My Love Affair With Shōchū BY MONA HOLMES @EatSocialFeedia

W

hen looking into the deep dark corners of the interwebs, I once learned about the five stages of relationships. They usually start with a “crush,” move on to something hot and heavy, and always end with a breakup or surrender of some kind. Izakaya & Bar Fu-ga

Therefore I am fully confident in applying this blueprint with my love affair of shōchū. However, shōchū is not a person. It’s not a man. It’s not rice wine nor sake. Shōchū is a distilled alcohol from Japan. And we’re in love.

Stage 1 - The Crush When was the last time you had one? Infatuation is a reminder that you’re alive, along with a serious attraction that you’re uncertain of. And upon my first sip at the Shōchū Night in L.A.’s #1234 issue - BELLOmag.com

Little Tokyo, I knew there was something special. Shōchū was flirting with me. This dalliance only intensified as we moved onto Stage II of our relationship.

Stage 2 - The Hot Affair Only 80 people RSVPed, but 209 of us squeezed into a back room at Izakaya & Bar Fu-ga, where I got to know shōchū a little better. We had an intense night of getting acquainted, which was helped by the coordinator of the Shōchū

Night in Little Tokyo, Toshio Ueno. As a master of Japanese spirits and food, Toshio became our chaperone on that first official date. He started by sharing about shōchū’s 54 ingredients (primarily sweet potato, barley and rice, Thai rice, and brown sugar cane. This process and additional ingredients (which varies from each shōchū maker) are what makes shōchū so smooth. We understood each other well after this, and I found my shōchū irresistible to the taste.

Stage 3 - Assimilation By the time Toshio poured another small glass, I was reminded of this next stage. The part where we move into the complexities of becoming intimate. Shōchū isn’t your average spirit. The distillation process is different than others. Toshio also taught me that shōchū can be fermented with koji mold or aged wood; it all depends on the maker. Toshio is in love with shōchū too. But he’s beyond simple infatuation. When I asked him about his adoration of shōchū, Toshio had a quick response.

“Flavor, of course! It’s closer to wine than any other spirit in the world. It’s distilled once - shōchū can go up to 20% alcohol content before distilling. For whiskey and brandy it’s 8-12 percent. When any spirit is distilled too much, drinkers just get ethanol. For shōchū, no need to do distill multiple times so it has more flavor.”

ing with a mixer, a 1.5 serving of hard liquor can add up to 100 calories per cocktail. If you substitute with shōchū, it’s only 30 calories. So it seemed like our union was perfect. Whether at home or at a bar, I could easily make shōchū a regular part of cocktail hour.

Shōchū is a calorie reducer in standard cocktail recipes as well. Before combin-

When maneuvering through each table at the Shōchū Tasting, I thought about a few things. Where would I buy shōchū? Would my friends have a sip if I offered it? Is it going to give me a heavy hangover? Will shōchū treat me well?

Stage 4 - Doubt

All valid questions in an early relationship.

Stage 5 - Bust or Surrender In this part of the process, the feelings of attachment are strong. But it’s time to figure out if this relationship can work in your life. There’s even an actual chemical attraction that draws the couple together. And I tried my hardest to resist, but this is real. In a single night, shōchū became my regular lover. I couldn’t choose the best one; they were all perfect in their own way. And there was even a good cause behind the tasting. Toshio Ueno’s event also doubled as a fundraiser, all proceeds going to the Kumamoto Japan Earthquake Relief Fund. Like I said, I’m in love. 9

orn and raised in Washington D.C. Dove Cameron has come a long way from the humble streets of Seattle. The multi-talented and bilingual media personality has achieved what most people haven’t in a lifetime at just 20-years-old.

The sensational millennial is a triple threat – model, actress and singer, which has lead the talented platinum beauty to score a role in the upcoming Hairspray Live! production alongside a stellar cast this December. You’ll also be able to see her on the big screen later this year with her sequel Descendants 2. The Disney Channel ingénue sat down with BELLO to talk about all her upcoming ventures and how she feels about her bevy of dedicated fans. BELLO MAG: One of your most iconic roles is playing Liv/Maddie on the Disney TV series Liv And Maddie. The show has been going since 2013 and you’re currently in your fourth season. How do you keep both your characters exciting? DOVE CAMERON: The challenge of playing two characters every day in and of itself is exciting for me. I’m never bored of the twins, because they’ve become such fully-fledged humans in my mind and I’m in the business of human emotion! I’ve definitely never stopped chipping away at them and carving them out to be more defined. They grow older and wiser as I do! Four years is a long time in terms of human evolution.

own sense of humor, which was really important and purposeful on my part because I think that individual humor defines a human in so many ways. Also: little physical habits. Those are really set in stone at this point. They’ve also become more comfortable with themselves as I have with myself. Little girls to young adults! BM: Do you personally relate to either of them in any way? DC: I relate to both in practically every way. I always say if you split my personality down the middle, you would get Liv and Maddie. That’s how they were created! I came up with the characters along side our show runners and producers and writers. They are extremes of both halves of me. BM: You have a very exciting project coming up, Hairspray Live! Congratulations on your role as Amber Von Tussle. How familiar were you with the character before getting this role?

BM: In the four seasons the show has been on the air, how do you think your characters have grown?

DC: Thank you so much! I have no words to describe how excited I am. I was a HUGE fan of both the movie and the musical. I actually saw it in theatres twice when it came out because I loved it so much. I’m also a huge Brittany Snow fan in general, so it’s a genuine honor to be playing this role.

DC: Both of the girls have become a bit less cartoony, quite a bit more finessed. They also have both developed their

Arno Diem GETTING TO KNOW THE MAN BEHIND THE LENS WORDS MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOS LESLIE ALEJANDRO

F

rom his cheeky semi-nude photos, to his amazing Musically posts and his smouldering selfies, it’s no wonder the French-born actor and photographer has racked up thousands of followers on social media.

#134 issue - BELLOmag.com

38

Meet Arno Diem, the 28-year-old who has spent many years in front of the camera but now wants to see life behind the lens. 39

Arno was interested in the acting world from a very young age, “I started first with music when I was five, I learnt the piano in the south of France and I did October 2016 - BELLO

dramatic arts which then led to singing. I also started modelling on the side and doing singing contests.” Apparently it all paid off as a young Arno was then scouted, “That’s when I got discovered. I was asked to do a TV show, a singing contest when I was 15. That led to another TV show that was the French version of American Idol when I was 17. That’s when everything became huge, it was the biggest show in Europe at the time. Every week we had something like 13 million viewers which is now impossible because of all the networks!” Although it may all sound glamorous, thing aren’t always as they appear. The over-exposure and attention he received weren’t necessarily warranted. “It was very intense. Even back then I don’t think I was ready for the attention and the craziness of it all, people started going to my house! That’s also why I changed my last name, so my little brother wouldn’t be bothered. It was a little crazy, I received crazy mail and inappropriate things were sent to me.”

His journey behind the camera had begun and after a while of making films, the 28-year-old was honoured at a film festival. “I won the best film for the Californian International Film festival in LA so I had to come here and do Q and A’s. A lot of people were like ‘I’d love to work with you, you should stay.’ Then I thought to myself ‘You know what I want to change my life.’ Not necessarily better or more, I just wanted a change.” Due to his budding LA friendship with actors Robbie Amell from CW’s The Flash, and his now fiancé Italia Ricci from CW’s Supergirl, he discovered BELLO mag. “I was staying with Italia and Robbie to find my feet. I did have a little moment of what am I doing? One day I was at Robbie’s just chilling and BELLO mag came over to shoot there.

Robbie was being shot for the magazine and my brother was like, ‘Oh you know that’s BELLO mag, I follow them on Instagram.’ I had no clue. And he was like, ‘Well it’s two French guys you need to get in touch with them.’” It seemed the budding videographer needed a little Dutch courage to approach them though. “One day I had maybe one or two glasses of wine and I was like you know what I’m going to try. So I emailed Alek and Steph and said ‘My brother follows you on Instagram, I think you follow them back. I don’t know if you need a videographer for your magazine but I would love to shoot behind the scenes.’ I didn’t expect an answer right away but he emailed back and he was like, actually why not, come by tomorrow we’re having a shoot.”

However things took a darker turn, which is when the French-born actor decided to take a bit of a backseat. “A sex tape was released of a random guy, but he named it after me and the guy kind of looked like me so it was a whole issue, lawsuit and everything! My parents had to get involved. It was all over the newspapers, people were discussing it on the Internet. That’s when I sort of removed myself a little bit. I love creating stuff and I love doing things but I wasn’t ready for what it came with. I loved doing it but I wanted to do it on my terms.” Despite loving some roles and enjoying the process and journey of becoming an actor, Arno always felt a certain comfort behind the lens. “I moved to New York for a bit to get away from it all. Then I went back to Paris and I discovered film. I felt really comfortable being on set but I would always hang out with the crew instead of hanging out with the other actors. I would ask them so many questions about what cameras they were using.” #1234 issue - BELLOmag.com

40

At the time Arno didn’t know who the talent was, but when he showed up on set apparently it was someone he knew pretty well... “I turned up and it was Ben McKenzie! It just so happens that after that big reality show I did in France when we were on tour I decided I wanted to learn how to speak English and the only DVD’s that I found to buy were The O.C., so I learnt English watching the O.C. on tour! I would watch it in French with English subtitles. I would pause and look in the dictionary. I’ve watched his episodes so many times! So when I turned up on set that day Alek was like we’re shooting this actor you might not know him and I thought to myself, should I tell him? And I thought no I’d pass off as a mental person! Like ‘I learnt English watching you! Haha.’” Being an actor and a videographer means that Arno has the best of both worlds and can seamlessly combine the two arts. He knows what it’s like on both sides of the lens. “I think the most important thing is I like to direct people the way I would have liked to have been directed. I know everybody has a different way of doing things. My thing is I like to tell actors that I’m invisible. If I see something and I want you to recreate it, I’m going to ask you to but my goal is to make myself invisible. That’s the thing I love the most is trying to make people feel comfortable enough so they can be themselves, rather than yelling at them or telling them what to do. Sometimes when I was acting I thought to myself ‘ OMG if you would just shut up I would be so much better!’” He went on to say that making people feel at ease is his main goal. “I personally believe that every single person can be on camera. I believe that you can capture something from anyone because everyone has a story. You have to make people comfortable enough so that they forget they’re being filmed. It’s just a matter of making them unaware of you, which is something I love to do. I’m like forget about me, I don’t exist.”

Leonardo da Vinci’s “DNA Staircase” Inside The Château de Chambord In France & The Secret Tunnel To His Own Private Home BY BRENT LAMBERT

The Château de Chambord

When the French captured Milan in December 1515, it brought an end to Leonardo da Vinci‘s three years spent living in a suite of rooms in the Vatican courtesy of his wealthy patron, Giuliano de Medici (brother of the new Pope Leo X). During these three years in Rome, da Vinci was surrounded with his close staff, as well as a few other legends: Bramante was building St. Peter’s, Raphael was painting the final set of rooms of the Pope’s new apartments, and Michelangelo was busy putting the finishing touches on Pope Julius II’s tomb. But as soon as the the French took Milan, da Vinci (65 at the time) left Italy forever and moved to France’s Loire #1234 issue - BELLOmag.com

Valley where he spent the final three years of his life. He moved there upon the invitation of France’s young King Francis I (22-years-old) to become “First Painter, Architect & Engineer to the King” (yes, that was da Vinci’s actual title). The King worshipped da Vinci’s genius, and allowed the artistic legend to work on whatever projects da Vinci’s heart desired, and he gave Leonardo the keys to his private residence -the Château du Clos Lucé in Amboise, France. Da Vinci came to his new home with his most devoted pupil, Melzi, and his three favorite paintings: Mona Lisa, Sainte Anne, and Saint Jean Baptiste. Da Vinci spent the bulk of his time editing his Treatise on Painting, his Treatise on Anatomy, as well as his many scientific studies. Although da Vinci did little painting in this time, he did spend considerable time working on his Visions of the End of the World series of sketches. “In [his Visions of the End of the World], Leonardo’s power of imagination -- born of reason and fantasy -- attained its highest level,” writes Ludwig Heinrich Heydenreich in Encyclopedia Brittanica. “Leonardo suggested that the immaterial forces in the cosmos, invisible in themselves, appear in the material things they set in motion. What he had observed in the swirling of water and eddying of air, in the shape of a mountain boulder and in the growth of plants, now assumed gigantic shape in cloud formations and rainstorms. He depicted the framework of the world as splitting asunder, but even in its destruction there occurs -- as the monstrously

‘beautiful’ forms of the unleashed elements show -- the self-same laws of order, harmony, and proportion that presided at the world’s creation. These rules govern the life and death of every created thing in nature. Without any precedent, these ‘visions’ are the last and most original expressions of Leonardo’s art -- an art in which his perception based on saper vedere seems to have come to fruition.” Leonardo da Vinci’s home, the Château du Clos Lucé, is connected by a secret tunnel to the royal Château d’Amboise, just 1,600 feet (500m) away. The spectacular Château d’Amboise is just one of 300 châteaux in the Loire Valley region -- with the grandest of all being the Château de Chambord. The Château de Chambord lies 32 miles (55km) east of da Vinci’s Château du Clos Lucé residence, and although it’s not within

walking distance like the Château d’Amboise, experts believe the Château de Chambord holds one of da Vinci’s masterworks of engineering and design -- a double helix “DNA” staircase. Leonardo da Vinci spent the last three years of his life at his Château du Clos Lucé residence, where he died in his bedroom on May 2, 1519 at the age of 67. I’VE NEVER BEEN MUCH OF A DANCER BUT THROUGH WORKING WITH ONE OF MY FAVORITE HUMANS, KENNY ORTEGA, ON THE DESCENDANTS FRANCHISE AND NOW THE INCREDIBLE JERRY MITCHELL ON HAIRSPRAY LIVE! I THINK I’M PICKING UP A MOVE OR TWO!

BM: You’ve said in the past that you’re not a ‘dancer’ per se, so how did you find incorporating the choreography of the dancing with the singing and acting?

have a lot of love and respect for what they did. I think we’re all excited to get our feet wet with this very singular format of live theatre!

DC: I’ve never been much of a dancer but through working with one of my favorite humans, Kenny Ortega, on the descendants franchise and now the incredible Jerry Mitchell on Hairspray Live! I think I’m picking up a move or two! Everyone has been so kind and generous with their time with me. I have set a goal to become a real dancer, now, being surrounded by all of this incredible talent! The universe is definitely throwing me Into some pretty educational environments!

BM: You also have a movie coming out next year, Descendants 2 the sequel to the first film. And of course you are reprising your role as Mal. Tell me a little bit about your journey in this film? How has your character grown or changed since the first one?

BM: There is an incredible cast for this production including Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Garrett Clayton, Derek Hough and Jennifer Hudson. What was it like working alongside all these amazingly talented people? DC: The talent level is UNREAL and I can’t stress that enough. I feel like I don’t fit in! The energy in the room when you first walk in and they’re all looking at you is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced. You can literally feel the talent and charisma! I don’t know how I got so lucky. And they’re all so kind! What a life! BM: The set up is very similar to the Grease: Live musical that aired on Fox earlier this year. What did you think of that production? DC: I did see Grease: Live it was beyond beyond! I had some friends involved, so I 63

DC: Yes! I am so excited for everyone to see the sequel. I am currently in Vancouver entering into the last 2 weeks of shooting and it’s very bittersweet. I can say very confidently on behalf of everyone involved that this movie is going to be 10x bigger and better than the first one, on every level. I come home every night feeling loved and creatively fulfilled, which is the dream. Mal has definitely changed and been thrown into a very erratic and insecure state that I can’t speak much on right now. You’ll just have to tune in and see next year! BM: Lastly, is there anything else you want to talk about or say to your fans? DC: I want to thank my fans for giving me the greatest life imaginable, and for giving me a reason to do what I do every day with confidence and love for myself and those around me. You guys are my motivation and the ground beneath my feet that lets me feel safe enough to fly. My family. Thank you for being there for me no matter what, I promise I will always be there for you! I love you with my whole heart, forever. October 2016 - BELLO
