CW’s newest series, Riverdale, stars 22-year-old newcomer Madelaine Petsch who plays Queen Bee Cheryl Blossom. The teen drama has been receiving rave reviews so we thought it was only fitting to speak to the star of the show to get all the juicy gossip.

BELLO MAG: You play one of the leads, Queen Bee Cheryl Blossom, on the new CW show Riverdale. This is your first big TV show, congrats! What was the process like getting to this point? MADELAINE PETSCH: Thank you! I’m so excited and still pinch myself daily. I mean, I’ve known what I wanted to do since I could talk, so it’s just been a lot of time and hard work. I moved to LA straight out of graduating my arts high school and worked three jobs to afford living while taking acting classes and auditioning often. I started building up relationships the more I went into the same rooms to audition at the same time becoming more confident in my craft. Finally, in the last year before Riverdale I was able to just focus on auditions and learning. I ended up auditioning for David Rapaport, Riverdale’s amazing casting director, and he immediately knew I would be a good fit for Cheryl. BM: What’s it like playing the sassy villain type? What are your favourite qualities about her? MP: I love playing Cheryl, it’s always something fun, new and exciting. My favourite parts about Cheryl are all her layers. She may be the villain, but she’s also so emotional and really just young, insecure and trying to find herself while hiding behind this curtain. Meanwhile trying to cope with the loss of her only ally (Jason) and now being stuck in a home alone with her parents who don’t love her or care about her. She’s so complex and has some of the best sassy one-liners. 9

BM: What can you say about her character development this season? MP: She starts as this ruthless mean girl and then you learn more about her family life and how she deals with the loss of her twin brother, the only person she ever loved or trusted. Cheryl’s façade gets pulled away little by little and you really find this broken little girl, lashing out at people because she’s truly lonely. Not a side you get to see of the villain very often. BM: Are we going to find out what happened to her twin brother Jason Blossom by the end of the season? MP: Yes you are. BM: What are the cast relationships like when the cameras aren’t rolling? Do you guys watch every week’s episode together? MP: We are like one big family on and off set. We do watch the episodes together when we are in the same cities and have an on-going group text message all the time! BM: Fans have gone wild for your beautiful red hair! Is it natural or did you have to dye it for the show? MP: Au naturale. Got it from my mama haha. So funny too, I hated it when I was a kid and now I feel like it’s one of my favourite physical attributes. BM: So your character Cheryl is very made-up and she loves her red lippy. What is your make-up style like when you’re not acting?

MP: When I’m not on set I’m either fresh faced to give my skin some breathing time or if I’m going out I prefer more of a nude palette, usually a mauve lip and some light brown eyeshadow! BM: Do you prefer having make-up artists or do you like doing it yourself? MP: When I haven’t done my own makeup in a while because I’ve been working a lot then I miss doing my own but then when I’ve been doing my own for a while I miss getting it done. Grass is always greener! BM: If you had to change up your hair in some way, dye, cut, style etc. (and you were allowed to) what would you do? MP: I’m pretty fond of my hair the way it is, that being said I guess I wouldn’t mind changing up the style a bit so it wasn’t SO much maintenance. I know if my hair stylist is reading this he will be nodding and saying “I told you so”. BM: What can you tease about the episodes to come on Riverdale? MP: There are so many unexpected twists and turns it’ll make your head spin ;) Oh and Cheryl goes off the deep end. That’s all I can share! BM: Is there anything else you want to share with your fans? MP: Just that I can’t thank them enough for all their love and support! They truly are the best. March 2017 - BELLO

HOMELAND’S

Patrick Sabongui PHOTOS BY: ELIZABETH DELAGE

#147 issue - BELLOmag.com

20

A devoted advocate for diversity and equality in the arts and media, actor Patrick Sabongui can currently be seen in season six of Showtime’s Award-Winning series “Homeland”. Patrick plays Reda Hashem, a CUNY School of Law professor, advocate for the Muslim-American Community and Carrie Mathison’s (Claire Danes) new right-hand man. Patrick is also a series regular on the Sony/Crackle series “The Art of More” starring Dennis Quaid and Kate Bosworth, plays a recurring character on The CW’s “The Flash”, and can be seen in the upcoming feature films POWER RANGERS and DRONE.

21

Tell us more about your character in The Flash, and how important you think it is to portray minority characters in today’s world?

Can you explain to our international audience why The Art of More is so important for you, and what makes it such an interesting show?

I feel very lucky to be playing Captain David Singh on CW’s The Flash – and I have to commend the teams at CW and DC, especially Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns for being leaders in the creation of diverse characters in The Flash universe. Singh is captain of the Central City Police Department, but he’s also a close friend to Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), a husband, something of a father figure to Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and a pillar of the Central City community. Part of what makes Singh so interesting to me is that he is so many things to so many people. He’s not just a token character. He’s a complex human being with a job and personal life, strengths and weaknesses, relationships and struggles. In today’s divided world, it’s not enough to have diversity for diversity’s sake – now more than ever; it’s crucial to represent diverse people in mainstream media as more than just one-dimensional characters. Until the term “minorities” no longer exclusively refers to someone who isn’t white, straight and male, I see it as one of the most important responsibilities I have as an artist: to humanize and accurately represent characters of different cultural backgrounds, different sexual orientations, different abilities and different persuasions. It’s important for people – especially children - to see themselves in the shows they watch.

The Art of More is an original series created by Chuck Rose, produced by Sony/Crackle. It exposes a world that is seldom explored – the world of highend art auctions in New York City. It follows art collectors, art dealers, artists, smugglers, criminals and millionaires as they scheme, plot and hustle to get their hands on valuable- sometimes priceless- artifacts. What I find particularly interesting about the show is how it includes characters from different worlds. I play Hassan Al Afshar, an Iraqi engineer who has lost everything in the war and is now struggling to create a life for himself and his family in the United States. The only opportunity he has left is to rekindle a smuggling operation he and his partner, Graham Connor (Christian Cooke) established when Connor was a US soldier stationed in Iraq. It’s an important show for me because it shows how a good man can be driven to bad deeds out of necessity. It provides an interesting perspective on how people from wartorn regions like the Middle East can be cornered into elicit activities without being politically or religiously motivated. Your character choices are pretty eclectic, how do you make them? I’m in love with life. The incredibly broad range of people, ideologies, experiMarch 2017 - BELLO

ences and mentalities that exist in our world fascinates me. Becoming an actor was my way of exploring as much of life as possible. Every time I get a new audition, I get excited about the potential to learn something new about the world we live in. I try to choose characters that will shed light on some aspect of humanity that I may be less familiar with. And I try to avoid characters that reinforce stereotypes or that engage in gratuitous, inhumane behavior – we just don’t need any more of that in mainstream media.

You are amazing in Homeland. How difficult is it to become a part of the team, when you join so late in the series?

cluded me in some very important discussions early in the process and that created a great working dynamic that set the tone for the rest of the season.

Oh, thanks! That’s kind of you to say. Becoming part of the team wasn’t difficult at all. Everyone there is so talented, intelligent and kind, and they treated me like a peer right from the beginning. They are storytellers first, and as a storyteller myself we speak the same language. Alex Gansa (show creator) and Lesli Link-Glatter (EP, director) in-

What are the hardest and the most exciting things about being part of Homeland? The hardest part of being on Homeland was being away from my wife and kids for six months – but at the same time, being in NYC was one of the most exciting parts of being on Homeland. It was a dream location for a dream job. And working with Claire Danes was a pleasure. She’s so good, so generous and passionate – she elevates everyone’s work. What I appreciate most about playing Reda Hashem is what he stands for. He is a fierce advocate for the Muslim community and a defender of the wrongly accused. In today’s increasingly polarized world, it’s a gift to play a character that stands up for justice and fights against injustice. Homeland is a controversial show that puts itself right in the middle of current political issues – that’s another exciting thing about being on this show. It’s been heavily criticized for its portrayal of Muslims and Arabs, so I welcomed the opportunity to take part in that conversation. Reda is at the heart of the ongoing debate about how the US intelligence gathering apparatus treats Muslims here in the US, and abroad. Let’s introduce our audiences to the Fulfilling Young Artists project. Thanks for asking about FYA! Fulfilling Young Artists (www.fulfillingyoungartists.com) is a non-profit mentorship program for young actors. It’s a free program that pairs twenty young actors with twenty experienced professionals for six-months of guided mentorship. The goal of the program is to direct everyone’s energies towards finding fulfillment in their work. In this industry, too much attention is placed on seeking validation from outside one’s self: getting an agent, booking work, competing for roles or scoring that big gig. Not enough attention is placed on becom-

ing an artist, finding your unique voice and looking for rewards in the work that come from doing things you believe in. We want to empower young actors to claim ownership of their artistry and to use their craft to be creative, contributing members of society in a way that is meaningful to them. We’ve found that guiding young actors to focus on fulfillment rather than employment helps them carve a positive, productive and sustainable journey for themselves.

Tell us about a project you have coming up that you are excited about? There are two projects I’m very excited about: I recently completed a feature film called “Drone” directed by Jason Bourque starring myself, Sean Bean and Mary McCormack. I play Imir Shah, an Indo-Pakistani man whose wife and daughter are killed by a US drone strike. He discovers who the pilot is who flew the drone mission and he comes to America to confront his family’s killer. I just saw the finished film and it’s beautiful, topical and thought provoking. I’m eager to hear the conversations it’ll inspire. I also just produced a short film called “The Prince” (@PrinceShortFilm) about a young-tap dancer and her uncle, an actor, who are struggling with what it means to be Middle-Eastern American in today’s racially divided world. It was written and directed by the multi-talented Kyra Zagorsky (who I am lucky enough to be married to) and it stars our two children, Ashé and Bodhi, and an outstanding performance by Lee Majdoub. It’ll be hitting the festival circuit this year.

She is a culinary wizard in the kitchen and a master celebrity private chef. So we thought who better to interview in the New Year than Vikki Krinsky? She has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry including Tobey Maguire, Katherine Heigl and her current client is Family Guy creator and impressionist legend Seth MacFarlane.

The talented professional has been nicknamed The Athletic Chef because of her focus on both nutrition and fitness. She most recently starred on the Emmy Nominated show, Recipe Rehab, which she dished all about in her exclusive interview with BELLO. When you decided to become a chef after your trip to Paris, how did that

evolve into becoming a celebrity chef? When I returned to LA after 5 months abroad, I started working as a personal trainer at a very ‘celeb’ oriented gym. I met a restaurant chef whose wife was starting up a celebrity private chef company with the well-respected personal trainer, Harley Pasternak called The

When I first started as a chef, I felt very confident in my ability to learn, my work ethic and my energy in their homes but I was teaching myself as I went along, so yes, of course there were definitely moments where I had to almost bull**** my way through! Talk me through what a day in the life of Vikki looks like? • I wake up at 7:15 am and immediately take the next 10 minutes to focus on all that I have and all that I am grateful for. I try to visualize how I want the day to play out and then I hit the gym! • After my workout, I head to the grocery store and then up to my kitchen. • I make Seth breakfast, and then start prepping lunch and afternoon snacks. • I usually drive his lunch to his office and then I have two hours to myself. I like to use that time to work on the other areas of my career and building my platform.

31

March 2017 - BELLO

• At 5:30pm I head back to my kitchen and start preparing dinner. I’m usually done around 8/8:15 and then I head home to my fiancé where I then make him dinner! What are your favourite meals to make for breakfast, lunch and dinner, if you have lots of time to prepare? Breakfast: Souffles or I like to experiment with healthy alternative (nut flour) pancakes Lunch: HUGE fan of coming up with “leftover” dishes. Reusing ingredients and cutting them differently, or applying a different technique to them, always excites me. For example: Sous vide chicken breast from the night before, I would butterfly and then stuff with a goat cheese/spinach mixture, roll up and tie with a chive served with a bright herbaceous salad. Dinner: I really enjoy making pizza and playing around with the crust AND the filling. I like making cornmeal crusts and pureeing different types of veggies as the sauce. For example: A cornmeal crusted pizza with a roasted red pepper sauce, lots of fresh spinach, blanched broccoli florets, crispy garlic and shredded manchego cheese. What would you say your most sought after dish is? Either, my turkey flaxseed meatballs, or my very famous SEEDY OLIVE OIL CAKE or my BLACK BEAN CHOCOLATE CAKE. With the New Year everyone’s trying to be healthier. What are some yummy but healthy snacks you like to make? • I love making my own energy balls out of an array of unsalted mixed nuts, coconut oil, chia seeds, soaked dates and unsweetened cocoa powder. • Lettuce wraps are a fun vehicle to slice raw veggies and wrap up with #147 issue - BELLOmag.com

lettuce, dipped into balsamic vinegar or a yogurt/dill dipping sauce! • I also love to melt 88% dark chocolate and dip strawberries in that and serve one large chocolate dipped strawberry with a cup of coffee. What is your favourite vegetable and how do you cook and prepare it? Cauliflower. Simply roasted with garlic, olive oil and lots of fresh thyme! You’re currently on Recipe Rehab, do you find it challenging trying to 33

recreate high-calorie recipes into low-calorie meals? Not in the least. It’s my passion! What food is your guilty pleasure? And if you had to adapt it so it was a healthy low calorie dish, how would you do this? Cheese pastry baby!! Adapt it? Do I have to!? I prefer to enjoy every bit of it because it’s about balance remember!?! You gotta live a little Beeeellllooooo :) March 2017 - BELLO

Retreat To

Aruba

BY DEE TRILLO Senior Travel and Lifestyle Editor| www.Instagram.com/HauteFrugalista| Dee@BELLOMag.com

The Caribbean country has been coined “One Happy Island” and with very good reasons. Surrounded by white-sand beaches and lush palm trees, this piece of heaven on earth is outside of the “Hurricane Belt”, and therefore counts with perfect weather for most of the year.

This makes it an ideal place to vacation, honeymoon, or get married without having to plan around a specific season, making Aruba a Top Destination To Visit In 2017!

Stellaris Casino is an escape from the hectic world we live in. A place where time passes by slowly, the moon sleeps above the water, and the warm breeze sounds like song.

windows. Pass by The Lobby Bar and choose a drink from their Moscow Mules Menu. From blueberry, orange, to my favorite: with Fireball, this will be the place to listen to music and get the night going. Once you have settled down, preferably in an Ocean Front Suite, then you can begin planning the day. Trust me, 34

Executive Chef Romeo Penacino to focus on customized menus, even offering gluten and vegan menus free of charge. At the Resort, you have a chance to get a Cooking Lesson. One of my favorite things to do since: a) I’m not a great cook, and b) I’m a huge foodie! Some of the yummiest dishes were salmon skin chicharron, Macadamia Grouper, Skirt Steak in Tamarind Sauce, and Orange Salmon marinated overnight in spices and chipotle.

there are many things to do at the resort without having to leave their extensive property. Start by taking a dip in the tranquil waters or working that tan at the H2Oasis Adult-Only Pool. Is a cool spot to gather with friends and have some lunch in a cabana.

Divine Dining: An interesting thing about Aruba is that it imports most of its food from the United States and other places in the Caribbe-

an because their soil is not that fertile. This is something that Arubans are trying to improve by creating greenhouses and hydrophobic farms to produce vegetables, spices, and other things. The local fish from the market is amazing, but it can’t keep up with demand. One of the things that differentiates the Aruba Marriott is that their policy is to only serve fresh fish, which must arrive within 48hrs of order. This allows Executive Sous Chef Miguel Garcia and

This creativity and desire for quality translates into all the restaurants of the hotel. You can even find Prime Rib, Mahi Mahi in mango chutney, roasted veggies, a sushi and pasta station, and all sort of desserts, at La Vista buffet.

Get Active On The Beach: Aruba is known for having extraordinary calm waters, making it ideal for aquatic sports such as windsurfing and StandUp Paddle Yoga. otic Frangipani Body Nourish Wrap, the Aloe and Milk Wrap, and the Coconut Poultice Massage. If you want to venture off property, then begin by visiting the Aruba Aloe Factory. With 12 vitamins and 75 minerals, and over 20 of essential amino acids, this natural ingredient is a fix-it-all miracle. It sooths burns, fights ageing and wrinkles, reduces acne inflammation, and even helps with chest congestion. Do not forget to stock up on their organic sunscreen and deliciously scented skin products. After taking care of your skin, take care of your soul, and board a DePalm Tours Sunset Sail for the opportunity to watch the moon and sun side by side at same time. It is quite a breaththe board without falling or ending up way beyond the shore. I must say that Paddle Boarding offers some amazing views for the island, so that was a huge perk. Overall is an amazing workout that helps you to find your strength and balance, and a great way to combine relaxing with toning your body. After all, we all want those hard as rock abs! Another way to enjoy the outdoors, while keeping fit, is to play tennis. I went to Beach Tennis Aruba, which is next to the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, with a group of girls and we had a blast learning about the sport and competing against each other. It is more complicated than it looks, but such a full-body workout that feels more like fun, and less like going to the gym.

Sunset Sail and Spa: After a day of intense activities, head to the Mandara Spa for some “me” time. The Balinese-style lounges and décor will transport you into a world of peaceful. Choose your aroma and prepare to leave all your troubles behind. They offer oils to relieve stress, help with skin dryness, and detox the body. Located over the water on the marina, it has great views and food. They started with only skewers, but clientele asked for more, and now they have evolved to offer a more extensive menu. They work directly with local fisherman and support locally grown vegetables like mushroom, lettuce, and tomatoes. This makes their food fresh and with that traditional island taste. A little Travel Tip is that the Aruba International Airport has a double security process for traveling to the United States. You will go through the immigration process on the island rather than on the States. Give yourself enough time for that and do not buy food outside of the US area, as it must be checked again. H.G. Wells’ Love Of Portugal & The Stunning Home Up North Which He Would Consider

“The Dream” BY BRENT LAMBERT

“Wet or fine, the air of Portugal has a natural happiness in it, and the people of the country should be as happy and prosperous as any people in the world.” These words of Portuguese praise date back nearly a century to 1924 and come from none other than H.G. Wells (1866-1946), the legendary science fiction writer who spent 1923 and 1924 writing several columns for various newspapers around the world, including The New York Times. The very best of these columns were compiled into the 1924 book, A Year of Prophesying, and included his now famous love letter to Portugal, which he cherished as one of his favorite places on Earth. #147 issue - BELLOmag.com

48

It was during his time in Portugal that H.G. Wells wrote his 1924 novel, The Dream, which is set in a utopian future around 4,000 A.D. Much of the novel consists of the main character, a biologist named Sarnac who, during a tranquil holiday with friends, recounts a vivid dream he had one afternoon of a British man from the early 20th century. Wells wrote The Dream as a social commentary and a way of representing our primitive modern age as an “Age of Confusion” and absurd rituals (i.e. smoking, religion, hunting, etc.) from which humanity would eventually break through, rise above, and create a better world thanks, in most part, to science and common sense. It’s been 70 years since H.G. Wells left our world for the great beyond, but if he could hop in one of his beloved Time Machines and revisit Portugal in 2017 he could take comfort in knowing that it remains as staggeringly beautiful as it was when he first fell in love with it so many years ago.

49

One of the crown jewels of the country is the northern region which is filled with an endless offering of vineyards to explore such as the ones in the Trásos-Montes area, as well as magnificent

credible modern villa in the entire north of the country. Designed by the firm of architect José Manuel Carvalho Araújo, the Casa do Gerês is tucked away in Portugal’s Caniçada Valley in the Vieira do Minho region. The home belongs to José Maria Marques Ferreira, who worked closely with Araújo to make sure the natural elements of the site were incorporated into the design.

50

A natural stream was integrated into the concrete stepping stone entrance up atop the bluff, which splashes its way down to a natural lake pool below. The steep hillside itself was turned from a liability into a natural asset, and perfectly hugs the home in such a way that it’s hard to imagine a time when the home was never there at all. And all windows and fenestration are carefully oriented to frame specific views of the breathtaking landscape that surrounds the residence. But what started as a story on a beautiful residential design, quickly took a surprising turn when I realized the Casa do Gerês is not just a private home — it’s also available for rent for 6 guests. Equipped with 3 bedrooms, 3 beds, 4 bathrooms, the natural pool, as well as a jacuzzi, the Casa do Gerês can be yours for $1,063 US/night (i.e. €1,000/ night).
