Designers are weaving dream dresses for the modern day Princess this Autumn/Winter 2016 BY NICOLA FERLEI BROWN

M

irror, mirror on the wall.. Which is the most beautiful season of them all? Why, winter, of course. And, a winters tale just became even better dressed, because designers are taking their muses from fairy tales at the moment.

Italians do drama well and the Autumn Winter 2016 couture collections shown in Paris, Rome, and Naples did not disappoint, adding the emotional intensity of Italia to the magical fashion shows.

Dolce & Gabbana Dolce & Gabbana didn’t waste any time in dreaming up a divine four day event for their ‘Fabulous Fantasy’ A/W 2016-2017 womenswear fashion show in Naples.

Earlier in the year, they wowed us with their A/W Ready to Wear collection catwalk design installation, decorated with a giant book with the words: ‘A Princess was walking in the woods when she met Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gab-

bana’. There was even a princess carriage, the midnight clock, a moon and models wearing military tailcoat jackets in the style of the toy soldier from The Nutcracker. Dresses with cats and mice were the icing on the cake.

Fendi and the Trevi And, now lets talk about what may be the most original fashion show of all time. It doesn’t get much more decadent than typing the equation ‘Fendi’ and ‘Trevi’ into the dream design drawing board, does it.

©Fendi

They paraded 99 exquisite Alta Moda outfits, with each model bowing or nod-

ding towards their muse, Sophia Loren, who watched from a red velvet throne. “She’s the inspiration for this whole collection,” says Dolce. “Touch, touch!” he said, showing off the beautiful fabrics with baroque floral blooms. Bustiers dazzled with sparkly gems and there was something a bit Dangerous Liaisons in the mix.

Fendi chose Rome, its hometown, to celebrate it’s 90th anniversary and show their spectacular Autumn/Winter 2016 Couture collection, on July 7 2016. The beautiful event took place against the backdrop of the Baroque Trevi Fountain, followed by a dinner at the Terrazza del Pincio in Villa Borghese. Just when you thought Rome couldn’t get any more magnificent, you turn the corner and see the Trevi fountain being used as a catwalk, with models ‘walking on water’, across the glass runway built into the water basin of the fountain. The design concept behind the show began with an early 20th century edition of East of the Sun, West of the Moon, a Norwegian fairy tale with pictures by the famous children’s book illustrator Kay Nielsen, inspiring Lagerfeld. “This was something from the North, we were making a fur collection, and the pictures were something in between art nouveau and art deco.” 7

Moved by the fairytale inspired collection, Lagerfeld said “In my wildest imagination, I never thought something like this could exist. To do this on a crystal bridge over the most famous fountain in the world? If that’s not a fairy tale, I don’t know what a fairy tale is.” The show told the story of a Princess transforming from day to night, the colour palette darkening as she travelled further into the woods. The minute attention to detail was exquisite. Fendi’s extraordinary designs of an insect’s wings illuminated by the Trevi fountains lights, were echoed in a tiny clutch of feathers, and mink petals sewn into the hems of organza dresses. This is the stuff that dreams are made of.

Fairy Tale Fashion Fashion and theatre are intertwined. Runway shows are magical, with stories, beautiful dresses and creations,

impressive tech and light installations so it makes sense that the world of make believe is merging with world of moda this winter. Earlier in the year was the “Fairy Tale Fashion” exhibit at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Inspired by classic stories from Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, the installation features over 80 objects that illustrate the characters of 15 different stories through the work of designers such as Alexander McQueen and Marchesa. ‘Children’s Stories’ editorial from Vogue Novias, 2005. and and a dash of shoulder pads. Romance, lace, ruffles, pretty trims and floaty gowns with a lil hint of a glass slipper. Fendi, Dolce and Gabanna and Giambattista Valli are remaking the high-waisted empire line silhouette for the modern woman. This is a beautiful white pleated silk mousseline and crepe dress with draped motocross leather sleeves, designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

Valentino’s collection was both the final showcase for designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccoli’s nearly three decades of collaboration and a tribute to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Their Little Red Riding Hood cape teamed with black biker boots added an edgy twist to the tale.

Dior ©Dior What is it about the winter and fairy tales that brings out the magic in design? Dolce&Gabbana just made every woman’s dream come true. Their words: “Who is the most beautiful? You”. But don’t worry about the clock striking midnight and this beautiful moda disappearing. The mega trend will be with us for a while, because Autumn/Winter 2017/18 will be all about the Queen of the night with a dark twist.”

A’s newest local hottie Paul Knops of LA Models hits the hiking trails with photographer Kara Nixon and stylist Christina Callauti. He may look clean cut, but he knows how to get down and dirty. In order to show off how manly he is, we went to the mountains of Angeles Forest where he hiked while looking fashionable, attempted hitch hiking shirtless (we had a lot of people honking), and kicked around some dirt in his tight jeans. He’s definitely an LA local now.

Game-Changing Performance WRITTEN BY JON NORRIS New Balance as a brand has been through some exciting times these past few years, reinvigorated with a new emphasis on the performance element of their brand and market, as opposed to being more lifestyle focused. An important step made by CEO Robert DeMartini was to re-focus their efforts on the performance business, and these efforts I believe, are paying off nicely for the brand. In the past few years, New Balance have made its first branded play in the

tail, digital and mobile experiences – people are taking notice and the brand has become relevant again, talking to younger as well as older audiences.

Being relevant in today’s society is important, look at how other top brands in other sectors such as Airbnb and Uber have created a ginormous impact on a massively changing market in travel and tourism.

Consumers are more and more driven towards unique and different experiences, brands that offer you this as well as comfort, style and functional impact when it matters in sport. New Balance is exactly that – un-paralleled sophistication that when you wear a piece of the New Balance kit, provides the difference between winning and second place.

BELLO AT THE MOVIES REVIEW:

‘The Handmaiden’ is a Sensual Delight BY RINGO LE @RINGOLE

S

outh Korean director Park Chan-wook’s newest film The Handmaiden, an adaptation of Sarah Waters’s pulp crime drama Fingersmith reset in 1930s Korea and Japan, is his most sensual, lavish, and meticulous to date.

Handmaiden is the story of an illiterate peasant girl (Kim Tae-ri) named Nam Sook-hee who is also the film’s narrator. She is hired to be the servant girl of wealthy Japanese heiress Hideko (Kim Min-hee) whose palatial Korean home sets the tone for the wealth the Japanese possessed in 1930s Korea. Soon we learn that the person who actually took the peasant girl into the colonial estate to be a servant is none other than a Korean golddigger posing as a Japanese count named Fujiwara (Ha Jung-

woo). This is where the story unfolds into a game of manipulation. With an uncanny resemblance to 1920’s Japanese-American movie star Sessue Hayakawa, our Fujiwara sets off a chain of events that further complicates things. But ominously overseeing all of this may be Lady Hideko’s caretaker and uncle, Kouzuki (Cho Jin-woong), whose sadism is not only endless, his stories of sex and torture are shelved in his library. But as soon as we are made to believe that Fujiwara has the upper hand over

the heiress and her servant girl, the narrative shifts stealthily to another character’s mindset, shifting perspectives. At two-and-a-half hours, this film is more languidly shot and leisurely paced than Park’s previous directing efforts. And this is his first return to Korean cinema since 2011’s Thirst. The production design and attention to period detail of the era is impeccable. And though the story tries to cover new ground, some are outside Park Chan-wook’s previous milieu.

28

It is feminist and degrading at the same time, which may be its very intention. What the first two acts build the third act somewhat lets down as Park Chan-wook retreats to familiar Korean revenge-style fantasy. But at the end of the day, who walks away the true winner of this story may be for the viewer to decide. To call Fingersmith itself a cult hit among lesbians throughout this writer’s social circle, if not the world, is an understatement. And Park has done justice to the material by giving it such a lavish and elaborate treatment. The story, set in three parts/ perspectives, unfolds in a Rashomon-style fashion. Each segment provides more information to counterbalance what we’ve seen in the last part to bring the story to a conclusion. And that is the brilliance with this particular filmmaking. Its parts are subjective while letting the viewer reach their own objective with the totality of the story as a whole. RATING: 3.5/5 29

know firsthand how difficult it is to find the perfect travel items. I get this question all the time: what do you pack? So, I am making a short list of must-have things to take with you during this hectic season. If you have a beauty, travel or style question, feel free to send me a note via any social media to @HauteFrugalista, and I will fulfill the request on an upcoming S.O.S feature!

AWAY THE CARRY-ON LUGGAGE: There is no way to begin an awesome trip without the help of a great bag, and that is where this well-designed brand comes into play. Â Sophisticated, efficient, practical, lightweight, and useful are some of the words we can use to describe this high-tech luggage. Made with sturdy yet flexible German polycarbonate in over 7 colors, it comes with add-ons that are sure to make your life easier. The star is a built-in double charger located on the top handle which can charge up to two devices in no time. This will be a time saver and avoid having to search non-stop for wall plugs during layovers. Inside, a separate mesh compartment ensures all items are properly stored without making the bag extra heavy, and a zippered mesh side makes it quicker to organize clothes and accessories. Because Away thinks of everything, there is a foldable laundry bag that can hold even wet bathing suits or sandy shoes, perfect for that last swim on the beach before heading towards the airport. And do not worry about the safety of our valuables because the bag comes with a TSA approved lock that will keep all your things protected from the hands of strangers. $225 www.AwayTravel.com

GO PUCK 6XR CHARGER: When you are on the go, one of the most important travel essentials is a portable charger. They make it easier to take pictures and videos without having to stop or miss an important moment because the battery got drained. This Go Puck is a favorite because is slick and compact. It has two separate USB ports and enough power to fully charge a smartphone or digital camera up to six times before needing to be recharged. $99 www.GoPuck.com

HONEST SPF 30 STICK: I cannot go anywhere without protecting my skin from the harmful sun rays and pollution. This sunscreen comes in a moisturizing bar that gives you the barrier needed without making skin dry or chalky. The lightweight, water resistant formula glides on easily for a non-greasy and even application. The best part is that is made without chemicals, fragrances or parabens. $10 www.Honest.com

SABRE PERSONAL WRIST ALARM: Traveling to a new place can be a wonderful experience. However, if you are traveling alone, it can be daunting. Safety is very important and this adjustable water-resistant running alarm is ideal for outdoor activities and nightly sports while away or back at home. Just pull the metal ring and a piercing sound will alert anyone up to 300M, and scare off attackers or stalkers. The fabric is made of a reflective material so you can be easily found by help or law enforcement in case of an emergency or accident. $20 www.SABRERed.com

SPRAY PERFECT SPRAY ON POLISH: Hectic times call for extreme measures, and in those cases this spray on nail polish will come to the rescue of chipped or naked nails. It is by far the easiest thing to use and will keep your hands looking perfectly polished and beautiful. The set comes with two gorgeous colors, Racy Red and Passion Purple are my favorites, and a Base and Top Coat to guarantee a quick and lasting application. Just spray on the color, wash your hands, and be on your way. $20 www.BuySprayPerfect.com

ith 5.2m followers on Vine, 3.1m followers on Instagram, 298,096 YouTube subscribers and 806k Twitter followers, Jake Paul has taken the Internet by storm.

At only 19-years- old the talented star from Ohio has already earned a name for himself in Hollywood. Jake is a true chameleon, jumping from film to television and showing off his comedic acting skills on YouTube and Vine. He’s already earned a Shorty Award nomination in the category of Vineographer and of course you’ll recognize him from his many appearances on the Disney Channel. Most notably his TV series Bizaardvark, where he plays Dirk Mann. The show centers around two 13 year-old upand-coming musicians Paige, played by Olivia Rodrigo, and Frankie, played by Madison Hu, who write and perform comedic songs about their everyday lives. His daredevil character, Dirk, runs the webshow ‘Dare Me Bro’ where they create humorous videos after the viewers tell him and his crew what dares to perform. The budding actor sat down with BELLO to talk about his new found stardom and what lies ahead for the future. BELLO MAG: You’re only 19-yearsold but your fame appeared to be instantaneous. After setting up 35

your Vine account you reached 1 million followers in just 5 months. When did it all start to sink in for you?

BM: Apparently you’re known as ‘One Take Jake’ due to your ability to nail difficult scenes in only one take. Who came up with that nickname?

JAKE PAUL: It all started to sink in for me when I first met my fans in person. It was such an amazing experience and I was like OMG!

JP: Haha yes I am. The name came about one day of filming a pilot. Multiple people in the same day called me One Take Jake without knowing the others had said it. For that reason it just stuck with me to other sets that I go on.

BM: Prior to becoming a social media star and actor, you were a competitive wrestler and trained to be a Navy Seal. Do you still wrestle now? JP: I don’t wrestle anymore, however, I still workout all the time because I want it. BM: What else do you do in your spare time when you’re not working? JP: In my spare time I like to watch movies, go on adventures, and work on building up my truck! BM: What made you decide to launch a Vine account in the first place? JP: I saw Vine on Twitter and immediately downloaded it because all my friends were doing it and talking about it.

BM: Tell me a little bit about your upcoming project, Airplane Mode? JP: Airplane mode is the modern day version of the old school classic ‘Airplane’. You can also think of it as the ‘Expendables’ of social media. All the biggest social media stars are in it. I am a writer and executive producer of the movie, which was an awesome experience to be behind the scenes on a project for the first time. BM: Do you have a particular actor or social media star that you would like to work with in the future? JP: In the future I would love to collaborate with Drake. He is so influential and smart about his brand. I think we would get a long extremely well and make some flames content. September 2016 - BELLO

Magical Mahekal Beach Resort

T

BY DEE TRILLO Senior Travel and Lifestyle Editor| @HauteFrugalista| Dee@BELLOMag.com

he mysticism that surrounds Mexico makes it one of the most interesting places to visit. For centuries this country has been explored, researched, and studied by literates and travelers who wonder at the magnificent history and architecture that it has to offer, and Playa Del Carmen in the Riviera Maya personifies everything that this country is known for. Â Ancient archeological sites, ecological diversity, and unique gastronomic experiences are some of the many things you will get to experience here. They are also few of the reasons why we have chosen it as a Top Destination To Visit in 2016.

However, growing tourism in the vicinity of Cancun has threatened to turn this one-of-a-kind hidden treasure into an overcrowded hub, which is why choosing where to begin the trip is of the utmost importance. I feel confident that you will find Mahekal Beach Resort to embody everything that is needed to experience Playa Del Carmen the right way. Located in between the Mayan jungle and one of the best beaches in #133 issue - BELLOmag.com

the city, this retreat style resort will turn a regular vacation into a spiritual journey where reconnecting with one self and nature will be achieved organically and pleasantly.

The Balance Between Luxe and Artisan No detail has been left behind at this property where high-end touches and

locally inspired features perfectly meet in the middle. The location itself gives ample room for including the Mayan culture while maintaining a modern portfolio of services and amenities. In fact, is this delicate balance between the celebration of the past and the inclusion of the present what makes Mahekal Beach Resort truly magical. From the moment you arrive, you will find yourself inspired and revitalized. 58

Stone pathways and walls make the resort feel enticing and mysterious, while mesmerizing views of the Caribbean Sea bring a sensation of peace and calmness. Regardless of the time of the day you will enjoy a stunning unblocked view of the water ideal for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, tanning, napping, and anything else your heart and mind desires. This is especially true from Las Olas oceanfront infinity pool that spills into the horizon. Each of the pools has a purpose and style to please any type of moos. The dining experience is unique as every plate is made with locally sourced ingredients and crafted in a way that follows the ancient cooking styles.

Mayan inspired center is nestled between natural gardens reminiscent of an enchanted forest where the ultimate goal is to achieve inner harmony. Taken from the ancient Mayan philosophy that body and soul must work as one, their space is a sanctuary away from the noises of the world and the hectic pace of routine. Walking Distance Dining and Dancing

Las Olas, Fuego  and Cocina Restaurants have some of the finest traditional Mexican dishes I have tasted. I recommend the tropical ceviche, green chilaquiles, octopus in oregano oil, slow roasted grouper, guacamole with chili salt, mushroom crepes, smoke duck, thyme lamb, and the coconut shrimp. If you are feeling a bit adventurous, try the aguachiles and chili covered tamarinds. Do not forget to visit Boli’s Bar. Named after their beloved concierge, this full-service lounge is ideal for some low-key, yet fun times sipping on a margarita or mezcal.

However, do not think retreat means boring because the resort is everything, but that. There are fun bars and

thentic cuisine and international dining, outdoor bars and lounges, and Latin style dancing clubs. You will surely find something to do, eat or buy here. La Cueva restaurant and La Fisheria has some of the best food and ambience in the area without breaking the bank. Easy to navigate and in total walking distance, promised by someone who does not appreciate long walks, is a life saver when it comes to getting last minute gifts before departing to the airport.

Explore and Marvel In Natural Beauty There is a lot of sight-seeing to do in Playa Del Carmen. You can easily combine a romantic getaway with an outdoorsy itinerary, and enjoy the best of both worlds. Begin at the Vida Aquatica Dive Center at Mahekal Beach

Resort. There you can choose from different packages to snorkel in natural cenotes, visit marine life sanctuaries, plan a fishing trip, or venture off on night dives. I loved the day tour to the Mesoamerican reef, the second largest reef in the world, where we were able to swim with sting rays, colorful fishes, turtles, and an assortment of intricate corals. Venture off-property to explore even more. Here are top three things to visit in Playa Del Carmen: Spend the day in the Tulum Ruins: Known for their grandiosity and secrecy, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is an astonishing survival of time. The closer you get to the pyramids, the more details come to the surface that show us how complex the Mayan society was.

Beyond the idea that they sacrificed people, which I might add was an honor to them because only important people was chosen for that task, there is much more to learn and admire about their culture. Each symbol represents their perspective on time, the universe, and life. Through their concepts they teach us a valuable lesson and is that balance is the most important thing as it brings harmony to one’s life within ourselves and our surroundings. Meet your new besties at Delphinus Riviera Maya: One of the most amazing experiences I have had in my life has been interacting with dolphins at this sanctuary. This is not a place where you go and kiss a dolphin, take a picture, and leave. This is where you go to learn about their lives, how they interact, what are some of the issues they face on the wild, how to help conserve their species, and educate yourself about marine life. Their I belong, I learn, I reflect, and I commit philosophy, made them the 4th establishment in the world to earn the Humane Conservation certification by the American Humane Society as a safe haven for dolphins. They also entered the Guinness world record for most successful dolphin births where both mother and baby survived. With their motto: For a Brilliant Blue Planet, they have created a program that ensures the welfare of these animals, researches their habits and ill-

nesses to help them, and provides a safe environment where they can be healthy and happy. Small groups of visitors secure a better experience, and the state of the art labs showcase how the work goes behind training and maintain the habitat. So much to learn from these beautiful animals and their loving trainers. They prefer to be active and be playing. tion, contact stimulates them in a good way. The beauty of their program is that you get to interact with the dolphins, kiss them, dance with them, ride with them, and many more fun things, at the same time that you are provided with an invaluable learning moment about these wonderful creatures. Â You will leave the conservation center feeling happy and helpful, for they take great care of these animals and their habitat. Lastly visit the Mayan Underworld at Rio Secreto: Concealed from the

world, and only accessible through a hike of about 100 feet underground, Rio Secreto is one of the most spectacular excursions in the entire Yucatan Peninsula. In these caves, history is written through the depth and structure of the rock formations which have been slowly shaped by the ecosystem around it. It has taken millions of years for nature to accomplish such gorgeous and powerful natural sculptures, where the intensity of the environment makes you feel as if time stood still. Honestly, it is one of the most unique expeditions you could embark on where it does not mat-

I have to say that this is the first time that I feel that an activity has taken me back to my childhood. I was in a complete state of joy and happiness, so much that I giggled and smiled the whole time. My heart was filled with love for these kind animals, and for the opportunity to get to know them and befriend them. If this is not enough of a good example for you to take a chance on Delphinus, then how about the fact that they interact because their skin changes every two hours and touching helps getting rid of dead skin? At the same time that you will give them a hand on exfolia#133 issue - BELLOmag.com

ter how remote and secluded the area is because you can still feel the beauty of the Universe in each engraved wall that surrounds those caverns. Crystal clear water, although incredibly cold, is the perfect backdrop for these dramatic caverns. In the beginning a passage though cenotes and vegetation brings a familiar feeling, until you reach the profundity of the cave and find yourself surrounded by magnificent stalactites and stalagmites. Both bio phenomenons consist of the calcification of minerals and water mixed together through out an extensive period of time. However, the difference between them is that stalactites are shaped as pointy icicles and hang from the ceiling, while stalagmites form on the floor of the cave and most have rounded tips. However, they are both very delicate and prone to breaking, which is extremely important for the conservation group that directs this trip to make sure the formations remain as untouched as possible. What is most amazing is that life happens in these natural sculptures. Through the layers of water and miner-

al that come from rain or underground rivers, many fishes like the Blind Fish and Bats are able to sustain themselves and call this isolated space their home. By the end of this mile-long hike, and refreshing swim, you will feel connected with the atmosphere and emotionally rejuvenated.

There are many more sites to explore in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, and that is why we truly recommend making it a top choice for your next vacation.

As a note: I would personally advice not taking children under the age of 6 years old, unless they are extremely outdoorsy, as the path includes many sudden water declinations which can make anyone prone to minor incidents.
