our song in a major FOX film, toured with Oprah, visited Mrs. Obama at the White House, left the major label, toured arenas around the United States and Europe, and now we’re putting out a new record independently! The best part is: we get to do it all together. We’re thankful for the past, and even more excited for the new album, Just Love, and all that it may bring!” Apparently they credit their success to four very simple things. “1. Drive / ambition – stay motivated and create constant content 2. Be creative and do something that’s NEVER been done before. 3. Ask close friends and family for their opinions. They will always be supportive and honest with you. 4. Do what makes you happiest. Simple as that!” The talented couple start touring in Seattle, Washington July 21 and finish in Houston, Texas November 22. They’re travelling the world for their epic tour, but apparently there’s one destination they’re most excited about. “We LOVE Barcelona! We can’t to go back to eat and explore more on our tour!” Visit www.ustheduo.com/tour to find out where they’re playing. July 2016 - BELLO
