EDITOR’S
note,
SEPTEMBER, 22, 2016
There really is nothing more I like about my job as Entertainment Editor than bringing new talent to new heights. I believe I’ve done just that with Kerris Dorsey, giving this fresh face her first magazine cover, a first for the Ray Donavan actress, and the first time ever for BELLO profiling an actor from the series. Kerris has a different look—one I like to call, somewhere between vintage and original. Enjoy her spread and the career she has ahead of her. Just remember—you saw her here first.

ining amongst some of the world’s most famous landmarks, overlooking one of the world’s most iconic cities, is something that most people dream of, but at City Social, it becomes a reality, with 24th floor views across the City of London.
As soon as you step through the entrance on the ground floor, the feeling is something you will remember, being a Jason Atherton owned restaurant, this is not something that comes as a great surprise – you are greeted by restaurant staff straight away, and whisked up in the elevator to floor 24, anticipating the wonderful evening ahead. On arrival, the feeling is incredible, glancing over the delicious cuisines, warm and friendly smiles sitting at every table, with people clearly enjoying their experience overlooking the City of London. The ambience is beautifully elegant, busy but relaxed and, one of the most extraordinary environments you can hope to eat in if I’m honest. rience even more special, with views of London Bridge, The Gherkin, and The London Eye in the distance. Whilst sipping your first glass of wine, hand picked by the sommelier of the evening, it’s easy to wander into the dramatic presence of rooftops and a scintillating skyline, but don’t forget you have company, too! If you’re lucky, you’ll catch the sun setting across the horizon, and my advice is to book a table 45 minutes before the sunset timing, so that you can enjoy the best of both worlds, from above. The gorgeous art deco environment offers a more conservative menu than
what you’d come to expect from Jason Atherton, but equally as scintillating and tasteful. The roasted quail with peas, broad beans and pancetta was the dish to start me off, full of flavour and delicacy, bordering on perfection I have to say. The fillet steak was my main, hand delivered by an array of smartly dressed waiters and waitresses, the plates were delicious, melt-in-your-mouth succulent beef – and the duck fat chips were unlike any other I had tasted before. Taking in the environment, whilst enjoying a menu that flourishes in a deep rooted food loving foundation, is cer-
tainly one of the best ways to enjoy a Saturday night here in London. That said, the waiting staff put you under no pressure to move on after dinner, and understand that part of the experience is sitting amongst the skyline after such a delicious feast – certainly, this is a memorable added extra that I take away with me, given so many restaurants these days want quick turnarounds at the sacrifice of customer care. The atmosphere in the restaurant adds an extra comforting buzz, but with enough space to dine intimately with your partner, it is the right mix of excitement with an added mystical edge all in one. All in all, if there is one place in London where you can relax, unwind, and taste the London dream, City Social is the place to go. I promise you, it will be a night to remember. Run Happy at the Rio Olympic Games 2016
A
s the sun sets on the Rio Olympic Games 2016, we reflect on one of the standout brands of the event, Brooks. The brand has over 100 years of history in sport, and has recently undergone a revolution in technological advancements. We examine the brand in more detail. WRITTEN & CREATED BY MARK NORRIS It is hard to believe that Brooks, known for is brand ethos ‘Run Happy,’ was on the brink of bankruptcy in 2001. A white-hot brand in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Brooks made shoes and apparel for a variety of sports including basketball,
tennis, and football, until 2001 when Jim Weber came on as CEO. With the company losing money on many of its product lines, Weber decided to undertake a massive strategy change.
Since then, Running has been the brand forte, a decision that has paid off, and has created a brand which fights for top spot amongst short and long distance runners alike.
Editors Picks Brooks Adrenaline GTS 16 These trusted, go-to running shoes for men are the perfect balance of support and soft cushion, and especially great for those who tend to pronate. The midsole dynamically adapts to every step thanks to our DNA midsole, while your body is guided into it’s natural alignment with the help of a supportive Progressive Diagonal Rollbar. Plus, smooth heel-to-toe transitions are made possible by our Full-Length Segmented Crash Pad. This sixteenth edition is more plush than ever—an updated V-Groove folds deeper inward to absorb and disperse impact away from the foot. Also new to this men’s/women’s running shoe is a nearly seamless design that provides a comfortable and secure fit. Set out for an effortless run in this popular men’s running shoe.

Brooks Glycerin 14 The men’s Glycerin 14 neutral running shoe is the ultimate in super-soft cushioning, and comes equipped with everything you could ever want to glide through your run in supreme comfort.
Brooks Cascadia 11 Like an SUV for your feet, these supportive men’s trail shoes deliver a cushioned, balanced, ride—the best all-around, versatile shoe for adventures out and about. Feet stay comfortable and secure with trail-specific technologies that add a layer of protection, including a four-pivot system that acts like a personalized suspension system on tricky terrain, a ballistic rock shield to protect feet from hazards, and a rugged outsole that provides great traction on wet surfaces. New to this edition of trail shoes for men is a redesigned forefoot for improved durability. Please note: The Cascadia is designed as a trail running shoe. While a lot of people love it as a fastpacking and thru-hiking shoe while carrying ultralight gear, the Cascadia is not pack-rated and may not hold up to the extra weight and demands of long pack hikes. We’re your go-to option for trail runs, but a sturdy hiking boot may be better suited for heavy packs.
9
First Run Experience The Glycerin 14 shoe has a super soft feel within the insole, with as much cushioning and upper support as I need. The outer feels very flexible, even from the outset, with a stable ride, and a wholesome feel. When running, the luxurious cushioning ensures you will never feel too hard-footed, and actually, it provides a boost of energy in every step. The style of the shoe creates a special feeling when running, but overall, the shoe exceeds expectation on every level. UNLESS YOU’RE A WHITE DUDE YOU’RE NOT GOING TO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO ANYTHING THAT ISN’T A STEREOTYPE. THAT IS JUST THE WAY IT IS.
The Dallas-born actor got his first big break back in 2012 in Dan Fogelman’s series ‘The Neighbors’. However, the rising star admitted it hasn’t necessarily been smooth sailing since then. The 32-year-old actor got very candid with BELLO as he discussed the perils of being a struggling actor, his close bond with Maze Runner’s Ki Hong Lee and the lack of roles there are for Asians in the industry.
However, thanks to his close bond and working relationship with Dan Fogelman, his role as Eliot in ‘Pitch’ was a pretty easy decision for the creators. “One day I got a call to audition for Dan’s new show [Pitch]. They told me to take my time, that I was the first and only audition and that they didn’t intend to audition anyone else. I guess it’s my first time in the business getting a taste of what they say loyalty is.”
The talented actor has several upcoming projects including a short titled ‘A One and a Two’ and a TV series called ‘Mystic Cosmic Patrol’. Tim only had appraisals for these two jobs. Speaking about the short Tim said, “I loved it so much. We flew in a Korean actress and getting to know her was probably the best part. The director and I got on really well. When I first met with him I was reading for a different character and I had the audacity to say, well how about I play the lead and I re-write the script with you, and he was like okay. It was an awesome experience creatively.”
Tim went on to discuss his character in the highly anticipated drama, with a pretty specific comparison. “In the pilot I play the Renée Zellweger to Ali Larter ‘s Tom Cruise. I give the little parts of comedic relief. It’s an hour-long drama and it’s a really cool show. The way they shot it is super smart and there’s so much edge. Hopefully what our show will do is what Rocky did for boxing, make it really cool you know. It’s a mixture of Entourage meets Friday Night Lights.”
He then jumped ship to a very different project, the comedy ‘Mystic Cosmic Patrol’ with Malcolm In The Middle’s Christopher Masterson. “It’s the best thing I’ve worked on in a while. Knowing me I’m a huge nerd of all things Japanese and action figures and superheroes so I was immediately drawn to it. What I loved the most was watching Christopher Masterson and how much passion and dedication he was putting into the role. He got super jacked for this little comedy about power rangers, I think that’s what made me really interested in it. I also found out two of the writers wrote for animations I really like, The Avengers and Ninja Turtles. Writing wise, those are some of the best shows written on television. They’re super talented guys.” Before Tim got his next big break on ‘Pitch’, a new drama on Fox, the actor admitted it wasn’t an easy ride. “I think every actor has heard the phrase we’ll bring you back or we’re going to have to work together again, it’s the greatest feeling to hear it but you never know if it will happen.” 25
Despite his great upcoming role on Fox as a series regular, Tim still admits that there isn’t a whole lot of equal opportunity in the industry. “For Asian guys the playing field isn’t very pretty. A lot of the roles you get are either the horny friend or the gay friend or some other sort of friend. It’s the same stuff as always.” He also spoke about his good friend Ki Hong Lee from the Maze Runner franchise. Before finding fame on the post-apocalyptic science fiction pentalogy, Tim revealed him and Ki Hong were both in the same boat. “I remember I was doing the first season of ‘The Neighbours’, Ki Hong was in the same position as all of us Asian actors. Just sh** stuff out there, nothing for an Asian dude. Unless you’re a white dude you’re not going to get the opportunity to do anything that isn’t a stereotype. That is just the way it is.” In spite of the inequality that still exists in the industry, it looks as though Tim’s career is on the up and up. If you want to see this go-getter in action catch the premiere of ‘Pitch’ September 22nd at 9/8c on Fox. September 2016 - BELLO

lthough they’re made with the same materials as clothes, a well-designed pair of shoes can elevate the most basic of outfits with the right combination of textiles (animal skins, synthetics), thread, adhesives, fasteners, elastic, and the occasional screw and/or bolt. And with red carpets featuring a shoe cam, it’s no surprise that people aren’t making a fuss about the frocks.

While it takes a special eye to see beyond the sketch, it also takes ambition and a fearlessness to push forward – ideally to the top of the industry. Hailing from Ghana, Richard Kwame Brako moved to NYC at 18 to study at Parsons and never looked back. Initially focusing in women’s wear, he entered his thesis collection of accessories on a whim into a design competition underwritten by Cesare Paciotti – which he won – and their collaboration sold at Barneys New York and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Instead of starting a line from scratch, experience in the workrooms of Helmut Lang and Acne Studios was imperative to learn the intricate machinations of taking an initial concept to the final product. Naming his company Richard Braqo (due to copyright issues), Brako launched a collection for 2013 of footwear using the same artisans who craft pieces for A-list designers. The sumptuous textures (nubuck, pony skin) in rich hues (emerald, sapphire) juxtapose edgy designs, intricate and ingenious details (hidden platforms give

For fall, Brako was drawn to the analytical tension in Alain De Botten “Essays In Love” which is an exploration of romantic love and the imbalance between the male and the female perspective. Titled Bifurcation, selected styles are sliced via exaggerated faux monk straps, displaying slivers of skin. Lucite heels (with talon-like screws clearly visible) and signature gold torques that wrap

the ankle are tough, yet elegant. And while a lot of black (plain and patent) is on offer, rose quartz color tone makes an occasional appearance to soften the sharper surroundings. With a 2016 WGSN award for breakthrough footwear and accessories designer of the year and a growing number of stockists on speed-dial, insiders – media and retail – love his designs. Even music icons like Rihanna and Madonna are fans. And while not everyone can be a rock star, they can surely feel like one after slipping on a pair of Richard Braqo shoes.

“H
i, may I have a Venti Iced Coffee with no sweetener and a splash of coconut milk, please? And also a Venti ice water?” Carlie Craig’s voice was gentle and pleasant. She delivered her order at Starbucks with what could best be described as kindness. “You have to hydrate if you get a Venti. That’s my philosophy!”
Carlie is the brilliant talent who racked up over 8 million views with her spot on impressions of Emma Stone, Shakira, Gwen Stefani, Ariana Grande, Lorde, Kristin Chenoweth, and Iggy Azalea. Her impeccable ability to slip so completely into character earned her a coveted slot on the landmark fifteenth season of The CW’s “MADtv.” “You have to be nice to everyone and understand the importance of relationships and how valuable they are,” she told Bello. “This town is very, very small and the people you run into every day will help you down the road… as long as you first treat them with respect.” A few years ago, when Carlie was a senior at Florida State, she was a theater major and a media production major. A couple of guys, David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe, who had started their own reality TV production company (Renegade 83), were lecturing at the university. Craig skipped her theater class to attend the lecture. When it was over, the delightful bundle of caffeinated exuberance introduced herself to the guys. She made such a positive impression that the producers wanted to stay in touch with her. “When I graduated, I moved out to LA to work as a PA for this reality TV production company. And that was where I stayed for five months.” Enter Todrick Hall. Todrick is an incredibly successful singer, actor, dancer, director, choreographer, and YouTuber who gained notoriety on the ninth season of “American Idol.” “Todrick is the most important person to me – besides my mom – because 37
he really, truly helped me to build my resume,” Carlie expressed. “All of the opportunities I had, anything that you see on my résumé before ‘First Impressions with Dana Carvey,’ that happened because of Todrick. He is one of the most generous, brilliant creatives that I’ve ever met. And that’s my blanket statement. He was so monumental in how I’ve gotten to where I am.” “I don’t think people realize the amount of blood, sweat, and tears that went into everything that I have done with Todrick,” she continued. “I think it’s really important to latch onto a mentorship because it’s a crash course on the industry. I learned how to spot a quality wig, how to pay attention to certain details in videos, and how to behave around the important people – which is more important than you think. You learn by doing and nothing comes easy, you have to be grinding every single day. It takes a lot of work and a lot of people want the reward at the end, but they don’t know how much effort truly goes into it. Working hard and being good to people are the two key rules for being successful in this industry.” Fast forward to November 2015. Todrick’s show was over and Carlie needed to find work. So, she decided to go back to being a PA for Renegade 83, the company that made it possible for her to move out to LA. “I went back and I heard people auditioning through a door,” Carlie recalled. “I’m like, ‘Hey, what is this show?’ And they told me they were doing a show with Dana Carvey. So I said, ‘You guys do know that I want to be on ‘SNL,’ right? And I do impressions.’”
Which brings us back around to where we started, Carlie’s impressions. They got her on “First Impressions with Dana Carvey,” garnered her over 8 million combined views online, and ultimately earned her a place on “MADtv.” But impressions are only one facet of the Carlie diamond, she has a trove of other talents. She is also an accomplished vocalist, an actress, a writer, and even a bit of a dancer. However, the centerpiece of all her skills is comedy. “I love making people laugh,” she told Bello. “Growing up, I was always entertaining my family in our living room. I was always joking around and I was voted ‘Class Clown’ in high school. I’ve always just loved making people smile, making people laugh, and spreading joy. That’s the main thing. That’s what I will always be doing and that’s what I want to be remembered for.” One of the many gifts that Craig was blessed with is her uncanny sense of timing – Carlie has a remarkable flow and a dynamic cadence. Listening to her deliver lines is like listening to a great jazz musician improvising a solo. Another gift that she was born with, however, is something that she almost considers a hinderance to her career. Carlie is often called “cute” or “pretty.” “I’m glad you brought that up,” she stated. “I actually do love making it my goal to be as ugly as possible when I’m doing my comedy. I am very confident in who I am as a person. I own my skills and I love what I do. However, as a possible role model to girls who are growing up, I need them to know that it’s okay to have your hair disheveled. It’s okay to September 2016 - BELLO

not be perfect. It’s okay to look like a whack job!” she laughed. “Here’s a fun fact for you. Two of my teeth are removable,” she revealed. “I was born without them and I never got them fixed. What a gift for a comedian to be born with two missing teeth! You know that Princess Polly sketch on ‘MADtv?’ If you watch it to the end, two of my teeth are missing… I actually took them out for the end of that sketch.” “Also, it’s a really fun party trick,” she added. “If I’m talking to a guy that I’m not interested in, I just take my teeth out real quick when they’re not looking. They get really confused and scared and then they run away. It works every time.” In closing, Carlie noted that she’s probably done about a thousand interviews where all she talked about was “MADtv,” but she hasn’t talked much about how she got from Florida to “MADtv” in just three years. “That backstory is very important to me. I’m living proof that you can make it happen. A lot of people will let life happen to them instead of making life happen. Don’t be afraid to try. Be a good person, be good to people, and work hard. Do what makes you happy and follow your passion, whatever it is, because that’s what’s going to lead you to your success.” “‘MADtv’ has been hands down the most incredible experience in my life. Talk about surrounding yourself with positive people, that whole cast, the crew, everybody loves what they do so much! That’s what made the experience so special for me. Being surrounded by that all summer long has motivated me on a whole other level.” MADtv airs Tuesday nights at 9/8c on The CW. Allen Foster Twitter: @AllenJFoster

“Entering an Elegant Fashion Port” BY: STEVEN CARVER

s of now, there are four fashion capitals – Paris, Milan, London and New York – that showcase what consumers will wear once collections are released in stores or online. While these cities dominate the runways, there are other lesser-known destinations that produce their own respective presentations. From Seoul to Stockholm, they pop up everywhere, even in Portugal. With a thriving textile and leather industry, Portugal is on its way to becoming one of the largest fashion manufacturing hubs in Europe. With an aesthetic that lies between the austerity of Berlin and whimsy of Brazil, the country recently celebrated 20 years of Portugal Fashion with 31 shows set in magnificent settings across Lisbon and Porto. On the forefront of Europe’s style evolution is Diogo Miranda. With a degree in Fashion Design from Cenatex (located in Guimarães, a northern district of Portugal), the 20-something Miranda began his career with an internship in Seville, in the studio of Miguel Reyes, and then in the textile business. From working with Reese Witherspoon to
Brad Pitt, Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner, 18-year-old Kerris Dorsey has already had quite the Hollywood experience. The rising ingénue sat down with BELLO to talk about all her incredible co-stars thus far, her new crime show Ray Donovan opposite the talented Liev Schreiber and her dreams of collaborating with her idol Claire Danes.
BELLO MAG: At the mere age of 18, you’ve already worked on some huge blockbuster movies including Walk The Line and Moneyball. Walk The Line went on to win an Oscar, how did it feel to be a part of such a special production at such a young age? KERRIS DORSEY: It was pretty surreal. Of course, being 5, I had no idea the scale and special-ness of a movie like Walk The Line. I just liked my character and I liked playing her. I didn’t realize at the time, the sort of pedigree that accompanied the film and the people involved. Now I look back and it’s obviously insane that I had that experience at such a young age. That little 5 year old was a lucky duck. BM: You played Brad Pitt’s daughter, Casey Beane, in Moneyball. What was your experience like working alongside such an iconic actor?

KD: That experience is one I cherish the most. I can never say enough positive things about Brad. He is so genuine, so gracious and kind. I was really lucky to witness that at a young age, because that’s something I will always aspire to. He’s such an incredible actor on top of it, which is just like unfair. BM: You got to work on a movie with Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Did you feel at all intimated working with Steve on a comedy? KD: Are you kidding? Of COURSE. I was so intimidated. I’m the biggest Office fan ever, and he’s so revered as a comedic actor. I felt like I had so much to live up to, to attempt to keep up with his timing and his wit. But luckily, he only brings out the best in the people he shares scenes with. He’s such a giving actor and he’s so open in scenes that you can’t help but feel like you have a partner who is really rooting for you to succeed. The only real problem was I kept ruining takes by laughing.

BM: Out of all the amazing actors and actresses you’ve got to work with, who would you say you have learnt the most from?
55
KD: I learned so much from Jennifer Garner. She inspires me a lot, just in how she interacts with people onset and how much grace she brings to every role she plays. She’s the best person. And Liev Schreiber teaches me every day, simply by acting in front of me. I feel like I become a better actor in scenes with him. BM: Is there a particular actor/actress that you have yet to work with that you’d like to? KD: Claire Danes is kind of my everything. I want to do a show cross-over, Ray Donovan vs. Homeland. Maybe I could play Carrie Mathison’s right-hand. Just a thought. Hopefully Showtime is reading this article. BM: Your latest project, Ray Donovan, has been receiving rave reviews. Tell me a little bit about the show? KD: Ray is about a “fixer” in Hollywood who makes the problems of the rich and famous disappear. The core of the show is his family; his kids and wife, his brothers, and his father, who at the start of the show, is released from prison. It’s a very raw look at family, faith, Hollywood, and how someone’s past can deeply affect their present. BM: What’s your character like in this series? KD: I play Bridget Donovan, Ray’s daughter. She’s kind of the apple of his eye. Bridget is very intelligent and independent, and desperately seeks an identity outside of her family. It’s an incredibly complex character, and I love playing her. She can be very combative. I have people coming up to me all the time saying “you’re so horrible! I mean, you’re GREAT, but you can be so mean!” If people think that, I know I’m doing my job. BM: Again, there is a stellar cast in this show. What is the atmosphere with the actors like off set when you’re not filming? KD: So. Fun. It sounds cliché, but after four years of working together, it’s only natural that you become a tight-knit family. The subject matter is very dark and intense, so we’re super lucky that our cast and crew know how to balance that with a lot of silliness. And singing. Lots of singing. BM: I saw on Twitter that you reached out to Leslie Jones after she took down her Twitter page due to receiving vile threats. Do you struggle with Twitter trolls and social media yourself? KD: That was so messed up. I saw ghostbusters the other day and literally ALL THE HATE that it received was completely ridiculous. Some people are just afraid of funny, 57
independent, kickass women. And Leslie killed it. But yeah, social media is this weird double edged sword. On one hand, you can connect with people who are fans of your work, and it makes the world smaller. But on the other, it can be so toxic. People sit behind their computer and type stuff that they would NEVER say to your face. They’re given power and bravery because of their anonymity, and that’s scary when you’re on the receiving end. BM: How do you not let the negativity affect you? KD: I’m a big fan of the block button. This one dude was commenting really horrible stuff on my Instagram, and when I clicked on his profile, his bio literally said he wished the Purge was legal. So, yeah. Blocked. I also sometimes comment back to people and say, “hey, I’m sad you feel the need to write this” or whatever. 9 times out of 10 they reply back saying they’re so sorry and they don’t know why they commented that. It’s all pretty silly, though. You can’t depend on strangers for opinions, good or bad. As long as you like who you are, and the people you care about IRL do too, that’s all that matters. What’s the difference between
Fashion & Style? INSIDE FASHION, WITH THE NORRIS TWINS WRITTEN AND CREATED BY MARK & JON NORRIS
“Never confuse fashion and style. Fashion Relies on unattainable looks on people with unrealistic bodies. Style is about utilizing the best aspects of you” – Stacy London. An interesting thought. Fashion is the relationship you have with the external environment. It is concerned with “what’s out there” (fashionable items, in the stores). It’s a matching process between what’s out there to what I’m wearing. Is what I’m wearing a ‘match’ for what’s ‘out there’, to what’s been deemed ‘in fashion’? Style is the relationship with the internal self. It’s about “what’s in here” (my sense of self, my identity, my perception of who I am). The matching process is between
what’s in here and how that is reflected and expressed in what I’m wearing. Does my clothing ‘match’ my sense of who I am, at least for today? Fashion distracts, style connects. Fashion takes our attention away from ourselves, style brings our attention directly to ourselves. When we think about our own style, we like to connect it to a certain stereotype, or era, or person, which gives it meaning, and a specific social status. Without this depth, we wouldn’t be able to separate edgy from public-school boy, or Ralph Lauren from Kenzo.
