Her latest role is a step away from the usual dramas we tend to see however. She plays Julia in Syfy’s The Magicians where she revealed all she could about season two of her hit show. When trying to explain the basic premise of The Magicians, the young beauty struggled to find the right words, “Oh my gosh where to begin? It’s such a crazy trip! It’s based off this trilogy science fiction genre, which they’ve now adapted for television.” She plays a very deep and complex character, “Julia [her character] starts out as this upper class, wealthy, straight-A intellectual. However, we then get to see this epic downfall and this tragic journey that this woman endures. She’s kind of like the girl we all went to school with, you think she has everything together but she doesn’t really.” We are well into season 2 now so the budding actress shed some light on where her character is now after all her horrific and traumatizing experiences. “Season 2 is the journey of her coming back to herself, to figure out after all of those horrible things, how do I navigate and figure out who I am at the core of all of this? Is she driven from rage or fear, can she move forward? So yeah she goes through all these wacky quests to find herself.” She said the show has some lighter moments but ultimately it’s getting deeper, “We get to play with moments of lightness but I definitely think it’s darker. Just when you think nothing worse can happen to her, it does. She’s sort of socially inept. The show is a great metaphor for life, it takes on genuine situations that people can relate to.” Aside from The Magicians Stella has also dabbled in movies. She said the most enjoyable character she has ever played was a struggling young girl called Melissa. “My favourite was a character in Starlet, she was a porn star addicted to pain killers who lived in the San Fernando Valley. It was wonderful working with Sean Baker, he’s just one of the most amazing directors ever. I wouldn’t tell anyone to watch any of my work ever, except for this one film.” With awards season in full swing the brunette beauty did admit she hasn’t been massively keeping up to date with it all but there is one film in particular that caught her eye. “I loved Nocturnal Animals, so incredible. I did feel like it was a cliff-hanger I did have that reaction but then I thought Kudos to them because that’s what life is, there are no definitive answers.”

How did you get into acting? I was drawn to all forms of storytelling from a very young age. Film and Television was primarily what I was exposed to as a child. There’s a list of movies that are nostalgic to me, that inspired me to want to pursue this. They sparked something in me and I can still remember that feeling that I had as a wishful little boy wanting to experience the adventures the kids in the movies were experiencing. So, I always wanting to act as a kid, but growing up in western Pennsylvania, that want felt more like a dream than a reality. It was unfamiliar and seemingly unrealistic to #146 issue - BELLOmag.com
nearly everyone I would speak to about it. When I was in high school, I had a drama teacher - Julianna Van Arsdale - who was possibly the first person I remember encouraging me to pursue that dream. I got a lead in the school play that year. It was Tom, in The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams. I found it to be a challenging undertaking for a high school senior. I made a decision to quit baseball that year to focus on the play. Anyone who knows me well would tell you that was a big deal to me. Because I loved baseball. Still do. I’m pretty sure that’s when my Mom new I wasn’t kidding around any-
more about pursuing acting. After that, I went to school for theater. Moved out to Los Angeles. Did the grind. And was fortunate enough to experience a childhood dream of mine turn into a reality. You play James Nava in Shades of Blue alongside stars like Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta. Tell us a little about this role, what were some the challenges that you faced? Nava is an A.D.A. who represents a potential love interest for Jennifer’s character, Harlee Santos. He’s all about justice. He’s well intentioned, wants 30
to do the right thing. There is an honor, an integrity in the character, that I love. And in a show like this - where many of the other characters are walking this tight rope between right and wrong, and the audience can never really be sure which side they’re gonna fall toward, if any - Nava, represents a moral compass for the show. For the most part, we know clearly where he stands. And I think, in many ways, he represents the kind of human I respect and hope to emulate. --- As far as the challenges I’ve faced playing the role... I don’t know, I’d have to say... trusting that I am enough. This role has been very different than many of the characters I’ve played in film and television. I’ve played a lot antagonistic characters, which are fun. I’ve played a lot of characters that are... how do I express this..? Aggressively expressive with their emotions. And there’s been a comfort, a security in that for me. With Nava, many times, I don’t have that to hide behind. I have to do less. He still feels. But he expresses himself differently than most characters I’ve played. And the most challenging thing for me when I play this role, is trusting that I am enough, just as I am. And that, well... that has been the story of my life. In all the work you have done, which character have you played that you personally felt most connected to and why? I don’t know... It’s my job is to bring myself to every character I play. Elements of me have to be present. So, I don’t approach it with that idea of separation. You know? Because... well... as an actor, I have to assume the role. As in, I am the character. Not, how do I, Gino, feel about the character. Instead, I am constantly personalizing it. Putting myself in these imaginary circumstances and being as truthful as I can be. There are many times when I have fallen into the trap of judging the character. And that’s actor death. Or playing an idea of what I feel a character is like. And in those instances, I’ve been disappointed with my work. So I do my best not to do that anymore. 31
What shows are you watching right now?
Nava was out of my comfort zone. Still is. Part of it was me doing that faux pas of judging the role saying, “he’s a I just finished Goliath. Loved it. Binged leading man” coupled with the self-depon Stranger Things. That was fun. Currecating human in me saying, “you’re rently, I’m watching Black Mirror, which not a leading man”. And what an awI feel is incredibly smart, educational, ful way to speak to oneself, you know? innovative, timely, and entertaining stoBut I don’t, most of the time, feel like a rytelling. of inspiration throughout my entire life. They have motivated me. They have shown me who I want to be, and who I don’t want to be. They’ve been a source of education. A source of laughter. They’ve shown me uncomfortable truths. And there have been so so many. Movies have been a character in my life. A friend. A teacher. A companion. I really am fortunate that I get to do this... If you were not an actor what line of work do you think you would be in? It’s funny... There was a time when I could only imagine myself being an actor, writer, director or a baseball player. That was it. For a long time. I don’t feel that way anymore. I love acting, but it’s not everything. It’s something. Something that I love. About 6 years ago or so, maybe 7, something shifted --- I don’t know what. It was around that time in my life that they call your Saturn’s Return. I don’t know, look it up. Anyway, something changed and suddenly I could see myself doing many, many things. I had interests in things that I never found interesting. I wanted to see and feel and experience things that I never imagined I would. I don’t know... I don’t know specifically what job I would do. If I had to narrow it down... I might say teaching. There’s also a part of me that feels drawn to acts of service. If you could go back in time and relive one full day of your life what would it be? Wow... What a cool question... that’s... thought provoking. What comes up for me, well... It’s so interesting to think about because nothing is the same the second time around. But... One of my best friend’s died a few years ago. I remember... I remember I was having an awful day. I was driving two of my friends home from our Artist’s Collective, at the time. One of them was my friend that died. I was so emotional over what had transpired at that meeting, earlier that day. So emotional, I couldn’t drive. I had to take a minute and just feel what I was feeling. I was #146 issue - BELLOmag.com

I’d live that day again. I’d feel that pain again. Just to see my friend again and feel that hug again. What’s next for you?

see. I have some things that I am presently working on - I’ve optioned some intellectual property that I’d like to produce and maybe direct. But other than that, I am doing my best these days not to think or live in the future. If I’m there, I can’t be here. So... there’s that.

THE MARVELOUS GREGG SULKIN WORDS MICHELLE GANNEY
GREGG SULKIN STARTED OUT AS A BELOVED DISNEY STAR PLAYING SELENA GOMEZ’ LOVE INTEREST ON WIZARDS OF WAVERLEY PLACE. WELL NOW THINGS HAVE BECOME EVEN MORE MAGICAL FOR THE 24-YEAR-OLD LONDON-BORN ACTOR AS HE HAS JUST BEEN CAST AS ONE OF THE LEADS IN HULU’S NEW MARVEL SHOW RUNAWAYS. FROM THE CREATORS OF GOSSIP GIRL, JOSH SCHWARTZ AND STEPHANIE SAVAGE LEAD US INTO THE SUPERHERO WORLD THAT CENTERS ON A GROUP OF SIX TEENS WHO DISCOVER THEIR PARENTS ARE PART OF AN EVIL CRIME ORGANIZATION. AFTER AN AMAZING PHOTO SHOOT IN BEVERLY HILLS, BELLO MAG SAT DOWN WITH THE VERY TALENTED SULKIN TO TALK ABOUT HIS NEWEST VENTURE INTO THE MAGICAL UNIVERSE OF MARVEL.
It must be any actors dream to enter the Marvel world and join forces such as Deadpool, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Captain America. Well it seems that was exactly the case for Sulkin as he admitted, “when I got the call, honestly I kind of jumped for joy.” As you might have guessed, the process to getting such a coveted role was just as secretive as you might think, “before Christmas I auditioned and it was one of the those auditions where you have to sign a bunch of NDA’s and I couldn’t get my hands on the script. I didn’t know what it was or who was behind it. I just knew it was an audition that every kind of actor wanted to audition for.” Despite being kept in the dark for quite some time, it seems Sulkin had a good feeling from the get go, “I was pumped, you know I’m always grateful and I’m
45
always excited but I think this one had an extra flavor to it. This is a show I really wanted. Then when I found out Josh and Stephanie were involved, you know they did Gossip Girl, The O.C. and Hart Of Dixie, and that it was Marvel as well, I mean I was just like ‘okay well this is a perfect mix. I have to do this.’” Sulkin’s character is a high school student called Chase Stein who comes from a very wealthy family. He described his situation as, “he’s battling through high school and dealing with this façade of ‘I’m not that perfect, I’m dealing with issues at home that no one knows about.’ He kind of feels ashamed to share that with the world. And of course, like any teen drama Chase is a hunky lacrosse player in high school, so the minute Sulkin found that out he hit the gym almost immedi-
ately, “I had a feeling my shirt would be coming off a lot...so I had to say goodbye to the cookies and hello to the protein!” Seriously, go check out his Instagram stories (@greggsulkin) You’re welcome... The up and coming cast seem to be gelling pretty well too, “everyone is amazing, everyone’s been performing so well. It’s the best, I’ve genuinely gained like five new best friends. I’ve honestly been so impressed with everyone.” Aside from Marvel, the budding 24-yearold has a lot of other projects on his plate. He recently starred in the gritty drama Anti-Social opposite Suits actress Meghan Markle. This was a huge steer away from anything he’s ever done before, “that was a really challenging role for me because in that film I played a graffiti artist who was kind of on the wrong side of the tracks. For me

too gory, it’s more a suspense film.”
Another dark film the former Disney star is in is a thriller called Don’t Hang Up, which he has high hopes for, “I was actually really pumped with the movie, it turned out really well. I think the movie’s going to gain like a cult following.”
He had nothing but praise for his award-winning directors too, “I just think that working with Damien [Mace] and Alexis [Waisbrot], my two French directors who have won Oscars for visual effects in the past, that kind of put a really nice spin on it. I think this film has a really unique and fresh feel to it that I think you’ll see when you watch it. They took some risks with the film and I thought they did that really well.”
He did admit it wasn’t easy getting into character though, “that shoot was brutal, it was like eight weeks on the same set, with the same people, with the same actors and there was a lot of dark material. It’s full of suspense, it keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s not
Of course we couldn’t get through the interview without talking about his dedicated and multiplying fan base. Boasting 3.3m followers on Instagram and 1.12m followers on Twitter, it’s no wonder Sulkin is hoarded by girls daily, “I was on set today and we were shoot-

ing at a high school and I don’t think about that too often but I got swarmed by like 200 girls and it is so genuinely humbling.” The endearing actor continued to highlight his modesty and humility, “I still think it’s kind of crazy that people support me but I am so appreciative of them all. They’re always so sweet, they’re always so nice and it’s great being able to share and grow with them. With my career, I think I’ve grown with my fans and kind of matured as an actor as they’ve matured.” When asked what he wanted to say to his fans he simply said, “Thank you for having my back and for supporting me, I still don’t know why they do.”

How social media changed the modeling industry forever: with international model Mark Norris WRITTEN AND CREATED BY MARK NORRIS
Social media is everywhere – there’s no use in writing a long introduction on how crucial it is in today’s world, seeing as you probably found this post through social media. The modeling industry is one world that has changed completely, and it isn’t through an easy ability to post selfies.
No one batted an eye when Gigi Hadid was named Models.com’s Readers Choice Model of the Year – except maybe a few people (myself being one of them). Hadid walked in only eight shows during fashion week, while some models such as Alexandra Elizabeth have walked up to 67 shows. Other models, like Rachel Finninger, walked in 26 shows. So how was Hadid labeled the model of the year, when she didn’t even walk a fraction of the shows that other models did? The answer is simple: social media. Hadid has over 11 million Instagram followers and Kendall Jenner has 46 million. One simple Instagram shot of their look backstage, and that means millions of hits for the brand that hired them – which means millions of dollars as well.
Regardless, shows are still now cast with social media in mind. Model Rachel Finninger commented that it’s all about branding, “Every model who wants to make it big has to create a brand around themselves. Are you going to be the funny one? The ‘I-don’t-take-myself-too-seriously’ one? … Or the ‘super-skinny-super-foodie’ gal. It’s exhausting trying to find your niche and build a brand around it.” The raw look, alone, is not good enough to break the model scene in 2017.

Models.com’s Industry Model of the Year, however, was Anna Ewers. The award for Industry Model of the Year is voted on by 250 fashion professionals, from make-up artists to casting directors. Those professionals elected someone unknown by the general public as their superstar, and I’d take their opinion. The model of the year award that Hadid won was selected by popular vote – say, her Instagram followers. Hadid also won Choice Social Media star on Models.com. 55

Let’s begin with the super cool vintage design. It is very reminiscent of the old school classic cameras which is a bit of fresh air in a market saturated with overly futuristic designs. I mean, it is nice to feel as if you are traveling back in time without having to sacrifice modern technology features. And let me tell you that this mini camera packs some serious power, not to mention a rechargeable battery. It comes with a built-in flash that prevents having to deal with dark pictures. After all: it is a once at a time deal, so you have to be mindful of how you shoot. Now, it does not mean you cannot play with it. Especially since there are films with all sort of fun designs like rainbow colors, monochromatic, Hello Kitty, comics, and many more. #146 issue - BELLOmag.com

Let’s take a closer look at ten Chinese fashion designers you should know.
