P.J. Flueger BETWEEN CHICAGO AND LA WRITTEN BY MICHELLE GANNEY PHOTOGRAPHER VANESSA VIOLA @VANESSAVIOLAPHOTOS STYLIST @STYLEDBYFRANZY GROOMER @SIENREE

Four dogs, four boys and a beautiful house in Venice. Patrick John Flueger’s lifestyle in Los Angeles is a lot more humble and laid back than you might think. Patrick is a true chameleon, and besides ticking all the boxes to being a great actor, he loves nothing more than to return to his abode in Venice.

For his at home feature the talented celebrity photographer Vanessa Viola shot him whilst I interviewed him on his rooftop overlooking the beautiful Venice beach. The budding actor opened up about his double life in Chicago and LA and apparently, there’s one major thing he misses about his home in Venice, “ahh I miss the dogs!” However, Patrick leads a very different life when he’s in Chiacgo. He currently plays the role of Police Officer Adam Ruzek in NBC’s hit show Chicago P.D., which is currently in its fourth season. 7

He’s had some rocky relationships on the show, with several engagements that have led him to having three ex-fiancés including Nicole, Wendy and Kim Burgess. His relationship status might not be so smooth on the show but it certainly is more stable in reality. When asked about his co-star Marina Squerciati, who plays Kim, the actor had nothing but praise for her, “she’s one of my best friends in the whole world. Lucky for me I work with a lot of people that I like so much. I work with two of my best friends and that’s

pretty cool. That’s what I do for a living!” It seems their off-screen chemistry has translated on-screen as the duo have racked up a pretty dedicated fan base. “Yeah the fans are upset we broke up and we are too because we love working together. People are so adamant about it, so I think they’re going to be hard pressed.” Patrick admitted that him and Marina are just as upset as the fans as they want Adam and Kim to make it work. “Yes, we definitely want to see that happening too, we can keep bugging everyone about it, let’s go for it!” It doesn’t look like Patrick can shed much light on the situation though as when asked about the status of their relationship these days he said: “Honestly, I have no f***ing clue.” Aside from Chicago P.D. Patrick spent his summer in New York shooting a film 9

called The Super alongside Batman legend Val Kilmer. Patrick spoke about his few months working with the talented actor. “I don’t totally know because I never really met Val Kilmer. He was in character a lot of the time and by the time he got there, he’d start and we’d kind of get things rocking.”

Patrick said he was very impressed with Kilmer’s work ethic, “It was actually kind of wonderful, I’d never worked March 2017 - BELLO

with somebody that was so gung-ho like that before. From the moment I met him he was in character and it was a very strange experience but at the same time I really liked it. It was really kind of impressive to be honest.” And of course it would be weird if he didn’t fan-boy over the fact that he was Batman. “He’s freaking Batman! He’s Jim Morrison, He’s me, myself and me. I’ve looked up to this guy for a really long time and I’ve heard stories about his kind of crazy approach to things but #148 issue - BELLOmag.com

we did have these moments of talking and he was very sweet.” It seems as though Kilmer came out of his shell the more time they spent together: “There were moments where he would kind of step outside what he was doing so we could have a conversation about teamwork and the direction he wanted to take things.” You can currently see this talented artist on Chicago P.D. which airs Wednesday’s on NBC. 10

39-YEAR-OLD JUSTIN HARTLEY HAS GRACED OUR TV SCREENS IN A NUMBER OF ICONIC ROLES OVER THE YEARS. FROM ADAM NEWMAN ON CBS’ THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS TO SCOTT TROSMAN IN MISTRESSES, PATRICK OSBOURNE IN ABC’S REVENGE AND OLIVER QUEEN / GREEN ARROW IN THE CW’S SMALLVILLE. WELL NOW, THE TALENTED BLONDE ACTOR HAS TURNED HIS HAND TO PROBABLY HIS MOST ICONIC ROLE YET.

T

he Illinois-born artist has captured everyone’s heart as Kevin in NBC’s new prime time show, This Is Us. The provocative ensemble drama, which also stars Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown, was nominated for three Golden Globe awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Critics Choice Television Award. Despite being one of the lead actors in this standout drama, even Hartley had no idea how triumphant this series would become. “You know, here’s what I knew […] I knew once I read it that it was really, really good and special. I knew when I saw the pilot that it was like nothing I’d seen before, it really jumped off the page and became something spectacular.” “But you never know what that means, you never know if it’s going to end up a sleeper, I don’t know what makes people watch things or not. But I just thought if we can get people to watch this they’re going to be blown away. You never know how big the shows going to be but I did know how good it was.” 27

Kevin Pearson, the handsome and successful television actor bored with his bachelor lifestyle, was a huge reason that Hartley took on this role. “When I first read the script I thought this is one of the best stories I’ve ever seen, the best episode of television I’ve ever read in my life. Then on top of that the character was just so great, he’s funny he’s self aware, he’s in on the jokes, he’s also loveable and he’s just sort of in a stumbling place in his life.” Hartley also admitted to relishing the fact that his character is in actor. “I don’t know I just fell in love with him, I thought this guy is so cool, it would be a dream to play this role. I’ve never played an actor before, as far as I can remember so that’s a new challenge that’s kind of fun. In my opinion it allows me to do certain things, be a little broader where I normally wouldn’t have, just because you can say ‘well he’s so dramatic he’s an actor.’ It allows for a little more fun to be honest with you.” Hartley is no stranger to TV dramas and thanks to his numerous roles on television the Knoxville-born actor has learnt

a thing or two about the industry. “TV shows are so collaborative, you have all these diverse opinions and it’s frustrating sometimes, you’re positive that it should be done this way and someone else is positive it should be done another way.” “What I’ve learned in my very old age is you only know what you think you know. So you could sit there and think this is definitely the way it’s supposed to be but you only know that because that’s what you think you know. You don’t really know!” And of course, Hartley couldn’t go through the interview without gushing over his incredible cast mates and team at NBC. “There are so many brilliant and smart people around me that are all vying for the same thing, to make this show as brilliant as it can possibly be so I just sort of try and listen to as many people as possible. There are definitely frustrating parts of every job, it’s still work, it’s fun and all that kind of stuff, but it’s like any other job sometimes. I absolutely love what I do though and I’m very passionate about it, I have no complaints!” March 2017 - BELLO

Loved by everybody. Naturally.

WRITTEN BY JON NORRIS

Winter boots, something of a necessity, aren’t they? Everybody has a pair. Although common, it’s hard to think about the pair you own, as effortlessly charming, soulfully angelic and delightfully elegant, I’d assume. Well, Cinzia Maag and her family have solved this incessant problem, creating a brand that has a personality so addictive, everyone is talking about it. INUIKII, is quite the story, and one you’ll never want to put down. Driven by a collective family unit of passion, love and a fine degree of taste, the brand is slowly, but very surely, building the foundation it deserves. Fresh, cultivated and practically robust, the boots showcase something new. It’s the talk of every ski resort in Europe, people want them, and it’s

#148 issue - BELLOmag.com

not just because they carry a huge degree of social recognition, no, well yes, but, they are also extremely warm, snug, and effective in all conditions, be it wind, rain, snow or ice – they excel. Each boot is handcrafted, designed in Switzerland, with handpicked Woolmark certified sheepskin for supreme user comfort. Of course, sheepskin is not averse to winter boots, but what Cinzia and her team have done, is spice up the offering, enthuse some elegance and open up a new avenue for everyone to indulge in. Inspiration came from harsh winters in Greenland, and the fondling hearts of the Swiss people, and combining the beauty of both stories, INUIKII was born.

The boots, together with the finest sheepskin, all showcase a natural rubber, patented sole, to provide the grip you’ll need during all-winter conditions. Every pair of boots is unique, and each have their own style. The designers experiment with the finest leathers, unusual furs, textiles and flittering sequins, some portraying a colour print, whilst some will have gleaming metals – the style is unique to the user, leaving the most important part, up to you. This individualistic approach to modern, contemporary footwear encapsulates bold and beautiful design, mixing materials, colours and most importantly, creative intelligence, to create, ‘the’ winter boot collection of 2017. Your Inuikii story, starts today.

Nobel Prize-Winning Biologist Explains How Meditation Opens Genetic Fountain Of Youth In Your DNA BY BRENT LAMBERT

The human body continues to reveal the most incredible surprises. For example, just last week scientists announced the discovery of a brand new organ called the mesentery that has been hiding in our intestines all this time (www.bit.ly/2iRPZUR). And in June 2015 researchers announced the discovery of a network of lymphatic vessels in the central nervous system which had never been detected before. It’s findings like these which make science so exciting, and for these researchers it must feel as euphoric as explorers from centuries ago who discovered new islands and continents for the very first time.

F

or scientists it’s not only the discovery of new “hardware” within the human anatomy that is changing our understanding — it’s also the the discovery of how our complex genetic “software” operates that has an enormous ripple effect on our knowledge of the human body as well. The genetic code that is given to us in our DNA from the moment we are conceived remains with us for our entire life span, but our environment and lifestyle can affect every line (i.e. gene) of this enormously complex code in what’s known as epigenetics. The air we breathe, the food we eat, and the toxins we are exposed to all have the power to activate dormant genes and “turn on” various forms of cancer, accelerated aging, hormone imbalances, obesity, various diseases, and so on and so forth. But research is showing how healthy lifestyles and food choices are powerful enough to turn these dangerous switches back to their healthy “off” positions once again. Gene expression is to the human body what computer codes are to programs. Genetics and epigenetics are the blueprints that make us who we are. These

#148 issue - BELLOmag.com

blueprints are both permanent (DNA) and under a constant state of revision (epigenetics). This genetic dance controls our physical appearance, our personality, our health — and even how long we live. Our DNA’s genes are contained in microscopic double-spiraled threads called chromosomes, and at the tips of these chromosomes are our telomeres — akin to the plastic tips on the ends of our shoelaces. The healthier our lifestyles are, the longer these protective telomeres are. And the more unhealthy we are, the shorter these protective telomeres get. Effectively, by looking at their length they can tell us how much life we have used and how much life remains inside of us. Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn is the renowned biologist who won the Nobel Prize for her discovery of how the length of these telomeres is regulated. Her groundbreaking research revealed a biological indicator called telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes our telomeres and protects our genetic heritage. It’s Blackburn’s discovery that led to the first genetic indications of a fountain of youth hiding inside our DNA. If you’ve ever wondered why some sixty-yearolds look and feel like forty-year-olds and why some forty-year-olds look and

52

feel like sixty-year-olds, the answer lies in our telomeres. In her fascinating new book entitled The Telomere Effect: A Revolutionary Approach to Living Younger, Healthier, Longer, Blackburn and co-author Dr. Elissa Epel, take us on a journey into the incredible world of our telomeres and telomerase, showing us the role these DNA tips play in the aging process and how specific lifestyle and psychological habits can protect telomeres, slowing disease and improving life. One of the most powerful of these habits being meditation, which Blackburn and Epel’s research has proven to have

53

an astonishing ability to safeguard our telomeres. Their studies have proven that chronic stress, depression, and ruminating negative thinking all act together to eat away at the length of telomeres and take years off a human life span. But through mindfulness and meditation this corrosive effect is shut down, effectively adding years to your life. In one of their studies, for example, Blackburn and Epel write: “We review data linking telomere length to cognitive stress and stress arousal and present new data linking cognitive appraisal to telomere length. Given the pattern of associations revealed so far, we pro-

pose that some forms of meditation may have salutary effects on telomere length by reducing cognitive stress and stress arousal and increasing positive states of mind and hormonal factors that may promote telomere maintenance. Aspects of this model are currently being tested in ongoing trials of mindfulness meditation.” One way to look at it is like this: the next time you complete a session of mindfulness or meditation, you are effectively younger than you were when you started. You can get your own copy of this incredible new book on Amazon at www.bit.ly/2mnVIpL

Men’s grooming is now a multi-billion pound worldwide industry;

a special guide by our very own supermodel WRITTEN AND CREATED BY MARK NORRIS

From face creams and hair gels to luxury barbering, and even intimate hair removal...we investigate what lies beneath all this male pampering.

The male grooming business is booming. Mrporter.com, the high-end menswear etailer, reported a 300 per cent growth in men’s beauty and grooming products in 2015, a category it only added to the site two years ago. But 2013 was a bellwether, the first year men spent more money on male-specific toiletries than on shaving products. The market is still growing. The top 10 boom markets for men’s toiletries since 2010 include Brazil, South Korea, the US, Germany, India and, yes, the UK. In China, another of that top 10, year-onyear growth has exceeded 20 per cent over the same period. That’s a wide territory, and pretty impressive figures. You understand why people are excited by, and focusing on, a world market whose value is estimated to top £14.8bn this year. “It’s been growing significantly,” says Elodie Bohuon, Selfridges beauty buyer, of the men’s grooming market. “Men are starting to get more and more knowledgeable about beauty and are paying attention to their looks: haircare is the biggest category, with shaving coming second.” However, she does allow that: “Women still play a very important role in that market. A very big percentage of #148 issue - BELLOmag.com

54

David Gandy and the rather dodgier Joey Essex as inspirations for preening. The next natural step, of course, is the salon, which has boomed. In 2015, 25 per cent of customer were men, according to a survey by professional beauty and hairdressing supplier Salon Services. The highest concentration is in the North West of England. Men-only salons are also gaining popularity – such as The Refinery, a London-based “grooming emporium” with two outlets situated in Mayfair and Knightsbridge. “Maintenance” is an interesting word, though. Men tend to see their grooming as work, rather than pleasure, both in the salon and out, whether it’s shaving their faces, or waxing their nether regions.

women are still buying men’s grooming lines as gifts, or on behalf of partners.” I wonder if there’s still some kind of social stigma to a man paying too much attention to his looks – is there still the notion that a “real” man wouldn’t wear moisturiser? Interestingly, it’s borne out by certain statistics – such as the fact that men are more likely than women to search for and buy toiletries online. According to Mintel, online sales of men’s toiletries increased 3.4 per cent to £30m in 2013, taking a five per cent 55

share of retail sales. Hence the fact that mrporter.com is making a quiet killing. “We saw the huge success with beauty on the Net-a-porter side, knew the men’s grooming category was growing overall, so recognised that it was a category with a lot of growth potential,” says David Olsen, the vice-president of beauty for both websites. Relatability is an important factor – when quizzed, 13 per cent of men claimed that they were inspired by celebrities in grooming, They cite David Beckham, March 2017 - BELLO
