An international fashion infusion BY: STEVEN CARVER

A

merican fashion has always been less formal in its style than that of its international counterparts. While the Italians are known for tailoring and the French for their trends, the westerners like to keep it casual due to their busy lifestyles. There’s a reason why it’s referred to as sportswear; the designs have to be flexible enough to be worn at work and play. Thankfully there are those who don’t like to wear yoga pants and a hoodie outside of the gym.

Considering the cultural melting pot of the United States, there haven’t been many non-American fashion designers who have made their mark on the scene. Should there be more of them? Can they blend a global point of view with a laid back vibe that doesn’t pander to the current athleisure movement? It’s not easy, but Alex Vinash incorporates a sense of effortless movement and elegance into his designs. Channeling his experience as a former Argentinian ice skating champion and professional skater into his work, Vinash’s collections regularly incorporate cuts and fabrics that are meant to move with the body. Clothing that is comfortable, yet contemporary, is a difficult feat to achieve. And his use of multiple textures and techniques (routinely using moulage, the draping of fabric on a mannequin to achieve the final design) gives Vinash a strong visual identity with each collection. Well-received showings in North America and Europe, and celebrity fans (Paris Hilton and Katharine McPhee) will only help with his recognition in the fashion world. Will fame go to his head? Never. Vinash is too focused on the end goal: growing as a designer, stylist and art director. ** #135 issue - BELLOmag.com

How would you describe your - ideal - customer/client? My ideal costumer is one who is very secure and knows what [she or he likes] to wear. It could be basic or extravagant, but my pieces blend both elements that pop on the wearer. I love to see my pieces being styled for the costumers because you can see how they think or how they feel [when they put it on]. What would you describe as a signature of your collection’s design/ style? The craftsmanship, materials and textures are my signature. Every piece has been touched by my hands and I have the final approval. All the looks have some couture-like touches: flowers, sequins, trims, and tulle skirts are all sewn by hand. Being someone who has traveled the world, do you think your aesthetic to be globally influenced? Yes, absolutely. I’m lucky to have been born in South America, lived 16 years in Europe and met different people from different cultures; it’s my main source [of inspiration]. Now, living in New York, it’s very different but I also get to see lots of interesting places and people.

What’s the most fun part of being a fashion designer?

more about them while they share with you their life experiences.

I love everything! But I guess when you see what you’ve been working on – for several months – in a collection ready to hit the runway… it’s amazing. I love the castings because I’m lucky to have so many wonderful models [working the clothes]. I love seeing the faces of people when the girls are walking. That’s a lot of fun. However, talking with the clients is great because you get to know

What’s not so fun? I don’t like selling to retailers; it’s one of the hardest jobs in fashion. I’m still learning, but it’s definitely one of the things that I definitely don’t love to do. You’ve already dressed famous women/celebrities, but are there any you still want to dress? I like to dress everyone, especially if they like my clothes. But, I’d love to dress Julianne Moore. I’m a big fan of hers. What are your thoughts on seenow-buy-now in fashion instead of producing/showing collections six months before they hit the stores? I think fashion is always changing and we need to be support that. It’s [motivating] because you need to speed up everything to be like trendy, fast fashion brands – Inditex, H&M, Mango, etc. So [designers] now have the opportunity to offer their fashions faster. There’s nothing wrong with that. With many designers being lured to work for other famous brands, is there a maison you would work for if offered the chance? Valentino. [Smiles]

lack is not simply a cromathic declination, it is not just a choice, it’s a whole philosophy. And when we say ‘dark’ we think about a whole range of feelings, that we can express through clothing. And in our editorial romanticism, strength, decadence are all mixed together for a final result in which dark becomes a fascinating, cool and elegant word.

Situated at the heart of downtown Taipei, a stones throw from the vibrant shopping mall, movies, and the city hall, with magnificent views of 101 Taipei, what was once the tallest building in the world. The hotel itself has an individual aura, decorated and inspired by artists from around the world. As you walk into the main lobby, you’ll see large circles of bright blue light, representing the raindrops in this tropical climate, and the water basin that Taipei sits within. The main reception area is situated on the 10th floor, along with the pool, the Kitchen Table restaurant, and the Woo Bar. You’ll be greeted by the fabulous W Welcome team, who’ll do their best to ensure your transition from the travelling storm, to relaxation, is made as smoothly and quickly as possible!

The Kitchen Table Restaurant Breakfast is served in the Kitchen Table restaurant. With my experience at other W properties around the world, I have to say that the breakfast quality and choice in Taipei is the best I experienced. From traditional Taiwanese classics, to worldly cuisines, take your pick, it really is a feast for everyone to enjoy. If you fancy something extra special for dinner, this is also served at The Wonderful Room

Kitchen Table restaurant, a buffet style, much the same as breakfast. The dinner menus offer everything from Indian cuisine, to Nepalese specials, and, of course, traditional Chinese foods, too. The 5* chefs will tailor certain dishes to your individual taste, making it extra special. From the finest, melt-in-your-mouth meat, to a dessert menu that would make all children faint, The Kitchen Table restaurant is more than you can ever expect. Even though the weather in Taiwan can be somewhat unpredictable at times, you may find yourself sat amongst the clouds one morning, but enjoying cocktails at the WET Bar come the afternoon. All the

Whatever the weather, the views across the city, and luxurious environment you find yourself cocooned within, makes for a stay you’ll never forget The rooms themselves come in all shapes and sizes, right up to the Extreme Wow Suite, which is basically a self-contained apartment at the top of the building. One of the nicest things to do, whichever room you choose, is to relax amongst the views across Taipei form your bed. Turn the lights off at night, open your double blinds, and enjoy the views. They really are fascinating, and will keep you mesmerized for some time.

The YEN Bar The YEN Bar, situated at the top of the hotel, offers a private area to enjoy a sophisticated, but relaxed cocktail or two. With an exceptionally peaceful aura, you can enjoy conversation amongst one of the best views in Taipei. Mixed by the W Mixologist, cocktails are supreme quali-

ymon, the it-girl on the rise whose pop-R&B debut single Say is making waves in the music industry. Her fresh sound brings a unique edge to the business, as she combines island grooves with pop melodies and urban lyrics. The talented artist spoke to BELLO about female empowerment, her musical idols and her favorite song to jam out to in the car.

BELLO MAG: For people that don’t know your style of music, explain your sound in five words.

BELLO BUZZ ROUND

SYMON: Pop, Sexy, fun, with a hint of urban and tropical influences!

Karaoke or a lip sync battle?

BM: Out of all the artists you say inspire you, Whitney Houston, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, N’Sync etc., who would you want to collaborate with the most and what song would it be to? S: I would absolutely die to collaborate with Gwen Stefani. I dream of having a session with her and writing a female power pop anthem! She is a goddess! BM: What is you favorite song to belt out to in the car? S: My favorite song to belt out in the car would probably be a Lady Gaga song! She is so damn passionate when she sings. Her and I would slay together in 101 traffic in my car! Hahaha. BM: If I were to look at your phone right now, what five artists would I see on your recently played list? S: If you looked on my phone right now the last few artists I have played would be Tory Lanez, Lady Gaga, G-Eazy, Dj Snake, Sia, and Dua Lipa. BM: If you could open up for any artist on tour right now who would it be? S: If I could open for any artist on tour right now I would die to open up for SIA. She is the most incredible singer and songwriter. BM: Your favourite song of 2016 so far? S: My favorite song of 2016 so far would be One Dance by Drake. That track was straight fire plus Drake has such amazing tone! 33

Y

ou might remember her as the bright eyed, bushy tailed aspiring songwriter who ventured to the Big Apple… But ended up working at a provocative all female bar, flirted with her male patrons and danced on tabletops with Tyra Banks.

Well, Piper Perabo has come a long way since her Coyote Ugly days. That film certainly put her on the mark, and it’s no surprise given the talented cast, but sixteen years on the Texas-born beauty is part of ABC’s hottest new drama, Notorious. The show is inspired by a true story, specifically the relationship between Wendy Walker, former producer at Larry King Live, and criminal defence attorney Mark Geragos. The show gives a provocative look into the ethically questionable relationship between lawyers looking for great clients and the media looking for great stories. Piper plays the very strong willed and independent TV news producer Julia George, while Daniel Sunjata plays Jake Gregorian, the character inspired by Mark Geragos. Playing a strong female in this industry was something the blonde beauty was very excited about, “I had been doing this show called Covert Affairs, which I did for five years where I played a rookie CIA, although that was very fun and a great drama I kind of wanted to play a boss after playing a rookie. So I was looking for a smart strong female character.” The fact that her character was inspired by a real woman was more than enough to get her on board. “When I read the script and they said it was based on a real person I went out and got Wendy’s book and read through it all and I thought, oh yes this will be an interesting and challenging boss to play.” The actress revealed that on the surface her character might come across as this strong, autonomous female, but if you look closely there are certainly more layers to peel back. “When you meet someone that powerful and that smart and that confident with that clear goal in mind, it’s nice to see a kind of a light touch to her. She’s so clear that she’s in control, she doesn’t have to quote on quote ‘be a boss’, she’s already in power, so there’s a lightness to her, which I think, is really interesting to play. I think she’s an incredible person and she’s working in a difficult industry, so I look up to those women.” The chemistry between Julia George and Jake Gregorian in the show is inescapable. Their flirtatious work relationship has been getting fans talking about whether or not this could turn into something romantic. Piper was quick to shed some light on this. “You know I think it can be lonely at the top. They are both very good in their fields of work and I think there is a spark between them but Julia has to be very careful. She relies on their relationship and the contacts he can bring in for her. It’s a very fine line.” We couldn’t go through the whole interview without giving a nod to her iconic 2000 character, Violet Sanford. Piper was a mere 23-years-old when Coyote Ugly came out and it was a classic case of life imitating art. “That’s a perfect example of playing a fish out of water rookie. She had no idea where she wanted to go, she was out there supporting herself, she didn’t have any friends in the city. She was the ultimate rookie. I can relate to that because when I started out in New York I didn’t know anyone in the industry. It was hard to get a waitressing job let alone trying to break into Hollywood. I think I can relate to her to because she worked relentlessly hard in order to fulfil her dream and make it her career.”
